5 out of 5 stars Advice for the Architect.......2007-04-23

The authors know what an architect needs to consider when designing and implementing a BizTalk 2006 solution. They wrote a readable, compact book packed with their wisdom. Not surprisingly, it does not cover every (most?) BizTalk feature.

My only beef with the book is the code - all VB.NET. ;-)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference.......2007-03-10

This book expands on the introduction to orchestrations and other key BizTalk components given in the Foundations book. Personally I think that this combined with the Foundations book sets you up nicely to start doing some serious BizTalk work.

5 out of 5 stars Pro BizTalk 2006 for the Novice and Expert.......2007-02-27

Every so often a book comes along which transcends the technology that it is intended to explain. If you are a BizTalk novice, this seminal work is for you. With a self-deprecating style, the authors guide you through the wide and deep integration waters. They tell you just enough so that you can be proficient and yet feel comfortable that you have chosen the correct course. What you might not know is that the authors are building a framework for you to develop the best solutions going forward. For the expert, the authors have redefined what it means to orchestrate the integration space and to use a product to its maximum utility and purpose. I support both small and enterprise BizTalk customers every day. I can't recommend this book enough!

4 out of 5 stars A Beacon in a storm.......2007-01-09

With BizTalk2006 fairly fresh on the market there is not a lot of documentation out there, along with me being so new to BizTalk itself, this book is a great resource. Everything from the administration side of things to development. My seminar instructor also agreed. I strongly recommend this book for those getting into BizTalk2006.

5 out of 5 stars The book every serious BizTalk developer must own.......2006-11-16

This book is an in-depth look into the BizTalk Server 2006 product. Although I use the product since years (back to BizTalk 2004), I realized that I still had things to learn from it, thanks to this book

3 out of 5 stars Good how-to reference, BAM and BRE can be addressed more.......2007-02-18

Though this book covers basics, it is a good reference book to learn what some of the real world scenarios are and how to solve them.

However, if you assume this a 1-2-3 type "recipes", you may find challenges in following the instructions. To name a few, just try out Recipe 5-2 from the Sample Chapter of this book, I wonder how many people can get it working. You will also need good enough of background to jump right into some topics such as BRE and BAM, or you will be left with a lot of "Why" and "How" while reading some talk-through descriptions (Yes, you are reading right, not step 1-2-3 at all). "Related Activities" in Recipe 9-1 is one of many examples.

You may be questioning yourself and try to look for sample codes/project download from the publisher Apress official site. You will be very disappointed how many key subjects out there. This may be the nature of the BizTalk implementation, unlike other subjects such as C# coding sample which author can just zip and ship the sample codes out for download.

Overall, this book is fine. To me, it seems this book came out rush. More proof-reading can make this book better.

5 out of 5 stars Well balanced, provides insight in how things work.......2007-01-10

BizTalk 2006 Recipes is a refreshing book. Rather than re-organize the existing help, they have taken the time to address dozens and dozens of common scenarios and provided "recipes" for each of these.
This is information that you don't find in the help. Just like a cookbook, appetizers, breads, drinks, poultry, salads, etc., BizTalk 2006 Recipes uses the same paradigm, Schemas, Mapping, Messaging, Orchestrations, etc. For each "recipe," you have the problem you are trying to solve, the solution for the problem, and then best part, "How it Works," which explains the underpinnings of each of the topics. They pick both simple and advanced topics and it is structured to allow you to either go through the book end-to-end or to use it as a reference. I think this is a great compliment to the existing documentation and a handy reference for any BizTalk developer.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not complete.......2006-10-24

I find that the examples given in this book cover the basics well. There is nothing about the EDI subsystem or the Sharepoint Adapter.

5 out of 5 stars Great for reference, great for learning BizTalk.......2006-10-05

This is a piece of the review I wrote on my blog (putting the URL would be against the policies here so I'm leaving it out).

The book format: It is a recipe book so is written in a "Problem, Solution, How it works" style format with each chapter being given an introductory page or two preface. This book will be a great one to have around as a reference book, but I have to say that I also enjoyed reading it cover to cover (well almost... honestly I skimmed chapter 10, this chapter probably could have been done away with and the contents moved to other chapters).

The book is fairly comprehensive in covering BizTalk soup to nuts; there is a chapter on Schemas, one on Business Rules engine (more on this one later in the post), one on BAM and one talking about HAT. The writing styles of the various authors were not too apparent, but rather fairly subtle; sometimes in code samples they were apparent however; one chapter has code that uses both hungarian notation on variables, but also on function parameters. That should be done away with in this persnickety developers opinion. I have to say that from still fairly green knowledge of BizTalk, it appears that at least some of the authors have implemented a fair amount of BT solutions in their careers; to me this was evidenced by the "NOTE" sections that were lusciously littered throughout the text that included well thought out pitfulls and other tips to assist in your BizTalk solutions. In my opinion the one chapter that stuck out (and obviously I could be wrong) as one that wasn't written from experience but rather written from a "I just learned this" kind of perspective was the business rules engine chapter 5 (which ironically is available for free download from Apress).

Overall, I would give this book 3 tivo thumbs up, 4.5 stars out of 5 rating. Get this book if you need assistance with BizTalk 2006.

Other side notes, the authors created a blog site just for the book, but thus far only posted one comment and apparently aren't interested in doing much blogging, I'd love to see that change.

One other note I forgot to include; there was a couple spots that made reference to BizTalk 2004; one of the spots was more of a "if you are used to doing it this way, here is what you will have to do now" kind of reference; I found that appropriate; the other one was "here is how to do it in 2004 and here is how to do it in 2006". That one the book could do without. I don't recall where in the book they were; but for the authors knowledge it was the first 2004 reference in the book that could go and the 2nd one could stay :) I gave them the full 5 stars since they are first to market; I think 4.5 stars would be an appropriate rating on this book. Great job to the authors!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!!!!.......2006-09-28

This is an excellent book for Biztalk, Only suggestion is read the Biztalk 2006 white paper from the Microsoft website before you read this book. The authors have presented the content in a very easy to understand manner, without beating around the bush.........

5 out of 5 stars Love it!!!.......2007-09-12

First Day and I read 9 chapters. Looks like will be done with the book tomorrow. This is my first time hands on on Biztalk even though I have read some white papers before but this book rocks!. Samples are easy to understand and implement and very well chosen so you start to get the hang of biztalk.

This is great addition on my shelf and highly recommend to the ones who are venturing into biztalk for first time.

5 out of 5 stars Great intro to BizTalk 2006 if you are a newbie.......2007-07-13

Got the book on Monday and was able to read through it and work with the examples and finished the book by Friday (had some down time at work). I had never worked with BizTalk before so this book was very helpful in getting points accross and examples were mostly spot on.

Author had a very easy going writing skills with little humor and did not bore me with lot of technical jargons. Liked the way the book was organized.

I wish there was a chapter on how to debug and monitor your Orchestrations using BizTalk Health and Activity Tracker tool. That would have come in handy when I goofed some of the examples. But I found out about Orchestration debugging from blogs and Microsoft site and was able to work through the examples.

Like other reviewers had mentioned this book is very elementary and will get your feet barely wet with BizTalk. You need to buy an advanced book to compliment this one. I myself have bought the Pro BizTalk 2006 from apress.

If you have already worked with BizTalk before then you may find this book of no use to you. Neverthless a good start and kudos to the author on a job well done.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent start to BizTalk.......2007-07-07

When I was between projects I attented a BizTalk 2006 deep dive (a week long) training session. The training session was for intermediate to advanced users. I had no experience with BizTalk. Before the class I got this book on the weekend and did all the exercises in the book. 2 days were enough to go through this book and it gave me a solid understanding of BizTalk. The training session made so much sense to me because I read this book. Had I not read this book I would have not understood any of the training that assumed that everybody in the class know orchestrations well.
I highly recommend this as the first BizTalk book. This book will make you ready for the advanced level books.

5 out of 5 stars Great Introduction - BizTalk 2006..........2007-06-28

GREAT introduction to the server. Lots of hands on practice exercises which actually work.
If you're a newbie (or even intermediate) to the BizTalk 2006, definitely consider this book.
The author of this book puts the software into its proper context, provides a solid introduction to its architecture,
and gives more than enough "how-to" to get started.

5 out of 5 stars Great overview to get you going quickly..........2007-06-24

I just bought this book 2 days ago and I am already 2/3rds of the way through it. It's very small (about 200 pages), but plenty big enough to get you started on BTS2k6. I would characterize it as a book for BizTalk Neewbies, which is what I am, and a nice precursor for some of the "Pro"-level books.

Thanks Daniel for putting in the time to write the book.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars What developers need to know.......2007-10-22

Great book for all who want to know HOW BT really works and WHY it works like that. Very valuable purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book.......2007-09-09

It took a long time for decent BizTalk Server books to start appearing, and those of us who have been committed to the product for some time know the pain (and fun) of having to work out, for ourselves, how this product works, how best to apply it to real-life scenarios and how to exploit its rich functionality.

I was really impressed with this book. It has two characteristics which I think are particularly noteworthy. The first is that it offers a huge breadth of coverage, but also manages to combine this with reasonable depth. This is hard to achieve when writing about BizTalk Server because it is such a rich an extensive product. The second characteristic is that it reads like a book written by practitioners - people with real-life experience of using the product, and the scars to prove it. Indeed, that it very much the case, and it means that the book provides far more than just rehashed information. It provides guidance, advice and best practice which is rooted in reality.

I like to think I know a thing or two about BizTalk Server (though it still manages to spring surprises on me quite regularly). I am not greatly addicted to computer books, because so many fail to be of any very practical use. However, I can report that this is the first BizTalk book (and one of very few books, generally) that I've carried with me into engagements to use as a reference. Warmly commended and highly recommended, especially for those who have done enough with BizTalk Server to realise the extent of the mountain they must climb.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Intermediates and Beyond.......2007-07-13

I've been on a couple of BizTalk projects, all of them for Fortune 50 clients. We did a lot of things wrong, hence a lot of lessons learned. This book is good...REALLY good. How good? Well, let's just say that I never, repeat NEVER write book reviews, even if a book was the greatest thing since the bread slicer. (I guess because I'm too busy building Orchestrations and Custom Pipeline Components.) That alone should convince you that this book is a must-have for anyone wanting to know anything about BizTalk.

DISCLAIMER: Allow me to contradict that last statement... This isn't for everyone, however. It is really in-depth and explains more than the minimum required. The book also targets those of use that continue to ask the question "Why?" and it quenches our curious thirst. If I were to pick this book up when I was first learning BizTalk, I would throw it down and stomp on it. But now that I've been around the block a few times and I know the difference between a best practice and a "you're on your own" practice, I am able to get a lot from reading this material.

With BizTalk, there's so many ways to skin the proverbial cat. This books explains all of them (from what I've read), but then it points out the preferred approaches that one should take when implementing an integration solution via BizTalk Server...lots of Notes & Caveats sections, things that I crave.

This book will give you very objective insights into BizTalk. And you don't need to worry about reading it with your rose-colored glasses, either. It's neither half-empty nor half-full, it just is, you know?

5 out of 5 stars Absolute must have book.......2007-06-06

This book has information in it that you simply will not find anywhere else. Its written by people who have worked with the product on some of the largest and most important projects where BizTalk has been the platform of choice, and the knowledge that thay pass on is exceptional.

5 out of 5 stars If you are serious about BizTalk then this book is a must have.......2007-05-21

I have been working with BizTalk Server through versions 2002, 2004 & 2006 and have at times struggled with getting information related to the enterprise application of the product; this book finally meets all those needs. It is for anyone who is or wants to work with BizTalk Server and covers everything you need to know about the serious application of BizTalk in critical systems.

From the information about the authors they have a extensive knowledge of "real world" enterprise applications of the product and this shows in the content of the chapters. The book is well structured and laid out; covering things including performance testing, unit testing, administration, low latency, best practices and goes well beyond the basic BizTalk development. I have most of the BizTalk books out there, this is the one I will turn to first!

A must have, the only regret that I have is that it wasn't published a year or two ago!

Book Description

In this era of globalization, outsourcing has emerged as a key strategy not only for achieving competitive advantage but also for survival. However, despite widespread adoption, there are few practical guidelines in the market regarding how to optimally manage outsourced projects. Global Outsourcing with Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team System teaches managers, developers, and SQA professionals how to successfully execute outsourced projects. Providing best practices guidelines based upon empirical experience of leading practitioners in the outsourcing industry, the book shows how to construct result-oriented development processes for mitigating execution risk, improving quality, and increasing efficiency. Using Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team System as the underlying infrastructure, the book teaches how to customize development methodologies, integrate with MS Project and MS Outlook, embed real-time communication capabilities, manage source code and build process, run unit tests, create custom reports, and leverage the project portal. Global Outsourcing with Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team System is an essential IT reference for companies interested in effectively managing outsourced projects and reducing friction associated with globally distributed software development.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guidance for outsourcing/distributed environment.......2007-06-05

Note: This review gives more importance to the processes than the other obvious benefits.

Who should read this book?
- On-site coordinators
- Off-shore managers
- Process managers/Product Managers
- Key people involved in distributed development/outsourcing.

Why this book is useful?
- This book can be used as a process guidance for outsourcing/distributed environment.
- This book clearly identifies the day to day issues of a distributed development environment and gives options on how to mitigate the risks.
- Explains all the possible options on how efficiently VSTS can be used.
- This is very useful not only for the teams using VSTS 2005, but also for any distributed development team as this clearly gives an idea of what processes should be in place. VSTS is an all-in-one tool which helps in making the life easier.
- For companies which do not prefer to use VSTS can also leverage from the processes clearly mentioned in the book and can achieve similar efficiency by using different free tools available in the market.
- The book has shown how to customize the VSTS to suit the specific need along with the code which is very handy and reduces a lot of effort in customizing.
- More importantly, this book is very handy and easily understood by techies and non-techies alike. Non-techies can understand the processes without getting into any technical details.
- Addresses the issues faced by bigger and smaller companies and bigger or smaller teams.

5 out of 5 stars A fine technical overview programmers will relish........2006-11-05

Jamil Azher's GLOBAL OUTSOURCING WITH MICROSOFT VISUAL STUDIO 2005 TEAM SYSTEM tells how to manage outsourced projects using Visual Studio 2005, which engages developers, project managers and team leads alike. GLOBAL OUTSOURCING takes it examples from the real world also: it examines typical outsource management issues, applications, and problem-solving in a fine technical overview programmers will relish.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2006-08-30

Global Outsourcing with Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team System is an excellent book and informational resource. The format is easy to follow, intuitive, and simplifies gaining an understanding of both the concept of global outsourcing as well as the software.

5 out of 5 stars A Software Assist to Communications........2006-08-23

This book is indeed about global outsourcing, but it deals with the outsourcing of software not athletic shoes or kitchen ware. Specifically, as you might guess from the title, it concentrates on the use of Microsoft's Team System version of Visual Studio 2005. Other Microsoft products such as Project and Excel from the Office suite are also shown as a part of an integrated management system.

There is little question tht outsourcing is here to stay. The cost savings are simply to great to be ignored. A programmer with a few years of experience in the US is paid an average of $55K, in India $15K, and in China $9K.

There is also no question that outsourcing brings its own problems in terms of management, control and especially communications. Many of these problems are specifically discussed in the book, and it goes on to show that the Microsoft tools can assist in these areas. The tools will not, of course, guarantee success but they may help to make a project a success.

You'll get much better luck and practice with the online free material than this book

2 out of 5 stars SSDD - Much like it's predecessor (Site Server).......2005-09-21

Like Site Server - you won't find a ton of material that is actually useful about this technology.

as well as other online resources.

Sorry, guy. We want to give you a big pat on the back, but that's kind of improbable under the current book conditions. This has been a current problem since back in the day when Site Server first pushed into the marketplace (if you will recall that mess, and that BizTalk's features used to be part of the pipeline configurator mechanism for extending SS-EC to full EC-functionality).

Give it another try. Still, something is better than nothing, but in terms of spending personal money, I'll pass.

4 out of 5 stars The Only Book Availalbe for BizTalk 2004.......2005-08-30

I understand the frastrations of the other reviewers towards this book. BizTalk 2004 is quite different from the earlier versions. BizTalk 2004 is not well documented and there is no other reference book available. Many of us waited anxiously for the arrival of this book and hoped it would biring us extensive and in-depth coverage beyond what was available online, in particular since one of the authors is Scott Woodgate, the product manager of BizTalk, wellknown in BizTalk community.

To be fair, I believe this book desearves more than the current 2-star rating of average customer review. The authors promised "complete coverage" and they did a reasonable job to cover this product. If you are new to BizTalk, you have not choice. You should read this book since it is an authorative introduction.

Scott, I give you 4-star rating to encourage you to provide more in-depth material online at your blog site or in another book.

1 out of 5 stars shoddy and replete with errors of ommission and commission.......2005-07-20

The least the authors can do is review their own work and provide their readers with an errata or a list of corrections for the numerous errors in the book.

I would love to get my money back. Reselling it in the used-book market would be a disservice to the buyers.

2 out of 5 stars Not good enough, Microsoft!.......2005-07-20

With so many errors, I wonder if the authors have even bothered to read through the book after writing it.
They even change the project and solution names during some of the examples.
Maybe that's not a big deal after all, but it's very annoying.

Book Description

First Steps: Developing BizTalk Applications is a primer to most other introductory BizTalk books. If you feel like traditional beginning books are too abstract, and that you are mired in detail and missing the “big picture,” check out this book. It's not a reference -- it's a jumpstart to learning BizTalk. You learn about the product in a phased approach. This way, you learn just what you need to know, when you need to know it. And the entire book is example-based: you learn by doing. Each phase provides detailed instructions for creating, deploying, and testing a BizTalk project. Through the book's projects, you will be exposed to orchestrations, pipelines, maps, schemas, messages, ports, shapes, the BizTalk Server Administration console, and the Health and Activity Tracking (HAT) tool.

To quickly get ahead and quick-start your BizTalk learning process, this book is for you.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent BizTalk book.......2002-11-21

As a developer, I bought BizTalk Unleashed to evaluate the capabilities of BizTalk Server 2002. Specifically, I looked at how it can be used in EDI transaction processing and how to use .NET (VB.NET/C#) and I was impressed because the book has excellent examples, from general overview to step-by-step guide, on how to use every tools and technologies that BizTalk has to offer. Most importantly, the examples on how to use .NET (VB.Net/C#/) in developing COM+/COM/Web Sevices is very valuable. Not only they are valuable, all the examples I tried just worked which in itself saved me from frustrations!

I must say that with this book, I clearly discovered many great capabilities of BizTalk and I am confident that I can accomplish anything that involves BizTalk using BizTalk Unleashed!

By the way, the review just reflects my satisfaction of the book.

4 out of 5 stars Intermediate Biztalk without Proofreading.......2002-05-02

The substance of this book is very good, if too wordy. There is no doubt that the authors have a firm grasp of their subject; now they just need to be concise in discussing it. As stated in the book, the book is designed for readers who have a basic familiarity with BizTalk -- however note that readers are expected to be familiar with MS operating systems and some scripting and programming languages. Not having this knowledge will make this book difficult to follow, especially in the examples.

Since the advent of the spell checker, no one proofreads any more. The book is rampant with errors. For example, the text will state that five parameters are required, then list six. In one case the publishing tool boldly inserts "ERROR! Reference source not found" when the text references a figure... Still, I'll give it high recommendations for content.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars this book changed my life.......2005-03-29

This book was awesome. It was a perfect intro to Biztalk in the Healthcare space. It dealt with common HC industry problems well, and offered clear and useful solutions using Biztalk.

Thank you, Jim Casey, for making my life easier.

5 out of 5 stars At the Right Level for Me.......2005-03-11

This book has an interresting positioning philosophy. It is too technical for the president or board of directors. It is too simplified for the systems analyst who will be implementing a system. For someone inbetween these positions, this is an excellent book.

If you go try to learn about BizTalk at the Microsoft web site it sends you to page after page, written at the two extremes given above. At the teckie level you can download the package and go into it as deeply as you wish. At the high level the discussion is so high that it is almost meaningless, an example: "In today's global economy, companies need to integrate applications, systems, and technologies from a variety of sources." OK, so what?

In this book the authors have presented the BizTalk system with the two specialized packages (Accelerators, whatever those are) that are aimed at the health care marketplace. There's a fairly clear description of what we are trying to do with this software, a bunch of diagrams showing what data goes where, and discussion of what you can do, with a minimal amount of how to do it.

This is a small enough book that you can read it fairly quickly and come away with a fair understanding of the Microsoft philosophy of meeting the HIPAA and HL7 standards.

1 out of 5 stars Use the HL7 / HIPAA online help instead.......2005-02-07

The 250 pages of the book dedicate very little to healthcare solutions in integration problems using BizTalk 2004. Only chapter 8 and 9 are used for this to cover HL7 and HIPAA respectively. And that goes no further (even less) than what can be read from the BizTalk Accelerator products online help.
In the earlier chapters the authors outline the challenges of integration on a superficial level. If you know about it, it is useless, if you don't you won't get much wiser. The same is true for BizTalk itself. It touches a few things but never enough to get you started if you didn't know how to do it already in the first place. For novices you need the BizTalk tutorials or get Scott Woodgate's "BizTalk 2004 Unleased" to understand the BTS2004 architecture and artifacts and how to use them.

The book should have covered practical use of the BizTalk Accelerators and how to make the most of them or circumvent some of their limitations by customizing them. For example, how to modify HL7 schemas to your specification given the rather odd way the Accelerator builds up these schemas from three other parts. It should tell you how to cope with the ways some hospital (mis)use HL7 messages - like adding their own Z-segments, adding more separators than there are fields, how to route on only MSH header fields, ignoring whatever the message body contains (I know - some hospitals work like that!). How to make the very American HL7 messages fit local (german, dutch, french...) versions. How to have application acknowledgement between sender to receiver (works only after a BTAHL7 hotfix). How to use custom pipelines for specific HL7 situations rather than stating it can be done.

It does none of this. It tells in fact nothing new. If you know BizTalk, you can read the accelerator help file and do the tutorials that come with it and you know more than the book will tell you. If you know nothing then this book will not help either. It doesn't even manage to make a proper explanation of a port and its location/pipeline/map components.

The two blurb recommendations of two Microsoft managers on the backcover can only be interpreted as marketing blurb. I doubt they read the book.

Also the book is badly published. Pictures have been copied from the online help or presentations which are in colour. The book is in black and white, resulting in some diagram blocks that are black with black captions. How am I to read that?

There should be a money back policy on this book as this is a total waste of money.

1 out of 5 stars Who needs such a book.......2005-02-01

The first and foremost thing which causes frustration is that a book as big as 700 pages (BizTalk Unleashed) and covers a lot of topics is same as 200 page book (this) with even fewer details when we compare the price. If we were to assume that BizTalk Unleashed is worth (I know for sure this book is not worth what I paid) for what it is then this book is not even worth a couple of dollars.

First let me start with the contents of the book. This book explains fundamental challenges of Health care industry. Nothing new in here. Anyone with common sense/knowledge can see the problems. Next it explains Biztalk 2004 in as few words as possible. Then comes HL7 followed by HIPAA. These two topics are the primary reason why I bought this book and this section is covered in no more than 70 pages with a huge font, few lines and a lot of pictures. IMHO just a few key strokes in Google can get you all the information present in this section (Contact me if you are unsuccessful, I can help you with it if you want to). Also, there are a couple of EDI examples on Scott's blog. I thought for a while and came to a conclusion that I (technical background) might not be the intended reader for this book. Then who could be it? Managers? How can they become managers if they don't have the slightest knowledge of HL7 and HIPAA. So, I don't have a clue as of now the intended readers for this book. May be this is intended as a marketing tool for Biztalk 2004 and accelerators (HL7 & HIPAA)

Conclusion: Basics of BizTalk 2004, HL7 and HIPAA are covered. IMHO anyone without these basics should not work on integration project. I am completely disappointed with the content of this book. I don't recommend this book to anyone. Initially I thought of writing this review tomorrow. But, I woke up from my bed (11:45 PM) to write this review so that no one makes the same mistake as I did after seeing this review.

4 out of 5 stars Best BizTalk Server 2002 book published to date.......2003-11-15

I have used 3 different BizTalk Server 2002 books (one of which covered 2000 mostly, but there are not major differences between the 2 versions). This book is by far the best, it was good for learning and also good for day-to-day reference.

The things I like the most about this book were:
* Good coverage of orchestration (XLANG Schedules) including advanced scenarios such as correlation between 2 or the same schedule.
* How to setup and configure BizTalk for better scalability and availability, i.e. using SQL Server clusters and BizTalk groups.
* How to access BizTalk API from .NET code, although not using the BizTalk toolkit for .NET (probably not available when published), it explains how to create your AIC component in C#, for instance.
* How to setup MOM to monitor BizTalk Server.

The topics I wished were better covered are:
* More advanced maps examples and better explanation of how the BizTalk mapper compiler works.
* More extensive coverage of the BizTalk API.

4 out of 5 stars Better to read than to follow along.......2003-04-29

Xin's writing style is excellent - very easy to follow storyline for a terribly technical topic. However, I found it stressful to try to follow along and repeat the steps he was explaining in the book. For example, he goes through each step in great detail until chapter 5, then the details drop off completely and you just need to start figuring out what he's talking about. Also, in steps that he does take you through, a couple of the pages of the wizards on not in his explanations or the descriptions of the pages are different that what is displayed in the book. Nothing that would keep you from completing the examples, but it sure leaves you wondering about whether or not you're in the right place or skipping something important. Overall, the content is great and again, it's very easy to read. I'd still recommend it despite it's few minor flaws.

5 out of 5 stars Congratulation to Xin Chen for this great book.......2003-02-27

This is the first review I write and I am proud to be the first to review this great book.
I do not like writing reviews but I cannot withhold myself from letting you know more about this book. It is both an excellent introduction to BizTalk server 2002 for beginners and a very detailed treatment of the product for experienced users. The author's method of presentation, which of course reflects his clarity of mind, makes learning BizTalk 2002 interesting, despite the complexity of the product. Once you start reading the book, you will not like to stop. Every one of more than 600 pages has something new to say in a manner that recaptures and sustains you interest. The prints are perfect. The paper quality is excellent and the binding is good. The only regret; it is not hardcover.

If you are looking for a book that can teach you and deepen your understanding of BizTalk 2002, this is the one. I intend using it as a teaching textbook for BizTalk trainings. Congratulations to Xin Chen for this excellent work.
