Book Description
ASP.NET 2.0 Programming: Problem Design Solution is aimed at describing, designing, and implementing a site much like the ones you’re probably working on or will be soon, while taking the opportunity to introduce and explain many of the new features that the new great ASP.NET 2.0 framework offers. Difficult problems are addressed head-on so you'll be ready for most of the problems you’ll typically face when writing a modern website, and have one or more solutions ready for them.
Unlike many other ASP.NET books that show examples for individual pages or features, the example in this book is an integrated end-to-end site (written in C#). The entire book and site has been written specifically for ASP.NET 2.0, to use the ASP.NET 2.0 features wherever they make sense.
The end-result is a website which features a layout with user-selectable themes, a membership system, a content management system for publishing and syndicating articles and photos, polls, mailing lists, forums, an e-commerce store with support for real-time credit card processing, homepage personalization, and localization. The book leads the reader through development of a site with:
- Account registration, personalization and theming
- News and events, organized into categories
- Opinion polls
- Newsletter
- Forums
- E-commerce store with shopping cart and order management
- Localization
Administration of a site will be covered including:
- Full online back-end administrative section, to manage practically all data from an intuitive user interface
- Site deployment
In building these site features, you'll learn these new ASP.NET 2.0 features:
- Master pages
- Theming
- Personalization & Web parts
- Membership & Profile modules
- Personalization
- The new server-side UI controls such as GridView, DetailsView, FormView, Wizard, MultiView, the new xxxDataSource and navigation controls, among others.
- The new compilation mode and deployment modes
- The new framework for instrumenting the site, as well as handling & logging exceptions
- The new ADO.NET 2.0 features (e.g. caching with database dependency)
- The new classes for easy distributed transactions Management
This book is also available as part of the 5-book ASP.NET 2.0 Wrox Box (ISBN: 0-470-11757-5). This 5-book set includes:
- Professional ASP.NET 2.0 Special Edition (ISBN: 0-470-04178-1)

Customer Reviews:
Nice overview of how to implement 2.0 features........2007-10-06
Overall, I think the book was a good investment and well worth the read. It lives up to everything that the title implies. The only reason that I didn't give it five stars is that the links for downloading the code have been broken since I got the book (several weeks now). It would be very helpful to have the project open and be able to reference the code directly rather that having to page back to revisit code that has already been covered, but is now being referenced as the project progresses.
A great idea, a very good implementation.......2007-09-08
When I ran across the 1.1 version of this book, I had hoped there would be an update for 2.0. I love the idea of the book - a complete project run from beginning to end.
Marco's explanations and examples generally very good and I feel like he accomplished what it looks like he set out to do with the book. The project used in the book is a solid foundation for learning about ASP.Net 2.0 covering a wide range of topics.
Generally speaking, this book has gotten a lot of use, whether looking for something specific that Marco did, an idea on how I might do something, or comparing notes on my approach vs the one in the book.
I am giving the book 4 stars (instead of 5) simply because I think he could have covered a couple of things in a little more depth and still kept the flow and feel of the book overall.
Good ASP.NET book but not for beginners.......2007-08-25
The title of this book should be *Advanced* ASP.NET Problem - Design - Solution. This is not a book for those new to ASP.NET (at the ASP.NET page http://www.asp.net there is a section that includes ASP.NET books divided by beginner and professional; very useful). This book is for the developer who has programmed at least 6 or so websites with ASP.NET and wants to get into creating forums, mailings list, profiling, allowing the user to choose their own themes/skins, etc. The author assumes you have a firm handle on ASP.NET (also on HTML, CSS, Object oriented programming, C#, SQL and SQL stored procedures, n-tier design of web apps, etc) and quickly moves into advanced programming with ASP.NET. I would rate this book highly because it does cover a lot; it's just not practical for beginners or even intermediate level ASP.NET developers.
Good reviews - bad book.......2007-07-31
I bought this book because of the rave reviews. Once I began to read, however, I found it disappointing. Explanation and examples are vague and/or incomplete. The author should be forced to take a basic writing course before he is allowed to write anything more then a letter. Shame on the editors for letting this type of document out under the guise of instruction.
The best book about Asp .Net 2.0.......2007-07-07
Some months ago Giuseppe Dimauro advised me about this book, saying that it is a relly good book and i bought it. I I have read it in two weeks.
What to say about the best book about Asp .Net 2.0 ?
Everyone will read it will understand something new.
Thanks Marco.

will never help developer.......2006-09-26
I was extremely surprised to see this book. as a developer I couldn't make a single thing. it was more like reading a brochure for a product. By finishing the book I knew so many features that are in the product but I had no idea how to use them.
My advice: if you are a developer then don't even think about buying this book.
Great for project managers. Poor for developers........2005-03-15
I was a little let down by this book because I wanted to get both an overview of Commerce Server and a bit more detail in the API. There simply aren't enough examples to articulate the writers' points. I'm learning that Commerce Server is much like chess -- it takes a few minutes to learn, and a lifetime to master. This book is supposed to guide its reader from design to coding and implementation as well as testing. Instead, it only handles design and very basic uncommon development scenarios.
I feel this book would be better geared to a project manager or architect trying to learn how Commerce Server can be beneficial to an eCommerce project; however, I don't feel a developer can properly learn to use Commerce Server from this book.
Amazing.......2005-03-03
I found the portions written by Clayton Peddy to be
Amazing, I can not stress how much this book changed
the way I think about the subject
-5 Stars - Worthless and next to useless.......2005-02-23
Don't waste your time with this book, The sample site doesn't build the examples they do give in the book aren't even used in their code. If you plan on building a commerce server web site and don't know commerce server already this book won't help you. In fact, even if you do know commerce server this book won't help you. With out a doubt the most worthless, development book I have ever had the miss fortune to read. I have found one use for it...as a monitor stand.
please debug your code.......2004-08-13
sample store does not work.
i don't have time to debug my own code let alone sample code from a book :)
the book does give a good overview of commerce 2002 (unfortunally there's nothging to compate it to)
where are you wrox !

Microsoft Commerce Solutions explains Microsoft's vision for the architecture of custom applications developed with its tools. This architecture allows programmers to attach a variety of processing algorithms--and user interfaces--to a common database. The book provides conceptual information before giving some details on the technologies used to implement it in various situations.
Chief among these technologies is Microsoft Site Server 3, the capabilities of which (along with Site Server Commerce Edition and Microsoft Transaction Server) receive much attention in these pages. Readers get a rundown on how to operate the servers in a variety of situations. One particularly useful example walks readers through the creation of a Web storefront with a minimal amount of coding, while another sets up a sophisticated system for displaying banner ads on Web pages.
In addition to outlining what the server software can do, the various contributors get into the mechanics of writing server-side scripts in the form of Active Server Pages (ASP) with embedded JavaScript, JScript, and VBScript. The authors include enough explanatory and illustrative material on each language that even novice programmers will feel comfortable.
The publisher ought to put more effort into copyediting future editions, though--Microsoft Commerce Solutions has too many spelling and grammar goofs. But if you're looking for a comprehensive introduction to the technologies Microsoft has for processing and publishing information, this book's for you. --David Wall

This book help me very much.......2000-04-17
this is only book that i can buy in china which about site server.I want to find a book about site server for long time ,and now ,i find it. if you want to learn someting about site serve, you can buy it .if you want to master site server, you can throw it.
Too hard for beginners, too basic for advanced.......2000-04-10
If you are a beginner, this book is useless. The code is riddled with errors, the instructions are minimalist, and the concepts are poorly explained.
Previous reviews from advanced users are (no offense) misleading because these users generally skim the chapters that they find interesting, without trying to follow along with the examples.
Vendor bias also takes away from the usefulness of this book. All of Microsoft's products' strengths are noted, with none of their weaknesses. How can you form an intelligent opinion on commerce solutions with such slanted information?
Stick with Wrox press, and you'll go far...
Good for introduction.......2000-03-20
The reason why I gave this book only two stars does not mean that I find it a bad book but It was of no use to me.
I bought the book and hoped it would help me to get more in-dept knowledge of Commerce Server but it only scratched the surface of this subject.
Anyway, it's a good book for someone who has no (or little) knowledge of the existing technologies which can be used to build an Internet/Intranet or E-Commerce solution. For more experienced people, they'll have to find other resources.
Good overall picture.......2000-02-23
I have been searching a long time for a book (or article) that covered the Microsoft solutions suite for e-commerce but had no luck. Finally, a collegue of mine at work recommended this to me and I'm glad to say that my search has finally ended.
This book explains how all the different microsoft technologies piece together and the functions each of them serve. There were certain things I didn't quite like about the book however. I thought the chapter covering asp and html was unnecessary as you cannot pack those two into a single chapter each. That would have dropped some weight and $$ off this book too.
If you are looking to learn about e-commerce infrastructures and also what it takes to set up a site using the microsoft dna, then this is THE book to refer to. You do not have to read this chapter by chapter (I didn't) as each chapter is self-contained.
And here's something else you might find useful too. If you are about to implement a site using the microsoft dna, then go the http://www.microsoft.com/seminar site too. Much of this book is covered by those free online seminars and you'll also get handy security and performance tuning tips (but still get the book, it's a good one to read on the bus/train).
Good Luck !

Book Description
An IT decision-maker's road map to creating scalable and reliable Windows 2000 clustered systems.
Clustering Windows 2000 explains what a cluster is and what it is not. It explains the concepts and technology from the perspective of Microsoft's Windows family of operating systems. Mauler and Beebe thoroughly explore the critical interaction and integration of state-of-the-art computer hardware with these operating systems and also with third-party layered solutions. However, more than teaching technology, the book provides a unique framework by which readers can evaluate their organizations' own clustering needs. The new Cluster Configuration MatrixC presented here allows them to determine the utility of the many clustering products and solutions given their companies' specific requirements for high availability. Clustering Windows 2000 enables IT professionals to create a highly effective clustering strategy that can grow with their organizations' needs and accommodate ongoing developments in clustering technology.
This unique book is for everyone from system designers to IT managers who want a solid understanding of the optimal products and technologies they can use in creating "clusters" of computers to support truly enterprise-caliber programs.
Demystifies Windows clustering from both a hardware and software viewpointDefines clustering terminology and concepts from a vendor-neutral perspectiveProvides a matrix for evaluating the multitude of cluster technology offerings

Cannot Stick to a topic.......2003-06-29
This gave almost no information about clustering windows servers. I believe that if you gathered up all of the information on Windows Cluster server out of this book you might fill a couple of pages. Most information is on technologies (Hardware) and theories. This book may also be good for someone who needs to build a budjet for the job. but as far as real world information goes.... Just another book on the shelf

Perfect book.......2001-12-06
This is the best book for learning about CS2K. Author has done a great job.
Too introductory. Not worth spending money for it.......2001-11-29
This is one of those books that content is way too introductory for any serious IT prfessionals that it is not even useful to be used as a reference for any real-world work we do. It is probably for those who wants to learn very basic of the product. Not worth spending money for.
Good For beginner to study.......2001-11-01
This book is good for beginner to set up the e-commerce. It's show you all basic you need to know and has good detail of example.
Nicely written.......2001-09-21
Nicely written; summarises the main features of Commerce Server 2000 and has some nice overviews of product features as well as detailed drill-downs to look at the code. This books is a useful companion to the CS2K SDK and the Wrox CS2K book. A gripe which I have levelled at the Wrox book can also be aimed at this: It focuses very heavily on the example Retail site which has received near universal criticism for some of its architectural features on the CS2K newsgroups.
Good for professional and non professional.......2001-08-22
I am working with MS commerce server 2000 for almost 1 year and our company was one of first companies which use CS2000. I studied couple books about Commerce server such as commerce server professional and commerce server 2000 resource kit , But I can say this book is so better than those and it help me very much to easily understand those concepts which I had not understod befor .
thanks to Author .
