Book Description

Butch O'Neal is a fighter by nature. A hard-living ex-homicide cop, he's the only human ever to be allowed in the inner circle of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. And he wants to go even deeper into the vampire world-to engage in the turf war with the lessers. His heart belongs to a female vampire, Marissa, an aristocratic beauty who's way out of his league. And if he can't have her, then at least he can fight side by side with the Brothers.

But fate curses him with the very thing he wants. When Butch sacrifices himself to save a civilian vampire from the slayers, he falls prey to the darkest force in the war. Left for dead, he's found by a miracle, and the Brotherhood calls on Marissa to bring him back, though even her love may not be enough to save him.

4 out of 5 stars Lover Revealed.......2007-10-23

This was a nice addition to the series. I was not disappointed in the book at all. The book did not forget characters that you were interested in, but went into deeper detail on the ones you purchased the book for. A good read all around.

3 out of 5 stars Glad it's out of the way..........2007-10-09

I have loved all of the other BDB books (Zadist being my favorite). But I have to say, I'm really glad this one is out of the way. I've never really cared about Butch and Marissa, she seems whinny and vapid and he goes from being all macho around the brothers to slobbering all over himself cause a pretty girl is near by. But there are some interesting things learned in this book and it held my attention through the end.
At least it's done and hopefully from here the rest of the books will be as good and engrossing as the first three were.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite JR book yet!!!!.......2007-10-02

I loved this book!!!! Butch is my all time favorite character (so far), I knew he would end up with Marissa. But the dynamics and intimacy between Butch and V was awesome, great, fantastic. I loved the way JR wrote the story and created that intimacy between the two guys without it being overtly sexual. I am so glad Marissa finally grew a back bone and stood up to her brother. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

5 out of 5 stars I liked it.......2007-09-30

I liked this book. Actually I have enjoyed all of the BDB books by JR Ward (1-4).

5 out of 5 stars NOT AS GOOD AS THE OTHERS.......2007-09-25

THIS BOOK SHOULD HAVE BEEN ABOUT V AND BUTCH. THEY HAD THE BEST RELATIONSHIP. I WAS READING HOPING TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THEM. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BUTCH AND MARISSA DID NOT DO MUCH FOR ME. HAVING SAID THAT, I LIKED THE BOOK, CAN'T WAIT TO READ ABOUT V LOVE HIM

There exists a secret band of brothers like no other-six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. Yet none of them relishes killing more than Wrath, the leader of The Black Dagger Brotherhood.

The only purebred vampire left on earth, Wrath has a score to settle with the slayers who murdered his parents centuries ago. 5 out of 5 stars Finally!.......2007-10-16

Finally, after a couple years reading new authors that were good but not great-I think I have a new favorite author, really. This was an amazing read. At first I was a bit put off by the term definintions in the first few page, but found I appreciated this later. I loved Wrath. I know he was a bit overwhelming, bossy all that, but it worked for me. Geez he was sexy as heck. All of the secondary characters are strong, sexy and show promise for many excellent future books. I was sorry we did not get to know more about Darius before......never mind don't want to spoil anything. The lessers are freaky and a new twist to the vampire slayers. Just read it. YOu'll be ordering the rest of the series. I know I did--and I admit I am picky, I don't give everything 5 stars. This one deserves it!

4 out of 5 stars A fun, stimulating read. .......2007-10-14

Vampires have long been symbols of power and sexuality, and the author of this series definitely takes this theme seriously! This is an interesting take on vampires and those who hunt them. The characters are interesting, compelling, and surprisingly believable. Themes of family, brotherly love, romantic love, honor, and loyalty really suck you in. The pop culture references (slang and music references) date the book, but it's still plenty entertaining. The sex scenes are really great! A lot of women (including myself) love a seriously physical, sexually aggressive guy.... and these male vampire characters are just that. Very hot. Love the whole series! I ordered and read them all within a two week period.

5 out of 5 stars Its better on the dark side.......2007-10-09

This book is the first in an excellent series. It is technically in the romance aisle (and let me tell you it is VERY explicit) but it leads with the vampire fantasy world and doesn't deviate an inch the whole way through. You will get sucked into the world of the brotherhood and wont be able to turn it down. I read the book straight through in a day and a half and then immediately went out and bought the rest. There is a solid story line and graphic-no-holds-barred sex that could be a cameo in basic instinct. I loved this book and I know you will too. J. R . Ward has the skills to draw you in with well defined characters that make you care about them, then blows your mind and makes you tingly with what goes on behind closed doors!

5 out of 5 stars Definately a Keeper!!!! One of my Absolute Favorites!.......2007-09-20

I have three words for you.....OH. MY. GOD!!!!!!I could not turn the pages fast enough. What an amazing series...amazing story....amazing book! I highly recommend this for anyone who likes Kenyon or Knight the writing and character development in this is a step above. If your thinking twice about buying this series, just buy it, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!!.......2007-09-16

This is one of my all time favorite romance novels. Before meeting the Black Dagger Brotherhood, I had absolutely no interest in paranormal romance. I'd always seen the characters in other books of this genre as being creepy, to say the least. My sister forced me to read this book while on vacation.
WoW!! J D Ward's protagonists are so well-written, so engaging and have such gut-wrenching appeal, I was hooked after chapter 2. She has created a completely unique vampire culture - complete with language (each book has a "glossary of terms"), social traditions and even anatomical/biochemical details unique to her brand of vampire.
If you have never been a fan of this genre...please give this book and the others in the series a try. You will NOT regret it!!

Just like to add that I loved the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, and This book is HOT!!! a Must read. Just like Dark Lover.

5 out of 5 stars Emotional Vampire Romance - interesting combo..........2007-09-23

I have read several of J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood novels and have really enjoyed them all. I read this one out of order and so I knew Mary and Rhage would, of course, end up together, but I couldn't figure out how it was going to work out. I love that in a book - I can know the ending as long as I don't know the path we're going to take to get there.

I enjoyed the plot and the excitment of this novel as well as this series. It does help to read the books in order as there is a continuation of plot from one book to the next, but Ward does a pretty good job of explaining things in each book so you don't HAVE to.

All in all, a great book.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE JR Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood!!.......2007-09-20

This is my favorite of the four books to date, about Rhage and Mary. I love how Ward portrays the brothers as both warriors but also as men with their own strengths and weaknesses. The series is absolutely terrific, and I've read and reread these books all summer! They definitely need to be read in order, though. Can't wait for the new one!

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly addictive.......2007-09-19

This is the second book in J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood, and though I've only read this book and the first "Dark Lover" and I can easily say these are the most addictive adult vampire romance series I've read. J.R. Ward creates her own vampire legends, with vampire royalty, vampire civilians, human civilians and "Lessers"--humans that have been changed into vampire slayers by the Omega. There are beautiful love scenes, very scary villains, graphic fight scenes with interesting futuristic technology, and excellent plot and pacing.
"Lover Eternal" I think is even better than the first "Dark Lover" (which was very good btw), in that the plot is more emotional, heart wrenching, exciting, and we get to know the brotherhood better. J.R. was able to balance Mary and Rhage's tale along with John's story and allude to the next book with Bella and Zhadist. Can't wait to read the next book!!!

Book Description

Even within the vampire brotherhood, Zsadist is feared. Still bearing the scars from a tortured past, he is renowned for his unquenchable fury. Anger is his only companion, and terror is his only passion-until he rescues a beautiful female from the evil Lessening Society.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars the best in the series yet...........2007-10-20

even from the first, Dark Lover, Zsadist's character was shrouded in darkness and even a hint of menace. there were times that i thought to myself, how can the other brothers stand him? why is he even in the brotherhood? he's so dangerous, especially to the women (and not in a sexy-dangerous way, but in an assassin-lethal kind of way).

then by the near-end of Lover Eternal, Z's persona comes into a new light. he was still dangerous and would kill anyone who pisses him off, but one will just have to see the chemistry between him and bella, and you can see how almost all that angst is directed against himself. you'd sense that he has a severe case of emotional trauma that is going to be heart-wrenching (once you read Lover Awakened).

his story opens with his maniacal search for bella after her capture by the lessers. bordering on desperate, he has no care for his safety (sometimes even for the safety of the brothers), his only goal was to find her. even in the first few pages of the book, you'd know how much he feels for Bella. for those keeping tabs on the black dagger series, you'd know that this is a turn-around for Z's character. Z - who was always coldly sinister, always in control in any situation no matter how dire, who even seems to not care about anyone at all, and is always the loner.

but in this book, Z goes through a whirlwind of emotions. his acquaintance with bella reinforces his low and even degrading view of himself. readers are given the full, heartbreaking story behind his scars and his perverse relationship with his twin, Phury. you'll come to realize why Z puts anyone who cares for him at bay, to the point that he lashes out at them. for him, his life is nothing more than an endless yawning darkness of loneliness, pain and bitterness. until bella.

with bella, he is forced to confront his demons again, for bella finds in him something and someone worth loving. she sees through the barrier that he puts up, and stubbornly hammers it down to make Z realize that, even if he was brutal and cruel, he has even greater capacity for honor and love.

i wont even comment on the sex scenes (yes they were steamy). all i can say is that, that level of passion is fitting for the aggressive character of Z. you cant expect anything less. but the real gem of the story is the emotions and (bear with me on this)the soul-searching Z went through to finally let himself love and be loved.

there were times i felt sad as well for Phury. almost the exact opposite of Z, he nonetheless has a lot of emotional baggage that he so valiantly strives to hide. i can't wait for his story!

in the mean time, Lover Awakened stands as my favorite from the black dagger series. keep it up ms ward!

I read all the BDB books (5 so far), and this is still for me the best one. Zsadist will always be my favorite vampire! Hope JR Ward continues to write books of this excellent quality.

5 out of 5 stars My perfect vampire tale.......2007-09-27

AWESOME!!! The best of the first three!!! I absolutely loved Bella and Zsadists' story!!! Having read book one (Dark Lover) and book two (Lover Eternal) I was already addicted to the series. As amazing as the first two books were, this tale struck a chord in me, it's about facing terrible personal demons and finding a way to heal, something we've all been through. This was the tightest page turner of the three, the books just keep getting better and better. This had the most plot, but was crafted in such away that I never wanted to put the book down, even after my mind was numb from reading. And Zsadist and Bella are two unforgettable characters, their story is touching, deep, emotional. I was so sad when I got to the last page, but I've got more of the series to read, and re-read again!

5 out of 5 stars OH MY GOD.......2007-09-25

Book Description

Dear Reader, Being trapped in a bedroom with a woman is a grand thing. Being trapped in hundreds of bedrooms over two thousand years isn't. And being cursed into a book as a love-slave for eternity can ruin even a Spartan warrior's day. As a love-slave, I knew everything about women. How to touch them, how to savor them, and most of all how to pleasure them. But when I was summoned to fulfill Grace Alexander's sexual fantasies, I found the first woman in history who saw me as a man with a tormented past. She, alone, bothered to take me out of the bedroom and into the world. She taught me to love again. But I was not born to know love. I was cursed to walk eternity alone. As a general, I had long ago accepted my sentence. Yet now I have found Grace-the one thing my wounded heart cannot survive without. Sure, love can heal all wounds, but can it break a two thousand year old curse? Julian of Macedon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I'm Hooked..........2007-10-20

I really enjoyed this book. I accidently read Night Pleasure first and then read this second. I loved both books. I like Sherrilyn Kenyon's writing style. The book is fast reading. You won't want to put it down. It had me laughing. Lots of foreplay. Ms. Kenyon has me hooked.

4 out of 5 stars Every Gal's Dream.......2007-09-30

So yes it's an absurd premise about a god-like creature trapped in a book that can only be released to be a woman's sex slave but come one ladies. If you're reading romance novels than no doubt you have had a day dream along these lines. What if Michelangelo's David could come to life just for you? Sexy tension throughout the book, nice characters with a sweet plot. I only got frustrated at the end when it seemed to get a little bit overlong. Also, the Gods in the book spoke in such casual and flippant ways that the writing seemed a little bit juvenile. The dialogue could have used some work. However, overall a very nice book that will please everyone who reads it I'm sure.

3 out of 5 stars I'm currently in a love/hate relationship with Sherrilyn Kenyon.......2007-09-11

I think she's a good writer with some interesting plot lines and characters. I just wish EVERYONE didn't turn out to be immortal/supernaturally-abled/Gods or Goddesses, etc. Still, this series makes for fun reading when in between books.

3 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-26

A Macedonian warrior apparently ran afoul of the usual nogoodnik Greek godlings. As such, his curse is basically to hang out in limbo until the next airhead woman that wants a sex toy learns how to summon him.

This one, a bit more shy and retiring than the ones that just want to be shagged immediately, wants to find out what his story is, first. As he says, it is pretty rare for them to want to dress him.

The odd godling does appear, too.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful!!.......2007-08-22

Verry far fetched but verry captivating. But isn't that what fiction is all about. I liked it so much, I went out and bot the rest of her books. Ha ha.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-10-25

J.R. Ward is very good at making sure you definitely see the characters in your head. I love Vampire, Drama, Love stories all wrapped up into one book

5 out of 5 stars enjoyed it soo much.......2007-10-24

I finished the book last night and I have to say that I was suprised to have enjoyed it soo much since I had read everyones comments before hand. The ending works for me because I can't think of any other way they could have been together. Who knows I'm sure down the line it's going to come in handy for something. Can't wait to read Phury's book, the set up looks good.

I never felt like the book overshadowed anything because JR Ward has always written the stories with mulitiple storylines going on and I like that better than the standard two character storyline. I think we learn a lot about V's past and that helps the reader understand why he's the way he is. I'm also glad they "resolved" the Butch/V thing.

So overall I liked the story and what we've learned so far and can't wait for the next one. I think that instead of going into the story with your own expectations of what you want to happen, just enjoy it for what it is let it be. I would also recommend reading Tino Georgiou's masterpiece--The Fates--if you haven't read it yet.

3 out of 5 stars Indifferent.......2007-10-23

I'm a huge fan of this series and could not wait to read V's book, but I was way disappointed. It was ok, just not expected, and the ending sucked. I am curious to see what will happen with Phury, hopefully it will be better than this book.

3 out of 5 stars Too many people and not enough heart.......2007-10-23

I questioned the other reviewers marks until I read the book. I am a speedy reader, but it still took me three days because I kept putting the book down to do something else.

V and his Mom and a little bit of John is OK, but way too much about Phury and the Primale. I wanted to know more about V and how things would actually work with his mate and his arm and his mother and reproduction.

Phury was a distraction I didn't need and didn't want. His wasn't a "teaser" appearance, but an actual storyline! I didn't need more information about the "chosen" yet, and I wanted to get more into the evil directoress at a better time... like in Phury's OWN book.

So, Go back to doing one Brother and mate with sides like John and the other newbies. I loved the Butch/V brotherhood and wanted to see more of V and his twin and his twins wife interaction. Give me more Brother and less "brothers".

3 out of 5 stars Not feeling it...........2007-10-23

I own all 5 of her books and the first 4 are really great. Ms. Ward is a very detailed author, lots of plots, witty but ghettolicious dialogue, all in all never boring books. This last one felt like Vishous meets Caspar the friendly ghost. I liked Jane's character but she should have stayed dead and she (Ms. Ward) could have added another book to the series with a more solid heroine for V that does not deflate, or can be seen through. It takes a large stretch of the imagination to compensate for the conclusion of this book.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good read.......2007-10-25

The Dragon & the Virgin Princess by Jo Beverly to me was meant to be over the top silliness and not to be taken so seriously. Maybe I'm the only one who go that. It was one of my favorites of the 4.

The Dragon & the Dark Knight by Mary Balough was boring. Sorry, I've never been much of a fan and never could get into any of her books and never understood why this author was so highly reviewed.

Anna and the King of Dragons was my favorite. I just loved this love story. Very sweet and magical. I just wish it had been a whole book and more detailed.

The last book was ok. Good read.

2 out of 5 stars okay, but not great.......2007-07-29

There are four stories in this anthology and I liked two of them and didn't care for the other two. Out of the the two I liked only 1 of them was really that enjoyable a read.

The first story is by Jo Beverly and frankly it was really, really disturbing. Basically the heroine is a virgin sacrifice for a dragon that comes once every 8 years (the sacrifice isn't actually killed, just a cup full of there blood is taken on top of this special rock and give to the dragon to drink. Then, they go off and live regular lives). Not too bad. But, when the dragon shows up this time-early-the dragon rider takes her instead of the blood intending to bring her back to his land and, as we find out, slice her open from top to bottom and let the dragon drink her dry. Yes, that's about how it was described. Apparantly, in order for a dragon to have an egg, they have to eat this special blood the princess' family has and because the last dragon didn't get any blood apparantly there's been some crisis and there won't be any dragons. Now, the reasons for this aren't really answered and it's a little confusing so I won't get into it. what I found really disturbing was the dragon constantly talking about the princess' blood as 'yummy', how dragon drool was considered an aphrodisiac, how they ate food chewed up in the dragon's mouth (it was just one gross thing after another, frankly), but the most disturbing part was when the princess is laying on the dragon rock, on some weird drug. The dragon has slit open her thighs and the princess is rolling around laughing giddily and begging the dragon to 'take more! take more!" . I can't even describe how disturbing the scene was to me. If you're the slightest bit squeamish, skip this one.

The second story is more your traditional english dragon story. A knight is hired to kill a dragon that's supposedly been torching local villages. He saves a young woman, discovers she part dragon and the main dragon is her grandfather. They fall love while fighting a local evil Lord. It was a sweet story and very reminiscent of a vintage romance. The author also had a unique take on what a dragons 'hoard' was. I liked this one.

The third story took us to Japan where the hero is a dragon that shapeshifts into a samuri. This one should have been better. The main problem was the heroine, who acted in an absurd way, especially given this is supposed to take place in the 1600's. For instance, at the opening of the book she is contemplating having to go to work as a low class prostitute becuase she has no friends, no money, etc(she's been in the country for at least 4 years with her now dead parents with the blessing of the emperor and yet she doesn't have 1 friend in the country???). The next chapter up, she's traveling by herself (despite a couple who tried to get her a guard and warned her that they'd been set up by ruffians frequently in the area)when, of course, she's attacked. When the dragon/samuri kills them (after she prays for someone to save her) she chides him for killing them and then just planning to leave them there and then becomes offended when he tries to pick her up and carry her to her pony since she's sprained her ankle. Now, if it were me and I'd just been attacked by men who said they were going to rape and then sell me to the whoremonger, I wouldn't be that upset if they died. but, that's just me. She continues to act in a similar stupid way through-out the book. I was sad, because the author could have had a truly unique story if she'd just written the heroine's character differently.

The last story takes place in the southwest. This was a contemporary story and while it wasn't bad...it wasn't good either. I kept expecting something different to what happened and honestly, it was a disapointment. And, the explaination was a bit of a confusing stretch. They're supposed to protect and hide a bright pink dragon living under her house and yet, everyone knows where she is???

Over all, I was disapointed by this anthology. For a book titled 'dragon lovers' there weren't too many lovers that were dragons-just people around dragons. They did try to put together stories with different types of dragons, which I applaud, but there just weren't enough good romances to make the book worth keeping. And, I have to admit, I felt slightly sick after finishing that first one and it tainted the others a bit. I problably should have waited a day or two before going on to the other stories. I'd get this one from the libarary if you can.

2 out of 5 stars Bland and Undeveloped.......2007-06-27

The short story can be a difficult artistic creation, and this book proves it. Writers that I've admired and read for years and two with whom I'm less familiar attempt short stories in the burgeoning genre of paranormal romance and, unfortunately, fail to create real dramatic tension or believable romantic dynamics. The closest thing to a memorable creation is the dragon from Barbara Samuel's "Dragon Feathers," which is at least more genuinely unique than the other stories. All of them, though, felt forced and contrived. Nothing in the plots truly flowed from character and situation, and the obstacles and villains never rose above the ho-hum. While I do prefer a spicier scene much of the time, the most regrettable part of these stories as romance was the contrived nature of each pairing. There was nothing that came across with depth. Perhaps I would have felt less offended with the half-baked nature of these stories if they had been offered in the standard paperback size and standard paperback pricing, but I paid premium trade paperback pricing for sub-par storytelling. I should have taken the Publisher's Weekly review more seriously. These stories honestly are frothy bits of gooey candy, not the well-crafted fiction writing that forms the backbone of recent paranormal genre-blending.

If you're looking for a more substantial story involving romance and dragons, consider Shanna Abe's The Smoke Thief and The Dream Thief, two relatively short novels with real tension, character-driven decisions and stories that mingle adventure and romance with the subject of dragons, each element contributing an integral share of the story.

Step inside the pages of DRAGON LOVERS to find worlds where dragons still live and fantasy reigns supreme....

Jo Beverly opens up this anthology with "The Dragon and the Virgin Princess". Princess Rozlinda has been trained to be the Sacrificial Virgin Princes (SVP) all her life. She is thrilled that her time as the SVP is about to come to an end, when the dragon arrives one year early. A mysterious man intervenes and all that Rozlinda knows is about to change.

"The Dragon and the Virgin Princess" is one highly amusing story! Rozlinda is a strong female character and her willingness to take on what she sees as her SVP obligations is commendable. Jo Beverly demonstrates that a female character can be empowered even when in a rather traditional role. Seesee, the dragon, definitely steals the show as she adds a unique flavor to Ms. Beverly's tale. "The Dragon and the Virgin Princess" was definitely the highlight of DRAGON LOVERS for this reviewer, as the humor interspersed with a unique perspective on cultural diversity made this an interesting and unforgettable romantic tale.

"The Dragon and the Dark Knight" by Mary Jo Putney is a charming tale that hearkens back to the more traditional romance. Sir Kenrick of Rathbourne intends to slay the dragon menacing the people under the jurisdiction of Lord William of Penruth. Things go awry, and Kenrick finds himself under the care of Ariane. Will love conquer all for Kenrick and Ariane?

Mary Jo Putney definitely knows how to write a powerful romance! The romance between Kenrick and Ariane is sweetly sensual as each accepts the other despite their supposed flaws. The surprising twist by Ms. Putney adds just the right amount of punch needed to spice this tale up. "The Dragon and the Dark Knight" is an entertaining and fun read.

"Anna and the King of Dragons" by Karen Harbaugh adds a bit of international flavor with a setting of Japan in the 1600s. Dutch native Anna Vanderzee finds herself alone and basically penniless in Japan after the sudden death of her parents. A chance encounter with a dragon changes everything when he saves her life. Anna agrees to provide the dragon with her father's scholarly books in exchange and thus sets an entirely new course for her life.

Karen Harbaugh immerses the reader into the culture of Japan in the 1600s. Anna's adherence to the dictates of the Japanese culture is enlightening, but it is her willingness and determination to keep her promises that make her such an admirable character. I particularly enjoyed the character of samurai Nakagawa Toshiro as his sense of honor and duty provided a unique flair to the story. "Anna and the King of Dragons" is perhaps one of the more unusual tales in DRAGON LOVERS.

Barbara Samuels concludes DRAGON LOVERS with her tale entitled "Dragon Feathers". Penny Freeman is ecstatic over her opportunity to study with the famous weaver in Santa Fe. The move is a refreshing change after the loss of her husband last year. But something is odd about the house she has purchased.... And just what is up with all of the feathers?

What an incredibly beautiful story! Barbara Samuels paints such vivid images that one can easily envision each scene as it unfolds. The twists and turns were wonderfully done as Ms. Samuels provides some interesting surprises. Joaquin's role emerges as the story progresses. However, it is Penny herself who makes this tale work as she has one of the more unusual roles in the anthology. "Dragon Feathers" is a stunning tale!

DRAGON LOVERS will relish this offering from four very talented authors. Each author provides the reader with a different perspective on dragons. The range in styles and settings ensure that most readers will find something to appeal to their tastes. DRAGON LOVERS is a worthy addition to my keeper shelf!

5 out of 5 stars Great anthology.......2007-06-08

I really enjoyed all the stories in this anthology. My favorite was "Anna and the King of Dragons" by Karen Harbaugh--I really liked the setting in the Japan of samurai and shoguns. Coming in a close second was "The Dragon and the Virgin Princess" by Jo Beverly. I enjoyed the other 2 stories by Mary Jo Putney and Barbara Samuel, but not enough to reread them.

3 out of 5 stars Midnight Lover Book 5 The Vampire Series.......2007-07-16

This book was very enjoyable. This is not a stand alone book and to get the most out of this book I do suggest that you read the previous books in the series.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best series yet.......2007-05-14

The series centers around vampires not just from one covenant but several. The are vampires that can walk around during the day, but need to walk on the soil of thier homeland, there are vampires that can eat and drink, but need to sleep during the day and many others. The depictive writing of the author is excellent and sets you right into the world of her dreams and inspirations.

4 out of 5 stars Fast paced paranormal romance.......2007-04-12

First I will say this is my first book by this author, and first romance book about vampires. I didn't read any of the other books in this series. This book was interesting, fast paced, and suspenseful. The author did a good job of brining all the details together and bringing closure to all situations by the end of the story. I thought the romance went REALLY fast (they were saying I Love You the same day they admitted there was chemistry between them) and the part of the ending that concerned Axel was over way too quick with very little fight. I was expecting more struggle than that. Overall it was an enjoyable read, and interesting because I have never read a vampire book before.

5 out of 5 stars Another wickedly funny and hot vampire tale.......2007-03-20

Midnight Lover is another spell binding tale of vampires by Rosemary Laurey.

Vampire Toby Wise is helping out a fellow Vampire Tom Kyd by looking over the books at Conner Inc. Plus he has hired a staff of well-trained nurses to care for owner Piet Connor father of Tom's mate Elizabeth.

Toby is happy and content with his life and ways so far but one of the caregivers has gotten under his skin in several ways. There is something about Laura Fox that draws Toby.

Laura Fox is thrilled to be working for Toby. He is a kind, caring boss. But Laura is working there under false pretenses. Her father wants her to get damaging information on Connor Inc. This is easier said then done. Laura is caught red handed one night by Toby. He doesn't fire her for snooping in his study but compels her to tell him the truth.

Toby and Laura together try to solve the strange goings on in town and the sudden change in her father. They grow close and their chemistry is sizzling. But how will Laura react when she finds out the truth about Toby and his friends.

Rosemary Laurey's Vamps are delicious. This story is well told and compelling. The added treat of getting to revisit with past characters is delightful. Can't wait to sink my teeth into another story.

5 out of 5 stars bitingly good vampire romantic thriller.......2007-03-11

Vampire Toby Wise, a runaway slave who escaped to England and was turned when he was twenty-six, is now living in Oregon trying to solve a multitude of problems. As a favor to the ghoul Elizabeth, he is watching over her father whose mind was destroyed when a vampire held him in thrall. He is also watching over Lizzie's company Connor Inc. which the FBI are investigating for money laundering because the vampire Lizzie destroyed took control of her of father's business as well.

Lizzie's step-mother Adela calls Toby for help and when he arrives in Dark Falls, he finds a deputy who wants to arrest her for being a witch. She also tells him that a chupacabra, a monster thought to be a myth, is running loose and the townsfolk think it is Adela's familiar. He takes Adele back to his home where he finds his employee Laura Fox rifling through his files. She is doing it for her father after begging her to get some information on Connor Inc. He is in thrall to Axel who is kin to the vampire Lizzie destroyed. Axel wants to know what happened to him and he doesn't care who has to use or kill to get the information he wants. Toby and Laura, who are falling in love with each other, are in the middle of the action and she is in the most danger because she is mortal and everyone going after theis a vampire, ghoul or a witch.

Toby has been a minor character in Rosemary Laurey's previous vampire books but in MIDNIGHT LOVER he gets to play center stage as he deals with a myriad of supernatural predators yet is not afraid to fall in love with a mortal. His beloved human is believable (adding a sense of authenticity to the plot) as she slowly accepts the existence of creatures of the night. This is a thoroughly delicious and bitingly good vampire romantic thriller.

2 out of 5 stars Ehh..........2007-07-30

I craved for a fantasy read and stumbled onto Piers Anthony (my first time reading him) and who could turn down a book titled Zombie Lover? Our 15-year-old, black wave hero Breanna takes the reader on a tour of Xanth (and other worlds) as she runs from a zombie king in a Snow White kissed awake tale gone wrong. Along the way she picks up many delightful characters and intrigue continues. I was a bit turned off as Anthony insists on explaining all of his puns to the reader and the end of the book was rather predictable (i.e. I mostly skimmed the last 40-pages or so). I was really turned off at the never ending smorgasbord of [...] and bottoms and poorly done sexual quips. In addition, half of my love for fantasy tends to be the cover art and I was hugely disappointed that Breanna was depicted as a slightly tan white girl rather than the black girl she's described as in the story. Additionally, Anthony's commentary on race seemed very superficial and uninformed. Overall it was a fun "bad" read but one I definitely had political problems with.

When I read any of the books from the xanth series I forget to sleep I just stay up and read till it is done I love these books I just finished this one for the 2nd time different style then most of his previous books but still a great one to read! Read em all you will love them!

5 out of 5 stars Just when you thought it couldn't get any better in Xanth.......2002-10-11

Now look, I know Piers Anthony is a great author. I've read his Incarnation of Immortality series, all the Xanth books, the Mode books, and the Apprentice Adept series. But this, I have to say, is the best of the bunch. What do you get when you cross a young black Mundane with a magical talent, a 130 year old man who was transformed into a tree, three kings, and a mess of zombies? Believe it or not, one of the best surprises to come into Xanth in years, thanks to the devious plotting of Good Magician Humphrey, Clio the Muse, and everybody's favorite elf, Jenny of the World of Two Moons. For all of us raised on fairy tales, this one beats them all.

4 out of 5 stars Good bookýif you haven't read the others in the series........2001-12-22

I enjoyed this book, and even bought it instead of borrowing from the library. But for a faithful Xanth fan, it is a little disappointing. The earlier books were gems. The middle ones were fun. But lately the quality of the plot (not the writing) has gone down. There is still hope for Xanth, though; I read a few Tamora Pierce books like Wolf Speaker and The Woman Who Rides Like A Man which didn't live up to my expectations of her, then WHAM! she retaliates with Emperor Mage and Lioness Rampant. Don't despair, friends: Xanth is not lost forever! In the meantime, check out Tamora Pierce and Gath Nix.

1 out of 5 stars Enough with the Adult Conspiracy!.......2001-07-25

The Xanth series is what got me reading sci-fi and fantasy novels. Its a shame this series has turned into unreadable mush.

Zombie Lover was the last book I've bought in this series and I don't think I'll continue with it. I can't take in anymore stories of adolescents thinking about who they want or don't want to have sex with.
