A Beloved Classis Now Available In Hard Book Edition For The Youngest Child.

Amazon.com

The gentle rhyming and gorgeous, tissue-paper collage illustrations in this classic picture book make it a dog-eared favorite on many children's bookshelves. On each page, we meet a new animal who nudges us onward to discover which creature will show up next: "Blue Horse, Blue Horse, What do you see? I see a green frog looking at me." This pattern is repeated over and over, until the pre-reader can chime in with the reader, easily predicting the next rhyme. One thing readers might not predict, however, is just what kinds of funny characters will make an appearance at the denouement! Children on the verge of reading learn best with plenty of identifiable images and rhythmic repetition. Eric Carle's good-humored style and colorful, bold illustrations (like those in The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Grouchy Ladybug, and Have You Seen My Cat?) have earned him a prominent place in the children's book hall of fame. You can never go wrong with the classics. I read this book to my children and this copy is for my grandchildren!!

5 out of 5 stars A+.......2007-09-30

I've used this book (the hard cover version) to teach English to my Kindergarten English Language Learners. They like it! I also give this as a gift to my friends' pre-schoolers. It's a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars Addicting!.......2007-09-27

From the day we purchased this book, my daughter asks for it EVERYTIME she lies down for a nap or bedtime. I quickly learned it by heart so I could tell her the story in the dark (many times she will fall asleep before I finish). My husband however just changes the story a little bit. My daughter can now read it to us (only 21 months old) and does so often. This book has really helped her learn her animals and colors. I will be giving this book for a shower gift from now on.

Anything by Eric Carle is excellent. This is my son's favorite book. He's 3 and know every animal before we get to the page.

We bought this for our daughter for her first birthday. The text is simple, teaching colors and animals. The illustrations are, of course, beautiful. She loves this book!

5 out of 5 stars It's time for a paradigm shift in healthcare.......2007-06-02

I attended a lecture by Fred Lee, where he discussed some of the points brought up in his 9 1/2 Things book, and I was very impressed. First of all, I am a huge Disney fan, and I know that the Disney method transcends the typical service model, and focuses on the entire process as an "experience".

Mr. Lee, in this very insightful book, delves into how this can be applied to healthcare. And why should it not be applied to healthcare? In healthcare, there is a tremendous opportunity for caring and competent people to turn a frightening and intrusive process into an experience.

Sure, going to the hospital will never be a fun trip like a trip to Disney would be, but it can be one that is memorable for the RIGHT reasons rather than memorable for the WRONG reasons.

There are so many pieces of valuable information in this book that you'll need to keep it readily available as a reference tool.

5 out of 5 stars Book has wider appeal than health care.......2007-05-25

This book is specifically targeted towards customer service in hospital settings, but it is very easy to apply the ideas to other situations. There are also discussions of units with only internal customers, and these sections are broadly applicable to government, business and non-profit organizations.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book on the Disney Approach...Period.......2007-02-15

"But I'm not in the hospital business." Neither am I. But I am a Disney Institute alumnus and an avid practitioner of the Disney Approach to People Management, Quality Service, and Loyalty; and I've found "If Disney Ran Your Hospital" more helpful than anything else in print. I think you will, too. Here's why. A number of books explain the principles and practices that drive Disney. Most are helpful, and one, "Be Our Guest" by the Disney Institute, is indispensable. But Fred Lee does one thing better than anyone else: he models how to transfer those principles to another industry. That's what he did at the Disney Institute and that's what he will help you do in your business. Granted, his applications come from healthcare. But along the way Fred Lee demonstrates how to translate and apply the Disney Approach outside of the Disney setting, and that's what's so helpful--he provides an example that the rest of us can follow. If you're interested in benchmarking the Disney Approach, you need this book. One more thing: Fred Lee can write. "If Disney Ran Your Hospital" is the best book on the Disney Approach...period.

1 out of 5 stars If Disney Ran Your Hospital - Save your money.......2007-02-07

This book was a complete waste of time and money. I would give it zero stars if I could.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for hospital leaders.......2007-01-18

This is a different book that brings a whole new perspective of how to threat professionals that care for people and how to improve your corporate culture resulting in extraordinary results to patients.

4 out of 5 stars Good Technique Book.......2007-10-21

This book explained everything very well and did not sugar coat or beat around the bush. It was friendly and totally supported the idea of giving and recieving oral sex. The techniques presented in this book were well explained and very helpful. The pictures served their purpose in facilitating the explanation of certain body parts. Overall, i enjoyed this book.

This book is, in a word, ABSOLUTELY GREAT!!! SO BUY IT NOW!! It's written by a woman who obviously loves fellatio to the bottom of her soul, and who has developed superlative and awesome technique -- making her a true Grand Master of Fellatio!! Truly mind blowing techniques to add to your oral repretoire! In terms of substantive tips, it beats other books on this subject hands down. It is shorn of nonessential details and distills to essence the art of great fellatio -- and thus gets straight to the point. It makes us want to write a similar book on mind blowing cunnilingus -- so let's find a publisher.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the Time.......2006-06-06

I found this read to be somewhat informative prose wise, entertaining & very informative visually. Ms Taylor does a great job of relaxing the reader, let's face it, many women find giving oral sex repulsive. I know because I do sexual counseling. Having said that, I found a lot of her info a tad boring or repetitive, probably because I have read "Blowing Him Away", "Going Down","The Ultimate Guide To Fellatio" etc. etc.
The fun title definitely caught my eye, & if you are a novice, married 20 years or just plain curious, this is a MUST read! Every woman having sex with a man should know this info & be comfortable performing fellatio, which can be VERY sexually exciting for women!
Yes ladies, you can get extremely aroused with the right mindset & knowledge. This is where I think Ms. Taylor's book has the most importance. She delves into:
1)mental preparation
2)making it fun ie; poprocks
3)giving some tasteful (no pun intended) photos on how to achieve it all, mentally & physically.
Women are, for the most part, taught, "only bad girls do that" or they hear how awful it is from their peers or sisters. We are given thousands of subliminal messages that sex is
a) dirty, especially penises (how many penises do you see in R rated movies?)
b) messy,
c) inconvenient, but most of all....
d) a natural thing. Therefore we don't feel it necessary to read a book on sex, I mean, It's "natural" right? GO READ THIS BOOK & learn about good sex. Let me end by adding, one of the later photos shows the woman lying down, head back & the penis entering from above (deep throating). This excellent technique originated from Linda Lovelace & no,not all women who go down, deep throat, you do what is comfortable but don't limit yourself either. Regarding swallowing...99% of the time he won't even know whether you did or didn't, he is too absorbed into the wonderful orgasm you have given him (keep a towel handy). MY fun tip of the day, (I can't recall if this was in the book) get a hot cup of tea or coffee, swish it in your mouth a few seconds & drive him crazy, several times. Have fun ladies, I mean that....& you will after reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars Sure, it's giving! But equality comes elsewhere!.......2005-11-16

I had already reviewed a few books on fellatio - but the cute title of this text really caught my eye. "You Want Me To Do What?" It's not how I feel. But in these "I'll-do-you-if-you-do-me" times, the idea of giving oral sex might seem to be a little one-sided. However, when one really gets deeper into it (or takes it a little deeper), one soon discovers that there are a lot of other satisfactions to be had from performing this most loving of acts, (mainly emotional).

The book follows a very logical progression, starting off first with mental preparation ("Why do this?"), some definitions (like the "gag reflex"), and a recap of male anatomy (the most useful landmark being what the author calls the "Taylor Spot," after herself, which is the area on the underside of his organ, just below the head, which is where a man is most sensitive).

[...] On that score, the large page size and simple layout does give it some resemblance to a bound college thesis. This just means, unfortunately, that the text is too large to carry around in your purse - in case you forget what you're supposed to do. But there's another reason you might not want to read this book out in public - and that's because of the pictures.

Compared to the other works I've read, the most refreshing - and titillating -- aspect of this book is the fact that it is replete with PHOTOS! The images are strictly black & white and almost clinical in their matter-of-fact presentation. But they are certainly much more effective in communicating exactly what it is one is supposed to do. There's an erect phallus in about 90% of the photos (or a dildo that looks just like one) that is either being licked, kissed, and sucked, and then massaged by hands and between breasts! There's never more than at most an inch of penetration, so the photos are just a tease. But for those of you more apprehensive, seeing another woman's lips lovingly caressing and encircling the tip of a man's tool can certainly be very reassuring.

The author spends a fair amount of time sharing some external techniques, which she likes to give cute names. "Grooving," "The No Handed Catch," "Teasing the Taylor Spot," "Peek-a-Boo," and "Rippling," to name just the biggies.

As a hint for greater penetration, the author suggests letting him slide along the roof of your mouth as he goes deeper which will help to avoid the gag reflex. For fun, there's a humorous photo where the head - and the tongue beneath it - are both completely covered with Pop Rocks (carbonated candy) which is the author's favorite treat. There's even an illustrated section on how to use your mouth - to fit him with a condom (which is probably a good skill to know if I should ever decide to become a prostitute!).

In most of the photos, the woman's face is either upright (taking it from the front), or horizontal (coming down at it from above). The most daring view comes towards the book's end - when her face is leaning back - and her subject is approaching from above and behind her. This posture positions her mouth and throat more in a line, and the technique she's demonstrating, of course - is deep throating!

There are other postures in which to do this, but this is the only one featured in this book. Even so, I think many women might still find this dramatization to be very helpful. What's important here to understand is that the mouth and throat are normally at right angles to each other. In this position, the appendage can't go any further than the back of the mouth. Ladies, if you don't lay your head back - trying to take him any deeper will only make you choke! Trust me!

The section on swallowing is woefully brief. Taylor basically leaves it up to each woman to decide for herself what to do! As an alternative, she suggests having him finish across your face (which is shown in an accompanying photo). I personally found the thought of this to be hugely degrading. It's also missing out on a great emotional opportunity. Ask any man and he'll tell you that nothing says "I love you" more than swallowing - while not doing so, unfortunately, probably says just the opposite!

One of the biggest advantages of oral sex, which the author just touches upon, is its convenience. When women always insist upon having an orgasm every time he does (as female equality has told us we should), then sex, unfortunately, can sometimes loose its spontaneity. For me, a better type of equality for women (than tit-for-tat orgasms) would be to allow ourselves to be a little bisexual instead! Speaking from experience, nothing is more emotionally and physically enthralling - than to spend some time with another woman! It is, of course - why men love us so much!

To conclude, if you're looking for a light-hearted and informative guide to performing oral sex on your man, Taylor's "You Want Me To Do What?" might really hit the spot - without getting you all choked up! I highly recommend it!

3 out of 5 stars Great Information, Poor Presentation........2005-06-30

This book was written and published by Taylor. Mind you the woman knows a great deal about fellatio and the book is highly informative if you can get past the fact that this book lacks a certain amount of eye candy I've become accustomed to. How do I begin: the cover, the numerous photos that are far from publishing quality, the layout of the book, and then there is the writing. All of which is distracting to a very informative book on one of my favorite acts.

Taylor covers several wonderful things in this book but I was distracted by the delivery. Are looks important? When it comes to a book, it is to me. The message is good but if I can't concentrate due to the poor quality of the book what's the point? I just think this book had so much potential.

All that said, there is great stuff in this book that is good. My favorite is putting a condom on with just my mouth. Taylor pretty much covers everything from deep throating to popping candy all with her own brand of wit and slang. It's a great education but the delivery could use some work.

I gave this book three stars for the information it contains but couldn't give it any more.

What do the Honda Supercub, Intel's 8088 processor, and hydraulic excavators have in common? They are all examples of disruptive technologies that helped to redefine the competitive landscape of their respective markets. These products did not come about as the result of successful companies carrying out sound business practices in established markets. In The Innovator's Dilemma, author Clayton M. Christensen shows how these and other products cut into the low end of the marketplace and eventually evolved to displace high-end competitors and their reigning technologies.

At the heart of The Innovator's Dilemma is how a successful company with established products keeps from being pushed aside by newer, cheaper products that will, over time, get better and become a serious threat. Christensen writes that even the best-managed companies, in spite of their attention to customers and continual investment in new technology, are susceptible to failure no matter what the industry, be it hard drives or consumer retailing. Succinct and clearly written, The Innovator's Dilemma is an important book that belongs on every manager's bookshelf. Highly recommended. --Harry C. Edwards

Book Description

In this revolutionary bestseller, Harvard professor Clayton M. Christensen says outstanding companies can do everything right and still lose their market leadership -- or worse, disappear completely. And he not only proves what he says, he tells others how to avoid a similar fate.

Focusing on "disruptive technology" -- the Honda Super Cub, Intel's 8088 processor, or the hydraulic excavator, for example -- Christensen shows why most companies miss "the next great wave." Whether in electronics or retailing, a successful company with established products will get pushed aside unless managers know when to abandon traditional business practices. Using the lessons of successes and failures from leading companies, The Innovator's Dilemma presents a set of rules for capitalizing on the phenomenon of disruptive innovation.

Find out:

Sharp, cogent, and provocative, The Innovator's Dilemma is one of the most talked-about books of our time -- and one no savvy manager or entrepreneur should be without.

Download Description

Revised, updated, and with a new chapter, this book continues to take the radical position that great companies can fail precisely because they do everything right. It demonstrates why outstanding companies lose their market leadership when confronted with disruptive technology--and it explains how to avoid a similar fate. Drawing on insights from a number of industries--such as the computer and disk drive industries, discount retailing, minimills, pharmaceuticals, and the automobile industry--Christensen shows why good management often turns out to be all wrong--and what to do about it.

5 out of 5 stars No Dilemma Here.......2007-08-18

It is the typical manager's nightmare. A startup with a powerful idea wipes out all the dominance your large ogranisation had. It can happen overnite and without warning.

How do you stop this nightmare from happening? Well, the answer could lie in The Innovator's Dilemma.

Kishore Dharmarajan
Author of Eightstorm: 8-Step Brainstorming for Innovative Managers

5 out of 5 stars A disruptive view on innovation.......2007-08-09

Professor Clayton Christensen introduced the term "disruptive innovation" as a management buzzword, the whole book spins around this concept and offers very perturbing views on why being a star performer is a major threat to pass the next opportunity.

First, a definition: disruptive innovations are those that offer "less" in the critical performance parameters of current customers. As a consequence disruptive innovators have to look for different customers than the ones that established companies already have.

To make the point a deep analysis of the hard disk drive industry is made. More than 100 innovations are analysed and only 5 are claimed as being disruptive: the progressive reduction of size from 14", to 8", to 5 1/4", etc. All follow the same pattern: the innovation had lower performance on capacity which was the critical parameter for existing customers and innovators had to find new customers, eg for the 8" drive the mini-computer manufacturers instead of mainframe manufacturers. In fact innovations were so disruptive that almost none of the established companies was able to be successful in the new market. Although current players where by and large able to bring forward the other 100 sustaining inovations without major troubles.

The second part of the book recommends how to make disruptive innovations work, with supporting evidence from examples. This are:
-Create a new organization to deal with the innovation
-Match organization and opportunity size
-Allow the organization to fail rapidly and inexpensively and move on
-Leverage some of the existing resources but not the values and processes of the main organization
-Spend time looking for the right customers rather than the right technology.

The surprising learning is that what impedes that good companies cannot profit from disruptive innovations are that they are good at what they do in their main business not that htey are bad. The hot topic is still when a disruptive innovation is comming how can we spot and capitalise on it, and put ourselves in the dilemma of chosing the best option.

A well laid out, thought provoking and seminal work on innovation.

4 out of 5 stars Repetitive.......2007-06-23

It was a hassle getting through this book, but overall it was worth it. A lot of good lessons learned, but he says the same things over and over again. Read the first and last chapters and you'll be fine.

5 out of 5 stars Business calssic.......2007-06-17

The Innovator's Dilemma by Clayton M. Christensen is a must read book for any person interested in keeping their business moving forward or for any person starting a business. Christensen clearly exposes the traps that cause successful companies to stop innovating and succumb to innovative new firms. The material is presented as a series of fascinating case studies with commentary.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful tool for ages 5 and up!.......2007-09-19

I have to say that all 3 of my children have been helped by us navigating this book together. I homeschool them and each has had 'worries' about one thing or another that they have been ruminating over. We just started a garden this year (growing tomatoes) so this book was PERFECT for us because the author uses the analogy of a tomato plant that you water and care for every day producing a HUGE bumper crop of tomatoes.. and the worries that you give much time and thought to every day 'taking over' your time and thoughts. It was especially helpful when we got to the chapter about setting aside 'worry time' for each child each day and working through their worries using logic. All 3 of my children (ages 5, 8 1/2 and 10) have reduced their worry time / anxiety since we began our 'group study' of this book. We are still working through it.. and it is GREAT!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Resource.......2007-09-08

As a therapist I am always looking for new resources. This is one of the best for treating anxiety. I had one child this week say "did you type this just for me?" because it resonated so well.

I highly recommend this book for social workers/therapists and other professionals who work with children. It is definitely kid-friendly; my clients have been open to using this book because it feels more like a fun activity rather than "therapy".

5 out of 5 stars very helpful book.......2007-07-14

This book is an excellent resource for the professional or parent of a child with anxiety difficulties. It explains the various ways that a child can less the effects of anxiety in child appropriate language with places for the child to customize his or her feelings and thoughts. Very well done.

5 out of 5 stars Kids can relate to the ideas in the book........2007-07-10

When your child's anxiety overtakes and consumes their joy, you'd buy 200 books if they'd help your child to feel better. Don't buy 200 books... BUY THIS ONE for your child.

My daughter is 9, but reads at 8th grade level, so I was a bit apprehensive about getting this book for her; fearing she'd think it was too baby-ish. Much to my surprise and delight, she loves the book! She says "I love the pictures. It's kind of funny and I like that it has activities to do. The book has good ideas about how to fix my worries."

The book does have great kid-friendly concepts like: Worry Time and Worry Bully, with places to draw and write down thoughts. It not only addresses how worries can take over, but empowers kids to fight back and reassures them that when they do, the worries will get smaller and smaller, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY...LOSE THEIR POWER OVER YOUR CHILD.

The book talks about the positives of getting rid of worries, like giving kids more time to play with their friends instead of worrying. Simple concepts perhaps, but written in a way that kids relate. The concepts are ones that both kids and parents can easily remember and refer to, which also helps when the Worry Bully shows up unexpectedly.

Other books that have helped my daughter:
Worried No More Worried No More - Second Edition: Help and Hope for Anxious Children by Aureen Wagner, PHD (this is an excellent resource for Cognitive-Behavioral therapy support; workbook pages in the back...) and the meditations books for children by Maureen Garth: StarbrightStarbright--Meditations for Children, Moonbeam Moonbeam: A Book of Meditations for Children, and Earthlight Earthlight (read together before bedtime to help your child visualize a safe, quiet place before they fall asleep...).

4 out of 5 stars A Tool with Comprehensive Info in Form of Briefs.......2007-09-14

'Be Who You Are' provides an detailed look at the 16 Myers Briggs types. It is a highly useful tool for anyone who wants words to describe who he/she is. It promotes self-understanding through the opportunity to contrast and compare one's type with descriptions of other types.

On top of that, they add a description of how each Myers Briggs type develops over a life time... There is a pattern! This "life phase" section helps you understand your associate or friend. When you know his/her type and what life phase he/she is in, it really helps!

'Be Who You Are' is not a book for general readership, but is a gem for people setting a foundation for their careers and lives. As a tool, it needs to be studied, researched, and worked with, not just skimmed through. Not for shallow people seeking popular entertainment or a Glamor magazine questionnaire, although it reads easily and is fun to learn.

Myers Briggs is one tool of several that are needed to really understand yourself, your job, your career path, and your life. The Myers Briggs type is a great tool, and 'Be Who You Are' is an outstanding guide for that purpose. Highly recommended for people in transitions, confusion, or motivated to advance.

Career + self help + self awareness
1-test to know your type
2- more info about deeper type functions and type developments with examples.
3-detailed and long case studies about each type
4-also ways for people who are in doubt to verify their type.
although the book seems big but you can go through it fast if you are reading about one type or two.
an important point here is that the book WILL NOT TELL you to be an architect for example... -although it may suggest so- simply because a site architect is totally different from a conceptualizer architect or a detailer...

1 out of 5 stars Yet Another Briggs-Meyers Book (YABMB).......2007-08-14

I wish all Briggs-Meyers books used "Briggs-Meyers" in their titles so they could be distinguished from others. The abstract should come out and say that's what the book means by "Personality Type..." If it did, I must have missed it.

I was hoping for something deeper than a rehash of Briggs-Meyers.

5 out of 5 stars Initially daunting.......2007-07-17

When first I saw this book, I thought, "I will never be able to read this whole thing!" I was wrong. The writing flows easily and the book is well organized and easily understood. It has been most helpful in my journey of self-discovery.

4 out of 5 stars Helped my choose my major........2007-07-13

This book was really helpful. What made it different from other personality type books is the real world example. I could read one and say, "that's just like me!" or "that's not me at all". After I finished it, which didn't take very long, I knew what my strengths and weaknesses were. It even gave me a list of good jobs for people like me. For a college student who's trying to decide what they want to do career wise, this book helped seal the deal and choose a major. I highly suggest it to anyone who is unsure who they are or what they want to do.

5 out of 5 stars A fun read.......2007-09-21

My girls and I so enjoy reading the other book in the series, "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see?". My twin girls are 2 and they would actually sit with the other book and read it to out loud to each other, so it was a great find to have another book in the series for us to read, the illustrations are colorful and a great book to learn new vocabulary words.

4 out of 5 stars Reading to your kids.......2007-09-08

This book is a great one to read to your kids.

I like this one more than his Panda Bear and Brown Bear because I can get the kids more excited about sounds. I've read it to groups of young kids and encourage them to make the sounds with me. I'll "roar" like a lion and "snort" like a hippo and the kids will parrot me. They have a lot of fun with this and you get them to start talking about sounds other animals make. They will remember the sounds after just the first reading and get excited any time they see me pick up the book.

It's really cute to watch one kid "read" this to another after we've read it in groups a few times. The kids will remember the animals and will sometimes ask "what do you hear?" and make the sounds for each animal as they go through. It's a wonderful feeling seeing them learn and remember.

5 out of 5 stars Must-have book for kids!.......2007-08-26

My kids love this book and "Brown Bear Brown Bear." The illustrations are wonderful, and they love the animals!

2 out of 5 stars Terrible.......2007-08-08

As any reader of the Brown Bear knows, these books are really meant to be read out loud. But who the heck knows how a peacock sounds (can YOU yelp?)? Or several of the other animals here. I just tossed it away in frustration.

4 out of 5 stars Fun Book.......2007-07-02

My 18 month old daughter enjoys this book. We have fun looking at all the different zoo animals. The one thing that I don't like is the last page. I wish that it had pictures of the animals instead of children dressed up as animals. When my daughter is older she will like that.

Book Description

In this national bestseller, acclaimed, award-winning psychologist Dr. David Walsh explains exactly what happens to the human brain on the path from childhood into adolescence and adulthood. Revealing the latest scientific findings in easy-to-understand terms, Dr. Walsh shows why moodiness, quickness to anger and to take risks, miscommunication, fatigue, territoriality, and other familiar teenage behavior problems are so common -- all are linked to physical changes and growth in the adolescent brain.

Why Do They Act That Way? is the first book to explain the changes in teens' brains and show parents how to use this information to understand, communicate with, and stay connected to their kids. Through real-life stories, Dr. Walsh makes sense of teenagers' many mystifying, annoying, and even outright dangerous behavioral difficulties and provides realistic solutions for dealing with everyday as well as severe challenges. Dr. Walsh's techniques include, among others: sample dialogues that help teens and parents talk civilly and constructively with each other, behavioral contracts, and Parental Survival Kits that provide practical advice for dealing with issues like curfews, disrespectful language and actions, and bullying. With this arsenal of strategies, parents can help their kids learn to control impulses, manage erratic behavior, cope with their changing bodies, and, in effect, develop a second brain.

5 out of 5 stars Why Do They Act That Way?: A Survival Guide to the Adolescent Brain for You and Your Teen.......2007-01-18

We have found this book to be extremely helpful. Raising a teenager is an amazing experience and it helps to have some expert, non partial advice that is backed by research. We especially appreciated the fact that the author does not offer excuses, but helps everyone remain responsible for their behavior, including parents. It was so helpful for us that we bought it as a gift for two different families that are raising teenagers. It was passed on to us by another family that is raising teenagers. Parents are looking for sound instruction. This book provides great insight to what is really going on inside those mysterious heads.

5 out of 5 stars Why do They Act This Way? A Survival Guide to the Adolescent Brain and Your Teen.......2006-10-29

David Walsh is very readable, has a strong sense of humor necessary to deal with the teen psyche, and speaks well to frustrated parents about why their kids do what they do, and how to look at from their perspective and then deal with it more effectively. It's a fun read.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent ---A Must Have for ALL parents.......2005-11-04

Dr. Walsh must have known my son. I felt like he wrote this book for my family. His explanations were easily understood and very insightful, but, not an excuse for the teen's behavior. It was hard at times to put the book down. I really wish my parents had read this book.
Thank YOU, Dr. Walsh. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

5 out of 5 stars A must for an parent of an adolescent.......2005-07-19

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I read it in two sittings. There were so many good and funny examples of real life situations that as a parent of a teenager, one can relate to all too well.

The author is well informed and the information about the human brain development is critical to understanding how to connect and deal with you teenager.

Highly recommend to all.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, enlightening, and useful.......2005-07-17

I was a hard sell when given this book. I was concerned that it was going to offer One Big Excuse for sorry teen-age behavior. I was already seeing the headlines: Teen Not Guilty; It wasn't his fault; His PFC made him do it!

Instead, I learned a great deal from this book. I wish the science had been there years ago. Besides getting a peek into the seemingly unfathomable teen-age brain, Walsh gave valuable information about how to handle the problems that come up as a result of the difficult transition known as adolescence. I see this information not so much as an excuse for poor behavior as it is a guide to lead people away from it. I recommend this book to teachers or anyone who has a child younger than 25!

Book Description

From a fear of spiders to panic attacks, kids have worries and fears, just like adults. But while adults have access to a lot of helpful information, that hasn't been true for kids—until now. Drawing on his years of experience helping children deal with anxiety, Dr. James Crist has written a book that kids can turn to when they need advice, reassurance, and ideas. He starts by telling young readers that all kids are scared and worried sometimes; they're not alone. He explains where fears and worries come from and how the mind and body work together to make fears worse or better. He describes various kinds of fears and suggests ten Fear Chasers and Worry Erasers kids can try to feel safer, stronger, and calmer. The second part of the book focuses on phobias, separation anxiety, OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder), and other problems too big for kids to handle on their own, and explains what it's like to get counseling. Includes a special "Note to Grown-ups" and a! list of resources.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful conversation starter.......2007-10-11

This book was wonderful and a tool I'll use with my 9-year old son again! It was a conversation-starter because I was able to learn things that made my son anxious about that I wasn't even aware of and he felt less isolated because I completed the activities with him and was able to show him that everyone fears some things.

My son really enjoyed reading it and it was a great bonding opportunity.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to read and understand.......2007-09-24

This book has been a wonderful resource for my anxious child (and for me). He is able to turn to this book full of strategies and real life examples independently to not only reassure him he is not different or alone but also give him insight and control of the anxiety producing situations around him and his reactions to them. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect!.......2007-08-23

This is a great book for anyone working with children. I lays out everything you need to address anxieties and it lables the anxieties for what they are - I love that. Includes forms, activities, and little stories that children can relate too. This is an excellent guide to get you going when working with children. Would also be useful for parents to read to increase their understanding of the disorders.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE FOR CHILDREN WHO HAVE FEARS........2006-10-12

I have read this book with my two boys ages 8 and 10. We all have anxiety in different degrees and I am trying to help them to learn to cope and move forward. I cannot recommend this book enough to loved ones and parents who have children with fears or worries that are causing problems in their daily functioning. I have read many books on this subject and never found one as good as this for children and even for adults to use. I would not think twice about buying this book if anyone in your home struggles with fears. Bravo for finally writing a book on this subject that children can use. Childhood is where we need to begin to help in this area.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best self-help books for children ever written.......2004-06-11

As a child and family therapist, I am constantly searching for books to use with the children that I work with. I am usually disappointed with most books that address problems of childhood, because they either treat the subjects too lightly and offer no real solutions for children who have already used the obvious ideas, or are far too complex for the average child to relate to. This book is wonderful. Not only is it written in extremely child-friendly terms, it is comprehensive and gives many good-quality, proven techniques for dealing with fear and anxiety.

Topics includes: what kids are typically scared or worried about, where fears come from, how the body and mind work together to make fears better or worse, "fear chasers and worry erasers" (coping skills), written exercises, and a chapter on more intense fears including phobias, separations anxiety, generalized anxiety disorder, panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. The book finishes off with a chapter that answers children's questions about what to expect from counseling, should they need extra help overcoming their fears. A note to parents is included, which offers additional information on how to support children with their fears.

I highly recommend this book, and wish that the author would write many more books like this one!!
