Only one negative issue with the book: "There is a 50+ year old man on the cover". This presumably is Mr. Lonsdale. Respectfully, SWAT is a young man's game, and he looks like someone who is trying to re-live times gone by. Same goes with many of the photos in the book. In fact, many photos look 20 years old. Send someone out to any Narc unit for a day or two and get some updated photos.

Gives details and sketches for you to follow along with what each person is suppose to do. Its like a training manual for swat teams.

4 out of 5 stars RAIDS - Excellent Manual.......2006-09-22

I am a Police Officer in Colorado, and a former Active Duty Marine... I have to say that this book is a great source of information for High Risk Entry operations.

The book breaks down into the following:

Chapter One

Overview (6 Pages total):
-Raids
-Types
-Components

Individual and Team Equipment (18 pages)
-Individual
-Team
-Special Weapons

Bugetary Commitment (6 pages):
-Equipment
-Training
-Ranges

Chapter Two

Raid Training

Program Design (4 pages)

Firearms Training (10 pages):
-Firearms Policy
-Safety
-Tips for Instruction
-Training Fundamentals

Closer Quarter Shooting (10 pages):
-Principals
-Advanced Training
-Speed
-Mental Preparation
-Gunfight Survival

... and 3 more chapters with 22 additional sub-topics. The version of the book I have is the Third Printing from 1994, and the only negative thing I could say about my particular copy is that it has a ton of outdated information/pictures of equipment and tactics that are aged (ultimately having been revamped since).

Otherwise, it's a great addition for anyones toolbox, and whether you're a Law Enforcement official, military servicemember, or anyone else in a similar field, you should pick this up. I'll be getting the newest copy of the book here myself soon.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent primer for SWAT students........2006-02-18

This book is well written, and covers SWAT topics at a more realistic entry level vs. other texts I have seen having SWAT in their title. Would highly recomend to those wanting to have a section in their library titled SWAT tactics/Inddor Urban Combat in it.

5 out of 5 stars New 2005 revised edition.......2004-12-30

RAIDS was first published in 1991 but has recently been totally revised and up-dated to better reflect changes in STTU tactics and terminology for Raid planning and operations.
The January 2005 edition of RAIDs is outwardly the same (except the cover has "revised 2" under the title) but there are many changes to the text and operational checklists.
RAIDS is essential reading for anyone involved in law enforcement raid or high risk warrant operations or training.

5 out of 5 stars still one of the best.......2007-07-25

I first read "Warrant for X" 45 years ago and have read many hundreds of mysteries since. This is still one of the best "classic" British "who- dunnits" ever. It was the movie "39 Steps to Baker Street," I believe, starring Van Johnson -- but the book beats the movie by a mile. Pure enjoyment and hard to put down. The author is more famous for "The List of Adrian Messenger," but this is a better story, in my opinion, and it grabs you from the very beginning and doesn't let go.

5 out of 5 stars The butler did it!.......2001-09-24

In Philip MacDonald's world the butler just may have done it. I was watching a movie "23 Paces to Baker Street" (1956), about a blind man (Van Johnson) overhearing a kidnap and murder plot. The credits said based on a story by Philip MacDonald. The story turns out to be Warrant for X ASIN: 0394716604.
With a few differences the story was going paralleling the film then I recognized the name of Anthony Gethryn. It turns out that this book is part of a series that includes Colonel Gethryn. I have even seen another movie with him in it that was totally different from 23 paces but matched the book to a tee. The List of Adrian Messenger (1963) where George C. Scott plays Anthony Gethryn.
Naturally the book s more complex than the movie. And just incase you come in the middle of the series as I did; there is sufficient references to earlier novels to keep you from getting lost. The mystery will keep you and the edge of your seat and just as you think they have a handle on "the who, what and why," they are off and running again.

    Book Description

Ten distinct eye designs have been identified in the animal kingdom. Whereas vertebrates possess only one, invertebrates possess all ten, from simple assemblies of photoreceptors to advanced compound and camera eyes, which support a sophisticated range of visual behaviours. Many invertebrates have exquisite sensitivity to light, can distinguish a broad spectrum of colours, detect subtle polarised light cues, and negotiate obstacles at high speed. The basic principles used to acquire and process such visual information are remarkably similar across the animal kingdom. In invertebrates, these principles frequently involve neural tricks and short cuts, some of which have been successfully exploited to create artificial visual systems for robots. Invertebrate Vision is a complete synthesis of our current knowledge concerning how invertebrates see, the principles used to process visual information and how vision is used in the daily struggle for survival. It will appeal to anyone interested in the vision sciences.

    Book Description

In this companion volume to Warrant: The Current Debate, Alvin Plantinga develops an original approach to the question of epistemic warrant; that is what turns true belief into knowledge. He argues that what is crucial to warrant is the proper functioning of one's cognitive faculties in the right kind of cognitive environment. Although this book is in some sense a sequel to its companion volume, the arguments do not presuppose those of the first book and it stands alone as a stimulating contribution to epistemology.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Watch a master philosopher DOING philosophy.......2006-04-11

Reading and rereading this book is a treat. Plantinga is not just giving you his conclusions. It is almost as if you are sitting with him while he is working through the issues at hand and explaining his reasoning to you. You read as he carefully considers evidence and counter-evidence. His tentative conclusions never seem to outstretch the evidence that he has marshaled thus far. The opportunity to observe one of the world's great living philosophers at work should not be missed.

This book is the second in a trilogy. In the first volume, Warrant: The Current Debate, Plantinga carefully dealt with current theories in epistemology, specifically with the concept that is commonly referred to in the literature as justification. He showed how the other theories, though valuable in furthering the debate, are still lacking in specific ways.

In this volume, Plantinga lays out his own theory. He shows how it relates to other theories, and how it better deals with (or fails to deal with) certain recurring epistemological problems. As a reader, I appreciate his sense of humor and most of all, his humility. He doesn't jump up and down, call you names, and try to convince you that he is right when he knows that problems still remain (Dennett and Dawkins could learn from this; doing so would enhance their credibility). He `fesses up to the problems that must still be overcome. In doing so, he is making a valuable contribution to a conversation that began with Plato in Theaetetus, and is setting the agenda for further research.

5 out of 5 stars Still The Correct Theory of Knowledge (More or Less).......2001-12-02

I don't claim that everything in this book is true (and didn't before), but I remain convinced that this is basically the right approach to knowledge. But since "cml" was content to say the same thing twice (presumably with a view to lowering this book's rating), so shall I be (with a view to raising it).

As to Benacerraf's problem: it's a little hard to see what your objection to Plantinga's solution is if you say nothing in response except that Plantinga's solution is unsatisfactory. Saying it twice--even with clumsy rhetorical flourishes--doesn't clarify the matter. Are you just congenitally anti-theistic, so that this dissatisfaction is a symptom of your personal religious hang-ups, or do you have a reason? If you have, it isn't too much to ask you to at least gesture at it, I should think.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting, but not entirely satisfying.......2001-03-06

In WPF, Plantinga tries to provide an account of warrant that is superior to rivals such as Goldman's process reliabilism. The work suffers from the following defects. First, he is too quick in dismissing rival accounts. Second, his arguments against evolutionary-naturalism will only convince those who already think that evolutionary naturalism is false. Third, while he is quick to dismiss rival views, his own positive answers to philosophical problems are entirely unsatisfactory. Consider his 'solution' to the Benacerraf problem. It seems that mathematical statements refer to abstract objects. It also seems that there must be a causal connection between our belief forming processes and the objects of belief if those beliefs are to be thought of as viable candidates for knowledge. Plantinga says that this is not a problem for the theist who is willing to say that mathematical principles are structures of the divine mind since surely the connection between God and God's subjects is not problematic. How one could think that Benacerraf's problem is a genuine one and that this is an adequate solution is beyond me. While his WCD is to be recommended to those wanting an introduction to epistemology, this book is of limited merit.

5 out of 5 stars The Correct Theory of Knowledge!.......2000-05-02

There are two epistemological works I think every philosopher should read. One is David Lewis' "Elusive Knowledge", which should be available in any good anthology of papers on the subject. The other is "Warrant and Proper Function". For what "Naming and Necessity" did for de re modality, "Warrant" will do for epistemology. If you give it a thorough, unbiased reading--that means you put out of your head all the warped notions we've inherited from Descartes, Hume, Kant, and the like--you will realize that this, or something like it, has got to be the correct approach to an account of knowledge. Among its many achievements, this superb book solves Gettier's problem, explains the difference between knowledge and true belief, distinguishes knowledge from justified true belief, solves the "problems" of the external world, other minds, and Cartesian skepticism generally, shows how we can know so much through the testimony of others, explains how to understand induction and the notion of evidence, and even takes a crack at analyzing epistemic probability. In addition to this, it explores the notion of proper function, itself of immense (and unappreciated) philosophical importance, and concludes with a delightful exposition of the self-imposed dialectical problems of evolutionary naturalism. What more can a philosopher ask for?

      Book Description

In his widely influential two-volume work, "Warrant: The Current Debate" and "Warrant and Proper Function", Alvin Plantinga argued that warrant is that which explains the difference between knowledge and true belief. Plantinga not only developed his own account of warrant but also mapped the terrain of epistemology. Motivated by Plantinga's work, fourteen prominent philosophers have written new essays investigating Plantingian warrant and its contribution to contemporary epistemology. The resulting collection, representing a broad array of views, not only gives readers a critical perspective on Plantinga's landmark work, but also provides in one volume a clear statement of the variety of approaches to the nature of warrant within contemporary epistemology, and to the connections between epistemology and metaphysics. Positions covered include internalism and externalism, reliabilism, coherentism and foundationalism, virtue theories, and defensibility theories. Alvin Plantinga responds to the essays in his own contribution.

Plenty has been written about Islamist terrorism, but these writings can't explain why other groups who have even more to complain about haven't developed such religiously-based terrorist ideologies. Warrant For Terror: The Fatwas Of Radical Islam And The Duty To Jihad narrows its focus to the fatwas, legal opinions declaring whether a given act under Islam is permitted, forbidden or obligatory. From how Islamic law operates to how it determines the duty to jihad, Warrant For Terror offers many insights.

5 out of 5 stars Reviews mentioned on book cover .......2006-06-18

The following are an abstract and some reviews on the book:
      Abstract
Since September 11, 2001 much has been written about "Islamist terrorism," arguing that it is a perversion that has "hijacked Islam" in the service of social, political and economic grievances. However, such accounts cannot explain why other people that can lay claim to similar or more serious grievances have not developed such devastating religious terrorist ideologies. Moreover, many of the terrorists themselves have attested to their own religious motivation and their belief that they acted in accordance with the precepts of Islam.
Warrant for Terror examines fatwas, which are legal opinions declaring whether a given act under Islam is obligatory, permitted or forbidden and which serve as a major instrument by which religious leaders impel believers to engage in acts of jihad. These fatwas come from all over the Muslim world, but mainly from the Arab world. And they should not be dismissed as a cynical use of religious terminology in political propaganda. Many terrorists testify that they were motivated to act by them. Indeed, this book shows that Islamic law plays a central role in determining for believers the practical meaning of the duty to jihad. It also examines the underlying religious, legal, and moral logic of these fatwas and the depth of their influence in contrast to alternative moderate Islamic interpretations. And the book explores the wide scope of issues that these fatwas deal with, covering almost all facets of Islamic "law of war:" the justification for declaring jihad; the territory in which the jihad should be fought; whether women and children may participate in jihad; the legality of killing women, children and other non-combatants; the justification for killing hostages and mutilating their bodies; and the permissibility of diverse tactics and weapons, including suicide attacks and even nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction. This book also delves into the contradictions between the radical and the mainstream narratives and the sources of the weakness of the latter in the face of the former. In the conclusion, the author raises a number of provocative questions relating to the "religious policy" of the West in the face of the threat of Islamic extremism.

      Reviews

"Non-Muslims rarely pay attention to the religious struggle within Islam. They must, urgently. Radical clerics, wielding the deadly accusation of apostacy, have silenced most mainstream Muslim clerics and regimes in the Muslim world on the issues of jihad and terrorism. We are at serious risk of having hundreds of millions of religiously-driven enemies and deferential followers."--R. James Woolsey, former Director of Central Intelligence

"Shmuel Bar has written one of the most important and compelling books in recent years. If you want to understand Islamic terrorism and jihad, this is the book to read. He has written an absolutely brilliant page-turning analysis of the dynamics underlying radical Jihad today--and for policymakers, analysts and the public, Warrant for Terror will provide you insights that few other books even dare try. This is one of the best books I have ever read on the dynamics of jihad and fatwas. Read it to be educated and to truly understand. Ignore it at your peril. Dr. Bar has performed a wonderful public service by compiling and analyzing the fatwas for us. This book is a bench mark in the literature on Jihad."--Steven Emerson, Executive Director, The Investigative Project on Terrorism, and author of American Jihad: The Terrorists Living Amongst Us.

"If you are sick of instant experts offering sound-bite style insight into the phenomenon of Radical Islam, then Warrant for Terror is the right medicine for you. Through an exhaustive yet refreshingly readable analysis of fatwas -- Muslim religious injunctions -- Shmuel Bar takes us deep into the minds of both those who issue calls for jihad and those who heed them. As a tool to understand the logic, the rationale, and the motivation of the enemy in the war on terror, this book is sure to be assigned in counter-terror training courses around the world. Thankfully, the rest of us can read it, too."--Robert Satloff, Executive Director, The Washington Institute for Near East Policy

"Drawing on Arabic sources not typically available to English readers, Shmuel Bar outlines the way that fatwas from Muslim religious authorities have in recent years laid a basis for jihadism and terror. Warrant for Terror is critical reading to understand the nature of the challenge posed by radical Islamism today."--Francis Fukuyama, Johns Hopkins University

5 out of 5 stars Excellent explanation of radical Islam.......2006-06-04

This is an excellent book for those wanting to understand Jihad and the justification for Jihad. How do Muslim terrorists justify killing innocent women and children? What are fatwas and why should we care?

Although somewhat scholarly, this book is readable and is perfect for those wanting to understand what motivates the evil doers.

5 out of 5 stars A good description of Islamic terrorism and jihad.......2006-06-01

Since this book attacks some truly counterproductive behavior on the part of a politically strong element of Islam, I think we need to put this in perspective. As a Pagan and a Zionist, I strongly oppose religious fanaticism and tyranny. Islamic fundamentalism is just one more in a long line of bad ideas. But I think we need to be careful not to regard Islam as special in this regard. There is indeed a genuine threat to human society right now which is Islamic in nature, and that threat ought not be overestimated, nor underestimated, nor otherwise improperly described. And I think this book is fair here.

It is true that people of other religions, even in recent times, have behaved very badly. One need only look at World War Two, or Rwanda for examples. In order to be intolerant, it is surely neither necessary nor sufficient to be a Muslim! Still, this short book deals, quite properly, with Islam. And it raises an immediate issue. Whether one is a Muslim or not, to what extent ought one tolerate intolerance? I do not have an answer for that question, but I strongly feel that in the long run, intolerance such as what we are seeing today is self-defeating. And at some point, it is best for everyone if it is opposed. Failure to oppose intolerance quickly turns into complicity with it, especially when silence often implies consent.

This book shows that radical Islam is not merely intolerant but is also engaged in a fight against much of the world. And that Islam itself is indeed a characterizing element of Islamic aggression and terror. As the author explains in his introduction, some folks insist on dismissing all threats from Islam, going so far as to label concerned people (including even concerned Muslims) as "Islamophobic" or "bigoted." I think this book shows these folks to be not only wrong but a part of the problem.

Is there a way to fight back against religious leaders who preach in favor of intolerance, aggression, and terror? The author says that there is. Such acts are criminal, and they can be outlawed, with consequences awaiting those who engage in them. Sooner or later, in my opinion, something of this sort will happen. Meanwhile, I think that the Muslim community has to figure out how to avoid constant and costly wars, both within the ummah and against, um, the giaours.

      I recommend this book.

      Book Description

She tried to tell her friends. She even went to the police. No one would believe her--and now she was dead.

Problems had always followed Susan White, but when she remarried and moved to Houston's posh suburbs, she thought the past was behind her--until she met a deputy sheriff named Kent McGowen who would soon become her worst nightmare.

McGowen was an aggressive cop with a spotty record. When Susan rebuffed his advances, she claimed he stalked and harassed her, using her troubled teenage son as bait. And then, in an act of arrogance and revenge, he made good on his threats, setting her up for the kill.

In A Warrant to Kill, Kathryn Casey meticulously pieces together the tragic shards of the case to create a riveting story of vengeance, fear, and justice--of the terrifying power a badge can have in the wrong hands.

5 out of 5 stars Casey Is a Great True Crime Writer.......2007-08-29

Though I am a veteran reader of true crime, I had not heard of Kathryn Casey until earlier this year when she was recommended by a friend.
A WARRANT TO KILL is the third, and the third outstanding, of her books that I've read. To briefly summarize, it is the story of a troubled woman, Susan White, killed by a likely-sociopathic rogue cop named Kent McGowen. As in her others I read earlier, SHE WANTED IT ALL and THE RAPIST'S WIFE, Casey's talent for true crime is remarkable. Her writing is crisp, reportorial, and to the point. As in the others, A WARRANT TO KILL contains none of the boring, superfluous filler found in lesser true crime. It contains none of the irritating drama, often used even by good writers, which can turn true crime into cloying true soap opera.

A WARRANT TO KILL shows in-depth research and interviewing and a sincere interest in writing an outstanding book. She also, importantly, knows when to leave out unnecessary or repetitive information, with the result that she avoids excessive length and boring repetition. An excellent example is the section of the book which deals with the trial. This is often a deadly dull part of a true crime book, but Casey keeps it moving and interesting by not including every bit of testimony, only that which is necessary to futher the story line. And, thankfully, she does not feel the need to include every bit of forensic testimony.

Finally, Casey, as in all of her books I've read, does a masterful job of presenting the details of the personalities and psyches of the principals in the case. This, in my opinion, is the single most important element in great true crime. And Kathryn Casey writes great true crime. Fans of the genre will love this book.

5 out of 5 stars Readable True Crime Story.......2007-07-18

I have enjoyed all of Ann Rule's books, and find this author to be almost as good. This true story is even more gripping than fiction.

      5 out of 5 stars Very detailed.......2007-04-24

This is the first true crime book I have read and it was only because I saw the story on A&E and was intrigued to learn more. It was very detailed and while I can't say I enjoyed it (murder is nothing to be happy about) it really shocked me at how much harm a man with a badge can do. Susan White had her issues but she didn't deserve to be harassed and then be killed by someone who is supposed to serve and protect. Anyhow, while I truly found this intriguing, I don't know that I will read anymore true crime simply because I love happy endings and these for the most part don't end that way. I will stick to fiction.

5 out of 5 stars Bad Cop, Great Writer.......2007-01-29

Kathryn Casey takes us into the bowels of the Houston police department and shows us a man that NEVER should have been in law enforcement. What a sad story of a flawed woman and the police officer who ended her life. This book was masterfully researched and written, as are all of KC's books. The more I read this writer, the better I like her work. I have pre-ordered her next book.

4 out of 5 stars Can you say bad cop??.......2007-01-16

I read this a few year's ago and it was amazing that this cop could think he could do what he wanted and believe he was above the law himself. Thank goodness that we don't have that many bad cops in our system. I hope!!

        Book Description

This is the official history of an extraordinary institution—the Royal Warrant. Most of us are aware of the Royal Coats of Arms, which appear on everything from pots of marmalade to the shop fronts of fashionable west end stores. These are the outward signs that whoever displays them is "By Appointment" to the Queen, Prince Philip, the Queen Mother, or Prince Charles. There are some terrific individuals—Reginald de Thunderleigh in 1300; Dr. Schweppe, the 18th century mineral water man; and Mr. Crapper who did Royal WCs. For the book, the author has had access to the archives in London and Windsor Castle, and talked to the Keeper of the Privy Purse, the Master of the Royal Household, and such household names as Mr. Twining of Twinings tea.

          Book Description

Hitler's anti-semitic obsession stems from his fascination with an enormously influential literary forgery, the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. Warrant for Genocide sets the story of the Protocols within the broader context of the history of anti-semitism-a key book for understanding the murderous folly of the twentieth century.

4 out of 5 stars Encyclopedic, almost too much so.......2005-04-23

This book offers an incredible window into the history of the most infamous piece of antisemitic propaganda set to paper. The survey goes from their origin to the sixties. Cohn breaks this up into sections organized chronologically and geographically. At times one can get very bogged down in the mass of information and keeping names straight can be a huge headache. I had problems with it at times despite having a general knowledge of the history, so be forewarned if you don't have background knowledge you might have a lot of trouble. The mass of information is incredibly useful, the absorption of it was certainly the major difficulty for me. The appendices at the end were somewhat helpful for adding a perspective to what is contained in the book.

All in all this book is very informative but I think its weakness is in getting slogged down in details which, though necessary, could be presented in a more readable way.

3 out of 5 stars journalistic and limited, but useful.......2003-09-08

In spite of the claims on the back cover, this is anything but a scholarly study. It is journalistic in manner and nature, tending to the sensational, relying on secondary sources; it can be accused of bias, especially towards the Catholic Church, and its view of the social reasons for the rise of Nazism in Germany are mechanical, unperceptive and unexplaining (so the lower bourgoisie was being squeezed to death by big business - was that happening in Germany alone?). Cohn gleefully notices that two successive Popes honoured an elderly French churchman guilty of anti-Semitic scribblings with the title of Protonatary Apostolic, but does not tell us - or perhaps he does not know - why this honorary title was awarded, and how much of politicking and Buggins' Turn there is about these appointments. Nor does he say anything about the increasingly determined stand of Pius XI, who opposed Nazism and squashed Action Francaise: if one were to judge by this book, this firm and obstinately independent Pope could be taken to be a sort of useful idiot for Mussolini and Hitler. My interest in the Catholic Church, to which Cohn is moderately but unmistakably hostile, certainly colours my views; but it is not the only way in which Cohn tends to misrepresent the facts, always in the direction of excessive simplicity. To give one instance, he says that the Nazi murder squads "went blithely about their business" with no evidence of any revulsion; in point of fact, there is plenty of evidence that instinctive, physical revulsion had to be suppressed again and again. According to Trevor-Roper, the horrors of the cattle trucks drove their attendants mad; and I read that the soldiers' toilets in concentration camps had grabbing bars for any soldier who, overcome by the horror of his duties, should need to vomit.
There is no denying Cohn's basically journalistic attitude. Not that there is anything wrong with being journalistic, so long as it is not taken for anything more profound. This is not one of the great studies of Nazism; it will not give you the nuanced and profound insights of Kershaw, Fest or Bullock, the detail and personal view of Shirer, or the literary magnificence of Trevor-Roper. It is perfectly serviceable for what it is, an account of a peculiarly successful forgery that played an important part in the successive bouts of anti-Semitism that convulsed the lunatic fringe in recent European history, and that once, in 1933, got lucky in Germany.
An underlying problem must be pointed out: Cohn's language, if not everything he says, often seems to imply that the PROTOCOLS OF THE ELDERS OF ZION were themselves a force in what happened, rathern than a symptom; he often almost speaks as though they were a positive agent in the spread of anti-Semitism, almost like a bacillus that works by infection. No, obviously; if the people who read this trash had not been willing to hate in the first place - if they had not sought a target for their own need to justify their own failings - the PROTOCOLS would have had no effect, as indeed they did not have any on the vast majority of sane mankind.

5 out of 5 stars The History of "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion"........2003-01-10

_Warrant for Genocide_ by Norman Cohn provides the reader with an excellent history of the notorious forgery "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion", the myth of the Jewish world conspiracy, and a general history of some of the antiSemitic movements. Ever popular among occultists, antiSemites, fringe politicals, NeoNazis, and conspiracy theorists, the infamous "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" have an intriguing history. Norman Cohn begins by tracing the idea of Jewish world conspiracy to early nominally Christian apocalyptic movements. To the orthodox Christian, apocalypticism represents a heretical movement which seeks to give rise to the Kingdom of God on Earth. During the French Revolution, rumors abounded concerning mysterious groups of "Illuminati" initiates and Freemasonic cults. The French Jesuit, Abbe Barruel, wrote about his experiences with the Illuminati, and the Freemasonic lodges were blame for the terror of the French Revolution. Basing their philosophy on Enlightenment principles and rejecting the authority of tradition, the monarchy, and the Catholic Church, the Freemasons and the Illuminati were notorious for their role in instigating subversion. It was against this background of paranoia that various antiSemitic pamphlets began to circulate many of which attempted to link the Jews with the Freemasons in a plot for world conquest. For instance, mysterious letters from various rabbis were produced which claimed that the Jews should infiltrate Christian European society so as to further their own schemes for world domination. Traditionally seen as an agent of Satan, the Jews were an easy target for various antiSemitic European individuals who often concocted such "letters" as a joke. It was amidst this environment of antiSemitism and hostility towards Jews and Freemasons that the "Protocols" document was forged. Between 1903 and 1907, the "Protocols" document circulated among the Russian intelligentsia and among the Russian press. In his book _The Great in the Small, the occultist Sergey Nilus provided his theories on the Jewish conspiracy and the imminent arrival of Antichrist as well as including a copy of the "Protocols". Norman Cohn explains how the "Protocols" document is a historical forgery which may have been based on the text of _Dialogue aux Enfers entre Montesquieu et Machiavel_ by the French lawyer Maurice Joli. The "Protocols" basically outline a plan for Jewish infiltration of Christian society and eventual take-over based upon the philosophy that "Might is Right". Cohn then proceeds to outline how the Russian tsarist secret police, the Okrhana, developed an interest in the "Protocols" and explains the rise of a pre-fascist movement, the Black Hundreds, in Russia. Interestingly, the swastika symbol was used among initiates in the Black Hundreds movement as a symbol of opposition to Jews. When the Tsar and Tsaritsa were found dead, a copy of the book _The Great in the Small_ and a drawing of the swastika symbol was found among the Tsaritsa's personal effects. Instances such as these led to many populist uprisings. In the showdown between the Russian "Whites" (loyalists to the tsar and the empire) and the Bolsheviks in the Russian revolution, the "Protocols" played an important role among the reactionary Whites. Cohn then proceeds to show how the "Protocols" reached Germany and eventually made their way around the world. Propagated by such individuals as Alfred Rosenberg, the Nazi theorist and writer of the book _The Myth of the Twentieth Century_, during the Nazi era, the "Protocols" played an important part in the ideology of the Nazis and were used by Hitler in his schemes for constructing the Third Reich. Other individuals associated with the "Protocols" or antiSemitism including the American industrialist Henry Ford, who wrote the notorious book popular among Nazis _The International Jew_ (although he later would repent of his antiSemitism), and the Depression era Catholic priest Father Charles Coughlin. Norman Cohn's book provides an interesting history of the various subversive movements which used the "Protocols" to further their own brand of hatred. Also, the book is interesting for its understanding of the phenomenon of antiSemitism. Norman Cohn includes a chapter in which he analyzes the role of paranoia and antiSemitism in the mental instabilities of different individuals and entire cultures. Antisemitism may indeed be a form of psychological aberration. In today's world, the "Protocols" have again by ressurrected by different occult and conspiracy groups as well as NeoNazis and Islamic extremists seeking to justify their terroristic activities. Whatever the "Protocols" may indicate about the nature of the human animal, it is most likely something very sinister and disturbing. This is a good book which might provide an understanding and a bridge towards development away from antiSemitism.

"Warrant For Genocide" declares that, whilst only about one third of all civilians killed by the Nazis were Jews, it was the Jewish people that were uniquely marked out for extermination.

It further declares that the Jewish people were not just simply killed or worked to death, but were sought out, humiliated, hunted, persecuted and tortured with an intensity of hatred uniquely reserved for them alone.

This even though the Jews as a people did not constitute a belligerent nation, or even a nation at all, but lived scattered in their own communities throughout Europe, yet suffered a hatred beyond any scope of normality and totally disproportionate to their number or any perceived threat.

This book investigates some issues which might serve to explain some of that hatred. A hatred that unfortunately still exists to this day. A hatred that not only still affects the Jews that still reside in European or international communities, but also those Jews who now live in their own homeland of Israel. A hatred that is perhaps now more prevalent than at any time since the aforementioned Nazi regimes that murdered so many.

The author here examines the myth of Jewish world conspiracy and the notorious forgery known as the `Protocols of the Elders of Zion' and the effects of these myths upon society, public opinion, anti-Semitism and pertaining to the Holocaust itself.

At the Berne trial in 1935, being shown as a proven hoax, the "Protocols" still sold 120,000 copies in Germany in the period of just one year. With some 17 million Germans casting their votes to the Nazis in 1933, the author shows how the absurd myth of a Jewish conspiracy combined with a prevalent racist ideology did much to produce the Holocaust.

The author points out that these abhorrent myths have not died out and their resultant hatreds still raise their ugly heads. Even today, some areas of the Middle East grant official state approved media publication to these same issues that have caused so much animosity and bloodshed.

Highly recommended read to assess the impact of these myths, their historical and present perspectives and anti-Semitism as an issue in it's own right.

The New York Times of October 26, 2002 tells us, in a front-page story, that "Anti-Semitic 'Elders of Zion' Gets New Life on Egypt TV." So now, almost 60 years after the downfall of Hitler, his favorite book and his favorite mania are once more resurrected. What to do ? The first thing surely is to consult the most scholarly study of the topic, by a namesake of mine (but no relative). I first purchased this volume in a Pelican edition back in 1976. Since then I have read much on the notorious "Protocols," but nothing else can compare to this outstanding treatment by one of the great historians on the 20th century.
