Book Description

Ultimate Bar Book is the first and only guide to classic and new drink recipes. Loaded with essential-to-know topics such as barware, tools, and mixing tips, this book has it all. As a mistress of mixology, the author has the classics down to a T the Martini, the Bloody Mary, plus the many variations (the Dirty Martini, the Virgin Mary). And then there are all the creative new elixirs the author brings to the table, like the Tasmanian Twister Cocktail or the Citron Sparkler. Illustrations show precisely what type of glass should be used for each drink. With dozens of recipes for garnishes, rims, infusions, and syrups; punches, gelatin shooters, hot drinks, and non-alcoholic beverages; and let's not forget an essential selection of hangover remedies, Ultimate Bar Book is nothing short of top-shelf.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Very good help.......2007-10-03

It's a very good bar book. It has helped me a lot. The only problem is that it should have and index for each liquor and its definition. Sometimes I have the name of a liquor and is hard to find where it says what it is. But the rest is perfect!

5 out of 5 stars Great looking book.......2007-08-13

I'm new to drinking. I love this book. It has a picture and description of different glasses and bar equipment. Each recipe shows what glass to use. Some recipes have other names the drink is known by or the history of the drink. This is an excellent book!

5 out of 5 stars The best bar book out there.......2007-06-19

I have over ten books that contain drink recipes and this is by far the best. It has tons of drink recipes. The drinks are all the standard names, rather than the crazy names in many books. It also has lots on information that is really unobtrusive, because what you really want when you buy a book like this is drink recipes.

It has a very nice cover. I've spilled stuff on it, and it's wiped right off. Plus, this book is nice enough that no matter how fancy-schmancy your bar is, then this book will fit right in.

It has illustrations of the kind of glass for every drink, which is very cool, because I can never remember what an old-fashioned glass is.

Also, it has sketches of all of the different kinds of bar equipment out there. I never knew there were five different kinds of wine openers, and they are a butler's friend, classic corkscrew, lever pull, screwpull, sommelier's corkscrew and a winged corkscrew. My new goal is to collect all five.

It also has different, cool information about the different alcohols. Like it talked about how Don Jose Maria Guadalupe Cuervo was the one who invented tequila in 1795. I love Cuervo tequila, so it was cool to know how it got started.

5 out of 5 stars Expansive Mixology Guide.......2007-04-14

The Ultimate Bar Book, at 450 pages, is as comprehensive as you are likely ever to need. It provides recipes to the classics and all of their variants, newly fashionable drinks, and provides rational commentary on the ingredients--whether to use the pricey ones or not, and what equivalents you might use. It even provides a guide to the barware for each drink.

The book is well constructed and attractive. Its enjoyable just to thumb through it, and to see what is in so many drinks. The mixing trends come out after a brief review of the many drinks--you can easily expand your cocktail repertoire without the fuss of mixing and failing several times.

I recommend the book as a basic bar staple. If you enjoy the art of "mixology," this is a fun sourcebook.

5 out of 5 stars Best book to start with or add to collection.......2007-04-04

This was my first book I bought to do with making drinks and I couldn't be happier. First of all, the book itself is amazing, great hard cover and beautiful pages. Next, the author really spends some time going over 101 of making drinks. Lastly, the recipes are very well put together along with side notes for variations and suggested substitutes. At the end, the author even gives drink recipes for morning after remedies. And again, I must point out the beauty of the book, sure it's hard to keep it open, but unless you are actually a professional bartender needing a spiral book, the Ultimate Bar Book is beautiful enough to just be a decorative item in the kitchen. It's also nice how the author will stop and take a minute to discuss the classic cocktails and their histories, etc. The author also takes breaks in the book to talk about the individual alcohol's themselves using elegant page colors and patterns. Funny enough, having this book now makes me want to go out and buy another bar book, but I actually can't find another one that meets the beauty, elegance, sophistication, amount of knowledge, insights gained, and completeness as the "Ultimate Bar Book: The Comprehensive Guide to Over 1,000 Cocktails".
Bravo! And I will be waiting for what will come next from Mittie Hellmich.

Book Description

From pre–Civil War bartending to the night clubs of the 1940s, these bar books document the trends and mores of their respective eras. Beginning with the first known recipe book compiled for those seeking to serve sophisticated beverages, through the birth of many of the 21st century's drink standards and the tales of those who consumed them, these drink guides provide an insider's glimpse into the excess and splendor of the pre- and post-Prohibition eras.
Based on the actual bar book used by the Waldorf-Astoria prior to Prohibition, this collection of cocktails serves up more than 350 recipes. In addition to documenting the origin of many cocktails and mixed drinks still commonplace today, the book chronicles the background of their creation and the antics of some of the cronies—Buffalo Bill Cody and Bat Masterson, among others—who were regulars at the bar.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great buy for cocktail enthusiasts!.......2006-02-25

Albert Crockett's The Old Waldorf-Astoria Bar Book belongs on the shelf of any curious mixologist or cocktail enthusiast. This version is basically a reprint and repackaging of the original 1935 (1934?) edition. The quality of the typefaces and illustrations is pretty decent and the hardcover binding is great. For $10 this is a real value!

Mr. Jasper's review seems to miss one key element: Yes Mr. Crockett sounds a bit old and crusty and like he's telling your grandfather's stories...this book was published in 1935! Not only that, his assumed title on the first page is "Historian of the Old Waldorf-Astoria." And yes, by no means is this a good book for those wishing to mix modern drinks for a run-of-the-mill bar crowd. There are countless others out there for that purpose. However, it is an excellent read on the origin of modern cocktails, and spins some intriguing stories of the pre-Prohibition era. Perhaps it will inspire modern imbibers to seek out things like orange bitters, Benedictine, and a complement of glassware. Oh and by the way, Mr. Crockett recommends rye whiskey for the Manhattan. ;)

A related book (written 60 years later or so) is the excellent Cocktail: The Drinks Bible for the 21st Century (Harrington, Moorhead). It contains small essays on all the classic coktails as well recipes, background information, mixing techniques, etc. For some reason this book is still out of print, leading to ridiculous prices of $65 or more in the used market. If you can't score a copy you can read most of it at the Hotwired Cocktailtime web site.

2 out of 5 stars Cocktail Archaeology.......2005-05-28

To start, this book isn't bad - but it's not useful. Basically this is like hearing long stories from your grandfather's "glory days" as a young man. My impression or guesses about the author is that he's an older gentleman who finds today's chain restaurant and trendy, "theme" bars an abomination when compared to the days of "real" cocktail drinking from the early days of the 20th century and those nasty days of prohibition. To some degree, he's right - anyone who orders a chocolate martini should be shot dead on the spot. Many of the acne-scarred kids behind the bar of a Friday's or whathaveyou have no more an idea of what a Manhattan is, other than a big city somewhere in New York State. That said, there are some interesting eye-witness accounts on what it was like to drink during prohibition - who knew? Scary sounding stuff.

On the whole, this is like listening to an older person's windy stories about "when I was your age..." There's much value and merit in that - don't get me wrong. Cocktail recipe-wise, the recipes are too old and outdated to be of any use to anyone, unless you're trying to open a theme bar under the prohibition theme - in which case you're probably more concerned about decor and finding a life-size cardboard Al Capone than authentically mixed cocktails. That brings us to what I took to be the author's point - there are too few "real" bartenders are out there - those who know a Manhattan should be made with bourbon, not blended whiskey and should always use a dash of bitters. Our world has changed and to some degree, sadly passsed the need for that kind of bartender by. People today are too interested in seeing a silly juggling act behind the bar and tastes have changed away from people who enjoy the taste of spirits to those who want to cover up that nasty alcohol taste with candy. Kiddie drinks are now the norm, and this book laments the passing of the real cocktails - those that don't include whole fruit or blenders.

You'll get better history out of Cocktails in New York. This is an archaeological work - you'll need to know your subject before digging in. You won't be gleefully making drinks from this book for your friends - I dare you to find 8 people who will drink any of these without complaint that they're too strong or aren't sweet enough. These are not drinks for anyone who has ever had a frozen anything or mixes anything with Coke, Sprite, etc. If anyone tells you "I like Chambord" or any of the zillion fakey, flavored schnapps, they will not like these cocktails. Cocktail drinker eschew those sugary, candy flavored liquids. I'm a bar manager and refuse to even stock them. Kiddie drinkers can go drink at a kiddies bar.

5 out of 5 stars A great Bar Book.......2003-10-23

This is a unique book. It will give you much pleasure to read a brief and humorous history of the Prohibition years in America, with a collection of pre and post-prohibition cocktail drunk at the old Waldorf Bar, followed by a listing of pre-war mixed drinks. For each drink, you are treated with a delightful and humorous anecdote that will make great cocktail conversation.
For historians, there is a brief explanation of the origin and meaning of names given to each drink.
This book will make a great gift for anyone who appreciates a drink at cocktail time.

5 out of 5 stars Great addition to my Bar Book Collection.......2003-10-20

This beautifully reproduced book brings back a joyful recollection of history wrapped around the practical drink recipes that all my friends enjoy while I make them drinks in my home bar.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars best for bartenders.......2007-06-08

I was hoping to learn a trick or two for a party I was going to. Just a coulpe impressive tricks/conversation starters. However, most of the tricks in this book require quite a bit of set up beforehand. They are not exactly tricks you can preform with the items found at any bar. Many of them require a certain brand of matches, or you to start the trick with a new book of matches minus two that you you have prepared ahead of time. Then if someone wants you to repeat the trick you have to have another book with two matches also removed. I had hoped to learn the tricks and be able to use them when I went out to the bar, But with all the prep work in the tricks this would not be possible. If you were a bartender this may be an interesting book for you but for the public there isn't much to learn from this book.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2002-12-24

Although many of the "amusements" are amusing - they are also logic tricks that we did in the 3rd grade. Such as moving matchsticks around to form a shape in less than 2 moves....the book just doesn't provide enough of the "cool" tricks that I expected from the description.

Also, and my biggest complaint, is that many of the tricks use the assumption that I can palm coins, dollar bills, and other items with no effort. If I could palm items, I probably wouldn't be reading this book to learn tricks.

5 out of 5 stars So you want to learn a trick or two and amaze a few people.........2001-11-05

Miss Charming has the perfect sense of humor that every bartender in the world should have! The book is witty, light hearted and just down right funny.

Miss Charming tells a story about each trick in the book which in themselves are great, and then goes into explaining exactly how each trick is performed.

I spent a whole evening reading the book and trying out the tricks. Some of them are so easy it's scary to think that people actually fall for it, others take a little bit of practice, but fear not, Miss Charming will walk you through each step of the way!

On a flight to Tokyo recently, I had half the flight crew and everyone sitting around me enthralled for an hour as I did some of the tricks I had learned, talk about a way to make time go by quick and make a few new friends!

Miss Charming has been doing bar tricks for over 19 years and is considered one of the foremost experts...ok, I think she is the foremost expert in bar tricks!

Now get out your dollar bills, your shot glasses, and your match sticks because you are ready to start baffling and amusing your friends! Be sure to pick up a copy of "Miss Charming's Book of Bar Amusements" and keep behind the bar right next to your bartenders bible.

5 out of 5 stars Simple Creative Fun.......2001-10-23

As I read through Miss Charmings book I thought her ideas were original and in some instances very simple- that anyone could follow through with them. So I learned a few of them and off I went to try them on my friends.....let me tell you, if you want to be the attention of a party you need this book and it's amusements. Young and old will be amazed when you pick up simple bar materials and turn them into magic. It is only a matter of time before bars from all over make this standard issue for public and private bartenders. I guess that is why her book is so popular with all my friends who come to learn amusements out of this fun and creative book.

3 out of 5 stars A mixed bag of tricks.......2001-09-14

Though written with enthusiasm by an author obviously passionate about her craft, I found the collection of tricks oddly balanced between the entirely mundane to the astoundingly expensive, to the possibly unsafe.

The book is divided into six sections. Each deals with a broad category of tricks that essentially represent garden variety magic. You'll learn how to do some manipulation of money, matches, glassware, paper, and various odds and ends commonly available at bars. The instructions are clear, as is the focus. The author is trying to effortlessly convey tricks that, in the main, can be done while a bartender is about her normal business. The instructions and illustrations make it easy to learn these simple tricks. As such, it is doubtless a valuable resource.

However, serious magic students, and even more experienced bartenders, will dismiss this work as little more than fluff. Some of the amusements even run counter to standard bar flare theory, suggesting a "trick" when the pretended act can actually be done. A handful of the "amusements" call for the creative use of fire and/or extremely flammable chemicals, which would seem potentially dangerous in a bar filled with alcohol. Many are so obvious one wonders just how impressive they'd actually be. Little attention is given to the creation of an aura of magic--showmanship, if you will--which is made even more necessary in the absence of extraordinary illusion. Fortunately, the audience for the tricks in this book will likely be those who are at least a little inebriated.

5 out of 5 stars A fun, very entertaining book.......2005-11-20

This is a fun book.

I read it while living in Puerto Rico so I could run out and get the all ingredients and mix up any drinks immediately. My friends and I came to love this book. We used it extensively (especially on Friday nights). I also enjoyed the snippets of fiction and art work woven through the book that tie it all the drink recipes together. It's difficult to make a bar book entertaining to read but the author succeeds 100%.

Stories of writers from all over the world in their "drinking" sprees, detailling with an excellent narrative and wonderful drawings (by Günter Mattei) the making of drinks and what these writers drank. As we say in French, it is the "petite histoire" behind their stories (of the writers and the drinks).

5 out of 5 stars The rise and demise of the Old West saloon . . ........2004-10-04

This book begins with the stereotypical Hollywood image of the Old West saloon, together with a still from a western movie, in which John Wayne and Marlene Dietrich look on as a barroom brawl is about to commence. Then the author quickly takes the reader back to the real west, and there follows an entertaining and informative account of the saloon as it emerged as a social institution on the 19th century frontier, flourished until the turn of the century, fell on hard times and then disappeared with the arrival of Prohibition.

The author covers a range of subjects in a series of 15 chapters, each devoted to a topic such as the colonial origins of the drinking establishment, its first rude appearances on the prairies and in the mining camps, the furnishings of bars, the various dimensions of social life in the western saloon, what drinkers drank, bars providing sleeping accommodations, the uneasy relationship between saloons and frontier religion, gambling, entertainment, women in bars, and barroom violence.

As social history, this study of the western saloon is rich with anecdotes, amusing stories, and an appreciation for the ironies inherent in the subject. A number of historical figures have walk-ons, including Billy the Kid, Bat Masterson, Wild Bill Hickock, and Buffalo Bill. Not to mention personages of note whose careers took them to the West: Sarah Bernhardt, Oscar Wilde, and Lola Montez.

Most interesting to this reader was the chapter on various forms of the quite literal "rotgut" consumed on the range and in the mining camps. Also of interest was the chapter on entertainment and the musical and theatrical productions, including Shakespeare and opera, that found avid audiences among saloon-goers. Maybe most informative is the author's putting together of the evolution of the saloon itself - its quick ascendance from humble beginnings to a central role in the male-dominated social life of the frontier.

Well researched, the book draws heavily on contemporary sources, including newspaper accounts, memoirs, almanacs, and songs. The book makes use of 150 well-chosen illustrations and photographs, several pages of notes, a lengthy bibliography, and an index. It's an excellent reference for the bookshelf of any Western enthusiast.

4 out of 5 stars A fun-filled trip back to the old West.......1999-09-16

This one is not to be missed. For history buffs, as well as those who enjoy a good read, this is a great excursion back in time to when the saloon was a cornerstone of the community. I enjoyed it immensely, laughed out loud more than a few times, and highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Fact filled and fun to read.......1998-10-07

Richard Erdoes has done his homework in this homage to an icon of the old west-the saloon. Beginning with the early pubs & inns to the brawling watering holes of the frontier, Erdoes chronicles the decline and fall of a great American institution. The great illustrations alone are worth the price of the book.
