Book Description
While many texts fail to cover the specific hows of legal analysis and writing such as: how to determine if a case is on point, how to identify the issue, how to state the issue, and how to conduct counteranalysis and incorporate it in an interoffice memorandum of law, this book stresses application through many examples in each chapter that illustrate key concepts and principles, and explains the elements, techniques, and specific considerations involved in the process. The book is national in scope, and is an invaluable reference to practicing legal assistants and first year law students.

Customer Reviews:
One of the best I've read.......2006-03-17
I am not a CPA or Finance major. I am a physicist so the math is not intimidating. I have been investing as an amateur since retirement and this book gives solid and easily understood ways to get at the valuation of a company and its stock by investigating the financial statements. There is a good comprehensive case study at the end of the book, but I wish the authors would give more examples either within or at the end of each chapter.
Informative, but hard to read.......2003-07-08
I did not finish this book because it is written in a very academic and hard to grasp language. Authors, please make your sentences a little shorter and simpler, the book is very boring and verbose! However, I must give credit to the authors for including almost all of the tools one will need for analysis of financial statements.
Each edition of this book just gets better and better!.......2000-06-03
I have bought every edition of this book, and it just keeps getting better and better. As a 25 year veteran of corporate finance, I continue to use this book myself on a regular basis and to recommend it to less experienced employees who are still developing their expertise. Every finance library should have this book.

The Methodology of Experimental Economics
ASIN: 0691058970 |
Book Description
This book, which comprises eight chapters, presents a comprehensive critical survey of the results and methods of laboratory experiments in economics. The first chapter provides an introduction to experimental economics as a whole, with the remaining chapters providing surveys by leading practitioners in areas of economics that have seen a concentration of experiments: public goods, coordination problems, bargaining, industrial organization, asset markets, auctions, and individual decision making.
The work aims both to help specialists set an agenda for future research and to provide nonspecialists with a critical review of work completed to date. Its focus is on elucidating the role of experimental studies as a progressive research tool so that wherever possible, emphasis is on series of experiments that build on one another. The contributors to the volume--Colin Camerer, Charles A. Holt, John H. Kagel, John O. Ledyard, Jack Ochs, Alvin E. Roth, and Shyam Sunder--adopt a particular methodological point of view: the way to learn how to design and conduct experiments is to consider how good experiments grow organically out of the issues and hypotheses they are designed to investigate.
Customer Reviews:
Good review/ Introduction.......2005-09-15
The Handbook is a good introduction to some of the key research lines in experimental economics. It is a great place to get started with the literature.
extremely comprehensive yet succinct.......2000-10-11
Who wants to know how experimental economics has evolved, what experimental economists cover and do? Anyone who has ever thought why people make seemingly irrational decisions can read this book and find out how the research has been evolving in that regard! Find interesting differences from economists' view, compared with psychologists' view. The book is a must for any experimental economists, and all researchers interested in judgment and decision making. This is a great book for any experimental economics course... and the website maintained by Alvin Roth is a treasure for further research.

Book Description
This long-awaited companion and update to H. James Harrington's best-selling Business Process Improvement is a hands-on implementation guide. It focuses on upgrading information distribution paths to optimize the many processes with which they come in contact. Filled with lists, charts, and appendices, this workbook tells how to document a company's processes, analyze current effectiveness, design new processes, use system enablers, and much more.
Customer Reviews:
It is what it is...and provides solid material.......2007-03-13
I agree with other reviewers who question the designation "workbook." Actually, what we have here is a book which suggests the work which each reader must complete -- individually and in collaboration with others -- with regard to the documentation, analysis, design, and management of business process improvement. It provides no head-snapping revelations, nor do its co-authors claim to offer any. Obviously, it is important to improve performance continuously by improving various processes during which tasks are completed. It is also important to measure only what matters. Finally, all organizations (regardless of size or nature) must develop leaders at all levels and within all areas who drive change initiatives to achieve these objectives. Harrington, Esseling, and van Nimwegen offer a comprehensive, cohesive, and cost-effective methodology. Once having identified the "what," they focus on "how."
As the authors explain, Business Process Improvement (BPI) consists of four different approaches designed to improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and adaptability of administrative processes: Fast Analysis Solution Technique (FAST), process benchmarking, process redesign, and process reengineering. They recommend a six-phase process that leads to the implementation of the best-value future-state solution: Organization, Documentation, Analysis, Design, Implementation, and Management. They then focus on each approach and each phase, suggesting similarities and differences between and among them.
I would have rated this book even higher had the presentation of the material been more "reader-friendly." By the time I reached Chapter 5 on page 167, the monotonous tone of the narrative to that point made it difficult for me to sustain my concentration. I always appreciate the provision of checklists, for example, because they organize and summarize key points, and, because they facilitate (indeed expedite) review of them later. To repeat, the material is solid. The authors obviously know what they are talking about. Their observations are based on real-world situations. Their suggestions are sensible. That said, this reader (at least) had to work much too hard to locate, absorb, and then digest the authors' core concepts.
No doubt other readers will find the material more accessible. My guess (only a guess) is that many of those who do will be C-level executives in larger organizations who already know much more about BPI than I do. I wish them and their associates well, hoping they can effectively apply -- and then have their organization benefit substantially from -- what Harrington, Esseling, and van Nimwegen offer.
A Very Useful Process Improvement Reference.......2006-09-19
I agree with the other reviewers, as I first purchased this book assuming that it was a "workbook" with working examples. It wasn't this type of workbook, but is a very valuable resource for the process-improvement minded. It could have utilized more illustrations - I suggest creating your own diagrams as you read through this book. This is the approach I took whilst reading the book and was very satisfied with the results.
Documentation, a very important subject that is often overlooked and/or underutilized, is explained very well in this book, describing the level of detail required to support a successful process improvement initiative. The Appendix XI - guidelines for designing forms and documents is fantastic and I recommend it for anyone considering facilitating process improvement workshops.
The organization chapter on organizing a process improvement team is very good - managers and especially companies wanting to accelerate their process improvement successes could benefit from this instruction.
The Defining Improvement Opportunities chapter was also very informative, linking the need for standardization with IT, administration and operations.
And lastly, don't discount one of the authors - H James Harrington. He is one of the best business writers in the business for topics ranging from process improvement, project management, customer service or even human resources. Don't miss a chance to read anything he has written.
I would disagree that this book is dry - it is well written and researched and if it had contained a few more illustrations, I would have given this book a 5-star rating.
Process Improvement Classic Reference.......2006-05-31
This book serves as a powerful reference on process improvement.
The author, H.J. Harrington, is wise. We can learn a lot from him. He's got great experience from the firm, Ernst and Young.
The book provides a deep, well-structured and methodical glimpse into the practice of process improvement.
Although there are many books on the subject (older and newer) this book is foundational. It blends TQM and Industrial engineering concepts. At some degree it is a "deep dive" into the Six Sigma method's Business Process Architecture (BPA) tool.
This book is a great reference for consultants, line managers, business process managers/owners and business analysts as well as anyone wanting a thorough understanding of Process Improvement.
Reading it and applying the practices described within may save companies money. It can build career enhancing compentencies in those that adopt/practice what they have learned.
For the relatively low price you can have access to the mind of a sage.
Buisness process improvment work book.......2006-03-08
Provide an excellent overview of BPM and provide good examples.
Not bad, could be better.......2002-07-19
I'll agree with users who feel this book is dry, dry, dry. I also have some issues with the design of the book. There were concepts that I found confusing until I drew my own flow charts -such aids could certainly have been included in the book. There were too many bulleted lists that probably should have been numbered for easier reference and ranking. Where this book shines is on the mechanics on BPI; how to organize the project and the teams (although a good project manager should know how to do this), the sequence of steps to go through, and how to organize all the collected information.
What is missing from this book, in my opinion, is discussion on Risk Management and Change Management. You can document processes and manuals and forms until you're blue in the face, but in the end, you'll have to get human beings to buy into the difficult task of changing processes to reach the future state, and there is little discussion of this.

Customer Reviews:
introduces the key ideas like Black-Sholes option modelling.......2006-06-06
Starting from scratch, assuming just a basic knowledge of calculus and the summation of series, Choudhry explains important ideas about how securities and derivatives are priced. Crucial concepts like how to model interest rates, and the various models that do exist for this purpose, are also gone into. This is built upon with the use of interest rate swaps, of varying complexity.
For options, there is the seminal Black-Scholes model. It is shown to be easy to understand, resting on the assumption of a Weiner process for the asset pricing. More elaborate option modelling is possible, and several of these are discussed.
Really good for newbie.......2005-12-31
By saying newbie, I mean at least you should know some basic terminology like duration, convexity, interest rake risk, etc. It's really for those who have some basic knowledge on fixed income securiteis and want to explore more in depth. I personally read some chapters from Fabozzi's handbook, and feel like it's not very technical oriented and I prefer this one.
Haven't finished reading yet, but so far, very comprehensive, concise and lucid.

Book Description
One of the keys to investment success is the ability to identify the most promising companies in the leading industries. But that is not as simple as it sounds. Although most investors, portfolio managers, and finance students understand the basics of investment analysis, the dynamics of individual industries are more difficult to grasp since they can vary greatly from one industry to another.
The Handbook of Canadian Security Analysis is the definitive guide to analyzing the industry sectors in the Toronto Stock Exchange 300 Composite Index. It gives you the analytical tools you need to measure profitability and stock potential in every major industry grouping of the Canadian market. This two-volume reference brings together — for the first time ever — advice from twenty-seven of Canada's top financial analysts. Each chapter gives practical, expert advice on what makes a particular industry tick:
- industry overview
- trends and developments
- key performance measures
- markets and competition
- the regulatory environment
- cyclical and seasonal influences, and much more.
The Handbook of Canadian Security Analysis gives you a rare glimpse into the world of financial analysts: what they look for, and how they make their decisions. This distinguished group of financial experts share their vast experience and specialized knowledge on how to analyze specific industries to help you invest for success:
- the factors that underlie analysts' stock selections
- the analytical techniques, yardsticks, and tools of the trade used to value securities
- the quantitative and qualitative factors to take into account when analyzing stocks in each particular industry
- when to buy and sell individual securities
- how and where to get more information on the industry.

Customer Reviews:
Great book with rare insight.......2006-04-20
The chapter on level 2 alone is worth the price of the book. Yes the markets have changed and will continue to change, but you can always apply the general principles. Example: accumulation is accumulation regardless of what the market conditions are. Chris points out how to spot accumulation on level 2 and T&S, and if you grasp the idea, you should be able to spot them in any market with the tools available.
Very useful, if somewhat out of date..........2002-02-17
There is much useful material, along with a thoughtful approach to creating a daytrading discipline, in this book. I don't fully agree with (and wouldn't expect to) all of Lewis' statements, and, as you might expect, given the changes in the trading environment over the last couple of years, many of his methods and observations are arguably already out of date, but others still apply, and his overall philosophy, perspective, and attitude are probably more important, in my opinion, than the particulars of his personal approach as practiced in and around late 2000. The text includes numerous clear, concrete, and detailed examples, though you may have to look past an L2 screen with a stack of QCOM buyers at 343 13/16 (I just never get over mania-market prices) to receive the message.

These strategies don't work.......2001-05-24
I lost money using these strategies. Buy Steve Nison book if you want a good book on TA. This one just doesn't measure up.
All in all, a rather decent book.......2000-11-16
The good points: first, the book's emphasis is on trading the open, offering a straight forward strategy for playing momentum type gaps. Second, the book has a thorough review of TA basics filtered by practical and experienced advice. Third, there were several odds and ends (like NASDAQ having two data feeds, do the S&P Futures really say anything, etc) that were indeed helpful.
The not so good points: while, its all there, you have to really read the text carefully to extract what you need - meaning it could have been better organized for flow in some chapters. Second, a week in the life "Trading Week" would have been more satisfying if it had been two weeks long and not one (the author might disagree).
All in all, a rather decent book that I value for its level-headed, lets stick to the basics, here's what really works kind of thinking.

only game in town .......2006-02-13
Prof Sage is the gold standard wrt all things SE.
This is a comprehensive handbook that covers most SE topics.
It is not a cookbook or guide to doing SE. Nor is it a software handbook.
.
It is intended for people with some knowledge and experience that want to fill in or refresh their understanding of a given area concerning systems engineering.
There is no real competition. incose members have their orgs handbook which is in a constant state of flux as incose cant even agree on what SE is.
.
There are some govt tutorial books such as those from dsmc and dau. The cost is free and should also be in everybodies library.
Nasa and some other agencies have some dated compilations of their view of SE. Again free. Good for reference if you have the KSAs to know what is valid and what is obsolete or incorrect.
.
Sage's handbook is due to be updated and revised. Whether we will see another edition remains to be seen. He is currently busy working on Systems ARchitecture. Hopefully his classes and research will result in another book on that topic if not also inclusion of that with other new material in the SE hbk.
.
This book belongs in libraries. Have your company order one.
Whether an individual would want to spend this much depends on how much use they would make of it. Some program managers who are not SE experts may find it worth buyign for their own use.
.
The two star review above was clearly by a disgruntled student who had it as a class reference. My students bellyache about every book they are required to buy. None of them ever buy an optional book. Judge the book for your needs not by a student who got a bad grade.
.
Handbook or just a collection of essays?.......2003-10-30
I was very dissapointed with this book. Essentially it is a collection of essays on various topics with no logical flow or organization. In addition, no time was taken to present the material in any way useful to a student of Systems Engineering. I was required to purchase this book for a graduate class I am taking. Initially I believed that it was a sound investment and that I would retain the book as a valuable reference. Now I can't wait to sell it back. I question whether or not the editors did more than just staple together 30 essays.
