ALONE
Thirteen-year-old Brian Robeson is on his way to visit his father when the single-engine plane in which he is flying crashes. Suddenly, Brian finds himself alone in the Canadian wilderness with nothing but a tattered Windbreaker and the hatchet his mother gave him as a present -- and the dreadful secret that has been tearing him apart since his parent's divorce. But now Brian has no time for anger, self pity, or despair -- it will take all his know-how and determination, and more courage than he knew he possessed, to survive.
For twenty years Gary Paulsen's award-winning contemporary classic has been the survival story with which all others are compared. This new edition, with a reading group guide, will introduce a new generation of readers to this page-turning, heart-stopping adventure.

Hatchet.......2007-10-24
I read and you have to read Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. I would rate it five out of five stars. It was a survival fiction book. After I read Hatchet, I stuck to that genre. I admired Paulsen's description since he made each and every detail matter later on in the book. If you are looking for a book that will take you into the forest, lost, alone, scared, and yet surviving as if you weren't from the city and knew nearly nothing about survival, or you're just looking for a book you won't want to put down, Hatchet by Gary Paulsen is the book for you.

Surviving the Book.......2007-10-24
Hatchet is an adventure book about Brian, a normal teenager, whose plane lands in a Canadian forest. I liked the way the author wrote this book because I felt like I was in the story. This book is entertaining because it's not to long or not to short, and it keeps my attention all the time. I would read the other books about Brian because all the books are about surving the forest. My favorite part was when he survived the plane crash because by living the story kept going. If he died the story would have died too. So don't put down this book .
KCS Hatchet.......2007-10-06
"The nick wasn't large, but the hatchet was important to him, was his only tool, and he should not have thrown it. He should have kept it in his hand, and make a tool of some kind to help push an animal away. Make a staff, he thought, or a lance, and save the hachet."
Brian is a 13 year old boy who's parents got devorced. He was to stay through the school year with his mom and the summer with his dad, on his flight to visit his dad in a small plane, the pilot had a heart attack, jurked his leg and set a new route for the plane to nowhere. Brian, being the only one on the plane besides the pilot could not fly, and the plane crashed leaving the pilot dead and Brian stranded with only a hatchet for a tool. Brian must learn to survive in the wilderness, alone.
This realistic fictional book teaches you to never give up. If Brian had given up on getting food, building a shelter, or hope that some one will find him, he would have died. I really liked Hatchet and you if you read it, you will love it too. This book is for every person, adult or child, because of the authors way to pull you into the book.
Engaging.......2007-09-11
I read this book in trying to find one that might interest my son. It was just what I needed. My son loves hunting and fishing. He enjoys reading when the right material comes along. Hatched grabbed his attention and we have had Gary Paulsen books in our home ever since. It is a book about living in the wilderness and all that that entails. There is no offensive language or explicit language which has ruined many a good book. I recommend this to those who love the outdoors.

Book Review of "Hatchet" by Jackie.......2002-09-16
The story was about a boy named Brian, who was trying to survive in the wilderness. One summer, Brian flew to Canada to visit his father. The pilot had a heart attack and died. Brian had to fly the plane. He flew into water and was hurt very badly. The only things he had were the clothes he had on, money, and a hatchet. Now he has to try to survive with the things he has. I liked the book because it was exciting and it had a lot of aciton. My favorite part was when Brian went into the plane to get the first aid kit. I think you should read it because it is about a boy who is trying to survive alone in the wilderness.
This is a great book about survival and courage.......1999-05-12

Adventure plus.......2007-10-04
The Spanish Language version of Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, is a great adventure/survival story for middle school readers. Alone in the wilderness with only a hatchet to aid him, the young protagonist faces exterior forces and his own inner fears.
The Hatchet.......2003-09-08
The hatchet is about a boy named Brian. Brian is going through an emotional trauma. His parents just broke up, and now his dad lives in northern Canada. He is going to visit him when the pilot of the two-seater plane he is traveling in has a heart attack. Brian flies the plane for a while until it runs out of fuel. He lands it on a lake. He climbs out and swims to shore. He lies there for a few days, but decides to build a shelter when he gets fed up with the mosquitoes. Lots of animals get in including a skunk, a porcupine, and a bear. He makes it stronger, only to have it ripped down by a tornado. He makes up his mind to get a supply box from the plane. He builds a raft, swims out there and then almost passes out underwater when he sees that the pilot's skin and eyes have been food for the fish. He brings the box back to shore and gets rescued after leaving the emergency transmitter on. It's a really good book and you should read it.
Excellent!.......2002-10-25
Though I read this book quite a while ago, I still remember how interesting and riviting it was. The story is intense, and draws the reader into the thoughts and emotions of Brian- the main (and practically ONLY) character that is shown. Definately a must-have!
Hatchet.......2002-02-22
Hatchet is a riveting book. It combines drama, comedy, and suspence all in one action pacted book. It's about a boy who ends up alone in a Canadian forest after a plane crash, and all the adventures he has. He has to learn a lot about surviving in the wilderness, including how to find food, shelter, and how to live with wild animals. He learns a lot about himself and how much heart it takes to be without everything you would normally live with. I enjoyed this book very much. Sometimes i found myself falling asleep with the book over my face because I did not want to go to sleep so i wouldn't miss an exciting event that was just around the corner. I'm going to keep reading Gary Paulsen. He is an excelent writer.
Hatchet - A Cry in the Wild.......2000-05-11
Hatchet - an realistic survival story that is eminently well written. Gary Paulsen has comboned his own knowledge of survival and woodcraft with the easily beliavable character of Brian Robeson; the result is an award-winning novel that will not be put down until it is finished.

What do you do when you're being charged by a red-eyed furious wall of brown fur that is an insane moose? How do you make a weapon with your bare hands? How do you sneak up on a grouse or a rabbit, kill it with a well-aimed arrow, and cook it over a fire--without a pot? All this and lots more is essential learning for Brian Robeson, the young wilderness survivor in Gary Paulsen's classic novel Hatchet. In writing that book, Paulsen was determined that everything that happened to Brian--the survival techniques and the physical and emotional traumas--would be drawn closely from reality and his own experiences. In Guts he reveals the stories behind Hatchet, as he lived them. Linked to specific incidents from Brian's ordeal are the skills and insights Paulsen learned as a teenager passionately in love with hunting in the north woods of Minnesota, the extremes of exhaustion and cold he knew in running the Iditarod dog races in Alaska, the chilling close-up knowledge of heart attacks from his experiences as a volunteer ambulance driver, the silence and majesty of the wilderness. Some great stories are told here: the child killed by two kicks from the razor-sharp hooves of a small deer, the difficulties of sharing a rescue helicopter ride with a terrified dog team, and some spectacular gross-outs about the nutritional need to eat every part of an animal. Hatchet fans will be agog, and parents and teachers will be thrilled to see the enthusiastic reaction of even the most reluctant readers. (Ages 10 to 14) --Patty Campbell
Book Description
Guess what -- Gary Paulsen was being kind to Brian. In Guts, Gary tells the real stories behind the Brian books, the stories of the adventures that inspired him to write Brian Robeson's story: working as an emergency volunteer; the death that inspired the pilot's death in Hatchet; plane crashes he has seen and near-misses of his own. He describes how he made his own bows and arrows, and takes readers on his first hunting trips, showing the wonder and solace of nature along with his hilarious mishaps and mistakes. He shares special memories, such as the night he attracted every mosquito in the county, or how he met the moose with a sense of humor, and the moose who made it personal. There's a handy chapter on "Eating Eyeballs and Guts or Starving: The Fine Art of Wilderness Nutrition." Recipes included. Readers may wonder how Gary Paulsen survived to write all of his books -- well, it took guts.

Guts was Great.......2007-03-26
Reviewed by Gregory III Jr.
In my personal opinion, I would give, Guts, by Gary Paulsen a 10 out of 10. The reason I think this is that Gary thoroughly explains the events that happen in the Hatchet series, which were based upon his real life experiences. Gary tells about his encounters with moose and how he survived by using certain methods to get the moose to go away. Gary also explains how when you're in the wilderness, you have to do everything to survive. He tells about how mostly everything in an animal can be used for food, including the brain and heart, and digestive organs. He also says how even the weirdest things, like turtle eggs, can be edible too. He also tells the tales of near disasters. Which, he puts into the Brian series, but more severe. And, He even gives recipes for cooking meat and other food when in the wilderness with no tools or modern cooking technology. Everything in this book is about Gary's life and what he did to get through what happened. This book is great book just to read for excitement, or if you want some tips for going into the wild, or even just going camping. So, in conclusion, this book is appropriate for all readers and great for anyone interested in the great outdoors.
Explains His Other Books.......2007-02-16
Gary Paulsen is a really great writer of young adult books. His style is easy to read, and he makes the most outrageous situations sound like they are completely normal. This book is autobiographical; it describes times in his life when he had a close relationship with the wilderness, and he explains how these experiences allowed him to write his books, especially "Hatchet." It was interesting to read how he worked the details of the things that happened in his life into the lives of his characters. Parts of this book scared me, amazed me, and made me laugh out loud. It's incredible, after all he has been through, that the man is still alive.
Guts by Gary Paulsen.......2007-01-16
Guts
Author: Gary Paulsen
Book review by Nate Scanlon
In Guts Gary Paulsen shares experiences from his own life. He has worked as an emergency worker where he helped people in plane crashes. On one of his adventures he came face to face with a moose. Paulsen used these experiences to write his books Hatchet and the other Brian books.
A marsh is where the story takes place in Guts. Brian had a lot of frustration trying to figure out how to find food. He wants to find a place to live to keep him safe from all the danger.
Brian is a smart and very confident kid. He is confident because he was confident about making it home. And he is smart because he built a fire.
The theme of this story is survival and self- Confidence. Brian has a lot of problems trying to find food and safe water. Some of the things Brian had to eat are things I would never want to eat. Brian also had to find shelter and wood to build a fire. He had to learn to live off the land too.
I think Gary Paulsen has had some pretty cool adventures. Some of the things he had to do were gross. If you have read Hatchet and the other Brian books you will like Guts.
Guts.......2006-12-21
Would you like to know how to make your own bow and arrows? Or see how mean moose really are? Guts will show you. Gary Paulsen has written several books on survival, but guts is all about him. In the book, he also writes a little about his own life in the army, riding in planes, driving an ambulance, and dogsledding.
I would personally recommend this book to anyone who likes the outdoors. If hunting, fishing, backpacking, canoeing or anything around that area is a hobby of yours, buy or rent Guts or any Gary Paulsen book. Women might like it too!
This book shows when he was a teen he made his own bow and arrows. Bows and arrows are as quite as a breeze. His first firearm was a .22 caliber bolt action Remington rifle. It was his first gun. He kept that gun for a longtime. He shot quail, pheasant and much other small game with this gun and his other weapons. He then grew up to be an ambulance driver, be in the army, and in a dogsled team.
This book is a fiction book. Guts was published by Dell Laurel-leaf. The books copyright is in 2001. Guts has 148 pages. These stories inspired his other books.
Guts.......2006-12-21
Gary Paulsen has written many great books and this book is no different. Guts is about all the many great and wonderful adventures, and the unusual jobs and moving up to Canada try to get money and hunting for some food that Gary Paulsen and moving up, and that he has written these stories in the other great books he has written. This book is great if you like to hear other people story's about the outdoors. The way Gary Paulsen describes his story's it make you feel like you are standing right by his side when he is being attacked by a moose or when he is eating guts and eyes to not die of starvation by him self because no one is around. Each of these stories is as action packed as all the James Bond movies combined.
I recommend this book to anybody because; it is as easy to read as a picture book. This book is also one of those books that once you start reading it you can't put it down; it is that good of a book. At 150 pages this book is easy and great for everybody to read. Gary Paulsen said that these stories are the stories that inspired him to write Hatchet, The River, Brian's Winter, and Brian's Return.

Customer Reviews:
Brian's Winter.......2007-05-02
Instead of thirteen-year-old Brian being rescued after living one summer in the Canadian wilderness, this book left him stranded throughout the winter. The story began with Brian already in top physical shape and with some knowledge of survival in the woods. Like the other Hatchet books, Brian does impossibly difficult things with the greatest of ease. Making a bow, arrow shafts and arrow heads are never easy, but Brian can do anything. The plot was familiar and very predictable, as are many other Paulsen books. The storyline was unrealistic, and one hoped as the story went on that Brain would succumb to hypothermia, or be mauled by a bear. The book takes care to try and be authentic, but instead feels free to make up anything in order to create a more exciting adventure book. Brian should have died in the original plane crash or shortly after so that no one would be subject to the torture that is Paulsen's work. This book is just a carbon copy of all the other Brian books, only this one is set during the winter. If you have read Hatchet, then you have already basically read this book.
The book that put you in the book.......2007-02-21
The book Brian's Winter has to be one of the best books that I have read in a long time. I am not the biggest fan of Gary Paulsen but, this book made me feel like I was actually at the camp he built and could hear all the sounds of nature.
When Brian Robeson's plane crashed, he was stranded in the northern Canadian Woods. Since the pilot of the plane died, Brian was on his own. After surviving the summer, he found a survival kit with food, water, a rifle and other essentials for surviving. Unfortunately, the rifle was broken after so many uses. He had to settle for the bow he made.
Brian had lost track of the days and didn't realize that winter was coming! The sign in which he realized winter would arrive soon is that cold rain poured for days. He began to worry and his food supply was low. To his luck, he saw wolves coming back from the woods with food in their mouths. He went to the area where they came from and found a half eaten doe lying out in the open. Brian needed food so he carried the doe back to camp.
As the days went by, the air became very cold. His doe meat was running low. He knew that he needed a larger animal to survive. Brian's old bow would not be able to kill large animals. So he made a larger bow with larger arrows. Brian also made a lance when he needed the extra boost. When he went out hunting, he came across a moose. The moose was enormous! Brian shot his large bow and hit the mark, but it didn't kill the moose. The moose charged, but Brian used the lance and stabbed it. After taking the moose back to camp, he realized his tattered and torn clothes would not suffice. So he made a jacket out of fur from the deer and rabbit fur. He also made moccasins out of the same material.
One morning he woke up to find layers of snow covering the entire woods! Brian could go nowhere with this thick snow. He easily resolved the problem by making snowshoes. One night while he was asleep, he heard an explosion like a gun shot! He thought that someone was out in the woods. In the morning Brian investigated the trees by the lake. He realized that the sap in the trees expanded in the tree that caused so much pressure the trees exploded. Many days later, Brian went looking around the woods. He found a peculiar track leading on to the lake. Brian followed the track to find a trapper family! They were out there in the woods every mid-winter. They had a bush plane that came by every three weeks. One week later, the plane came back and Brian returned home.
Brian's Winter by: D19.......2006-12-08
Do you love survival novels? Then Brian's Winter by Gary Paulsen is a great book for you. This book is a sequel to Hatchet. The main character is Brian Robeson. He is stranded in the Canadian wilderness. He got there because when he was flying to go visit his father the pilot had a heart attack and the plane crashed. He survived summer but he knows his deadliest enemy is coming: winter. Will he be able to survive the freezing temperature? One thing I liked about this book is it is exciting and you never knew what was coming next. The genre of this book is realistic fiction. This book is well suited for kids from the ages of 9-12. Gary Paulsen uses good descriptive words that make the book interesting. I would highly recommend this book.
