This is the "Bible" for NPD professionals. An excellent addition to the guides by Cooper and Crawford.
PDMA - Handbook for new product development.......2007-01-12
Haven't read from cover to cover, but proving to be an excellent reference. Good examples from industry reinforce key messages. Haven't learnt anything groundbreakingly new, but it has been a good confirmation or fine-tuning reference when needed.
Product Marketing Professionals - BUY THIS BOOK!.......2002-03-14
The PDMA Handbook is one of those rare and valuable books that characterizes a "body of knowledge" for a professional discipline. It was produced by the preeminent industry organization for New Product Development (NPD) professionals, the PDMA .... This text describes current, best practices in NPD and includes contributions from knowledge leaders in academia, consulting, and industry practice. If you are a CEO, COO, CTO, Marketing Manager, Product Manager, Product Planner, Engineering Manager, Project Manager, Program Manager, or any other professional involved in new product development (especially for technically complex products like hardware and software) you really need this book.
Product Managers (should) perform the nitty, gritty, roll-your-sleeves-up: opportunity analysis, business case formulation, and requirements management for new products. Research shows that judicious performance of this critical pre-work is a key determinant in the ultimate market success of new products and is usually performed inadequately. Unfortunately, most professionals in such roles have had no formal training beyond an MBA (sometimes). The PDMA Handbook provides a comprehensive treatment of virtually all the subject areas new product development (business) managers need to understand to drive the success of their endeavors. Want to know the key success factors for new products, understand value proposition, differentiation, features vs. benefits, uniqueness, sustainable competitive advantage, the fuzzy front end, pipeline management, how to plan a new product launch, manage a product portfolio, and more? This is the book you need. The PDMA Handbook is the Gray's Anatomy of product management. Buy it and READ it at least twice.
This book should have been read when it was published!.......2001-08-19
This book seem to be written by persons who really know what NPD (or NPI) really is. All those described mistakes possible to be done is made by me during last five years...this is a good book.
The area of NPD is large. Luckily people in PDMA have come to the right conclution: it is not possible for one person to handle the whole area throughly. Every chapter in this book is written by expert on his/her own area. Unfortunately the maximum size of one book restricts the possible space per one writer to include only the most vital parts into this book.
To whom I can recommend this book? --- To anyone who will to increase his/her own scope of NPD and especially to a person who already have gained some experience on this field and is able to compare his/her own experiece to this book.
Wonderful!.......2000-02-02
I purchased the PDMA Handbook on the strength of a review and have been very glad I did so. After quoting a few passage to my staff they began to borrow it, and now the Handbook has made the rounds of the office. It is worn and dog-eared, and quoted from on a daily basis.
The message of "treating each other with respect and dignity" by author Holahan et al has really struck a chord around here. Many of us believe she must be staunch Christian, one who lives her faith on a daily basis.
The PDMA Handbook has provided guidance in mapping out strategies for new services we hope to bring to market as well as the way our organization is managed. It has changed the way we do business and the way we percieve the world.
Book Description
The #1 bestselling author of Shut Up, Stop Whining, & Get a Life reveals the only thing you need to know to succeed in business: YOUR SUCCESS IS YOUR OWN DAMN FAULT!
Some authors of business books stroke your ego by reinforcing information you already know. Others give you detailed statistical analysis of the economy, or buying trends, encouraging you to get lost in the pages of boredom until you have no idea what the book is even about. Some authors exploit the hottest buzzword and beat it to death, without giving you any real idea how to do what they suggest must be done. Some say that all you have to do is love your job in order to be successful at it. The worst of the lot tell cute little parables through inane dialogues with messages so simple and trite that we should all be insulted. In IT'S CALLED WORK FOR A REASON, Larry Winget tells the unvarnished truth about what it takes to be successful:
NOT business jargon (Forget branding! Forget thinking outside the boxyou're not in a box!)
NOT parables (Who cares who moved your cheesewhat cheese?)
NOT praise sandwiches (talk about cheese!)
Just the one key ingredient to success in business:
Work!
Are you frustrated with a lack of results at work? Have you hit a wall? Are you uninspired, stuck in a rut, feeling underappreciated? Well, good news: your success is not up to your boss, your manager, your employees, or the economy. It's up to YOU. Business is never bad, people are just bad at being in business. If that makes you mad, this book is for you. Larry Winget hacks through the bad advice given in most business books, explaining why
* Teamwork doesn't work
* We are all stealing from our companies and ourselves
* Success is simple
* Results are everything
* You don't have to love your job (but it helps!)
You will be surprised, you will laugh, and you will discover motivation you never knew you had. Let Larry Winget shock you out of your comfort zone, and into a whole new league.

Hidden Gems within a Rant.......2007-09-07
I've said before, "I admire a book that delivers what it promises." In this book of `Larry Winget Opinions', you get what the author promises, "...parts of this book you won't like.... I am going to take on the issues of .... Leadership and management ... give it to you straight....use words you are familiar with.... because I talk like you do." If he had added, "...because I like to talk..." the promises would have been even more complete. Does that mean I don't like the book - quite the opposite! This is a very good book with many, many grains of truth (in my opinion) delivered in a fast pace, rant, by a guy with a great sense of humor about life, at least as he tells it.
While Winget works hard to be an in-your-face kind of guy, he stands on a pretty firm foundation of leadership and performance fundamentals. His `no victims allowed', `take responsibility for who you are and what you accomplish' (or don't accomplish) position with individuals is a great starting point. Now, we might debate the `how's' of leading people into responsibility, but I am not thinking this guy has a lot of patience for discussing the finer points of human psychology. He also is clear that the uniqueness (Me Inc.) of individuals, "discover your uniqueness and learn to exploit it in the service of others...." is a person's greatest asset. And, his eight ATE's of leadership cover a lot of leadership ground. On the negative side, his experiences lead him to some disputable positions (my opinion) with regard to teams and teamwork, but then when you spend 236 pages giving opinions on everything from selling to socializing, most readers can find at least a few, "parts of this book you won't like." I recommend you read this book to discover for yourself, what opinions of Larry Winget you don't like - the many you do like will make it worth the read. 1st business book.......2007-08-28
It's my first time to read a business book, so can't give you much comparison with others.
It's very helpful indeed! Why? Lots of new ideals, very creative! There are relative areas in boss, CEO, Manager, and worker, but the most important part is about "yourself".
I borrowed this book from library first, then I found out it is very useful for my new company, so I bought one for later to read it again to remind me some important point of views about the business.
This book changed lots of my views, such as how and why to reward your employees,"Things That Have to Get Done" list, 20-60-20 rule, etc
It's worth to spend your sometime on this book, read it slowly, it took me TWO WEEKS to read the whole book (only 240 pages), as there are too much to think about it when I was reading this book. It will give you a whole new concept about WORK.
Read this book and then give it to someone who needs it.......2007-08-15
I would buy this book for everyone I supervise out of my own pocket. The reduction in leadership stress would be worth the cost. It should be required reading for every government and union employee.
It's unvarnished truth. It told me everything I already knew about others, but also things I was afraid to admit about myself.
I closed the book feeling motivated, something he says he does not do.
The lessons are simple and a little simplistic. He ignores, glosses over, or dismisses the difficult problems. I think he's fully aware they exist and trusts that you will deal with them as you see fit. His book lives up to his unoriginal concept that a good solution today is better than a perfect solution tomorrow.
I was planning on writing a book about bad customer service. This guy stole all my best lines as if he reached into my head and plagiarized it. At this point, all I could add is anecdotes and whining.
Reading it, you will find contradictions. For example, he says not to bash your competition but he does exactly that about other authors/speakers numerous times. I think he's aware of every contradiction too and trusts you are smart enough to know when different situations call for different measures.
All of us who "get" this book know the real world is harder than he portrays. But all of us who "get" this book know that 90% of people out there need to "get" this book.
He criticizes leadership by acronym, but then gives us the 8 ATE's. He explains why he does it. But his explanation would exonerate every other leader with acronyms, rhymes, alliteration and other mnemonics. He's right, on both counts.
Frankly, as a leader, teacher and economist I could criticize this guy's book all day long...and I would STILL recommend you read it and that your employees read it.
If you don't think this book has value, you are probably either a lazy piece of $^!+ or a pompous @$$ who fails to recognize the dark description of yourself in its pages.
Do you like getting yelled at?.......2007-08-11
Larry Winget is not everybodies cup of tea, but the guy is pretty good if you can handle the gruffness. Personally, I like him, so I liked the book. I half-expected the entire book to be in CAPITAL LETTERS like he is shouting at the reader. The guy gets right to the point. If you hate fluffy writing, this book is for you.
Larry will tell you whats wrong with your business.......2007-08-07
I first saw Larry Winget on "The Millionaire Inside Us" on CNBC. Every time he spoke I agreed with what he had said. I decided to look up his book on Amazon.com. When I went to order "Shut Up, Stop Whining, and Get a Life", I saw I could get "Its Called Work for a Reason" (also by Winget) at a discount. So I bought both.
In "Shut Up, Stop Whining, and Get a Life", Larry definitely tells it like it is. He makes you feel uncomfortable... enough so you want to change. If you don't like where you are in life, this book is a must read. It will help you to see things that are true about yourself but no one would ever say... except Larry.
In "Its Called Work for a Reason" again Larry tells it like it is. This book also helps you make changes in your life, although it is dedicated more to the work place. He helps open your eyes and correct what I call tunnel vision (when you get so used to things the way they are, you don't notice them anymore). In one section he says "if your business isn't doing as well as you think it should, here's why..." When I was reading it, I thought Larry was talking about MY store. I am going to have my managers and employees read this one too.
I have read many self-help books before. The ones I have read do not compare to the ones by Larry Winget. The two listed above work together and should be bought and read as a set. If you do just a few of the suggestions Larry makes, you may have a better life and become a better person.
I am going to write to Larry Winget thanking him for his insight. I am going to start implementing the ideas and suggestions in his books. Six months from now, I am going to send Larry a follow-up letter to let him know how much better he has helped me become (personally and professionally). I suggest you buy and READ his books, and then do the same thing.
Thank-you Larry.

not much help-not much new.......2007-05-13
This book did not have anything really new to say-and so many others have said all of what is here in much more unique ways. I did not find it of any significant help.
Not quite what I expected.......2007-05-13
I was referred to this book from Louise Hay's site and fully expected it to have a more spiritual content. It is a good book for busy working women who want to get more time for themselves and maybe discover more of who they are. I am a stay-at-home mother who has lots of me time and knows herself pretty well but I was looking for a book on how to expand my life and make it more exciting now that my children are older. It wasn't that book.
Can't think of anyone who shouldn't read this!!.......2007-05-11
What a wonderful book--perfect for women (or men, for that matter--I passed it on to my husband!!) in any stage of their lives. I loved the gardening analogy--it really clicked with me. The exercises were so easy to do, and so eye-opening! I particularly appreciated the "values orbit"--genius! What a simple idea for such an important thing for all of us to do--prioritize our lives. Once I looked at what was most important in my values orbit, I was really able to focus on that and "weed out" some other parts of my life that were taking my time away from my REAL priorities.
This really is a terrific book--well-written, easy to follow, simple but vital to any busy person's life. And the authors are so accomplished and have such impressive careers, yet seem so approachable and make reading this book and following its steps a real pleasure.
Perfect book for someone wanting to make a change-.......2007-05-08
This book is wonderful. It is full of practical ideas and suggestions that allow you to change your life. Repotting is a perfect comparison to reinventing yourself.

Good Presentation of Yet Another RCA Method.......2006-01-07
This was a good-great book for the Apollo method but as one who has read a lot of these types of books, e.g., TQM, I found the sales pitch a little strong. The explanations were excellent with a step-by-step development, but I see nothing special here. Almost any RCA book will provide similar material. An alternative to this book could be: "Root Cause Analysis A tool for total quality management," or "Quality Improvement Toos & Techniques." The later is an excellent overview of the methods available for investigating problems --- and it is fairly inexpensive. I recommend Dean Gano's book if the Apollo RCA is your flavor.
A unique approach.......2004-01-22
Apollo is the name given by the author to his unique approach to root cause analysis. I'm assuming this (Apollo) explains why there is a naked man on the cover, either that or this is the most unique author photo I have ever seen. The book focuses on causal relationships, emphasizing that there are often many causes (factors) contributing to an undesirable outcome. The author's insights on casual relationships and human behavior are extraordinary, it is obvious he is passionate about this topic and has had extensive experience with it. In addition to explaining " A new way of thinking", the author details specific tools (his own version of a cause-and-effect chart) that are the core of the Apollo method. And just when I started thinking that it would be great if there was software available to do this, he mentions that he has such a product available.
There were a few things I didn't like about the book. In fact, after receiving the book, the combination of the naked dude on the cover (which still creeps me out) and the opening paragraph in the "How to read this book" section which you just have to say "Duh!" to, almost convinced me to not read the book at all. In addition, the branding of "Apollo" throughout the book ( frequent references to "the Apollo method", "the Apollo process", "Apollo tools") made some sections read like scripts from an infomercial. These are minor gripes though, and I'm glad I got by them and took the time to read this excellent book
Great introductory work.......2002-05-02
I teach root cause analysis and have been a practicing failure analyst for nearly 15 years. I've had the priviledge of working with some very expert people in this field. Dean Gano does a great job taking what can be a very confusing and intimidating task and making it clear and understandable.
Dean Gano has been honing his craft for many years and is well respected in the failure analysis community. The only criticism I have is that the process is more geared to providing supporting evidence for possible causes of events. There needs to be more discussion of the need for refuting evidence.
Cause analysis at its best is a structured application of scientific principles (referred to as the scientific method). What the scientific method requires is that you pose a hypothesis (a possible explanation for what has happened) and then gather evidence to support or refute the hypothesis.
I recommend that anyone interested in a better understanding of how refuting evidence is used read "The Rational Manager" by Chuck Kepner and Ben Tregoe. It's the foundational work that provides a complete solution for resolving concerns (problems, decisions, etc). The "Rational Manager" has you break things down and deal with them separately. Dean Gano's book helps you see the larger picture. The other book I use as required reading for our root cause analysts is "Managing the Risks of Organizational Accidents" by James Reason. Together, these three references will help you to significantly improve your ability to resolve problems and will be the three books you will refer to over and over again.
A "Must Read" for anyone investigating failure incidents.......2002-02-02
After several years of pumping equipment failure analysis engineering, this is by far the best book I've read about the failure analysis and problem solving process. Dean Gano's approach covers the full spectrum of associated issues in a very efficient and flexible manner. He challenges a lot of failure analysis "conventional wisdom" in a very convincing manner, truly creating "a new way of thinking" that should greatly improve failure solutions.
Excellent for doing Med Error Root Cause Analysis..........2001-06-28
Read several books and this seems to get to the heart of the matter in the least amount of time. Book is well written, to the point and will get you going within 24 hours.

A proven system for improving your own work and for working better in a team
Used by such organizations as the Walt Disney Company, Silicon Graphics, the Federal Reserve Bank, and the CIA, the Enneagram is a proven psychological system based on nine number types that helps people achieve self-awareness and develop strategic approaches to interpersonal interactions. In Bringing Out the Best in Yourself at Work, Enneagram teacher and business consultant Ginger Lapid-Bodga shows professionals how to apply this popular tool to their work as a way to improve their productivity and help them build positive relationships among coworkers. This practical guide explains how to use the Enneagram to:
- Communicate more effectively
- Provide constructive feedback
- Prevent and resolve conflict
- Bring out their strongest leadership skills
- Discover methods for professional development
- Work better in teams
Customer Reviews:
Finally..........2006-08-26
The genuine nugget in this book is its use of the Enneagram to move forward the original Center for Creative Leaderhip research about what derails successful professionals. Lapid-Bogna's gift is to communicate the most profound and deeply thoughtful insights with deceptively casual language. I agree it needs to be read twice: Once to understand the techniques it describes, and a second time to appreciate how she builds on her hard-earned understanding of what works and doesn't work in OD and career development. Then, consider reading it a third time to appreciate the Enneagram for the doors it opens to truly deep personal growth. Not just another book written as a practice-building marketing piece for the author. It contains enough material for at least two books.
The most practical enneagram book out there for business applications.......2005-10-03
I love this book. I am an executive coach and I find this very useful for helping my Enneagram-aware clients apply the model directly and quickly to work situations -- to help debug relationships, communications, conflilct, etc.
I especially like Lapid-Bogda's distinctions and examples around "Pinch" and "Crunch" for each of the types.
I don't know of any other books except Michael Goldberg's "The Nine Ways of Working" that fill this business-application niche quite so well.
Highly recommended for those who need a practical, hands-on way of using the Ennegram in day to day work interactions.
Betsy Siwula Brandt, Breakthrough Consulting, Santa Fe, NM .......2005-09-03
Finally a groundbreaking book on the 9 ways of working that can be handed to your HR director! Enneagram Personality System books started being published in the 1980's; not until now has there been one that systematically applies this system to organizations. As an organization development consultant, I have always found the enneagram to be essential to my executive coaching and development. Now, in a practical and most excellent way, Lapid-Bogda applies the system to all key areas of organization life-- including employee feedback, conflict in teams, leadership and team development, etc. You can take the applications and use them immediately on the change initiatives you already have underway in your orgaization-- such as your 360 degree feedback sessions.
Not only does Lapid-Bogda make it easy for you to apply this system, but once familiar with her book and work, the reader can order tailor made tools that go with each organization topic that will further assist your ease of application.
If you are "stuck" in your own personal career development or trying to lead others in theirs-- and looking for a breakthrough-- then buy this book!
A Life Changing Book.......2005-08-20
This book has helped me in ways that I never imagined. The information in this book has been extremely useful in my quest to better understand myself and others. "Bringing Out the Best in Yourself at Work" is very much a must read for anyone interested in improving their relationships at work and in life in general.
Personality Traits in the Business Environment.......2004-09-01
This is a book on using the Enneagram system specifically oriented to todays business environment. The Enneagram is not unlike other personality oriented systems. First an individual is asked to examine nine different personality types and to identify himself with one. Then the Enneagram, a diagram of the interaction of the various types can be used to predict behavior.
The book, however, reverses the normal trend in personality testing books where the book is organized around the personality type. Instead the book describes several common business situations and then describes how the various personality types react to the situation.

Advance praise for Developing Products in Half the Time Second Edition New Rules, New Tools Preston G. Smith * Donald G. Reinertsen "This is an exceptional book! Get a new highlighter before you start. There are so many 'ah ha's' in each chapter you will never make it through with an old one." Don LaCombe, Ford Motor Company, Product Development Process Leadership "An excellent book with a strong treatment of the cycle-time consequences of overloading your development capacity. It provides powerful and practical concepts for dealing with this issue." Andrew Aquart, Director Product Development, Cordis, a Johnson & Johnson Company "This is practical, useful stuff for people competing in highly competitive fast moving business." Dr. Paul Borrill, Chief Scientist, Sun Microsystems "3M has absorbed many of the tools from the original edition, and this new one will be even more useful. The topic of incremental innovation is crucial to us, and I really appreciate its balanced treatment." Ronald H. Kubinski, Manager New Product Commercialization Services, 3M Company "As the authors correctly point out, the Fuzzy Front End is the least expensive place to reduce cycle time. This book is one of the only sources of concepts, methods, and metrics for compressing this critical portion of the development process." David M. Lewis, Product Manager, Eastman Kodak Co. "Using these tools we've more than cut our time to market in half. The new edition of this classic crystallizes the synergy of the fast-to-market techniques, and the icons in the margins highlight the opportunities and pitfalls." Mike Brennan , Vice President of Product Development, Black & Decker

Useful tools for shortening development time.......2007-08-27
"Developing products in half the time" is a collection of tools and practices that can be used to speed up the release of your new products. The book provides a well-balanced view on how to cut the development time and especially what the trade-off is that you will probably make. Many of the tools and practice are only touched upon and would require a book on its own.
Preston Smith and Donald Reinertsen start the book by tackling some important misconceptions about fast development. Their opinion is that it's not per definition good and you really need to have a good reason to speed up the development. They continue this theme in their second chapter which gives a basic financial model that they will use during the rest of the book. It explains what trade-off will be made when saving time in a particular way. The rest of the book provides practices to save development time: starting with "the fuzzy front end". In power of incremental innovation they argue that most products can probably be developed incrementally, which reduces development time and risk a lot.
Chapter 7 and 8 are key to the book, they provide motivation for using cross-functional development teams. How to create these, how do they fit within the organization and where should you locate them. This concept is repeated probably most throughout the book.
Developing in half time is an excellent read. It's full of small ideas which can help your development process to deliver faster and explains the trade-offs well. The only criticism to this book would be that all topics are discussed only shortly. Recommended reading.
Also for a Service Organization!.......2006-11-27
A comprehensive approach to Product development and lot of advices that can be used also in a Service Environment like my own; the best book on the subject of speed to market. I still continue to suggest it as a reading to my collegues and to the students in my teachings. I also strongly recommend the Reinertsen book "The Design Factory" and I am waiting for a sequel on Lean Product Development.
THE book about product development .......2005-10-20
This book giver clear insights about product development in general. What amazed me when I read the first edition is that agile software development methodologies are clearly aligned with these book findings. Preston Smith and Reinertsen did an excellent job and succeded to create a better book in this new edition!
Keep an eye open specially to the tools listed below(number is the corresponding chapter) and watch the link with agile processes:
2. Putting a Price Tag on Time --> how to convince upper management to do small releases and work in an iterative and incremental mindset.
4. The Power and Pitfalls of Incremental Innovation --> Why to be agile and how to mitigate risks described in the disadvantages section.
5. Capturing Customer Needs --> Why to work jointly with all stakeholders and stay focused in minimal and iterative specifications.
6. Using System Design to Compress Schedules --> Why software architecture is an important activity and why projects must be planned based on architecture.
8. Organizing for Communication --> Why Co-location brings benefits most of the times.
10. Controlling the Process --> why insitute essential metrics and which are these. Aligned with information radiators practice of agile software development teams.
11. Preventing Overloads --> One of the best in the set. With great empirical evidence the authors explain why most managers do the wrong thing and try to mantain 100% people allocation. In this chapter he gives light to why is not a good thing to split people between various projects and what to do: control the project list religiously! The agile methodologies also say: Control the feature list of each project religiously :-) !
Read this book, if you want to understand why agile and iterative development processes are the way to build most software products out there!
Lightweight Chat about New product Development.......2004-10-04
Using this text to teach MBA students about new product development.
Probably the worst text I've encountered for a course, never mind lacking useful information for guiding managers in this field.
Incrediably lightweight with passing comments about rigorous engineering tools, and of little use to anyone to actually do anything relating to creativity, innovation or technology commercialization. Pick up something like Ulrich/Eppingers's "Product Design and Development" for a much more thorough and useful approach.
Excellent must-read for senior managers.......2002-01-05
I found that this book was packed full of common sense, which is rare in a development management book. Although it has a lot of examples of manufacturing of phsyical goods, I found it great as a software manager. There aren't many spare words in this book, either -- it's terse and well edited, so you get the raw facts and the necessary stories to back them up, but not a lot (or any, really) fluff.
I am putting it on my bookshelf for software engineers, right next to Writing Solid Code and Debugging the Development Process, two classics for software engineers and team leads, respectively.
Product Description
This book shows how to make a difference in the lives of customers and communities. It has been used by managers and decision makers in over 40 states and seven countries. Its plain language talk-to-action methods produce results.

Common sense? How radical!.......2007-08-29
Common sense? Lack of jargon? Plain, understandable language? Minimal paper? Humor? How can this be in a text on managing social change?
The writing shows the broad span of Mark's expertise and interests. The structure of the approach reflects linear logic that can only come from a mind trained in math. No mushy thinking here! The style shows some experience with teaching, and the humor shows a person who is comfortable with himself and who has no need to impress. Very useful!

This is a short, easy to read book that gets right to the heart of performanace measures in government agencies. A absolute "must read" book for anyone working in the public service.

Interesting book, hits you over the head with the point. could have been more and less at same time.
A Tool for All Public Sector Organizations.......2006-12-08
"Trying Hard is Not Good Enough" and the Results Accountability framework are proven and effective tools for all federal, state, local and non-profit organizations looking to improve conditions of well being for the clients they serve. Having trained or provided technical assistance in the implemention of Results Accountability to leaders in all sectors, including undergraduate students, I have found that the concepts in the book are easy to grasp by all. The book also shows how to effortlessly get from talk to action on the issues that matter most.
Laugh and learn.......2006-07-26
Finally a book on this topic that is powerful, direct, clear...and funny. Friedman has vast experience in the US and overseas in getting governments to use outcomes and it shows in this book. The advice is extremely well thought-out, effective, and fun to read. This book works if you are just learning about the topic or about to launch a major overhaul. Highly recommended.

good book.......2007-09-12
This book makes you think. I found it made me reassess everything I did and why. It gives great practical pointers on job applications but also makes you evaluate your life and put it in perspective

Unhappy with your job? Before you vote with your feet, consider the advice of career specialists Beverly Kaye and Sharon Jordan-Evans and learn to love your job. In this practical sequel to their bestseller Love 'Em or Lose 'Em, the authors focus on employee satisfaction as a responsibility you must share with your employer. Although the format of Love It, Don't Leave It: 26 Ways to Get What You Want at Work is gimmicky--the suggestions follow the 26 letters of the alphabet--the advice is smart and specific.
Based on research with 15,000 people who have job longevity, Kaye and Jordan-Evans identified five top "stay factors" such as opportunity for growth and pay equity. Using these factors, they map several dozen CPR ("Career Path Resuscitation") including taming the boss from hell, finding multiple mentors, protecting family time, bringing fun to work, breaking out of your cubicle and solving your Rodney "no respect" Dangerfield problem.
One standout chapter enriches our understanding of the out of the box metaphor by comparing the properties of glass, concrete, and vapor boxes. Rich in examples and underlined with strategies, this book will attract a wide audience. Follow your heart careerists may question the very idea of lobbying against changing jobs. Still, when the authors urge each reader to become the author of his or her job satisfaction, the book becomes a valuable companion in an uncertain economy. --Barbara Mackoff
Book Description
Love It, Don't Leave It encourages employees to assume responsibility for the way their work lives work. This is not difficult, say authors Beverly Kaye and Sharon Jordan-Evans, who take a witty and practical approach to finding job satisfaction. Presented in an appealing, accessible A to Z format, the book includes strategies for communication, career growth, balancing work with family, and more. Chapters include "Ask: And You May Receive," "Jerk: Work with One?" "Passion: It's Not Just a Fruit," and "Zenith: Are We There Yet?" The same breezy, results-minded style that made the authors' Love 'Em or Lose 'Em a bestseller makes this follow-up a fun and inspiring read.

Insightful!.......2005-08-25
Beverly Kaye and Sharon Jordan-Evans have written a useful book for employees who are tempted by greener pastures. The authors caution that those who pursue a glittering opportunity often wind up in a golden mess. Thus, it makes sense to at least try to improve your job before seeking another one that, ultimately, may be even worse. The book's format offers one item of advice for each letter of the alphabet. At times, the formula wears a bit thin (X for "X-ers and Other Generations"), but the advice itself is sound. It primarily consists of encouraging you to decide what you want and go get it. We recommend this book to currently employed malcontents (you know who you are!) and to those who need help mustering the nerve to discuss job satisfaction with their employers. Perhaps the best piece of advice is to only approach your supervisors for a favor when you understand their WIIFT: "What's In It For Them."
Think of this book as a compilation of your own notes .......2004-11-29
Think of this book as a compilation of your own notes to improve your own career. It is written exactly the way I'd organize my own thoughts and plans in a serious way to plan and grow my own career. Very practical and concise tips and easy to read. Takes few minutes to read each topic. The theme of 26 Topics for 26 alphabets is also nice. Finish it quickly and then use from time to time as a reminder to set priorities in your day to day life.
Left It, Didn't Love It.......2004-03-22
Given the rave reviews for this book, I was surprised by the lack of content and value. The book's message is a truism: only you are responsible for your own happiness. It goes on to encourage you to ask for what you want. These aren't bad assertions but they're more complicated to implement than this book would have you believe. The content is structured like an article in a woman's magazine: it uses a bulletized format with basic questions to ask yourself like "What do you enjoy" followed by inane suggestions like "Decorate your office". Cloying and without substance, this book fails to answer many core questions. What if your boss declines your request? What motivates an organization? How do you make lateral moves? Where are the examples of individuals who reengineered their work situation and how exactly they did it ? Granted, too many employees don't understand the work relationship or how to work an organization. But this is not the book that will address those issues. If you're still determined to read this book, my copy is up for sale on Amazon's used site.
Leaving or staying, read this book!.......2003-12-02
This eminently practical book reaches out to you in a real way. Clearly the authors understand the frustrations of employees and offer not one but several layers of approaches to help you get the most from your job. How to think about leaving or staying, what to ask, what to say, conversations to have, and checklists to get clear on your views all help you to make the best decisions. The authors pack so much practical assistance into one short book it is just amazing. This book is designed for fast easy reading. Don't miss out on this great treasure!!
Taking charge.......2003-11-19
What an excellent guidebook to show each employee how to take charge, have fun, be more productive, and enjoy time at work. Even the best managers and leaders can't provide all those results for their people. The employees have to do it themselves. Thanks, Bev and Sharon, for providing the guideposts along the way.

Book Description
What do you do? Tim Ferriss has trouble answering the question. Depending on when you ask this
controversial Princeton University guest lecturer, he might answer:
“I race motorcycles in Europe.”
“I ski in the Andes.”
“I scuba dive in Panama.”
“I dance tango in Buenos Aires.”
He has spent more than five years learning the secrets of the New Rich, a fast-growing subculture who has abandoned the “deferred-life plan” and instead mastered the new currencies—time and mobility—to create luxury lifestyles in the here and now.
Whether you are an overworked employee or an entrepreneur trapped in your own business, this book is the compass for a new and revolutionary world. Join Tim Ferriss as he teaches you:
• How to outsource your life to overseas virtual assistants for $5 per hour and do whatever you want
• How blue-chip escape artists travel the world without quitting their jobs
• How to eliminate 50% of your work in 48 hours using the principles of a forgotten Italian economist
• How to trade a long-haul career for short work bursts and freuent "mini-retirements"
• What the crucial difference is between absolute and relative income

• How to fill the void and create a meaningful life after removing work and the office
You can have it all—really.

Extremely useful.......2007-10-26
The 4-hour work week is a must-read for anyone interested in successfully running a business and being both effective and efficient. The book is refreshingly unorthodox and persuasive, and I am impressed with the expertise of the author and the many extremely useful tips. I am very happy with the things I have changed in my working life as a result of reading the book and am preparing to set up a business together with a friend using Tim Ferriss' principles.
Living The Mobile Livestyle Of The New Rich.......2007-10-23
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R3GPQJCB00PG7L Living the lifestyle of the new rich already, Semmy Stumpp highly recommends Timothy Ferris book "The 4 Hour Work Week". While Semmy is still a little bit away from the "4 Hours", he is absolute enthusiastic what Timothy did with his book. Not only did he describe quite accurately what happened to me (Semmy) when I had my first Million in the bank, Timothy points out all the solutions and ways to avoid the mistakes that I personally actually made big time. Thanks, Timothy and I am glad that you reminded me that I am actually on the right track here.
Great Tips on Getting Your Life in Order.......2007-10-23
Ferriss has an incredibly entertaining writing style that makes the book really hard to put down. Filled with inspirational anecdotes and more importantly, clever tips and concrete steps one can take to improve their quality of life and decrease the likelihood of being caught up in the 'rat race'. There is nothing wrong with owning your life completely. Ferriss travels the globe and shows us one universal truth: regardless of geography and status, you can own your life again by leveraging teamwork, technology and time in a way that at first may seem unfamiliar, but ultimately becomes a lifestyle.
One other book I highly recommend is Understanding: Train of Thought.
Timothy Ferriss Bueller's Day Off.......2007-10-22
Ferris Bueller, the lovable rapscallion of the comedy classic Ferris Bueller's Day off, is based on a concept by Mark Twain.
In his classic The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Twain gives an early example of outsourcing when young Tom uses reverse psychology to get his neighborhood pals to whitewash a fence for him.
While Bueller doesn't outsource his chores he is, like Tom Sawyer, a legendary school ditcher/system gamer. As Bueller explains it,
"Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."
Ferris Bueller is wise beyond his years. And so is Timothy Ferriss. How such a young squirt could have so much sound advice is beyond me. The 29-year-old is part of a wave of entrepreneurial prodigies like college student Ben Casnocha (My Startup Life), who started Comcate, a San Francisco-based software company in his bedroom when he was 14.
The 4-Hour Workweek is a textbook for the new science of "lifestyle design," as defined by Mr. Ferriss,
"Gold is getting old. The New Rich (NR) are those who abandon the deferred-life plan and create luxury lifestyles in the present using the currency of the New Rich: time and mobility. This is an art and a science we will refer to as Lifestyle Design (LD)."
The book's thesis is simple: "There is a way to get the rewards for a life of hard work without waiting until the end." Mr. Ferriss proceeds to give us 16 chapters detailing how to do it.
Chapter Two sets a bold tone for the book: Rules That Change the Rules (Everything Popular is Wrong). Mr. Ferriss cheerfully recounts how, with very little actual kickboxing experience, he gamed the system to win the Chinese Kickboxing National Championship.
He cheated! (Didn't he?) Mr. Ferriss doesn't even pause to address the issue. The chapter sets forth new rules that will help shake you out of your rut and get you started on a new life
The appearance of cheating in his kickboxing bouts, among other things, has fueled the ire of some who have trashed the book as if it were the work of Satan. The nattering nabobs of negativism are zeroing in on a couple of hot-button issues, such as personal outsourcing, to discredit the entire book.
That so many people are upset with Mr. Ferris is a sign he's onto something. He wants to stir readers from their apathy and entrenched ineffective habits.
The book is packed with hundreds of ideas and suggestions. One I haven't had the nerve to try is to lie down for a few seconds in a busy area (such as the Barnes & Noble bookstore). This is one of many "comfort challenges" he gives to get you out of your rut.
In additional to conceptual material, Mr. Ferriss provides detailed, step-by-step procedures and methods for becoming one of the NR. There are scores of references to other books and websites to enrich your search for knowledge. Mr. Ferriss introduced me to the 80/20 principle, a single tidbit that makes the book worthwhile for me.
The 4-Hour Workweek will give you a good kick in the pants. You might finish the book with a decisive "snap!" as you close the cover. By God, after reading this I can conquer the world!
Interesting concept but not very realistic.......2007-10-22
This book like others of the career self-help genre play on wide spread worker angst and offer some new unconventional advice so the author can make money. Some of the advice is workable, some of it is not. Managing workflow, controlling disruptions, delegating when possible, and the Pareto principle all make sense. This sound advice is mixed in with tidbits such as:
Go to a coffee shop and lie down on the floor to relax.
Getting fired is preferable to quitting because you can draw unemployment.
When you do get fired, you can always sell or rent your house.
Leasing a Maseratti made sense because it was only $2,000 a month.
Join the hordes selling e-books on the internet.
His lifestyle advice is almost completely unworkable for those who have spouses, children, and mortgages. Spouses and children typically don't want to live like Gypsys, kids have 9 month school years to work around, and the cost and difficulty of travel go up exponentially. Plus if your company finds out you're sending stuff to India you may get fired for leaking confidential information.
