Nan Jeffrey's classic guide to adventure travel is not to be missed by any family interested in--or even curious about--traveling off the beaten path. Jeffrey, who has traveled with twin boys and a baby, covers every possible aspect of adventure travel: hiking, biking, sailing, canoeing, and basic world roaming. You'll get down-and-dirty tips (ways to calculate how many diapers to take to a tropical island--and how to wash them), good preparation advice (learn to live in small places, study another language, take practice hikes, turn off the television), and suggestions for great family destinations. No, Jeffrey doesn't mean Club Med or Disneyland--she suggests instead Nepal, the Alps, Alaska, Guatemala, or Turkey. Adventuring with Children is not only fascinating and informative, as its subtitle promises, it's inspirational as well. Whether you're off to Bali, Chile, or Morocco, you can now be sure to have a bon voyage! --Ericka Lutz

Customer Reviews:
Not what I needed.......2007-07-26
Based on the reviews of this book, I was excited to check it out in preparation for our European and Tunisian adventure this fall. I was sadly disappointed when it arrived and I flipped through and read parts of it - granted not all, but I was not sufficiently "inspired" to read more. For one, and its a big one, this book is OLD. I thought a third edition would mean updated, and I neglected to look at the publishing date. My fault. It is pre 9-11, and I bet a lot of things have changed out there that this book does not address in re air travel and border crossings.
There was a lot of the book dedicated to camping, which if that is what you are doing, definately get it. It addresses very extended vacations, and I personally don't know a single sole who goes on a 6 month camping/biking trip to a distant locale. I read through the education part, since I want our trip to be educational for my preschooler, but was disappointed by that as well, as there was not much of use to me there.
The only things that I saw as useful were pretty common knowledge if you have traveled before. I am glad for others to have been inspired by this book, but personally, it does not help me one bit.
So, please enjoy if it sounds right for you, but as for me, I will be sending it back. Maybe you'll get my copy.
Inspirational and also very practical.......2004-03-06
I still haven't had a chance to use the tips from this book, since our trip to Greece with our one-year-old is planned for a few months from now. I can say that reading so many real-life, much more complicated examples of Ms. Jeffrey's family's own travels have made planning a few weeks in Greece seem like no big deal, though.
I was also pleasantly surprised to read so much about the things her children learned through travel at different ages, as well as through the homeschooling done on the road. (Ms. Jeffries also provides very useful homeschooling references.) Our daughter is much too young for a lot of this, but I found it all inspirational. It's amazing how much more children can learn from travel, plus reading, rather than from reading alone.
I started reading just to find the basics of how to travel with a child (what to take, how to keep entertained, etc.), but ended knowing so much about how traveling with a child will actually be more beneficial to the whole family than I ever imagined.
World class book for world class adventures...with children.......2000-06-24
There are many travel books on the market, and there are many travel books for those who have children. This books stands out because the author actually took her kids on wonderful, real "adventures," not just tame camping trips in the U.S. She and her husband traveled to remote places (Morocco, Spain, Bali, Nepal, New Zealand...), kids in tow, and share the experience with us through text and photos. They sailed, biked, hiked, and drove about, and lived for several weeks in different countries.
While most books of this sort will list things to bring along, the author gives us real explanations for each of the things she brings--and she doesn't bring much--and tells us how to make do with less. Invaluable are her personal stories of medical needs, literary needs (her boys brought a few books and exchanged books with other travelers), laundry and social needs. There is even a terrific discussion of diapering while traveling!
Perhaps my favorite section, as a homeschooling mom, is her chapter on education while on the road. The author truly sees the educational value of travel. No doubt her boys were very well educated by their many adventures. They learned foreign languages and the differences between many cultures. Thinking of adventuring?Buy it, and you'll want to try it!
Book Description
Discover a hidden world in your own city!
From Ninjalicious, the author of Infiltration zine, comes Access All Areas, the the first published guide to the exciting art of urban exploration, a rapidly growing hobby that allows participants to personally experience their cities’ hidden and off-limits spaces. Through chapters on topics like sneaking around, equipping and training, readers will learn the basics of the hobby, as well as about the most popular sites for urban exploration, such as abandoned buildings, construction sites, storm drains and utility tunnels.
Always an adventurer, Toronto author Ninjalicious began his intensive, thoroughly documented approach to exploration during a lengthy hospital stay, when boredom motivated him to explore the beautiful old building’s every nook and cranny. He began publishing the zine Infiltration in 1996, in conjunction with the website infiltration.org, which, with nearly 2,000 visitors a day, is widely considered to be an authoritative source on the hobby of urban exploration. Ninjalicious completed Access All Areas shortly before his untimely death from cancer in summer 2005.

Customer Reviews:
Urban Exploration 101.......2007-09-11
For anyone in the "Urban Exploration" scene, the name Ninjalicious is almost legendary. Not that he was one of the first to explore tunnels and old buildings, but he was one of the first to really achieve some level of fame for doing so. So the source for this information is more than credible.
If you are a veteran explorer, this book probably will not tell you much you don't already know. If you are just beginning to explore, this may be a helpful guide, but you'd be better off finding experienced people and going with them. A little experience and a good amount of common sense should see you through.
That said, I still would recommend this book to any active or armchair explorer. The author's humor makes reading this book a joy and the personal stories he includes are highly entertaining. So if nothing else, read it for fun. Plus, you never know. There may be a gem or 2 of wisdom in there for even the most veteran explorer.
A great book by a great man.......2007-01-12
As a long time urban explorer, this book didn't really tell me much I didn't already know or that a little common sense couldn't figure out once you have been to a few places. That fact notwithstanding, this is a great introductory book to the art of urban exploration, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to get into the hobby. It has lots of good pointers that would have been a lot easier to read then they were to figure out in my own.
Every urban explorer's MUST HAVE guide........2007-01-10
A comprehensive book outlining the ins and outs of urban exploration; no stone is left unturned. If you're into urban exploration and photography, this book is an essential tool to enhance your adventures. Read it again and again and keep it in your camera bag/backpacks.
A decent book about an interesting subject.......2006-11-10
This book is a nice introduction to the world of urban exploration. At times, it is patronizing and sounds like it was written by a kid for a kid, but the spirit of the information is sound.
Excellent read, even if you don't plan to infiltrate anything.......2006-02-06
I grabbed this book from the library because the subject intrigued me - not because I plan to infiltrate anything, but rather just because I wanted to read about it. And what a great read it turned out to be. Ninjalicious writes very well and with a good sense of humour. He covers the subject thoroughly (I can't imagine he overlooked anything) and with a good attitude. I enjoyed the several brief anecdotes scattered throughout the book describing infiltrations which Ninjalicious conducted (and documented with photos), and I particularly enjoyed the chapter on social engineering (the principles of which are applicable to many day-to-day non-infiltration encounters). Highly recommended.

It also explores how tourist itineraries, behavior, and literature support larger cultural objectives. Drawing upon case studies in the United States, Cuba, Ghana, Greece, France, Italy, Libya, Mauritius and Spain, Architecture and Tourism explores the touristic experience, representation and meaning of place within distinct cultural contexts. From the former sites of the slave trade on the Ghanean coast to the urban renewal of Old Havana and the honeymoon resorts in the Poconos, this book provides provocative insights into the practice of tourism and the conception of place.

Kirkus Discoveries Review.......2005-07-17
Kirkus Discoveries Review:
A college instructor shares his plan to help independent bookstores survive: shopping trips specially designed foróand marketed toótourist readers.
Portzline conceived the idea for bookstore tourism after hearing a fellow community college instructor explain restaurant adventures he led in New York City. Wanting to own a bookstore himself, Portzline figured he could learn about the business by leading tourists on buying trips, beef up the bottom lines of independent retailers, earn money for himself and encourage reading.
As of last August, Portzline had organized and led six bookstore tourism groups -- five to Greenwich Village in New York City and one to the Georgetown and Dupont Circle neighborhoods in Washington, D.C. Portzline's whim eventually evolved into a self-styled grassroots campaign -- he launched a Web site (BookstoreTourism.com), actively sought media attention and penned his guide to organizing journeys to independent retailers.
The handy how-to section covers many common questions: Do you have to be some kind of expert to do this?; Who should consider planning a bookstore road trip?; What's the main purpose of your trip?; Will it cost anything to get started?; Who are you inviting?; How will you handle reservations?; Where do you want to go?; How long do you want the trip to be?; What day will you go?; etc.
Even for those who don't take action with groups of their own, Portzline's guide is engaging reading because of the specific independent stores he mentions. They're not necessarily the most famous bookstores in the nation, nor does Portzline attempt to provide a comprehensive list. But each retailer has its own story to tell, and most will hold the interest of any book enthusiast.
A slim but invigorating guide to an appealing and promising concept.
One of the most inexpensive & useful book oriented resources.......2005-03-07
Bookstore Tourism: The Book Addict's Guide To Planning & Promoting Bookstore Road Trips For Bibliophiles & Other Bookshop Junkies by author and bibliophile Larry Portzlne is a combination tour guide, planner, and celebration of the independent bookstore. The result of the author's campaign of innovative grassroot efforts to promote and support independent bookstores through identifying them as a tourist destination and crating a new travel niche specifically designed for booklovers, Bookstore Tourism is as much fun as it is informational and is a superbly conceived and executed tool for the promotion of reading, literacy, travel, tourism, independent bookstores, and a shared love of books. There is also a very special serendipity with respect to Bookstore Tourism. It is an ideal reference and resource for authors and small press publishers seeking to create their own book tours, establish bookstore events within the community of independent bookstores across the nation. Of special note and value are the appendices providing contact information for national bookseller associations; regional bookseller associations; American literary and book festivals; a listing of books about books, bookstores, and reading groups; and state-by-state resource listings for agencies and bureaus dealing with the arts, economic development, history, libraries, and tourism. One of the most inexpensive and useful book oriented resources, the 104-page Bookstore Tourism is enthusiastically recommended for bibliophiles, authors, publishers, and booklovers everywhere.
A truly original idea.......2004-11-15
"Bookstore Tourism" is a great little book and an even better idea. The book delves into why it's so important to support indie bookstores, and how they're fighting for their lives against the large retail chains, not just B&N and Borders but WalMart and basically any other major conglomerate that sells books. The ideas in the book are great and very helpful, telling people how to go about planning road trips with friends and other groups to towns with excellent independent bookstores. It's an interesting, enjoyable read and I highly recommend it. My only criticism is that it's too short and the author should expand it and do even more with the idea. When is Bookstore Tourism Part 2 coming out like the author hinted?
From the Author.......2004-11-11
Bookstore Tourism Creates Travel Niche for Booklovers, Helps Indie Bookstores
"Bookstore Tourism" is an innovative grassroots effort started by Harrisburg, PA writer Larry Portzline to promote and support independent bookstores by marketing them as a tourist destination and creating a new travel niche for booklovers. The primary goal is to encourage booklovers around the country to organize day-trips and other kinds of literary outings to cities and towns with interesting, fun and unique bookstores that people in their own communities may not be able to visit regularly.
Between July 2003 and June 2004, Portzline led six sold-out "bookstore adventures" to New York City and Washington, D.C. for two colleges in central Pennsylvania. Since launching the project, he's received countless inquiries and expressions of support from people in the bookselling, publishing and travel industries, from educators, libraries and colleges, from book festival and "One Book" organizers, and from booklovers everywhere who are eager to get involved.
"Bookstore Tourism" covers the basics of planning and promoting a bookstore road trip, including how to do the necessary research, arrange transportation, publicize the event, etc. It includes numerous tips and step-by-step suggestions, as well as advice based on Portzline's experiences leading his own bookstore adventures. Other features include a primer on the bookselling industry, examples of great bookstore towns, suggestions for ways to partner with other organizations and agencies, and an appendix with numerous resources for anyone planning a trip.
The Chicago Tribune said, "This little volume might be just the thing to get people not only reading again but visiting their local independents. Spread the word." The Boston Globe said, "Larry Portzline has taken a novel idea on the road." The Dallas Morning News said, "Bookstore lovers now have their own guidebook." USA Today called the idea "a charming alternative" when it selected Portzline's website, BookstoreTourism.com, as a "hot site" in May 2004. Publishers Weekly said it "might be the beginning of a new concept in bookselling."
A great guide for bookstore lovers.......2004-11-11
"Bookstore Tourism" is a very interesting read that makes a strong case in support of indie booksellers. It addresses the competition between small, independent bookshops and the larger chain stores and internet merchants. It also gives numerous examples of how to organize bookstore trips with friends or with an organization or school. It's a great way to meet other book-lovers and to spend a day shopping at excellent bookshops that you might not be familiar with in another town. Mr. Portzline does a great job of spelling out how to organize such trips and why they benefit independent bookstores. It's a fantastic idea and a lot of fun! The book is enjoyable to read as well. If you love books, you can't go wrong with something like this.
Product Description
Founders of the phenomenally successful publishing company Lonely Planet, Tony and Maureen Wheeler have produced travel guides to just about every corner of the globe.
Lonely Planet Publications was born in 1973 when the Wheelers self-published a quirky travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. This was quickly followed by what soon became the backpackers bible, South-East Asia on a Shoestring. Going boldly where no other travel publisher had ventured, they catered to a new generation of independent, budget-conscious travelers long before the advent of mass tourism.
The Lonely Planet Story is a unique mix of autobiography, business history and travel book. It traces Tony and Maureen Wheeler s personal story as well as the often bumpy evolution of their travel guide business into the world s largest independent travel publishing company.
Not surprisingly, after thirty years in the business the Wheelers have an unrivalled set of anecdotes which they share in The Lonely Planet Story. They have been hassled by customs, cheated by accountants, let down by writers, banned in Malawi, berated for their Burma guide and had books pirated in Vietnam. Tony has been gored by a cow in Benares, declared dead around the world in an assortment of gruesome and greatly exaggerated accounts and their company has been accused of the Lonely Planetization of the world.
Through it all, from the heady days of discovery in the 70s to the rocky patch after the September 11th terrorist attacks, the Wheelers passion for the planet and traveling certainly hasn t diminished, and comes shining through in this enthralling travelogue. But above all, their memoir reveals the spirit of adventure that has made them, according to the New York Daily News, the specialists in guiding weird folks to weird places.
Customer Reviews:
An amzaing story - and great business case.......2007-09-04
If you love to travel and love the idea of making your passion pay for itself, then this is a must read. An open and honest look at the creation and evolution of Lonely Planet!
Be warned, this book will inspire traveling!.......2007-08-13
Interesting book on how the Lonely Planet got started. Tony Wheeler blends traveling tips and stories with the start-up of Lonely Planet and his and Maureen journey and growth as individuals.
Much more than a book about travel.......2007-06-19
I am an avid traveller who has used Lonely Planet books from Bangaldesh to Nambia. When I'm not traveling, I'm often reading about traveling.
This book about how Lonely Planet (LP) began and grew was great. I enjoyed reading about the overland travel from Europe through Asia in the early 70's and how Maureen & Tony started LP.
The book is a mix of travel, personal relationships, and business. I thoroughly enjoyed all parts. Great book for entrepreneurs & travellers alike.
Living your dreams.......2007-06-06
I'm not a person who generally reads armchair travel books. For the most part, I stick to fiction. But when my sister handed me this book and I started reading it (on the train, I was *really* bored), I just couldn't put it down!
Unlikely Destinations is more than just a travel story, although the places the Wheelers have been, how they got where they were going and what they've seen & experienced are incredibly thrilling in and of themselves. But this is also a love story between two people and between a married couple and travel, and eventually, a family of four and travel. It's a business adventure and cautionary tale, about starting your own business from nothing and turning it into a multi-million dollar company, despite or perhaps because of the many bumps encountered along the way. This is not a story about an overnight phenomenon, but rather it's about how much dedication, hard work, sacrifice and yes, love, it takes to follow the road less traveled.
I had a few minor gripes with the book, but nothing too serious. I would really have liked to have more of the story told by Maureen, and there were a few sections I felt like Tony was glossing over too much, but over all, this book just grabbed me by the throat and wouldn't let go until I finished the last page. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
