If you're ready for an Elements 3 book that breaks all the rules, this is it, because it does something for digital photographers that's never been done before--it cuts through the bull and shows you exactly "how to do it." It tells you, flat-out, which settings to use, when to use them, and why.
This book is not a bunch of theory; it doesn't challenge you to come up with your own settings or figure things out on your own. It gives you the same settings used by some of the top digital pros, settings you can use today to get professional results you've always dreamed of.
Plus, since this book is designed for photographers, it doesn't waste your time talking about how to frame a shot, setting your exposure, etc. and there's no talk which camera or printer to buy. It's all Elements, step-by-step, cover-to-cover in the only book of its kind, and you're gonna love it!
Besides learning the inside tips and the tricks of the trade for correcting, editing, sharpening, retouching, and presenting your photos like a pro. You'll learn how to unlock the power of all the new Elements 3 features, including how to manage your photos using the new Organizer, how to use the new "pro tools" like the Healing Brush and the Shadow/Highlight controls, and how to master the new "Creation" section to take your photos to an entirely new level. Plus, you'll see it all step-by-step, in plain English, and you'll be absolutely amazed at how easy and effective these techniques are, once you know the secrets.
- The secrets of how the pros retouch portraits
- How to incorporate the amazing new features of Elements 3 into your work today!
- How to color correct any photo without breaking a sweat (you'll be amazed at how they do it!)
- How to repair and restore damaged photos
- The sharpening techniques the pros really use (there's an entire chapter just on this!)
- Dealing with common digital camera image problems, including removing noise and avoiding halos
- When to use Quick Fix, and when to do to it yourself (using our step-by-step methods).
- The most-requested photographic special effects
- and much more!
But besides all that, this book has a "secret weapon" that makes it the most important, most useful Elements book yet. The reason is this--although Elements 3 offers some digital photography features Photoshop CS doesn't offer, there are plenty of features that Photoshop CS has, that Elements 3 still doesn't have (things like Layer Masking, Channel Mixer, etc.). But in this book, you'll learn some slick workarounds, cheats, and some fairly ingenious ways to replicate many of those Photoshop features from right within Elements.
There's never been a book like it, and if you're a digital photographer using Photoshop Elements 3, this is the book you've been waiting for.

Love this book--Mac user.......2007-09-29
Even though I use a Mac and this book was written for Windows users, most of it can be applied to the Mac platform also. Mac users can skip the Organizer section; we have iPhoto and don't need the Elements Organizer anyway. We Mac users also must make a few adjustments; for example when told to use the Control key, we use the Apple Command key.
I'd already taught myself how to use several of the features in Elements 3, but since buying this book, I've become amazed at the many marvels of this program that I hadn't yet discovered. Kelby gives specific easy to follow instructions.
Still, it would be great if more was written for the Mac. There are many of us loyal Mac users out there, who aren't about to give up our wonderful Macs.

Photoshop Elements 3 Book For Digital Photographers (Voices).......2007-06-13
This has been very helpful in learning how to use the PSE3 program... I'm still working with it but to this point I would recommend to anyone...
Fantastic Instructional Book.......2007-04-05
I would recommend this book to the person who doesn't like to read a lot of verbiage. This book states the facts one one side of the page while illustrating the screen shot on the other side of the same page. I found it most helpful and easy reading. It also helps you up front and first with organizing folders and saving files to folders - doesn't jump right in and starts on edit instruction. As I believe organization is the most difficult part of Photoshop to learn, I liked being walked thru the steps.
Sadly, a Disappointment.......2006-06-15
If you hate theory, you will love this book. The author makes certain that you do not glean any insights into how Elements 3 works. If you want to crack this book open each time you use Elements, and follow the button-clicking instructions, you will always be on Square One, if that is what you like. For instance, Layers are never described or explained. There is no chapter on Layers. No mention of Layers, the Layers Palette, or Backgrounds, until: "Make a copy of the photo by dragging-and-dropping your Background Layer on the Create a New Layer icon at the top of the Layers palette. This will create a layer titled "Background Copy." No definition of any of these terms has appeared, and presto, you are supposed to know what he is talking about.
Also, if you love chattiness, talk on peripheral subjects, and silly, irrelevant humor, this is definitly your book. Remember: no theory in this book! No why, no because, no overview, just do this and do that. Definitely not my cup of tea.
Scott Kelby is My Favorite Photoshop Author.......2006-06-05
First a confession! Scott Kelby is my favorite Photoshop author/DVD presenter. (Eat your heart out Deke McClelland, my second choice!)
Now that that's out of the way, this is not just another Elements replacement manual, making up for Adobe's lack of one. What is different about this book is that Kelby writes in a thoroughly enjoyable and easy to understand style as he opens each chapter with a small farce and then in real time proceeds to take you step by step through one or another of those work flows needed to correct or enhance an image into something worth keeping. As Kelby says in the "Read This First" chapter (Introduction, by another name), "... I tried not to put things in this book that are already in every other Photoshop book out there."
The book covers work flow from Organizer to Editor, fixes for all the usual image defects or enhancements and output procedures for print, slideshow, e-mail and website. There is no CD with the book, but in a practice that appears to be gaining acceptance in this type of book, the images used in the book are available at the author's website.
I enjoyed using this book to improve my own limited Elements (and Photoshop) skills. There are just enough basics within his procedures in the book for Newbies to learn their basic skills and enough advanced editing for experienced editors to enjoy. I recommend this book. (Reviewed by MiltK)

Good book.......2007-05-13
I enjoyed reading the book and use it extensively.
I thought the book could have had less "corn" dialogue.
The book did not address how to remove flash reflections off of eye glasses.
Great insight for PSPE 4, but a little light.......2007-02-09
Excellent layout and easy to read.
Kelby has a great instructional, yet whimsical style.
Very good for the layman; would be digital photo manipulator.
The only demerit I would note is the lack of more indepth instructions for uses of "layers".
Layers are my weakest area for this software, but the rest of the info was great and very useful with great illustrations.
Dont think - Just buy it!!.......2007-01-29
I have the same review title for all Scott's books. I did a panorama in 5 minutes...what more can I say? Dont think - Scott's books are awesome.
Elements 4 for Digital Photographers.......2007-01-15
Excellent workbook to learn how to use a great photo editing program. The photographs used in the book can be downloaded from Scott Kelby's web site and you can perform photo editing just like in the book. Our club has made a series of workshops out of this book to improve the skills of members and the book is recommended for everyone.
Keep this by your computer........2007-01-11
This book is so helpful that I also keep a handwritten tip sheet for portability in addition to having the book by my computer. I use post-it notes with written tabs to access often-used techniques. Great exercises and tips!

Not a back book, but...........2007-10-13
To be fair, I have not really spent much time with this book. I bought it mostly because I thought it was really going to take me to the next level. I found that my skill levels were already past this book. It is not a back book and it can be good for someone who is fairly new to Elements. But, I don't know if I would really call it Advance. Overall it is not a bad book.
No Download available.......2007-09-30
I purchased the book because it states that you could get many of the test documents as a download. The truth is they are not available and if you go to the link provided, the page is empty.
Other than that I found the book had good information but some of the procedures could not be followed because of the lack of access to the files.
Advanced Photoshop Elements 5.0 for Digital Photographers.......2007-07-07
This is the companion book to Philip Andrews' "Photoshop Elements 5 - A Visual Introduction to Digital Photography", also from Focal Press. This title is aimed at those who have mastered the basics covered in the first book and wish to get to grips with some of the more advanced digital imaging techniques that are possible with the software. Containing 11 chapters, the book covers various topics including: camera and scanner techniques, working with RAW files, advanced image changes, darkroom techniques on the computer, making better panoramas, extending your web abilities and producing great prints, to name a few. The companion website is again a great addition to the book, where there are further resources, including videos and all the photos used in the book for you to download and practice on. As a digital photographer myself, I have found all of Philip Andrews' books extremely clear and helpful and this one is no exception. Again, he has written one of the best books available on the subject, in his usual clear and engaging style. The informative step-by-step instructions, full colour screen shots, and the attractive presentation throughout, only serve to reinforce the reasons to buy it.
What every serious photographer needs.......2007-06-27
I absolutely LOVE this book! If there is ANY question that you may have when editing in Elements 5.0, this book has the answer!! Someone recommended this book to me, and I have not looked back since. I HIGHLY recommend this book to ANYONE who has Elements 5.0. Get it....., you will NOT be sorry!
Excellent Guide for the non-newbie.......2007-06-17
As an owner of a number of decent Photoshop and Photoshop Elements books, this one is pretty close to the top of the list. It's very well organized, from the table of contents through the presentation of the specific topic of interest. Well illustrated also.
What I also found valuable is that each topic/task has which version of Photoshop Elements it works with. So, even if you're not a Photoshop 5 user, or will be upgrading soon, this would be a good investment.
Two other highlights: 1) His treatment of RAW processing...very sane and easy to follow, and 2) presentation of the workflow for digital photography.
Wait...one more! The guide on printing is quite good too. If you're like me, you may be very happy with the picture, less than happy with the inkjet print. Good ideas on how to help here.
Very impressed with this book. Highly recommend!

Book Description
This absorbing book, by professional photographer and author Ken Milburn, offers a ton of expert advice to those who are ready to move to the next level with digital photography. Rather than a general discussion of photography principles, Digital Photography: Expert Techniques focuses on workflow: time-tested, step-by-step procedures based on hard-nosed experience by and for genuine practitioners of the art. The book's conversational tone presents detailed information about what to look for in today's affordable high-end digicams, how to use simple techniques and equipment to shoot breathtaking shots, instructions on shooting great panoramas, dos-and-don'ts for creating better Photoshop masks, and professional digital darkroom techniques for everything from knockouts to restoration to transforming your photos into watercolors. It even shows you how to get your most prized photographs printed and ready for exhibition. Contents include:
- Understanding your digital camera from the inside out.
- Creating effects with the camera: making panoramas, high-resolution matrixes, infrared photos, and more.
- General composition and managing your workflow.
- Using the digital darkroom and Photoshop CS to make your images professional caliber.
- Understanding the power of Photoshop CS selections and masks.
- Using special effects to save what's good, and get rid of the bad and the ugly.
- Creating fictitious photos: bend and wrap images to fit an object, insert a more interesting skyscrape, and more.
- Professional color and tonal management
- Creating portfolios and presenting your images on the Web.
Digital Photography: Expert Techniques is in four-color front to back, allowing you to see each step in the Digital Photographer's workflow, including the steps in-between. Serious photographers, including professionals, who want to take advantage of the unique creative powers available through digital photography and digital image processing will find this problem-solving book invaluable.
Customer Reviews:
Who's an Expert?.......2007-02-16
This is a well written book that it's hard to put into a cubby. That's because one man's expert technique is another man's beginner's technique.
Milburn's style is to follow a workflow approach, starting even before capture and moving through the use of Bridge, Adobe Camera Raw and the main Photoshop program. Milburn emphasizes the importance of non-destructive adjustments and in the main program proceeds first with both overall and targeted adjustments which are made by adding layers which do not change the underlying photo. He recommends that only when these are completed should adjustments that effect the underlying image be made, and then only on image layers that have been created especially for this purpose. (Strangely, in creating this special layer, he recommends converting the background layer to Layer 0, selecting all the layers and then using Cmd/Ctrl-Opt/Alt-E. Most experts do not recommend changing the background layer, but rather just selecting the top layer in the layer stack and using Cmd/Ctrl-Opt/Alt-Shift-E.)
By the way if this last discussion of creating a new layer was incomprehensible to you, you are probably not one of the experts that Milburn is aiming at.
And of course there's the rub. In some chapters the instruction is quite suitable for beginning Photoshop users and in other chapters one would have to quite familiar with Photoshop to get something out of the discussion. Moreover sometimes this happens in the same chapter. For example, in the chapter on Camera Raw he gives elementary instructions on using the sliders on the adjust tab which would be quite suitable for a beginner, but not necessary for anyone with a familiarity with Camera Raw. Later in the same chapter, he discusses creating high-key and low-key images which I would consider closer to expert needs. Moreover, he sometimes leaves out what I felt was essential information. For example in the Camera Raw chapter he discusses the fact that there is a sharpening facility in Camera Raw, but doesn't mention that fact that it can be set to apply only to the preview without actually being applied to the image later opened in the main Photoshop program.
Some chapters are clearly aimed at more advanced Photoshop users and quite good. For example, the chapter on repairing the details was full of information that an expert user may never have encountered before or never appreciated the importance of.
Occasionally, I found that the author made reference to a particular chapter or a website that was inaccurate, but not fatal since the material was covered somewhere in the book.
Where does all of this leave one? Certainly, to get the most from this book, you will need to be experienced with Photoshop and Camera Raw. Many experts would then prefer to look for advanced information in more targeted books. But others who don't mind having their memory refreshed about things they already know will probably pick up several useful techniques from this book. I certainly did.
A long read - because it is that good.......2007-01-12
I was anxiously awaiting this title to arrive in the mail, particularly because of its emphasis on "expert" techniques. Though I didn't find every page riveting, the book on the whole fulfilled my expectations.
If you have jumped into the world of serious amateur or semi-pro photography, you no doubt own an SLR camera. It is a must. After continuing to shoot JPG for awhile, you venture into the world of RAW files. This is a whole new world with incredible possibilities. What you quickly find is your hard drive quickly fills up with RAW files and you have a hard time knowing how work with those files in any sort of time-conscious workflow. You let them pile up into a perpetual of backlog.
Ken Milburn knows his stuff, and has developed a highly effective workflow for processing, organizing, presenting and publishing his photos. His experience shows through in each chapter as he opens up his entire process for everyone who reads this title to learn from. Though I found some of my own workflow techniques already matched his suggestions, I found numerous suggestions I hadn't previously known or considered that have helped improve my effectiveness. Efficient and effective workflow is the overriding theme of this title.
Though much of the books training focuses on post production, namely in Adobe Bridge and Photoshop, a couple of chapters at the beginning get you optimizing and improving your in camera approach as well. Past the workflow theme, there is plenty of time spent on giving your photos the "wow factor" you have always wanted. What I enjoyed most was the improved techniques taught in the "non-destructive" phase of digitally developing your photos.
I recommend this book to anyone who is shooting a high volume of photos, particularly those that may be working their way into portrait photography for hire. Adding the habits and knowledge gained from this title will make you a much better professional as well as the ability to output top notch photos.
MyMac.com Book Review.......2006-12-19
With a plethora of digital cameras appearing in the marketplace, purchases of these cameras has exceeded even the most ambitious sales predictions. Everyone and his grandmother now has a digital camera. A lot of these models are of the point and shoot variety. They're small, lightweight, actually take great pictures, and have many features for the cost. There are lots of publications out there: magazines, how-to books, manuals, videos, and websites which help newbie photographers along the path to good quality photographs. If you're looking for something like that, may I pass along a suggestion from the Ken Milburn, the author of this title under review? Before reading this book try Deke McClelland's Adobe Photoshop CS2: One on One (O'Reilly). You will then be "up to speed" and more able to handle the various terms and maneuvers in Digital Photography: Expert Techniques.
Along with all the less expensive point and shoot cameras, digital SLRs (single lens reflex) have also grown up. Most of these cameras will be purchased by serious amateurs, or "enthusiasts," and professionals. DSLRs have interchangeable lenses, more megapixels, and larger, more noise-free sensors. In other words they're more suited to professional and "prosumer" photography.
DSLRs also are capable of producing high quality RAW files which are, in large part, what this book is all about. It's also about workflow rather than procedures. If you're interested in what it takes to make true professional quality images in the most efficient and cost-effective way this book is for you.
The first thing I loved about Digital Photography: Expert Techniques is its organization, and the chapter outlines at the beginning. Here the author tells us what's in store for each chapter from start to finish. I also appreciate the way Ken Milburn writes. It's almost conversational, like having a good buddy who happens to know almost everything there is to know about what goes into a professional digital photograph, and being a professional photographer.
He starts us off with an overview around which the rest of the book is structured. There is a quick guide in the form of suggestions (some are common sense, others are anecdotal) like getting your camera ready, computer equipment and its configuration, image downloading, backing up originals, presentation for client approval, winnowing, preliminary editing, and the final output. He includes logical common sense tips about equipment, settings, and more. He even provides a comprehensive list of what's available -- suggesting hard drives, backups, monitors, and DVD writers. Efficiency is always the byword in workflow, and Ken Milburn leads the way.
Milburn teaches us how to connect to DNG (digital negative), a nonproprietary RAW format which anyone can use. He suggests that it may become a universal format which means that even if the RAW file format in your software becomes obsolete you will still retain your RAW files through DNG. Safety. Efficiency. Smart.
Since the author has been a professional photographer for decades he has learned through experience and study about being prepared in the field for both seen and unforeseen circumstances. He passes along sage advise and counseling in his chapter BE PREPARED.
One of the great features which has separated Adobe Photoshop CS2 from the rest of the pack is Adobe Bridge. It is a browser, but so much more. Ken Milburn gives the reader an excellent primer on how this feature works and its many advantages. He shows how simple it is, and at the same time it is scriptable, customizable, has variable thumbnail sizing, and has multiple browser windows which can be opened at the same time.
Want to create and use panel layouts to sort as you wish? How about creating a meta data template including all your camera info like settings, history, status, and even IPTC (International Press Telecommunications Council) info? He shows you how to do all this, and more.
Once we get into Camera Raw, Ken Milburn shows us how to streamline the process. Once it's set up you're ready to rip. For you Photoshop Elements 4 users he shows the differences between Camera Raw in Elements 4 and CS2. He also tells us the why and how of it all so we understand why all this is a good thing. Take for instance the aforementioned DNG files. The author implores the reader to strongly consider filing using DNG and lots of backup. It's possible that either through technical improvements, marketing considerations, mergers, or even dissolution of a manufacturer that a proprietary RAW format could become obsolete. It is certainly something to consider.
There are some clients out there who need their photos quickly. Wedding and sports photographers can attest to this. The author shows us that Camera RAW defaults to "smart" Auto adjustments for Exposure, Shadows, Brightness, and Contrast. So there's a good chance of getting a publishable image right out of the camera. Sweet! Milburn demonstrates how to open and adjust multiple RAW files quickly when the files have the same exposure, brightness, range, contrast, and color balance. He introduces us to HDR (High Dynamic Range), and High Key images.
Layers have been around for quite some time, and here we are shown a system for non destructive editing. There's a great chart listing in three columns Layer Name, Purpose, and Advice. It's like a quick check on WWKD (What Would Ken Do) for using Adjustment Layers. Even for those of us who might be new to Layers he gives us a quick rundown of Layers and Features in Adobe Photoshop CS2.
Ken Milburn's friend, Doug Sahlin, came up with an interesting idea which the author includes in Digital Photography: Expert Techniques. It's called the Magic Workflow Layers Action. It allows us to include the layers in the workflow for almost every image automatically, ensuring the photographer will follow a properly layered workflow for most basic steps. You can either get this in the book or download it from the sites provided. This alone could shorten the learning curve in learning layers workflow.
All of the general repair tools are reviewed but the author goes way beyond the characteristics of the tools and into the world of commercial photography and how these tools can work for the professional photographer. This includes Glamor Tips, Architectural Tips, Still Life, lighting from behind, and more.
Are you into montages or collages? Ken Milburn can help, and does he ever. We've all tried to string together various shots in an effort to create a panorama of a scene too vast for one shot, but with varying degrees of success. The author talks about exposure, tripods, and framing. There are several example photos showing what a professional panorama looks like. I've made all the mistakes he mentions, and then some. Thanks, Ken, for straightening me out.
In his chapter "Creating the Wow Factor" we get into the details of the various tools and how, using layers, the photographer can enhance just about any aspect of lighting, colors (or black & white), and even using what he terms a "fictitious imaging tool," liquefaction, which can remove unwanted pounds from a model, or add bulk to anyone or anything. He has many suggestions and techniques using Lighting Effects which are especially dramatic when used inside of layers. We learn how to make homemade backgrounds as well as Knockouts. If you like the look of hand coloring or tinting Ken shows us how to do it effectively and easily.
Milburn's experience as a pro for many years becomes a windfall for us readers as, in the last chapter, "Presenting Your Work to the World," he talks about some of the many ways to become recognized, and even paid, as a photographer. He starts by showing us how to get the prints we need by calibrating the printers and even LCD monitors. There are tips to show your images on the web, making portfolios, binders, contact sheets, and much more. And let's not forget the all-important Copyright protection using watermarks.
While our author is certainly a huge fan and user of Adobe Photoshop CS2, he is by no means married exclusively to that software. He lists alternatives and even talks about the differences and some advantages of software like Capture One Pro, Raw Shooter, Aperture (which can be used with Photoshop CS2), iView Media Pro, and Adobe Lightroom. All of these programs have their high points and are not to be dismissed as second only to Adobe Photoshop CS2.
If you've ever wondered what it takes to be a pro in the photo biz, Digital Photography: Expert Techniques will give you a good idea of the dedication, knowledge, and work it takes to do it right. One has only to look at Ken Milburns pictures to see why this book makes so much sense. His photos are pristine. He seems to be able to connect with the very vibrations of the colors, shadows, and details which are all part of an image, but are often times skirted over by photographers, if only for the lack of knowledge it takes to recognize these things and bring them "up" in the image. His techniques, to be sure, are always pointed toward one thing, and one thing only. Making the best image possible with the least amount of effort and expense. And here it all is, in this wonderful and smartly instructive book.

SMILE: YOU'RE ON DIGITAL!!.......2006-12-06
Are you a photographer who is serious about producing the highest quality photographs in the most efficient and cost-effective way possible? If you are, then this book is for you. Author Ken Milburn, has done an outstanding job of writing a 2nd edition of a book that focuses on digital SLR cameras that have higher megapixels of noninterpolated resolution, interchangeable lenses, and larger, more noise-free sensors.
Milburn, begins by putting the organization of the entire book in perspective. Then, the author covers how to set your camera to be prepared for shots. Next, he discusses the Bridge in relation to Photoshop and to the myriad ways that it helps to keep your workflow organized. He also gets into more depth about streamlining your processing while in Camera Raw. The author then continues by describing in detail, how layers can be used to isolate destructive operations, so that they can be carried out without affecting anything else you've done to the image. Then, he shows you how to use adjustment layers, which are completely nondestructive, to make overall image adjustments. Next, the author discusses making and using selections, masks, and other means of making adjustments that pertain only to portions of the image. He also covers all types of image repair, including retouching. The author continues by discussing the making of one image from multiple images using techniques of both collage and montage. Then, he presents the next stage of progressively more destructive editing: special effects. Next, the author covers specialized image processing. Finally, the author shows you how to prepare your image for output and then how to use that output to show off your talents in an efficient and cost-effective way.
This most excellent book is more about workflow than it is about procedures in a specific program. Perhaps more importantly, this book contains most of the information you'll ever need as a professional digital photographer.
Make Your Digital Photos Stand Out From The Rest.......2006-12-06
Reading many of the other review already posted, I couldn't help but chuckle at some of the 'complaints' regarding this book:
- there is too much emphasis on DIGITAL and not PHOTOGRAPHY
- there is too much emphasis on using Photoshop
- pictures chosen aren't of the best quality
Folks, the title of this book headlines the words DIGITAL and TECHNIQUES. This isn't a book that is meant to teach you how to become a better photographer or headlines a collection of great photographs, rather it is a book that is meant to teach you how to take digital images and turn them into BETTER pieces of work for whatever purpose you see fit.
Printed on very heavy stock paper, this is a guide that is full of color and has plenty of screenshots to help any user find their way through digital enhancement with Photoshop (or any other image editing software that utilizes the same words for the techniques that are presented here).
Packed with nearly 400 pages of material, this book presents topics in a clean, concise manner, spread over the following 12 chapters:
01. Basics
02. Advanced tricks
03. Using Bridge
04. Streamlining Camera Raw
05. Nondestructive Layering
06. Nondestructive Overall Adjustments
07. Making Targeted Adjustments
08. Repairs
09. Collage and Montage
10. Adding 'Wow' to your images
11. Special Purpose Processing
12. Saving for the web
I find Ken Milburn's book to be an excellent resource for all digital photography afficiandos that want to get the most out of their images and learn how Photoshop can fix or repair nearly any problem that can be found and viewed on a computer.
If you are a graphic designer or work with digital images on a daily basis, you owe it to yourself to pick up this great book that will most certainly add to your skillset... no question!!

Any book by Tim Grey is terrific, and this is no exception. I use it for teaching.
Disappointing.......2007-04-11
This textbook was not what I was expecting. Albeit, the author attempts to provide concrete examples of projects, I found the supporting text difficult to follow. Stock photos are nice, but that's about it. If you are a novice, or new to PSE 5 this book isn't for you.

Exceptional Step-By-Step Guide for Photoshop Elements.......2007-01-18
The author has done an excellent job of leading you through different processes to fully use Photoshop Elements. You'll be able to understand "layers" and how to apply them without disturbing the original picture. By following the instructions, you will be surprised how adept you can be in giving photos new life (and some pretty nifty effects). After reading this book, I became a real pro with Photoshop Elements 4.0 (the version I use currently). If you buy one book to learn Elements, this is it!
Simply the Best book on the subject.......2006-05-09
There are a lot of books out there that claim to be for photographers or digital photographers but Phiiip Andrews' approach to his latest book focus on the Photoshop Elements as an extension of your digital camera experence. Missing are endless pages of running reharsh of material that is well covered in the user manual. In its place you will discover well laid out explainations of the essential features in Elements that can transform interesting photos into prize winners. He could have devoted more space to Raw conversion but as a Photoshop Elements author I am aware of the cold hard facts that exteremely few Elements users actually use Raw format so any additional coverage of the topic would have been a waste of ink and paper. If you are a digital photographer that wants to move beyond the point-and-shoot world of vacation photos this is the perfect guidebook. I would be remiss if I failed to point out one major flaw in the book. While the photos in the book are beautiful, the author insists that the photos are colour. If you can overlook the fact that the author has a misguided devotion to the UK spelling of color you won't find a better book on this topic.
The MASTER author strikes again.......2006-04-24
I find myself wondering why manuals and 'textbooks' can't be written in this same easy-to-read style.
Philip Andrews has now become my 'author of choice' in regards to all things photographic or digital, or a combination of the two.
This latest book is done in his easy style - whether you're 'novice' or 'advanced' (or somewhere in between), he 'talks' to us all.
The added advantage of 'Advanced Photoshop Elements 4' is that it also gives you tips for earlier versions of Elements - and a 'novice' need not be afraid to read through it. So, whether you're just starting with Elements 4 - or still using version 2 - you're bound to pick up some time-saving (and / or creative) tips.
The big plus with Philip Andrews' style is that he caters to photographers (who create 'visually' - that is, they like to look at photographs, and photographic styles, and create graphic images). So his books are filled with photographs - and COLOUR photos at that (which is how most of us like to view images). But for the Black & White purists, there are B & W techniques, as well.
Whether you're involved with web pages - or puzzling through the 'mysteries' of printing - or pining for a great panorama (it explains about 'Nodal Points' - but simplifies the explanation if you DON'T want to know about technical details) - or correcting, or making, distortions - being more creative - or just finding out HOW all those tools in Elements work - this is THE 'textbook' or 'Bible' for Elements-users to have in their library.
Well rounded coverage.......2006-02-05
This book is more than just a Photoshop Elements software manual, it includes chapters on scanner and camera techniques and printing tips. Other chapters cover both basic and advanced tasks. Throughout there are sidebars with step-by-step workflows. The book is filled with color illustrations and screen shots. All versions of Elements are covered here but I'm not sure why this might be needed in an advanced book.
The arrangement of articles makes some things harder to find - for example the section about tinkering with the depth of field is in the chapter on Panoramas. Each section includes an indication of related techniques and difficulty level.
This book has to be compared to Scott Kelby's Elements 4 book. In general the Kelby book is more advanced - it includes a chapter on RAW processing for example where this Andrews book only has 2 pages. The Kelby book is better organized but it is limited to just advanced Elements procedures. If you are an intermediate user this Andrews book is probably the one you want.

Book Description
Scott Kelby offers full-color, graphically rich, linear, tutorial- and project-based examples of every key step in the digital photography process. From experimenting with camera settings, through capturing and manipulating the image, through editing, output and organization, this book is designed for the digital photographer who knows aesthetics but who wants a concise guide to "grip it and rip it" usage of digital technology. Photoshop Elements is a very powerful and affordable image editing software. It carries many of the same features Photoshop does without the complicated graphs and tools. It also carries it all at a much less expensive price tag - only $99, compared Photoshop's $600. Anyone making the transition from film to digital photography will learn the stuff that is critical for Photoshop Elements -- no theory, no challenging the readers to come up with their own settings. This book shows the readers exactly "how to do it."
Scott Kelby is President of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP), and is Editor-in-chief of both Photoshop User and Mac Design magazines. Throughout the year, Scott serves as Training Director for the Adobe Photoshop Seminar Tour and is technical chair of the largest Photoshop gathering, Photoshop World. Scott is one of the leading Photoshop trainers in the country today and trains thousands of Photoshop users across the country each year, and is featured in a series of Photoshop training videos. He has written 6 best-selling books on Photoshop and on digital photography.
Customer Reviews:
Scott Kelby is the BEST.. depending on your approach.........2006-12-05
I use the full Photoshop Program (not Elements, although I do have a copy of the old version 2.0 onboard).. Scott Kelby's approach to his books is generally the same in all cases (Elements AND the full Photoshop program).. if you want, for example, to learn how to do a collage/montage, he has a section in his book to deal with the subject, and step-by-step instructions on how to achieve this effect.
There are plenty of "technical" books out there to explain the "whys and wherefores" of how this works.. the vast majority of us really aren't into this kind of stuff. I'm not a graphic artist --where this kind of explanation would be necessary.. I'm a digital photographer of basically family and recreational stuff.. and his "straight to the point" type instructions have, nevertheless, taught me how the different techniques work.. you just have to stick with it and work the tutorials. All of it eventually hangs off a neuron or two.. and the feeling of accomplishment is wonderful.
And --contrary to the other digs-- I find his humor really helpful during the stressful process of learning the application.
Training manual packs in step-by-step color examples.......2006-03-17
Digital photographers will find Scott Kelby's THE PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS BOOK FOR DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHERS focuses on two facets: the program's capabilities and the digital photographer's techniques. It shows 'how to do it' through examples and specific tips on choosing settings: then it tells why these settings work over other choices. Kelby edits Photoshop User magazine and trains thousands of digital photographers: their questions and experiences form the foundation of a training manual which comes packed with step-by-step color photo examples to demonstrate how altered photos differ depending on techniques.
Best Book for Photoshop Elements.......2006-02-24
I checked out at least 25 books out of our local library on the subject of Photoshop Elements. This was by far the best book available. The information is easy to understand and usable by the majority of people who use Photoshop elements. I liked it so much I purchased it.
Random access tips.......2004-11-26
Kelby doesn't seem to waste your time. He focuses on helping you use Elements 2 on digital images that you already have. Deliberately no discussion on what is involved in taking a photo, be it digital or analog. Instead, we get a grab bag of various techniques. Random access. Because you can read these in any order. They tend to address common problems.
Though the complexity of what you or Elements have to do in a tip can vary. For example, there is a tip on straightening crooked photos. Where you can define a line in the photo that is meant to be level. Then Elements lets you read this angle from the horizontal, and rotate the image by that amount, in the opposite direction. Very easy to understand. This was in a chapter on cropping and resizing. Actually, you should find that all the tips in this chapter are similarly easy.
But other chapters can get more involved. Like that on colour correction. You get into the depths of changing the HSL or tweaking a gradient map. The concepts here can be trickier. Luckily, the book shows how you can easily vary settings and see the effects of this on the image. Gives you a good intuitive feel of what the tips entail.
Not for Those New to Photoshop.......2004-11-05
If you're TOTALLY new to the Photoshop like I'm, Kelby's book isn't the ideal book to be initiated into the world of Photoshop. After having purchased Kelby's book, I realized I needed another book that is more suitable for my needs. I found that in Jan Kabili's Adobe Photoshop Elements 2: Complete Course. While Kelby tends to ASSUME that you know what he's talking about by leaving out lots of "little steps" required to follow his guidance, Kabili does a superb job with the details. While I was very frustrated trying to figure out what those "little steps" that Kelby seems to assume you already know, I found myself delighted with Kabili's simple step-by-step, click-this-and-click-that instructions that come with numerous helpful side tips.
I think Kelby's book is good for those with some prior knowledge and experience with the Photoshop, or someone with a very high level of intuitive sense. The reason why I'm giving this book only three stars is: Instead of spending so much ink and space on his endless attempts at humor (not that I have any problems with humor per se) I wish he had used all that energy towards filling in the details and with other useful tips, instead.
On a side note: I've been ordering a series of books from Amazon.com lately, and I'm a thoroughly satisfied customer. Great job, Amazon.com!!

A solid intro to Elements for traditional photographers.......2005-04-18
A solid introduction to Photoshop Elements 3 that will appeal to photographers moving from traditional film and darkroom printing to digital photography. While this book doesn't venture too far into 'advanced' techniques, and doesn't explore the 'hidden features' mentioned in some other Elements guides, it does cover all the essentials and includes some useful tips and techniques. Comparisons with film camera and darkroom techniques will appeal to traditional photographers.
If you're new to Elements, this guide will give you a thorough grounding, but if you've been using Elements for some time and are looking for more advanced techniques then you'll probably find another book more interesting.
