Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Overview.......2007-04-25

An invaluable primer on casino management. This book should be on the shelf of every executive in the gaming industry.

4 out of 5 stars The Best of Its Genre.......2007-02-03

"Casino Operations Management" is the best book on the market now focusing on operational issues that confront casino managers. It is arguably "too much" for an undergraduate course, but the book is highly recommended for casino managers who want to strengthen their understanding of what makes a casino really tick. Those simply interested in in-depth knowledge of the industry's operational issues will also find the book helpful.

4 out of 5 stars casino operations.......2006-06-30

Good overview of casino operations. It covers Indian gaming as well as Nevada and mentions where there are difference. I am the controller and I wish it had more accounting /finance.

5 out of 5 stars Excelent operations overview.......2005-10-29

This book is a must read for everyone entering the casino business. It's a clear reference, and it shows derails some myths about gaming operations.

5 out of 5 stars Great read.......2005-06-14

This books assumes you know nothing about Gaming Operations and goes from there, taking you on an in-depth exploration of the gaming industry, from it's beginnings through modern-day operations. This book was highly beneficial. I also read "The Gaming Industry: Introduction and Perspectives" from the UNLV International Gaming Institute, both of which I would strongly recommend. Well written and dives to the appropriate level of detail.

Jeffrey, who has traveled with twin boys and a baby, covers every possible aspect of adventure travel: hiking, biking, sailing, canoeing, and basic world roaming. You'll get down-and-dirty tips (ways to calculate how many diapers to take to a tropical island--and how to wash them), good preparation advice (learn to live in small places, study another language, take practice hikes, turn off the television), and suggestions for great family destinations. No, Jeffrey doesn't mean Club Med or Disneyland--she suggests instead Nepal, the Alps, Alaska, Guatemala, or Turkey. Adventuring with Children is not only fascinating and informative, as its subtitle promises, it's inspirational as well. Customer Reviews:

    1 out of 5 stars Not what I needed.......2007-07-26

Based on the reviews of this book, I was excited to check it out in preparation for our European and Tunisian adventure this fall. I was sadly disappointed when it arrived and I flipped through and read parts of it - granted not all, but I was not sufficiently "inspired" to read more. For one, and its a big one, this book is OLD. I thought a third edition would mean updated, and I neglected to look at the publishing date. My fault. It is pre 9-11, and I bet a lot of things have changed out there that this book does not address in re air travel and border crossings.

There was a lot of the book dedicated to camping, which if that is what you are doing, definately get it. It addresses very extended vacations, and I personally don't know a single sole who goes on a 6 month camping/biking trip to a distant locale. I read through the education part, since I want our trip to be educational for my preschooler, but was disappointed by that as well, as there was not much of use to me there.

The only things that I saw as useful were pretty common knowledge if you have traveled before. I am glad for others to have been inspired by this book, but personally, it does not help me one bit.

So, please enjoy if it sounds right for you, but as for me, I will be sending it back. Maybe you'll get my copy.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational and also very practical.......2004-03-06

I still haven't had a chance to use the tips from this book, since our trip to Greece with our one-year-old is planned for a few months from now. I can say that reading so many real-life, much more complicated examples of Ms. Jeffrey's family's own travels have made planning a few weeks in Greece seem like no big deal, though.

I was also pleasantly surprised to read so much about the things her children learned through travel at different ages, as well as through the homeschooling done on the road. (Ms. Jeffries also provides very useful homeschooling references.) Our daughter is much too young for a lot of this, but I found it all inspirational. It's amazing how much more children can learn from travel, plus reading, rather than from reading alone.

I started reading just to find the basics of how to travel with a child (what to take, how to keep entertained, etc.), but ended knowing so much about how traveling with a child will actually be more beneficial to the whole family than I ever imagined.

5 out of 5 stars World class book for world class adventures...with children.......2000-06-24

There are many travel books on the market, and there are many travel books for those who have children. This books stands out because the author actually took her kids on wonderful, real "adventures," not just tame camping trips in the U.S. She and her husband traveled to remote places (Morocco, Spain, Bali, Nepal, New Zealand...), kids in tow, and share the experience with us through text and photos. They sailed, biked, hiked, and drove about, and lived for several weeks in different countries.

While most books of this sort will list things to bring along, the author gives us real explanations for each of the things she brings--and she doesn't bring much--and tells us how to make do with less. Invaluable are her personal stories of medical needs, literary needs (her boys brought a few books and exchanged books with other travelers), laundry and social needs. There is even a terrific discussion of diapering while traveling!

Perhaps my favorite section, as a homeschooling mom, is her chapter on education while on the road. The author truly sees the educational value of travel. No doubt her boys were very well educated by their many adventures. They learned foreign languages and the differences between many cultures. Thinking of adventuring?Buy it, and you'll want to try it!

and have even given it to a fellow aviator as well. It's great for weekend trips, although I'd still recommend asking around the FBO where you fuel or tie down. Some info was out of date, but overall it's a fun book to use!

4 out of 5 stars Not quite up to date .......2005-08-03

This book is fun to read. Not sure that all the information is up to date. Think I would cross check the restaurants with Google's new global search engine before I left the ground just to be sure they still exist.

5 out of 5 stars My flight planning and travel Bible.......2005-04-14

The $100 Hamburger has been a primary resource for my flight planning. I use this book in conjunction with John's web site to plan my flights. The book has saved me hundreds of dollars in car rentals. It has protected my stomach from indigestion that comes from vending machine food. Every pilot needs to know which airports have easy access to good food. I don't leave the ground without it!

12/21/05 Clearly things change. Books can't stay up to date every day. I stand by John's book. If you have currency issues, then visit the supporting web site. He keeps a very up to date webpage that fulfills the upto date wishes. You should check it out. You should provide these inputs to the web page.

4 out of 5 stars Good book but needs better time-lines.......2003-08-05

The reviews are ok, but they ALL need dates since you have NO idea when any of the comments were made or if they are in any kind of order. There are comments that say a particular place is open, closed, under new management, shut down for the season all for the same place and without any dates. You have NO idea what is going on. or if the comment is from 1996.

            5 out of 5 stars Correction.......2003-04-18

Please notice that the other reviews mentioned refer to The first edition. This is the second edition and it is totally up to date. It corrects the problems mentioned about the 1st Edition. Those reveiws are valid for the 1st Edition but not the 2nd. Any review dated before the publication date, November, 2003 of the 2nd Edition refers to the 1st Edition.

Thnaks for taking the time to place the proper reviews with the proper book.

After getting Controller and CFO's Guide to Accounts Payable, I picked up Travel and Entertainment Best Practices. Again I have gotten what I needed. Using this book as an outline I can safely give sound advise on what and how to handle T&E. My situation is awkward as I have to fill the shoes of a much senior previous employee, I cant tell you valuable it is to have the wisdom of Mary imparted to me.

5 out of 5 stars More best practices from Schaeffer.......2007-02-19

I'm a financial professional from NY. I find that doing the paperwork after a business trip can sometimes be more trouble for me and and the Payable Department than the trip was worth.
Schaeffer's book will help you streamline the T&E process and provide you the information you need to put effective policies and procedures in place.
The information we used from this book helps our company save money on every trip our associates take.
