The moral case for the free market.......2007-09-14
For anyone interested in an economic case for capitalism, this is not the right book - Rand was a philosopher, not an economist (in spite of her sound understanding of economic theorems.) However, for anyone interested in a moral defence of the system and an understanding of its intellectual history and opponents, this is a vital piece of work. Rand includes essays on voluminous topics, such as the gold standard, distortions of what actually happened during the Industrial Revolution, the proper role of government (I disagree with her on this), and so on. It is essential to understand that Rand was not a corporate shill, nor did she approve of the status quo - to the contrary, she strongly opposed the notion of corporate welfare and the like, and believed in a free market economy. Unfortunately, her adulation of big business gave ample ammunition to her critics. She replicates her essay on the rights of individuals toward the end of the book, which is in itself an excellent read. Taken in conjunction with The Virtue of Selfishness, this work will spur the youthful mind into further inquiry on the philosophical origins and defences of laissez-faire.
AMAZON! PLEASE READ THIS.......2007-07-17
Can you please take down that disgraceful "editorial review" you've allowed to creep its slimy way onto this site (and somehow barnes and nobles as well? who is pushing this stuff?). It is a smear on this book's page, and frankly it makes your site look tawdry and muckraking.
Unless of course, you posted that review to get all of these wonderful reviews defending the author of this book from attack by its own salesman.
Take that review down and replace it with something neutral at the very least.
Really, its almost criminal.
Very well written book about capitalism and democracy.......2007-04-06
Although this book was written many years ago, it rings true for today's issues. The book is made up of multiple (25 or so) mini essays, each about 5-10 pages long.
The book has a clear and logical philosophy that is consistent. Its' basic premise is that pure capitalism is the first and only moral system for man. This is because capitalism equals freedom which frees a man from coercive oppression, and that man can only create wealth and new ideas when free to use his mind. The book states that the US briefly came close to pure capitalism in the 1700 and 1800s, but is now heading to fascism, as the state leaves property in private ownership, but the state controls output and use of the private property.
This book is the best I've read in several years, because it helped me unify my outlook on several fronts (political, economic, legal, social, etc) into one grand, consistent theory. I think this book will appeal to liberals and conservatives alike. Both are damned in this book by Rand, but I think the left, right, and center will recognize parts of Rand's philosophy that are dear to them too.
Read it for yourself to see, the book is cheap.
Propaganda?.......2007-04-06
The only "outlandish piece of propaganda" about this book is the Library Journal's unabashed hit-piece pseudo-review of it on this website. The essence of capitalism is a political-economic system based on individual rights where all property is owned privately. If you wish to engage in thought about the authentic meaning of capitalism, read Ayn Rand's articles in this book, then if you decide to reject capitalism for statism, do so with the full knowledge of what capitalism is and be prepared to take the consequences for selling your soul.
greenspan.......2007-04-05
this book with its essays by greenspan show a good example of a guy who used to fight against courruption & the federal reserve and then sold out to those who battled against.
Our money was taken from us in the middle of the night by corrupt bankers. The federal Reserve is bogus.

Book Description
Few names are more widely known than that of Theodore Roosevelt, so that in one sense any introduction is superfluous. But in this sense he is known chiefly as the "Rough Rider" of the Santiago campaign; whereas those who read this book will see that his experience as a volunteer officer in the war with Spain is only one incident in a life which has been singularly varied in thought and accomplishment and useful in many fields. In 1900 when American Ideals was originally published, Theodore Roosevelt was the governor of New York.
During the three years from 1894 to 1897 he wrote the greater part of the essays on political subjects which are printed in the volume of American Ideals. Here you will find his theory of politics, based on honesty, courage, never-ending hard work, and fair play; and coupled with these a certain measure of expediency which without sacrificing principle strives to get things done, and to accept the second best if what he considers the first best is not attainable; realizing that in a government of universal suffrage many minds must be consulted and a majority of them brought to the same conclusion before anything can be accomplished.
Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) was the 26th President of the United States (1901-1909). A Hero of the Spanish-American War, he served as governor of New York (1899-1900) and U.S. Vice President (September 1901) under William McKinley. In addition to holding the elective offices he was also a deputy sheriff in the Dakota Territory, Police Commissioner of New York City, U.S. Civil Service Commissioner, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, and Colonel of the Rough Riders, all by the age of 42, at which time he became the youngest man ever to hold the office of President. In 1906 he won the Nobel Peace Prize for this mediation in the Russo-Japanese War.
Book Description
The aggressively revised new edition of this best-seller provides a clear, concise, and comprehensive introduction to the ideas and ideals that shake and shape our political world.
Written with the firm belief that ideology is the driving force of nation-states, history, and politics, this innovative text covers the range of contemporary political ideologies, from the standard categories of liberalism, conservatism, and socialism to newly emerging ideological alternatives. Political Ideologies and the Democratic Ideal provides an accessible overview of the origin and development of these ideologies, and illustrates how each interprets democracy and freedom.
Customer Reviews:
Good Introduction.......2005-10-15
The authors make a noble effort to minimize bias and examine the various ideologies objectively. As a few of the negative reviews make clear, not everyone is satisfied with this book's objectivity. I would like to respectfully disagree and ask the reviewers to re-examine their own biases.

in good condition and received in a generally timely manner, but could've been done quicker
Poltical Ideologies as a textbook.......2005-09-30
I am currently using this book in a Honors American Political Science course at Georgia State University. This book is very informative and does not add superfluous information like most textbooks do. However, there are some terms in the text that we as a class have found to be a bit contradictory; such as the term "individual conservative". This seems to be an oxymoron and my professor actually contacted Ball who just basically dodged the question...
Terrible Excuse for P.I. Literature........2005-05-10
Just like it's companion book, this Political Ideologies textbook was blatantly biased. I find it mind-boggling that anyone could consider this a fair, ethical, and balanced treatment of the subjectmatter. Just like the other text, this book is filled with sweeping generalizations, liberal and left-wing indoctrination, and a severe lack of critical thought of ALL ideologies. I had to endure reading this book as well in a political science course, and it's a sure sign of the times. It's always those who claim to be the most "open-minded" who are in actuality, the least open-minded. I'm tired of the lip service and would actually appreciate it if authors like this would actually practice what they preach.
Instead of presenting all the material in a straight-forward manner, the authors take sides. This is extremely unethical writing. When presenting historical events and ideas it is practically crimminal to write a book like this with its extremely biased points-of-view. This book too, is filled with little breadth and little depth. Its not the side these authors are taking which irritates me, it's the fact that a side is taken at all. Extremely poor acedemcis here, and a complete lack of ethics here! Those who rate this book highly belie themselves as supportors of indocrination, instead of a fair treament of the materials represented. Not recommended at all.
As for the authors,..."I get it!" We know that you're hippies and that you spent your college days fighting against the War, and "the man", but when you start to write and act in the same manner as those you disagreed with, it's a case of the pot calling the kettle black!
Good and Terrible.......2004-08-26
I give this book 2.5 stars. It is good as describing certain things objectively, but these are few and far between. The rest of the book is filled with radical left-wing shenanigans that do nothing but discredit those who disagree with them. They do not show the evils of socialism; they misrepresent conservatism (even though I am NOT a conservative by ANY means); they do not show the true colors of feminism and environmentalism, etc. etc. etc. If you are a hard-core liberal that specializes in not listening to other side, then this is the book for you. If you are a centrist, undecided, or in any way religious, conservative, or anything of the sort, you will despise this book for its egregious flaws. Concerning conservatism as a subject of conversation here, I am not saying they are ALL wrong. They do find some good errors in it, but they generalize and generalize, until everyone that disagrees with radical liberalism is in their own little niche with they classify as being wrong (usually conservatism). According to this book, I am a conservative, and I am wrong. But I am NOT a conservative, and even if I were, MOST of the things they say about conservatives are misrepresented. So, I give this book 2.5 stars, half of a full 5, because it has quite a bit of good content. But overall, it is a waste of space.

School Book.......2007-07-19
It was a book for school. It is sometimes hard to follow but all in all it is well written
Book Description

Present readers with key selections from a wide array of original sources, from classic standards to newly emerging ideologies. A logical organization, introductions to each selection, and new explanatory notes make this book accessible and engaging. For those interested in political science and ideologies.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent essay collection.......2006-03-02
As a companion reader to Ideals and Ideologies, this reader is an excellent compostion of essays and writings that will challenge and encourage political thought. It is good for anyone wanting a broad overview of many different ideologies, rather than focusing on one in particular. It is historical so I recommend it for non-political readers as well. This work gives a good overview of the diverse ways in which men see government working and ruling in the affairs of men.
Book of Liberal Indoctrination.......2005-05-10
This book is woefully over-rated. Having read it in a political science class, this book was full of oversimplifications, sweeping generalizations, liberal indoctrination, and a-historical information. The breadth was terrible, as was the depth. The authors left numerous critical points out of the book. The fact that they didn't include a chapter on Zionism is proof of this. They also made sweeping generalizations about 9/11 and events which led to the Oklahoma City bombing. These authors are either completely inept historians, or they're blatantly taking sides. Either way, there's no excuse for the poor writing here. It's not necessarily what's written in the book, but what's left out! History cannot be "politically correct". If these authors really practiced ethics in their writing they would have presented ALL the information in a straight-forward unbiased manner, allowing the reader to come to his or her own conclusion. Truly dissapointing. Not recommended at all.
I Love This Reader.......2001-07-27
I reread this wonderful collection of seminal works of political philosophy often. I used it in my course on ideology. Students will find it challenging to work through, if you assign selections indescriminantly. That is why this reader is meant to complement an equally wonderful textbook written by the same authors. The scope here is awe-inspiring. We begin with Euripides and Pericles in the ancient Greece and end with the latest crypto ideological movements, such as feminism, animal rights activism, green politics, and the end of history thesis. I think that all selections are enlightening. This should be a must book for anyone specializing in political theory, intellectual history, or anyone who wants to understand or effectively employ ideological rhetoric. Great book.
A solid and strong collection of original works.......1999-06-01
The editors have done a good job of including most of the major areas of western political thought of the last two thousand years. A bit skimpy on classical works, but well grounded in more contemporary times and the foundational thought of American and Western democratic ideals. The contents have been edited to ensure that the message is not lost in prose, and the average reader should be able to enjoy the readings, also getting a clear sense of what the original author intended to say. Aimed at the Higher Education market it is a little pricey, but a buy for the shelf of anyone interested in this subjecr area.
Book Description
In this powerful and disturbing book, Rogers Smith traces political struggles over U.S. citizenship laws from the colonial period through the Progressive era and shows that throughout this time, most adults were legally denied access to full citizenship, including political rights, solely because of their race, ethnicity, or gender.

A REAL HISTORY.......2001-02-14
Civic Ideals is a book every american should read.Prof.Smith has demonstrated clearly how trough history the United States have had diferents meanings about the citizenship. In the case of Puerto Rico-the last colony of the world-we the Puerto Ricans have a second-class citizenship. The author sumarize very well our case with the insular cases and Balzac vs. People of Puerto Rico. Also Smith analize the legal debate in the Harvard Law Review, but do not mention the Yale Law Journal(Adams,Elmer B.,"The Causes and Results of Our War with Spain from a legal Standpoint."VII(1899),pag.119 and Parker,Le Roy,"The Constitution of Porto Rico",X (1901),pag.136.)and Columbia Law Review;Fuller,Paul,"Some Constitutional Questions Suggested by Recent Acquisitions"I(1901),pag.108).For people who want to know the real constitutional history of The United States this book is excellent. Is one of my favorites books.
A little dry.......2000-06-08
This is one of the few books that I have started and then quit part way through. I had to force myself to continue reading after about page 50 and then quit at 200. It was very dry content and read too much like a doctoral dissertation. In addition, assumptions were made about the readers knowledge of court cases related to civic rights.

a great analysis.......2002-01-30
This book was assigned to me by my professor. I did not believe the argument of the book at first when we went through it in class. But as we went through the semester, the argument that was made was built from chapter to chapter. I noticed that I was actually reading the book and that I could understand it well. It is a textbook but it is not like most textbooks. I learned a lot in the class and think that most of the argument in Justice Blind is correct. What I liked most about the book is that it is easy to read even though it has so many details about crime and criminal justice.
glad I ordered it.......2001-06-01
When I ordered Justice: Crimes, Trials, and Punishments by Dominick Dunne I saw the book, Justice Blind? It sounded interesting (even though it is an academic type book) so I ordered it.
Because I am not a student parts of the book were hard for me to read. Overall though it is still worth the money. The author argues that the criminal justice system is a massive failure. His book provides a ton of evidence and is fair.
I best like the way the author builds his argument from chapter to chapter. And the book is not written from an "expert" approach. He sounds like a normal person using normal language. Anyone who votes should read this book.
The Best Available.......2001-05-29
This book is simply superb.
Similar but much better than other great books such as The Politics of Injustice, What's Wrong with the Criminal Justice System, and The Rich Get Richer and the Poor Get Prison. If you like these books, you'll love Robinson's critical criminal justice text.
What sets this book aside from the rest is the author's detailed analysis of virtually every aspect of today's justice system. Robinson concludes that the justice system fails to do justice and reduce crime; he tells why and then goes beyond this and offers concrete suggestions for reform.
This book must have taken a long time to write! I am so glad I read it.
