Michael Baigent, Henry Lincoln, and Richard Leigh, authors of The Messianic Legacy, spent over 10 years on their own kind of quest for the Holy Grail, into the secretive history of early France. What they found, researched with the tenacity and attention to detail that befits any great quest, is a tangled and intricate story of politics and faith that reads like a mystery novel. It is the story of the Knights Templar, and a behind-the-scenes society called the Prieure de Sion, and its involvement in reinstating descendants of the Merovingian bloodline into political power. Why? The authors of Holy Blood, Holy Grail assert that their explorations into early history ultimately reveal that Jesus may not have died on the cross, but lived to marry and father children whose bloodline continues today. The authors' point here is not to compromise or to demean Jesus, but to offer another, more complete perspective of Jesus as God's incarnation in man. The power of this secret, which has been carefully guarded for hundreds of years, has sparked much controversy. For all the sensationalism and hoopla surrounding Holy Blood, Holy Grail and the alternate history that it outlines, the authors are careful to keep their perspective and sense of skepticism alive in its pages, explaining carefully and clearly how they came to draw such combustible conclusions. --Jodie Buller
Book Description
SPECIAL ILLUSTRATED EDITION WITH EXCLUSIVE NEW MATERIAL
“One of the more controversial books of the 20th century.” –UPI
“Enough to seriously challenge many traditional beliefs, if not alter them.” –Los Angeles Book Times Review
Explosive, thought-provoking, fiercely compelling, Holy Blood, Holy Grail breaks bold new ground with its shocking conclusions about the lineage of Christ and the legacy of the Holy Grail. Now this lavishly illustrated
collector’s edition features exclusive new material plus dozens of full-color photographs, drawings, symbols, architecture, and artwork, making it a dazzling feast for the eyes as well as the mind. Based on decades
of research, filled with eye-opening new
evidence and stunning scholarship, this authoritative work uncovers an alternate history as shocking as it is believable–as it dares to ask:
Is the traditional, accepted view of the life of Christ in some way incomplete?
Is it possible Christ did not die on the
cross?
Is it possible Jesus was married, a father,
and that his bloodline still exists?
Is it possible that parchments found in the
South of France a century ago reveal one
of the best-kept secrets in Christendom?
Is it possible that these parchments contain
the very heart of the mystery of the Holy
Grail?
According to the authors of this extraordinarily provocative, meticulously researched book, not only are these things possible–they are probably true. So revolutionary, so original, so convincing, the most faithful Christians will be moved; here is the book that has sparked worldwide controversy, now newly updated and beautifully illustrated for the collector’s shelf.
“Like Chariots of the Gods...The plot has all the elements of an international thriller.” –Newsweek
“Compelling.” –Philadelphia Inquirer
“An astonishing hypothesis.”
–Publishers Weekly

Fun Read but..........2007-10-12
History is interesting and exciting. We never know what to believe. That is why faith destroys us. faith in the blind. Jesus was an inspiring philosopher. no more. Who cares if he was married or had kids??? He was a man!!! and dont be an idiot thinking god had anything to do with mary becoming pregnant. common sense. if you believe that..might as well think david copperfield is the son of god. dont take my review that seriously. just planting seeds...and yes..off the book a tad! hahaha
This IS the original.......2007-09-23
This is where it all started for me... 10 years and over 140 books later this book is still the best and the one i refer back to as the information contained is excellent.
What a story, whether true, false, fiction or non, it grips you from page 1 to the very end in a mystery that is so compelling and has such wide reaching implications you simply can not put it down.
I only wish the 3 authors had produced more work together.

Denial cannot change fact............2007-09-03
.
....nor can frequent repetition create it.
There are some interesting facts presented here, and some even more interesting conclusions drawn from those facts.
And thus the fight begins.
Some of the most intriguing facts are those surrounding Rosslyn Chapel. Inside there are carvings of plants that were not "discovered" by Europeans until two-hundred years AFTER their carving.
This is great book on the Templars and one theory of their demise.
Or is it fact????
It's interesting....These doubters........2007-07-31
Alot of you are doing exactly what they said the critics have done, You can argue all you want about Prior and etc, But they will agree with me that the most important topic here is the gospels pertaining to Jesus, you must remember that they think the most interesting thing here is that there is a civilization of people who believe in Jesus because of what they have been told to believe by force or condition to believe since childhood(like me, being a preachers kid) But they have now questioned not what you believe but on what grounds do you believe. They didnt make up verses, They quoted what was in the bible the King James Version! Think about this! What is the mystery behind the "Two Mary's" is Mary of bethany and the Magdalen the same? well according to the bible THEY ARE! Is there contradictions concerning the resurrection in the gospels? Well according to the gospels THERE IS! Is there something odd about the way Jesus was tried & convicted by Rome's accord? If you read the gospels with a historic eye THERE IS! People pick up the bible and read it along with what they question and you will come out with the same conclusions.
Holy Moses.......2007-07-03
If you are a historian, this is the book for you.
If you do research, this is for you.
If you are doing leisurely reading, this is not for you.
This book requires concentration.
Book Description
The enigma: a discovery at Rennes-le-Château that offers little in the way of material wealth, but whose secret rocked the foundations of contemporary politics and the Christian faith. The players: the Knights Templar, the Cathar heretics of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries and a dynasty of obscure French kings deposed more than 1,300 years ago. The conclusion: as persuasive, controversial and explosive as it was when first published over twenty years ago.

Heavy reading, but an awesome book.......2007-03-19
Now this is a really heavy book, there is so much information its amazing!

A terrific exploration of an ancient religious mystery.......1997-02-13
Holy Blood, Holy Grail is a clever, thought-provoking book that will get your blood boiling if you're a Christian fundamentalist. The authors create a wonderful story by tying together some of the world's greatest religious mysteries (the historical Jesus, the Crusades, the Knights Templars, the Albigensian heretics, and Freemasonry). You'll have to decide for yourself the accuracy of their theory. In a nutshell, the authors argue that the Holy Grail was the bloodline of Jesus, descendant of King David, which was carried out of the holy land in the form of Jesus' wife, Mary Magdelene, and which survives today in the noble houses of European aristocracy. Don't scoff at this idea, because recent Dead Sea Scroll scholarship (see Barbara Thiering) lends credence to much of the story. Even if you don't believe the premise, you'll find this book hard to put down

Book Description
And the companion (Consort) was Mary of Magdala (Mary Magdalene). The Lord loved Mary more than all the other disciples and he kissed her often on her mouth (the text is missing here and the word ¿mouth¿ is assumed). The others saw his love for Mary and asked him: ¿Why do you love her more than all of us?¿ The Savior replied, ¿Why do I not love you in the same way I love her?¿ - (The Gospel of Philip) - Peter said to Mary; ¿Sister we know that the Savior loved you more than all other women. Tell us the words of the Savior that you remember and know, but we have not heard and do not know. Mary answered him and said; ¿I will tell you what He hid from you.¿ - (The Gospel of Mary Magdalene) - Seizing on the texts above, writers of both fiction and non-fiction allowed their pens to run freely amidst conjecture and postulation of marriage and children between Jesus and Mary Magdalene. The writers of The Da Vinci Code and Holy Blood, Holy Grail took these passages and expanded them into storylines that have held readers captive with anticipation. Did Jesus take Mary to be his wife? Could the couple have produced children? Gnostic theology leaves open the possibility.

Not worth paying for...........2006-08-17
I thought I was getting a book that explained each gospel. Instead I got a book that had word-for-word of the 3 gospels. That's it. IF your looking to just read the gospels, you can probably print them off the net for free.
A Good Book.......2006-08-01
In the movie and the book, "The Da Vinci Code," scriptures were quoted from both the Gospel of Philip and the Gospel of Mary Magdalene. "Holy Blood Holy Grail" also explores the connection with certain ancient texts. This book looks at these Gospels as well as The Gospel of Thomas. It is written in an open and easy to read format.
How to make money on the back of a fashion........2006-07-29
By using both a big typeface and a wide line-spacing, the author (or his publisher) has managed to bloat the number of the pages in this book to a thin 157.
Of those, only 24 are devoted to historical, theological or philological introductions to the texts, all the rest are filled by the translations of the gospels themselves.
The part advertised in the title as: "Inside The Da Vinci Code & Holy Blood, Holy Grail" takes exactly three lines; neither those two books nor their authors are even mentioned in the bibliography which almost exclusively lists other translations of the apocryphal gospels, to the well-nigh complete exclusion of works _on_ the apocrypha itself.
If you are looking for a work that will explain to you how the apocrypha supports (or not) the works of Baigent and Brown, better read Elaine Pagels ("The Gnostic Gospels"), or if you prefer a lighter style "the Complete Idiot Guide to the Gnostic Gospels".
In short, very disapointing.
Gnosticism Explained.......2006-06-11
This book contains a simple and easy to understand overview of Gnosticism leading into the very same scriptures quoted in the movie, "The Da Vinci Code." I enjoyed the book because it put the text in question back into context. Having the entire books of Mary Magdalene and Philip brought a deeper understanding of how the scriptures fit into the movie and what sparked the belief that Jesus could have been married to Mary. The book of Thomas was very interesting also and gave more insight into the belief system.
The author has just released "The Gospel of Mary Magdalene". It has more information on Gnostic theology but it has the same translation as this book.
This book is well worth the read.
Da Vinci Code, Holy Blood, Holy Grail, Jesus and Mary Magdalen.......2006-04-21
This is a well written book. It gives the reader a mini-course in Gnostic beliefs and terms as a primer so the texts that follow can be easily understood.Gnostic cosmology and theology is explained in basic and clear terms. Then, the Gospels of Philip, Mary Magdalene, and Thomas follow, each with a brief history of how the codex was found, its age, and its place in the scheme of things. The result is a vivid and deep understanding.
The scriptures that sparked the modern debate about Jesus and Mary Magdalene are there, clear as day.
Here are a couple of the verses that seem to indicate a special relationship between Mary and Jesus along with comments from the book.
And the companion (Consort) was Mary of Magdala (Mary Magdalene). The Lord loved Mary more than all the other disciples and he kissed her often on her mouth (the text is missing here and the word "mouth" is assumed). The others saw his love for Mary and asked him: "Why do you love her more than all of us?" The Savior replied, "Why do I not love you in the same way I love her?"... Gospel of Philip...
Peter said to Mary; "Sister we know that the Savior loved you more than all other women. Tell us the words of the Savior that you remember and know, but we have not heard and do not know. Mary answered him and said; "I will tell you what He hid from you."... The Gospel of Mary Magdalene...
Seizing on the texts above, writers of both fiction and non-fiction allowed their pens to run freely amidst conjecture and postulation of marriage and children between Jesus and Mary Magdalene.
The writers of The Da Vinci Code and Holy Blood, Holy Grail took these passages and expanded them into storylines that have held readers captive with anticipation.
Did Jesus take Mary to be his wife? Could the couple have produced children? Gnostic theology leaves open the possibility.

Product Description
Dr. Vern G. Swanson has produced a thought-provoking book on the topic of the Holy Grail and the bloodline of Jesus. His perspective on the subject has grown after reading nearly 400 books on the Holy Grail, and his 28 years of research on the topic. Going far beyond the mortally flawed best sellers, Holy Blood, Holy Grail and The Da Vinci Code, his epic book will be applicable to both Mormon and non-Mormon audiences. It is certainly the most significant scholarly tome on the Holy Grail and the bloodline yet.

Book Description
A nineteenth century French priest discovers something in his mountain village at the foot of The Pyrenees which enabled him to amass and spend a fortune of millions of pounds. The tale seems to begin with buried treasure and then turns into an unprecedented historical detective story — a modern Grail quest leading back through cryptically coded parchments, secret societies, the Knights Templar, the Cathar heretics of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries and a dynasty of obscure French kings deposed more than 1,300 years ago. The author's conclusions are persuasive at the core is not material riches but a secret — a secret of explosive and contraversialproportions, which radiates out from the little Pyrenees village to all the way to contemporary politics and the entire edifice of the Christian faith. It involves nothing less than the Holy Grail.

Reason and the Real Mystery.......2005-08-27
This is one of my favourite books because of what it symbolizes. This book was first published nearly a quarter of a century ago, BEFORE there was a market for historical fiction and non-fiction works relating to Jesus and his family. The 21st century Jesus-mania has inspired all kinds of sensational publications by all kinds of crackpots.
But these guys - Baigent, Leigh, Lincoln - were the real deal. They investigated a mystery in Rennes-le-Chateau and stumbled upon a supposed secret society called the Priory of Sion. Although some of the claims made by certain parties have proven doubtful or false, there are several threads in this book that remain as valid and important today as when the book was first written.
This is the foundation book that introduces one to the issues of (often fraudulent) claims of the early Church, the potential messianic bloodline, questions regarding the Knights Templar and the repression of the Dead Sea Scrolls.
Once a person has read through this 'introductory text', there is a plethora of related reading with which to follow up. These same authors (in ones or twos or all three) have also written The Messianic Legacy, Temple & The Lodge, Dead Sea Scroll Deception, Inquisition and Ancient Traces. The first three are great books for following up the various threads from Holy Blood Holy Grail. The fourth book is interesting for the detail of the events leading up to the monstrous Inquisition; Ancient Traces is a solo effort by Baigent which is interesting for its discussion and refutation of commonly accepted archaeological and other theories.
Another great book in this stream is Robert Eisenman's James, the Brother of Jesus. A great academic book in its own right, also useful for weightlifting, this book depicts the actual history of the man who would later be known to the world as Jesus and discusses, indepth, the events preceding and succeeding his lifetime.
The most important aspect of these books is not so much their conclusions but the possibilities and ideas they present. For those of us who are curious about actual history, outside of the religion- and politically-motivated spoon-fed pablum history that has become the status quo, these books are a great find.
Although Holy Blood Holy Grail is dry reading in some places, overall it is a really good book that introduces us to many of the concepts that are being thrown around by academics, sensationalists and academic sensationalists today regarding messianic bloodlines, etc.
Happy Reading!
international bestseller.......2004-02-29
This book has sold millions of copies in Europe... and no wonder! It is an intriguing history of the tenuous thread of a bloodline being passed down through the royal houses of Europe... that bloodline being in large part what made (makes) them royal.
The 1996 edition is a revised edition so the better of the two. There is some controvery over the reality of the Priority of Sion, but IMHO this has not been disproved, and I suspect a disinformation campaign.
I also recommend a follow up with The Elixir and the Stone (available at Amazon.ca but as of this date, not here at Amazon.com) and Laurence Gardener's History of the Grail Kings.
Extremely interesting reading!
fact, fancy, or something else...?.......2003-11-04
When my mother gave me this book, saying she could never take communion again, I was shocked. When I read the introduction, I was intrigued. When I began reading in earnest, I was enthralled...
Could Jesus have actually been married, fathered a family, and had them escape the Romans?
Fantastic, crazy, UNORTHODOX, yes- but could it be true, and does it MATTER? Since we were small, we have been told that Jesus was a poor, gentle peaceloving, almost non-Jewish Jew(after all, Hollywood has always gone to great lengths to make him look positively gentile), who allowed himself to be murdered by the Romans with barely a whimper, and that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute that inhabited the periphery of the very male world of first century Palestine.
But what if we look at the story from a truly historical perspective...
The region was swollen with fundimentalists, not unlike the Islamists we face today, and Jesus would have been a very orthodox Jew. Perhaps his story has been filtered over the centuries so that it is no longer recognizable...
And nowhere in the Bible does it refer to Mary as a prostitute- historians are begrudgingly now laying this interpretaion at the feet of a chauvinistic revisionist church- is it so unlikely that a woman in the company of a group of men traveling throughout the Holy Land, would have been married to one of those men? And why would it have been so unlikely that that man was Jesus? After all, a man of Jesus' age would have been looked upon with suspicion if he was NOT married...
Ah, the historical possibilites!
Link these intrigues with the Knights Templar and the mystery of their origins and purpose, the secretive Prior de Sion and a strange priest who was able to face down the power of the Catholic Church after the discovery of a secret in the mountains between France and Spain, while he amassed a fortune and built a tower dedicated to the Magdalene- put all this together and you have a yarn that will grip the heart of any mystery buff, history fan or conspiracy nut!
True- I don't know.
Plausible- yes...just plausible enough to make you look at history and religion from a new perspective, and perhaps make communion impossible.
Challanging.......2003-03-10
If you like life inside "the box," then this is not a book for you. I have been a conspiracy theorist and a follower of the so-called "secret societies" for years. Most of the book deals with these aspects of history and politics.
However, I found the most interesting chapters to be the ones dealing with the practical side of Jesus' life in Roman occupied Palastine in the first century. Some of the conclusions will absolutely astonish you!!!
Being raised in an orthodox religious atmosphere, my perceptions of Christianity and Jesus himself have been radically altered. Although shaken, I have not faltered because I read David R. Hawkins' books which gave me a contexts for the authors' suppositions.
This is an intellectual as well as a spiritual read. If you can wade through the first 10-11 chapters, I highly recommend it to dedicated, Christian (or even non-Christian), spiritual seekers.
