Practical and worthwhile, even if you aren't a member of the FDNY.......2007-04-08
It is widely discussed in fire service circles that this text is an amalgom of FDNY tactical bulletins and other internal documents, such as Ladders 3 and Ladders 4. If so, it offers useful information for fire problems most of us routinely encounter. The 3rd edition has hideously tiny print and is over run by wordiness, but does have additional chapters on WMD issues as well as townhouse/garden apartment fires. There is new text intersprised all through out the book. Norman is a tough read - passive voice, run on sentences and double negatives - but the material is still worth digging through. And hey, the bulding classification codes from the 1st and 2nd editions got corrected.
A must for any working firefighter.

I found this book to be very informative. It helps answer the "what if this happens" questions that every firefighter ponders when they have time to reflect. I definitely recommend picking up this book whether you are an actual officer or firefighter.

This book is full of valuable information, and has helped to fill in some gaps in my understanding of certain firefighting tactics that I simply have not learned in my five years in the fire service. This book simply has more valuable, pertinent information than any other fire/rescue text I have ever read. Incredible!
The books only flaw is the photos are of very poor quality.
It is full of a great wealth of knowledge and insight. Awesome text, very easy, interesting read.
I highly recommend this book.

Despite regional variences in tactics, this book will expand your understanding of your current SOP's and allow you to try something new with a proven record. This isn't just a book. It's a life or death Rescue and Survival manual that's long overdue for the Fire Service. It's excellent and defines what RIT and preparedness is all about. Rick and Bob know the dynamics and commitment of what it takes to succeed by experience and it's reinforced in black and white. Make no mistake, this book doesn't leave off at just RIT from the hands on "team" but it covers, in detail, the full scope from the chain of Command. Respsonibility and ability is what makes any evolution successful and there is no doubt these guys know what it takes. Anyone who is serious about learning RIT needs to have this book. Do yourself a favor. Buy it!!

On September 11, 2001, Captain Terry Hatton (called by his fellow FDNY firefighters Captain Man-Hatton) entered Tower One of the World Trade Center. This is a great Bible. I bought it for my husband for Christmas and he loves it! I had it engraved with Gold, which makes it look even better. It is nice and small so he can take it back and forth to work with him. He loved it!

This Bible is very beautifully bound (nice red leather)and has a lot of cool extras. I was not familiar with the "Holman Standard Bible" before...it is written in layman's terms and is very easy to understand. However, if you are wanting an original translation like the King James Version than this Bible should probably be a supplemental Bible rather than your mainstay. Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase and the Bible is much better looking then the picture portrays. My husband, who is a firefighter, is really enjoying it.

Great handbook.......2007-03-06
This is a great resource for firefighters. I went through the fire academy and spent the past few years using IFSTA Essentials to study with. I found the Firefighter's Handbook to be much more entertaining and enlightening. The chapters read alot easier and seem to be written for firefighters rather than students. It's loaded with more fire service history and many more tips and tricks of the trade than essentials. Highly recommend it.

I found this book very useful. This is an excellent introduction in fire fighting and rescue. In my country (The Czech Republic) some drills, standard operation procedures and organization matters are different, but this publication is still very useful and inspiriting.

DO NOT buy this book if you are in Pennsylvania! The Commonwealth has created their own edition that is similar, but different than this. You will be frustrated in class trying to follow along with this version.

If you are a fire cause and origin investigator, you need this book! If you don't use it, you can bet an attorney will use it against you in civil or criminal proceedings. This book should be right next to your NFPA 921. DeHahn writes in a pragmatic and easy to understand format. I understand that the 6th ed. is getting ready for relase so you might wait a couple of weeks and get the latest. Bravo Dr. DeHaan, you've done it again!

The best book I know about fire; I like it for the strict scientific and pragmatic approach and the lot of practical hints, useful for a fire operator but also for a fire student.
Reading it, I understood a lot of things I watched in my 20 years of firefighting, and it changed my perception of fire behaviour and my understanding of a post-fire scene analysis.
A great help, and this edition is a lot better than the previous I had, the 3°.

I bought this book as a step in investigating fires and arson steps of investigation in writing a novel. It does have a lot of good information, but it's very generalized--not specific. Good for the amateur fire sleuth that wants to get enought information to be able to 'talk the language.'

This is a great book to read to get back to the basics. If you need to buy the book because the author is your instructor,then do so. If you want to learn how to make sound, prudent decisions as a firefighter, purchase John Norman's "Fire Officer's Handbook." The difference between the two is like reading Dr. Suess and Shakespeare.

I bought this book to prepare for FDNY exams. While I have not taken the exam yet I found this book helpful to prepare me for the test prep tutorials that FDNY offers. The book is too general to prepare you fully for your local exam. Check with your FD for prep classes specific to that department.

Look for a book that is for your part of the country. I found out the hard way that there are different tests for certain areas of the country. This book will help in reading and diagrams that pertain to Southern California.
