5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-08-23

This Study Guide was well organized and its presentation does not intimidate. I will definitely continue purchasing relative information to the field written by this author.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful for exam prep..........2007-05-12

This guide was a concise and clear way to review the exam material quickly and throughly. I recommend it as a study tool to prep properly for the exam. I used this along with a few outlines from my classes, as a supplement, and I passed the exam yesterday in the first 90 questions. The exam was easier than the study guide's practice tests...if you do well with the practice exams, you'll be fine on the real deal.

3 out of 5 stars Study Guide for the Therapeutic Recreation Specialist Cert........2002-03-24

The guide was helpful as a general review. Just took my recertification test and did pass, but was surprized how much the guide left out. Some of the questions/topics on the test were not addressed in the guide. The outline was more helpful if you use it to research and find further information. Good Luck!

I just took NCTRC's exam in Atlanta. I passed. The book helped, but could have been improved with a broader based diagnostic groupings section. The book could also recommed other resources to help prepare the candidate

Book Description

In the past, when sport simply excluded girls, the equation of males with active athletic power and of females with weakness and passivity seemed to come easily, almost naturally. Now, however, with girls' and women's dramatic movement into sport, the process of exclusion has become a bit subtler, a bit more complicated-and yet, as Michael Messner shows us in this provocative book, no less effective. In Taking the Field, Messner argues that despite profound changes, the world of sport largely retains and continues its longtime conservative role in gender relations.

To explore the current paradoxes of gender in sport, Messner identifies and investigates three levels at which the "center" of sport is constructed: the day-to-day practices of sport participants, the structured rules and hierarchies of sport institutions, and the dominant symbols and belief systems transmitted by the major sports media. Using these insights, he analyzes a moment of gender construction in the lives of four- and five-year-old children at a soccer opening ceremony, the way men's violence is expressed through sport, the interplay of financial interests and dominant men's investment in maintaining the status quo in the face of recent challenges, and the cultural imagery at the core of sport, particularly televised sports. Through these examinations Messner lays bare the practices and ideas that buttress-as well as those that seek to disrupt-the masculine center of sport.

Taking the Field exposes the subtle and not-so-subtle ways in which men and women collectively construct gender through their interactions-interactions contextualized in the institutions and symbols of sport.

Michael A. Messner is professor of sociology and gender studies at the University of Southern California. His previous books include Power at Play: Sports and the Problem of Masculinity (1995) and Politics of Masculinities: Men in Movements (1997).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A feminist man who's both smart and honest.......2002-10-02

Here are a few of the many reasons I keep reading everything Mike Messner writes:

1) He seems to take the feminist "personal is political" slogan to heart, revealing much more of himself and his own questions and vulnerabilities than most other male writers.

2) He uses both academic and journalistic techniques to research his topics and support his theses.

3) He lacks the arrogance of many experts, retaining an open mind as he delibertely attempts to look at things in original ways.

4) The topic of this book -- and several of his others -- continues to fascinate me. By looking at how we "do gender" in a sporting context, we come to understand so much about how and why any and all women and men behave as we do.

Highly recommended. -- Mariah Burton Nelson

5 out of 5 stars Putting Sport into the Center of Gender.......2002-09-07

USC Sociologist Michael Messner, who has spent the majority of his academic career studying issues of sport, masculinity, and power has written a truly significant book with Taking the Field: Women, Men, and Sports. The book finds a place for much of his previous research, as well as the research of other gender and sport scholars, to elicit the mechanisms in which gender is produced, reproduced, and contested in sport.

The premise of the book holds that gender is a product of structure, culture, and an individual's interactions within culture. This serves as the launching point for a deft discussion of the affects of sport in America. Messner has a talent for seeing the larger picture in seemingly "normal" events, and in Taking the Field he analyzes the affect that "normal" interactions in sport has on the subjugation of women and gay men, and the real and symbolic violence committed against both women and men by men.

Messner's work is important to scholars of both sport and gender, but is particularly important to gender scholars who too frequently fail to recognize the power sport, and sport media, has in shaping current gender relations, particularly the institutionalization of manhood. But Taking the Field is also highly recommend for anybody who has an interest in understanding the larger implications of American sport, beyond winning and losing. It is a must read for coaches, parents, and educators who have anything to do with sport.

To help us understand how theory hits the road, Messner highlights familiar news events such as the Columbine Massacre, or the 1999 Women's World Cup Championships, and analyzes them from a social-feminist perspective. In such he clearly elucidates the perils of the way we do sport in America and shows us that the concepts and theories he speaks of are not just found on the pages of books - that they are real, with real life application, and have a very real affect on people's lives.

Taking the Field is also important because it brings both homophobia and the mediea into the center of analysis. Whereas much attention has been given to the media's role in gender relations, I have been wholly discouraged by the absence of homophobia from much sport literature, and from sport in gender literature. Taking the Field shows the significance homophobia plays in sport, shaping and maintaining athletics as a masculine and heterosexual institution, and how important sport is in the production of gender

In the end Dr. Messner suggests that resistance to the system is possible (perhaps even inevitable). The masculinist center of sport has a soft underbelly and it is currently challenged by individual sports, female athleticism, the growing presence of gay male athleticism, and progressive individual men who are no longer willing to allow the system to function in a homophobic and misogynistic manner. But while these challenges to a hegemonic masculinity have threatened sport's ability to be openly sexist and homophobic, we must understand how sport attempts to reproduce itself covertly, so that we can continue to progress toward a culture of equality...

    Book Description

Greek athletics flourished more in the Roman empire than ever before. Jason König offers an exciting new cultural history of the athletics of this period, setting out neglected evidence for athletic festivals and athletic education. He also explores the way in which discussion of athletics, a highly controversial subject, could become entangled in wider debates in Greek and Roman culture.

This book offered me a great chance to see EPCOT Center as it was formed and created. It also looks deeply into each of the origanal rides including both Future World and World Showcase areas. The conceptual art work in this book is also increadible. This book also has many photos of the inside and outside of the rides. For the avad fan or for the first timer I suggest this book

5 out of 5 stars Super reference; nostalgic look at future past.......1999-07-10

Two versions of the book were issued. The first one a shorter "pre-opening" version of 127 pages and the second (ca 1983) over 200 pages, includes three or four tri-fold panoramic illustrations. Illustrations are the big attraction here, capturing the park at its pre-opening epic construction through the first year or so. Unfortunate that so much gay activities have cast a poll over the park recently, but efforts under way to apparently tone it down and return it to the glittering jewel depicted in book. A super reference

    Book Description

Today, there are women athletes who are media celebrities and a source of inspiration for many. But not long ago, being serious about sport was considered appropriate only for men and boys. Throughout the twentieth century, women's increasing participation in sport has challenged our conception of womanhood. Some celebrated the female athlete as the embodiment of modern womanhood, but others branded her "mannish" or lesbian. Ultimately, she altered the perception of sport as an exclusively male domain.

Susan Cahn's story of how sport has changed women's lives and women have transformed sport is an important chapter in the wider history of women's struggles to define their role in the twentieth century. For the women who dared to compete, participation in sport enabled them to expand the boundaries of women's activities and to claim that strength, skill, physicality, and competitiveness could be authentic attributes of womanhood. This is the legacy they passed on to the new generation of women for whom athleticism is becoming a way of life.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very informative and enlightening!.......2006-06-01

This book is among the ones I keep returning to in my work as a writer and scholar on women's sports. Cahn does an excellent job of not only telling the history of women's sports in the twentieth century, but also connecting that history to the broader social trends and struggles over issues such as gender roles, race, and sexuality. Cahn's research is of the highest quality, and many of the endnotes contain additional interesting information.

I highly recommend this book to anyone concerned with gender equity or feminism, especially as regards sports.

    Book Description

The author delves into the science, psychology, and art of wilderness survival. His analysis is riveting, his conclusions startling.

After her plane crashes, a seventeen-year-old girl spends eleven days walking through the Peruvian jungle. Against all odds, with no food, shelter, or equipment, she gets out. A better-equipped group of adult survivors of the same crash sits down and dies. What makes the difference?

Examining such stories of miraculous endurance and tragic death—how people get into trouble and how they get out again (or not)—Deep Survival takes us from the tops of snowy mountains and the depths of oceans to the workings of the brain that control our behavior. Through close analysis of case studies, Laurence Gonzales describes the essence of a survivor and offers twelve "Rules of Survival." In the end, he finds, it's what's in your heart, not what's in your pack, that separates the living from the dead. Fascinating for any reader, and absolutely essential for anyone who takes a hike in the woods, this book will change the way we understand ourselves and the great outdoors.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Necessary Reading.......2007-10-21

This is not a premasticated self help guide. There are exciting tales of wilderness adventure and military exploit; however, I found, as a new widow, each "lesson" spoke directly to me and gave me something to which I could relate. Mr. Gonzales has penned an exciting guide to the psychological aspects of human survival. Well balanced, without exageration of thrills or reduction of science to brain twinkies. Not a substitute for proper skill training but very, very necessary for the business of living. I am giving a copy to each of my grown, thrill seeking sons and brothers.

    5 out of 5 stars Captivating Read.......2007-10-06

This book is a captivating read. Once you start reading it you won't want to put it down. This is a must read for anyone venturing off of their couch and beyond the bounds of their metropolitan life style. Lawrence Gonzales provides real life examples of the human plight in our world where nature is king.

2 out of 5 stars Where was his editor?.......2007-09-17

There is the potential for a great book hidden in this one. Unfortunately the authors ego hamstrings his own ability to bring it to fruition. A good editor coulda/shoulda done it for him. 60% of the book is the author's attempt to review the latest neuro- and other science explaining how our brains work when under extreme stress. 20% of the book is devoted to the completely superfluous stories of his own brushes with danger and palling around with famous buddies like Lyle Lovett and Lyle's Dad. That leaves 20% of book left for the meat - the real stories of real people in extreme situations. The science is interesting, but his attempts to synthesize wildly diverse fields is rambling, repetitious and often just boring.

1 out of 5 stars Apparently I am in the minority.......2007-09-10

I thought this book was VERY poorly written and primarily a pontification of the author"s very boring, "oh and then I survived again aren't I amazing and wonderful, this little humble miracle that I am" *accomplishments*. Personal perspective is certainly valid, but not to the degree that he took it. I would have prefered to have heard other people's stories. I am a RN, EMT, trained as a wilderness first responder, climber, skier, trekker, runner, horsewoman, former river guide and I do not underestimate the value of his information and the importance of sharing it, but his style of writing and his boasting just turned me off. I say borrow it from the library, don't waste your money by buying it.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for insight into the psychology of survival.......2007-08-28

I found this well written, informative and very enjoyable to read. If you are studying wilderness survival skills then consider this as the flip-side of your training. Studying the psychological aspects of survival is as important as the physical skills. This is a very good book.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for Aspiring Sports Executives.......2005-06-27

Dr. Foster's book is required reading for anyone interested in working in a front office of a major sports franchise. Foster provides context, cases, analysis, and methods for addressing the problems and opportunities that confront decision makers in front offices.

Not only is the book exceptionally informative, providing excellent examples and explanations, it's also a fascinating read that can provide a different perspective on how decisions are made (and should be made) in sports. It's rare to have a textbook that's this much fun to read; rarer still that it's actually insightful, valuable, and applicable to the real world.

    This isn't just a great textbook -- it's a great book period.

5 out of 5 stars Worth it's weight in gold.......2007-08-24

Someone gave me this book my first year of teaching. I have now taught music for 6 years, and have used this book every year. Each song is notated musically, and accompanied by the game and a short introduction as to the origins. I also teach Kindermusik, and can see that many of our activities must have been taken right out of this book. I HIGHLY recommend this book, and although I wish you great luck in finding it for under $100, or at the library, you wont be disappointed if you spend the money.

    4 out of 5 stars great resource.......2002-01-12

This book has a wide variety of different musical games, all of which are singing and movement games. Perfect for the Kodaly educator. Many of the games can be found in more readily available and inexpensive resources, however, so try to get titles before you buy.

5 out of 5 stars scouting for boys review.......2007-01-18

Excellent book detailing the original , if somewhat dated thoughts , of the founder of the Scout Movement- Sir Robert Baden Powell. A must have read for all interetesed in the movement and it's principles

5 out of 5 stars Excellent if you skip the intro.......2007-01-11

This original text of BP's "Scouting for Boys" is an excellent read. You can skip the introduction, however. The intro is a steaming pile of horse excrement written by someone seething with contempt for BP and the Boy Scout movement. Why it was included with the book is beyond me unless it's to provide bum fodder whilst camping. Remember, a scout is thrifty!

I was an Eagle Scout as a boy, and now I'm the founding Scoutmaster of my sons' troop. As such, I was anxious to get a copy of this hard cover version. Baden-Powell's work is a classic and well worth the read. The problem with this edition is the Introduction by Elleke Boehmer. Without it, the book is a 5-star. Ms. Boehmer appears a non-believer. Reading her is like taking a pessimistic art critic along side while viewing an art gallery. Far more benefit (for all concerned) would occur without her input. For each positive she states about BP, she mentions a negative. She also spends just over two pages discussing homosexual tendencies (pp xxxii-xxxiii) within BP's works, something which is out of place in this work. I started to list several quotes, but I think one sums it up best of all from the back cover: "She has never been a scout, but she did once shake hands with Lady Baden-Powell at a jubilee celebration in South Africa." I guess that must make her an expert.

5 out of 5 stars "The British Empire wants your help".......2004-06-16

At the very beginning of the twentieth century, retired General Robert Baden-Powell, the hero of the siege of Mafeking, coalesced his ideas for an organization to train young British boys in scouting for the British Empire. Not a very organized thinker, Baden-Powell borrowed heavily from all sorts of unrelated resources - newspaper articles, military dispatches, fiction, and much more - and produced this, his first book on scouting. Originally published as six separate books, this book brings all of them together, complete with original illustrations.

Now, as might be expected from its roots, this book reflects a lot of the biases and ways of thinking from Edwardian England. But, leaving that aside, this is a fun and interesting book that shows clearly the forms that have stayed with the Boy Scouts movement to this very day. The introduction was written by Elleke Boehmer, a professor of Colonial and Postcolonial literature, and is a fairly predictable deconstruction/analysis of B-P and his movement.

Now, as a newcomer to Scouting (my son is a Tenderfoot) did I find anything useful in this book? I sure did. Robert Baden-Powell was very knowledgeable about the subject, and this book sure shows it. (I never thought of tying my shoes like that!) Of course some of the information is out of date, especially the first-aid information, so it isn't really usable by the boys "as is." But, this is a nice resource, one that shows you where Scouting started.

Oh, and I must say that I actually enjoyed the somewhat jumbled organization of this book. It isn't as scholarly and antiseptic as modern Boy Scout books, and the stories and tales laced throughout make the reading much more fun. Plus, I did find the focus on some subjects, such as logic and deductive reasoning, to be quite interesting. I loved this book, and highly recommend it to you!

5 out of 5 stars A Book That Changed The World.......2000-01-21

This book is the basic foundation of the largest youth organisation in the history of the world and has been printed in more editions and languages than most other books apart from the Christion Bible. It was designed to be read by young people and to motivate them to develop all of their skills. It continues to be a major force in motivating young people to prepare to be active citizens in society. However it also contains simple truths for adults on the nature of young people and how best to help them learn and to achieve their full potential. It is required reading for adults educating or working with young people. Read it, enjoy it and then come join Scouting.
