We hold this truth to be self-evident: farting makes kids laugh. Walter, an apologetic-looking dog adopted from the pound, passes gas morning, noon, and night, no matter what he eats, whether it's a 25-pound bag of low-fart dog biscuits, cat food, or fried chicken. On the bright side, "If Uncle Irv let one slip, he just went and stood near Walter." When Father reaches the limit of his patience with Walter's flatulence, he decides the pooch is once again pound-bound, despite Betty and Billy's pleading. Poor Walter knows his days are numbered and "He resolved to hold in his farts forever." That very night, two burglars break into Walter's family's house, and (you can see where this is going) Walter gasses the burglars with a "hideous cloud" that forces them to drop their loot and run into the clutches of the police officers, "choking and gasping for air." The next morning Father and Mother discover Walter has saved the day--or at least their silverware and VCR. "And so the family learned to live with Walter, the hero dog. And that is the end of our tail." (Or is it? Fans will be pleased to discover the next book Walter the Farting Dog: Trouble at the Yard Sale.) Audrey Colman's highly stylized illustrations, imbued with a surreal, Monty Pythonesque collage look, are as absurdly comical as this silly story that is purely powered by natural gas. (Ages 5 to 8) --Karin Snelson

Book Description

Warning: This book may cause flatulence. Walter is a fine dog, except for one small problem: he has gas. He can't help it; it's just the way he is. Fortunately, the kids Billy and Betty love him regardless, but Father says he's got to go! Poor Walter, he's going to the dog pound tomorrow. And then, in the night, burglars strike. Walter has his chance to be a hero. Destined to become a children's classic, this story will have kids rolling on the floor with laughter. Adults are permitted to laugh too.

5 out of 5 stars This one's a real gas.......2007-10-16

Face it, people. The act of farting, even the name itself, makes kids giggle. So why not celebrate that with a literary treat? Walter is a dog with a problem that many young men face today: he can't stop farting. It's so stinkin' bad that his new owners are threatening to send him back to the pound. Luckily some burglars try to break in that very night and I'm sure you can figure out what Walter does to save himself and his family. You guessed it - gasses 'em. The illustrations are wonderfully wacky - just like the book. Can't wait to sniff out the next treasure in this series.

5 out of 5 stars Six year old loves Walter.......2007-10-08

I bought this as a gift for my best friend's six year old boy. He absolutely loves all of the Walter books.

4 out of 5 stars OMG they're not terrified?.......2007-09-26

Many people seem to be concerned that reading this book will encourage potty humor and make kids afraid of intruders. I have to say, this book is a favorite at our house and I have yet to see an increase in the fart jokes or have any of my kids fearful of burglars. Hmmmm..... I wonder if the same people have reviewed books such as, lets see, Hansel and Gretel and worried that their children may suddenly become frightened of candy and ovens.

All snarkiness aside, this is a hilarious children's book. I found the illustrations to be quite nice--different from the traditional watercolor or pencil drawings. I love when an illustrator uses a new style. This book will stay in our family's favorite reading pile.

5 out of 5 stars Great book. Kids 6, 4 & 2 enjoy!.......2007-09-26

We got this book, as well as Walter the Farting Dog Goes on a Cruise. My kids request this book every night, and over and over. We're pretty animated when reading, but besides that, this is a funny book. Who doesn't want to laugh at a fart? I think this also takes some of the 'kick' out of the WORD fart, since it's used in the book, and it takes some of the 'taboo' or naughtyness out of using it, so my kids use the word less these days, thank god....what's the fun, anymore, right? :) I definitely recommend this book. It's nice when I can have fun reading a book series, as well as my kids enjoying it, and in this forum they can finally SAY the word without me giving them the 'mom' look. Ok, well, I still give them the look....but this time I get to laugh.

5 out of 5 stars Shreiks of laughter!.......2007-09-17

I gave this book as a gift to my friend's son. To say that he was happy and excited doesn't even begin to describe it. After opening tons of Matchbox cars, action heroes, etc., he at last came to Walter The Farting Dog and abandoned all toys for this book! Everyone had to take turns reading to him, and he spent quite some time quietly reading to himself.

I give this book high praise, indeed, because it encouraged a love of reading!

I've read four books in the series now, and the concept of this one actually works. The more preposterous the situation, the more opportunity and capacity there is for humor. The digital artwork is wonderful, and the reactions of the passengers to Walter's ill wind must be seen.

Our daughter is not always thrilled for the young ones to recieve yet another Walter book, especially as our grandson, now 8, delights in the 'f(art)' word... 1 out of 5 stars Not a Good Children's Book!!!.......2007-09-25

I thought this book would be great for my 4 year old....I was wrong. Needless to say, I thought it would be funny until the dog is used in the bank robbery, THEN, his "owner" lights the balloon on fire and blows him up (he lives of course). The dog makes his way home with the money and the dad says "we're rich" What are we teaching our kids???? To light farts on fire and rob banks? It says nothing about the money being returned after "dad's" comment nor what happened to the actual robber. This book could have been MUCH better! I find it morally wrong.

5 out of 5 stars Love Walter.......2007-08-29

Walter books are ideal for all children. My grandson is 4 and he loves these books and reads them over and over again.

1 out of 5 stars A Morally Deficient Book .......2007-08-16

This book is so bad that for the first time in my life I had to physically destroy and throw the book away. I couldn't even bring myself to throw it in the trash whole and risk someone finding it and reading it to their children. What a morally deficient author to write a book where the father, sells his children beloved pet because he hates the dog and then lies about it to the kids telling them he is just wandering around and will be back soon. And at the end fakes love for the dog for the press and cameras!

I am also shocked that there are parents out there that actually heap kudos on this kind of junk (just because their 4 year old liked it and laughed at it!) and can't see that they are teaching their kids to be immoral!

Shame.

5 out of 5 stars Flatulance always a winner with boys!.......2007-07-19

I have a 5 yo and 15 yo- both boys- and the younger one fell in love with the Walter books. I even asked the 15 yo to read to him in the car and he grudgingly took the book, without even reading the title and by the 3rd page- even he couldn't help himself! Walter books are amusing, but they also teach a valuable lesson about unconditional love and accepting others even- even if they have "flatulance issues"!

4 out of 5 stars Funny Story for a Kid's Favorite Topic.......2007-03-13

This series of books is the perfect choice for little ones who have become easily entertained by everything "farting"..it seems to strike a cord with my 3-year old, who finds farting and the sound of the word endlessly funny!!

Walter makes his third appearance in yet another unapologetically silly picture book, this one dedicated to "everyone who's ever felt misjudged or misunderstood." The story begins when animal gas expert Professor Kompressor pays a visit to Walter's family, equipped with a contraption that looks like a cross between a vacuum cleaner and an old phonograph: "I understand your dog has a farting disorder," he says. At first it seems as if the professor's prescription of powders and potions is working, but one day, young Billy and Betty see Walter floating like a helium balloon over the trees, so full of pent-up gas he has become airborne. Unable to release his gas, the unfortunate dog floats over hill and dale for days and days. The formula for these books requires the much-maligned Walter to redeem his gaseous self by saving the day (he gasses out burglars in the first one and helps catch bank robbers in the second). Here, even more absurdly, he saves millions of butterflies from a freezing windstorm by letting rip a warm cloud of air that melts the frost off their wings. Colorful, crisp, almost three-dimensional art, generated with a digital painting and collage technique, gives the book a bizarre, sophisticated style that both complements and elevates the cheap laughs. (Ages 6 to 9) --Karin Snelson

Book Description

Professor Kompressor visits Walter's family, offering a remedy for the dog's digestive disorder: special food that must be mixed in his Kompressatron. Unfortunately, the Professor's cure doesn't work, so Father has to take matters in his own hands. Father's combination of ingredients has a strange effect on the pooch—Walter blows up like a balloon and floats out the window! Just when it looks as though Walter's paws may never touch earth again, he encounters a flock of butterflies in distress. Only he has the hot air that can save them from an icy death. Once he lets it rip, Walter's flying days are over. (Or are they?) Plenty of laughs and cheers will arise from this story that takes Walter to new heights.

This book, Walter the farting dog, contains a great lesson while engaging children because of his socially unacceptable behavior. Don't judge a book by its cover....updated.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the three Walter books..........2006-02-12

I love this book! The illustrations take a little getting used to (definitely off-beat, like the other two), and the storyline is slightly subversive, but the whole book is just very funny (for me, as an adult), and my kids love it, too. It's the one book that I will cheerfully read them twice in the same night. Farts aside, it's actually pretty wholesome and carries (I think) a positive message about being authentic and true to yourself. Plus, it has larger than usual words for a book targeted at this age group, which I think is useful. All in all, well worth the twelve or fourteen bucks you pay for it. I've bought copies for some other parents as gifts...(Nobody's complained...)

3 out of 5 stars Great art, but story line is on the weak side..........2007-08-07

You have to start with a certain level of acceptance when you pick up a kids' book titled Walter The Farting Dog: Banned From the Beach. I suspect those without that level of acceptance won't pick it up in the first place.

Walter has a gas problem. The same gas that gets him in trouble at the beach ends up... well, that's the story! However, "the point" here is weak. No matter what planet you're from, the theme of the story is... what? You are weird if you are irritated by dogs behaving badly on the beach or elsewhere? Society should accept everything? How about, dog owners are okay even if they are not responsible. Or, don't worry, be happy? I realize that stories for kids are allowed to be... just fun. I'd put this one in that category. But I've heard that there ARE themes here: don't rush to judgment, be accepting, defend the defenseless, and so on. These themes weren't here for me.

But the artwork! Superb work, indeed. The book certainly didn't need a "scratch'n sniff" strip to make you aware of Walter's little problem.

5 out of 5 stars Funny - Kids love it.......2007-07-29

If you have a problem coaxing your kids to read - Walter comes to the rescue. While being funny (all kids think the subject matter is funny) it is also a book that teaches kids a lesson about acceptance of those with minor flaws.

This is a questionable document. One wonders why the effort was made.

The illustrations are creepy.

The subject matter is those weaknesses the flesh is err to.

4 out of 5 stars Walter Canis Inflatus.......2007-05-18

What is a great and entertaining book in English is now a firm favourite with my son in Latin. He likes being able to follow the Latin using the english version written directly below. However the Latin requires someone who has reasonable proficiency in the language if you are wishing to directly translate and explain the Latin to a child and there is no helpful glossary. All in all, a great book - very quirky pictures but a firm favourite with my son.

5 out of 5 stars Many children's classics are translated into Latin.......2004-07-25

This is but one of the many children's classics that are translated into Latin. Naturally there are going to be people that will pick apart the book and say that is not correct form or syntax. Then again Walter has not been around that long. And pulling it apart is really part of the fun. Just remember that the translator Rob Dobbin has translated several books into various languages. He is the Author of "Epictetus: Discourses Book 1" and soon will translate the complete works of Epictetus.

Let's face it, it is easer and more fun to read something you already know. Also it is fun to see how certain phrases and newer concepts are handled. Learning Latin this way also helps kids pass English tests in school by learning root concepts.

This book has an added plus. The English and Latin are both on the same page. So when Walter does what he does best you can imagine it in both languages.
