Not helpful supplement to actual textbook.......2007-09-13
This book claims that you will "never hightlight again," but actually all this is is a glossary-like listing of vocabulary words from each chapter of the actual textbook. The general point of the information from the actual text does not come through at all. If you are using the actual textbook for a class, you will not understand the material if do not read the actual text. If you already bought the textbook, this is not a necessary (or even helpful) supplement.
Good Product.......2007-03-21
Great shape, quick shipping. Too expensive, but that is what this product normally runs unfortuantly. Overall good experience
Book for online course.......2006-11-03
I am using this book for a online college curse and the book it's great! It provide many tools like the textbook's website to help you to understand the material and exams online. In general, I like the little cases that are update and motivate you to keep reading.
If this book by itself can help you to develop you own Small Business, it worth.
Book Review.......2006-03-04
Good overview on what you need to consider before you start your own business.
It's... OK........2002-08-26
The presentation of this book is excellent; It holds the reader's interest quite well. However, despite a recent "update", it shows it's age when the author regularly goes off on dot-com tangents, bringing the internet up in contexts that I believe the last few years have proven are not viable. Good grief, ppl. This isn't freaking 1997! We need a business text, not the wet dreams of a bunch of computer geeks turned businessmen! Anyways, if you are looking for a text with a lot of depth, look elsewhere. This book is to business textbooks what Quickbooks(c)(R)(TM) is to accounting software. In short, don't waste your money, unless you need it for a class. If so, be happy. If your prof teaches out of this, your tests will be very easy.

Call this book the Management Bible.......2007-09-19
Ken Blanchard went on to become the management guru of the 90s, writing countless books that can be found right here on Amazon. However, this text book is where is all began. I call it a text book because it is. This text has been used and is still used in management schools around the nation. Written with Hersey and Johnson, this book is the definitive foundation text on how to manage organizational behavior as it pertains to managing people. Following are a couple key points:
1) Diagnosis: It is a manager's job to modify their management style to employee needs. Evaluting employee needs and corresponding management styles can be easily done using Situational Leadership tools (found in book).
2) Intervention: Performance can be managed using the fundamental postive reinforcement psychology. Further, by consciously indentifying needs, performance can be improved more rapidly.
3) Evaluation: If behavioral change does not occur, the individual may not be in the right role.
This sounds dry and obvious by today's standards, but it wasn't when the first edition of this book was published (1980s). Further, most modern organiztional and management theory is based on this book. There is still gold to dig from its pages.
A 'must have' for all leaders........2006-06-17
If you take your job as a business leader seriously, this book is a 'must have'. As a business coach I use it in my practice with great success. For leaders (and managers who think they are leaders) and their teams it's an eye-opener. It gives insight in what it takes to turn a good team into a great team, and what great leadership is all about. If you want to be more effective as a leader and take your team to the highest level of readiness, read this book. It will change your life....and of those you lead.
Management of Organizational Behavior.......2005-02-26
Not too bad as these books go but a tremendous amount of verbiage explaining the obvious. Excellent example of turning simple concepts in complex charts and definitions. I would imagine that people in the field love this hyperbole but it's BS to me and pretty much a waste of time to drudge though all of it.
Goes where few texts dare to go: the real-world.......2004-03-15
I recommend this to managers as much as students.
Sure, the price seems like a lot of cash to shell out at first. But trust me, it is worth it. I had to read it for a Management class, and it started of like a typical OB text, illustrating the history of management studies (Taylor to Maslow to Mayo to Likert to ...). Good stuff, but pretty dull. Then, Hersey et al went where most scholars, even the supposedly worldly MBA types, fear to tread: real-world application!
The text covers all of the material covered Blanchard's "One Minute Manager," "Putting the One Minute Manager to Work," and a shelf load of other books. It also does a great job introducing Blanchard and Hersey's Situational Leadership, where the manager matches leadership behavior to a report's ability level and motivation. This replaces "Leadership and the One Minute Manager," and delves much deeper into the topic.
Hersey et al also cover:
- Behavioral shaping, and positive and negative reinforcement quite nicely
- Communications skills necessary to lead reports
- Power building, and using effective power bases ...
- The list literally goes on and on.
I use the concepts I was first exposed to here day in and day out. They work. My OB professor told us that, if he would be limited to just one book on management, he would choose this one. And, five years later, I agree. I am very glad that I did not sell this book back to the campus bookstore. I consult the book at least once a week while pondering both thorny and maundane problems with my employees.
You see, Dr. Davis? Some of us do listen.
All about Leadership!!! Must read!.......2003-06-13
This book is one of my favorites! It leads you first through a complete review of management and leadership theories, then introduces the authors' famous SITUATIONAL LEADERSHIP model and theory. This book goes into great depth about the sit-lead model and theory, and is a great read. Want to be a better leader??? Read the book by the experts! ...

Great reference/cheat sheet.......2007-07-26
I have used this book on all my performance reviews, it is so good, that I could not stop picking phrases from it, and my boss had to tell me to be "less verbose" in my self assessment!
Book for new managers.......2007-07-15
This book was recommended in one of my management classes. I was able view it during one of the class breaks. Immediately, I knew it will save me time and effort. Many useful phrases to help and prompt thoughts for reviewing team members.
A good guide .......2007-07-05
I purchased this guide for the supervisors on my team because it gives phrases to use when appraising employees. Its also gives phrases to use when writing awards or other evaulations of performance. The guide is organized into different areas-teamwork, communication skills, productivity, etc. which helps find helpful phrases to use. This guide is simple but elegant in its usefulness.
Who needs this? .......2007-06-12
If I sat on a toilet all day thinking of sycophantic half-sentences, this is probably what I'd come up with. I hate to think about what the brain-dead, incompetent boob who needs a book like this looks like.
It's management speak like this crap that inspired movies like Office Space and television shows such as The Office and Just Shoot Me. On that note, maybe I should give this book five stars.
One thing's for certain, anyone in your office who orders this book should be fired immediately.
Helpful Tool.......2007-05-16
Very helpful tool in writing performance reviews and avoiding redundancy when writing performance reviews.

Healing Back Pain promises permanent elimination of back pain without drugs, surgery, or exercise. It should have been titled Understanding TMS Pain, because it discusses one particular cause of back pain--Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS)--and isn't really a program for self-treatment, with only five pages of action plan (and many more pages telling why conventional methods don't work). According to John E. Sarno, M.D., TMS is the major cause of pain in the back, neck, shoulders, buttocks, and limbs--and it is caused not by structural abnormalities but by the mind's effort to repress emotions. He's not saying that your pain is all in your head; rather, he's saying that the battle going on in your mind results in a real physical disorder that may affect muscles, nerves, tendons, or ligaments. An injury may have triggered the disorder, but is not the cause of the amount or intensity of the resulting pain. According to Sarno, the mind tricks you into not facing repressed emotion by making you focus on pain in the body. When this realization sinks in ("and it must sink in, for mere intellectual appreciation of the process is not enough"), the trick doesn't work any more, and there's no need for the pain. (Healing Back Pain should not be used for self-diagnosis. Always consult a physician for chronic or acute back pain.) --Joan Price

Dr. John E. Sarno, author of the revolutionary book Mind Over Back Pain, is a medical pioneer whose program has helped thousands of patients overcome their back conditions--without drugs or dangerous surgery. Now, using his latest research into TMS (Tension Myositis Syndrome), Dr. Sarno goes one step further: after identifying stress and other psychological factors in back pain, he demonstrates how many of his patients have then gone on to heal themselves without exercise or other physical therapy. Find out:· Why self motivated and successful people are prone to TMS· How anxiety and repressed anger trigger muscle spasms· How people "train themselves" to experience back pain· How you may get relief from back pain· How you may get relief from back pain within two to six weeks by recognizing TMS and its causes With case histories and the results of in-depth mind-body research, Dr. Sarno describes how patients recognize the emotional roots of their TMS and sever the connections between mental and physical pain and how, just by reading this book, you may start recovering from back pain today.

give it a chance.......2007-10-10
it wont work if you dont believe it. read the whole book, figure it out, and fix the pain
An accidental, miraculous find!.......2007-09-25
I've been fighting spondy in my L5/S1 region, as well as nerve damage, since 1993/94 (due to injury). The diagnosis and prognosis continues to puzzle my orthopedic professionals for many years now because I refuse to have a fusion until the day arrives that I can no longer walk. Arthritic flare-ups during winter months have pretty much turned me against cold weather. The bursitis in my left hip has become so much worse that I was referred to a physical therapist who specializes in hip/pelvic work. At present, I am only 42 years old, but my doctors have taken everything away from me that I love doing. Most activities require more 'back' straining than they say I can handle. This is a hard pill to swallow for someone who had led a very active lifestyle until the age of 29.
I don't take med's. I truly believe in PT as a way to keep myself motivated to do what I can. So I visited this newly referred PT. She's great; she found so many things going on inside me. But to touch me was excruciating. When we started talking about how the injuries occurred, she learned more than she bargained for. There is much traumatic history that goes with the damage. I told her I had finished writing my book about what happened and how I had to dig up a lot of the memories to get the details in print (not published yet). She told me about a book another patient had told her about. I immediately bought this book. To be honest, as a psychology minor, I was rather skeptical about the content as far as the first chapter. Amazingly, by the end of Chapter 2, I was 100% pain-free!
I visited the PT at mid-way of the book. I said nothing about how I was feeling; just told her I'd been reading the book she recommended. (Note, she had NOT yet read this book). As she was palpating all the trigger points of where my pain lived, she commented something was so not normal for me, that I had not screamed the first time that visit! I told her she has to read this book because it speaks to the subconscious mind, somehow, for I had done nothing but read. There had been no written exercises, just enlightened reading. The following week I returned to her and she found that I was still pain-free, even with adding cardio (walks) to my daily routine... something that was not even in the picture for so long.
I've been pain-free for 1 month now. I'm a newbie at this, and I'm so enjoying the feeling of 'freedom' from the pain that had bound me for years. I added another activity this weekend: I had to wash my lawn tractor. To my surprise, there is still NO pain!!! My friends talk to me on the phone and comment how "calm" and positive I sound. They are amazed at the change in me. Chronic pain messes with the whole of a person, not just an area or two. My mood is upbeat always, stress doesn't bother me now (I've been juggling home ownership crises with a smile!), and I just feel I can conquer any mountain now.
I spoke with my GP about this book, also, as I have about other 'non-traditional diagnoses and treatment' books. He's a great GP and his favorite pass time is endocrinology. As I showed him the book, his face lit up and he said, "I love that book!"
I've recommended this book to friends and colleagues who have struggled with unending pain, some for far longer than I. It is my hope that others will learn of this theory and realize that TMS is a part of our culture that continues to evolve in the arena of those who still 'practice' medicine. I believe Dr. Sarno has finished his 'practice' and has hit the nail on the head with this! Denial is a very powerful thing, and once the issues are acknowledged and validated, they (and the denial) find their way to release a person. It seems Dr. Sarno's sermon is that it's okay to be angry, but not okay to hide it for fear of what others will think. It hurts only the person who bottles the anger.
Healing Back Pain.......2007-09-17
It is a very useful tool.
Great support for one struggling with RSI.
Thank you!
Life changing book........2007-09-07
This book is incredible and John Sarno really explains his practice well. The whole theory is fascinating and can be life changing if you allow it. I highly recommend this book especially if you have "tried everything" for your back pain and only get temporary relief.
A MONEY-BACK GAURANTEE..........2007-09-03
...would be one sure way to silence any detractors. It worked for me and has obviously worked for others. It will obviously not work for everyone, particularly those with actual physical disorders. The hour or two it takes to read this book and the $15 to purchase it for the possible relief of chronic back pain? I'd say it's worth the risk. Or you could go throw your cash at a pseudo-doctor who has no vested interest in your getting well. (When is the last time you turned away an opportunity to increase your income?)

Informative business guide to strategy.......2006-08-23
I bought this book for a college class and kept it. While it is not the most exciting book, the case studies are an excellent guide to a wide range of business plans and strategies. The cases are divided into four categories: single business companies, diversified companies, implementing and executing strategy and ethics & social responsibility. The cases are very complete and interesting. The downside is the shelf life of the book - I would expect a new edition before long.
Student Review.......2005-12-10
I am a student majoring in Business Administration who recently used this text in an upper-level management course. The book's writing is utterly superfluous. Boredom was frequently my sentiment as I weeded through unnecessarily labyrinthine sentences. The ideas in the book were occasionally interesting, but were usually ideas I had already developed on my own via simple intuition. Perhaps the most valuable part of the text is the section of case studies. This closing segment of the book contains many great ideas for student projects. Overall, this text disappoints me as a student
Product Still to be Used.......2005-08-23
I will begin using this product next week, and will be in a better position to review it after my six week module.
Book Description
In this new edition of their best seller, Richard K. James and Burl E. Gilliland present the latest research, theories, and techniques of this rapidly evolving field, along with case material from real crisis situations. Authoritative, class-tested, and based on the authors'extensive experience teaching crisis intervention courses, the book includes information on cutting-edge topics such as cybercounseling via the Internet and compassion fatigue. The Fifth Edition gives students the skills and strategies they need to take crisis intervention theory and technique out of the classroom and onto the street.
Customer Reviews:
Good Information.......2007-10-07
I work as a Crisis Intervention Specialist for a hospital, so I thought that this information would be useful, as I was taking a graduate level class in Crisis Intervention. I think that this is a good book for someone that is just starting out, but for a seasoned veteran, I thought that it wsn't that helpful.
Not Bad. . . .......2007-06-01
The authors definitely know their material, but I agree with the review by, "a reader," in relation to how much swearing they put in with dialogues. I also thought that the dialogues were contrived with no attempt at making them seem realistic. I got the impression that the writer may not have been a therapist and was playing make-believe, "If I was at the top of my field in psychology and having suicidal thoughts, this is what I would say and this is how I would respond to someone like that." I just don't see some of the people being as straight-foreward with a therapist or colleague as they conveyed and even in the study groups we'd read some of this out loud and yell, "IN MY DREAMS!"
James and Gilliand are not the James brothers by any stretch of the imagination. (I am referring to the James brothers-- one was a psychologist who wrote like a writer and the other was a writer who wrote like a psychologist.)
The book was adequate for what my prof used it for: it was a springboard for discussion in class and prepared us to go further in our education to becoming crises intervention specialists.
Skip the profanity.......2003-10-13
A fairly good text, it probably covers the field better than other available sources. However, the selection of illustrations seem to be chosen based on how much profanity they can include. I realize that crisis situations involve people who don't monitor their usage, but why include every F--- and other curse word when they aren't needed to convey the meaning.
I teach large classes and probably won't adopt this title because of the gratuitous inclusion of verbal static.
An invaluable tool in the field of mental health........1999-01-04
Gilliland and James have successfully created an extremely comprehensive introduction to crisis intervention methodology in this text.
While lacking some historical perspective on the development of this methodology, the book incorporates a variety tools useful to the mental health professional. These tools well make up for the exclusion of a short history on crisis intervention.
The authors clearly defined various helping situations (i.e., suicide, sexual assault, spousal abuse, and chemical dependency) and demonstrated how their applications assisted in the resolution of these issues. Furthermore, Gilliland and James added the sections on extreme circumstances, such as hostage taking, as well as professional concerns, such as burnout.
For those entering the field, this text provides a wealth of information. Those that are well seasoned will still find this a useful reference.
On first glance, I was surprised to find this text so easily read, particularly when dealing with such a serious subject, yet I have returned to it time and again in my own practice for ideas and direction.
Thank you.

CRAFTING AND EXECUTING STRATEGY.......2007-09-22
IT TOOK A WHILE FOR THE TEXTBOOK TO REACH ME. I WAS DISAPPOINTED WITH HOW SLOW THE DELIVERY PROCESS WAS AND ALMOST DIDN'T HAVE THE TEXT IN TIME FOR CLASS. SERVICE AND DELIVERY COULD BE MUCH MORE PROMPT.
Perfect!.......2007-09-20
This book is just what I need for my class - Strategic Management - the one class I absolutely have to take in order to graduate since I'm a Business major.
Excellent Product+Service from Amazon.com.......2007-03-13
This was the best product i've ever purchased from Amazon.com. Until most recently, I've only bought textbooks from Amazon, and that too at a very short notice (the kind of lazy person that I am!).. and Amazon has really kept me happy!
This is a great book for those taking a course on Strategic Management, and for those who are not, but are so much more interested in learning so much about how all those CEOs do their work. This book has got it all, complete with real-world case studies of your most admired corporations, how they've been faring good or bad, and develops a real deep insight into the precedant variables that have caused it's current performance. This book is superb for those who wish to analyze the nuances of what it takes to run a business (any business). Highly Recommended!
About Amazon, I can't thank them enough. I needed the book within three days --I had a class assignment due in that time, and lazy that I am, I had to wait until the last minute to order it. But, thanks to Amazon's 2-day "guaranteed" shipping that I received it on the 2nd day. Guaranteed!
Also highly recommended to all those who want it "fast"...!

This comprehensive, market-leading text emphasizes the three major driving forces behind e-commerce: technology change, business development, and social controversies. Each of these driving forces is represented in every chapter, and together they provide a coherent conceptual framework for understanding e-commerce, typical of Laudon books. The book offers in-depth and comprehensive coverage of concepts in marketing, economics, IS/IT, privacy and intellectual property. The book contains numerous case studies and an additional case book is available.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent textbook on E-commerce.......2006-04-05
I just received the new edition of Laudon and Traver's textbook on e-commerce and think its just great! I previously used the 2nd edition, which I also loved, and this new edition lives up to its predecessor. It contains all new and updated information and is extremely current. Its so well-written that it doesn't read like a textbook at all. I highly recommend it to anyone interesting in learning about e-commerce.
Good, but dated...........2005-11-26
I have used this textbook for several years - while it is a good basic source of information, it badly needs updating and supplementation in several important areas: RFID is not mentioned; Mobile/hand set E-Commerce is covered at a surface level, Search Engine and major Portal marketing needs updating, and much of the data are 3+ years old - very old given the rapid changes taking place.
If you are teaching an E-Commerce course from a Marketing perspective, with this book as the base, be prepared to suppement this textbook with books such as Spychips, and student subscriptions to WSJ or NY Times. Ad Age is another excellent supplementary information source.
This is one of the few areas in business where the textbook should be updated every 2 years.
Note from Spring 07 - the newer edition is better but still requires supplementation on areas auch as RFID and security.
Great Buy.......2005-10-04
This was a great buy, The book came in the indicated condition and has been a great help!
E-Commerce: Business, Technology, Society.......2005-08-18
Good book, easy to read and informative. Gives a good overview of e-commerce and introduces you into the business giving you a historical perspective and good hints to develop you own site.
Practical, Informative, and Interesting.......2005-07-06
This is a college level text book that is actually interesting. It is very well written and most importantly, it is NOT boring. It's amazing how easy it is to read such a large book in a short amount of time when the book is well written. You will be able to actually design and learn how to host your own E-Commerce web site after reading this book. And it's a lot less expensive than you might think. This book is expensive but well worth it with excellent print and illustrations. It's easy to see that a lot of work went into this gigantic hardbound masterpiece.
Book Description
In this first new and totally revised edition of the 150,000–copy underground bestseller, The E–Myth, Michael Gerber dispels the myths surrounding starting your own business and shows how commonplace assumptions can get in the way of running a business. He walks you through the steps in the life of a business from entrepreneurial infancy, through adolescent growing pains, to the mature entrepreneurial perspective, the guiding light of all businesses that succeed. He then shows how to apply the lessons of franchising to any business 執hether or not it is a franchise. Finally, Gerber draws the vital, often overlooked distinction between working on your business and working in. your business. After you have read The E–Myth Revisited, you will truly be able to grow your business in a predictable and productive way.
Customer Reviews:
Best yet!.......2007-10-20
This is simply required reading for anyone who is in business or is thinking about being in business for themselves. No-one tells a better business fable than Michael Berger and when you then add his expertise in the business arena, you have a winner. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. It was an easy, fairly quick read with a powerful punch. Thank you.
Know Yourself.......2007-10-19
I have read and re-read this book (and the original) many times over the past 15 years.
With the first reading I was struck at how many people I knew that fit perfectly into the nutshell descriptions of individuals with locked in mind-sets presented!
The entrepreneurial seizure; The Fat Guy & The Skinny Guy; The Entrepreneur & Manager & Technician; customers Sam Tommy and Mary; Bookkeeper Harry; the suppliers, the improperly trained helpers, the desperate owner, and many others. I KNEW these people! Or at least the essence of them.
With later readings I became aware of ALL of them as being aspects of my own self, and the possibilities each offered. Attitude is Everything! Change the attitude, change the outcome!
For me, this is the main value of the book, learning to understand myself, and why I do the things I do.
I feel the overview presented by the E myth should be understood by each new business owner BEFORE making that first leap.
No one book can be all things to all people, but for those interested in starting or improving a business, this one comes close.
In my mind, there is only one minor failing in the book. It does not examine in great enough detail why people would want to work for you. Success comes from helping other people get what they want. What are their interests, dreams and goals? How can you help them reach what THEY want? Why would they want YOU to succeed?
Great businesses can only exist if they have great people.
All in all, this is my most valuable Business Book.
Grade School Lessons & E-Myth Acadamy Advertisement .......2007-10-04
This is, at best the beginning part of a working business solution. Yes, Gerber makes a valid point about the E-myth concept (read other reviews if you don't know the concept) but it's really for beginners (newbs). All his books are really just advertisements, for his E-Myth Academy consulting business in the back of all his books. There is nearly no practical information. He makes his point about the E-Myth, then masterbates it endlesly, re-making that point six ways to Sunday, add nausium and leaves you wondering, well, but what should I do? Well, little lost lamb (newb), go to E-Myth web site or call the 800 number where they have a fast talking sales crew and sign up for 2 years of 700 plus a month (I haven't checked lately) consultation/classes.
After you get the point that to make your technical skill pay/function as a business you need to have business skills/know how. You can sign up for the 700 plus per month for 2 years advertised in the back of his books. Start looking elsewhere for actual practical information. Because there are no E-myth books or tapes that have that information. You can do a lot for your business with that kind of money. I'm always shocked at how newbs starting businesses throw money around. Something to buy and a place to buy it, no matter how pretty it all is, doesn't make a successful business, In my observations, it's the major reason new businesses fail. I'm sure some of you with deep pockets or You corperate types who have never had to find the guts or earn the money to build a small business without Sugar Daddy Warbucks help will think I'm wrong. This E-Myth stuff is valid but it it's grade school lessons made to look like some kind of super-profound truth/solution. Well, it is, grade school true, now what Mr. Gerber, where's the solutions, spend, what, nearly 17,000 Sign up for what I thought I was getting when I bought the Books and tapes? What a greedy little tight wad! When are you going to write a book with substance? Hey Newbs! Trust me, yes you need real business skills, there are plenty of great business books out there, take some of that 17,000 and buy some and be careful with the rest you're going to need it.

Food & Beverage Cost Control.......2002-06-12
As a culinary educator, I find this book both informative and user-friendly. The Excel spreadsheets and "Fun on the Web" exercises add interesting and useful technological components. The text gets to the point on all issues without belaboring the theoretical aspects of food and beverage cost controls. The book covers junior and senior level concepts in a readable format suitable for freshmen and sophomores. It is a book for all levels with real life examples. I would recommend it to anyone, be it from education or industry.
An excellent edition!.......2001-06-19
This book is a must-read for any foodservice manager who is interested in an accurate, to the point, and technologically advanced review of food and beverage cost control methods. Controlling labor and food costs have never been more important than in today's environment. Those managers who master control procedures will succeed, and this book helps them to do just that.
The author's use of Excel spreadsheets really helps learning, as does the large number of realistic industry examples. Even the Internet plays a part in the book's usefulness when the authors refer readers to applicable web sites. Best of all, the concepts (especially those related to labor control) that are presented are useful to the managers I work with regardless of their culture or even the continent in which they work.
I recommend the book to all hospitality managers, and I would recommend it to any serious student of hospitality.
