Product Description
Green Eggs and Ham, Hardcover Illustrated in color. Sam-I-Am mounts a determined campaign to convince another Seuss character to eat a plate of green eggs and ham.
Amazon.com
This timeless Dr. Seuss classic was first published in 1960, and has been delighting readers ever since. Sam-I-am is as persistent as a telemarketer, changing as many variables as possible in the hopes of convincing the nameless skeptic that green eggs and ham are a delicacy to be savored. He tries every manner of presentation with this "nouveau cuisine"--in a house, with a mouse, in a box, with a fox, with a goat, on a boat--to no avail. Then finally, finally the doubter caves under the tremendous pressure exerted by the tireless Sam-I-am. And guess what? Well, you probably know what happens, but even after reading Green Eggs and Ham the thousandth time, the climactic realization that green eggs and ham are "so good, so good, you see" is still a rush. As usual, kids will love Dr. Seuss's wacky rhymes and whimsical illustrations--and this time, they might even be so moved as to finally take a taste of their broccoli. (Ages 4 to 8)

Great book.......2007-10-07
A great book. Perhaps it's a little repetitive for those of us who have read it 15 times to our children, but at its heart this is an uplifting, joyful book. Try it - you'll like it!
I shudder at the message this story sends to our children........2007-09-09
If you're searching for a literary example of peer pressure, look no further than Dr. Seuss's subtly horrifying "Green Eggs and Ham." The "hero" of this tale, Sam-I-Am, spends the entirety of the book trying to force green eggs and ham upon a nameless skeptic. The "villain" turns down the offer several times, but Sam-I-Am persists, going so far as to follow him home in order to make him try the green eggs and ham. He uses several textbook methods of peer pressure, including the famous, "You'll never know that you don't like it if you don't try it." He refuses to respect the man's right to say no, and badgers him incessantly until he caves under the pressure.
What disgusts me most about the end of the story is that once the man tries the green eggs and ham, he loves them and is simply another addition to a pool of addicts. Dr. Seuss's tragic allegory for the rising drug use among young people that plagued his time period is brilliant, but certainly not appropriate for young children. Sam-I-Am is too easily twisted to become a hero, opening the antagonist's mind to new things, rather than a metaphor for Satan as I believe was originally intended.
In conclusion, do not read this book to your children unless you are willing to explain to them that people like Sam-I-Am should be avoided at all costs, and that they should never follow the path of the story's antagonist.
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Dr Seuss is most definitely responsible for putting a lot of people off their dinner, and also for encouraging the experimentation with food coloring in a whole range of normal foodstuffs that probably did not need spectrum alteration in the first place.
What a devious, sneaky and subversive publication.
Green Eggs and Ham.......2007-07-16
This book is great for all ages. This book is great for children who are just learning to read and who need help with rhyming. The book is small enough that a child can hold it themselves and don't have to worry about harming the book or dropping it.
Green eggs and ham ??? In one word, how---absurd !!! SMILES.......2007-07-12
The children's book entitled Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss does a great job of teaching young kids to try new things while increasing their vocabulary. The illustrations are very nicely done with hybrid "things" replacing people. These "things" are part human and part "thing"--great concept to stimulate a child's imagination! The text is written in easy to understand words so that with a little help your child be able to read this book independently soon.
The book tells a cute story of how a smaller "thing" or, "person named Sam" follows a "grown up thing" or, "person who is not Sam" around, beseeching them to try some food they've never eaten before, namely green eggs and ham. Happily, the food turns out to be delicious in the end. While the basic moral of the story is not to be afraid of trying new things; the child learns a lot of vocabulary and comparisons at the same time. Great!
Specifically, children learn the concepts of "here," "there" and "anywhere;" "like" versus "do not like;" and modes of transportation including "car" and "train." Excellent!
The book is nicely bound and the strength of the hardcover binding makes the book tolerate the bending and occasional carelessness of a young child who is learning to read partly by using this book. Great!
I highly recommend Green Eggs and Ham for younger kids who are just learning to read. This book will increase their vocabulary by introducing words, comparisons and pictures. The child gets encouragement to try new things; and the adorable illustrations will delight children everywhere.
Great job, Dr. Seuss!

Fun and Healthy Cookbook.......2007-09-25
I was surprised by this cookbook. My son brought it home from school and we used it to combine reading and cooking. He had fun reading the recipe titles and helping me cook the recipes. But, what really sold me on this cookbook, was that the recipes were healthy - many times cookbooks for cooking with kids are high in sugar and fat so that the kids will "like" the end product. However, this cookbook has great tasting recipes that are also healthy.
More fun for me then the Kids.......2007-05-14
I work with children all the time. The book itself they didn't find as fun as I did, but they have enjoyed a few of the recipes. I enjoyed the whole thing. The recipes aren't always great, but with a little bit of tweaking they were great.
Green Eggs and Ham Cookbook.......2007-01-30
Wonderful ways to make reading and cooking with parents FUN! There are many great thing to cook or mix to make the reading even more exciting.
Fun and Imaginary Recipes.......2007-01-16
This book was fantasticly fun! The recipes are inventive and imaginary following right along with the Dr. Suess theme. Each recipe comes with a quote directly from a character or scene in a variety of the Dr. Suess books. It's great for the aspiring cook in your household with recipes that are simple, attainable, and a little quirky.
A New Tradition.......2007-01-10
Since starting school, my 5 year old son, who has only celebrated Channuka, asked, "Who is this Santa Claus guy and why doesn't he come to my house?". We needed to start a family tradition that would make Christmas day a special one for him too. After watching the original cartoon version of "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas", we sat down to a delicious Who Feast. What fun! This will be just the first of hopefully many years of a delicious and meaningful tradition.
We have big plans to read each of our Dr. Suess books and create their respective treats.

Great for both parents & kids!.......2007-01-18
My son (4 1/2 yrs) asks to listen to this every time we get in the car. The narration is wonderful, with a soothing rhythmic quality. Our favorite is the Jason Alexander's rousing version of Green Eggs & Ham, and his reading of the ABC's (there's a sneeze at the letter "K" which threw my 22 month old into hysterics. I've never seen a baby laugh so hard. To this day it makes him to laugh every time). David Hyde Pierce is great at the tongue twisters, which is why I guess most of those stories are read by him. The Michael McKeaon ones are a little weak, however we don't currently have the books that he reads, so it just may be that we're not familiar with those stories. These stories seem to make whatever ride we're going on that much shorter. There's also been many times when we've arrived at our destination & my oldest son will ask to stay in the car until the story is over.
And as for the other reviewer saying this CD is as boring as an insurance seminar.....I currently am going to school for my insurance license & I can assure you the CD is most certainly not boring. The insurance classes on the other hand......
Don't waste your money.......2006-05-08
As great as Dr. Seuss is, this package is terrible.
Most importantly, the readings/performances of these stories are BORING! These are some of the most imaginiative, fun-to-read stories on the planet and the performances have all the enthusiasm of an insurance seminar.
Anoher gripe is that it's just the two CDs -- no book or additional packaging that's fun for the kids to look at (which maybe was my fault for assuming otherwise).
Plus, there are two CDs when it seems like they could have piled it all together on a single disc. I suppose they wanted to include more stories, but it ends up being a more of a pain to make sure you have the 'right' disc for the story your kids want. If there wasn't enough room on one CD, cut one of the weaker performances -- there were plenty to choose from.
Overall, this was a big disappointment. Our family loves Dr. Seuss, but this package doesn't do him justice.
A Must for Parents and Seuss Collectors!.......2004-06-17
This is a terrific audio CD of our Dr. Seuss favorites. My sons love to read along in the car and at home. The celebrity readings are great to listen to. Even my husband and I listen in the car, long after the kids have dozed off. Don't miss out on this collection. Well worth it!
Seuss without the Tang-Tonguelers.......2004-02-22
If you've wearied of Green Eggs and Ham and Sam-I-Am, and would rather not Hop on Pop, you'll be grateful for this CD set with lively readings of the kid-favorites by familiar voices like Jason Alexander, David Hyde Pierce, and Michael McKean. For young readers, pair them up with the books to follow along and VOILA! Instant Readers! this year is Dr. Seuss's 100th birthday!
Product Description
C'mon! Try them, in Latin. Sam-I-ams smiling enthusiasm for the seemingly unappetizingly tinted green eggs and ham is undaunted, despite repeated disdain shown by an unnamed, dour disparager. Sam will not give up, though, and offers the dish over and over, proposing that it be sampled under sometimes whacky circumstances and in odd locales (with a goat, on a boat, in the rain, on a train, in a box, with a fox, etc.). In the end Sam does get the grumpy disparager to take a tasteif only to get Sam off his back. The disparagers demeanor quickly changes to all smiles when he discovers to his surprise that disdained green eggs and ham are, in fact, quite tasty. Sam-I-am, yet another delightfully plucky Seuss protagonist, allows both adults and humans to lookwith the objectivity humor so adeptly affordsat our all-too-human tendency towards knee-jerk negativity in response to anything that is new or different. Special Features Dr. Seuss perennial favorite, Green Eggs and Ham, is here rendered in spirited Latin: in trochaic rhythm with rhyme in the last two syllables, a sprightly verse-form that goes toe-to-toe with Seusss whimsical drawings. Virent Ova! Viret Perna!! is a true delightLatin as it is infrequently experienced: fun, exhilarating, ebullient. This Latin-language edition is a welcome, all-occasion gift, a delightful way to revisit a treasured tale, and an enjoyable way to refresh your high school Latin. Fast-moving Latin translation that echoes the lighthearted spirit of the original Original artwork of Dr. Seuss Latin-to-English vocabulary Note on How to Read these Verses

Learning fun.......2006-07-19
This classic childrens book is a first rate way for a beginning latin student to practice reading skills.
Tasty in any language..........2003-10-29
I will like them in a school,
I will like them like a fool,
I will like them dressed in satin,
Yes, I'll like them, even in Latin!
I must confess, I do profess,
I do so like Green Eggs and Ham!
`Green Eggs and Ham' has been translated into many languages, just as other classic Dr. Seuss pieces have been so translated. So, why should it be unusual that `Green Eggs and Ham' would finally make it into Latin?
The publishers Bolchazy-Carducci, of Wauconda, Illinois, have devoted efforts toward an enterprise to publishing modern classics into Latin - and who ever said it was a dead language. There are many titles to be had, but few as well loved as Dr. Seuss, and few of those are as well known and loved as `Green Eggs and Ham'.
The listing of vocabulary words at the end includes entries for about 100 primary words (depending, of course, upon how you count the words). The original challenge to Dr. Seuss for `Green Eggs and Ham' was to produce a book with no more than 50 primary words. To keep the story line, in Latin there are a few more words to be used, but still this book can serve as a basic introduction to help with vocabulary for those studying Latin, and want a break from the Vulgate or from Cicero.
The story line proceeds apace, similar to the same story in English. This is a translation, after all, and not a revision or rewriting. However, because the Sam/ham rhyme doesn't neatly fit in Latin, one major revision is in the key rhyming phrase.
Non mi placent, O Pincerna,
Virent ova! Viret perna!
`Ova' is a recognisable word even to those who have not studied Latin - the ovum means `egg', the ovaries of course being the place eggs are produced. `Perna' is the word for ham. (Ironically, the word `ovum' is a neuter term in Latin, rather than female; the word `perna' is a feminine word.) The word `Pincerna' means waiter or server (it can even mean butler). Virent/viret is actually a verb, meaning `to be green'. So, the above phrase would roughly translate into
They do not please me, O waiter,
Eggs that are green! Ham that is green!
Yes, I know, it suffers a bit in translation; imagine the power of poetry and how sometime this can be lost in translation. Thus, it is important to understand the literary license with which Jennifer Tunberg and Terence Tunberg have translated the text. They have made an effort to make sure the meter, rhyme, and story fit the text as a Latin text, rather than a forced translation.
The story continues as the waiter tries to convince the reluctant diner to at least try the `virent ova/viret perna'. They are offered in a `cista' (box); they are offered with a `vulpes' (fox); they are offered `sub tecto' (in a house); they are offered with a `mus'(mouse) - all offerings are, of course, flatly rejected, until near the end, when a taste, just a taste, is accepted. And the rest is history (a seemingly ancient history in Latin, now, to be precise!).
Despite the fact that the authors, in their appendix, say that they have not in fact tried to duplicate the precise rhyme-and-rhythm system that Dr. Seuss developed in the English `Green Eggs and Ham', in fact many of the versicles throughout do have a cadence to them that is reminiscent of the beloved scheme for which Dr. Seuss is famous. For example, read the following lines aloud:
Dapem tuam vix probabo.
Tuos cibos non gustabo.
Or
Omni loco tuam pernam,
Semper ova tua spernam.
They employ in many cases (as can be seen above) an eight-syllable line of trochaic rhythm that conclude in end-rhymes of at least two syllables (not just the final syllable). This is a common rhyming pattern in ancient Latin, used in secular and religious verse, dramatic and comedic. This can approximate the pattern, if read with the right intonations, the same kind of feel one would get from Dr. Seuss!
While this is not a Latin grammar, and the construction of verbs, noun endings, etc. are not explicated, still one can begin to pick up the basics of Latin grammatical construction from texts like `Virent Ova! Viret Perna!' Jennifer Tunberg (Ph.D., Oxford) and Terence Tunberg (Ph.D., Toronto) are both educators, and thus have a care for the reader learning something from the text in addition to gaining enjoyment from it. While one could easily see the translation of a book such as `Green Eggs and Ham' into Latin as a purely academic exercise, in fact the book serves several purposes, including teaching (or re-teaching) Latin to students, and introducing the language to people who might not otherwise be exposed to it. Dr. Seuss eliminates somewhat the `intimidation factor' that Latin has for some, particularly when presented with Caesar or Cicero in long-winded passages.
This is a wonderfully fun book, a good gift for those who have everything, a good offering to the budding or the latent Latin scholar, and an interesting conversation piece even for those who have no Latin background at all. The classic line-art drawings, complete with green-coloured eggs and ham, the same Seussian characters, and the same wild drawings, are preserved here, so it looks at first glance like any ordinary Dr. Seuss book.
Like the Green Eggs and Ham themselves, you will enjoy this book QUOVIS LOCO - Anywhere!

My Daughter's Favorite Book by Dr. Seuss.......2004-09-08
Researchers constantly find that reading to children is valuable in a variety of ways, not least of which are instilling a love of reading and improved reading skills. With better parent-child bonding from reading, your child will also be more emotionally secure and able to relate better to others. Intellectual performance will expand as well. Spending time together watching television fails as a substitute.
To help other parents apply this advice, as a parent of four I consulted an expert, our youngest child, and asked her to share with me her favorite books that were read to her as a young child. One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish was her pick as the best of the books by Dr. Seuss.
One of the appeals of this book is that it is relatively easy to learn to read, yet has much more variety than most other early readers. So your child will feel like she or he has accomplished a lot with reading this book, which is correct.
The title gives the key to why this book works well as an early reader. One word is changed at a time, with a clear illustration next to it. Most children will read the illustrations like a rebus and later associate the words with the sounds of the name for the pictures. At some point, they begin reading from the words. Very nice!
Here's another sequence: "black fish blue fish old fish new fish."
Then, when he moves on, he uses simple rhymes: "This one has a little star. This one has a little car."
Next, he progresses to substituting "some" for "fish" and adding a single verb to make a sentence as in "Some are read . . . . Some are old."
So almost any child can soon begin to read along with few errors in the first 2 or 3 pages. Whenever the child can go no more, you can just keep going. With repetition, more of the book becomes memorized and the process continues.
There is another reward for you and your child: The book also previews many of the wonderful characters and rhyming schemes that appear in other Dr. Seuss books. As a result, it will be easier to get started reading those books. You will feel like you are seeing an old friend again.
You can also use each rhyme to take off on your own speculations. Our daughter used to love to come up with alternative rhymes that fit the pictures.
Books like this one make it great fun to be either a parent or a child. In some cases, this book will be there for you in both roles over 20 to 40 years!
Overcome your mistaken beliefs about how children can start to learn to read by seeing your child start naturally by associating the words with the pictures as you read this wonderful book to him or her!
great, fun plot and easy to read.......1999-04-14
