You'll get much better luck and practice with the online free material than this book

2 out of 5 stars SSDD - Much like it's predecessor (Site Server).......2005-09-21

Like Site Server - you won't find a ton of material that is actually useful about this technology.
[...]
as well as other online resources.

Sorry, guy. We want to give you a big pat on the back, but that's kind of improbable under the current book conditions. This has been a current problem since back in the day when Site Server first pushed into the marketplace (if you will recall that mess, and that BizTalk's features used to be part of the pipeline configurator mechanism for extending SS-EC to full EC-functionality).

Give it another try. Still, something is better than nothing, but in terms of spending personal money, I'll pass.

4 out of 5 stars The Only Book Availalbe for BizTalk 2004.......2005-08-30

I understand the frastrations of the other reviewers towards this book. BizTalk 2004 is quite different from the earlier versions. BizTalk 2004 is not well documented and there is no other reference book available. Many of us waited anxiously for the arrival of this book and hoped it would biring us extensive and in-depth coverage beyond what was available online, in particular since one of the authors is Scott Woodgate, the product manager of BizTalk, wellknown in BizTalk community.

To be fair, I believe this book desearves more than the current 2-star rating of average customer review. The authors promised "complete coverage" and they did a reasonable job to cover this product. If you are new to BizTalk, you have not choice. You should read this book since it is an authorative introduction.

Scott, I give you 4-star rating to encourage you to provide more in-depth material online at your blog site or in another book.

1 out of 5 stars shoddy and replete with errors of ommission and commission.......2005-07-20

The least the authors can do is review their own work and provide their readers with an errata or a list of corrections for the numerous errors in the book.

I would love to get my money back. Reselling it in the used-book market would be a disservice to the buyers.

2 out of 5 stars Not good enough, Microsoft!.......2005-07-20

With so many errors, I wonder if the authors have even bothered to read through the book after writing it.
They even change the project and solution names during some of the examples.
Maybe that's not a big deal after all, but it's very annoying.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful view on working with Serivce Providers.......2001-08-28

Having worked as a consultant for one of the main firms, I have worked on many Service provider assignments. Usually they involve either planing for the startup of a new provider or starting new services within an existing one. One reading this book I found it very true to life and it provides excellent checklists both as reminder to the experienced and also to aid the novices in what needs to be done. The case studies show alot of the thought processes these providers go through and I would highly recommend this book for anyone working in a Service Provider or anyone thinking of starting one up.

3 out of 5 stars Good to learn how you can use .NET technologies.......2004-10-07

You'll go though the process of creating an e-commerce site. Each process is not explain in great detail. There are general explation of each .NET topic and MS (.NET) servers like SQL server and BizTalk server.

If you want to have a general idea on how you can take advantage of .NET and MS products, I recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY THIS BOOK!!!!.......2004-07-08

It's a ok book, but the download code dose not work. The book is useless without the code.
And don't expect any help from the Publisher, you won't get any!
So save your money and buy another book instead!

2 out of 5 stars Too focused on a particular solution.......2003-06-22

I buy this book to help learn .NET to take MicroSoft tests. Did not know book is writen for beta .NET. I did not pass test since I learned from wrong version.

DO NOT BUY. Is old and no help.

5 out of 5 stars Good overview.......2002-09-26

This book provides an exellence big picture of .NET in developing an e-commerce website. It will definitely save you a lot of time in developing a website. It does not provide in detail on how do you implement it though. You would need specific books on asp.net and on VB.net or C# to complement it.

Book Description

This book traces the development of e-commerce and e-business systems using the new technologies such as web servers, CORBA, HTML, XML, and Java. It specifically looks at challenging applications where major problems in performance and reliability need to be addressed. Using a Òbottom-upÓ approach, this book discusses clients and servers along with distributed development paradigms, before moving on to more specific technologies that are examples of the above concepts. This book also covers advanced topics, such as Internet security, concurrency, agents, and ubiquitous/mobile computing. Business professionals interested in integrating new technologies into their e-business plans and general readers interested in developing e-commerce Web sites and distributed applications using the Internet.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Service!!!.......2002-10-22

Every thing was done professionally, I am complete satisfied with the service I recieved.

5 out of 5 stars Realistic college text; useful to working professionals.......2002-08-24

This book was written as a college-level text. It also targets IT professionals who need to quickly understand the differences between e-commerce applications and traditional information systems as a secondary audience.

As a college-level text this book is one of the few that will prepare students for the real world. The scope of topics, level of detail, and carefully chosen case studies are impressive because they capture the key knowledge areas and issues that working professionals deal with.

As a refresher for working professionals who need to understand the big picture and intermediate details associated with e-commerce applications this book's wide coverage of topics makes it ideal. While students will need to work through the entire book, an IT professional can choose the topic areas selectively. For example, the chapter on E-commerce applications that covers supply chain management, e-tialing and auction sites will have more appeal to a working professional, while the chapters on programming will probably capture a student's interest.

Additional features that will be of interest to each audience include:

- Students and Instructors: (1) CD ROM that comes with the book contains exercises, source code, and additional study material, (2) a companion web site that provides 296 PowerPoint slides that augment the course, and (3) links to over 750 web sites that reinforce the lessons.

- Working professionals: the CD ROM that comes with the book contains the full text of the book, which will allow searching for any topic or keyword. This is an excellent research resource, that is all the more valuable since the book is up-to-date and covers current technologies (Java, relational databases, XML, etc.), as well as important business issues.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Should have had "dot.com" at the end of the title.......2001-03-21

This book was like the now rapidly failing "dot.coms". A title to grab you but no content. This is not a book about e-business despite what it says on the cover! There is hardly anything on e-business let alone how you can use App. Servers to get e-business going. Even the stuff on App. Servers wasn't very detailed. This is like a vanity press book.

1 out of 5 stars Lots of Preamble, Little in the Way of Insights.......2001-03-15

A great example that having Word 7 on a computer does not automatically qualify you to think you are a writer. This book, despite its promising title, devotes undue space and effort to introduction, upon introduction and does not bother to get into too much details. The title should read "A High Level Overview of App. Servers". If you know your basic Web stuff (like what Java, HTML, XML is) this book will leave dangling ... constantly asking "where is the beef?" Not a book for developers who want to know what they may be getting into.

      5 out of 5 stars Thanks.......2002-05-17

I don't usually leave comments on books I've purchased through Amazon or anywhere else, but I felt compelled to do so on this one. Not only did I gain a good understanding of SAP Basis Administration, but the first hand knowledge shared from the author who's been there - done that, was very helpful. The hints and tips gained from this book will go into my own personal "cookbook" for sure. Nice work, for once I feel like I got my money's worth.

5 out of 5 stars Love the book!.......2002-04-19

I've been doing Basis Admin work for over 5 years now, and thought I knew just about all there was too know about it. This book showed me some hints and tips I never even thought of, and you can bet I'll use them in my job. Finally, a book written by someone who's been there and done it, and not by a professional writer who's never even touched SAP. Good work Robert!

      1 out of 5 stars I WANT MORE.......2001-12-18

Why can't someone write an IN DEPTH BOOK on SAP BASIS? I feel like the real inside information is not being shared by these so called "experts". We've all taken BASIS 101 - now give us more! I'm still waiting for a book that gives MORE.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Addition.......2001-03-14

I have found this book to be a great addition to my collection of books on SAP. The author's hands on approach is a welcome change to other "how to" books on the market today. I highly recommend it.

      1 out of 5 stars Use less.......2001-01-13

I am new to this field. I bought this book and I thought It can help me in creating client and users. But after going thru all the Chapter I could not create even a single user successfully. This book covers most of the parts but it does not cover in depth

1 out of 5 stars Not a Good Representation of BizTalk.......2002-01-05

It seems the author is trying to be cute (the poem up front was a early warning) and the flip attempts at Microsoft bashing sprinkled about just demonstrates an immaturity in general in his view of the software marketplace, and an absence of objectivity overall. The book has lots of B2B examples that just recently died off with the dot.com crash of 2000-2001. All in all, people will read this stuff for free in the industry press and airline magazines, but will feel ripped-off if the paid cash for it.

5 out of 5 stars Managers this is for YOU.......2001-08-25

This book gave me a complete overview of BizTalk and its role in B2B products. Being an IT Director I needed a book that explained BizTalk and all the related technologies to help me understand its strategic role. This book is very thorough.

      1 out of 5 stars Use "Google".......2001-05-14

This book might be good for high-level manager, however, a technologist is better off using the web to get more information than presented in this book.

1 out of 5 stars The worst Book I have read about Biztalk.......2001-03-06

This Book is not technical enough. It is more theoretical, so if you have to implement Biztalk, then I will recommand the Biztalk Book from Microsoft Press or Wrox.

      5 out of 5 stars Perfect book.......2001-12-06

This is the best book for learning about CS2K. Author has done a great job.

1 out of 5 stars Too introductory. Not worth spending money for it.......2001-11-29

This is one of those books that content is way too introductory for any serious IT prfessionals that it is not even useful to be used as a reference for any real-world work we do. It is probably for those who wants to learn very basic of the product. Not worth spending money for.

4 out of 5 stars Good For beginner to study.......2001-11-01

This book is good for beginner to set up the e-commerce. It's show you all basic you need to know and has good detail of example.

      4 out of 5 stars Nicely written.......2001-09-21

Nicely written; summarises the main features of Commerce Server 2000 and has some nice overviews of product features as well as detailed drill-downs to look at the code. This books is a useful companion to the CS2K SDK and the Wrox CS2K book. A gripe which I have levelled at the Wrox book can also be aimed at this: It focuses very heavily on the example Retail site which has received near universal criticism for some of its architectural features on the CS2K newsgroups.

4 out of 5 stars Good for professional and non professional.......2001-08-22

I am working with MS commerce server 2000 for almost 1 year and our company was one of first companies which use CS2000.
