Perhaps the perfect children's bedtime book, Goodnight Moon is a short poem of goodnight wishes from a young rabbit preparing for--or attempting to postpone--his own slumber. He says goodnight to every object in sight and within earshot, including the "quiet old lady whispering hush." Clement Hurd's illustrations are simple and effective, alternating between small ink drawings and wide, brightly colored views of the little rabbit's room.

Finding all of the items mentioned throughout the book within the pictures is a good bedtime activity--a reappearing little mouse is particularly pesky. By the end of the little rabbit's goodnight poem, the story has quieted to a whisper, and the drawings have darkened with nightfall. She sees me whip out the book and quickly realizes that means it's bedtime. It was actually a fun read for myself as well (at least the first 17 times or so I read it).

We got this book as a gift at my baby shower. Having heard so many great things about this "classic," I was expecting a wonderful children's book. Maybe these high expectations were part of the problem, but I was extremely disappointed. I just don't see what the fuss is about-- just because something has a reputation for being a classic, doesn't mean it's good. The story is not interesting at all, but worse, the illustations are completely unengaging. I do not like that some of the pictures are really tiny, and the fact that every other page is in black and white seems unfitting for a children's book. My daughter is only 6 months old so I don't know her opinion of this book yet, but I can't get myself to read it to her. My mother-in-law can't understand how I don't consider this book to be a wonderful classic, but I think she's just being sentimental since she read it to her kids and can't see beyond this.

This seemingly simple book is my son's absolute favorite! I had no idea it would be such a hit, now I know why its a classic.

The illustrations are very simple and seem old fashion compared to most newer books out there. The colors you see on the cover are all the colors you'll find inside the book. And the pages do alternates between color and black & white, and yet... this book is completely adored by my 17 month son.

Great for bonding. He hands this book to any relative or friend he sees and then settles himself in their lap for a reading. I've never seen my child more animated with a book.
He roars "balloon!" and points to the drawing of the red balloon and also says 'chairs', 'mush' and 'hush' and yes, he was only 17 months old. :)
He just loves it, I often see him flipping thru the book on his own.

We have the lapbook edition with is also a boardbook but much bigger, however I would recommend buying this version.

The Lap book is difficult for my son to pick up and 'read' by himself and has gotten very bent up because of his laying on one side while trying to read the opposite page. Also the lap version is too big to throw in the diaper bag.

I also recommend purchasing the HBO special on DVD "Goodnight Moon and Other Sleepytime Tales".

My son saw this after we bought the book and it was so neat to see him run and get his book, making the connection between the book and the visuals in the dvd.

The dvd is completely wonderful in its own right. It features Susan Sarandon telling the goodnight moon story twice, in the beginning and the end of the dvd. She is an excellent narrator. :)
The goodnight moon graphics are the exact same as the book but are animated, just a little bit.

It also features Tony Bennet singing Dreamland, Lauren Hill singing Hush Little Baby, Natalie Cole, Aaron Neville and my son's favorite song on the dvd, Twinkle Tinkle Little Star sung by Patty LaBelle. My son says 'tinkle!' whene he knows its coming and actually sings along! The visuals are gorgeous of a little girl playing among the stars.

Over all the dvd is very soothing, my son watches/listens to it after his dinner as a wind down and before we read him the Goodnight Moon book and tuck him into his crib. :) Buy this book and also buy the dvd, your child will love them both.

I give this book as a baby shower gift or a birthday gift to my friends' kids who are 5 and under. It's a sure favorite.

I first had this book read to me at a public library when I was 4. I never owned it growing up, but I would borrow it and force my parents to read it to me.
I bought this book for my dear friend who is about to give birth as I write this for her little one. I think it is an integral part of the bedtime routine and it can be fun to have your child say goodnight to their room as well.

My 2 yr. old loves to call out every object in the pages. Since the text is meant to rhyme in the english version - wich gives it its charm- we read it in both languages. We are delighted by its simplicity and can't go a night without it. We love it and it will be passed on to my younger one.

Great Spanish reinforcement.......2007-03-23

I've read Goodnight moon to my now 5 month-old baby every night since he was less than two months old. Since most of the books I have are in English and I want to raise my child bilingual, I decided to get our nightly routine book in Spanish for more reinforcement. It is great, he recognizes the book that we read in English, and I can read him in my native language helping him become a bilingual child.

This is a wonderful bedtime book, both for parents and their children. I like the board book especially because it helps the younger ones feel a part of "reading" and hold the book which lasts a bit longer in that it is more sturdy. It is a special story for a special time in the evening and creates a cozy connection between parents and their kids. I raised all three of my "babies" on it and buy it for anyone I know who is having a new little one. The stuffed bunny is a fun addition.

This Goodnight Moon Bunny is our daughter's favorite Lovey.......2007-01-11

We received this book/plush bunny set as a gift. We love the Goodnight Moon story, and read it almost every night. Our 8 month old daughter, while she thinks the board book is delicious, has adopted the 5" Bunny as her very favorite Lovey, and won't go to sleep without him. He is just the right size for an infant. He has a grey faux-fur head and "hands", and wears blue-striped pajamas with textured feet. His eyes are the bead-type, rather than embroidered, but they are very well attached. The ears are long enough to get into her mouth for serious sucking, and the arms are well-stuffed, making for good gnawing. His body is stuffed with the microbeads, and my only complaint (thus 4 stars, not 5) is that he is labelled "surface wash only". I have, due to the daily baby-spit, given him many baths, and he seems to dry out just fine.

I absolutely love reading this book to my daughter. I've read it so many times, I practically have it memorized. I had never heard of My World which is the last story featured in the collection, and I wasn't too impressed with it as I was Goodnight moon and Runaway Bunny. But oh well, for the price I believe its a pretty good deal.

A bit of a let down.......2007-01-17

Be warned, this is not a repeat of Goonight Moon.

I guess it is hard to duplicate a masterpiece.

Still this book is an enjoyable bedtime story regarding the simple life of our favorite bunny family circa the 1930s-40s. The illustrations and writing to not compare to the orignal, but there is not much out there in children's literature which can. Still this is above average storytelling and my children enjoy it and that is all that really matters.

Disappointing Sequel.......2007-01-09

This little book was touted as the sequel to the classic "Goodnight Moon" by the same author and illustrator. While this book is all right, it does not reach the quality of prose of the original. Nor are the illustrations as detailed and interesting. I especially missed hunting for the mouse on every page.

I started reading this to my son when he was seven months old.

I understand why some of the other reviewers did not immediately love this book. The rhymes are not as simple and catchy as "Goodnight Moon". However, the overwhelming simplicity and sweetness of the book is captivating and grows on you over time. It is slow and gentle. My 2 year old son loves this book and my husband loves reading it. This is real literature for children and truly a great book.

A mostly different book.......2006-02-15

The art, author, and some images are the same, but My World is a disparate set of very short verses, phrases, and repetitions, and doesn't share cohesiveness, cadence, or placidiy with it's better known "companion" Goodnight Moon.

On the other hand, it's a very nice book, very pleasant, not as brief or calming but still a bit of both, and familiar enough to our son even on the first read that he quite enjoys it - and, i suspect, our daughter will too.

This is such a nice book. My sons 3 years old, and loves this one! It talks about how we must say goodnight to the sun so the moon can come out and how we must get rest for a new day. This is a favorite of mine also.

My Son Loves This Book.......2004-12-28

My son is 15 months old, he got this book for his 1st birthday. He loves to look through the book, but is not ready to hear the whole story. The flip feature of the picture of the sun is his favorite part. As you turn the pages the sun disappears from the right and the moon appears on the left. He loves to turn it back and forth and make the sun appear.

Super-sweet Goodnight Moon set!.......2005-08-24

This book and nightlight combo is absolutely adorable. It goes without saying that the book is a surefire hit with little ones, but I wasn't sure how the nightlight would be received. My girls ended up fighting over it because it was so appealing! Nightlight could be a little brighter, although I guess that's not exactly the point...I can't imagine anyone being disappointed by this set.

Four romantic stories that take place on the water! I enjoyed them all especially the first story "The Matchmakers" by Kimberley Comeaux, the story that takes place on a cruise ship with some quirky elderly ladies that plan to match their pastor up with one of the ladies nieces. Funny, romantic and touching!

Good Christian Fiction.......2001-09-14

I enjoyed the four novelettes in this book. However, there was not as much depth to them as one finds in a full novel. All had good witnesses of how God influences our lives and watches over us in times of trouble.
