Anyone who has managed the process of developing or redesigning a Web site of significant size has likely learned the hard way the complexities, pitfalls, and cost risk of such an undertaking. While many Web development firms have fantastic technical expertise, what sets the topnotch organizations apart is the ability to accurately manage the planning and development process. Web Redesign: Workflow That Works directly addresses this crucial area with a specific, proven process.
This brief but important book lays out a specific five-step strategy--called the Core Process--that can always be applied to the development of Web sites and fine-tuned to almost any type of project. Each step--defining the project, developing site structure, visual design and testing, production and QA, and launch and beyond--contains three related but distinct tracks. The text begins with a brief overview of each of the steps, then delves deeper into each with detailed explanations as well as specific forms and project-management strategies. This book does not cover back-end, server-side programming. Instead, it focuses primarily on the visual, conventional components of a Web site.
Authors Kelly Goto and Emily Cotler compiled this book in an attractive, easy-to-read format. This process guide uses numerous full-color screen shots to illustrate site examples, as well as plenty of site diagrams and sample forms. The book even has a companion Web site with downloadable forms in PDF format to put the Core Process into immediate action. --Stephen W. Plain
Topics covered:
- Step 1--Defining the Core Process: discovery, planning, and clarification;
- Step 2--Developing site structure: content-view, site-view, and page-view;
- Step 3--Visual design and testing: creating, confirming, and handing off;
- Step 4--Production and QA: prepping, building, and testing;
- Step 5--Launch and beyond: delivery, launch, and maintenance.
Book Description
If anything, this volume's premise--that the business of Web design is one of constant change-has only proven truer over time. So much so, in fact, that the 12-month design cycles cited in the last edition have shrunk to 6 or even 3 months today. Which is why, more than ever, you need a smart, practical guide that demonstrates how to plan, budget, organize, and manage your Web redesign - or even you initial design - projects from conceptualization to launch. This volume delivers! In these pages Web designer extraordinaire
Kelly Goto and coauthor
Emily Cotler have distilled their real-world experience into a sound approach to Web redesign workflow that is as much about business priorities as it is about good design. By focusing on where these priorities intersect,
Kelly and Emily get straight to the heart of the matter. Each chapter includes a case study that illustrates a key step in the process, and you'll find a plethora of forms, checklists, and worksheets that help you put knowledge into action.

Good Book .......2007-04-11
This book is a good intro into how to manage a website implementation or redesign from the prospective of a designer. I am not a designer, but still found the book useful because it does cover all the steps; not just the ones that designers are concerned with. The book takes a good approach and is easy and interesting to read.
The best treatment of the web design process around.......2007-02-06
I have my quibbles with this book, but they are all very minor. It could stand an update, but what web book over 6 months old couldn't. I have to give it five stars because it is head and shoulders above anything else.
Thoughtful yet a little dated.......2007-01-12
Despite being the best book I have read thus far on this topic, it's content now is a little dated. Certainly a worthwhile purchase, it outlines a typical site development workflow and now having deployed portions of this methodology in my workplace I know it works.
Great Guide for Web Redesigns.......2007-01-09
This is a good detailed process for designing and redesigning web sites. Great re-usable documents and worksheets to help you on your way. Details and describes the process very well with good examples.
Worth the buy........2006-09-28
I found it a very useful book, especially with all the downloadable forms. I felt it was a little light on user testing - but otherwise, very good. It felt a bit repetitive and that things were presented in an odd order sometimes, but it's still worth the buy.

Great resource.......2007-09-29
Just getting into the book selling biz. I have been going through cancer and now need a job where I can tailor my hours around all of my doctor's appointments. I like both this book and the Stephen Windwalker books. Very good information without alot of extraneous stuff.
Great Book.......2007-09-25
This a great book to help those interested in selling books online. It is very bold of Mr. Weber to enpower the competition. But it is a very smart book that will help those motivated to help themselves. I recommend it to all interested in getting online selling books.
The Home-Based Book Store.......2007-09-17
Very good book for the person who is contemplating entering this type of business. Seemed to cover most of the bases. If he didn't and I do actually go into business, I guess I'll find out pretty quickly. But, overall, since I've read a few other books dealing with this topic, I feel the author covered the subject matter well and I would recommend the book to others.
AWESOME.......2007-08-27
This is a fantastic book chock full of information. I've already started using some of his suggestions and am looking forward to having my own online used book store.
Home based book store reveiw.......2007-07-03
We are established home-based booksellers. When my husband bought this book I thought it would be to basic for us but I was pleasantly surprised. It was full of great and useful information. It would be a tremendous book to have BEFORE you set up your business. I think this would be helpful for anyone at any level that is selling books on the internet.

Buy the latest version.......2007-09-16
This book is useful when you are just starting an online business. Just make sure you buy the latest version so that some information is not outdated by the time you are ready to set up your online business.
Worth it's weight in gold if you're going online!.......2007-08-18
I just got this book last week and I'm not even done with it and have gotten so many 'nuggets' that it has more than paid for itself already! It's well written, easy to understand, organized extremely well for easy reference and full of helpful resources.
The section on 'Keeping it legal' saved me great error already (I was going to buy a domain name that could've infringed on a copyright) and I have found several free web builders online that are 10x's better than what I had been using. There's so much practical information in this book that I no longer feel guilty for buying it new.
This book is zero fluff, tons of examples and free or very reasonable resources, and lots of food for thought. The table of contents is so detailed that it makes for a quick reference (does anyone read a book like this cover to cover?) Greg Holden's writing style is personable and to the point and very easy to understand.
I truly don't understand all the reviews that say this book is no good, not sure what they have been reading, but I have no less than a dozen books of this nature, and this is one of the few that isn't 75% fluff. I'm somewhat of a website newbie, starting about a year ago trying to do my own website. It's alot harder (for me)than I originally thought and have tried no less than 6 different hosting accounts, 4 different online web builders, and 6 different web editing software trials (Expressions, dreamweaver, publisher, coffee cup, page spinner and frontpage). One of the best discoveries in this book was that Firefox offered a FREE...quality...web editor!
This is the 2007 edition, maybe people were referring to the earlier version of the same title. I have gotten way more out of this book than I thought I would. I guess I must be a true "Dummie". It's definitely worth your time checking it out if you are new to the online business world, you can always resell it on Amazon and recover your moola.
this one really is for dummies.......2007-08-05
One of the worst "For Dummies" books I've ever read. Normally, I'd rate for dummies books a 3 or 4.
Not worth it.......2007-04-19
You could do an online search and find more information than this book gives you. I did not enjoy and I returned it. It is broad and never really gives you step by step instrucions on how the webite actually works and how to create it.
very rudimentary, broad overview.......2007-04-14
People who use the internet regularly will not get much out of this book--it's no joke when it says "for dummies". Greg Holden does give a broad overview of the many aspects to starting an online business but even then the information is outdated and at some points, simply not accurate making you wonder where this guy gets his facts.
In an environment that is not only competitive but also changes rapidly it is important that you are equipped with the most up to date information. This book however, still proclaims AOL king and web sites using tables and frame "advanced". Although the book was published in 2006 (and in its 4th revision), it feels more like it belongs to the 90's.
So even if you are new to the internet and need a place to start I recommend you find yourself a different book.

Book is O.K........2007-06-11
This book was O.K. There were many ideas to choose from but only a few good ones. Plus, there isn't much information on each business. You could find more ideas and a lot more information for free on the Internet.
outdated.......2007-03-30
Book is now outdated. Is a good reference or starting point for the novice. Good introduction to where things have come from... Things have changed quite a bit since publication as they tend to do on the net.
101 Internet Businesses You Can Start from Home.......2005-10-12
Waste of Money...Don't buy this book its completly outdated and not a single business in 101 business listing is practical in today's life
More comprehensive than similar titles........2002-06-20
If you've ever dreamed of owning your own business but don't want to be tied down to a brick and mortar building, then this is the book for you. Starting an Internet business could not be easier with the help of the information provided. The book starts with interview information from three successful Internet businesses and then follows that with how to get your point across, the various formats for a storefront, required features of the successful storefront, payment options, and levels of e-business. From there it moves to helping determine what is important to you and how to use that to find the right business for you. From there it moves to the profiles of successful businesses. These profiles are complete with how to market the business, startup costs, skills needed, online examples, etc. It finally concludes with information on how to build your site, get it submitted to search engines, e-mail marketing, using links and pretty much just about everything that you need to know in order to get the business up and running.
Susan Sweeney, the owner of an international Internet firm, has produced a very thorough and easy to understand book. Probably the best book available today on starting an Internet business from scratch, it is a highly recommended read.

Very Comprehensive, Well-Written Guide.......2007-07-17
Mary Ellen Bates has created a very well-written, informative work that covers all of the salient aspects of starting one's own information services business - including those that someone looking into the field would never even think to ask about. Ms. Bates' writing style has a personal feel that is at the same time very professional. Her personality as a no-nonsense, savvy, and yet friendly information services professional comes across on every page.
The book really covers two important but somewhat distinct skill sets: how to start and run a successful business and how to be a successful information services professional. Ms. Bates' apt writing style weaves these two elements together quite seamlessly.
I suggest reading "Building & Running a Successful Research Business" cover to cover before spending your time reading any one of the more generic books available on the topics of how to find information online or how to conduct research. Once you have covered all of the bases with Ms. Bates' work, it would then be prudent to pick up some of these other works to dive more deeply into the areas where you need additional support.
An outstanding resource .......2007-01-10
Mary Ellen Bates is an internationally-known presenter on business information and research topics, however in this book she talks not about where to find information, but about how to build a business doing just that. The book is practical, inspiration, and actionable, but also makes it clear that the life of an information entrepreneur is not for everyone. A great resource for those considering this career path, or those already in it who need a bit of professional, albeit friendly, coaching.
Many Pages, Minimal Useful Content.......2006-08-20
There are a variety of approaches to starting a Research Business, and this book simply does little justice to providing business-smart content for doing just that. If you want to embark into a research business on your own, this might give you a vision but it will certainly not give you the business smarts you need to really start and manage your new business. Best to look into resources on starting a consulting business and other resources about starting any business.
Best of luck.
- Dissapointed
Finally -- a handbook that does what it says.......2006-02-27
So many "how to" books are filled with airy reiterations of the obvious or catchy but useless "10 Ways to..." Build and Running a Successful Research Business, on the other hand, is dense, useful, funny, insightful, honest and inspirational. A true page-turner in a genre that so rarely sees this caliber of writing or thought.
Great book on how information pros work.......2005-08-09
I bought this book hoping for tips on research, and I got what I wanted. I was also impressed by how this book was organized. It contains a LOT of information, and it seems to me that this information is all relevant and useful. If finding information and doing research is part of your career, this would be a good book to have. I'd also recommend it for people who are likely to hire information professionals.

Was an ok book........2007-10-20
I read this book and hoped to find several new ideas but I was very disappointed. I could not find a lot of new information in the book. Certainly the price tag is too high too.
Great addition, but take it with a grain of salt........2007-07-05
This is a great resource if you already sell on eBay, and are looking for a quick read. This book will NOT be helpful if you are just starting out on eBay, looking for product sources, or need a how-to manual of any sort. The author spoke with several Titanium Powersellers (the highest grossing sellers on eBay) about how they got started and what their business is like currently.
Personally, I thought the book was helpful for my own use. There were quite a few good ideas that helped us streamline our own business. We took an extra-hard look at sellers whose product line matched ours (small, light-weight commodity items) and tried to see if any of their ideas would benefit our business. There weren't any huge changes to our business, but the book helps us tweak our practice with small changes either taken directly from the stories, or inspired by the stores.
Here's the catch:
eBay is stagnating. Since the book was released, many of the Titanium Powersellers in the book have either closed down, moved off of eBay, or cut back drastically on their eBay listings. The successful sellers don't stay on just eBay, but diversify as much as possible, and the book doesn't mention cross-selling at all.
There isn't a whole lot of information in the book, but I do think it's worth the $15. But the true secret to becoming a top online seller? Start preparing to move away from eBay.
Another great book to add to collection.......2007-06-14
Another great book to add to collection of reference material.
Everything but the Sources..........2006-07-16
I purchased this book in hopes of understanding what I need to do in order to move from casual ebay seller to powerseller. I did find ways to increase efficiency and the names and websites for the companies that provide the software but I did not find how to join buying groups, which ones are best or anything else that gives me a "Turn Key" ebay business. I work on computers, build custom systems, and occasionally take a trade in. I found that there is a company that uses this as a business model and was able to get some limited ideas from this book. This is not the book that answers "Where do I get product at a price that will make a profit on ebay".
I am looking for the mother of all ebay books, something that gives me the sources to create a truly turn-key ebay store. I am buying all the ebay books I can find because I am dead set on becomming a power seller by September, 2006. This book has been a big help but it is not the holy grail.
Not a How to Manual but interesting.......2006-06-09
Not sure what I expected. Ive never read much about doing business on eBay but thought it was time. Interesting stories. The format is to give you pointers by telling the stories of successful folks using eBay and the Author does that. I didnt find it terribly helpful for someone starting out and that maybe wasnt the intent but it was informative. I found that you had to dig a little for the secrets, maybe as it should be who knows? But an okay read, worth the price.

book review.......2007-01-10
This book gives you a basic foundation to use in launching an ebay business. This is not a "pie in the sky" kind of book. It is "down to earth" and introduces you to all areas of ebay selling. I like the way it is an easy read, yet a very informative and detailed guide.
eBay Through Rose-Colored Glasses.......2006-12-19
A good introduction to eBay for hopelessly optimistic newbies but this relentlessly upbeat whitewash is only half--or more like a tenth--of the real story. And it's highly unlikely that anyone who's serious about making a living through online sales will need to bother wading through the rudimentary eBay For Dummies-style boiler plate info (writing listings, setting up a PayPal account, determing prime scheduling hours, etc.) that makes up much of the book.
For harsh realities about the true risks of doing business with this online auction behemoth (subjects either given short shrift or totally ignored by this Pollyanna-esque primer include eBay's insanely convoluted and arbitrarily enforced rules, impossibility of actually speaking to a knowedgable staff member when troubles arise, pointless form letters supposedly answering questions, company's high-handed my-way-or-the-highway attitude, etc., etc.), look elsewhere.
Such info won't be hard to locate--just find anyone who's been attempting to conduct business on this despotic site for, say, six months. . . and prepare to get an earful. But admittedly that would have been a different book altogether. And, needless to say, a much, much longer one.
I'm not .......2006-02-22
I sure am trying. Great tips, and hope to be atleast making a part time living doing eBay. It's alot of work, but it's also alot of fun. My photography skills have gotten better. Here is my "me" page, hope you like it. Proof is in the pudding:

Comprehensive!.......2005-11-19
Although I've been an eBay seller for over 7 years - and am featured in this book - I found much of value in this book's pages. Not only can you learn about selling on eBay, Miller provides some basic "starting a business" info which is useful, especially to the eBay newbie.

This book provides step-by-step guidance in starting an online retail business. There is a ton of information crammed into this book which is divided into six sections and many chapters:
1. In Business, Preparation is Everything
2. Getting Your Business Online
3. An Internet Presence for Existing and New Businesses
4. Promoting Your Site
5. Improving and Analyzing Your Site
6. The Experts Speak
As someone who has read many books on virtual businesses, online presences, Internet marketing, and online retailing I could appreciate all that the author covers in this book. Unfortunately I doubt someone with my background is the intended audience for this book. I think someone with less knowledge on the subject would be the person to want to read this book. And such a person is probably going to be disappointed with it.
I found the book to emphasize online retail businesses to the exclusion of online service businesses. That's fine and dandy if the title of the book had specified that the material related to "Online Retail Businesses." There was a lot of talk devoted to shopping cart aspects of Web sites and to eBay topics. If I wanted to read about eBay, then I would have picked up an eBay book.
My favorite part of the book was where the author at page 96 told me about how to easily add shopping cart functionality to a Web site that I had built using Microsoft Frontpage. Supposedly there is an outfit called Richmedia Tech that provides help in doing that.
The slant on the type of business the author was talking about in his book showed itself particularly in Section 4 regarding how to promote your Web site. There was no mention of writing articles, giving seminars, or becoming a public speaker which are normal ways to promote a Web site that helps market services rather than products.
If you are planning to use eBay in your business in ANY way, then I highly recommend you get a copy of this book. It is a great supplement to any reading you do on the subject of eBay. However, if your business idea or existing business has no need for an online retail storefront, then skip this book. There are other books available that are more on point for you to read. 4 stars!
This book gave me some new ideas for my On-line business.......2004-01-24
I started my own business and have been selling books online for over 5 years (and doing very well thank you), and I also volunteer in my free time as an outplacement counselor for a local non-profit training facility, so I have had a little bit of experience in business; and I have to tell you after reading the dreadful reviews I picked up a copy of this book just for grins... not! This book has some really good ideas. True there is no magic bullet, but that's just it, this book gives good direction and if you have a half-way decent brain and some ambition you will do the rest. My biggest problem as an outplacment counselor (whose job it is to help people to go out there and look for a job) is motivating them. I give them the direction but they want the easy fix. This book will not give you an easy fix, but if you want some good solid ideas ... read this book.
Complete Waste.......2003-01-13
The only thing to be learned from this book is if you have a catchy title and access to bookshelf space, you can sell anything, even 414 pages of filler.
Among the pearls of wisdom is the advice that you can compare features of different computer brands by shopping at your local computer store. I'm not kidding!
I was so insulted by the banality of this book that I was moved to write this review.
Don't Buy It.......2003-01-10
I bought the book on the strength of the excerpts on the back. It is a waste of paper. The information is shallow an very dated. It does not provide any valuable information, even the rhetoric is thin and pale. The "trends" are old guesses from the DOTCOM era. AND the "money saving techniques" are stale. And I figured this out and I'm just starting a web business. Try TechTV's Starting an Online Business. It's FAR better. Better yet try multiple books and do some deep diving on the web. You know the 3rd 4th and 5th pages when you do a web search. Good Luck.
Read this book. You might be the next successful entrepreneur.......2002-07-23
I have read a few more books on this subject. All of them share many concepts. However each of these books add useful ideas of how to start an online business. I recommend to read not only this one but others like: "Starting an Online Business" by Frank Fiore, "Mompreneurs Online" by Patricia Cobe and "Making Money in Cyberspace" by Paul and Sarah Edwards. Do not stop only on one book, search other sources and you will have a better idea about Online Bunisness. This book have some chapters that will be very basic to some readers but the overall idea of this publication is worth to read it. You will find interviews with succesful e-commerce entrepreneurs. I loved the interviews with Chris Gwynn in Chapter 16 (founder and president of Fridgedoor.com) and Tim Brady and Paul Graham in Chapter 15 (Vice President of Production and Executive Producer of Yahoo Stores). Dont't miss this book! you might be the next successful e-entrepreneur...
