Roy Eberhardt is the new kid--again. This time around it's Trace Middle School in humid Coconut Grove, Florida. But it's still the same old routine: table by himself at lunch, no real friends, and thick-headed bullies like Dana Matherson pushing him around. But if it wasn't for Dana Matherson mashing his face against the school bus window that one day, he might never have seen the tow-headed running boy. And if he had never seen the running boy, he might never have met tall, tough, bully-beating Beatrice. And if he had never met Beatrice, he might never have discovered the burrowing owls living in the lot on the corner of East Oriole Avenue. And if he had never discovered the owls, he probably would have missed out on the adventure of a lifetime. Apparently, bullies do serve a greater purpose in the scope of the universe. Because if it wasn't for Dana Matherson...
In his first novel for a younger audience, Carl Hiaasen (Basket Case, etc.) plunges readers right into the middle of an ecological mystery, made up of endangered miniature owls, the Mother Paula's All-American Pancake House scheduled to be built over their burrows, and the owls' unlikely allies--three middle school kids determined to beat the screwed-up adult system. Hiaasen's tongue is firmly in cheek as he successfully cuts his slapstick sense of humor down to kid-size. Sure to be a hoot, er, hit with middle school mystery fans. (Ages 10 to 15) --Jennifer Hubert
Book Description
Unfortunately, Roy’s first acquaintance in Florida is Dana Matherson, a well-known bully. Then again, if Dana hadn’t been sinking his thumbs into Roy’s temples and mashing his face against the school-bus window, Roy might never have spotted the running boy. And the running boy is intriguing: he was running away from the school bus, carried no books, and–here’s the odd part–wore no shoes. Sensing a mystery, Roy sets himself on the boy’s trail. The chase introduces him to potty-trained alligators, a fake-fart champion, some burrowing owls, a renegade eco-avenger, and several extremely poisonous snakes with unnaturally sparkling tails.
Roy has most definitely arrived in Carl Hiaasen’s Florida.

Owls Rock!.......2007-07-23
I loved this book! It was about kids saving endangered owls and I love wildlife and nature. The characters were interesting and funny; sometimes sarcastic, except for Roy. The plot was interesting and well-developed. I learned a little bit about Florida which I did not know before. This book made me want to visit Florida and it made me want to save endangered animals. It made me realize that kids can save endangered animals and make a difference in the world. I highly recommend this book; I think most kids would love this book.
so far.......2007-07-14
I've read three books this summer. My grandmother is paying me a dollar for every book I read so I'm not bragging. The first two weren't like work at all, but this one almost is. I thought it would be more adventerous. That's the kind of book I really like. For everybody who likes more adventer, adventuer / \ excitment, I think they should read The Misadventures of Maude March, and if they are a boy, they will like The Voyage of the Frog.
An Inspiring Book.......2007-06-04
I have recently read the book Hoot by Carl Hiaasen. Have you ever felt left out, or have you felt like your not where you're supposed to be? This is how Roy Eberhardt, a teenage boy from Montana, feels after moving to Florida. Roy investigates a mystery of the boy running with no shoes on, while he tries to save an owl species. Will life in Florida be looking up for Roy?
The theme or lesson of this book I think was to not let things get in your way. Hoot was very inspiring and it makes you want to help animals in your community. Also, you can literally feel yourself as if you were a character in the setting. I'd advise you to read Hoot because I know you'll love it.
A great book but I liked the Tommytown series better.......2007-06-01
I thought this was a great book, but not as good as the Tommytown series. In Tommytown the boys 11 -14 and the girl, Karen 14 years old acted more like their age and the scenes where funny and exciting. But both writers are super! Take a look at Tommytown and The Boys From Tommytown , (I actually did it. I inserted the titles) Anyway you won't be sorry.

I thought that this book by Carl Hiaasen was great! This was a very inspirational book about a boy named Roy who moves to Coconut Cove, Florida. He faces many problems like a bully named Dana Matherson, and he meets a girl Beatrice, and her mal treated step- brother. Together the kids try to save mini owls who were going to get hurt, or killed by a building company that was building a new Mother Paula's Pancake House. I would reccomend this book to any one, but especially animal lovers. It is a great novel just like Carl Hiaasens other novels.

Customer Reviews:
Silver John Is A Guitar Man Just Like Me!!!.......2005-11-13
This book introduces the reader once again to Silver John , the balladeer guitarist . Silver John encounters many strange things in his life as a travelling guitar man including a train which runs when there are no tracks. One of Silver John's many gifts seems to be that of 'Excorcist" as he vanquishes evil, ghosties and ghoulies into the night. This is an excellent compilation from a very talented writer.
Outstanding fantasy/horror with a regional twist.......2005-10-19
Silver John wanders the Appachalian Mountains with his guitar strung with silver strings in search of adventure and good songs. On the way, he finds various supernatural opponents and he vanquishes them. That's the story, but it is so much more than that the way Manly Wade Wellman tells it. This is writing of the highest order and stories actually based on mountain folk tales and superstitions. Please, I beg of you, read these stories. It's hard to describe, but Wellman's writing is just so wonderful and his characters so well drawn. This is GREAT stuff.
Appalachian Gothic Gold.......2004-09-08
Volume Five of John Pelen's THE SELECTED STORIES OF MANLY WADE WELLMAN rounds off the permanent edition of Wellman's short supernatural fiction with a complete collection of the popular Silver John the Balladeer tales originally published (mostly) in THE MAGAZINE OF FANTASY AND SCIENCE FICTION. These deliciously spooky and atmospheric mood pieces combine the rich flavor of authentic regional folklore with Wellman's sterling imagination and storytelling gifts. Wellman was John Pelen is owed a debt of gratitude for this five-volume collection which establishes Wellman, who was one of the best of the original WEIRD TALES writers, in the ranks of such luminaries as Robert Bloch, August Derleth, Robert E. Howard and H. P. Lovecraft. Now if only someone would collect Wellman's several Silver John novels in such attractive form ...
John's back, and he's still singing.......2004-03-25
This 5th volume of the series has the same contents as the paperback version of John the Balladeer, even including the introduction, so unlike the first four volumes it won't be new material to most of Wellman's fans. It is nice to see John's stories in a binding befitting their quality, though. (One tiny niggle: I sort of wish they'd used silver instead of gilt on the cover of this one.) The series in general is well done, nicely bound, and brings together a lot of material that is both worth reading and otherwise difficult to find.
John the Balladeer.......2003-05-12
An extraordinary collection of stories that is well worth reading. If you can find the long out of print paperback collection titled John the Balladeer, you'll find the same tales.
Each one is a tale where right and justice prevail or perhaps, more accurately, where evil rebounds upon the practioner thereof. "O Ugly Bird!" is perhaps the most famous and is certainly a wonderful introduction to Silver John. "Vandy,Vandy" is among my favorites (yes, children, US quarters were made of silver at one time). "On the Hills and Everywhere" is a grand and too long ignored Christmas story.
While somewhat dated, the hero of one story is a young college student just back from the Korean war, they're are all entertaining "backwoods yarns".

Hoot and Holler are two owl best friends who love to play games, but are never abe to say they love one another. When Hoot is lost in the woods, Holler worries he'll never have a chance to express his affection. Rimantas Rolia's drawings are unique and whimsical.

So funny it is scary!.......2002-11-19
Although chronologically I qualify as an adult, I enjoy most goods geared toward children with much glee. That held especially true with this book. This year was my daughters first Halloween. The two of us had such fun reading this book together. The rhymes made it easy to narrate in a sing songy fashion. That, coupled with the length of the writings, made this a perfect read for both of us. I didn't pack this book away with the rest of my Halloween decorations, it will remain out all year!

Halloween Hoots and Howls.......2000-03-27
Author and artist are perfectly matched in this brilliant collection of Halloween poems. The green-faced, blue-haired, grinning witch on the cover tempts adults and children alike to open the book, sample the witty epitaphs on the endpapers ("Here lies the body of Jeremy Victor. He shouldn't have hugged his boa constrictor. Sleep tight"), and chuckle their way through the book. All kinds of ghoulish creatures cavort their way through the pages, and the poems, a delicious mix of scary and funny, are winners.

"Dogs don't hoot. Pigs don't hoot. Horses don't hoot. Owls don't hoot." Wait a second! "Yes they do! Owls have swively necks and stay up all night, and they definitely hoot!"
In this marvelous sequel to Who Hops?, author-illustrator Katie Davis creates a game brimming with all kids' favorite qualities: animals, repetition, and silliness. Extra-bright and colorful animals fill each page, looking alternately bewildered, bemused, and miffed. Nothing tickles a toddler's funny bone so much as nonsense--toying with what they know to be true. Lions do roar, bees do buzz, and yaks do quack--hold it! No they don't! Ducks quack. Easily adapted for hours of play on road trips or in waiting room lines, and a good refresher on animal sounds, this witty book will appeal to adults as well, especially with the critters' little asides. ("I'll hoot when pigs fly!" says the pig. "Well, I could [buzz] if I wanted to," mutters the bull. "Quack? That's quazy!" smirks the worm.) Children will love the last page, in which they're all but begged to hoot, buzz, squeak, roar, and quack. Parents may want to avoid this noisy story at bedtime! (Ages 3 to 6) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
Dogs don't hoot. Pigs don't hoot. Horses don't hoot. Owls don't hoot. Owls don't hoot? YES THEY DO!
And so begins this funny follow-up to the popular Who Hops? An irresistible repetitive text and bold, bright images of animals combine in a book that is sure to have preschoolers hooting (and buzzing and quacking and roaring) loudly!

Anyone who reads this book! If you like Who Hops, you'll enjpy this book as well.
Cute book with bright and cheerful illustrations.......2001-06-02
This book turned out to be a pleasant surprise. I'm not impressed with all of the illustrations (some of the animals just don't look right) but the bright colors make up for it. For toddlers who love to say "no" this book is it. My 20 month old loves this book, especially at the end when all the children make all the noises. The book also explains some characteristics of the animals, which I found to be a nice. It's definately worth at least checking out of the library to see for yourself.

Agapanthus Hum is growing up, and she's finally lost her first tooth. But this is no ordinary lost tooth! Now her trademark humming has turned into a special sound that good little Daddy calls an angel hoot.
When Major Bark joins in howling, they take their show on the road to perform their "hoot-and-howl" act for the whole class, leaving everyone clapping and clamoring for lost teeth, too.
Agapanthus is whizzier and dizzier than ever in this irresistible book that will have its readers hooting and howling 'til the very end.

An EXCELLENT book to read aloud!.......2003-09-13
I just checked out this book at the library for my 3-year-old daughter, and both of us LOVE it! I've had to read this to my daughter 3 times already because she can't get enough of it! Cowley uses such wonderfully expressive and appropriate words to describe Agapanthus' movements and noises, which makes this book an excellent one for encouraging phonemic awareness in young listeners and soon-to-be readers! My little girl laughs uncontrollably from start to finish! Of course, it helps to read it with a lot of enthusiasm.
