1 out of 5 stars The boring book ever I read.......2004-07-10

This book was probably a very good information provider in year 1998-1999. You will not gain any knowledge if you read this book. Most of the reference web sites are not existing now and if they are, they are not in business. Most of the people I know hate this book. This book is good for power point presentation for a corporate world just for overview of the ecommerce but for text book its just doesn't worth of reading. If there is a chance to give no star rating then i will prefer to give that rating.

3 out of 5 stars My Students Hate This Book.......2004-03-25

This book was probably a good first attempt at an eCommerce text book but now reads a little thin on deep explanations. My students (undergrad) universally hate this book. from what i gather, part of it is just the look and feel of the book - monochromatic and dull. it does not invite steady reading. the page of the book is slow and often cumbersome. i'm not meaning to knock the obvious hard work that has gone into this book but i just want possible instructors to be aware of its shortcomings in terms of students. Excellent as an insomnia cure.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent undergraduate textbook and overview.......2003-06-07

I've used this book as a textbook in an undergraduate e-Business course intended to be taken by business students. In my opinion, it is the finest one on the market for this purpose. It covers a wide variety of topics in sufficient depth to give good foundational understanding. My only two complaints are:

The appendix material on HTML is not needed in the book. Anyone interested in that topic is probably going to buy another more complete book on the topic (perhaps even another Deitel book).

The biggest problem, though, is that this book is becoming very dated. It was made available in 2000. Much has changed since then. Most textbooks of this sort are updated every 2 years. This one needs to be updated to a second edition.

3 out of 5 stars Good Roundup, Difficult Interface.......2001-02-09

This book brings together a unique set of materials about a subject that is growing rapidly. But a lot of it was very hard to find and understand because of the jumbled layout and clashing colors - red headings, pink graphics, purple sidebars! If this were a webpage I would have clicked elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars e-Business & e-Commerce management clearly explained........2001-01-09

Deitel & Deitel have explained e-Business and e-Commerce in an easy to read and understand manner. It is directed to managers who may have a less technical background than those wanting to understand the nuts and bolts of Internet programming. This book discusses the management aspect of e-business and e-commerce, focusing on e-business models, development and management of e-business sites, online financial transactions, security and legal issues, and marketing. The book includes excellent case studies of the various e-business models. It would make an excellent text for either a graduate or undergraduate course in electronic commerce from a management focus. It is also an excellent primer for non-technical managers moving to an e-business model.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars High-level with strategic, proactive goals.......2004-03-16

Because this book is ostensibly aimed at managers and executives do not expect technical details or a discussion at the tactical, day-to-day level. Instead, this book will give busy managers who are removed from hands on security tasks and details of the underlying technologies the knowledge they need to be conversant with those aspects, and a framework for developing a proactive security posture. In fact, this book's strengths are the strategic perspective and proactive approach that are imparted. This is important because in many organizations the security professionals in the trenches tend to take a tactical approach and are forced into reacting to constantly emerging threats, software vulnerabilities, and other challenges that do not allow them the luxury of protecting the business *and* developing strategies and shifting to the proactive.

The author clearly puts e-business system (and general) security into context from business and technical perspectives in Chapter 1. In Chapter 2 he exposes topics that may be far removed from executive and senior management, such as infrastructure and related support issues. Also in this chapter security is introduced into the discussion of infrastructure and systems, setting the stage for subsequent chapters.

Chapters 3 and beyond are focused entirely on security. Each element of e-business security is treated as an individual topic, which provides the necessary background for the next topic. In succession major and common threats are discussed, along with recommended countermeasures. By Chapter 4 the details for effective security management unfold, with well written material on why e-business systems are corporate assets, and a sound framework for managing these systems in a manner that takes into account business imperatives and cost/benefit. Subsequent chapters also cover topics such as responsibility and liability - in short, topics that concern managers.

At nearly 300 pages this book may be too detailed for executives, but is short enough to hold the attention of senior and mid level managers who are responsible for e-business systems. The approach and focus are business first, with only enough information about the underlying technology to provide sufficient understanding to non-technical readers. The approach set forth in the book for managing security is both realistic and viable. What is required to make it actionable is executive sponsorship and management commitment to perform.

Companies are dependent on technology to link personnel across cities, states, and countries, especially as virtual teams become more a part of our business environment. This book provides guidelines for communicating effectively through e-mail and voice mail, suggestions for getting the most out of your conference calls and videoconferences, and creative and practical suggestions for communicating with, building, and managing your virtual team.

    5 out of 5 stars An invaluable step-by-step approach........2000-06-04

Is anyone making money on the Net besides web developers? If so, how can a small business participate, expanding their customer base and growth potential? The E-Commerce Question & Answer Book joins a few others on how to make money on the internet and addresses many side issues, from whether to hire a programmer to create Web pages to understanding how databases work in the e-commerce world. Invaluable here is a step-by-step approach which rates and discusses options and then tells how to achieve goals.

5 out of 5 stars An EXCELLENT guide to making sense of the Internet.......2000-05-13

Very helpful guide...clear, concise & always to the point. We're a nontechnical company (construction) moving a major part of our business toward e-commerce. This book identified and explained many of the issues & questions we'd been stumbling over. Highly recommend it as both a primer and a blueprint for taking on the e-commerce world.

5 out of 5 stars "Must" reading for anyone venturing into e-commerce........2000-04-06

From e-auctions and trading to making sales on the net and evaluating how e-commerce can affect a product's distribution, The E-Commerce Question and Answer Book provides an important basic primer on the topic for business managers who need to consider e-commerce for their business. Chapters explain terminology and provide a foundation for making business decisions.

4 out of 5 stars Great starter for technical folks and business people.......2000-03-26

This book is published so technical people can understand the business perspective of e-commerce and also so business people can understand the technical side of e-commerce. It caters to both audiences without being too boring or too difficult. It is also organized in a question and answer manner that you can quickly get the information you want out of it. You can read the entire book in very little time by skipping over the "tell me more" sections that you don't care to know more about and get more information by reading the "tell me more" sections that you do want to know more about.

The book does seem to be talking to the medium sized business, but all the information is still relevant to the small business person to see the bigger picture of e-commerce for their business. The book is not an exhaustive reference, but it is a good read for anyone getting started who needs to understand the business of getting on-line with your business -- quickly.

1 out of 5 stars The worst tech book I've ever read..........2003-07-14

and I've read quite a few. At least the authors of "HTML for dummies" or whatever don't imagine that they are genuises setting the world on fire.

This book is pretentious, repetitious, phenomenally boring, and completely useless. It consists of little but vacuous management-speak sentences. For example what is one to make of
"A process is something that someone wants to accomplish, including the flow of actions from start to completion"? In the world of normal people, a process is a means to an end, not an end in itself. But the book is riddled with this sort of meaningless juxtaposition of jargon.

There is no point so trivial that this book doesn't feel it's worth repeating at least ten times. There is no technical detail about XML so trivial that this book feels it should include. If you feel that saying that XML uses a tree structure is well illustrated with a picture of what looks like an actual christmas tree (as opposed to something with nodes and edges) then this is probably the book for you. But if you have the slightest interest in the technicalities of XML (even if your interest is limited to ecommerce and management level issues), don't waste your time. Typing XML into google and reading ten random hits will teach you more.

    1 out of 5 stars Insufficient.......2003-02-12

I'm really tired of e-business people coming to me with comments like "I can't see why we can't do ..." and other comments which reflect the absolute lack of technical interest e-business people show for what should be their profession. This book continues this sad tradition. I imagine its effect is to fire up over-enthusiastic MBAs to make XML programmers lives misery.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth reading...........2001-07-25

Especially if you're in the IT field or seeking to break into it (lots of interview fodder here). Most books start with the differences between XML and HTML, how to create a valid XML document, intro the DTD, etc. Simon explains why we need XML! In clear, concise, readable prose, the author explains XML's practical applications. He does an admirable job of conveying XML's importance in terms of ecommerce and B2B applications.

    5 out of 5 stars A business approach.......2001-04-25

If you are in business and IT, read this book. Go elsewhere to learn how to program XML. Read this to learn WHY you need to understand XML, its applications, its potential -- make a wise, informed business decision (and if you don't use it, be prepared to explain why not).

5 out of 5 stars Dry Sense of Humor.......2001-04-18

Simon writes with a twinkle in his eye, as he explains the technical aspects of XML in business terms. His business focus provides a general understanding to both business people and college students. His large number of examples and metaphors will also prove useful for others who are trying to explain the amazing powerful of the XML technology.

      Amazon.com

Remember the old joke "Instant gratification isn't fast enough"? That was something like the reaction Mark Breier had when he picked up a copy of The One Minute Manager, a book he'd once found profound. Now Breier, formerly CEO of Beyond.com and marketing vice president at Amazon.com, found that he was annoyed by the book's leisurely pace. So he sat down to write the Y2K version of one-minute managing, which essentially shows modern executives how to do the job in one-sixth the time.

Breier tells two stories in Internet Manager. First is how he became one after a career in the very-slow-moving world of food marketing, where he was considered lightning-quick for developing new marshmallow packaging in just six months. His year at Amazon.com showed him anything was possible if you worked hard and fast enough. And at Beyond.com, which as CEO, Breier helped to take public, he put together everything he learned to run a company. The second story is how anyone can more efficiently manage themselves and their employees. Some of the advice on financing toward the end of the book is strictly high-level stuff, but in between there's a lot of information that every busy employee can use.

One of the easiest take-home messages (or, rather, take-to-the-office messages; nobody in this world does much at home except sleep) is this: "E-mail morning, noon, and night, but talk in between." He describes e-mail as "the oxygen of the Internet," because it allows people to stay in close touch without all the forced small talk that accompanies telephone conversation. But he also acknowledges that it has its limits, and suggests this rule: "After the third e-mail on the same subject, walk 'n' talk." In other words, get up, sit down with the other person, and hash it out. Other information--about conducting more effective meetings and developing brand identity--can be used by anyone from ambitious middle managers on up. But the key word here is "ambitious." Anyone who has aspirations for a fast ascent in business today can use all the lessons in this book. And, best of all, it only takes a couple of hours to absorb the entire 10-Second message. --Lou Schuler

      Book Description

All managers today are Internet managers, whether they're ready to admit it or not.  It doesn't matter if their business is large or small, old economy or new. In a faster, electronic, and more direct economy, every manager needs help. And here it is. The 10-Second Internet Manager offers quick, no-nonsense tips, tactics, and strategies for succeeding fast in the Internet age from Mark Breier, an on-line expert willing to share the practical lessons he learned as an executive on the front lines of the e-commerce wars.

The 10-Second Internet Manager will show you how to improve productivity and accelerate growth. You'll learn how to use e-mail to keep everyone connected (and when to get up from your desk and go have a talk); how to use the Internet to get a quick customer response to your product, your plan, or even your business model; how to build teams now and how to make sure they're moving forward instead of just around; and how to make effective meetings produce results that contribute to your bottom line.

Best of all, Breier offers proven methods for finding, hiring, and keeping the best and fastest employees -- the ones who can make or break a manager's efforts. And, for all those folks who are jumping into the deep end of the pool -- launching their own dot-com ventures -- Breier even offers advice on the care and feeding of venture capitalists and the joys of 24/7 exhaustion.

The One-Minute Manager changed the world by showing managers how to get the most out of a minute. But in an Internet-speed economy, who has a minute to spare? The 10-Second Internet Manager shows you how to launch your team or your company into the Internet age.

2 out of 5 stars How not to manage yourself or run your business........2006-01-05

This book is an example of how not to manage yourself or your business.

The concepts introduced in this book are neither new nor meaningful, save a few. Throughout the book Mr. Breier talks about doing everything faster than light speed with not a moment to spare for anything. His motto for managing projects seems to be "ready, shoot, aim", a phrase he sprinkles liberally throughout the book. True, fast action is necessary and essential in the internet age, but too many people confuse haste with dynamism.

Mr. Breier spends a whole chapter on branding and building a consistent and recognizable brand on the ineternet. This made me laugh. It's ironic, the very company the author brags about is nowhere to be found today. Beyond.com has now become a job seekers' site, and the website oft quoted in the book, www.10secondmanager.com, now has nothing on it save a "google affiliate program" blurb. So much for branding.

The author writes a lot about the importance of feedback from customers. Towards the latter part of the book he contradicts himself by advising you to ignore message boards, forums, etc because most people who post in such places are "not your customers, not your friends". I don't know which planet this gentleman comes from, but most people I know, who post on forums and message boards are indeed users of a particular product or customers of some company or service, myself included.

This book is all about getting things done at breakneck speed (wrong or right is secondary). The basics of building a strong and long lasting company with good employee loyalty are tossed out.

I was fortunate to have picked up this book at a warehouse sale for $2. I'd have cried had I spent any more money on it. If you want to be a ruthless workaholic madman with no time to spare for your family, friends or children, being on the job 24x7x365, then this book is for you.

4 out of 5 stars streamlining everything you .......2005-03-15

This book is primarily about streamlining everything you do in you normal work day so you're moving at light speed. I thought it was full of excellent tips to help manage your time and effort. I've applied many of the ideas with dramatic results. Suddenly things get done so much quicker and I have more time to focus on the important things. I think this book is full of a lot of great tips.... however... I've noticed that I've given this book a higher rating than a lot of other readers. The bad reviews this book gets usually say "all the stuff he says is so simple and obvious". So I'd just like to point out that it's very easy to say "oh that's easy, everyone knows that", but it's not as easy to do the easy things that everyone already knows.

EX: Everyone knows excersise is good for you. Everyone knows how to do a push up, and everyone know it will help strengthen your arms. However, how many people do as little as 1 push-up a day?

2 out of 5 stars If he knew so much, why are all of his companies bankrupt?.......2004-08-12

Reading this book today is like reading a book of jokes. When the author wrote this, he was riding the wave of "internet madness" that walloped Wall Street with outrageous stock prices for companies that never produced any profit. Mark Breier was simply a man at the right place at the right time and any insights he has on how to effectively run a business is hindered by the facts that both beyond.com and software.net are now nowhere to be found on the internet.

However, an enterprising entrepreneur can read this book and learn what not to do. In addition, there is a paragraph or two that talks about venture capital personalities you will encounter.

In summary, do not buy this book if you are looking for successful ways to run your business as a manager. Taking much of his advise will undoubtedly bring you to his final demise. (In fact, he is no longer a CEO; he is back to Chief of Marketing)

1 out of 5 stars A relic even before it hit store shelves.......2004-07-23

This book should be where beyond.com is right now - in the trash. A perfect example of the smug "there at the right time" internet millionaire espousing common sense, and uncommon nonsense as business practice.

The tone of the book clearly broadcasts the authors ego and self importance. The content, however, reveals the truth; the bubble was always just full of hot air.

If are searching for a reference to help improve your management skills, look elsewhere.
