5 out of 5 stars The only book you need!.......2007-09-10

This book teaches that even if you are not the next Amazon, ebay, or Google, you can still make a million on the internet. You just need to find a niche that is underserved.

I purchased "Starting an Online Business for Dummies" and the reviews were mixed. In someone's reviews, they mentioned this book and said it was much better. They suggested buying this book instead of the Dummies book. I took the advice, and am glad I did!

The book is great because it helps you understand that you don't need to be a billion dollar business to start with. Even small, underserved niche markets can earn a million.

I highly recommend this book if you are considering an ebusiness. It is well worth the money. I have been talking about this book to many people who have asked to borrow the book. I keep telling them to pick up their own copy because I am still using it as a reference! It is a great book!

If you already know what a "blog" is and you're fully proficient in searching the internet with google or yahoo, you're probably too sophisticated for this book. Fox's target are people with very little education (He introduces us at one point to the fancy MBA word, "business plan"). Fox also uses the website he started for his wife and mother as case studies. I guess I should have known better. After all, it is called 'Internet Riches" and has a picture of some guy driving in a brand new convertible on the cover.

Cheryl Russell is articulate and specific in walking a person through the ropes of eBay from square one. She teaches how to do business, not just randomly sell (or try to sell) products. Her book covers details of recordkeeping and how to really grow a large, successful business. She methodically teaches the steps to success and helps the reader see the big picture of growing a business from scratch. Excellent resource!

5 out of 5 stars Do Yourself a Favor and Read This Book.......2007-02-09

Let me tell you why this book is important:

1. Listing fees on ebay can eat you alive if you don't pay attention.
2. Security risks are high on ebay,as its success has brought every low-life in the world into its realm.
3. If you want to make a bunch of money buying and selling goods, ebay is a place to do it.

That said, I believe this book provides as good of an overview of the ebay business as any.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The best textbook for MIS majors that I've seen.......2006-12-07

First let me disclose that I have been a programmer for years (and for some of the businesses described in the book).

In general the book is good.

Pros:
It summarizes the business end of ecommerce very well.
The book covers most of the technical aspects of ecommerce from a high level.
The book is not about abstract, useless business theory that is common in many university business courses; the book is a collection of good case studies of ecommerce.

Cons:
The book chews more than it can swallow given the pace it needs to set for a normal class. Since it needs to stay at certain length, the book doesn't always do a good job explaining the technical aspects of ecommerce with enough detail from a layman's point of view. At times it is more of a review for people already with the knowledge. So unless your technical background is strong and deep (eg you are either a programmer or systems administrator for web servers), there may be a lot of jargon in some areas that will confuse and bore you. Consequently this is probably a senior year book

(The author should take notes from the HeadFirst series of technical books.)

2 out of 5 stars Alot of good information, but not what it should be.......2005-08-04

My heart goes out to Ben Matthews (below) who had this thing for a level 4700. That's nuts. I had this book for a level 222 and it was a complete joke. There's a lot of good information and stories about what makes a good e-commerce site, I'll give it that. But there's nothing in here to really give you an edge as far as this stuff goes. The entire point of this book can be summed up in this statement:

"Look at amazon, look at google and look at yahoo. Look for reasons why they're successfull and take note. Do the same practices in your online sites".

This book is an interesting read, but for a bunch of stories and business jargon it's not worth the money.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing but an e-commerce glossary..........2004-02-03

This book serves as an introduction to e-commerce terms and principles. To me, it reads like a shallow glossary of a large number of e-commerce terms.

Do not get the impression that this will teach you how to carry out e-commerce. Instead, this book merely introduces you to e-commerce terminology. For that, the book serves its purposes, but for anything else, you may be better off looking elsewhere.

I thought it was very expensive considering the fact that all of the information could be found in e-commerce summaries for free on the internet.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Ecommerce Textbook.......2003-04-17

I teach ecommerce at the undergraduate level. I plan to use this book as the backbone for the class. The objectives are tied to the e-Biz+ certification exam from CompTIA, which is a nice feature since CompTIA does a bang-up job on researching the skills needed for entry level employment.

I like the book mainly because it offers the primary business concepts needed by my technical students before they enter the IT job market. My students can't take a lot of business classes, but they still need to know the business side of things. This book gets them the essentials in a one semester format.

Ecommerce is rapidly changing, so it will be tough for a book to keep up. I haven't seen the web site that accompanies the book yet. Hopefully it will be a good supplement to help stay current in a rapidly changing field. The book has a lot of web sites as examples, which can be a mixed blessing since web pages change constantly.

Teachers - the book says it has the usual instructor supplements for classroom teaching as well as online teaching, but I haven't seen them yet. I am using the stuff from the 3rd edition to prepare for my summer class - you will probably need to choose wisely as you review these supplements since they are of mixed quality. I am giving the book 4 stars instead of 5 since I can't vouch for the supplemental materials at this point.

5 out of 5 stars Best and Most Current Textbook Available.......2000-11-06

This is, without a doubt, the best and most current textbook on electronic commerce that is available today (and I understand these authors are planning to have a second edition of the book completed by February 2000 - which should be even MORE current).

The book offers a balanced business-technology approach to the subject of e-commerce and include a great overview of both relevant technologies and business/revenue models. The book includes important issues like legal and international concerns and even has a great little section on managing and staffing Web development projects in the last chapter.

This is the only book on e-commerce that I have seen that actually creates and uses a theory-based organizing framework (they build on Porter's work on value chains). Even though the book was clearly designed to be used in the classroom (it has problem assignments, exercises, and an extensive list of references at the end of each chapter), I think this book would be an excellent resource for a business manager that wanted to learn what all of this e-commerce stuff was all about OR for a techie that wanted to learn something about the business end of e-commerce.

The book is a very easy read and is remarkably interesting (even the chapter on security theories is pretty hard to put down... and that is some dull stuff, usually). The book includes bolded company names throughout and each of those names is included on the book's Web site as a hyperlink to the company site. This is very useful because you can see the examples that the book mentions come to life (if you can read the book while you're in front of your computer)...

I would recommend this book to any reader that wants to learn more about electronic commerce than you would find in a light overview book. This book gets into details, but in a very readable way.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars On your way to millions.......2007-10-25

I'd like to compliment the authors on this book. I have read it fully and constantly use it a resource. For quite some time, I've been meaning to write a review on it!

Even as a person who makes a successful living selling on the Internet (yes I'm a top power seller and eBay business consultant), I find this book to still be of great importance. That's right, even us top sellers can learn from this book. In some ways, it confirms what I have already been doing. In other ways, it opened my eyes up to new techniques-even some that I quickly recognized my competitors use. I can only imagine what new eBay sellers can do after reading this book! If I had this book years ago, I know I would have saved a ton of time and money.

Reading the post below, I think that the author of the post is the type of person that established he knew more than the book before he read it. He was hoping that the book gave him some magical formula or idea. I have seen over and over again these businesses who are so used to doing business a certain way, that they close themselves out to new methods. Just take a look at the music industry if you want to see this!

An example the post author used was the fact that the book covers only "16 pages discussing shipping." When I consult to eBay business clients, I could probably nail down shipping to a few paragraphs...and one of my businesses is shipping over 500+ items a day! I'd say 16 pages is great...especially for those who require basic understanding and a variety of options. Any more writing than what the authors of this book included would be described to me as "fluff." Effective writing is all about being concise.

Did the post take into account that this book also was written before advancements in this field? I'm pretty sure there is a new book coming out soon and I have a feeling it will touch on a host of new issues and additions to other ones.

When I read a book, I find it extremely successful when I learn even just one new thing. It's rare that I find a book like this and learn a host of new things. I hope that others read this with a highlighter and pencil. Use this as a way to save a ton of money on experimentation. Decide what you want to do with your business and set goals. Research what makes sense to you and is best for your business model. Use this book as a way to jump-start your desire to make more money selling on eBay. I can promise you will learn at least a few things that will make this purchase worth thousands!

2 out of 5 stars Some good advice, some bad..........2007-10-23

There really is no substitute for experience, and even then there are times where experience is worthless if we haven't learned from it. Books about eBay can help to close the gap between new seller and experienced seller, but none are all encompassing. It is my belief that a great ebay seller is one that is well seasoned AND well read. Can this book augment the latter? Hmm...

I do like how the book breaks the mold of cookie cutter eBay books that simply copy and paste information from eBay's own help section. Instead, this work shares a lot of insight that one cannot readily obtain from help pages or online advocate sites. Information on tax ID numbers, third party utilities, and record keeping are not topics common in help pages or even forums, and even then the information obtained by anonymous, random individuals isn't always accurate. I salute the book for filling in the gaps here.

In other areas though, I think that some of the advice is contradictory and even poor. I don't doubt that the information contained here came from real people based on real experiences, but being a powerseller by default does not constitute knowing the best way, or even a good way to do business.

I find it appalling that the 408 page book only spends some 16 pages discussing shipping. The fine art of shipping involves dynamics that make the whole rest of eBay seem simple by comparison. As a matter of fact, the vast majority of poor experiences on eBay are attributed to poor shipping, lack of knowledge when it comes to shipping, or misconceptions about shipping obligations or practices. The book takes one of the most complicated and important facets of eBaying and shoves it into a corner as to minimize focus on the subject. The section on shipping is so small as a matter of fact, that some readers might skip over what little information is here, forced to continue loss through undercharging, refunds, and negative feedback.

International trade is also marginalized down to 2, yes two, pages. There is no possible way that the plethora of knowledge needed to effectively trade internationally can be put to two pages. This serves to provide just enough to get someone in trouble.

The book further contradicts itself by saying that you should not pad your shipping charges, only to charge at cost, but then it advocates hiding the actual charges from your customers. The book also advocates such things as getting a Paypal debit card, which means that your funds are subject to seizure and you will not be collecting a significant amount of return on your investment as you would with say, a normal savings account or a certificate of deposit. Most experienced sellers do not keep a balance in Paypal. Furthermore, the book mentions that Cashier's Checks and Money Orders are risk free. This couldn't be further from the truth. The majority of online fraud is committed with wire transfers, checks, and especially, money orders.

While I think there is plenty of good advice here, the bad advice here should be apparent to anyone that has had their fair share of eBay selling experiences. It is for reasons such as these books, that there is no substitute for experience, and until you've gotten your feet wet, you won't know which parts are right or wrong.

3 out of 5 stars High hopes weren't quite fulfilled.......2007-10-06

I had high hopes for this book. Great title, but it left me feeling a little disappointed. I learnt a few things, but it didn't represent any huge breakthroughs. My favorite part was chapter 4 which reviewed the pros and cons of the various listing tools and software.

5 out of 5 stars Easy and informative.......2007-09-11

If you are interested in becoming a more effective seller and a knowledgeable buyer this is a very informative book. Its simple format lends itself to quick reference or more in-depth discussions, depending on your level of inquiry. I've read a lot of ebay books and this is a great one to purchase! Check out my ebay profile at jjjs04. Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars Great tips of the trade!.......2007-01-18

Way to go!

This book gave me more information that I ever could have needed for starting up an Ebay business and I will continue to use it as a reference and guide for many of the troubling questions that arise in the cyber-business world.

The authors gave you more resources than you can imagine as well as detailing the benefits of becoming an Ebay Power Seller. It's amazing how much information they crammed between the pages and how amazingly detailed and forthcoming they were with the information. I was surprised to see the multiple lists for valuable online resources, and for those of us who learn best by seeing things in action-- they even have screen-shot pictures in the book with the corresponding URLs to the areas that can give you the most information.

As stated before, this book has a permanent place on my shelf as a reference guide to Ebay and beyond. Even if you're a current seller on Ebay, looking to upgrade your status to a Power Seller, give this book a shot. It could give you the extra boost you need for driving your business toward its goals and setting you on the right paths toward them.

Excellent and recommended tool for your Ebay business!

This book is useful when you are just starting an online business. Just make sure you buy the latest version so that some information is not outdated by the time you are ready to set up your online business.

5 out of 5 stars Worth it's weight in gold if you're going online!.......2007-08-18

I just got this book last week and I'm not even done with it and have gotten so many 'nuggets' that it has more than paid for itself already! It's well written, easy to understand, organized extremely well for easy reference and full of helpful resources.

The section on 'Keeping it legal' saved me great error already (I was going to buy a domain name that could've infringed on a copyright) and I have found several free web builders online that are 10x's better than what I had been using. There's so much practical information in this book that I no longer feel guilty for buying it new.

This book is zero fluff, tons of examples and free or very reasonable resources, and lots of food for thought. The table of contents is so detailed that it makes for a quick reference (does anyone read a book like this cover to cover?) Greg Holden's writing style is personable and to the point and very easy to understand.

I truly don't understand all the reviews that say this book is no good, not sure what they have been reading, but I have no less than a dozen books of this nature, and this is one of the few that isn't 75% fluff. I'm somewhat of a website newbie, starting about a year ago trying to do my own website. It's alot harder (for me)than I originally thought and have tried no less than 6 different hosting accounts, 4 different online web builders, and 6 different web editing software trials (Expressions, dreamweaver, publisher, coffee cup, page spinner and frontpage). One of the best discoveries in this book was that Firefox offered a FREE...quality...web editor!

This is the 2007 edition, maybe people were referring to the earlier version of the same title. I have gotten way more out of this book than I thought I would. I guess I must be a true "Dummie". It's definitely worth your time checking it out if you are new to the online business world, you can always resell it on Amazon and recover your moola.

2 out of 5 stars this one really is for dummies.......2007-08-05

One of the worst "For Dummies" books I've ever read. Normally, I'd rate for dummies books a 3 or 4.

3 out of 5 stars Not worth it.......2007-04-19

You could do an online search and find more information than this book gives you. I did not enjoy and I returned it. It is broad and never really gives you step by step instrucions on how the webite actually works and how to create it.

2 out of 5 stars very rudimentary, broad overview.......2007-04-14

People who use the internet regularly will not get much out of this book--it's no joke when it says "for dummies". Greg Holden does give a broad overview of the many aspects to starting an online business but even then the information is outdated and at some points, simply not accurate making you wonder where this guy gets his facts.

In an environment that is not only competitive but also changes rapidly it is important that you are equipped with the most up to date information. This book however, still proclaims AOL king and web sites using tables and frame "advanced". Although the book was published in 2006 (and in its 4th revision), it feels more like it belongs to the 90's.

So even if you are new to the internet and need a place to start I recommend you find yourself a different book.

5 out of 5 stars eBay for Dummies.......2007-09-29

Excellent book and just what I wanted. It arrived quickly and in great condition.

3 out of 5 stars Ok but incomplete.......2007-08-27

I read the Dummys Guide several months ago. Since then I have read a number of other books and watched the Dont Bid On It eBay video. I also read the Simplified Tips for ebay, Schills and Sharks, and several others. After going through everything I am ready to pass along my opinion. I will mainly compare and contrast the Dummys guide with my top choice.

The information in the Dummys Guide was outdated and incomplete. The information was good but there was a lot of important things that were left out. Pages are filled with cute cartoons instead of details ebay users really need. Lots of filler to make the book longer but when compared to newer books, the actual information was thin. It barely comments on snipe bidding but the like Don't Bid On It book(which is also available here at amazon), has a detailed article on snipe bidding plus a chapter on bidding strategies that explains how it works along with other bidding strategies. The Dummys guide only quickly mentions fraudulent sellers and feedback with little explination of how to check it. Dont Bid has an extensive chapter explaining how feedback really works, how to prevent bad buyers from leaving you negative feedback, how to use feedback to spot hijacked or fake accounts, a full chapter on feedback and how it works, it also has a full section on identifying honest buyers and what to do if you do have a problem with a buyer or seller, and much more than I can list here.

Did you know that any seller who says "I am not responsible for loss or damage if you do not buy insurance" is WRONG, they are legally responsible even if the buyer does not pay for insurance.
Did you know that if you select the wrong option when filing a PayPal complaint, your complaint will be automatically rejected and you will not be able to re-file? That is pretty important to know and both of these were in the Dont Bid book but not in Dummys Guide as well as many similar tips.

The Dont Bid book also has a demonstration video. Many of the pages in the Dummys guide were filled with explinations about what webpage to go to and what to do, it was much easier to see it demonstrated in the Dont Bid video than it was to read the step by step in the dummys guide. Some of the Dummy's Guide information was not useful, for example, they explain how to research a bidder by seeing when they return to re-bid every day, but in the Dont Bid book they explain that you should not be bidding against such an inexperienced bidder in the first place because that only runs up the price unnecessarily. By simply waiting until the last minute or using snipe software you can avoid this bidder running up the price. This was not part of the dummys strategy and as far as I can remember, that was the only strategy they had. The Dont Bid book had several bidding and several more buying strategies.

The Dummys Guide gives you enough information to get started on eBay, but not enough to trade safely or enough to buy/sell and obtain the best prices. The Dummys guide is not expensive so give it a read but dont use eBay before you read the Don't Bid On It series, only then will you really know how to use eBay safely and correctly.

5 out of 5 stars Great beginning book.......2007-06-17

I hadn't done much with eBay before, so there was more explained in this book than what I had imagined eBay had. Very informative and easy to read.

A Gotta Have book if you are planning on starting an eBay business in your home. Great reference for the experienced eBayer.

5 out of 5 stars An expert's view on unifying information.......2007-07-26

Actually implementing a content management solution, even for a small company, is a daunting prospect. Not only do you have to consider a myriad of concrete tasks in order to audit, centralize, and reuse your information. You also have to "sell" a major work-style change to numerous players. Even knowing where to start can be overwhelming, and that's where Ann Rockley's book Managing Enterprise Content comes in.

Authoritative and experienced, Rockley acknowledges that enterprise content management is not for everyone (a refreshing change from those pushing cookie-cutter solutions). In cases where content management could solve business problems, Rockley makes her case with calm conviction, breaking the subject down into logical chunks. In particular, her chapters on designing metadata (the "information about information" that is key to effective and scalable content management) and workflow (the designation of who does what, when) are lucid and comprehensive.

Whether your objective is to get a grasp of the subject, sell an implementation to your organization, or just digest what an impending implementation will mean to you, you'll want Rockley's book on your desk.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent starting point for tech writers making the move to single sourcing........2007-05-25

I came to this book from a very different direction than many (all?) of the other reviewers. I'm a technical writer ("content developer") researching methods and tools for single-sourcing technical documentation. For my purposes, this book was an excellent starting point in recognizing and understanding the considerations that must be taken into account when migrating to a single-source solution (i.e., one tool and set of practices for developing documentation to be delivered in multiple media), defining a new set of practices, and evaluating an authoring tool. I recommend this book strongly to any tech writer/manager who needs help understanding the basics of single-sourcing.

4 out of 5 stars Content reuse, not Enterprise Content Management...,.......2006-11-05

This book's title has probably attracted those interested in Enterprise Content Management. ECM has increasingly become a major buzz in business strategy circles as the information age tidal wave spills over into organizations and floods them with content. We're literally drowning. "Managing Enterprise Content" does not discuss ECM in broad terms, such as structured and unstructured content, email, scanned documents, OCR, ICR, etc. Instead, it focuses on content reuse. To take a simple example, a product brochure, a website, and a press release all include descriptions of a product. Why, the book argues, rewrite that description three separate times for each medium? Why not write it just once, store it in a content management system, and then reuse it over and over again? "Content Modularization" or "Content Reuse" probably describe the goals of this book less confusingly than "Managing Enterprise Content." But, in fairness to the authors, the current title isn't inaccurate, it just lends itself easily to misunderstanding. To reiterate: those looking for a course in Enterprise Content Management conforming to the Association for Information and Image Management's (AIIM) guidelines should look elsewhere.

Nonetheless, those looking for a strategy to manage distributable content throughout an organization should take a look at "Managing Enterprise Content." The focus remains on implementing a "unified content strategy," which translates essentially to an efficient reuse of content. Here the word "content" has a specific sense relating to verbiage authored for a specific use. Product descriptions, mission and vision statements, disclaimers, compliance and regulatory announcements, anything widely distributable qualifies. How does one efficiently manage the creation and the evolution of such content across an organization? This obviously implies some form of centralization (although this pregnant term gets strategically avoided for obvious reasons). And this further implies a software system. But prior to purchasing an expensive application, the business must align itself process-wise to enable content reuse. Otherwise the costly program will sit and rot. The first three parts of the book (I - III), comprising its first twelve chapters, discuss these necessary preparations and walk the reader through to implementation. This progression mirrors, for good reasons, the project management and software development life cycle processes. First, determine the concept or the "why?" of the project (Chapters 1 & 2). Then perform cost benefit analysis (Chapter 3 discusses ROI for content reuse), analyze and prioritize the current content infrastructure, the "As-Is" (Chapters 4 through 6), look to the future by modeling and designing the elements of the system the "To-Be" (Chapters 7 through 11), and finally implement the reusable content infrastructure (Chapter 12). Evaluation of software tools and technology should come before implementation, but the book instead covers these topics in Part IV (Chapters 13 to 18). So it's that easy to implement a unified content strategy? Well, no, not really.

Part V, the book's final section, outlines the inevitable issues that face organizational restructuring. Implementation of a unified content strategy will probably necessitate fundamental changes. Roles will get changes, people moved around, departments will get realigned or reorganized. All of this can sap morale or cause anxiety amongst employees. The author is not an authority on such issues, so this section of the book remains somewhat cursory and high-level. Conflict management gets deferred to a website (the book contains an out of date URL, but the book's website[...] has an updated address), and the advice presented here will probably not surprise anyone. Still, managing change remains an important part of any new implementation and this section, though rudimentary, will at least raise awareness.

Lastly, the appendices contain a grab bag of information. Appendix C, on vendors, has probably suffered from age (these days, a lot can happen in three years), but it may provide some good leads. Appendix B, "Writing for Multiple Media," probably could have appeared in the main body of the book; it contains important details not covered elsewhere.

Overall, the book does give a plausible outline for implementing the proposed strategy. Some of the chapters may seem overly simplistic or overlong to those experienced with system implementations or business process management. At the very least, "Managing Enterprise Content" may introduce some readers to the concept of enterprise content reuse. That concept remains a challenging one that will likely mean different things to different organizations. So this book does not provide the final word on the subject, nor does it intend to. An organization can only use this book as a blueprint or a guidepost for implementing its own unified content strategy.

4 out of 5 stars Review of Managing Enterprise Content: A Unified Content Str.......2004-05-21

Are you overwhelmed with the need to create more content, faster, customized for more customers, and for more media than ever before? Do you consider storing documentation on a server as an effective a content management system? Do you want to learn how content management will empower your organization? The answer to these questions and many more is covered in Managing Enterprise Content: A Unified Content Strategy by Ann Rockley with Pamela Kostur and Steve Manning of The Rockley Group. The Rockley Group is one of the leading providers of content management methodologies.

Managing Enterprise Content provides concepts, strategies, guidelines, processes, and technical options that will prepare you to meet the increasing demands of creating, managing, and distributing content. It describes techniques that will help you define your content management requirements, build your vision, design your content architecture, select tools, and overcome obstacles of managing enterprise content. It will help you to visualize the spectrum of enterprise content, the requirements for effectively creating, managing, and delivering content, and the value of developing a content strategy for your organization. That¡¦s a lot of information for one person to understand. That¡¦s why the book is written for three audiences: content managers, information architects, and authors. Managing Enterprise Content follows the same methodical approach that Rockley uses to teach content management in seminars and workshops.

I was expecting the book to jump into the technologies to implement a content management system. But that¡¦s not how Rockley presents content management. She begins with The basis of a unified content strategy and describes how content is created, who creates it, why authors work in isolation, and the consequences of isolation and centralizing content. The solution is to consolidate content in a definitive source, and a process that encourage authors to work collaboratively. The next step is to assess opportunities for content reuse. If you have never heard the term ¡¥reusing content,¡¦ you may know it as single sourcing. You probably already reuse content (i.e. copy and paste), which works well until the information, and everywhere that it appears, must be updated. Content reuse involves using existing content components (e.g. paragraphs, sections, and chapters) to develop new documents. Implementing a unified content strategy is a costly investment: tools, technologies, and training are not cheap. Investment costs are incurred in technology, training and consulting, and lost productivity.

Examples are given to calculate the cost of authoring tools, content management systems, training and consulting¡Xa content management system is not a plug and play, one size fits all solution. The return on investment is achieved by reduced time to market, reduced cost of product content development, improved accuracy and quality of content, and reduced manufacturing defects. The examples are especially helpful because you will need to create a proposal to convince budget holders and management on the return on investment of a content management solution.

Are you ready to buy a content management system? Not yet, read further. ¡§Performing a substantive audit: Determining business requirements¡¨ begins with an introduction on how to determine goals that you want a unified content strategy to solve, for example:
„h Reduce the time to plan, write, review, approve, and publish
„h Create flexible content that is easily reused to create information products for multiple products and multiple media
„h Reduce the cost of translation by reusing existing translations.
„h Make content more accessible; separating content from format makes it possible for content to be displayed automatically in a format appropriate to the disability.
Rockley describes how to identify opportunities where a unified approach of content management (i.e. planning, design, authoring and revision, version control, access control, publication and delivery to its audiences) is beneficial.

You are probably wondering how this all fits together, and Rockley explains how. ¡§Design¡¨ describes information modeling and metadata, how to personalize content, how to design a workflow, and how to implement your design.

An information model is critical for a unified content strategy because it provides a framework for documentation. It's the 80/20 rule: 80% of your effort is planning and analysis, and 20% of your effort is implementing the solution with whatever tools are selected to accomplish the goals the organization has set for itself. The level of detail of your information model depends on the level of reuse you want to achieve.

Many desktop publishing tools can dynamically publish personalized letters and forms by matching elements such as names and address¡Xa content management system can do the same. I was confused why design is given so much attention. Why not conduct the audit, buy the tools, and worry about design later? You can¡¦t. The design of information, reuse models/maps, meta data and workflow are all tool independent tasks. Regardless of the tools selected, you must first analyse and then design a content or information model so that it can be presented to IT staff and software vendors. Doing this in advance makes it possible for you to ask vendors to respond to a request for proposal and document how their tools can help you satisfy your specific challenges. Analysis provides an opportunity to collect metrics. From your information models, you can identify how much of your content could be reusable and where.

Educated on how content is used, where and how, you are better prepared to match the tools and technology to the origination¡¦s goals to deliver a unified content management solution. ¡§Tools and technologies¡¨ offers guidelines for evaluating tools. With so many tools and technologies to choose from, selecting the one that best satisfies your goals and budget is a challenge. Your best advantage is to be an educated consumer before you shop around. Rockley recommends that you identify your needs, and criteria for evaluating product options in terms of usability, training provided, supporting documentation provided, technical support, upgrades and enhancements, implementation time, cost, vendor viability, partnerships the vendor has to provide an expanded solution, and references. Where do you being looking?

Some good sources are conferences where vendors present authoring solutions such as the annual STC conference, electronic mailing lists, technology magazines, Web sites and online discussion boards and newsgroups. A supplement to ¡§Tools and technologies¡¨ is Appendix C, ¡§Vendors,¡¨ which is an overview of products, features and vendors. Appendix D, ¡§Tools Checklist,¡¨ which lists sample questions to ask a vendor. When you have narrowed your list of potential vendors, Rockley suggests that you either contact the vendors and request onsite demonstrations or send vendors an RFP (request for proposal).

¡§Tools and technologies¡¨ covers XML because it provides interoperability between applications. XML is not a set of tags that you apply to documents; it is a specification that sets rules for the creation of tag sets that you apply to documents. For instance, if you selected tools first and then designed your content, you might find that some of the content does not behave the way you expect it to. One solution would be to use XSLT to transform the content and move it around where you want it. While this may be an acceptable solution, it¡¦s not. The conversion costs time, money, and resources. There is no need to convert or transform content if it¡¦s modelled in XML from the start.

Rockley describes strategies for collaborative authoring, how to separate content from format, how to manage change and transition. An example is given to illustrate how the same product description is reused effectively to create a show catalog, brochure, press release and Web site. It¡¦s easy to understand that people find it hard to believe that content somebody else created could possibly meet their needs. After all, Rockley notes, it was written for a different purpose and media, and the author could not have known their customers/audience/requirements. However, if content is written for a different purpose, audience, or media without considering how the content can be reused, it¡¦ won¡¦t work.

Don¡¦t be optimistic that everybody will be willing to convert to a better way of authoring and managing content. Rockley presents issues to consider when planning your change management strategy such as overcoming resistance from opponents and descriptions of new and modified roles. She recommends creating a role for an enterprise project coordinator and information technologist; a change to existing roles business owners or analysts and information architects; and new skill sets (p. 413-415). Unintentionally overlooked are system administrators to maintain the content management system and to ensure that users adhere to standards.

Don¡¦t be overly optimistic that everybody will want morph into new roles and change their authoring habits. An XML system is best suited and ideal for a large documentation department for all content authoring or an organization where every author uses the XML authoring tool. A team of ten or fewer will be constrained to balance XML implementation and documentation project duties, and learn how to use the (new) content management system. Even if you assign the complex task of XML implementation and creation of information models, workflows and DTDs to a consultant, the consultant will require guidance from the team. These are only a few of the constraints to overcome to assure a successful unified content strategy that Rockley expertly describes how to overcome.

Managing Enterprise Content concludes with a checklist for implementing a unified content strategy, suggestions for writing for multiple media, sample questions to ask vendors, a checklist for the tools required to implement a unified content strategy, and the importance of content relationships in version control. Pay close attention to usability. The rollout of a content management system, authoring tools, and authoring standards affects every member of the organization. If it¡¦s not easy to learn, easy to use, easy to support, and easy to maintain, authors will revert to the traditional way of writing and managing content.

Read Managing Enterprise Content before you invest in a content management system and consulting fees. You will be an educated and informed customer and user when you begin shopping for a content management solution of your own.

5 out of 5 stars A must for Content Management projects.......2004-02-02

This book is an absolute must for Content Management projects. It touches all of the important aspects: Technical, functional and process. There is something for all stakeholders in a EMS/CMS project.

Especially good about this book is that the parts that are not your direct job are still very readable, understandable and interesting. It provides valuable insights in other peoples jobs and reasoning.

Coming from the technical side and with a lot of experience in setting up systems and also information architecture and DTD design, for me this book contained several new insights and some very helpfull checklists.

I am in the middel of a CMS project now, but I wish I had read it sooner.

2 out of 5 stars no math.......2007-05-25

Overall this book was OK. It presented the key information in money and banking and the authors often made it entertaining to read. However the one major flaw with the book is the lack of ANY math. I know that some books are marketed for a more mathematical approach and thus contain more advanced mathematics accordingly. However this book had so little math it was laughable. I recall one section where the authors said "this can be proven mathematically, but for now just take our word for it..."
NO, I won't take your word for it, because knowing the underlying principals is to truly understanding anything.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly written.......2006-03-22

Principles of Money, Banking, and Financial Markets contains a great deal of information regarding economics in the United States. As a student, I find it to be poorly written. The authors/editors make constant reference throughout the text to other sections of the text. For example, we will discuss this in depth in chapter seven, but for now, lets reflect our continued study from chapter two and three. By doing so, we will be better prepared to read chapter eleven when we get to it. If the authors / editors left out the references and just left the actual information needed to learn the material, the student would be able to follow the material and perhaps understand the topic better. I am strongly encouraging our economics department to seek another text for future semesters.
