Book Description

Scott Faraday is sixteen and has no idea that his world is about to radically change. Scott is fun-loving, in a small-town rock band, and out—but only to a select few.

Isolated in a high desert town, Scott doesn’t know anyone else who is gay. When Ryan St. Charles, a troubled 17-year-old, moves to Yucca Valley, Scott’s world tilts on its axis.

Ryan is a brash seventeen-year-old who has just severed a long relationship with a man, but still considers himself straight. As Scott and Ryan’s friendship develops, Scott begins to suspect that Ryan might be covering up that he’s gay. When Scott comes out to Ryan, their friendship is transformed into his first real relationship.

Tightly focused on these two characters, Desert Sons follows the thoughts and emotion of the ups and downs of a young adult gay relationship. Filled with first-time wonder, teenage angst, and the swirl of emotions that can only be expressed by youth, readers are pulled headlong into a highly-charged drama.

“In Desert Sons, Mark Kendrick has provided all the ingredients of a good book: solid characterization, a compelling story, and a skillful evocation of place. All in all, Desert Sons is a wonderful read, realistic and moving. Highly recommended.”—Guy Willard, author of Foolish Fire and Mirrors of Narcissus

2 out of 5 stars I've read better.......2007-07-15

This book starts off really good, but then it just becomes very repetitive. Every chapter Scott tries to get Ryan to have sex with him again. Ryan says no, but then ends up caving and they screw. And after a while it's just the same crap over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Time flew by while reading.......2007-05-14

I love it when I pick up a book and don't realize that two hours have gone by! That is what this book did! It keeps the readers attention and moves at a decent pace. All in all, an excellent read!

5 out of 5 stars Wow..........2007-03-27

This is one of the best books I have ever read. I am recently been getting into other kinds of novels besides fantasy and I am pleasantly surprised by how good the story was. It is a book I will continue to read regularly. GREAT JOB!

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Book!.......2007-03-16

This book is absolutely fantastic. It keeps you yearning for more as you get to the end and at the end you are satisfied, yet there is a sequel!?

This book depicts a tale of two boys from two very different worlds finding and falling for each other. through thick and thin they stick through it, and are glad they have each other.

5 out of 5 stars A rich tapestry of desire and destiny.......2001-07-10

Rosalind Lewis believed her connection to her husband's family ended when he died years ago. Her attempt to contact the great-grandfather of her child was cruelly rebuffed, and she resigned herself to forgetting both the man she loved and the family she never knew. So when Sheikh Najib blasts into her life claiming her son is in danger, Rosalind considers him too late -- about five years too late.

When the three cousins follow a bank notice of payment due to a safety deposit box, they don't expect to find two envelopes including a will and a letter to their grandfather. The will leaves their deceased cousin's holdings to his wife, Rosalind Lewis, a woman they've never heard of. Najib follows the paper trail to London, but security demands that he not reveal the entire story that requires his intervention in Rosalind's life. Now he must persuade this justifiably angry woman that her son's in danger and only he can protect them both.

With equal respect to the ancient power, found in standing stones and odd corners of the world, and the exotic, the land of sultans and political assignations, Alexandra Sellers creates an extraordinary romance. THE SULTAN'S HEIR condenses a multi-layered plot into a deftly woven tale short on pages and long on complexity. As each secret reveals yet another layer, the reader is drawn into a rich tapestry of desire and destiny. The first novel of the Sons of the Desert trilogy, THE SULTAN'S HEIR comes very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars romance and intrigue.......2001-07-07

Alexandra Sellers has again taken us into a world of romance and intrigue. Rosalind wants to protect her son, but is not sure from whom, and Sheikh Najib is not sure Rosalind is who she says she is. But both know they are strongly attracted to each other. This sets the stage for an entertaining story, with undercurrents of passion. Set in London and East Barakat, the book held me in its grasp from beginning to end.

5 out of 5 stars A nailbiting romance that takes you into another world........1999-11-02

I don't know what it is about this author but she has the knack of capturing the mystery of the Middle East in a way that is sweeps you right up in it. Her characters are so recogniseable that you relate to them completely. They may do things you think you wouldn't do but it's always completely understandable. Her eye for detail brings these foreign worlds alive. I look forward to her next book.

Book Description

The incredible story of a 3,000 mile bicycle trek across the world's largest stretch of sand--the Kalahari and Namib Deserts of Southern Africa. The author relates his fantastic experiences--stalked by lions, charged by a herd of elephants, and his encounters with poisonous snakes, to name a few. He also tells of his numerous observations and experiences in living and teaching in Botswana for three years. These include his marriage to the daughter of a local witch-doctor.

5 out of 5 stars A "true" adventure........2000-12-18

Across African Sand is a an excellent example of what true adventure books should be. I emphasize the word "true" not simply to point out that events in the book are factual but to distinguish this work from books describing stunts. (To me a stunt is a once-in-a-lifetime event, filled with harum-scarum that a more skilled traveler would have avoided and usually detailing a significant departure from the main stream of the writer's life.) By contrast, Across African Sand comes across as the logical continuation of Phil Deutschle's career as a teacher and introspective traveler. Prior to embarking on his solo bicycle ride across the Kalahari and Namib deserts, Deutschle has spent three years living and teaching in an out-of-the way village in Botswana. An accomplished linguist, he has become fluent-to-conversant with several local languages, including that of the !Kung (Bushman) people, and thus we learn more of African life and thought than we would at the mercy of a more casual traveler. Deutschle clearly enjoys the company of the various people he falls in with along the way but also relishes the solitude which is such a significant part of his journey. Part of the success of the book is its skillful interweaving of events in the course of his cycling trek with flashbacks to his life as a teacher in a traditional Botswana village. Dimi Press has done a creditable job of putting the book together and its illustrations are great. I wholeheartedly recommend this as an interesting and insightful story of travel and adventure.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for bicycling enthuaists........2000-06-05

Across African Sand: Journey Of A Witch Doctor's Son-In-Law is the true life adventure story of Phil Deutschle's bicycle trip across 3,000 miles of African landscape. Along the way Phil was stalked by lions, charged by a herd of enraged elephants, fell in love with (and married) the daughter of a prominent witch doctor. Across African Sand is a compelling, engaging, fascinating biographical travelogue that relates an account of Phil's five years in Botswana (southern Africa) told in the form of flashbacks while he bicycles over the harsh Kalahari and Namib deserts, negotiating difficult African terrain, including soft sand and mud, during the course of his three month cycling adventure. Across African Sand is highly recommended for bicycling enthusiasts, armchair adventurers, and anyone who has ever yearned to travel the world, meet new people, and have adventures of their own!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, exciting reading!.......2000-05-04

This portrait will also fit neatly in travel sections: itportrays a bicyclist's journey across two deserts as he bikes throughsand, dodging lions and elephants and visiting remote parts of outback Africa. The adventure and observations of life in Botswana make for an excellent and exciting read.

5 out of 5 stars Advernture for Armchair Reader.......2000-04-28

I bought this book for my husband. While he was reading it he kept interrupting my reading to tell me about what was happening in his book. In self defense, I picked it up as soon as he finished and immediately found myself transported to Africa. This book is much more than the story of the author's trip across the Kalahri on a bicycle. He writes about the people he meets and tells of their culture, the politics and economy of each group. He possesses interpersonal skills that allow him to relate to all sorts of people quickly and he writes about them with affection and respect. He describes plant and animal life along the way. Through flashbacks he tells of his earlier life and recent experience as a teacher in Africa. During the lonely stretches of his trip he wonders about his need to wander the globe. My husband said when he finished the book, "I've learned more about Africa from this book than all of the other books on the subject, put together" I agree, and I learned a great deal about life in general and men in particular from it.

5 out of 5 stars an unread review.......2000-03-24

I think that Phil Deutschle is a wonderful author, having to put up with all of that stress of how to fit in time to writ after or at the time of his experiences. And just being able to adapt to a community so quick ; but at the same time working.

    5 out of 5 stars Sheikh's Castaway : Sons Of The Desert.......2004-11-24

I am a avid follower of this series since day one and this book followed my expectations of this author. It is a short read, entertaining, and I find this series of Sheikh books to follow the ability to weave in other characters from books which helps the series pull together. It was a good spin on a new idea, and for some reason I cannot pinpoint, is always worth my money, something others writing in this theme may not always be. I would highly recommend this book to those of you waffling on the edge, and I think enough of this series to keep them all and collect them, rereading them from time to time.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Read.......2004-11-09

This is the first time that I have read this author and I bought it because I enjoy this line of books and tend to like Sheikh stories. This was a quick read, as most Harlequin's are, and the characters have a very compelling chemistry for each other that they try to deny. This author takes this story to a stranded island and so it is just the two characters for almost the entire book, not an easy thing to do. For the most part, it was very good. I am giving this 4 stars because that means "I liked it" (as opposed to the 5 stars means "I love it"). I did have two complaints while reading, the small one is that a fairy tale is told in the book, and although I saw the point to its usage, it was a little too long. But, this wasn't that big a deal. My biggest complaint about this book (and the reason I didn't give it 5 stars) is that because it is a Sheikh story, the story contains another culture, and the author uses several foreign words, that were not always easy to discern their meaning from the context, and the author did not include any definitions in the story. I did like this book and recommend it because of the strength of the characters and also because the things that bothered me may not bother others.

Perhaps a night of passion would conqure all doubt!

3rd in the Sons of the Desert: The Sultans series

4 out of 5 stars Exotically dazzling -- Highly recommended.......2001-09-11

carefully orchestrated plot brings together chance and opportunity, leading actress Dana Morningstar to playing the role of a lifetime. When she and Sheikh Ashraf initially meet at fund raising event, sparks of attraction become transparent to onlookers when the Sheikh kisses her in front of a room full of people. Despite the sizzle, they both walk away, never anticipating another encounter.

Then her sister calls and Dana agrees to meet the men who hold her sister's gambling debt. She lacks the funds to pay the debt huge debt herself, and refuses to ask their father and risk the shock of his youngest daughter's behavior leading to another heart attack. Now Dana has orders to help these men collect a supposed debt with the Sheikh by informing them where and when they can serve a subpoena. Further, Dana has her own agenda with the Sheikh, and what she plans to say to him is not on any casino owner's agenda.

Author Alexandra Sellers once again demonstrates her masterful storytelling skills, weaving together the gilded world of privilege spanning two continents with extraordinary characterizations and a marvelous plot. The elaborate world of fund raising and gambling where extravagant sums change hands creates a dazzling background for this unlikely love story. The clash of culture and values results in an entertaining tension, thereby presenting a plot both impossible yet highly probable. An intriguing web of deception and lust, SLEEPING WITH THE SULTAN comes highly recommended.

    MARRIED TO THE ENEMY

She'd awakened in a hospital, confused, to discover she was mother to a newborn... and wife to a steely-eyed stranger. Mere hours after gazing on Ishaq Ahmadi in London, Anna found herself attheir desert home, which seemed both hauntingly familiar and oddly foreign.

No evidence of a happy marriage existed in the palatial residence. No photographs. No clothes that fit Anna's slender build. No trust, given Ishaq's endless questions. There was simply the primal, passionate connection between them... and, of course, the baby.

But Anna soon learned that nothing about her marriage was to be believed...

[6th in the Sons of the Desert series]

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic series.......2003-08-07

Once again Alexandra is giving us more of the background with this 6th. book in the Sons of the desert series & it is fantastic. I can't wait to start the next on which comes under the subtitle of The Sultan's & The Sultan's Heir being the 7th book. I hope this series of books never ends, I am really well engrossed with them.

    Please keep them coming Alex.

5 out of 5 stars Intrigue and passion are great combinations!.......2001-10-17

This is a great story that keeps you wondering if Anna and Ishaq will get together despite all the road blocks they face. It's a great mystery & romance story with twists & turns to keep you from guessing how it ends until just the right time. Alexandra Sellers is really good at making the characters real. I'm really enjoying her Sons of the Desert romance series! I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I have! :)

5 out of 5 stars Yummy new Sons of the Desert story!.......2001-02-11

Anna wakes up in a hospital with a baby beside her and a gorgeous husband she doesn't remember. Next thing she knows, she and the baby are being spirited off to the beautiful Barakat Emirates and a life she can barely remember. It's obvious she left her husband, but she can't understand why. And her husband tells her a different story every five minutes. When the truth finally dawns on Anna, it's too late!

This story is exotic and erotic and full of mystery and surprise. And Anna's strange, haunting dreams just add to the wonderful romance, making you think that these two were destined to love.

This is another in Alexandra Sellers' Sons of the Desert series, and if you haven't discovered it yet, you'll be thrilled.

5 out of 5 stars Very emotional story.......2001-02-02

I found it very moving. I've already read it twice. It is a story with real emotional pull, and it made me cry both times. Anna is strong, but she has a past that gets in the way. She is also a lot smarter than the hero gives her credit for. But he learns! And the hero (giving his name would be a spoiler) has an agenda he can't explain, too. This is the first book of this mini-series I have read, but now I want to get all the ones that came before.

I just love this Sons of the Desert series. There are three brothers, each of them has his own kingdom. This one is the third in the series, and there are two more after it. I love them all. This one is really nice, Prince Rafi is sooo romantic and special. He falls in love with Zara at first sight and then has to convince her. But she gets kidnapped, so before he can convince her, he has to rescue her! I hope there are going to be lots more in this series.
