Book Description

Women are constantly being told that it's simply too difficult to balance work and family, so if they don't really "have to" work, it's better for their families if they stay home. Not only is this untrue, Leslie Bennetts says, but the arguments in favor of stay-at-home motherhood fail to consider the surprising benefits of work and the unexpected toll of giving it up. It's time, she says, to get the message across -- combining work and family really is the best choice for most women, and it's eminently doable.Bennetts and millions of other working women provide ample proof that there are many different ways to have kids, maintain a challenging career, and have a richly rewarding life as a result. Earning money and being successful not only make women feel great, but when women sacrifice their financial autonomy by quitting their jobs, they become vulnerable to divorce as well as the potential illness, death, or unemployment of their breadwinner husbands. Further, they forfeit the intellectual, emotional, psychological, and even medical benefits of self-sufficiency.The truth is that when women gamble on dependancy, most eventually end up on the wrong side of the odds. In riveting interviews with women from a wide range of backgrounds, Bennetts tells their dramatic stories -- some triumphant, others heartbreaking. The Feminine Mistake will inspire women to accept the challenge of figuring out who they are and what they want to do with their lives in addition to raising children. Not since Betty Friedan has anyone offered such an eye-opening and persuasive argument for why women can -- and should -- embrace the joyously complex lives they deserve.

3 out of 5 stars The Straw Mom.......2007-10-23

The idea that mothers who forego paid work are taking an economic risk is a simplistic premise for a 300+ page book, but Bennetts delves into many other aspects of women's' lives including job satisfaction, housework and divorce. She did not give much attention to the similarities between the "dependent wives" and the "partners in egalitarian relationships" that she profiled in her book. These commonalities ran the gamut from cajoling partners for help around the house to suffering from stress, anxiety, guilt and depression. The parallels that I noticed in the area of financial decision making and career sacrifices offer opportunities to develop meaningful programs and policies that empower women both at home and on the job. Bennetts addresses a small minority of elite women for whom the idea of optional employment is even a remote possibility. This limited audience is further reduced by Bennetts tendency to scold and denigrate the "stay-at-home wives" in her book.

Dan Baker, the founding director of behavioral medicine at Canyon Ranch, describes a "syndrome" that he calls the Gold Rule: "He who has the gold rules." (p. 213) Sociologist Barbara Kisman's "data has suggested that women without their own source of income have less power in the marriage." (p. 207) As Bennett reports, this holds true in financial matters even for women with their own source of income. She cites a Money Magazine survey which found that 80% of women, who earn less than their partners, do not take the lead in investment decisions for their families. Surprisingly, 60% of women, who are the primary earners in their households, also fail to take the lead in investing. (p. 213) It appears that Baker's rule could be amended to "He who has the XY chromosome rules."

Bennetts made professional sacrifices in order to juggle family and career. She believes that she could have been more successful in her writing career if she had not opted to devote time to raising healthy, well-adjusted children. However, she believes in tomorrow, and she's confident that with luck her new book-writing career will continue for years to come. (p. 136) One of Bennetts' sources was an article by Sylvia Ann Hewlett and Carolyn Buck Luce, which appeared in the March 2005 issue of the Harvard Business Review under the title "Off-Ramps and On-Ramps: Keeping Talented Women on the Road to Success". Hewlett and Luce reported that 38% of highly qualified women have deliberately chosen a position with fewer responsibilities and lower compensation than they were qualified for in order to fulfill responsibilities at home. 36% say that they worked part time, and 16% have declined promotions. (Hewlett & Luce, p. 46) Among women who opt out of careers to attend to family matters, an overwhelming majority have every intention of tackling the difficult task of returning to the work force. (p. 77) On average, women lose 18% of their earning power when they take an "off-ramp". This loss is even higher in the business sector, and higher still if the absence from the labor market continues for more than three years. (p. 79) But, the HBR article has some good news for women who are interested in opting in to paid positions. "As we write this, market and economic factors, both cyclic and structural, are aligned in ways that guarantee to make the constraints and skill shortages huge issues again." (Hewlett and Luce, p. 49) CEO's are wondering how they will find enough high caliber talent to drive growth. Current strategies revolve around the retention and reattachment of highly qualified women on nonlinear career paths. (Hewlett and Luce, pp. 49-50)

In the final chapter of the book, Bennetts writes that her heart aches for the women who are unprepared for the challenges they will likely face in the devastation following unexpected events. She is dismayed by the stubborn defensiveness of women who will not admit to the pitfalls of their reliance on blind faith to safeguard their futures. However, she seems blissfully unaware that her decision to depict the stay-at-home mothers in her book as blithe, disapproving, parasitic Scarlet O'Hara's makes her claim of deep regard for these women seem slightly less than genuine. It is unlikely that a professional journalist does not understand that words matter. If the unvarnished economic facts do not convince the current generation of highly qualified professional women of the importance of financial independence, maybe the specter of Bennetts' straw mom will.

4 out of 5 stars Please read this book.......2007-10-03

I am a female attorney who has been practising family law for 26 years.
When I first started out, I represented many women who were married in the 1940's, 50's and 60's, when society felt that every woman's place was in the home. As a result, many "displaced homemakers" suddenly found themselves facing poverty in their old age. My own generation (the baby-boomers) all seemed to gravitate towards careers, so the displaced, poverty-stricken homemakers would be a thing of the past, right?
Wrong.
I am stunned to discover how many women in their 20's and 30's (the so-called post-feminist generation) are opting to become stay-at-home moms.
What is the problem, you ask?
In one word - DIVORCE.
And don't say it'll never happen to you. After all, I'm sure you buy smoke detectors, don't leave matches within your children's reach, don't leave candles or a stovetop unattended - but I'll also bet you also have homeowner's insurance, in case the unthinkable happened and your house caught on fire.
I've known so many women who tried so hard to be terrific wives, great mothers - and still found themselves divorced. Making sure you always have marketable skills so that you are able to support yourself and your children is like buying homeowner's insurance.
Of all the divorced SAHM's I've known, very very few are able to return to the workforce and earn enough money to support their families in the same lifestyle they enjoyed during the marriage. Sure, you can always get a minimum-wage job as a sales clerk or a waitress, but it will not buy you a middle-class lifestyle. Well-paying jobs will go to either a) recent college graduates, with newly-learned marketable skills or b) people who have spent the last 5, 10 or 15 years working their way up the ladder.
This book is a must-read, especially for young SAHM's who are confident that their marriage will last forever and that they will have no trouble re-entering the workforce any time they choose. I do have two criticisms, though: one, it is repetitive (one needn't repeat the same thing over and over to make a point) and it focuses almost exclusively on upper-middle class women, who are only a minority of the population.
Actually, upper-middle class SAHM's often suffer the worst, financially and emotionally, from a divorce, since they tend to have the most unrealistic expectations about the workplace (especially those who never worked outside the home at all) and they experience the biggest drop in lifestyle.
The men, on the other hand, tend to do very well after the divorce, simply because they have always had a well-paying career, without interruption, and after the initial financial hit (splitting the assets and paying child support) they keep on earning a high income, year after year.

2 out of 5 stars Use of Ancedotal Evidence Left Me Frustrated and Confused.......2007-09-27

I would not recommend this book. It's a shame really, b/c I think Ms. Bennetts has a good message. Unfortunately she seems to base many of her points on ancedotal evidence. The writing style was a bit choppy and I couldn't figure out if Ms. Bennetts simply chose the wrong ancedote each time or if she truly wants women to not only support themselves, but to drive fancy cars and live in fancy houses.

Her apparent emphasis on material wealth repeatedly seemed to undermine her intentions. And the use of ancedotal evidence just compromised her authority. Perhaps I should have been tipped off at the start of the book when she used her mother as an example of a woman that was able to balance family and work successfully without reprocussions. (Too bad she doesn't emphasize the fact that her grandmother provided the childcare.)

Another example is when she put down a stay-at-home mom for driving old cars in order to live in a wealthy neighborhood with a good school system. Ms. Bennetts seemed to imply that the mother should go back to work so her family could afford new cars and other such luxuries. Surely this wasn't her point, or was it?

I was looking for a book that would support my decision to remain a working mom; however, examples like these throughout the book left me questioning the true message of the book and left me frustrated.

5 out of 5 stars SAHMs Beware.......2007-09-27

Women do bash each other too much, but that's probably because we are all trying to be good at so many contradictory things -- and are afraid we're failing at all of them.

This book has jumped right into the "mommy wars," and been bashed accordingly.

Even though young women want to do life differently than their mothers did (who - trust me - wanted to do life even more differently than THEIR mothers did), we all keep circling around the same problem: We want our families to flourish. We just don't want to become penniless and futureless doing it.

This highly readable book argues that combining work and motherhood is tough but possible and even rewarding. Bennetts contends that depending on husbands to earn all the family money is very risky, and she is quite believable when she describes the many ways that this way of life can go wrong.

Bennetts is also not buying many of the "reasons" that have become fashionable for mom's total surrender of jobs, money, and benefits. She is at her most entertaining when she dissects today's version of the weary cult of motherhood, in which only mom's incessant hands-on attention is presumed to create conditions in which an infant can even survive.

Entertaining and thought-provoking.

5 out of 5 stars Wise Counter Argument to Stay at Home Mom Phenom.......2007-09-10

As far as this topic goes, I've always been a live and let live kind of woman, although I would personally not be comfortable totally relying on a man to support me financially. All the women in my family have worked. I grew up with a working mom, who was a stay at home mom, until she found herself widowed with an 11 month old daughter. When I would hear those "I didn't even know where the checkbook was" stories from women who had either been abandoned or did the abandoning, I always thought...where the heck was your brain? Even if you are a housewife/full time mother, you are and ADULT in your home and should share in the responsibility of guiding your family's financial future. I have a very dear friend who is a stay at home mother and home schools her children. She does part time sales, but guess what..she does the books! Her husband wouldn't dare make a financial move without her and it works for them. Conversely, I have friends who also have husbands who earn a good living, but they work, because they feel they are able to contribute more. As a single woman, it is sometimes daunting to think that I am fully responsible for my financial future..but after reading this book, it reminded me that even if I were married, I would still be fully responsible. I'm also a fairly conservative person, but I have to say, I've seen the church and conservative politicians try to hammer home that the BEST solution for families is to have the mother at home while the father worked. But even GOD allows for personal choice, and if I remember my Bible correctly, the Proverbs 31 woman worked both inside and outside of her household. To me the best solution is to do what works for you. If you feel that you should stay home, then stay home. If you feel that you should work, then work. Each choice, like most choices, comes with its pros and cons. However, whatever your choice, in life, you should always make it a priority to educate yourself and develop a skill.

Book Description

Bennett-Alexander and Hartman’s, Employment Law for Business, 4/e, addresses law and employment decisions from a managerial perspective. It is intended to instruct students on how to manage effectively and efficiently with full comprehension of the legal ramifications of their decisions. Students are shown how to think and analyze employment law facts using concrete examples of management-related legal dilemmas without clear-cut solutions. The methods of arriving at resolutions are emphasized, so that when the facts of the workplace problem are not quite the same, the student can still reach a good decision based on the legal considerations required by law, which remain relevant.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars ok, not great.......2007-08-05

I liked this law book because it has shorter versons of cases for quick lookup. What I hate about this book is that it doesn't list laws like ADA, Title VII, etc. in their entirety. It speaks about parts of them, but doesn't list them for you to read yourself.

1 out of 5 stars One-sided approach to regulation.......2004-08-04

I would have preferred a text that merely reported employers' compliance obligations in an objective manner, rather than portraying employers as the enemy. I generally found the text to be highly politicized and, to some extent, anti-management. This book does little to bridge the gap between the business community and academia.

4 out of 5 stars Employment Law for business.......2004-01-07

As an attorney, manager, and teacher of human resources professionals, I recommend this book. I found that thie information was thoroughly researched. I also appreciated that the legal information was presented in a business context so that managers who are not lawyers could understand the information and readily appy it to real life workplace problems.

2 out of 5 stars Useful Book........2003-06-22

This is an interesting, informative and useful book. I used it for school and it will be one book that I keep. Great case studies.

2 out of 5 stars Employment Law.......2003-02-17

I think the book is so liberal and it advocate large government. Freedom is not through following the forced laws like affirmative action, ADA, etc. but having a choice especially in employment. Employer should have the say on what they want and who they want to work and not work. The book pretty much tells you that this is the law and its good for you ,so follow or else.
That is socialistic.
We are giving more power to the government to tie us down with more laws and regulation. Their responsibility is to protect the citizens and not to do business. That's for the private sector.

5 out of 5 stars Preparation, Preparation, Preparation..........2007-08-23

Well written, easy to use, practical guide to questions you are very likely to hear in your interview. While the claim to provide the "best answers" may be arguable, the questions were on target and the ideas for how one might answer them were excellent. This book is great for those who hire as well as for those who are seeking employment. Worth the investment.

5 out of 5 stars I'm working!.......2007-02-11

I have been out of work for a little over a year, and all my previous employments were temp jobs so I needed to brush up on everything. After reading the reviews I decided to go with this book.

I have never regretted it since and have recommended it to close friends. I kid you not when I say that during my interview I ended up interviewing the interviewer. Before the interview I did what the book said and read up on the company and found out that they had won several awards which I later mentioned to her. Apparently none of the other candidates did their homework b/c she acted impressed over that. I asked questions concerning downsizing, why she chose to work there, how long has she worked for the company, her management style. She was very friendly and very talkative...ended up telling me about her daughter in college, her background (which I found out we were raised in the same country!), etc. Making sure not to discuss salary/benefits with her (something the book recommended and I stuck to until I met the VP who gave me what I asked for) And eventhough I had to be tested after speaking to her, I was confident enough to ask her questions during the test and be honest about things I didn't understand. She even showed me the tricks behind the test! Something the recruiter said was not done with anyone else. The only thing I wished I had done was my homework in salary negotiating. So for those of you out there, do your homework on salary and negotiating tips before the interview! Do get this book for you high school/college grad. It's easy to read, down-to-earth, and for today's job hunters.

3 out of 5 stars Just Okay.......2007-01-28

There was some good information in this book. However, there's very little new infromation that's not available for free somewhere else. What's you're paying for is mainly the time it took the author to compile the infromation gathered from numerous places. Most people serious enough to buy a book like this probably won't have a problem finding work anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Land your dream job!.......2006-11-24

I bought this book because I was told of pending layoffs due to selling a division of the company. I had been there almost 5 years, so I definitely needed to get a review on my Interviewing skills.
This book prepared me with questions that might be asked, possible answers and questions that cannot be asked. I especially liked Ch.10 "Stress Questions" These type questions really make you think about your career, where you've been and where you intend to go. Answers to these questions, I feel, enable you to elaborate on other questions that might be asked during an interview. It really is about the applicant as a whole and what you have to offer that company.

This book helped me land my dream job (seriously) and I hope it does the same for you!

4 out of 5 stars A good book to review when looking for a job.......2006-11-21

If for nothing else the books forces you to review your work history and have every bit of information about your self available.

The numerous questions will help anyone become more familiar with one's self and be able to answer most any question without hesitation. This book does not have ALL the questions, but just reading through it and answering the ones present forces you to be aware of all your experience (good and bad). Now that you know your "work experience" you can turn it into a resume and better sell your self.

The book was a definite help for me.

THANK YOU AMAZON !!

4 out of 5 stars Fairly good - Not excellent.......2004-11-19

I just took a college level class in which we used this book as the textbook. There is a lot of good information inside which provides a good introduction to the novice on how the process of collective bargaining works. It begins with the history of how it started and continues through the specific issues that collective bargaining entails. There is even a copy of the National Labor Relations Act in the back of the book.

There are some rough spots that should be worked out in the next edition however. Sometimes I found myself lost in the verbage that the author chose to use and had no idea what the point had been. The case studies at the ends of the chapters have no solutions, they ask questions of you and then leave you - a novice - to flounder with no professional direction in the event - which is frequent - that you can't figure out the answer. And, there are some typo's in key locations which end up disproving, instead of proving, the point that the author was attempting to make (very confusing.)

This text is best used in conjunction with lectures by a good professor if you want to get the most out of it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2002-05-17

Great book for the novice negotiator or student.Current, easy to read, practical examples.

5 out of 5 stars Concise & complete.......2002-04-11

The authors provide a complete & concise discussion of the process of collective bargaining within a general labor relations context. Many, current cases, tips from experts, and historical references help present the concepts. A solid text for the novice negotiator or interested student.

5 out of 5 stars The Holy Grail for Federal Job Seekers !.......2007-10-11

Consider the "Federal Resume Guidebook, Fourth Edition," as the bible for serious federal job seekers. A few months ago I attended a Transition Assistance Program (TAP) class before I retired from the Air Force. The TAP instructor lightly covered federal resumes, KSA's, etc., I was totally confused. Family, friends, and former co-workers all provided me with advice on how a federal resume should be written, formatted, and distributed. After several misses on the job market I decided to purchase this book. HALLELUJAH ! This book will take you step-by-step on the federal resume process with some excellent federal resume samples you can use on your quest for a career with government agencies. I also decided to invest in the Entry-Level and Mid-Level Assessment Service offered by the authors company, The Resume Place. If your are serious about your federal job search I strongly suggest you purchase this service. You will not be disappointed. One last item, the author Ms. Kathryn Troutman personally provided me with the assessment and offered some great suggestions I had overlooked when I created my resume. WoW, what great customer service. This book certainly deserves a "Five Stars" plus rating. I'm certain I will catch the attention of the federal agencies where I want to work.

5 out of 5 stars An indispensable and invaluable reference guide.......2007-10-07

Now in a completely updated and expanded fourth edition, "Federal Resume Guidebook: Strategies For Writing A Winning Federal Electronic Resume, KSAs, And Essays" by federal resume expert, career consultant, and government human resources career trainer Kathryn Kraemer Troutman is a practical and superbly presented compendium of instructions that will readily enable anyone seeking federal employment to maximize the effectiveness of their online resume, analyze federal job announcements, and make the cut for interviews based on an effective presentation of their experiences and qualifications. Job seekers are provided with an illustrative wealth of federal resume samples, detailed procedures, and tips. Of special note is Troutman's advice for those transitioning from military service to a federal career, and for those transitioning from Wage Grade to General Schedule positions. With instruction on preparing for the new Behavioral Interview process and strategies for advancing a federal career, the "Federal Resume Guidebook" continues to be an indispensable and invaluable reference guide for job seekers regardless of the federal position being sought after. Simply stated, the "Federal Resume Guidebook" is essential for anyone seeking federal employment and is a fundamentally necessary addition to personal, professional, academic, governmental job center, and community library Jobs/Careers reference collections.

5 out of 5 stars Good but we'll see.........2007-07-04

I found this the to be the best book on the federal application process yet. The examples were detailed as well as the explainations with plenty of examples for the professional GS jobs. As far as it's effectiveness... we'll see.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-05-31

I just wanted to say I got more reaction from the new improved Fed Resume. However, I also changed my regular business resume also and got a job in the regular business world first before the Federal employment world. I do think it works and when I am done with my education, I plan on continuing using this method.

5 out of 5 stars Write a Winning Resume.......2007-05-24

I purchased the book and what a difference it made in creating a resume with some pop. The chapters were easy to follow step by step. It really helped me transform my resume into something worth reading. Also the comments in each chapter were very helpful in bringing to light the many hats I wear at my current job and I was able to translate that knowledge into the qualifications described in the job announcements. It is well worth the investment. If you are truly serious about getting a job with the federal government, then this book is a must.

3 out of 5 stars Is a required textbook for my managing diversity class.......2005-09-21

This isn't a bad book. It was required for a managing diversity class I am taking in graduate school. The content is short readings on various topics generally centering around cultural diversity and discimination. There are group exercises in between some of the readings. The book is very much centered around being used in a group-discussion oriented classroom. I don't think it is worth what is being charged for it, but as far as textbooks go, it is pretty inexpensive.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Book.......2007-01-16

I purchased the book since my employer explained that I will become an independent contractor for 2007. The book explained everything about being a contractor and how to stay in line with paying the taxes, how to protect my self employed status, what deductions I can take, and what forms and agreements I should use. I found it very informative and would recommend it to anyone who wants to understand the world of self employment.

5 out of 5 stars All the legal tips, tricks and traps explained.......2006-04-20

Plenty of books impart the basics of how to work independently - but too few include all the legal tips, tricks and traps involved. WORKING FOR YOURSELF: LAW & TAXES FOR INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS, FREELANCERS & CONSULTANTS covers everything from setting appropriate fees and understanding how and when taxes are paid to limiting liability and getting paid. Record-keeping processes are simplified with sample logs and entry advice, chapters on how the IRS defines an independent contractor versus a paid employee are essential keys to keeping independent status, and advice on pricing and insurance offer key strategy-oriented tips and approaches. A 'must' for any who would work independently.

4 out of 5 stars Great straghtforward information and advice.......2005-09-17

I recently a started an S corp for my software contracting. The book is helpful and worth the price. It won't answer EVERY question you will have, but you probably should talk to a CPA for those anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Another Nolo Press Winner.......2005-07-28

My husband is an independent photographer, so the Nolo Press books are great for him, geared as they are to all those wishing to handle all the paperwork for themselves, instead of the usual array of lawyers, accountants, etc. He keeps it as a reference book and can easily turn to whatever subject he needs more information on. Well-written and easy to understand, as are all Nolo books, these books are wonderful to review periodically.

5 out of 5 stars Straighforward intro to the legal aspects of freelancing.......2004-05-04

A potential employer asked that I incorporate my freelancing business before they start sending me jobs. I wanted to do some research on the pros/cons of incorporating, what kind of start-ups costs this would entail, and what kind of corporation I should be. At first, the whole process of incorporating sounded like a huge money burden on my part--with filing fees and taxes--but this book has helped me sort out the issues and provided detailed information about the different ways to incorporate--sole proprietorship, LLC, S-corps. Although I haven't yet decided which path I will take, this book has made the jump to freelancing, and self-incorporating, less scary.

Not only do I understand my choices better, but I also now understand the different structures for businesses and their tax responsibilities. Great distillation of information! The copies of tax forms in the back are also a great reference. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Be Known As The Expert In Your Field.......2007-10-15

I have read and re-read How to Position Yourself As the Obvious Expert: Turbocharge Your Consulting or Coaching Business Now!. I have implemented many of the recommendations with terrific results. The book also covers all aspects of establishing expert status including the need to give back to help others. If you are looking for THE source to help you increase your expert status, I recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars So Much information you could never use it all!.......2007-08-28

This incredible book gives you almost all the information you need to position yourself as the expert on anything. The main theme revolves around the fact that once you write a book, self promotion or getting publicity is ten times easier. "People throw away business cards but they hold onto books forever." What is awesome is that even if you hate writing, they give you lots of ways to motivate yourself to do it. And they tell you how to break it down into bite size pieces and even show you alternatives if you simply refuse to write a book. What this book gave me that was most invaluable was actually the reverse of what I expected. It taught me..........I am not ready nor knowledgable enough to position myself as an expert because I am not willing to do the easy things they give you to do. What a revelation. In fact I bought the book 3 months ago and still am only 3/4 of the way through it, and I am the kind of guy who reads a book in 2 days. This is a complete college course in one book. I am a semi-professional stock market trader and can show one how to make a living trading stocks, but I cannot yet write a book about it so I know my career as a public speaker, consultant and software developer will have to wait. Now I dont have to beat myself up anymore.

The authors bring out an important point-an expert needs a "body of work" to show on demand, sell and prove credibility. This is not a get rich quick book. Thanks to this book, I now know I have another 2 years of research and experience before I am ready to say I am an expert. But what's great, is they show you that once you "are" truly an expert, they give you the map how to proceed and its so simple it is amazing, even if you are an introvert. In fact, I recommend that if you are so averse to making phone calls or introducing yourself to anyone or writing a book but you are an expert..........go partners with someone and have "them' read this great book. The only thing this book doesnt have is methods to find people to share the steps with you, motivate you like a coach or business partner and collaborate on writing the book and the other steps. That would have made it 100% complete. That is what a loner like myself needs. But all in all......5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars The Path To Becoming The Obvious Expert Has Been Revealed.......2007-08-02

This book is a step by step guidebook to positioning your expertise becoming the obvious expert in your industry. It is practical in every way. Anyone who takes action and does what is outlined according to this excellent roadmap will see results. One of the few books which is truly actionable.

5 out of 5 stars Well done book!.......2007-04-04

you this outstanding information. I just glanced at

Enjoy it!

5 out of 5 stars Without question the BEST Labor Economics text ever!.......2002-12-19

This is truly an amazing work, which shows so many models of labor market phenomena at the undergraduate level that an undergraduate's economics education is incomplete without it. This book is essential reading for both undergraduates and policymakers who want to learn labor economics, economics in general, or have a deeper understanding of public policy issues. The best features are its unmatched explanations of human capital models, labor market discrimination models, and labor union models -- which will change the way you think of these issues and give deeper understanding. The book is both concise, deep, a quick and fun read, and makes Nobel-prize winning material accessible to any undergraduate or policy maker.

4 out of 5 stars Absolutely Worth Reading.......2007-08-23

The book was full of practical and extremely useful examples. Easy to pick up and put down and digest in short bursts. Easy to focus on specific areas of concern -- not a textbook. It generated ideas and provided insight about how the interviewer thinks... well worth the investment.

4 out of 5 stars Informative book, got a job right after reading it..........2007-03-08

Excellent book. The information was there and straight to the point. It was an easy read. I don't know if you will be able to use all the questions (because I couldn't) but I was able to find a good number of them. Also, had an interview with a major software company (guess) and they were very impressed with the questions. Went on to the 2nd round interviews. :-)

5 out of 5 stars A must have that'll give you an edge.......2006-12-09

In the world of job-seekers there are job-interviewers. Most of job-interviewers are bad because:
1) They were summoned at the last minute to interview you and didn't even read your resume
2) They have no interviewing skills and have no ideas about (a) what they are looking for and (b) how to ask questions
3) They just don't care of being good at what they do since the odds are in their favors and that there are no negative ramifications if they're not as good as they can be.

This make a lot of job-interviewers throw questions at you. Just because they don't know what to ask or simply because it is intellectually more difficult to come up with a good probing questions.

I have some of these guys ask if you have a question and then ask again and again and again.

They are putting the burden on you to talk, but at the same they just surrender the control of the interview to you. This is your opportunity to shine, and this excellent book will help you do just that.

The more time you spend reading and memorizing questions, the better your interviewing skills will be. The structure of the book is excellent and the way questions are structure makes it easy to use the book as a reference even when you're taking an interview on the phone!

This gave me an edge, and I've impressed more than one interviewers with my questions. If you do your research ahead of time and demonstrate that you have a good the knowledge of the company and its industry, there's no reason for you not to perform well.

A must have in your personal library.

3 out of 5 stars A lot of fluff.......2005-08-13

Much of this book is fluff. He spends a lot of ink on things a reasonable person would never say or do at an interview. Also, many of his "serious" question seem ill advised.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Practical.......2005-08-09

I was waiting in line at the college bookstore, (buying a textbook), and this book was prominently featured. I thumbed through and was impressed at the straightforwardness of the questions. Making a list from these questions will, no doubt, give the impression on an interview, that you are focused, serious and organized. A worthwhile investment.
