"Handheld devices cannot be designed simply as copies of their desktop counterparts; they have smaller displays, trickier input mechanisms, less memory, reduced storage capacity, and less powerful operating systems. Understanding the specific challenges of technology on the move is the first step towards designing great products for handheld devices. Handheld Usability is a practical, hands-on guide to designing interfaces for handheld, electronic computing and communication devices, including e-mail pagers, Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) and mobile telephone handsets. This book will give you the skills you need to: Understand the types of handheld devices and their differences Design user interfaces for handheld devices Design user interfaces for the wireless Web (WAP) Prototype user interfaces for handheld devices · Conduct usability tests on prototypes and live, handheld product applications Don't reinvent the wheel! The lack of standardization in interface design doesn't mean that you have to start from scratch every time. This 'plain English' guide will help you to plan your own usability tests as part of the design and development process, and let you learn from insights on design gained from real life experience. With so many handheld devices to choose from, usability can be a very powerful distinguishing factor. Well designed products mean happy users, and satisfied customers become loyal customers. With the help of Handheld Usability you can give the customer what they want, and get it right first time."
Customer Reviews:
The worst usability book ever..........2006-01-10
I truly cannot recommend this book to anybody who has any knowledge about UI design. Not even if you don't have experience in designing for handheld devices. This book has nothing to offer for you. If you are just starting to study usability, there are far better books out there.
I bought this book when it came out due to fact that there are no books about handheld usability. I had high hopes that it would provide new information about the area. Instead I found out that it was merely a copy paste book, which had nothing to offer. Many of my colleagues read the book also and none had anything good to say about the book.
Scott Weiss probably noticed that there are no books about the subject and decided to make money. With a price as high as 60$ he is probably succeeding.
Was helpful for my final year dissertation.......2004-01-10
This was the only book specific to handheld/mobile devices that discussed usability testing.
It is divided into short, concise sections that are easy to read and understand. The sections form a good basis on how to approach designing and testing a system. It has some very good pointers. The only thing was that it was too short!
The book was very, very helpful but it wasn't long enough and doesn't provide working examples. It just tells you the points that you should be considering when you are building a usable system. It doesn't go too in depth on any of the sections either.
Essential.......2003-10-14
Zipf's law states that common words are very common, and that uncommon words are combinations of uncommon words. For example if you start typing the letters `th' then you are probably trying to write the word `the' rather than `theologian'. Applying this simple insight to mobile phones gave us predictive text entry, where a small dictionary allows the phone to guess the word that the user is most likely trying to enter. For example if you press the keys `82' while entering a text message on a modern phone, the phone will predict `the' as your word. This invention allows QWERTY-snobs like me to approach the speeds of Finnish teenagers in tapping text messages on a mobile phone.
Such innovation is just amusingly clever on a PC, but on the small screens of handheld devices, it is essential. A good user interface converts a small device from a limiting gadget to a useful tool. European consumers' `wapathetic' response to WAP-enable phones was due to over hyping by the telecommunications industry, but also poor usability of the devices.
So a textbook on the topic is certainly appropriate.
Handheld usability defines handheld devices as highly portable machines that can operate with no cables and can be operated within one's hand. In addition, they must either allow the addition of applications or support internet connectivity. So the book's focus includes handheld computers (such as Palm-powered machines and Pocket PCs) and mobile phones (with WAP, i-mode or email connectivity) but excludes devices such as music players.
Naturally the discussion includes details of devices that are obsolete. Such is usually the case with any discussion of the details in information technology. But the principles are timeless and the practices will remain practical.
Perhaps the most useful chapter is the one on prototyping. Weiss' advice is that this should be done with a pen and several pieces of paper. For example the designer would draw the first screen on the paper. The user would then say what he or she expects to see on interacting with each element of the "screen". During this feedback, the designer would draw the next screen, and again ask the user what he or she expects. This technique is of course cheap but I was surprised by its effectiveness. No doubt Weiss' clients also found it useful.
If your team is designing applications for handheld devices, consider hiring Weiss. If you cannot afford that, buy his book. You cannot afford not to.
Review appeared in British Medical Informatics Today, Issue 41
Too bad.......2003-03-05
Don't buy this book.
I cannot find any usabiltiy testing technique in this book. Just explain what PDA and Palms are and all thing we already knew. Alsom appendix is too long.
I don't want to know Palm history. Why author explain detail about each funtion of Palm or PDA?
Save your money!
You'll find better elsewhere, and nowhere........2003-03-05
I am an experienced interface designer who has never designed for a handheld. So, when I faced a new project that would be deployed on a handheld, I looked here to further my education. This is the only book I could find that is specific to handhelds.
When I was considering this book I read seven glowing reviews, and one total pan. The pan got it right. This book may be more useful for someone who knows very little about interaction design, usability testing, prototyping, and all that, and who isn't interested in gaining more than a superficial understanding of these topics. (If you are new to usability design, you'll find a much better place to start with Mayhew's "The Usability Engineering Lifecycle: A Practitioner's Handbook for User Interface Design.") If, however, you are a usability professional looking for insight on how you need to think differently now that your screen is the size of a Post-it note, wait for the next book to be written. I could have written this book, and the sum of my handheld experience is that I own a Palm and a cell phone.

Customer Reviews:
Ugh........2003-04-05
This really seems like a recycled and rehashed book quickly put together in order to rush a "new topic" to print. I'm pretty sure I recognize this content from other books I've seen on the shelf. Even the paper quality seems recycled! I got this one in the mail, and it already was yellowed - the pages seem like newsprint. I found very little value in this book, content wise. There are definitely better ones out on the market by the gurus on the subject!
Wooooo Hooooo - it's great!!.......2002-07-08
Love it.
It taught me everything I needed to know to design a flash site for a mobile phone. The site allows users to order alcohol at rock bottom prices in Spain.
By the way, I know this guy and he is great.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent overview.......2005-07-08
I'm looking at doing a project involving a distributed ad-hoc sensor/actuator network. Reading data sheets from various vendors is fine, but I wanted an overall look at the theoretical landscape to get myself oriented. This book did a great job of presenting the state of the art - problems, solutions, research areas. It uses specific technology examples to motivate the discussion, but its focus on fundamentals should make it widely applicable and relevant for some years to come.
Excellent survey of the technology.......2005-03-02
This book is a good entry point for someone wishing to learn about wireless computing and communication. It provides a broad survey of the various kinds of wireless applications and implementation design patterns, discussing the technology performance limitations and trade-offs that motivate each design decision. The viability and effectiveness of every design choice depends upon the other choices taken, motivating many complex mathematical optimization problems.
I began reading this book with the assumption that wireless application design rested on the same principles as the design of ordinary distributed computer systems, save for a narrower communication bandwidth, and occasional planned disconnections. This book made me realize that things are much more complicated in the wireless world. In ordinary distributed systems, the main challenge is the design of a static scheme for distributing work among communicating components. Once that is done, one can pretty much separate the infrastructure oriented code from the business logic. In the wireless world, the communication bandwidth's variability and lack of reliability requires the distribution of tasks to react to changing network conditions; this radically increases the difficulty of separating infrastructure concerns from business logic. The limitations of typical mobile devices (small memory, limited power, and slow processor speed) only add to the developer's burden. In designing an application for a pre-existing wireless system, traditional methods of program organization may not be appropriate. The need to discover or invent algorithms that take into account a mobile network's unique characteristics creates a challenge somewhat akin to that faced by the early users of novel massively-parallel computer architectures.
One learns that there are no general purpose easy answers to these problems, but the book does an excellent job in laying out the issues, concerns and approaches, while providing ample bibliographies of published research that readers can delve into for their specific problem. The reader comes away with a familiarity in the terms, concepts and acronyms used in the wireless community, providing an excellent foundation for further reading in the literature (which, unfortunately, is not always as well-written or accessible to the newcomer as is this text).
A surprisingly easy read for such a technical topic.......2005-02-26
The importance of this book is due to the consumer demand for wireless devices. People are getting accustomed to the idea of carrying PDAs and having wireless connections at home, office, and even coffeehouses. But how can you secure the connection? How fast can you send data? How do you even know that there's something to connect to nearby?
I've just joined a project in my job that deals with wireless communication, and I had only superficial knowledge of the area. What I got out of this book was an awareness of all the issues and tradeoffs involved in the field. I also found the text to be filled with many explanations, so it was a surprisingly easy read for such a technical topic. It's very up to date as the last few chapters discuss WiMAX.
Average customer rating:
- An excellent and essential in-depth reference of mobile computing
- Excellent book on smartphone and mobile computing technologies
- Very good book that delves deep into the technology and uses

Fantastic Overview and well documented.......2005-11-11
Superb read, I especially like the 2 chapter Wireless Network overview and the Wirelesee Value for explaining complex issues in a straightforward manner. This book brings you up to speed on the industry, business value and corporate interest in the mobility space. A must buy!!
Good first few chapters.......2005-09-26
My objective was to gain a better understanding of the potential business value of wireless mobility. I am in Sales and new to the wireless mobility space. The technology primer chapters were pretty good with the exception of some Microsoft bias (one of the authors is a Microsoft employee). The book proceeded to go into CGE&Y's approach to gaining business value. Perhaps this book is better suited to an executive who is grappling with understanding how to quantify the value and is interested in purchasing CGE&Y's approach. I did not care for the bias.
Easy Read!!!.......2005-07-22
I enjoyed this book very much. Having a technology background, I knew about this topic before I read the book but I did a learn some new things. It's also a good tool to learn how to explain mobile technologies in simple terms to non-techies and business people. Easy and quick read!!!
Comprehensive, Must-Have Guide to Mobile Technologies.......2005-01-17
This book is super informative, nicely written, and easy to understand. I would recommend it highly to large enterprises interested in mobile technologies and to individuals who are interested in learning more about the burgeoning filed of mobile computing. Highly recommended!
A Must Read.......2005-01-15
This book is an excellent insight into Mobility and Wireless. Good for both newcomers and those inside the industry, I look forward to the next one from these authors.

As existing carriers hire additional engineers and new telecommunications companies get underway, there's ever-increasing demand for people who know about Intelligent Network (IN) operations. Wireless Intelligent Networking explains how the IN works (especially in the United States), particularly the network's means of interacting with mobile communications systems. The book was written by working telecoms engineers, and though it is carefully organized (it's usually pretty easy to find a section on the protocol or other mechanism that interests you, for example), it's a little hard to decode on the first pass because of the nature of the subject. Advice to the reader: have specifications documents (relevant ones are listed in the endnotes) on hand as you read so that you can compare two presentations of the same facts and thus understand more quickly.
Discussion on the protocols that come into play during mobile interaction with the IN includes a fantastic level of detail. To cite one example, the different approaches to Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) taken by IS-764 and IS-771 are explored, and each specification is further explained via a chart that details the flow of messages between parties. Similarly excellent documentation appears for all applicable protocols, established and emerging. The business issues associated with wireless IN are also discussed. The material is good, but for a book-length treatment of emerging telecoms technologies and the industry surrounding them, read Telecommunications Convergence. --David Wall
Topics covered:
- The established and emerging technologies surrounding wireless intelligent networking
- Radio standards
- Wireless network standards
- Third-generation wireless standards
- General-purpose SS7 signaling protocol
- Wireless Intelligent Network (WIN)
- Customized Applications for Mobile Enhanced Logic (CAMEL)
- Market issues
Book Description
Here's an outstanding introduction to intelligent network (IN) concepts, technology, and applications for use in mobile communications networks. It helps assure your success in bringing new services to market by clearly explaining the technology, relevant standards, marketability concerns, product development issues, and even evolutionary trends.
This book is extremely useful in helping service developers understand the real-world issues involved with bringing new services to market, and equally valuable in educating ex-wireline professionals and non-technical executives on IN mobile networking issues and technology.
If you're new to the business, you'll appreciate the discussions of wireless IN standards, recommended business strategies, and applications. More experienced readers will learn more about the technology behind roaming, and the convergence of wireless and Internet communications.
Distinguishing this book from others in the field, and of particular value to more advanced readers, is the coverage of SS7, INAP, GSM, CAMEL, ANSI-41/WIN, ISUP loopback signaling, and proprietary IN technologies.
All readers will find the book a superb reference with clear descriptions, helpful diagrams, and an extensive glossary covering everything from basic mobile concepts to a detailed overview of the IN Conceptual Model.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent general treatment of WIN........2001-10-16
The telecommunications industry needs a lot of standards and
detailed information for true inter-operability. So, no book
is going to be perfect in its coverage of the material - there
is simply too much information.
Having said that, I find this book to be an excellent way to
understand the issues associated with WIN. It provides the basis
for further study and points people in the right direction for
increasing their knowledge.
I use this book as a basic reference and recommend it highly.
You will not go wrong reading this book - whether you are a
wireless telecom professional (which I am) or not.
An excellent multi-disciplinary text.......2001-07-01
The book succeeds in presenting an inherently complex and multi-disciplinary subject in a clear manner with sufficient references to allow further study as needed.
The book provides a broad view of wireless networking, including financial, market, and technical views. The technical information is well organized and presented from more than one perspective. Rather than presenting volumes of minute details, architectural principals are introduced and illuminated.
This is one of the outstanding technical books that I have ever read. I would highly recommend it to experienced hands in the fields of wireless or wireline voice networks.
I would also recommend it to beginners with the following cavaet: this book plumbs some fairly deep waters, and does not delve too deeply into the related fields that are the building blocks of Wireless Intellegent Networking. SS7, AIN, PSTN architecture, and mobility management are all presented, but having some previous background (or somebody handy who can fill in details) would be a big help.
A "dot.safe" investment.......2001-03-26
Wireless Intelligent Networking is an excellent publication with rare characteristics: easy to read, well organized and extremely efficient in what concerns quantity and quality of information. Technical protocols, market trends, services deployment, integration, among other IN hot issues are thoroughly dissected in WIN. This is definitely an essential tool for anyone in the Telco business, saving time and money in training for beginners and helping experts on a daily basis. A "dot.safe" investment for any company in the industry!

Excellent.......2000-12-13
This is a unique book that compares the intelligent networking standards, the ANSI-41 and GSM. It not only provides useful technical information but also covers the issues pertaining to the wireless intelligent market. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is interested in WIN and CAMEL.
