5 out of 5 stars remix: today's Bible.......2007-10-06

This Bible speaks to me in today;s language and makes it easy to read and to contemplate on. I enjoy reading lectionary lessons in traditional study bibles and then reading remix- it's a joy.

5 out of 5 stars ...and we who are about to die salute you..........2007-09-07

for gladiators in the Spirit only! this message is good news, indeed! i used to think i was so smart, reading the king james--in all it's stately majesty. but i didn't really get it, i guess, that all those good things in the KJV were written for believers hundreds of years ago. and that's great, but what about believers today? the gospel is so simple--just believe!

if GOD does not receive honor from men, what a wonder that women and men leave '5 stars' to commend His good Word! (might as a well buy yourself a five star notebinder and write your own words, if they're worth so much.) so, i suppose it's a silly thing to say 'yay' or 'nay' to this translation...why not judge for yourself? anyway, i would have rated it 'all stars', but that's more or less self-evident, so i guess i'll go with five just to catch a glance or two.

remember that 'theophilus' means one who loves GOD...i know that many believers think Theophilus was a patron to Luke, but i think 'theophilus' was merely a code, a hidden greeting--to us! to those who believe, and who love GOD (...'i decided to write it all out for you, most honorable [GOD-lover]'...)! throughout all the ages...no patron saints for us!

if you love the Lord, why not send His love to the ones He loves? 'The Message' is a good report, and one that ought to be shared, not unto unwise, but to us, and those who believe, redeeming the time because the time is soooo short. i wish i had a boombox to blast this Message to anyone who would hear! and that's a good re-port (James 1:5-8)!

4 out of 5 stars Print Issues.......2007-07-03

I love the Message version of the Bible, but in this edition the print is too small even for my teenagers. I understand the idea for keeping the volume small and cute for them to WANT to read it... but they are having problems with the print size. I really wish I had gotten them the full size version.

1 out of 5 stars questionable.......2007-05-06

As a divinity student that has to study Greek and be able to look at all the possible translations that Koine A Greek can take, I am disturbed when reading this. I do not have a problem with using contemporary language in the Bible. The NRSV is a great translation for this. However, when meanings are implied that the Greek does not imply there is cause for concern. Koine A is a difficult language to translate because it can be translated so many different ways yet the Message diverges even from these many different ways to interpret and seems to be promoting its own agenda. A translation that is promoting its own agenda needs to be questioned. If one does decide to read the translation be careful because the discrepencies are blatant.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-04-25

I never could really pick up the Bible (King James version) and read it without becoming very confused and bored. I picked up this book several months ago and could not put it down. I could easily understand what was being said and what was going on and I kept wanting to read more. It affected me in a way that any other version just couldn't cut it. It's great for teens and the younger generation who just can't wrap themselves around the scriptures the way they are written in other versions.

What's also good is that when you are actually being able to read through the Bible smoothly and without trying to sit and understand what exactly this or that sentence means, you want to pick up that KJV or NIV version and compare it to what this one says.

People are concerned that "The Message" takes away from the Bible's originality. Well, I disagree. The Bible has been written and re-written many, many times. It has been translated many times. There is nothing wrong with reading it in a "contemporary language" versus any other version that is out there. People should feel NO shame in reading the Bible in a way that they are comfortable with, in a way that speaks to them personally. People have different opinions and people understand things differently. Not everyone can say that they believe everything in the same way, 100%. I think that the older generations are so used to the way that they grew up with Christianity that it is just shameful if the younger generation does it any differently.

"The Message" helped me with my faith and really grasping Christianity and understanding what all of it means. If it wasn't for this book I would have never picked up the Bible, I would have stayed uninterested in learning anything about Christianity. I am sure that others can say the same thing. I highly recommend it! :)

Readers who have either found the Bible to be an intimidating proposition or who are so familiar with it that the words have lost their meaning will discover that Eugene Peterson's The Message: The Bible in Contemporary Language is a welcome way to read and reread one of the best-loved books of all time. It's directly translated from the Greek and Hebrew texts and is intentionally designed to be a reading Bible rather than a study Bible. Each of the 66 books has an introduction by Peterson, and there are no verse numbers to interrupt the flow of the passages.

The vibrant flavor of the text is evident from the opening verses of the book of Genesis: "First this: God created the Heavens and Earth--all you see; all you don't see. Earth was a soup of nothingness, a bottomless emptiness, an inky blackness."

There's renewed vigor in some of Jesus' most well-known words of the New Testament in John 3: "This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn't go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again."

Whether it's the poetry of the Psalms, the thundering tirades of the Old Testament prophets, or the ageless words of Jesus, Peterson breaths new life into timeless passages in this fresh-voiced paraphrase. --Cindy Crosby

Enthusiasm for The Message has boosted its popularity as the most reader-friendly Bible available today. Every book of Scripture unfolds like a page-turner you can't put down! With no distracting verse numbers or stiff, formal language, passages you've read many times before will come alive, revealing the vibrant energy of God's Word.

"I hope that when readers find the poetry, the stories, the prayers, the songs in this Book in their language -- the sort of language in which it was written -- they will read it from cover to cover, nonstop," says Eugene Peterson.

The challenge for the translators was to create a text that would make the same impact in the life of modern readers that the original text had for the original readers. In the New Living Translation, this is accomplished by translating entire thoughts (rather than just words) into natural, everyday English. The end result is a translation that is easy to read and understand and that accurately communicates the meaning of the original text.

"Whether it's the poetry of the Psalms, the thundering tirades of the Old Testament prophets, or the ageless words of Jesus, Peterson breathes new life into timeless passages in this fresh-voiced paraphrase."

5 out of 5 stars For entertainment, not Bible Study.......2007-06-14

I own several Bibles (NASB, NKJV, KJV, NIV, ESV), but "The Message", to me is a kind of mellow, easy read. Is it accurate to the Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic? No way! It's not supposed to be. As a matter of fact, the author makes it crystal clear. Would you use this text to research the Divine Council, the Nephilim, Gog/Magog Invasion or other Prophecy? I should think not! Yes, Jesus is referred to as Master in this text. Is it a New Age Agenda at work? Umm...nope. Take it for what it us: modern slang for lay-people to read. Once people get the point and become interested, then they take the next step. Once the Spirit begins to move in people, it's unstoppable.
That's my 2 cents....

5 out of 5 stars Good Reading Bible.......2007-06-08

This Bible is one that is to be read to get the message of the Bible across it is not ment to be one for study. The NIV, NASB, NRSV and other versions of the Bible are much better for study. But this is great if what you want to do is have the word of God speak to you. Different translations have different purposes. I own quite a few translations including the Message. Dr peterson's purpose was not to produce a Study Bible it was to get the message of the Bible out to a contemporary audience that speaks and reads modern English.

5 out of 5 stars Pastor Cherrey.......2007-05-28

As a minister I try to make the "Word of God" relevant for those I serve. The Message is a great reading of the Bible for those who want to "understand" what is said more so than look for an accurate translation. This book was a gift for one of my confirmation class who had the only perfect attendance this year. It isn't a substitute for the NRSV for translation. I would recommend it as a companion to the NRSV.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for self and group study.......2007-05-24

Whenever I need to study God's Word by myself I always use two sources: the NRSV and The Message. The Message is a must for all those people who are confused reading their bibles and are not theology scholars.

1 out of 5 stars What a Shame.......2007-03-27

Not that putting the Scriptures into words that can be understood is a bad thing, but that as a singular goal in and of itself is shameful. This method detaches the Scriptures from what they have always existed as: divinely beautiful, heroic verse, majestic Prose, a treasure from heaven, something that surpasses everything that conforms to the zeitgeist. In other words, the Scriptures are meant to transcend the fads of our day and lift us outside time into the presence of God. All that this and many other modern translations do is constantly remind us that we are in the 21st century and surrounded by multitudes of T.V.-softened brains and Britney-Spears-listening pop fanatics. The Scriptures are meant not only to be understood, but to communicate the life and grace of Christ to us: something that exists outside of time and is therefore unchanged by it. I am sorry to see such putrescent translations (and music and television) pouring out of the Evangelical Community. I am sick and tired of it and this translation just goes too far. "Contemporary Language"? That sounds like an excuse to be irreverent, shallow, and philosophically deprived. It is translations like this that secretly make me wish the Scriptures simply remained in Latin.

I pray that the youth of our day, instead of trying to conform Christianity to their own idioms, will transform themselves (or rather let God transform them) to fit with what Christianity is and always has been: the glorious and ancient faith. Those two paths are incompatible and so one must be chosen over the other. I choose the latter; people who insist on such rubbish as this choose the former.

A piece of advice: do you want the Scriptures to have more meaning for you? Turn off the television and start reading books: not the modern rubbish, but good, classical literature from around the world. Not the Newspaper, not the internet, but Books. Read Virgil, C.S. Lewis, Chesterton, Homer, Dickens...that should be a good list to start you off. Also, turn off your Britney Spears and either keep five minutes of silence or listen to Bach, Tallis, Byrd, and even Beethoven if you must. Once you do that for a time, the Scriptures will take on entirely new meaning, and you won't have to ruin their Sacredness in the process.

4 out of 5 stars The words flow off the pages........2007-07-17

I think it is important to study different translations of the Bible to grasp the more subtle shades of meaning in its text. Among my favorites are the New English Bible, Amplified Bible, and the good old King James Version, each of which have their place in my study.

The Message is the most recent addition to my library, and I am really enjoying its refreshing straight-to-the-point style. This is a Bible for the modern reader. By departing from more formal English, and presenting the text in the way most of us use the language, the stories and characters really come alive. This is a Bible for both casual browsing and extended reading. Where many translations often get bogged down in formality or tedium The Message flows easily, with great clarity.

Many years ago I read the entire King James Version from cover to cover. Fascinating as it was (and I learned a lot), much of the reading was pure drudgery. The simplicity of The Message has inspired me to begin reading it from Genesis to Revelation once again. This time I am picking up so much more detail in the stories than I ever have before, and I find I don't want to put it down.

The Message cannot replace other Bible translations, but it is a great place to start. More experienced readers will find it a great way to review well-known passages and give them a fresh perspective. I would give The Message five stars, but on occasion I find the words seem a bit trite, such as the use of the phrase "oh, yes!" for "amen."

This version of The Message has the largest type face of any version I have seen in stores, though it is still fairly small. The inclusion of verse numbers is important for making comparisons with other translations. Of all the versions of The Message I compared, this one seemed to offer the best value for the money. The publisher even provides a lifetime replacement guarantee on the binding.

5 out of 5 stars The Message Bbible is my favorite version.......2007-07-07

I have been reading the bible all my life. But this bible brings out God's word in the best way. It has helped me to understand the bible so much easier. I Actually enjoy reading it! I will just pick a story and read it all the way through. And, because I am a studier, I compare it to other translations. It is accurate, as accurate as any other translation. You just don't have to be a a scholar to understand it.
~Angel

5 out of 5 stars Good News made plain and simple.......2007-07-04

I could qoute scriptures before I could read but never have I seen a
translation that made reading the Bible more easy and so clear. It is as though I were listening to a friend tell the story. I love this book!

5 out of 5 stars This is my new favorite book.......2007-06-12

I have always read the Bible , but usually face issues understanding it. I purchased 2: one for me and one for my fiancee. My mother is a minister so i grew up in church. It's not surprising that it would be easier for me to be interested in reading the bible, not only to study Gods' word, but for enjoyment. What amazes me, is that my finacee (who does not have a strong background in being active in the church) will sometimes call me to discuss something he read in The Message. Praise the Lord!!!!!!
For a young couple, this is truely the work of God for the people of God. For anyone who has trouble understanding the language of the Bible, this is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Eugene H. Peterson understands human living and the spirit!.......2007-05-13

We have relied on Peterson's texts for personal use for many years. We have been so blessed in personal spirituality and study for guidance to assist others. The most recent opportunity to utilize Eugene H. Peterson's marvelous spirit and linguistic genius is to provide the text as a gift to persons we marry, baptize and just want to help appreciate The Message. Jesus lives; the Living Word revealed through these texts truly blesses all who visit him there.

5 out of 5 stars The Message Bible.......2007-09-06

This Bible is great. The modern day language is very easy to understand. I would recommend this Bible to anyone who has a hard time understanding the King James versoin.

4 out of 5 stars Nothing but praise for The Messenger.......2007-08-24

I bought this book because I thought it was in large print. I gave my last book to a person who really needed to read the word and she loved it -- so I let her keep it -- so I purchased this one for me.

The young lady who kept this book said the Messenger explained the bible to her in such a way she could understand it better. She gave nothing but praise for the Messenger.

5 out of 5 stars Feels like a movie.......2007-08-14

The wording of this Bible translation is truely significant.

It's like a movie script that's written about your life.

I recommend this Bible to anyone, especially those who never read the Bible before, but also for those who made the misstake of getting used to the Bible.

Read a bit every morning. If you're open to God, you'll notice that waking up this way couldn't be better!

(One thing to note though: The fontface of this version is pretty small. I'd get a larger format for pleasent reading and underlining.)

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I was looking for..........2007-08-08

I have been using the Message version for about two years. It has really opened the scriptures up to me in new and fresh ways. To be able to read the Bible as it was intended to be read, in common conversational language, is a great blessing. My favorite para-phrase!
I love the size and style of this one. It easy to carry around and to work without looking like you are a bible-thumper carrying some huge black KJV Bible. The remix version is great as it gives more detailed verse number descriptions for when you want to refer to other versions and compare.
A great daily reader!!!

THIS IS NOT A GOOD BIBLE TO HAVE AS YOUR ONLY RESOURCE. I LIKE THE WORDING ON THE VERSES ABOUT GODS LOVE AND GRACE. BUT THE WORDING ABOUT GODS JUDGEMENTS ARE SEVEARLY DOWN PLAYED TO THE POINT WHERE YOU DONT GET AN ACCURATE VIEW OF GODS WORD. I RECOMMEND NASV, NIV, NKJ.

It is a really nice bible for the price. It doesn't have religious look with gold pages. It also have life time warranty on its binding and cover by just mailing it back to company.

Also, turn off your Britney Spears and either keep five minutes of silence or listen to Bach, Tallis, Byrd, and even Beethoven if you must. Once you do that for a time, the Scriptures will take on entirely new meaning, and you won't have to ruin their Sacredness in the process.

Love this translation! Price terrific --- only downside is the pages are so thin that it's sometimes difficult going through them. However, that said, would purchase it again, for myself or as a gift!

5 out of 5 stars The Message Bible.......2006-02-28

I highly recommend this Bible because it is easy to understand in this contemporary language. The younger generation will greatly benefit from this Bible since they are so real and transparent. You will definitely love this Bible.

5 out of 5 stars The Message - gets it across.......2006-02-27

It is very refreshing to read God's word in the exact language that I use every day. It is so plain to understand, and it comes alive in a whole new way. I love the purple/stone cover. It feels very nice in my hands when I'm reading.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely Binding.......2007-03-10

We decided to purchase The Message to use as a companion for our NIV translation, to help us understand God's Word better.

We were thrilled when the Bible arrived, with a beautiful sturdy leather cover, and also with numbered verses. The translation is one of the best I have seen, really explaining what is meant, rather than a direct word-for-word translation.

The other day, my 8 year old was listening to Psalm 2 with the NIV translation, particularly:

2 The kings of the earth take their stand
and the rulers gather together
against the LORD
and against his Anointed One. [b]

3 "Let us break their chains," they say,
"and throw off their fetters."

He asked what "fetters" were, and I had to admit that I had no clue either. Infact, I also did not really know what was meant by those two verses. The Message translates it like this:

Earth-leaders push for position,
Demagogues and delegates meet for summit talks,
The God-deniers, the Messiah-defiers:
"Let's get free of God!
Cast loose from Messiah!"

What a wonderful translation! What an amazing binding to top it off!

I am reading more now than with other conventional Bibles. The words make it so I can visualize what's going on. I only wish I had gotten large print, but did not see it offered on Amazon.com.

1 out of 5 stars What a Shame.......2007-01-05

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful binding.......2006-07-05

This Bible is beautiful. The two tone leather and the embossing give it a masculine feel. I added a brass nameplate and would recommend this version to anyone wanting a more simple translation.

2 out of 5 stars Written with an opinion.......2007-10-22

The Message seemed like a great idea at first, being written in contemporary language. However, you will find that it is an interpretation -- it is written to convey the perspective the authors have of each passage. This is one of the LEAST "neutral" or "true" (not saying it's untrue, but perhaps not true to the original context) interpretations of the Bible out there. In other words, it has a very strong slant to it. If you are expecting an unbiased translation of the Bible, you will be very disappointed. Definitely check it against a more neutral translation. You get a modern day voice, but it has a very narrow perspective. My college religion professors pretty much banned this edition, calling it "flawed" (their words, not mine). It's an easy read and a unique translation, but perhaps not for you if you are looking for the precise words and neutral interpretation of the Bible.

5 out of 5 stars The Message is Wonderful.......2007-10-04

I am a United Methodist minister who has studied the Bible all my life. I have read every translation I could find plus the Greek New Testament. While the Message is not a true translation in that it is verse by verse. It is thought by thought taking several verses together and rewriting them. The contemporary vocabulary makes it easy to understand. I was able to get more meaning from the Old Testament Prophets than I ever had. I would recommend this book to someone who wants to study the Bible but does not have a deep background in the scriptures. The Mystery of God's Will: Living the Christian Life as Seen in Ephesians

Book Description

Those familiar with any part of the Bible will recognize John 3:16, but find a mind-altering difference. The words are fresh, new, and sound like the 21st century. That's because it is from The Message, a presentation of the Word of God crafted for a modern age. Unlike other audio Bibles, The Message was fashioned by Eugene Peterson to be read aloud, not as a study Bible. This is read by Kelly Ryan Dolan and Carol Nix.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars awesome!!!!.......2007-09-17

like my title this version is amesome. it's cheap enough to buy it. i have listened to it at work and learned so much, i also have been listening to it as i read the bible, so i am hearing and reading it. for if i listen i can drift thoughts, or things of many other things, if i just read it late at night i can fall asleep, or realize the last 2 chapers, i don't know what i was reading. so by doing both i have been getting heaps out of the old testament, which is hard for people to get warmed up to. But i sure have. you'll like it.

5 out of 5 stars Great way to "read" the Bible.......2007-06-18

Having enjoyed the hard copy versions of The Message for years, I decided to invest in the CD version and was very glad that I did. Each chapter of The Message has a brief snazzy musical intro (which I *really* like) with a woman's voice giving a background about the church, the times and the general history. I suppose I glossed over this part in the written form, but I surely do enjoy listening to it on tape. It really helps put the whole thing in context.

I'm always hesitant to invest in these "books on tape" because sometimes, the reading so dry and boring, but the reading on The Message is strong, clear and interesting. The intro to Matthew even features Eugene Peterson himself, explaining a little background about how he wrote "The Message."

I am *not* an audio-based learner but more of a visual learner, yet my thoughts don't drift whilst listening to these CDs. I find it very easy to stay focused and really pay attention and soak up the meanings.

I've listened to these CDs for several years now and they never grow old. I love the layout and organizations of the tracks, the little case (very handy), the narrator's voice, the music and above all, I love listening to The Message.

5 out of 5 stars The Message is the way to go!.......2007-01-19

It's amazing how easy this Bible is to understand. It definitely was a great purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Hearing and Vision Impaired.......2007-01-10

I purchased this for my Mom who is both hard of hearing, and is also loseing her sight, and can no longer read. She has thouroughly enjoyed this version of the Bible, and listens to a portion of it daily.

5 out of 5 stars easy listening.......2007-01-04

The Message on cd is read by an American male voice, easy to listen to and very natural sounding. It is easy to use because each chapter is a new track. The intros are read by an English sounding female voice. I chose this version of the Bible on cd because the man who reads it was the most natural sounding in comparison to other audio-Bibles.

4 out of 5 stars compact and lightweight.......2007-03-13

Nice exterior, lightweight and very compact - my husband uses this bible for traveling. A refreshing translation.

1 out of 5 stars Intentionally Altered Meanings.......2007-02-24

Several passages are paraphrased in a way that their meanings are totally off-base. For one example, look at Matthew 18:17.

Proper translations:

"...But if he refuses to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector." New King James Version

"...and if he refuses to listen even to the church, treat him as you would a pagan or a tax collector." New International Version

The Message:

"...If he won't listen to the church, you'll have to start over from scratch, confront him with the need for repentance, and offer God's forgiving love."

In case you were wondering, Jesus' audience would have treated a heathen/pagan or a tax collector as an outcast/outsider or a traitor. I have no idea how Peterson came up with "start over...confront...and offer God's forgiving love". As a high school English teacher, I would not accept this as a proper paraphrase from my teenage students. It's actually quite pathetic, in my humble opinion.

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2007-01-15

Excellent service and excellent Bible. My 16 year old daughter loves it. The Bible was brand new with cool mustard-color-textured cover. It is, of course, not a translation, but a paraphrase. The point is to start reading. Thank you for great product and service.

5 out of 5 stars Recommended for EVERYONE Interested in Going Deeper in Bible Study.......2006-05-21

Quick version:
This is a wonderful addition to anyone's Bible study, and works great for younger students who need help understanding and relating to the text as well as older readers who may enjoy a fresh perspective. The pocket edition in particular is great for someone looking for a travel size (who does not have vision problems).

Expanded coverage:
I cannot say enough about the Message in general, as I have found it to be a wonderful translation that really drives home the applicability of the Bible to our everyday lives, even today.

The Message//Remix is the same as the original Message, but with quick-reference verse numbers.

I should probably go ahead and put a disclaimer that I am not some crazed religious fanatic, but simply an average college kid that tries to follow Christ as best as I can. I know everyone clings to their opinions of translations, but this really is a great one to keep things real. Keep your NIV near by, but try this one as well.

As far as this particular version of the Message, the Mustard Pocket Edition (which, oddly, Amazon does not have clearly labeled - please note that this IS THE POCKET EDITION, and IS SMALLER than the "regular" Message), it is also a great buy.

The Amazon price is the most competitive I have seen while shopping around.

The size is great - it is much smaller than the original edition, meaning it fits in small spaces (purses, for instance) better. However, if you have trouble reading small print, the pocket edition may not be for you.

Also, according to the inside cover of my copy, there is a lifetime guarantee: "This Message//Remix is manufactured to serve you for a lifetime. If at any time the binding fails because of manufacturing defects or you just wear it out from use, you may return it for a free replacement. ... If the same binding is no longer available, your Bible will be replaced with one of the same or greater value."
That's commitment there.

5 out of 5 stars Message//REMIX from a Youth Leader.......2005-08-29

I am a youth leader @ Threads Church in Kalamazoo, MI and I have found that the Message//REMIX is the best choice for the High School and Jr. High students to help them explore God's Words in a language that is actually understandable to them without carrying around a bible dictionary or a concordance. While I have many resources to use, I use the REMIX as my Bible as well.
