    Book Description

Modern marketing techniques in industrialized countries cannot be implemented without segmentation of the potential market. Goods are no longer produced and sold without a significant consideration of customer needs combined with a recognition that these needs are heterogeneous. Since first emerging in the late 1950s, the concept of segmentation has been one of the most researched topics in the marketing literature. Segmentation has become a central topic to both the theory and practice of marketing, particularly in the recent development of finite mixture models to better identify market segments.
This second edition of Market Segmentation updates and extends the integrated examination of segmentation theory and methodology begun in the first edition. A chapter on mixture model analysis of paired comparison data has been added, together with a new chapter on the pros and cons of the mixture model. The book starts with a framework for considering the various bases and methods available for conducting segmentation studies. The second section contains a more detailed discussion of the methodology for market segmentation, from traditional clustering algorithms to more recent developments in finite mixtures and latent class models. Three types of finite mixture models are discussed in this second section: simple mixtures, mixtures of regressions and mixtures of unfolding models. The third main section is devoted to special topics in market segmentation such as joint segmentation, segmentation using tailored interviewing and segmentation with structural equation models. The fourth part covers four major approaches to applied market segmentation: geo-demographic, lifestyle, response-based, and conjoint analysis. The final concluding section discusses directions for further research.

This is an excellent book for getting a grip on quantitative market segmentation methods. It is a bit murky in places, but definately is one of the more advanced books on the subject.

I recommend it, but with reservation for those who are not up to speed in statistical analysis.

    Book Description

Linear Programming: Foundations and Extensions is an introduction to the field of optimization. The book emphasizes constrained optimization, beginning with a substantial treatment of linear programming, and proceeding to convex analysis, network flows, integer programming, quadratic programming, and convex optimization.

The book is carefully written. Specific examples and concrete algorithms precede more abstract topics. Topics are clearly developed with a large number of numerical examples worked out in detail.

Moreover, Linear Programming: Foundations and Extensions underscores the purpose of optimization: to solve practical problems on a computer. Accordingly, the book is coordinated with free efficient C programs that implement the major algorithms studied:

-The two-phase simplex method; -The primal-dual simplex method; -The path-following interior-point method; -The homogeneous self-dual methods.

In addition, there are online JAVA applets that illustrate various pivot rules and variants of the simplex method, both for linear programming and for network flows. These C programs and JAVA tools can be found on the book's webpage: . Also, check the book's webpage for new online instructional tools and exercises that have been added in the new edition.

    5 out of 5 stars Professor Robert Freund's review.......2004-04-30

This is a much more detailed one as compared to the other two and was penned by MIT ORC Professor Robert Freund.

Summary. This book presents a thoroughly modern treatment of linear programming that achieves a healthy balance between theory, implementation, computation, and between the simplex method and interior-point methods. It's most novel feature is that it is written in a delightful and refreshing conversational style, that bespeaks the author's teaching style and relaxed wit. It is a pleasure to read: students will find the book to be friendly and engaging, while professors will find in the book a wealth of teaching material, nicely organized and packaged for classroom use. The book is also meant to be used in conjunction with a public-available website that contains software for various algorithms, additional exercises, and demos of algorithms.
The need for new linear programming textbooks. The world of linear programming has changed dramatically in the last ten years. For one thing, the incredible changes in computer technology have made it easy to solve truly huge LPs, and routine LP problems solve in fractions of a second even on a personal computer. As a result, the study of linear programming algorithms is of less interest to the casual student. (In a similar vein, we usually do not teach students how to efficiently compute square roots; we simply presume they can press the right buttons on their calculator.) On the other hand, because we can now solve truly gigantic linear programs, issues of computer implementation, numerical stability, and software architecture, etc., are as important for the serious optimizer as is, say, duality theory. Furthermore, the development and recognition of the importance of interior point methods has changed the landscape of linear programming significantly, so that linear programming is no longer synonymous with the simplex method, and a modern treatment of LP must also present an in-depth treatment of the most important interior point methods.

Vanderbei's book is thoroughly modern. Vanderbei's book is completely up-to-date. Aside from a nice treatment of the simplex method, it also contains a very up-to-date treatment of interior point methods, including the homogeneous self-dual formulation and algorithm (which might soon become the dominant algorithm in practice and theory). It contains extensive material on issues of implementation of both the simplex algorithm and interior point algorithms. A politician might call it a book for the 21st century.

Vanderbei's book has many novel features. This book is quite different from most other textbooks on LP in a number of important ways. For starters, the standard form of a linear program in the book is the symmetric form of the problem (max c^T x | Ax <= b, x >= 0), as opposed to the usual form (min c^T x | Ax=b, x >= 0). This difference allows for an easier treatment of duality, and allows one to see the geometry of linear programming more easily as well. The symmetric form also makes it easier to set up the homogeneous self-dual interior point algorithm. However, this form has the drawback that discussions of bases, basic feasible solutions, and some of the mechanics of the simplex method are all a bit more awkward. (The book uses the language of dictionaries to describe the essential information in a simplex method iteration.) The book has more of a focus on engineering applications than does the more typcial LP textbook (which tend to rely on business problems). For example, there is a nice chapter on optimization of engineering structures such as trusses. The book gives a very broad treatment of interior point methods, including several topics that are not usually found in textbooks such as the homogeneous self-dual formulation and algorithm, quadratic programming via interior point methods, and general convex optimization via interior point methods.

These novel features are good in that the author has clearly tried to be innovative and to build an LP text from the ground up, without regard for past texts.

Some Nice Features. There are some particularly nice features in the book. The book contains a much-simplified variant of the Klee-Minty polytope that allows for a more straightforward proof that the simplex method can visit exponentially many extreme points. In addition to proving strong duality, the book also presents Tucker's strict complementarity theorem, which has become important in the new view of sensitivity analysis, optimal partitions, and interior point methods. The book also contains a nice treatment of the steepest edge pivot rule, which has recently emerged as an important component in speeding up the performance of the simplex algorithm. In the treatment of interior point methods, the author spends very little time on polynomial time bounds and guarantees (as a theorist, I like to see this material), instead adding value by discussing important computational and implemention issues, including ordering heuristics, strategies for solving the KKT system by Newton's method, etc. The book sometimes has an engineer's feel for the proofs, which is good for students but is a bit frustrating to hard-core math types such as myself. There are many instances where the proof is just a proof via an example. This is consistent with the conversational and informal style of the text, and this informality spills over into the mathematics on occasion.

This book has style. As mentioned earlier, the book has a wonderfully appealing conversational style. While the author does not purposely go out of his way to be cute and corny, he succeeds in leaving the reader grinning with his humor. There are some passages that are downright funny, but the style succeeds mostly by default. One section on the issue of modeling the anchoring of truss design problems is called Anchors Away, the subsection on updating factorizations to reduce fill-in is aptly called Shrinking the Bump. And there is the hint of a racy discussion of an application of Konig's Theorem involving boys and girls that the curious reader might enjoy.

Overall, I greatly enjoyed reviewing this book, and I highly recommend the book as a textbook for an advanced undergraduate or master's level course in linear programming, particularly for courses in an engineering environment. In addition, the book also is a good reference book for interior point methods as well as for implementation and computational aspects of linear programming. This is an excellent new book.

      Book Description

Organizational science has never been a fully integrated discipline. Traditionally, organizational research has been conducted from three distinct points of view--the organization, the group, and the individual--although it is clear that processes occurring across all levels of an organization affect the behavior of individuals, groups, and organizations as a whole. This fragmentation has encouraged the proliferation of separate disciplines, theories, and approaches. But in this volume, two dozen experts convince readers to consider multilevel analysis in the study of virtually all phenomena that occur within organizations. By illuminating top-down, bottom-up, and A-level processes and effects within an organization, the contributors bridge the gap between macro and micro approaches with a single unified theory.

Drawing from the writings of John Dewey, Leading Through the Quagmire advocates his notion that democracy is an appropriate ethic to respond to the diverse interests, needs, and values in conflict in educational settings. Moreover, it proposes an inquiry method to harness democratic ethics for engaging in ethical deliberation and conflict resolution. This book provides the foundation for understanding ethical tensions as well as the methods and applications to reason through them. Stories and examples are provided that enable readers to understand terms such as utilitarianism, ethical tensions, religious attitudes, and eco-feminism in meaningful ways.

Ludwig von Mises published his first book in 1912 ("Theory of Money and Credit") and his final book - "The Ultimate Foundation of Economic Science" - in 1962 (although he continued to write articles until near the end of his incredibly productive life).

In "The Ultimate Foundation", von Mises returns to one of his central concerns: the foundation of economic theories. According to von Mises, the principles of economic thought are "a priori." In fact, they are a "subset" of more basic principles of human action. Von Mises called the study of human action "praxiology." According to Mises, the a priori categories "are the mental equipment by dint of which man is able to think and to experience and thus to acquire knowledge." [p. 18.] It is these categories which provide order and regularity to man's understanding. The category of human action is: "Man acts because he is dissatisfied with the state of affairs as it prevails in the absence of his intervention." [p. 3.] Further axioms follow logically from this axiom. [p. 45.] The principles of economics are therefore deductive. On the other hand, the principles of the physical sciences are inductive. The error of positivism is to apply the principles of the physical sciences to economics, where they are not applicable. Economics is closer to mathematics than it is to chemistry.

It's hard to summarize this book. Von Mises deals with a large number of topics in a relatively small number of pages. These include evolution, Marxism, theism, the use of statistics, and methodological individualism. Yet what shines through is von Mises' love of economics and his belief that the teachings of economics - which is to say free enterprise - is the key to increasing man's standard of living and promoting social cooperation.

Interestingly, von Hayek - Mises' best known student -- also returned to methodology in his final book, "The Fatal Conceit." While von Mises remained a rationalist until the end, Hayek drifted toward a more empirical approach to social and economic thought. It would make an interesting study to compare these two works. Joseph Salerno touches on some of these points in his essay "Mises as Social Rationalist" in Herbener, ed., "The Meaning of Ludwig von Mises."

          Book Description

In 1958, Stanford University Press published Studies in the Mathematical Theory of Inventory and Production (edited by Kenneth J. Arrow, Samuel Karlin, and Herbert Scarf), which became the pioneering road map for the next forty years of research in this area. One of the outgrowths of this research was development of the field of supply-chain management, which deals with the ways organizations can achieve competitive advantage by coordinating the activities involved in creating products—including designing, procuring, transforming, moving, storing, selling, providing after-sales service, and recycling. Following in this tradition, Foundations of Stochastic Inventory Theory has a dual purpose, serving as an advanced textbook designed to prepare doctoral students to do research on the mathematical foundations of inventory theory and as a reference work for those already engaged in such research.

The author begins by presenting two basic inventory models: the economic order quantity model, which deals with “cycle stocks,” and the newsvendor model, which deals with “safety stocks.” He then describes foundational concepts, methods, and tools that prepare the reader to analyze inventory problems in which uncertainty plays a key role. Dynamic optimization is an important part of this preparation, which emphasizes insights gained from studying the role of uncertainty, rather than focusing on the derivation of numerical solutions and algorithms (with the exception of two chapters on computational issues in infinite-horizon models).

All fourteen chapters in the book, and four of the five appendixes, conclude with exercises that either solidify or extend the concepts introduced. Some of these exercises have served as Ph.D. qualifying examination questions in the Operations, Information, and Technology area of the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Review of the Stochastic Inventory Theory.......2007-02-13

This book provides a good path to learn the theory of stochastic inventory control. The first few chapters and the appedices are pretty useful.

4 out of 5 stars Stochastic Inventory Mathematical Formulations.......2007-01-12

This book is not suitable for practitioner looking for methodologies on how to solve real-world stochastic inventory problems. However, it is suitable for someone interest on mathematical formulations, research...etc.; perhaps a graduate IE/OR student working on inventory models.

4 out of 5 stars A great overview of stocahstic inventory theory........2004-09-12

Begining from early day in 1950, the Inventory theory is mathematically rich and widely applicable field of Operations Research. This books provides an excellent overview of the development in this direction so far. It teaches many very important concept without getting tedious in technical details. This also serves as a very good text for students interested in learning dynamic programming and structured policies. This book falls short of (my) expectations as its approach in describing the problem solving is very legality oriented. In other words, though this informs a reader why certain things are true by presenting mathematical proofs, it doesn't tell how do one arrives at the proof. However there are very few books which really do that.

5 out of 5 stars Practical, deep, and complete.......2006-11-13

This book is an excellent introduction and advanced resource for all those that wish to be a marketing research professional (or to those that just want to understand it). The authors present in-depth explanations of the field's theory populated with day-to-day examples.

I have read it attentively more than once and it was a very useful resource for two courses in my masters: 'Research methods in markets and in organizations' and 'Data Analysis in Marketing'. In both courses, the Professors were really weak, and I learned most of the topics thanks to the book. Some of the themes treated in the book are:

Part 1: Marketing Research, the Research Process, and Problem definition. Part 2: Determine Research Design. Part 3: Design Data-Collection Method and Forms. Part 4: Sample Design and Data Collection. Part 5: Analysis and Interpretation of Data. Part 6: The Research Report.

The book fits academic as well as industry readers and the content justifies the price.

5 out of 5 stars Marketing Research from a Project Based Perspective.......2004-06-29

This is the new edition of the book we used in the marketing research course at the Michigan Business School. It was great then and is even better now that they have tightened it up and slimmed it down a bit. It reads clearly, is focused, and doesn't pull any punches about the benefits, tradeoffs, and limitations of the various problems and methods involved in this subject.

Rather than focusing on decision support systems or marketing information systems, this book is focused on a project based approach. The authors help you recognize a problem, how to formulate it clearly, present it to decision makers for approval, designing the research to be done, data design and collection methods, they offer sample designs which is very helpful. They then do a fabulous job on data analysis and conclude by showing you how to present a proper research report.

There are several helpful appendices providing statistical values for those calculator based problems, but, really, who doesn't use a spreadsheet or SPSS or some similar package anymore?

There is also a glossary, a subject index, and an author index.

This is a standard text on the subject, and it is terrific.

5 out of 5 stars Expensive but worth every penny!.......2000-08-24

This is a huge work of marketing research, both in terms of volume and importance. Although intended as a grounding in the foundations of market research, the book takes you further than that. As a result I was using it as a text at post-graduate level.

The book sets out to explain how to: Formulate your problem. Determine your research design. Design your collection method and forms. Design your sample and collect the data. Analyse and interpret the data. Prepare your research report.

It is then subdivided into sub sections. I was particularly impressed with the section on ethics, which was so clearly laid out that I used it as a guide when writing a pure ethics paper.

The book is amply supplied with examples and case studies to illustrate the text and make it useful in a more practical sense.

All in all a clear, accessible, well laid out and well indexed textbook.

5 out of 5 stars A complete detailed theoritical and analytical book.......1998-03-21

An excellent work both theory and analysis. Provides an insight about the math requirments for the Marketing Researcher. In certain areas it gives the basic ideas - pp 752,753 - Fig.13.1 Histogram and Frequency Polygon of Incomes of Families in Car Ownership study. The Preface states- this edition, is designed to avoid such extremes by providing the student with a thorough treatment of the important concepts, both simple and complex - This aspect is proved in every section of the book. Really it will help the student to develop their creativie and analytical marketing skills. A very good work.
