5 out of 5 stars Bowed Lower Legs.......2007-09-10

Steve Ditko's art work was an acqired taste for me. His old people all looked Asian, his girl's were too thin, and his adversarial figures had
bowed lower legs. That said, he was more adventurous than King Kirby, es-pecially when he tackled Dr. Strange. Ditko was perfect for that strip,
but his breakthrough was the early Spider-Man, and for that, I will always be grateful. Get this one, if you're young. Compare it to the
masturbatory, nihilistic issues of today, and come to your own conclusions, if you can.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING! SPECTACULAR! SENSATIONAL!.......2007-08-28

Simply put... If I was stranded on a desert island and I could have only one book... this would be it. Quite possibly the greatest run in comics history. These are not only the best Spider-Man stories ever, they're some of the best comic stories... PERIOD. Stan Lee's writing is fun and upbeat with a great sense of comic timing and adventure. Steve Ditko's pencils are tight and bursting with kinetic energy. (Definitely the best work of his career). Even though I have all of the original issues, as well as the Marvel Masterworks collections of these stories, I still bought this book. It is loaded with extra goodies, like all of the letters columns and some early guest appearances of Spider-Man in other comics, such as, his first team-up with the Human Torch in Strange Tales Annual #2. However, it's the attention to detail that really makes this collection shine. The publishers even went to the trouble of exactly matching the colors to the original comics (i.e. in the first few issues the blue in Spider-Man's costume looks purple, just like it did in the original printings). It may sound cliche, but the bottom line is, if you are a Spider-Man fan or just a comics fan in general, this book is a MUST HAVE!

Marvel did a good job on creating this book. If you are a spiderman fan get this book, you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars A must for all spidey fans!.......2007-07-24

I bought this with trepidation. All I can say as I hold the book in my hand is that the production is very good, coloring is excellent, bind quality is good - we need to see if it will last a few years. I wish they bring to print- Captain America from issue one to the current; Daredevil and Iron man from the first issue to the current. Last but not the least I wishy they bring out extinct super heroes- The Web, Steel Sterling Man of Steel, The Hangman, The black hood, The Phantom and Mandrake in such volumes too.

5 out of 5 stars magnificent!.......2007-07-17

a pop-art masterpiece. i like spiderman: the only superhero who got superproblems. spiderman's first years are the best.

Life couldn't be more complicated - or more dangerous - for Peter Parker. After rushing to the aftermath of the Stamford Massacre to offer aid to its victims, Peter travels with Tony Stark to Washington, D.C., and the White House - where the enactment of the Super Hero Registration Act appears imminent. As the Marvel Universe braces for the implications of legislation that will forever change the societal status of super heroes, Peter is forced to make an important personal decision - maybe the most important decision of his life. As Civil War tears apart the super hero community, will Spidey stay true to that decision? Collects Amazing Spider-Man #532-538.

4 out of 5 stars Best of Marvel's Civil War TPBs.......2007-10-21

This trade paperback collects Amazing Spider-Man #532-538, written by J. Michael Straczynski and drawn by Ron Garney. Focusing on Peter Parker/Spider-Man's role in the Marvel Universe-encompassing Civil War, the story develops the quasi-paternal relationship between Peter and Tony Stark as the Civil War escalates. Peter's shocking public revelation in issue 533 was the first non-cinematic Spider-Man news in a long time to be covered by mainstream US media. As the conflict intensifies, Peter grows to question his siding with Stark and eventually hides with MJ and Aunt May in a decrepit motel room. The book ends with a cliffhanger that left me eager to read issue 539. Reading the main Civil War TPB is helpful but not essential as there is enough of an independent plot here for those interested only in Spider-Man.

5 out of 5 stars Spiderman at a Crossroads.......2007-09-02

Spiderman has always been my favorite Marvel charachter. I hand't read his book in about 20 years- way back when he first got his black costume during the Superhero Secret Wars. I recenly saw he was "Back in Black" and got curious for some backstory, so I picked up this and other Marvel Civil War tie-ins.

Great Story! The theme of government Superhero oversight registration and the secret of Peter Parker's secret identity are directly at odds. Peter has some serious soul searching to do and it tears him apart. Once you read this, you will want more.

4 out of 5 stars Spider-man cuts a fine figure in the major Marvel Comics Event.......2007-08-30

There are good reasons to sympathize with both factions in Marvel Comics "Civil War"--those led by Iron Man and those led by Captain America. But when posed with the question "Whose side are are you on?" I have to stand with the Amazing Spider-man. Where most of the other heroes allow the conflict to quickly degenerate into a fist-match aimed at sticking it to the other guy, Peter Parker is ever willing to reevaluate the situation based on new information. As always, his character is compelling because of his ongoing need to find out what is the right thing to do, and then doing it, no matter what it may cost him.

Constrained by the massive crossover plot of the Civil War story arc, writer J. Michael Straczynski's doesn't shine quite like he has before, but is nevertheless an asset to this major "Marvel Comics Event"; the core storyline just seems to ring a little hollow without Straczynski's fleshing out of Spider-man's perspective. Ron Carney's art is good--the webslinger cuts a fine figure in both his new and old costume. There's some good action sequences with Spider-man fighting against either side ... and we also see more of the unmasked hero, Peter Parker.

4 out of 5 stars SPIDERMAN IS GOOD.......2007-08-18

OPTED FOR THIS ABOVE PETER PARKER TIE IN SO ONLY ONE SIDE FOR THIS REVIEW.I LIKED THIS STORY BUT AFTER ROAD TO C/W AND THE MAIN C/W STORY THERE ISNT MUCH LEFT TO TELL.DOES LET YOU SEE A BIT MORE ABOUT PETE DECIDING HIS FATE AND HE ENDS UP FIGHTING EVERYONE,SO NO REAL PROBLEMS FOR ME.THE BEST PART IS THE "LONG" ENDING THAT KEEPS YOU WANTING TO GET TO THE END,JUST GOOD WRITING I GEUSS.CANT WAIT TO GET THE NEXT TPB IN THE SPIDERMAN SERIES,DONT TELL ME WHAT HAPPENS!!!!SHAME SPIDEY GETS RID OF STARKS DEADLY OUTFIT,THOSE ARM THINGY'S ARE PRETTY COOL

4 out of 5 stars Great Read - One of the Best in the Series.......2007-07-23

The Civil War series had great stories and flops - this is not a flop. The Spider-man story line is one of the best to read since it digs so deep into the personal life of a character most of us know pretty well. Spidey ends up going back and forth throughout the story which really keeps things interesting. Pick it up if you are a fan of Spidey or the Civil War story.

2 out of 5 stars It's In Black and White.......2006-12-29

Somehow I missed the part where I was informed the book was in black and white. Major disappointment. The lack of color is a big deal. Be warned. Hey don't get me wrong, I love Spider-Man. He's my favorite but I'm letting people know that the book is not in color. I would think that that would be a good thing to know before anyone buys it.

2 out of 5 stars decay happens........2006-12-28

When Stan Lee bowed out, Gerry Conway took over. Then a young talent who struggled to find his place in the marvel universe. His writing was stiff and clunky. Of course the death of Gwen Stacy has some drama but "worm eating scum" is hardly clever writing. John Romita continues with Gil Kane and some others who prove impressive in style. I like Kane quite a bit. While his sketchy style and inability to render a face are problematic, his layouts are brilliant and he really unstiffens John Romita's art. However when Ross Andre took over, it was a serious decay in quality. Andre is a competent artist who tried to maintain the style of John Romita but that's it. Otherwise it's abismal to see both John and Stan leave Spiderman to far less talented people.
Storylines are mediocre at best. The death of Gwen could have been handled with much more drama and a long-term storyline but instead Peter is linked to Mary Jane. The reason for the death of Gwen was due to both John Romita and Gerry (and Stan at times) finding Mary Jane far more interesting to work with. Oh if they understood.

5 out of 5 stars Spidey at some of his BEST and worst moments!.......2006-11-11

Once you get past the black & white pages (there is much to be said about how color enhances comicbook artwork), the Marvel Essentials stories really manage to pull you in.

Volume 6 has some of Spidey's best storylines ever in Amazing Spider-Man. The pinacle would have to be the character defining two-parter with the Death of Gwen Stacy at the hands of the Green Goblin. Powerful stuff even 30 years later. Other classic villains make appearances as well from Doc Ock to The Tarantula to the Molten Man and Hammerhead and the introduction of The Punisher and The Jackal. Of course there's also some rough spots in the reading like the plotline that had Doc Ock marrying Aunt May...shudder...silly...but keep reading and you'll find a good time with every turn of the page.

5 out of 5 stars Two Goblins, a Death, and LOSTA EXPLOSIONS!!!.......2006-07-22

One of the BEST Spider-man Essentials, I gotta say...the stuff in here is GOOD! We open up with a couple issue arc involving Aunt May, Doc Ock and Hammerhead, move over into the Destroyer story, a two-issue Spidey and the Hulk BEAT-'EM UP in Canada, then KAPOW!! The Green Goblin returns, kills Gwen Stacy, turns the comic book universe into the dark side of the moon, and subsequently dies at his own hands (later retconned in...that...clone saga...ugh...) And from there it's a riptide of friends, foes, and heartache all in the classic Spidey fashion! From Man-Wolf to the PUNISHER (cough cough) to the Tarantula and the Molten Man, to the return of Liz Allen and the Vulture's sickening schemes, Doc Ock and Aunt May's marriage (WHAT??!!!), all concluding in a nice little, innocent two issue story where we learn (Although they build up to it for about 14 issues) that Peter's best friend has gone insane, rigged himself in the kooky outfit that Gwen Stacy's killer wore, and threatens to destroy everything Spidey holds dear!
Well now, the writing of this milestone in Spidey history is okay, I liked Stan the Man better, but Conway takes up the stead all right, although killing one of the nicest characters in the Spidey mythos makes him branded for sure. This begins with Gil Kane's art, which is now (thankfully) a LOT better than his TERRIBLE run from Spidey #99-105 (He did alright in the issues before that...doesn't make sense) and slowly moves in to Ross Andru's art which I actually like EXCEPT for when he once drew Mary Jane...yuck.
All in all, this is a great collection that any Spidey fan should surely add to their collection.

4 out of 5 stars Disregard the Gil Kane tirade..........2005-09-15

He is considered by many, including myself, to be one of the GREATEST comic-book pencillers EVER. The man has a point- it IS generally accepted that kane's faces are some of the worst in the biz... they seem to have "snouts," I kid you not - but his layouts, composition, and anatomy (don't know WHERE that guy gets off) are brilliant. In fact, I find Kane's spidey to be one of the best renditions of the post-silver age, and LOTS of people seem to agree... and spidey doesn't even HAVE a nose while in costume, so Kane's facial eccentricities don't even come into play as it concerns our favorite web-headed wallcrawler. Jeez, the gall to dis GIL KANE...?!?! Next we'll be hearing how "terrible" Ross Andru's work was, and how "flawlessly rendered" Frank Miller's initial attempts at Spidey were...sheesh!
If anything, the WRITING is pretty weak and dated in these stories... I gotta go with the guy who was talking about Morbius being one of the most ridiculous spidey villains EVER! But classics are classics, and this is as classic as they come, so if you like spidey, pick it up already!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT!.......2007-09-29

I purchased this collection for my father as a gift. HE LOVES IT!!! He owned many of the original Spiderman comics when he was a child and living on a military base in Japan. When my grandfather was stationed back in the U.S. my grandmother made him leave them in Japan.
This is a great gift for any true Spideerman fans or anyone who wants to get familiar with the actual comics. :)

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Fantasy for any Spidey Fan!!!.......2007-07-30

An irradiated spider bite, a tragic twist of fate, a poignant proverb; over the years there have been numerous attempts to re-tell or re-interpret Spider-Man's origin. With some of them being successful and others not so much, any Spidey fan's best bet is to actually read the original Lee/Ditko comics in all their grandeur. The Marvel Masterworks series provides Spider-Man fans with this exact opportunity. Important to note - unlike some trades that compile these comics in black & white, in this collection, they are all in magnificent COLOR!

This particular volume, Marvel Masterworks: The Amazing Spider-Man Vol.1 consists of Amazing Fantasy #15 (Spider-Man's first appearance) along with Amazing Spider-Man #1-10. This volume provides a great window to explore the original and definitive origin of Spider-Man with the introduction of his supporting cast, including: Uncle Ben, Aunt May, Flash Thompson, Liz Allen, Betty Bryant, and J.J. Jameson. We also see first appearances by classic villains, such as: Chameleon, Vulture, Doc Ock, Sandman, Lizard, and Electro, along with lesser known foes such as: the Fantastic Four's Doctor Doom, the Terrible Tinkerer, the Living Brain, and the Enforcers. Spider-Man also runs into some allies, with the Human Torch making multiple guest appearances as the webslinger's teenage foil.

Overall, the strength of these stories is Stan Lee's revolutionary concept in re-defining the traditional characteristics of a superhero. Unlike the morally perfect, father-figures that had dominated comic book pages for decades, Peter Parker was a socially awkward teenager who reflected his youth-oriented readers. Reading these early comics, we witness what is to become the trademark of Peter Parker's life: problems. From girl issues to money woes to his physically feeble Aunt May, it is Peter's personal life that remains the emotional core of his stories. While other heroes have the ability to retreat into their secret-identity, Peter's personal life is only more complicated by his newly earned powers and responsibilities. It is this aspect that made Spider-Man the most relatable superhero. Steve Ditko equally contributes to the success of the wallcrawler by making Spider-Man's world stand out with unique visuals, quirky costumes, and greatly depicted battles, particularly the classic showdown with Doctor Octopus.

Like all older comics, there is some dated dialogue that doesn't translate well into the vocabulary of the 21st century. There also is a tendency for Spider-Man and his villains to verbally narrate every action they engage in. However, the joyful and emotionally compelling nature of these stories diminishes these flaws entirely. This is a must have for any old or new Spider-Man fan!

5 out of 5 stars What a Comic book collection should be!.......2007-02-03

That's what I call a great comic book collection! It just covers the earlier adventures of the Amazing Spider-man (#1-10 plus Amazing Fantasy #15) and the episodes'arts and scripts may not be as entertaining as some on the further issuses but still this collection remains a classic of its genre and is functional to the full understanding of the super-hero character Spider-Man.

5 out of 5 stars Modern Mythology in the Making.......2006-10-29

For people who love comic books this is a nice thing to have. See how the Amazing Stan Lee started out his most popular creation. This book begins with Amazing Fantasy # 15 where Spiderman made his first ever appearance then goes on to present Amazing Spiderman # 1 - # 10. It includes Spidermans origin and goes on into battle with some of Spideys' most enduring enemies from Doctor Octopus to the Lizard, to Electro, Dr Doom and the Sandman. Spiderman even battles the Fantastic Four. The book even includes a small introduction by Stan Lee. The Marvel Masterworks series sits really well on the bookshelf next to the DC Archives sets. Collect books from both publishers and build a nice library of Superhero Mythologies.

5 out of 5 stars In the beginning..........2006-08-20

There isn't much about Spider-Man that the average earthling doesn't already know: nerd bitten by a radioactive spider, first appeared in Amazing Fantasy #15, lost his uncle and, oh yeah, "with great power comes great responsibility".
But there IS more to know.
In the beginning Peter couldn't catch a break with a webbed mitt. He lost his job, his girl and his self respect almost every day. Ah, high school, remember? And if that wasn't enough, he blamed himself so much for his Uncle Ben's death that he HAD to go out there and beat up Doc Ock, the Lizard and an endless array of diverse villians - even if he had a test tomorrow!
The stories are legendary but so is the art. If you have never seen the work of Steve Ditko then I envy you the new experience. His quirky characterizations just fit the mood of our arachnid misfit. It is safe to say Spidey's adventures would never have touched so many of us geeks and outcasts had he not been rendered by Mr. Ditko.
If this is new to you then enjoy. The only way it could be better would be to be in high school again - but who needs that?!

Book Description

J. Michael Straczynski is a man who has made his mark in many ways whether in the world of science fiction and television with the hit Babylon 5 or in the comic book industry with such books as Rising Stars and Midnight Nation. Now his unique vision comes to the world of Marvel and the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man! Joining Straczynski is a man of equal legend -- John Romita Jr. Regarded by many as the definitive Spider-Man artist of the last decade, Romita's unique pace and superb storytelling perfectly complement Straczynski's vision.

Amazing Spiderman is amazing! I guarentee that if you read the first issue of this series you will not be able to put it down until it is finished!

5/5 - story
5/5 - artwork (John Romita Jr. never fails!)
5/5 - great dialogue!

This series will make anyone a spiderman fan!

5 out of 5 stars Impressive, read them all.......2006-06-12

Through reading these and other recent Spider-Man books (25 issues worth) one thing comes to mind: even through bad stories, Spider-Man is still the man. It may be controversial but I like the idea of Ezekiel, Morlun, the Spider totem, all of it. Spider-Man has to be changed up every once in awhile and this is a much better way to do it then killing people off, or a new costume. As Straczynski's run goes on he shows a new side to Spider-Man/Peter Parker, MJ, Aunt May, even Uncle Ben. Spider-Man is firmly in the Marvel Universe in this series, with random comings and goings from other heroes. On the other hand, Peter Parker is firmly in the real world during this run. Peter Parker in college has been tried before, but Peter Parker (as an adult of course) in high school? Well, that's different and incredibly entertaining. The new villains are memorable and the older cast reminds you why you loved them to begin with.

4 out of 5 stars This is good stuff people!.......2005-10-20

As Spiderman stories go, this is tight. Straczynski's writing is excellent. He gets Peter's babbling and his narrative is strong. The introduction of Ezekiel is excellent and he provides mystery to a series that I often feel is lacking mystery. As always, John Romita Jr's artwork is excellent. He is one of the most underrated artists in the biz. His work is strong, always dynamic, and never unsure of itself.

This is good storytelling, people. Pick it up!

4 out of 5 stars The Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1: Coming Home.......2005-10-04

I'll admit it, I've always favored good old Spidey over most other super heroes. And, well, anything J. Michael Straczynski writes turns to gold, so I was expecting big things.

Stracynzki's Spider-Man has been a superhero for quite a while, so he's fairly confident in his routine. None of that "Peter Parker learns how to deal with his newfound powers" jazz. What's so interesting about this volume is that, rather than questioning the origin of the hero, it questions the nature of his powers.

Ever thought about the villains that the webslinger has had to fight over the years? Doctor Octopus, The Rhino, The Vulture, other such animalistic fellows. As the mysterious Ezekiel tells Peter, "the kind of enemy you get tells a lot about the kind of person you are." So Spider-Man is the totemistic reflection of all spiders, and his enemies are all pretenders. Interesting stuff.

What follows is some standard (if not well done and drawn) action, balanced well with the light moments the comic is known for. Not exactly straying from formula, but I enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars The beginning of J. Michael Straczynski's awesome run.......2004-10-24

When Babylon 5 creator and Rising Stars scribe took over writing duties on Amazing Spider-Man, he did something that hadn't been done to the title for years. He made it amazing again. Straczynski introduces a new spin on the Spider-Man mythos in Coming Home, in the form of the mysterious Ezekiel who wreaks havoc on the web-head's life. And, as Peter discovers, there is more to his origin than he had ever thought. After years of some lame storylines (clone saga anyone?), Straczynski re-injected the magic and awe into the title, while at the same time putting his own spin on the classic Marvel character. Not to mention the superb art by legendary John Romita Jr. gives the book an ultra slick yet classic look, and fans of his work over the years will surely marvel here. All in all, while Ultimate Spider-Man may try to re-invent the web crawler mythos, it's Amazing Spider-Man that is really the defining Spidey title (Mark Millar's Marvel Knights Spider-Man title is also worth checking out), and any of Straczynski's works on the title is definitely worth your time.

4 out of 5 stars It all came down to a betrayal? Story's done; time to start the next one........2007-01-22

As with almost all of Spider-man stories I have found enjoyment and always looked forward to the next one.(I'm a longtime Spiderfan and easy to please). Ezekiel had always been a mysterious, almost immortal figure since popping in to Parker's life. This chapter sums it all up very well, but I was disappointed with the ending. It felt like everything in the last several books culminated to this chapter and now there doesn't feel like there is anything on the horizon for Spider-mans legacy or the Parker's family, although I know better. Perhaps Ezekial will be Peter's Obi-wan Kenobi in future issues. In a way it kinda seemed like J. Micheal Strac. was unexpectedly running out of pages and had to "wrap it" up. Still, I was very pleased I bought this one and it again as I do will the previous chapters (yes--I read them all in order too! LOL).

5 out of 5 stars A happy Birthday?.......2006-09-21

Story: After a frusterating day at work, Peter Parker a.k.a Spider-man is just reflecting on his superhero identity and about if he's actually a hero when red lightning strikes. Er.. Red lightning? Never a good sign. So then Spidey goes on a search for the source of the problem and when he finds it, it turns out to be WAY more then a bad rainstorm. It's a limitless army of, really strong, really tough and really stupid drones. Plus, soon Spidey finds out there's an ultimate battle going every freakin superhero in the marvel phonebook and the mindless ones. But when a Mr Fantastic invention goes haywire and a Dr Strange spell gets messed up, Spider-man ends up seeing his beggining, his end and also he ends up facing every super villain he's ever faced and has to beat them all in a weakened state. To find out the conclusion you've gotta read this graphic novel. Also with a bonus 2 comics added to mix it up you'll really enjoy the story.

Art: 3 words, Looks-Really-Good.

value: while it's a little pricy, with the right amount of cash or a library card you'll get satisfaction garunteed.

Overall: Overall this is an awe some book and I reccomend this to any Spidey fan who can read.

5 out of 5 stars The Book of Ezekiel.......2005-05-03

This is a great arc. First off the story begins where Spider-Man teams up with Loki!! It's not what you think. Your thinking that the Daily Bugle was right about Spider-Man and now he has turned to Loki's side. Nope. I think you'll be pleasently suprised.

Then we have another arc that ends the saga of Ezekiel!!

The artwork is great!!

The srory is great!!

What are you waiting for?!?

Unless Peter Parker decides to pen his own autobiography someday, you're not going to find a better guide than this to the life and times of your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. From that fateful radioactive bite in the science hall up to Spidey 2099, DK's Ultimate Guide recounts all the career milestones--major and minor--of Stan Lee's web-slinging wall-crawler. Organized and authored by Tom DeFalco, former Marvel editor in chief and the series' bestselling author, this guide pulls together the storyline's many twists and turns (chronologically, by decade) and devotes big spreads to nearly every noteworthy ally, friend, and villain (with one curious omission in the Shocker). Special sections cover episodes like the alien costume, the regrettable clone saga, and the wedding to Mary Jane, while panel after panel of original art (over 600 images in all) flesh out the action (a particular treat with the corny old dialogue and art).

DeFalco makes some small missteps--inevitable in any fan-boy project--and certainly The Ultimate Guide will feel dated as the series evolves, but as a comprehensive guide, it just doesn't get any better. Throw in a foreword by the inimitable Stan Lee, and you've got a book that would make even Peter Parker proud. --Paul Hughes

"Spider-Man: The Ultimate Guide" is a must-have book for all the wall-crawler's fan! It has information about lots of characters and a fantastic spidey's time-line! The illustrations are as good as well, and you can even find information on alternative Spider-Man series, like Spider-Girl, and Spidey 2099. Although the book is very nicely done i still missed more detailed profiles, anyway you will sure not regret for buying this one!

5 out of 5 stars Spider-Man: The Ultimate Guide.......2005-06-22

Tom De Falco's comprehensive SPIDER-MAN guide is one of my favourite spidey books, covering everything from the comic's origins in the 60s to the recent movies. With some great insight into the characters in the world of comics and good layout, this guide tells you all you need to know about Peter Parker, Mary Jane and assotment of villians (Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Venom et all). DeFalco's extensive research has paid off, making this an essential addition to the already bookshelf-breaking collection of comic book guides. This is a must-have book for any SPIDER-MAN enthusiast.

I never read a Spider-man comic book, but I wanted to know all about Spidey, his allies, and his enemies. This ended my search!

5 out of 5 stars A great resource for any fan of Spidey.......2004-12-16

I have been a rabid Spider-Man fan, reader, and collector for the past 13 years. In that time, I've seen some of the best (1980's to 1993) and worst (Clone Saga) this hero has to offer. IN addition, I have collected every issue ever published. So, I'm very knowledgable about SPider-Man and his world. Still, this book is a delight to read. I didn't learn anything new, but it is well written, spectacularly illustrated with original comic art from some of Spidey's most legendary artists (Ditko, Romita Sr., Romita Jr., Frenz, Andru, Sal Buscema, Gil Kane, McFarlane, Bagley, Larsen). New fans will learn a lot from this book, but no matter how long you've been a fan of Spidey, this book is a treasure trove for you!!

5 out of 5 stars My kids love it!.......2004-07-22

We bought this book for our five year old who loves Spiderman, but our whole family has enjoyed learning more about the villains and other characters in Spidey's world. It is fun to learn the origin of characters we are familiar with and some we had never heard of before. There are lots and lots of illustrations to keep the kids' attention, and the stories and bios are interesting enough for adults as well. The binding has fallen apart on our book- which may have survived better under normal wear and tear- but that is mostly because my son takes it to bed with him since he loves this book so much. Overall, a great book for kids and adults too.

5 out of 5 stars Marvel Vs. Reality.......2006-07-05

When it comes to comic books, Marvel has the little breathes of reality that gives the reader a feeling that a world with superheroes would be like this. Unlike DC and other complete escapism comics, Marvel touches the soul of the hero. Heroes fail. Normally, they fail in more ways than one. Spider-Man lost the love of his life when he could not save Gwen Stacy. The X-Men are hated and hunted down just because they exist. This is what makes Marvel unique. The "What If" of our world reflected in their world. When 9/11 happened, Marvel had to incorperate it into their universe. New York is the base of many of Marvel's superhero and to just act as 9/11 never happened would be Marvel's lose of their uniqueness. In fact, it would have been an insult to those who suffered in 9/11. Marvel could have had a Superman-like character save the Twin Towers, but it would not ring true. Like everyday people, heroes fail, but like everyday people, they help where they can. In Marvel's interpetetion of 9/11, the heroes were all those who tried to help. Many of those heroes are those who really did save the day. To the Everyday Heroes and to America, the Marvel Universe feels the pain and fights to protect all freedom, even if they cannot save us in this reality, their fight lives within us all.

4 out of 5 stars The Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 2: Revelations (2002).......2005-08-14

This volume begins with a 9/11 tribute that, while touching, seemed really out-of-place. If the sad truth is that comic book heroes aren't real and therefore can't actually save the world, then they don't belong in such serious situations in the first place. I do respect Straczynski taking a creative risk, but this was going a bit too far. Just one panel with Captain America silently standing helpless would've communicated the same message far more powerfully.

Other than that, this volume manages to be as compelling as the last. Aunt May, after collecting her thoughts, confronts her nephew about his true identity. When Peter admits that he could've saved Uncle Ben if not for his selfishness, he finally receives the forgiveness he's always wanted but has never been able to ask for. Sentimental stuff, and an interesting new direction for the Spidey mythos.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Spidey.......2004-11-30

I was in New York in 9/11. I was in the WTC on September 8th; I was buying a book from the book store that used to be in the mall. I, like millions of other Americans, feel very close to the events that took place that day. I tear up whenever I hear Tori Amos' "I Can't See New York." And I cried when I read this piece.

I am a big fan of Straczynski. I love Babylon 5, I think "Rising Stars" is brilliant, and I think his work on Spiderman is breathing fresh life into an old book about a teenager who in the wrong hands would have aged without grace. I think the "Happy Birthday" TPB is very, very good. But this is better. The single word, "God..." over a stunning rendering wide shot of the tragedy by John Romita, Jr. catches in your throat, and the rest of Peter's interior monologue is equally appropriate. Captain America's sadness, Magneto's willingness to help, and the respect paid to the firefighters are among the many highpoints of this unique issue.

Now, everyone has talked about how good this issue is, and I've just echoed that, but I would also like to point out how note-perfect the rest of the TPB is. The actual arc of this book is about how Aunt May finally finds out that her Peter is the reviled Spiderman, and how she comes to terms with that.

There are some comically beautiful moments, like when Peter is trying to figure out why Aunt May sounds so upset (he thinks maybe she's dying), and when Aunt May says she is relieved to find out that Peter isn't gay.

JMS also needs some props for writing Aunt May so well. There's a very touching scene, where Peter admits that he could have saved Uncle Ben, and Aunt May forgives him. This scene was sort of in the movie (#2), but it works so much better in this book. In the movie, Aunt May gets mad, but you get the feeling that she's wrong -- she shouldn't be mad at him because scrawny Peter, as she knows him, couldn't conceivably stop a full grown man (a criminal!). In the book, she knows he is a superhero and she knows he could have, SHOULD have, done something, but because she is a wise and loving person, a traditional grand dame from the greatest generation, she gives him the forgiveness he has always wanted but has never been able to ask for.

In short, any self-respecting Spidey fan should own this book.

5 out of 5 stars Aunt May helps both Peter and Spider-Man with their problems.......2003-04-29

"Until the Stars Turn Cold" is the third trade paperback collection of issues of Volume 2 of "The Amazing Spider-Man," currently under the creative auspices of writer J. Michael Stracynski and artist John Romita, Jr. (inks by Scott Hanna). At this point in the developing narrative Stracynski has already dropped his two major bombshells that establish the new and improved Spider-Man in the previous two collections: in "Coming Home" Peter Parker discovers that his powers were not the result of a random radioactive spider bite but that he is, in fact, the avatar of the Earth's spider population, and in "Revelations" Aunt May confronts Peter about knowing he is Spider-Man.

Basically, in "Until The Stars Turn Cold," which collects issues #40-45, two things happen. First, the dust is settling from the aforementioned revelations (Aunt May gives JJJ a piece of her mind regarding her new perspective on his Spider-man vendetta), and Peter is finally getting around to doing something about his estrangement from Mary Jane. However, this is complicated by the second set of things which happen within these pages, namely a set of three-issue battles. The first is with a new villain called the Shade, and requires the help of Doctor Strange, Master of the Mystic Arts. The second is with Doctor Octopus; actually, this would be Doctor Octopi, since there is the original Otto Octavius and a new, younger, leaner, meaner, version. Of course, both conflicts thwart Peter's endeavor to reconnect with his wife (so what else is new?).

Although there are some echoes from Volume 1 in terms of the time there were two, count them, two Vultures, what Stracynski and Romita are really doing with this second story arc is their own homage to what I consider the greatest Spider-Man story of all time, in "Amazing Spider-Man" #31-33 (yes, even over the first two issues down by Romita's father when the Green Goblin learned Spidey's secret identity, the three drug issues with the Comic Code seal of approval, the death of Gwen Stacy, the wedding to Mary Jane, the death of Aunt May the first time around, or anything else you want to name as a possible alternative). If you have access to that story, which also involved Doc Ock, then check it out before or after you read these stories so that you can appreciate the resonance of the old within the new.

As a homage "Until the Stars Grow Cold" is not bad; we do not have Aunt May on death's door this time around, but we do have here constantly being cute as the dickens when it comes to dealing with her knowledge about Peter being you-know-who. Actually, the part of Stracynski's writing that I find myself enjoying the most is his wry sense of humor (which becomes pretty blatant in terms of the movie Mary Jane is making out there in Tinsletown). We will have to wait and see how this avatar of the spiders thing turns out, but Aunt May knowing (and Aunt May knowing that Mary Jane knows that she knows) is turning out pretty well. It would have to, because it changes a major element in the dynamic of the comic book.

5 out of 5 stars Very good.......2003-02-03

J. Michael Stracysnki is a fantastic story-teller, and the artwork by John Romita, Jr. is really good. If you like Spider-Man, you will really love this.

4 out of 5 stars Small on plot, big on action.......2001-05-03

The Trapster, Titania, Graviton, the Rhino, Magneto, the Incredible Hulk, the Shocker, the Brothers Grimm, Hydro-Man, the Super Soldier Eliminator, Goliath, Dragon Man....Spidey takes them all on single handed - and decks them - in this entertaining trade paperback. True, it's just a series of epic battles with little plot, but who cares when you get to see Spidey blasting Titania through a truck and punching the Hulk into orbit? This is action-packed, and when I say action packed, I MEAN action-packed. New York is almost completely demolished by the climax.

If that wasn't enough, this book also features Doctor Doom, the Puma, the Red Skull, the Wizard, Loki and more in an adventure which sees the wallcrawler pick up some astonishing new powers, and forfill his destiny by battling the enormous Tri-Sentinel to stop it killing millions. Alex Saviuk, Erik Larsen, Todd MacFarlane and personal favourite Sal Buscema supply the artwork. Light, episodic, non-stop Spidey action.

4 out of 5 stars The best spiderman saga ever........2000-02-25

In this amazing adventure we find our freindly neighboorhood spiderman facing his toughest challenge as doctor, doom kingpin, Loki, and the wizard team up and send a variety of supervillins at spiderman hoping to confuse his and attack his weaknsess. This tactic almost works but spiderman is zapped by a mysterios burst of energy that give his almost god like power. Spiderman always felt a stong responsibility for having his powers now he stuggles with having more power then he can handel. I strongly recommend thisnovel to anyone who likes spiderman or any superpowered hero.
