Introduction to Risk Management and Insurance.......2007-01-09
Excellent reference book and very descriptive definitions of insurance concepts
A good book.......2006-11-10
For an entry level class on insurance this is a good book to start with.
Should be required reading for Undergrad Business.......2006-07-18
Definitely worth reading, even if not required for a class. A very accessible introduction to the field of Risk Management along with useful, practical information about the kinds of insurance contracts that will be encountered by consumers and businesses alike.
This, and introductory business law should be taught to all undergraduate b-school students. A great book, much better and more useful than a certain black-and-yellow book about insurance that you might be tempted to order.
5 Stars
Awesome Text!.......2003-05-12
This book is user-friendly, and students really like it. The only thing they don't like is the price, but, every intro text like this is over $100 these days. I really love this text for teaching my introductory classes.
The best introduction to a complicated subject available........1997-09-05
Extremely well written, many current examples and court cases, raises important social aspects of the insurance transaction. Covers issues important to consumers expecially frequently purchased insurance contracts

Book Description
A captive insurance company is, in a nutshell, an insurance company formed by a business owner to insure the risks of the operating business. The operating business pays premiums to the captive, and the captive insures the risks of the operating business. A captive is much more than an exotic form of self-insurance: It is the creation of a new insurance company that has the potential to grow from being a mere captive into a full-blown insurance company seeking to profit from underwriting the risks of others. Adkisson's Captive Insurance Companies provides a basic introduction to captives and their benefits, including: utilize your own experience ratings; recapture underwriting profits; underwrite exposed risks and deductibles; access the reinsurance markets; and transfer wealth between generations. This book also provides a unique look at the wealth transfer, accumulation and preservation advantages of captives, as well as an overview of the types of captives, taxation of captives, and captive domiciles.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent starting point.......2007-03-09
Jay Adkisson's book on captive insurance companies is a good starting point for anyone who wants an overview of an often overlooked or misunderstood subject. The book is a little heavy on statutes and some case law, but otherwise gives an excellent introduction to the benefits and risks of establishing and maintaining these structures.
Very Helpful.......2007-01-23
I'm in the process of determining whether a captive makes sense for my company. Mr. Adkisson's guide is very imformative. He is a little weak in his pure insurance knowledge but the concepts are more creative and thorough than others I have researched.
Great Intro to Captives.......2006-12-19
As an advisor, I've had clients repeatedly ask me about captive insurance companies but I didn't know much more about them and simply referred them to people like Jay who dealt with them. They always seemed like a "black box" planning technique where the secrets of how they worked were hidden from the unitiated. With this book, Jay opens that box and gives a great explanation of what captive insurance companies are, how they work, what it takes to get them licensed, how they are taxed, what policies they can issue, where they can be formed, and a bunch of other stuff that helps advisors like me understand the basic concept. I think this would be a great book to give as a gift to clients who were interested in captives as it explains their benefits -- and limitations -- quite clearly.

Book Description
Revisions and additions make the second edition an even better teaching and learning tool of the basic principles of insurance and risk with their special application to the aviation industry. A foundation of general knowledge is provided in a subject matter that plays a significant role in any aviation-related business. A number of the chapters have been completely updated to reflect the many industry, market, and legislative changes during the 1900s. The chapter on hull and liability contracts includes "Insurance Considerations for Business Aircraft Owners." This new section covers insurance requirements for companies operating aircraft under various arrangements including joint ownership, interchange agreement, time-sharing agreement, exclusive dry lease, management company, and fractional ownership. Appendixes include current aviation policies, endorsements, and applications as well as self-tests. College students, corporate pilots or fixed base operators, and individuals in the insurance business will gain a broad understanding of insurance and risk management applicable to the aviation enterprise.
Customer Reviews:
Alexander Wells is Without Peer in his Knowledge.......2004-01-27
Anyone who has read any of Alexander Well's texts on the aviation industry knows that he is without peer in his knowledge of the management and operations of the airline industry. He teaches what I believe is still the only course on airline management at any college in the nation and is highly respected for his work.
In this volume, he focuses specifically on the problems of risk and insurance as it applies to the airline industry. Although the book is relatively new, published in 2000, given the events in the industry in the past few years it may already be ripe for a revision. Regardless, the text provides a broad, yet concise, understanding of insurance and risk management as it applies to the aviation industry, both commerical and otherwise.
This book should be required reading for anyone considering a career in aviation management or working in the insurance industry with airlines.
Average customer rating:
- Strongly recommended reading for students of the aviation industry
- Complete introduction to aviation insurance.

Complete introduction to aviation insurance........1999-04-16
This textbook is an excellent resource for those students interested in developing a knowledge base in aviation insurance and risk management. The text descibes the various policies available for pilots, and aviation related companies. It also outlines the many types of risk management techniques used to ensure company solvency. The authors have made a very large and complicated subject into something more understandable.

Book Description
This book offers a mathematical introduction to non-life insurance and, at the same time, to a multitude of applied stochastic processes. It gives detailed discussions of the fundamental models for claim sizes, claim arrivals, the total claim amount, and their probabilistic properties. Throughout the book the language of stochastic processes is used for describing the dynamics of an insurance portfolio in claim size space and time. In addition to the standard actuarial notions, the reader learns about the basic models of modern non-life insurance mathematics: the Poisson, compound Poisson and renewal processes in collective risk theory and heterogeneity and Bühlmann models in experience rating. The reader gets to know how the underlying probabilistic structures allow one to determine premiums in a portfolio or in an individual policy. Special emphasis is given to the phenomena which are caused by large claims in these models. What makes this book special are more than 100 figures and tables illustrating and visualizing the theory. Every section ends with extensive exercises. They are an integral part of this course since they support the access to the theory. The book can serve either as a text for an undergraduate/graduate course on non-life insurance mathematics or applied stochastic processes. Its content is in agreement with the European "Groupe Consultatif" standards. An extensive bibliography, annotated by various comments sections with references to more advanced relevant literature, make the book broadly and easiliy accessible.

An Introduction to Actuarial Studies provides a contemporary guide to actuarial technique and practice. It covers a broad range of topics representing the basic areas of actuarial science including compound interest calculations, demographic theory and techniques, and the pricing and operation of simple life assurance contracts. Numerous worked examples illustrate the principles and techniques described in the text. In addition, the authors provide exercises with solutions to allow the reader to establish confidence in using these techniques.
The text assumes no prior knowledge of actuarial work but requires mathematical knowledge at first year university level and an ability for problem solving. It is designed both for those beginning a career in actuarial work, as well as those interested in learning about basic actuarial tools and the main areas of actuarial practice.
Customer Reviews:
good overview.......2007-01-06
This book provides a good sampling of actuarial studies. It would not be especially helpful for studying for an exam.
Good introductory text.......2003-11-16
This text is a good introduction for a beginner who want to know what an actury does. It introduces actuarial and financial maths. It also involves in some discussion on Insurance companies and their various policies.
Because it is an introductory textbook, it does not require high level of mathematical skills. Overall, it is a good text, deserve to read.
