One of the most influential vampire novels of the 20th century, I Am Legend regularly appears on the "10 Best" lists of numerous critical studies of the horror genre. As Richard Matheson's third novel, it was first marketed as science fiction (for although written in 1954, the story takes place in a future 1976). A terrible plague has decimated the world, and those who were unfortunate enough to survive have been transformed into blood-thirsty creatures of the night. Except, that is, for Robert Neville. He alone appears to be immune to this disease, but the grim irony is that now he is the outsider. He is the legendary monster who must be destroyed because he is different from everyone else. Employing a stark, almost documentary style, Richard Matheson was one of the first writers to convince us that the undead can lurk in a local supermarket freezer as well as a remote Gothic castle. His influence on a generation of bestselling authors--including Stephen King and Dean Koontz--who first read him in their youth is, well, legendary. --Stanley Wiater

Every other man, woman, and child on Earth has become a vampire, and they are all hungry for Neville's blood.By day, he is the hunter, stalking the sleeping undead through the abandoned ruins of civilization. By night, he barricades himself in his home and prays for dawn. How long can one man survive in a world of vampires?

Book was great.......2007-10-10
I liked how he was basically trapped in his house and how he adapted to at has happened to the world. And my favorite part was when he told of the peek hole to watch the vampires outside. And the lude acts the women vampires would do cause they knew he was watching.
Much more than a Vampire Book.......2006-12-29
This is really a gem of a short story - on par with really the best of American fiction. While it uses horror conventions and mythos as the props, on a deeper level the story is a seering examination of isolation, loss, and, perhaps most interesting, the way in which the perspective of object-subject impacts ethics and norms.
Frankly I think a movie CAN'T be successfully made of this book - it is written in the first person and it relies on the thoughts of the narrator to drive its plot forward.
One of the best "vampire" novels ever.......2006-11-15
Being such an avid reader of "horror" and "suspense" stories I am pretty much open to reading anything that falls within the abovementioned categories. However, I usually distance myself from stories about, or centering around, vampires. Why? Well, it seems that more often than not vampire novels are usually cheesy, gothic melodramas that turn the character of the vampire from something sinister into something romantic. I'm not sure if they're all like that but in my experience that seems to be the case.
However with "I Am Legend", Richard Matheson managed to take the formula of the vampire story and turn it into something different and enjoyable. The story centers around Robert Neville, the LAST man on an earth that is overrun by vampires. Now I don't know about you but the very idea of being the last human being on earth is a terrifying thought in and of itself. I think what I like most about "I Am Legend" is that it centers less on a guy killing vampires and more on a guy doing the best he can to live from day to day. Isolation, depression, happiness, desire and pretty much every other emotion that a human being can experience is touched upon in this book. You don't have to be a die hard horror fan to enjoy "I Am Legend", just someone who appreciates a great story.
Horror with bonus Classic Short Story.......2006-11-11
The title story is amazing - shocking how contemporary his writing is considerign our view of the 50s and the horror is both types: action-packed and psychological. But the real gem is in the bonus short stories: "PREY". Anyone who has seen the movie "Trilogy of Terror" with Karen Black will never forget the terrifying Zuni Devil Doll! This is THAT short story - it and the other bonus ones are phenomenal.
Original and thought-proking.......2006-11-10
This is a book that is supposedly about vampires, but in fact it really ends up being about normality and stereotypes. If you are interested in a book that turns normal genre roles on their head this will not disappoint. I am not much interested in vampire nonsense but this was so highly recommended by a friend I had to read it and it justified the praise. Interestingly enough it also deals with the question of boredom: What would you do if you had all the time in the world and no one to talk to? The extra stories at the end are quite short and look more like aborted attempts at novels, skim read over them, one or two are worth a read. However, the main feature deserves the reputation it has.

Customer Reviews:
Tragic story about lonliness.......2007-10-14
On the surface, this story is a survival horror book about vampires. But if you peel back the layers, it is really about the a human's natural instincts. The will to survive, the fear of being alone and to crave companionship, as well as the thirst for knowledge and understanding. These are the things that appealed to me about the protagonist Robert Neville. The fact that he seemed too real to me. A fact that I'm sure the author Richard Matheson strived for, and it shows.
The premise is a virus of somekind has spread throughout the world and Neville is the only living creature to be unaffected to his knowledge. The rest of society have become bloodsucking vampires. Neville lives his life by the routine of killing them during the day with wooden stakes while they sleep and then avoiding them at night in his vampire proof house. For being as resourceful and smart as Neville is, one major thing that bothered me was how long it took him to realize that sunlight kills the vampires. I just didn't buy that.
Being adapted from a novel, there is a LOT of text. The illustrations are a nice touch, but not always necessary. Sometimes I wondered how much had been but out from the original to make room for the visuals. It could have used some color but that's not really a complaint.
There's really not an amazing story here. In fact, I wished it had been longer because by the end, I wanted more. It seemed like it ended too abruptly and without exploring the world around him enough. There are some genuienly heart wrenching moments and I was hoping for more of those, but then it just ends, seemingly without closure, but you'll just have to decide for yourself.
Certainly worth checking out if you like the novel.......2006-05-28
Not too much to say here.
As others have mentioned, this is perhaps more of an illustrated novel than a comic book, as it frequently has very long blocks of text to go with only a few panels. Perhaps even more significant, all of the actual language, or at the very least almost all of it, is lifted directly from the novel. Stuff is cut out, of course, but nothing is added in, as far as I can tell. Needless to say, this makes it incredibly faithful to the source material, and though it is sometimes condensed somewhat, nothing at all is really cut out. This can cause some concerns, as parts of the book just don't take to being shown this way, particularly the portions regarding Neville's research. Again, as others have mentioned, much of this amounts to little more than him sitting around and thinking or looking through a microscope, which naturally means that there isn't all that much to look at. On the other hand, most of the novel *does* take well to this format, and the artwork itself is generally excellent. Actually, I'm not in love with how the actual humans look, but the vampiries look terrific, and they matter more anyway. Furthermore, Matheson's sort of flatly, simply poetic language is generally very well suited for this sort of format, and they have wisely kept in almost all of the best lines.
Anyway, this is an very interesting adaptation, and any fan of the novel ought to check this out if they have any interest in comics at all. It's certainly not necessary for you to have read the novel to get this as it is, again, pretty much all here, but I figure that anyone who's actually looking at this has almost certainly read the novel, so that's who I need to address.
Well paced.......2006-03-03
A different take on the vampire story. The artwork and story worked well together, and it really makes the reader feel the protagonist's depression, and the almost claustrophobic feeling when the vampires are out at night. Excellent read!
More of an "Illustrated novel" than a "Graphic novel".......2006-01-11
A nice try from the creators, but it relies far too much on extremely long text passages to tell the story. Very faithful to the original, as others have noted, but in the end, it's just too many drawings of Neville just sitting in a chair while the text tells the story.
Excellent adaptation of an excellent novel.......2005-01-31
great artwork. people who have read the novel won't find anything new it's basically a word for wrod adaptation but that's not a bad thing. it's cool to see pictures put to the images you've already made in your head.

LEGENDARY SCI-FI NOVEL..........2005-11-05
What would you do, if a mysterious plague swept throughout the world, literally killing everyone off, but leaving in its place something new, something frightening, something downright horrible, while leaving you alive, immune and seemingly alone? What would you do, if the undead now walked the earth looking for you, the last man alive...the last vestige of the human race? What if what they wanted was the taste of your blood on their lips? Just what on earth would you do?
These are the questions that faced Robert Neville. It is he who is Legend. How he answers them is what makes this a book to remember and a classic within its genre. It is a book of profound hope and despair. It is a book which demands to be read. Read it. You will not be disappointed.

Customer Reviews:
Brilliant!.......2006-11-02
An enchanted retelling of the life of Morgan Le Fay. Nancy Springer did such a great job in writing this book. I felt all Morgan was feeling and you can no longer view her as a villian after reading this book. Her [the author] view on Avalon was refreshing and original as well. Overall, a bloody fantastic read!
Medival Morgan.......2006-09-20
In the medieval ages kings and queens ruled the land. Morgan was the daughter of the Duke of Cornwall and Igraine the beautiful. Morgan lived in a castle with her mother, sister, and her nurse. Her father was often at war. Morgan loves her family, but one day when she is sitting in a wheel shaped rock at the top of a hill all of a sudden she finds an extraordinary blue stone in her palm. She realizes that she had been digging into the ground. She hears a voice calling for her, a boy named Thomas. The boy claims that her mother needs to speak with her, but Morgan just wants to be left alone so se is uncooperative. Soon Morgan finds out that her father has died and her mother is to marry Uther Penndragon a rich but evil king. Her mother is devastated and as of now Morgan is in line for the throne, but many cruel and greedy people are out to steal the throne from her. So her, her sister, and her nurse who is not who Morgan thought she was move into the nurse's home. After meeting a few times Morgan has grown to enjoy Thomas' company and he is in some trouble so he stays with them too until he has to go off and fight. Morgan and her sister are called to Uther Penndragon's court for the naming of their new half brother Aurther. Morgan despises Aurther not only because he stole the crown from her but for stealing her mother's love and attention. But several years later when Aurther is kidnapped and Igraine disappears Morgan is drawn to an unknown land and is sent on a quest. On the way Morgan has many surprises thrust upon her that are strange and unexpected, but still she is being summoned to the unknown. Once Morgan gets there she is reunited with someone she hasn't seen in years. I strongly recommend this story because of its unexpected plot and because it is one of the most intriguing books I have ever read and putting it down is nearly impossible once you have started reading it.
Spellbounding.......2006-09-19
Seriously, I have no idea where to begin. I've read this book about four times now, and each time, I ended up getting so caught up in the book, that I felt I was the character. I felt Morgan's love for Thomas and Ongwynn. I felt her hatred for her half brother, Arthur. I felt all of her confusion, sadness, happiness, and wonder.
It's a very well written book. If you don't love fantasy and the legends of Camelot, this may not be your book. But if you absolutly love Camelot and fantasy, this is an amazing read.
I Have a New Role Model.......2006-03-10
Ok, so the things Morgan was able to do were a little inhuman, but she was still a really awesome woman. She reminds me of myself, very independent. The story of Morgan le Fay is a dark tale about a girl who becomes fate herself. After her father, the king, is killed, her mother is the most sought after woman in the country. The country is driven into war over the throne and many wish to get Morgan out of the way. With a powerful druid stone she is able to perform magic. She falls in love with Sir Thomas only to see him die a terrible death. Morgan goes through some excruciatingly painful times in this book. The road she must travel in live is very rocky indeed. Perhaps the tragedy of this tale is what attracts me to it. It does not have a happy ending at all, but sometimes that is how life goes. It is extremely well written by author Nancy Springer. I Am Morgan le Fay actually won the Edgar Allen Poe Award. I have to say that this is one of my favorite, if not me FAVORITE book of all time. I am almost addicted to it. I plan on reading it again as soon as I get a chance. I recommend this book to a teen, females audience simply because the main character is female and young. But I wouldn't limit it to females, I think there are some males out there who would enjoy it to. If you're looking for a good read, this is your book.
A bit childish...........2005-05-04
I am 16 and in love with all Arthurian literature. As I was reading Nancy Springer's "I Am Morgan Le Fay", I got extremely bored. It was so juvenile. Her relationship with Thomas was just odd. It completely destroyed the legend. If you really, and I mean really want to read a great book about Arthurian literature, I can recommend some for you. Obviously, Marion Zimmer Bradley's masterpiece, "The Mists of Avalon" is one of them. Here are some others.
**Queen of Camelot ~ Nancy Mckenzie
**the Guinevere series ~ Persia Woolley
**yet another Guinevere series ~ Sharan Newman
**In Camelot's Shadow ~ Sarah Zettel
**For Camelot's Honor ~ Sarah Zettel
**Prince of Dreams ~ Nancy Mckenzie
**Grail Prince ~ Nancy Mckenzie
**Sword of the Rightful King ~ Jane Yolen
**The Romance of Tristan ~ Beroul

Book Description
Clad in flowing linen robes, adorned with jewels, pampered by servants, Heb-Nefert led a life of leisure and joy with her royal husband on the banks of the Nile. Now she lies, a mummy, encased in glass in a museum, and recalls the days of long ago. “A mummy’s moving soliloquy on youth, love and the fleeting nature of life is the centerpiece of this hauntingly beautiful picture book.”--Publishers Weekly

Looking Back.......2000-01-28
This is a beautiful and poignant remembrance of a woman who lived many years ago, looking back on her past as an egypitian queen as she lies on display in a museum. A really fantastic children's book with gorgeous illustrations.
Why do Kids love this stuff?.......2000-01-06
My 4 year old pulled this off the library shelf, I worried it might be scary but he loved it. His fist Mummy book of now many. Kids are just fansinated with this kind of thing. It is creepy but they take it so matter of factly that it doesn't bother them. I thought the poetry was magical.
not for children.......1999-11-27
I can't easily picture a kid who would appreciate even a quarter of all the subtlety packed into this thin book, and I'm not sure I'd want to meet a kid who did. But Oh! For adults, what a haunting, utterly unforgettable treat! This is a book full of color and joy, and yet it's one of the single saddest books I've read in English - and the entire spectrum presented with no fanfare or folderol whatsoever. When you read it out loud - and I feel pretty sure you will - be sure to pause a little extra for the last page.
A new twist on an old mummy!.......1998-10-01
Shows the fascination we have with the ancient through magical watercolor illustrations. Interesting story line, reminding us that each one from the past has a history, a mom and a dad and things they loved.

Classic Myths to Read Aloud: The Great Stories of Greek and Roman Mythology, Specially Arranged for Children Five and Up by an Educational Expert
ASIN: 0374335257 |
Book Description
Short, snappy, and accessible
In this singular collection, the heroes and heroines of fifteen Greek and Roman tales give their own dramatic, first-person accounts of events. From the magnificent spinner Arachne, who learns that a mortal should never challenge a god, to the god Pan, who prefers Earth to Mount Olympus, to the beautiful, self-indulgent Pandora and the gold-stricken Midas -- the reader becomes a confidant to the tellers of these sometimes humorous, sometimes sad, always engaging tales of wonder, woe, romantic love, and jealousy.
Mordicai Gerstein's energetic, whimsical illustrations combine with Elizabeth Spires' playful renditions for a totally fresh take on familiar and not-so-familiar myths.
Customer Reviews:
Myths for middle graders drolly told........2002-05-18
This small book would serve nicely as an introduction to classical mythology for the middle grades and interested adults as well. Spires' tone as she retells the tales of not only Arachne, but of Pandora, Orpheus and Eurydice, Sisyphus, Endymion and others as well, is just wry and arch enough to be quite delightful and so appealing. This is captured very well in Gerstein's simple and almost cartoonish illustrations. It's just so fun to hear Eurydice saying "I was married to Orpheus for about fifteen minutes when I was bitten by a poisonous snake and brought down to the underworld. So much for my happiness." Spires' characterizations of these well-known archetypes are always on the mark. The cast of characters list at the end of the book is also useful, if not essential, and also set in a droll prose. The work well fills the gap between the D'Aulaires' classic Book of Greek Myths and the more adult By Jove! Brush Up Your Mythology by Michael Macrone and the also wonderful and more recent Friendly Guide to Mythology by Nancy Hathaway. Entertaining and painlessly edifying, all.

Robert Neville is the last surviving human on earth, but he is not alone. An apocalyptic plague has infected every man, woman and child, changing them into blood-crazed, rampaging vampiresand they're all out for his blood. A hunter by day, he hides away in his house at night, determined to survive their attacks. But a new strain of vampire is evolving, committed to creating a new world, and to them, Neville is every bit as frightening as they are to him. Inspired by Dracula, Matheson turned the traditional vampire legend on its head, attempting to explain undead phenomena by scientific means, and making I Am Legend a moving treatise on loneliness and conformity.

I Am Legend-Hell House.......2007-02-07
Fast paced. I couldn't put I Am Legend down. Hell House is my favorite haunted house story. It is not appropriate for young adults, or children. Both stories far outshine the movies based on them, and the movies are great for that era.

King Arthur has fascinated young people for centuries, and since fantasy literature has become a passion for so many bright teens, a whole body of writing has developed that reimagines Arthurian stories in ways that make them psychologically relevant today--without losing the magical resonance of Camelot. In I Am Mordred, Nancy Springer, known both for her fantasy writing and the realistic novel Toughing It, brings the central father-son conflict of the Arthurian saga vividly alive. Teen fantasy fans will be familiar with the background events: the young King Arthur, unaware, bedded his half sister Morgause and conceived the child Mordred, who according to the wizard Merlin, was fated to destroy his father and the kingdom. Goaded by Merlin, Arthur attempted to have the baby killed, but was foiled by the intervention of the good sorceress Nyneve and the evil sorceress Morgan le Fay. Years later Mordred arrives at Camelot and becomes a knight of the Round Table. Springer focuses on Mordred at age 15, as he struggles against his destined fate of killing the king and father he both loves and hates. In an adventure story festooned with the golden bells of enchantment, Mordred undertakes a quest in the Forest Perilous to save Arthur's life and his own soul, but ultimately fails. Springer brings the story to a moving and ingenious conclusion in which the prophecy is fulfilled--and simultaneously overcome. (Ages 12 and older) --Patty Campbell
Book Description
What will a person give to forsake his destiny? From his very incarnation, Mordred has been a pawn in Camelot's history. Foretold by Merlin that he will grow up to kill his father, the beloved King Arthur, young Mordred struggles with his fate, loathing the great king who tried to kill him as a baby, yet journeying to Camelot where he learns to serve and idolize the legendary leader. Torn between feelings of love and hate, Mordred yearns to make peace with Arthur, who still refuses to acknowledge him. But Mordred is determined to have peace at any price--even if it costs him his soul. In I Am Mordred, one of the most fascinating and misunderstood heroes of Arthurian lore comes to life in an epic fantasy for Camelot fans. Nancy Springer lives in Dallastown, PA.

I am Mordred.......2007-10-18
Interesting to have a story of just Mordred and why he became what he became...
Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Nancy Springer's novel presents Mordred in a more sympathetic light,
delving into why he is who he is, and did what he did. In a similar
manner to Mary Stewart's Crystal Cave, it starts with him as a
teenager, after having survived a purge meant to kill him as a baby.
A bit of a geeky boy, he returns to Camelot to try and come to an
understanding with his father, and a reverse Lex Luthor/Superman type
of problem continues to get in the way.
Very well done.
Gripping, Unfortunately.......2006-03-28
It had seemed like a good book when I had started reading it, but, no, it wasn't, and for a lot of different reasons. The first (and probably the most annoying) is the way the author sets this character up: in a good story, you'd want to make your audience sad when they die. When Mordred died, I was very happy. When Arthur lived, I was disappointed. When Mordred didn't die, I wondered what the point of the story was. To make everyone hate Mordred? Um, that's already happened, Miss Springer. The second, is its details, which were not only boring, but pointless. The third, is that I couldn't stop reading it. Really, I wanted to rush this over to the nearest recycling center, but the book won't relieve you of its awfulness. If ever you concider this book, DON'T READ IT! I'd never read a bad book until I read I AM MORDRED.
A depressing but well described story.......2006-02-15
I will start by saying that if you want a book to put you in a good mood but are not looking for something with the best writing do not read this. This book is a very depressing story. It may have a sad story but in that story is incredible decription. This story will right away put you in a sad mood and you will feel bad for the main character in this book.
It starts when a young boy by the name of Mordred is almost killed by his dad, King Aurthor. He is saved by two peasants who raise him as their own son. He gets taken away from them and taken to a castle where nobody really cares about him.
This is just one of the many things that happens to this poor, little boy Mordred. So if you are looking for a serious, well written book make sure to read this.
Good, but it could have been better. .......2006-02-12
I became fascinated by Mordred after reading 'The Winter Prince' by Elizabeth Wein (a book I heartily recommend), and have been reading every book about him that I can get my hands on. 'I Am Mordred' came across as OK when compared to those other books, but it wasn't great.
This book is about victims. Mordred is portrayed as a confused, innocent teen who fights half-heartedly against his fate. Women are also portrayed as victims. Not just some women, but all women. This annoyed me. 'Poor Mordred,' Nancy Springer seems to say. 'Poor, poor women.'
It is my opinion that Nancy Springer was fighting too hard to get us to like Mordred. He could do no wrong. I think I would have liked to read about a more bitter, less confused Mordred, who truly tried to fight against the prophecy made about him. Nancy Springer could have written about someone who was not perfect, but still likable. I would have sympathized more with someone who showed initiative, even if he turned out to be a victim anyway.
I did like the portrayal of King Arthur, and the book was well-written, and even moving, though it was simplistic in its own little way, with Good!Mordred, Brutish!Men and Poor!Women. There were a few Medieval Urban Legends thrown into the mix as well, but otherwise, the Arthurian world is described nicely.
The ending was satisfying and convincing, and probably saved the book. All in all, I give it three stars. It's not long, and it's quite interesting.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book for young readers!.......2002-10-29
A few weeks ago, I gave my son the 'I Am a Droid' storybook, and he loved it. I decided to give him the 'I Am a Pilot' book this week and of course, it was a huge hit.
This book also, is a short picture book which contains live action screen shots from Phantom Menace. Narrated by Anakin, this book contains descriptions and information about many of the flying ships used throughout the Episode 1 film. My son especially likes the pages about Pod Racers.
Unlike 'I Am a Droid', this book doesn't have any stickers, which was somewhat of a disappointment for my son. His first question was, "This book doesn't have stickers?" But his disappointment was short lived, because this book is especially engaging for a child of four.
Again, great book! I have also ordered the Jar Jar Binks book in this series, and that book has stickers. Can't wait to give that book to my son, he will be so excited.
Definitely a recommended title.
Anakin sure knows his ships.......2001-06-22
The book is excellent for learning the names of all the podracers, the styles of their podracers as well as Anakin's personal favorites regarding ships he finds "cool."

I AM LEGEND...A LEGEND IN ITS OWN TIME..........2005-10-30
