5 out of 5 stars Pretty decent entertainment.......2006-07-26

I remember collecting Goosebumps when the first wave came out a decade ago. Ghost Beach was written around the time the series was taking off in popularity, but before it got saturated in merchandise and took a dip in quality. There's nothing goofy about Ghost Beach, it's a straight-forward ghost story with some decent twists here and there. It's also one of the scarier books in the series, along the lines of "Welcome to Dead House." Good for some safe scares.

I used to get scolded for reading too much Goosebumps and not enough "real" literature, but it's hard enough to get kids to read these days. Recommended for any paperback collection.

4 out of 5 stars GHOST BEACH.......2006-02-18

I would recommend this book to people who like ghost stories. This book is the second best book I've ever read. GHOST BEACH is long and makes you want to read more but don't read to much or you might forget to do your oral report.

5 out of 5 stars Goosebumps GHOST BEACH.......2005-09-28

I REALLY REALLY LOVE goosebunps!! They are easy so I wish R.L stine would write some thicker ones! I think this book was a 100% GOOD, so I want to read more. I like how Jerry and Terry are like real twins so they fight. BEalieve me I have twin brothers. Overall Goosebumps was GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Ghost Beach.......2005-07-13

this goosebumps was ok. i didnt really think it made sense when they said that ancient rocks in a sanctuary can block out ghosts. but i could follow the story. its about these 2 kids terri and jerry who are not allowed to go in this cave. then these 3 kids tell them there's a ghost living in the cave. the 3 kids want them to trap the ghost. youll have to read the book to find out what happens!

4 out of 5 stars Ghost Beach Is The Best Book You'll Ever Read.......2005-03-08

Ghost Beach is such an exellent book. When I read the back of the book I was thrilled! Read to see what happens in this story. This is about two children that go to their grandparent's house. They meet three kids while they go in a cave. The kids tell them stories about a ghost that lives in the cave. One night the kids go to the beach. They meet the kids again. The kids ask them if they would help them trap the ghost. They say yes. The rest you should find out by yourself.R.L. Stine wrote this book to teach us to listen to our parents or someone who takes care of you. You should tell your friends to be truthful with each other.I loved this book so much I couldn't put it down.It wouldn't leave my hands. This is the third best book I have ever read!

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2006-09-22

This book is so great! It is very scary in the beginning, but then towards the end it is sad! It is about a girl named Karen and her friend from NY, Ann Marie. Ann Marie visits Karen in LA for a month. The two girls meet two guys: Jerry and Marty and then their girl friends Renee and Stephanie. Some "stuff" happens to Karen...and she's scared! By the end someone dies...and another goes crazy! It is a great book!

4 out of 5 stars This is an excellent Book........2006-05-21

I really loved this book. I have read alot of R.L. Stines books and for the most they are fairly decent. Some however are on a more.. well non-realistic (for lack of a better term) stage then some of his better storys. This one is good but some of the characters tend to slid into the background to be forgotten about! I think that they should be longer. They are excellent books but they end in a big rush. That is how most of his books end in a big collage of different events. I have just recently read Gone With the Wind and the sequel Scarlet. After reading those magnificent books I find it very hard to read short books that just rap different things up at the end with no sequel. But for the most part I would give this story 2 thumbs up. I only wished that he would have made a little more dialoge and appearance with Vince. Everyone that is reading wants her to fall for the Bad Boy. Everyone loves to feel that danger and I think that it would have been a better attention grabber! Well sorry that it is soo long. I do hope this helps you when deciding. As for a description you can read the other entry's to find out what happened!

    Love always,
    A Northern Belle.

    4 out of 5 stars kids review.......2006-04-18

This book is about a girl named Karen who lives in L.A and she invites her friend Ann Marie over for a month from New York. Karen's dad isn't home at all for the month so the two girls are alone the whole time. One night they decide to go for a walk on the beach and run into some bad boys. One of them was a boy named Vince. Karen thinks she might like him untill a boy named Jerry and his friend save the girls. Jerry was nice, funny, charming, and he seemed to like her, until Karen met his girlfriend, Renee. Renee was very mean and she didn't like Karen. the next day at the beach, Karen and Ann marie ran into Jerry and Renee. Renee wanted to teach Karen how to snorkle but the only non-poluted place was by the rocks. Karen got caught in the current and yelled to Renee but she didn't hear her. Jerry saved Karen. The next day, Karen's old boyfriend, Mike ran into her at the boardwalk. Karen wqas freaked out because she thought he was stalking her. Vince rode up on his motorcycle and took her home. At a party Renee saw Karen and Jerry kissing. Then Karen went home and found jellyfish in her bed. She thought it was Renee. She went to Renee's the next day and found Renee dead. To find out who killed Renee and who Karen picks, read the book.
I didn't like this book as much as I like some of R.L Stine's other books. I thought it was going to be more suspenceful and I thought there would be more deaths.

5 out of 5 stars Keeps me thinking & one of the greates books ive read.......2004-03-23

I usually don't read books that often, but this one was worth time. It kept me hanging every time I stopped reading and twisted surprises popped up through out the story especially the end. You would never had guessed jerrys dead brother, todd, would posess Jerrys body, or was it just Jerry and his hurt mind....
Anyways, this book was a great thriller that kept me thinking about what would happen next and always would put the story on different tracks to confuse people. I think it should be little bit longer though...

    5 out of 5 stars A very entertaining read.......2004-02-19

I was, like alot of teenagers, an R.L Stine fan and pretty much had all the point horror books. But i must say this is the best one and still an entertaining read. I strongly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Still in my mind all these years later.......2007-07-07

This was the first 'scary" book I bought by myself. I wasn't supposed to read scary books so i had to sneak it at night when my mom was asleep. I still remember how scared I was while I read it. It is a book that I will never forget. Because of this book I went on to read almost everything by R. L. Stine and Christopher Pike. Enjoy this book it really is a good one!!!

    4 out of 5 stars Beach House.......2007-05-29

I think that The Beach House by RL Stine is an excellent murder mystery book. It kept me on edge with book in hand, with a surprise at every turn of a page. You can really think about what's going on. In the parts of the book when it is set in the fifties, I read about the "modern" furniture of their day, which would seem really old fashioned to people today. One example of that would be when Lucy and Kip go into the beach house and see the fifties furniture and laugh about how old it is. This made me laugh too, and think about how times and styles have changed over the years. Boys and girls in middle school would deeply enjoy reading it, for the suspense keeps you hooked until the end.

3 out of 5 stars O.K. But not that great!.......2007-03-02

R.L. Stine, switches about every 30 pages back and forth from two time periods. This Summer and Summer of 1956.
In 1956 maria, Amy, Ronnie, and Sturat played a mean joke on a guy named Buddy. He doesn't like it.In fact he hates it so much he could kill...
In this summer Ashly has a crush on Brad, but she doesn't know he might be a killer...
I hated this summmer but I sort of liked 1956. So I guss that evens it out to 3 stars.

3 out of 5 stars why does everyone like it so much?.......2007-02-28

i just read it, and i DID stay up till 11:40 on a school night just because i could not not finish it, but it wasnt amazing. i mean what was up with the hot cold hot cold thing all the time! it was incessant...i was like okay i really dont care if the waters that warm or cold or whatever...the one thing towards the end was that i started imagining all the characters as characters in a nancy drew computer game so that was kind of entertaining. i mean it was alright but seriously, not THAT amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Summer of Murders.......2007-02-16

Beach House by R.L. Stine is a very good book. It has a ton of suspense. There are a few people who get murdered because they teased someone. When I read this book, I never wanted to put it down. Each chapter ending in suspense and kept me wondering on what will happen next. The only thing that confused me was that each part they switched from different time periods. In the ending however those two time periods came together and it made sense. I loved this book a lot. If you like suspense and horror novels, you should read Beach House.

    Book Description

As one of the most popular vacation spots in the world, the Grand Strand sparkles with life and activity. Yet beneath the sparkle, there are cryptic shadows-a chair that rocks by itself, perhaps moved by the spirit of a young man who took his own life after his love spurned him; a flickering light in the window of an abandoned house, a beacon to guide home a captain lost at sea before the Civil War; a monument cursed by an old woman accused of witchcraft. Ghost hunters consider the area from Murrells Inlet to Georgetown one of the most haunted regions on the East Coast. Blanche W. Floyd has collected the tales that intrigue and frighten locals and tourists alike. From the well-known Murrells Inlet apparition, Alice of the Hermitage, to the ghosts that frequent Old Gunn Church, the Grand Strand teems with legends of pirate treasure and lost Indians, of fierce battles and killer storms, and spirits unwilling or unable to leave the Grand Strand.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not much boo for buck here........2003-07-30

Blanche W. Floyd obviously loves the Grand Strand and she is most certainly well versed in its folklore. She also has a pleasing writing style and if you are looking for a book of the legends that have built up in that area of South Carolina this will definitely be a book you will want to read.

On the other hand, the title makes this book appear to be a collection of ghost stories and if that is what you are looking for, stay away. There are only three stories that really deal with purported hauntings out of a total of twenty-nine. Of those three, two of them are about Alice of the Hermitage and the Gray Man, well-worn stories that are in almost every book dealing with southern ghosts. Most of her stories brush off the whole possible ghostly aspect of the legend with a sentence like, "It is easy to imagine, when the fog rolls in and the tall grasses wave in the breeze how one could see..." Even most of the legends are less than notable. For example, we get the legend of Drunken Jack, which is an interesting story, the first fifty or so times that you hear it. But anyone who has ever visited this area has heard this story at least a hundred times and has no need to spend their hard-earned money to hear it yet again. Worse yet, the old joke about the drunk in the graveyard gets included in this book as a Grand Strand legend.

I think the real problem with this book is that the author doesn't believe in or even have an open mind about ghosts. There was no going out and interviewing people who would tell her about the time that they saw a strange light here, there, or yonder. This book is just a simple retelling of old legends that Mrs. Floyd has probably heard all of her life.

In all fairness, if you have never been to South Carolina or the Grand Strand, this book might just be of help in giving you a feel for the place. If you want good, creepy, and scary ghost stories however, look elsewhere.

      The A-list bites.

Jason Freeman has gotten used to the fact that beneath its glamorous surface, DeVere Heights is full of unexpected secrets. And vampires. Then just when he thinks he's golden, he's attacked. With a crossbow.

At first the attention Jason gets from his crush, Sienna, makes the wound almost worthwhile -- especially after she breaks up with Brad. But the crossbow-wielding lunatic isn't finished, and his next victim is found dead with a bolt through the heart.

As tensions rise at DeVere High, suspicions about the attacker point to pretty much anyone. There's something cold and hard in Brad's eyes-the look of a killer? Nah....

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Beware the Hunter.......2007-06-21

Jason Freeman has mostly adjusted to living in vampire-infested Southern California. Jason loves a vampire, has vampire friends, and even some in his family tree. He's pretty accepting of it all. But then he finds himself with a crossbow bolt sticking out of his chest and in the hospital. He is luck to be alive. But there are others who are not as lucky as him. There is another attack and the victim does not survive. Suddenly the community finds itself in a bit of a panic. Special investigators arrive to try and catch the new serial menace.

Jason's non-vampire friend is convinced that there is a modern-day vampire hunter in the are. Jason becomes convinced but the local vampires claim the Hunters died out centuries ago. There are some more attacks and theories are all over the place. The investigators don't seem to be getting any closer. Jason is convinced the vampires are not taking the threat seriously enough. But eventually events unfold and the killer is revealed. To find out who and how you will have to read the book.

This is working out to be a pretty good series. Surfer vampires is a nice twist and the author handles it well. With each book we learn more of the characters and the society. This one has a good mystery and is well paced. Readers with a good memory for the earlier books might piece the story together a little faster. If you liked the first two volumes then you are sure to enjoy this one. Check it out.

5 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-03-15

Jason's in a world of danger, at least according to the psychic at the fair his sister forced him to attend. Jason scoffs at the idea, but after an afternoon at the beach filled with surfing and volleyball, he takes her warning more seriously. Alone on the beach, he's attacked, shot with an arrow from a crossbow.

At first, he believes it to be just an accident, but when vampires start dying around him, Jason decides to uncover the truth behind the murders. Who is attacking vampires in town and why did they go after him? His buddy, Adam, believes a vampire hunter is responsible for these attacks.

Jason must not only suffer through the recovery of his wound, but also personal rumors floating around about him and newly single Sienna. Can he handle all the stress in his life?

VAMPIRE BEACH is an addicting series that will leave readers wishing for the next installment. RITUAL is the third book of this vampire series (following Bloodlust (Vampire Beach) and Initiation (Vampire Beach)) that takes a bite out of the "Gossip Girl" lifestyle.

        Book Description

The Mayflower Building was the tallest apartment building in the state when it opened in 1951. It is a coveted residence with few vacancies, and many people, once they get settled in, remain there until they take their last breath. Apparently, some stay even longer.

Abounding with the bizarre behavior of elevators, the numerous deaths of inhabitants and paranormal sightings by a writer in residence, "Mayflower Apartments," represents just one of the extraordinary tales that Al Chewning documents in his latest book.

By delving into the creepy, unexplored avenues of Virginia Beach's past, Chewning entrances the reader with the spectral details of Blackbeard's buried treasure, a deadly stretch of road inexplicably responsible for eighty-nine fatalities in the past thirty years and the untimely death of a military wife, devilishly titled "Don't Make Mom Mad."

In a collection of forty stories gleaned from newspapers and personal interviews, Chewning sheds an eerie light on the prosperous tourist hot spot that is welcoming by day, otherworldly by night. A long-time resident of the Virginia Beach area and the owner of Ghost Tours of Virginia Beach, the author tells not only of reported sightings but also of his own spectral encounters.

From a "wailing woman" in the old Coast Guard Station to supernatural activity provoked by the association of two friends, Chewning offers up spine-tingling apparitional tales that will shock and delight visitors and locals alike.

        3 out of 5 stars A mix of not-very-scary stories and filler.......2007-02-13

That pretty much describes this book. The not-very-scary stories are a mixture of 1st and 2ndhand stories that never pack any kind of punch. The whole book has a very desultory, almost bored tone. But I wouldn't have rated it so low had not the first chapter been on that most over-used staple of mediocre ghost books, Blackbeard, who relationship to "Haunted Virginia Beach" is non-existent. The Witch story was even more ludicrous and written as if it were 100% TRUE.

A few as-told-to original ghost tales do not a ghost book make. Another thing. I don't know what printing process was used for this book, but it literally stank. Sorry! I don't like rating a book so harshly but as a VA resident who has been to VA Beach, I was very disappointed in this book.

        THE A-LIST BITES.

Jason Freeman is stoked when his family relocates to exclusive DeVere Heights, Malibu. The in-crowd at his posh new high school is surprisingly friendly -- soon Jason's hitting all the best parties. He even meets the token hot-but-unattainable girl.

Determined to enjoy his almost postcard-perfect new life, Jason tries hard to ignore the many strange things going down in DeVere Heights. But then a girl washes up dead the morning after one off-the-hook party -- and with no explanation but a suspicious-looking bite mark. Now Jason has to admit that what you don't want to know can hurt you.

1 out of 5 stars So little plot, so little action.......2007-07-11

What kind of vampire book takes over half the novel to introduce vampires?!? Bloodlust, the first in the Vampire Beach series, by Alex Duval, is a rambling, contrived story of rich kids in Malibu with only a hint of the action and mystery promised on the back of the book. Overall, I found the story relatively boring, difficult to follow, and overly frustrating.

The story focuses around Jason Freeman who has recently moved from Michigan to the super-elite neighborhood of DeVere Heights in Malibu. Jason is quickly accepted into the inner clique of his school because he is cute and a great swimmer. He even makes great friends with the hottest and most powerful girl in school--Sienna. Oddly, Jason also befriends an outsider named Adam, who, in contrast to any high school I have ever heard of, is accepted by the cool kids without a hint of disagreement. (Where's the teenage angst? Where's the Breakfast Club-style clique wars? In short, where's the conflict?) Jason gets invited to raging parties, dragging along his sister (who seems like a total throwaway character, by the way), and flirting with random girls. Eventually a dead girl washes up on the shore with, you guessed it, bite marks. Now Jason and Adam are on the case trying to track down the mysterious vampires in the perfect Malibu community.

To begin my critique, I'd like to start by saying that I am a great fan of YA Lit and I was really looking forward to this book. However, the problems I encountered really drained the life from me (pun intended). First, it takes forever to get to the vampires. I mean, FOREVER! Duval wastes so much time describing the parties that he seems to forget to build the narrative to support his plot. Second, while the backdrop setting is a standard locale for many current YA novels and CW television shows, the author seems to be trying too hard to reference current trends to make connections with most kids. For example, Duval writes that Alex tried to "eye-TIVO" every detail of his new surroundings. Later, one of the girls calls Alex and "Absolut cutie," referencing alcohol ads that were so five years ago. Third, once we finally get to the vampires, Duval does little to build suspense. Caution to the reader, here. What follows may contain mild SPOILERS: The girl who dies is such a bit character, I felt zero empathy for her. It may as well have been an anonymous dummy washing up on the beach. I thought it was going to be Jason's sister or something that would make me care. The same can be said about the various characters who are accused of being vampires. They are not well-constructed early in the book; therefore, there is no reason to really care at the end. Even Jason himself is such a stock character I cared little if he lived or died at the end.

I bought this book as a special edition that included the first two books of the series. I was excited to introduce my students to a book that combined the seductiveness of the OC with the haunting feeling of vampires. I was sorely disappointed. The characters are poorly conceived, the story is boring, and the quality of the writing is contrived and, well, poor. If only a pack of werewolves would pounce on DeVere Heights before people are stuck having to read another adventure in Malibu. Let's hope for a full moon.

4 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2006-11-13

I like vampire stories. If you've read any of my other reviews, you might already know that. Because of my prejudice, I dove into the first in the series of VAMPIRE BEACH books with high expectations. And I did enjoy it. Yes, it has some problems in execution, but more about that later. First the good stuff.

As BLOODLUST begins, high school senior, Jason Freeman, has just moved into an exclusive Malibu subdivision with his sister and their nouveau rich parents. He experiences the typical teenage angst: the girl he likes is taken, he can't have a good time at parties because he's always watching out for his younger sister, one of his new friends isn't exactly riding the top rung of the social ladder, etc. The usual stuff. But something seems a little odd in Malibu. Then a girl turns up dead, and Jason discovers that the popular crowd at his high school is made up of vampires.

This book put a fun spin on both the traditional vampire story and the "high school popular crowd" story. I stayed up late, turning pages to see what would happen. That's a good sign. When I was done with BLOODLUST, I was grateful that there was another VAMPIRE BEACH book on hand and I tore right into it.

Unfortunately, BLOODLUST did have some problems that detracted from my enjoyment. First, it was too short. There was clearly a lot of stuff going on in Jason's high school, but relatively little of it was explored. When he discovered the vampires and began learning about them, I ended up with more questions than answers. And by the time the real mystery began, the author seemed in a hurry to resolve it. Seemingly, no sooner did Jason realize there was a problem than it was solved. That was a letdown. I wanted more investigation, more conflict, more story.

Another thing that bothered me was the use of slang. The author was eager to portray authentic-sounding teen dialogue, but it seemed forced and, at times, outdated. That is often the problem with trying to write the way modern teens speak. By the time the book is published, the dialogue already sounds like it was written about two centuries ago. And be warned that this one is for older readers. It contains frequent references to alcohol use and some sexual activity.

I found VAMPIRE BEACH: BLOODLUST to be an enjoyable, light read. No deep human truths will be revealed, but there is plenty of good, old-fashioned, escapist fantasy. This slender volume is the perfect companion for your next plane trip. It should keep you entertained all the way from check-in to baggage claim.

4 out of 5 stars The Malibu Vampire Scene.......2006-08-30

Jason Freeman's Family has just moved from Michigan to an exclusive neighborhood in Malibu. Jason is thrilled even if his younger sister has her doubts. Things go well at first as Jason quickly makes friend, makes the swim team, and falls in lust with a beautiful rich girl. But then he notices some odd things. For instance, everyone raves about a party he thought was mediocre. But then after a party on a boat, one of the guest turns up dead on the beach.

The death is tragic enough but one of Jason's new friends shows Jason evidence that he thinks a vampire is involved. And not just one. He suspects there is a whole clan of bloodsuckers in Malibu. Jason does not believe at first until he comes face to face with the truth. There are vampires in the area but they don't kill. Now there is a rogue suffering from bloodlust who cannot keep control. While the rogue is about, no one is safe. Can Jason find out who is the villain and save the day?

This is a fast and fun books. The vampires and stuff do not appear for the first half as Jason acclimates himself to the new life but it really sets things up for how everything works. There is a pretty good-sized cast in this one so you have to pay attention. Although the bad vampire does kill a victim, this is not really a horror story. Jason and most of the characters are quite likeable. I don't know how many books are going to be in this series, but this is a very good start.

This book is different that other books that i have read. When i bought this book i didn't know if i would like it or not, but as it turns out i really really like this book. I shows how sometimes moving away from what you know and what you think you know can be a good experance until you find out their secrets. One event in this book makes everthing come together as it should. Alex Duval is a marvellous author and i can't wait until i read Book Two of Vampire Beach: INITIATION. It sounds just as good as this one. I hope to see more of Duvals work on Vampire Beach...
