For a little one who is reluctant to go to bed, sometimes a silly book is just the ticket. And when it comes to silly books, Sandra Boynton is the undisputed queen. In The Going to Bed Book, an ark full of animals watches the sun go down and then prepares for bed. They take a bath ("in one big tub"), find pajamas, brush their teeth, do exercises up on deck (imagine an elephant jumping rope, a moose lifting weights, and a pig doing handstands), and finally say good night.
The moon is high. The sea is deep.
They rock
and rock
and rock
to sleep.
Boynton's inimitable animal characters have graced the pages of scads of picture books over the years. She has an extraordinary knack for knowing what appeals to small children: simple rhymes, goofy animals in goofy settings, and sweet, comforting stories. This book, along with her many other board-book titles (Moo, Baa, La La La!, But Not the Hippopotamus, and others) will surely remain a favorite. (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter

Customer Reviews:
Not fantastic but mildly cute........2007-10-25
I am not blown away by this book. It was mildly entertaining for any reading level but, as a parent and now a grandmother reading to a child, I've read better.
A great chaser...for snooze time.......2007-10-24
This is a great snooze-time book, although our child prefers the Margaret Wise Brown classics (Big Red Barn, Goodnight Moon) before going to bed, this whopper-sized book makes for a great chaser. If that doesn't work, I just find an additional book. The reason I'm giving this book 4 stars is that the animals take a bath and get into pajamas before excercising and going to bed. Excercising before going to bed? Taking a bath before excercising? What are these animals thinking?
Cute but too short.......2007-10-10
I am forever searching for bedtime books because we rotate them out at night and it is always good to find new ones. I was really excited by reading the reviews of this one as we are big fans of Boynton. It is a cute book, but I think it is too short. Perhaps my daughter just likes to have a little more time reading before going to bed but I really wish it was just a few pages longer like some of her others.
a great book!.......2007-10-02
my daughter loves this book! we used to read a different story each night, but we have been stuck on this book for a couple of months, now. the story is fun and the pictures are bright, cute and great for kids to look at. it is the perfect length and works great for our night time reading ritual.
Delightful!.......2007-09-19
This book is utterly delightful! I bought it 3 years ago for my youngest son and it was hands down his favorite book. We read it so much that we still recite it by heart. Sandra Boynton has a way of writing books that not only delight the child, but it's infectious! (My little 1 year old daughter who is fascinated by belly buttons- also adores The Belly Button Book by the same author.) The Going To Bed Book is an absolute must for snuggly, silly bedtime routines (that actually are looked forward to!) with your little ones. It sits right next to another old favorite of ours...Goodnight Moon. =0)

The thinking's not fuzzy in these board books, but the animals certainly are. Sandra Boynton's familiar furry creatures introduce simple concepts in this bright collection of four books, replete with clever line drawings. In Horns and Toes and In Between, three horned monsters teach the parts of the body in rhyme: "...and we have a fuzzy TUMMY that we all like to pat / and a little BELLY BUTTON in the middle of that." The Going to Bed Book gets a Noah's Ark of animals organized for bed: "They hang their towels on the wall / and find pajamas, big and small." Opposites is just that: cute animals "high and low / fast and slow / heavy and light / day and night." In the rhyming reader But Not the Hippopotamus, a hippo finds himself on the outs as "a cat and two rats are trying on hats. / But not the hippopotamus. / A moose and a goose together have juice. / But not the hippopotamus." Rest assured the hippo finds love at the end. (Baby to preschool) --Claire Dederer
Customer Reviews:
Boyton Rocks!.......2007-09-24
Sandra Boyton books are always a big hit at our house-she writes some terrific children's books that all kids seem to love!
4 great books.......2007-09-03
The Going to Bed book is my son's favorite of all time and all of the books' clever sing-song rhymes make even adult readers smile- like when they all go up to exercise after they've bathed and brushed their teeth.
Pick and Choose your Boyntons.......2007-09-03
Sadly, not only our toddler (18 mos) but we parents, as readers, were disappointed in this Boynton collection, Although the title of "Greatest Hits" implied that these books were among children's favorites. We have found this not to be true. While reading the books aloud they do not have the lyrical magic of other Boynton's like "Hippos Go Berserk," "Snuggle Puppy," "Barnyard Dance, " or "Moo, Baa, La La La!." Sandra Boynton has the gift of creating language and drawings that touch children's imaginations. These books aren't the best examples of that talent. Buy Boynton, but buy other books instead of her Greatest Hits, Vol. II.
Boynton's Books.......2007-07-16
I bought these books and a 'horned'stuffed animal for a baby shower gift. I like to give books for little ones. They don't out grow them right away. Always been a fan of this author. Very funny and cute pictures.
Love this set!.......2007-03-29
I purchased this set for my 10 month old daughter. They are sturdy board books, beautifully illustrated with fun, rhythmic text. The hippo book is our absolute favorite. Highly recommended!!

Although I'm Not Going to Get Up Today! is aimed at young readers, it just gets better as you get older. Only after you've weathered more than few world-weary years can you fully appreciate this book's profound and universal message: "The alarm can ring. The birds can peep. My bed is warm. My pillow's deep. Today's the day I'm going to sleep!" But the rhyming words of Dr. Seuss and goofy illustrations from James Stevenson will surely get more than a few giggles from the old and the young, as everyone in town--from brothers and sisters to the police and the Marines--conspires to get our little hero out of bed. But, as the sleepy boy says, "nobody's going to get me up, no matter what he does." (Not with tickling nor shaking nor cold water on the head.) "Nothing's going to get me up. Why can't you understand! You'll only waste your money if you hire a big brass band." (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes
Book Description
Illus. in full color. "A rhyming story that is full of laughs. 'The alarm can ring. The birds can peep....Today's the day I'm going to sleep,' says a lazy boy one morning, and despite a pail of icy water, television coverage, and the arrival of the Marines, he vows to stay in bed--and he does! The repetition of concepts and words will keep children turning the pages, as will the energetic drawings. A sure draw for early readers."--Booklist.
Customer Reviews:
I am not going to get up today.......2007-08-23
We're big Dr Suess fans, so we loved this book. A bit different from his others, and a twist at the end. It's a fun, light hearted story that we really enjoy reading. Be warned though, the boy in the story doesn't get up today!
I Am Not Going To Get Up Today! .......2007-03-21
We LOVE this book! It is a funny twist on a daily battle in our house of getting up for school each day. We had a lot of fun reading it together and my 7 year old had a great time reading it himself. He even moved this to his new favorite Dr. Seuss book!
I Am Not Going To Get Up Today! (Beginner Books(R)).......2006-03-17
What can I say? Seuss is always great!
Worst Dr. Seuss book ever!.......2006-01-15
I can't believe this book is written by Dr. Seuss! It is so boring, dull, and has the weirdest ending ever. It teaches bad lessons to kids - all day long the kid refuses to get up and in the end his Mom looks at him sheepishly along with his two siblings while he smiles triumphantly in his bed. "I guess he really means it," says Mom. Huh? What kind of lesson is that? The poetry is not clever, fun or catchy like most of his other works. The illustrations are not done by Dr. Seuss and they are not very interesting or coloful. Very, very ho-hum!
Don't woozy-snooze through this!.......2005-04-27
Have you ever had one of those mornings when you just can't get out of bed? This video might not help that, but it is very funny. In I Am NOT Getting Up Today a small boy almost begs his family and friends to just leave him alone so he can sleep. I think The Shape of Me and Other Stuff is educational, because it talks about shapes. Great Day for UP is very clever. I sometimes find myself jumping whenever the word "up" is metioned. In A People House is one of the more humorous stories. When a couple come home to see a bird and a mouse exploring their house they actually throw them out. It's very funny. So, don't get drowsy, buy this Begginer Book video.

bueno.......2007-03-11
I bought this for my grand daughter, we want her to have two languages, and we love Sandra Boynton,so I appreciated her making this fun book! Thanks!
Buy the English version only!.......2005-08-21
"The Going to Bed Book" is a favorite of my little nephew. I've read it to him since he was an infant ... but he doesn't know almost any English. So you can imagine I looked forward to the Spanish version, so that I could read both to him for some bilingual cuddle time. BIG MISTAKE! This translation is one of the worst I've ever seen in terms of capturing the spirit of the original.
Sure, in literal terms, the following express the same dictionary meaning:
(English) "They hang their towels on the wall / and find pajamas, big and small."
(Spanish, back-translated) "They hang their towels on the wall / and look for pajamas, big and little, as you can see."
(Cuelgan las toallas en la pared / y buscan piyamas grandes y pequeñas, como se ve.)
Gone is the rhyme. Gone is the use of small, familiar words so the child can pretend to "read" along. There's an occasional rhyme ("resquicio" / "ejercicio"), but for the most part it's a charmless and clumsy butchering of the text we loved so much.
You may think it's asking too much to expect a translated version to be as good as the original. It's not. Dr. Seuss's Green Eggs and Ham is delightful in Spanish. Sandra Boynton's own Moo, Baa, La, La, La has a Spanish translation that's as precious and easy to read as you could ever want (see my review of Muú, Beee, Así Fue). It's tricky work and requires careful substitution, but it can be done if a company does what is necessary to secure a good translation. This time they didn't -- maybe next time they will.

And Barney shows her how much room there is for a good night story! The audience will really relate to this story, which focuses on an important toddler developmental moment.
Customer Reviews:
Sweet book........2007-10-17
This is a sweet book that has Barney share the difference between the crib and the "big bed". It serves its purpose to encourage the child to see that going to the big bed is a good thing. Not the best book on the subject but if they like Barney (and what child doesn't?)they will like this.
Good book.......2006-04-25
My 2 year old loves this book. We are about ready to transition her to a big bed and I hope this book helps. We have already tried once and didn't succeed since she wanted to be back in her crib, but it could have been too early. I think reading these types of books to her will help her to understand this time. She also loves Barney, so that helps. Good book.
Book Description
The beloved Boynton bedtime book now has a coordinating embroidered 12" X 16" blankie, made of soft 100% cotton flannel. Just right for providing quiet comfort to little ones from now through, oh, maybe a few years past college.
Book Description
The clock strikes nine. Jake should be asleep. But he's decided to stay up all night long. "I'm not going to bed," he tells his dad. Now the fun begins--or does it? At 9:15 he turns on the TV. At 10:00 a mouse runs round the house. At 11:00 an owl hoots, shadows shade the wall, and Jake shivers a little. Will he make it till morning?
