Beginning E-Commerce offers an excellent demonstration of full-featured e-commerce Web-site construction with the Microsoft suite of development tools. If VB is your language of choice and ASP is your Web scripting selection, this tutorial is a must.

This book has very little general coverage of e-commerce. The entire text is devoted to the step-by-step construction of "Jo's Coffee," a fictitious Web storefront that winds up at the end of the book with a sophisticated order-processing pipeline, online discussion groups, XML integration with outside systems, and much more. In the introduction, the book sets a lofty goal: "... to take you gently from knowing nothing about e-commerce, to a point where you'll be able to put up a Web site that will make money for your business." This text meets this goal for readers who are familiar with the development tools mentioned in the title.

The book does a great job of providing complete commentary for each stage of the development process. It walks the reader through defining an application object model, implementing it with VB COM components, interfacing with a SQL Server database, and adding a number of sophisticated features. One of the most interesting techniques illustrated in this title is a VB COM component-based order-processing pipeline similar to the type found in Microsoft's top-of-the-line Site Server product. Using the example in this book, developers could easily construct custom pipelines for every commerce site they build.

If your core competencies lie in Microsoft-based technologies, this book is a wise investment in the future. It offers eye-opening possibilities for creating your own industrial-strength e-commerce sites. --Stephen W. Plain

Topics covered: COM and e-commerce object models, product catalog, shopping basket, checkout, order processing, promotions, certificates, pipeline construction, transaction management, deployment, e-mail integration, discussion groups, XML integration, and marketing tips.

5 out of 5 stars This book is for newbies, too.......2003-01-09

This book is a must have if ASP is the code of your choice in ecommerce. I am a newbie at programming and knew almost nothing about ASP, SQL, n-tier architechure and COM+ prior to reading this book, but it held my hand through each step so that I could follow along and understand what was happening. I liked the way WROX publishing shows you the code, tells you how it works, and then try it out, explaining each line and method.

Best of all, at the end of the book you actually have a very functional website (I believe according to Microsoft specifications) that can be modified and added onto easily. Our business is now up on the web and we are very happy with the way it works.

Downloading the source code from WROX is not hard. Although there are a few errors in it they have all been corrected and published in the errata section of the WROX.com website for the book. I actually believe that the author tried out the code and was happy with it before publication.

Now for the main draw back. If you want to get the most from this book you need to buy some expensive software, which I purchased and found to be a great investment, namely Visual Studio (for the InterDev and Visual Basic) and SQL Server 2000 on a Windows 2000 operating system. As of the middle of 2002 I couldn't purchase the SQL Server 7.0 (it was upgraded to SQL Server 2000) or MTS (it was integraded into the Windows 2000 operating system) so that I could use my Windows98. But, this doesn't apply if you know someone with the above legacy software and they let you use theirs or if you get it from EBay. Happy programming.

4 out of 5 stars Good starting point for e-commerce.......2002-12-07

For whatever reason, there are a lot of E-commerce applications still running using Visual Basic 6.0, ASP 3.0, SQL Server 7.0, and MTS (i.e. Windows NT 4.0). These applications may be in the process of being converted to newer technologies or they may be "Legacy" code, but they still need someone to support them. Matthew Reynolds book provides the needed skills to do just that. This is a good book for aquiring those skills.

2 out of 5 stars No Website code/support from WROX........2002-05-09

Don't expect any code from this book from the WROX website - the book says it's available but I couldn't find it - and the people at WROX don't answer their email. I like the book, don't like the publisher much.

5 out of 5 stars DON'T BUILD A WEBSITE WITHOUT THIS BOOK !!!.......2002-03-25

If you want to build the sophisticated and secure E-Commerce web site in ASP and VB, this book is right to you. Many of books conferred about how to build a shopping cart but not the security of the transaction. At first before I buy this book, I want to learn about web security that applied in internet banking or in transaction, so then I start to read several books about SSL, SET, Digital Certificates, PKI, etc. I just find much information about the infrastructures (like an introduction) not the application. At least I find this book and read the index, then I find that all I want to know available in here obviously and completed with the installations (of course it is 600 pages). SSL, Digital Certificates, etc wouldn't conferred to deep/detail, but I think that's no problem, because this book will show you how to actually build the site content and features, I just applied it online. It is like if you can create the animation from Macromedia Flash then not necessary to knowing how Macromedia Flash software created isn't? ^_^.After buy this book, don't forget to download the source code and the explanations of this book. (Only in several KB). You'll find the address in book, where you can download the files.Hei...I just apply the informations of this book to my website...

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book.......2007-10-03

I have read many technical books and this is so far the best. I know my way around computers and the basics of programming and wanted to learn some more of ASP.NET. This book has been an excellent tutorial. Even the basics of object oriented programming and SQL are explained. Loved it.

There is one caveat. The book was written for Windows XP and IIS 6. If you are using Windows Vista and IIS 7 like me, be prepared to search for some stuff yourself. Do not worry though, some Googling will help you along the way.

4 out of 5 stars good for beginner and semi-experienced asp.net developers.......2007-08-23

i got into dot net when it first came out, when sample codes on how do things you take for granted were scarce or non existent. I was converting an ASP app to dot net. was ahead of my time, ran into too many mundane issues, cancelled my project after 5 months. Now I want to try ASP.NET for real.

I've found this book to be very helpful in connecting the dots. The samples are good enough . Highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars I found the right book to learn asp.net.......2007-05-24

I am an asp programmer. And I would like to transform myself into asp.net. after trying one title after another by reading the PDF files that I found on the net, I thought I found the right book ASP.NET 2.0 Unleashed from Stephen Walther. I bought the book and learned from it. But I got stuck somewhere after the basic controls. The author assumes that the reader is either intermediate or advanced level with the .NET programming skill. I am not at that level yet. Again I went back to find other PDF files and I found this one and I knew this was the perfect fit for me. I bought the book and I am very happy with this book. it teaches asp.net 2.0 from beginning level. It explains in details all the basic knowleges that an asp.net programmer needs to know. Then it moves on to ado.net. But all these are just basics only. not going too far into advanced level. One thing that I like is that I build the project while learning. There are minor wording error. If you don't know programming, then this is the problem. If you already know programming (VB,C#), then you can see the wording error and correct yourself.
If you are looking for a book that set you up from start with .NET, this one is the right one. If you already have the basic of asp.net and would like to get to the advanced level, then you may be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Its a good book.......2007-02-24

The Book overall is good, but there are some mis-types in the code that, if you follow along, will screw you up. Its also vague about some things, but if you have some basic knowledge of visual studio and/or asp, it is a good reinforcement.

5 out of 5 stars Here's all the information you need to get up and running with ASP.NET.......2007-02-03

Examples, insights, and even code samples pack a reference for programmers working in C# and VB in an updated second edition to a popular step-by-step guide. Here's all the information you need to get up and running with ASP.NET, from how to build a first web site to applying the free code samples within to more advanced projects. It's a top pick programmers - especially newcomers to ASP.NET - won't want to be without.

4 out of 5 stars good introductory discussion.......2005-02-27

The authors have put together a primer on explaining e-commerce. The ideal audience for this book appears to be an IT manager or perhaps a programmer. The discussion is mostly at a level above actual programming. You don't need working knowledge of JavaScript, HTML, Java, web servers or other related topics.

The book delves into key ideas of organising a web service, such as what is an n-tier application. Cryptography also gets good coverage. A qualitative explanation is given of the Public Key Infrastructure and Certificate Authorities, without descending into the maths of number theory.

Malware is also covered. Though, given its increasing severity, perhaps a more extensive analysis may have been warranted.

Overall, the book places all these topics in the context of building and running a large e-commerce service. If you do wish to go in this direction, the book is a good start. Though you will certainly need more specialised texts later.

5 out of 5 stars Great for the beginner!.......2000-11-29

I read one of the reviews for this and the person indicated that they were very disappointed. I, on the other hand, was looking for a textbook to use for one of my classes and I was delighted with it. You can tell this book was written by academics because where one may think that it is condescending, I think it is thorough. If you are teaching this subject then you know how difficult it is to keep up with all of the information. It's like trying to change a tire on a moving car. I think that this book gives a perfect base-level information presentation, and the variety of each category is deep. I am supplanting this book with two other books for my course 22 Laws of Marketing by Reis & Trout; and Jakob Nielsen's tome on Web Usability). But this is a great place to come back to, particularly for the slower students.

1 out of 5 stars great for children.......1999-10-29

I am extremely disappointed, perhaps this is the reason that retail book stores are still in business. Had I had the chance to thumb through the book, I would have never purchased it. It is a condescending primitive level intro to the web and commerce on the web. It is not for marketing professionals nor professionals of any kind. Probably high school kids would be offended as well. The audience is people who have never even surfed! I think that this would be a good intro for the computer-illiterate who is looking for basic information. The real problem is that it was not advertised nor reviewed in that light.

4 out of 5 stars A great,up-to-date primer for users and web newcomers........1999-07-26

Although extremely comprehensive, this book is not for the marketing professional. It is an excellent summary of all the web has to offer, and highlights a number of not-so-well-known url's that are a great resource for individuals setting up a small e-commerce website.

Aimed at the intermediate VB developer, Visual Basic Developer's Guide to E- Commerce with ASP and SQL Server is an appealing and approachable tour of the basics of building e-commerce Web sites powered by ASPs. Focused on real results, this book is all you need to start mastering e-commerce using some of today's most popular Microsoft tools.

The guide shows how to build an online CD store (with some clothing, like T-shirts, thrown in for good measure) by combining ASPs using VBScript and ADO for calling SQL Server stored database procedures on the back end. Instead of learning about every whistle and bell, you find out what works specifically for a small online store. Early chapters let you design the database and get up and running with a workable browser interface, including a shopping basket, order history, and tax and shipping computations. Later chapters add administrative and management functions for changing what products are available (among other options). In its final version, the Web site gets support for cross-promotions and putting products on sale.

Although the solution doesn't take advantage of MTS/COM+ on the middle tier, you can expect good results with this approach because of stored procedures. The book also does a good job of planning for scalability with sections on Web server architecture and performance tuning. For more advanced development, there's also a thorough tour of more advanced options for e- commerce on the Microsoft platform centering on Site Server, Commerce Edition (with its customizable pipeline model). The text closes with a consideration of the sample stores available within this package.

E-commerce on the Windows server platform can certainly be daunting. Visual Basic Developer's Guide to E-Commerce with ASP and SQL Server is easy to understand, and it delivers an approachable tutorial on practical and successful development using some of the most important Microsoft tools. It will definitely help you build sites that work for real-world online commerce. --Richard Dragan

Topics covered: Tutorial for building an e- commerce site, ASP and VBScript basics, Microsoft Site Server, Commerce Edition, and tools, SQL Server basics and stored procedures, Visual Basic 6, security and certificates, database tables for e-commerce, server farms and scalability, load balancing, the store foundation and basic user interface, shopping basket, checkout, taxes and shipping, administrative screens, promotions, cross-selling and up-selling, managing sales, the order processing pipeline, overview of Site Server sample stores, best practices and scalability.

    Book Description

This unique book gives experienced Visual Basic developers all the information they need in order to develop sophisticated e-commerce solutions using Microsoft technologies. Readers learn how to build a online store, complete with shopping carts, order status elements, security, and other features, using Visual Basic, SQL Server, Visual InterDev, and Active Server Pages. This is a nuts-and-bolts book, not an executive overview. Author Noel Jerke is a member of Microsoft's Commerce Partner Advisory Council and an author of several Visual Basic books.

    5 out of 5 stars Best E-Commerce book........2005-11-25

I just love this book. Few years back I got this book when I was working as FoxPro programmer creating only simple forms and saving data into FoxPro tables. Once I got this book, it changed my life, and I started moving away from windows application after four years of programming and started learning more about web.

I created few e-commerce sites that year, and now I work as senior application developer for #1 web development company (Mercury Web Solutions) in Albany NY where I do mostly ASP.NET (C#) development and create Content Management System (CMS).

4 out of 5 stars BEst book on E-Commerce ASP & SQL Server.......2004-07-24

I think Noel did a good job writing this book. The code is well laid out. Code is reusable, and above all it doesnt tie you lot into registering DLLs. The only minus is for not having the full code on the CD which is mentioned in the book.
Over all its a good reference for beginners to mid level programmers.

5 out of 5 stars The most useful book I've ever bought.......2003-04-08

This book bring me from Intermediate level into advanced level.
It shows you all real useful examples by utilizing ASP, VB, Db design, and Stored Procedures calls. It's kind of learning how real-world sophisticated shoppong sites(like amazon.com) are created. I am very happy with the book. If you want to become a professional web developer, or learn how to design a data-driven web site, the book is what you want.

I recommend that the book is for Intermediate level who has some experiences in VB, SQL Server.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book I have ever seen on e-commerce.......2002-03-01

Although title says developer's guide but it makes a reader from novice to developer. Before that e-commerce was complicated, difficult even reading other books makes you confuse more about the subject but after reading this whole concept becomes clear. In my opinion Only prerequisite for reading this book is some databases experiance, it will accelarate if reader have experiance in Access, Sql server. The 99 percent Use of stored procedure is one of the greatest thing by Noel. I have built my web site base on concept and examples given in this book. Though there might be some minor errors but I think they make you learn and eventualy they make you master the vb script, stored procedure and concept.
I congrulate Noel and request him to upgrade this book to Asp.net and vb.net as well as other of his book named e-commerce developer's guide to building community tools.

    Thanks Noel

2 out of 5 stars Too Many Errors.......2001-04-08

I agree with many reviewers of this book that there are simply too many errors. The book is divided into two parts. The first part is devoted to the development of a website. The second part is devoted to the management of a website. It is in the second part of this book that one would find a majority of the errors.

Most of the errors I found are simple typos, such as on page 413 the author forgot to close an input tag. There are some many of these types of errors that I grew accustomed to finding them whenever I tested the codes.

Some errors I found are logical errors. They consumed a lot of my time whenever I tried to fix them. Take for example; on page 466 the author did not include codes to clear several option variables. Thus, each time a new loop was performed, the option variables still contained old values from the previous loop. This produced very unexpected results. Once I added my own codes to clear the option variables before a new loop, the problem was solved.

It became clear to me that the author had not tested the codes because if he had, he would have discovered the same errors.

Use this book as a learning tool. But proceed with caution as it is plagued with many errors.
