4 out of 5 stars Rekindled love.......2005-04-09

For the first time in two years, Mark Saunders travels home for the
Christmas holiday. He brings fond memories of school teacher
Essence Monroe; she was the last woman to challenge his emotions and
he cannot get her out of his mind. Mark wants to show Essence in spite
of the time he has been gone, he has not forgotten her.

Essence is still upset with Mark, he did not contact her the entire
two years he was gone. Her broken heart is just beginning to heal,
and she is afraid to risk it again. Also Essence has a secret which
she does not want to share with Mark. When he finds out, he
immediately wants to do the right thing, but Essence thinks he is
doing it for the wrong reasons, so she refuses his advances. Essence
believes Mark is still the same shallow man who did not want a
commitment and who left without a decent goodbye. Mark has to
convince Essence that he is sincere in his efforts, but to do this
he must make the hardest decision of his life.

TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE by Angie Daniels, is a familiar story of love
lost and found, but she does it with just the right touch of emotions
to make the story a little different and a lot more embraceable. This
is a blissful read; a love for all time. (RAW Rating: 4.5)

4 out of 5 stars Helpful, but not budget........2007-09-25

I had a four month engagement, so this book was very helpful in organizing what needs to be done in such a short time. But it's definitely not for the budget wedding (it doesn't claim to be) - spending money to have other people do things is a time saver and can keep you from being too stressed during your engagement. This book has helpful charts to fill in and keep you organized, whether you are having a do-it-yourself kind of wedding or hiring lots of professionals. I would recommend this book to any bride to be, short engagement or long.

3 out of 5 stars OK, but not as helpful as I would have liked.......2007-06-16

To be fair, I did buy this book used so some of the information was outdated. There were a few items that were helpful and gave me good ideas but overall I thought that it should have been more useful to a person planning a wedding in 6 months or less. Most of the information just seemed to be practial information used as filler. And almost all of it was the same as the other guides I bought which were written for people with ages to plan their weddings.

4 out of 5 stars Smart and frugal tips.......2006-11-10

This book has been very useful in figuring out ways to mitigate the expense of planning a wedding quickly (I'm @ 5 months and counting!!) Without as much time to shop around, you need to get creative and this book does help. Some of the ideas are obvious, but there are enough you won't have thought of to make the purchase worth it. Written in a friendly, enjoyable style to make it a fun read.

5 out of 5 stars This is the book to buy!!!.......2006-05-09

When you are trying to plan a wedding in less than a year, this is definitely the book to buy. It is thorough, yet easy to read, and practical. Makes fast wedding planning do-able.

I have to say that when we started discussing marriage I went straight to the library and checked out 10 books. This was the only one I wanted to keep! She has great insight and its an easy read. I felt like I was getting tips from a seasoned professional and a friend. My mom picked it up too. Great book.

    Book Description

A collection of classic essays by two highly regarded scholars on the development of yoga and its rapport with other religious traditions.

Georg Feuerstein, one of the world's foremost scholars of yoga, and Jeanine Miller, long recognized for her insightful commentaries on the RgVeda, here pool their considerable talents in a look at the development of yogic thought across the ages and its similarities with the Christian mysticism of Meister Eckhart. Two of their essays included here?one concerning the essence of yoga and the other looking at the meaning of suffering in yoga?have long been singled out by indologists for correcting prevalent misconceptions and providing a conceptual framework for many of the subsequent studies in that field. The reprinting of these important essays in The Essence of Yoga gives new readers a chance to share some of the authors' earliest insights into yoga and their deep conviction that these discoveries are of the highest significance for a proper understanding of the human condition.

4 out of 5 stars Bedtime reading for philosophers.......2004-02-09

If you like philosophy and get turned by Yoga, this is a book for you. The chapters are pretty technical and full of yogic terminology, but the presentation is sound and endlessly fascinating. The book has my vote.

5 out of 5 stars Studies the early roots of yoga.......2000-01-30

If you are a fan of Georg Feuerstein's writings, this book resembles the Philosophy of Classical Yoga in that it is written for the more intermediate, advanced or scholarly yoga student as it reviews yoga's early roots in the Vedic tradition, while relating the study to the Christian mystic, Meister Eckhart. From her expertise in the Vedas, co-author Jeanine Miller offers her insights that help the Vedas come alive for the reader and realize how the yoga of today springs forth from a 5,000 year old tradition.

Mr. Schoch has been able to delve into the essence of the human soul without being biased through religion or a belief system. He is definately not partial to any one philosophy, but teaches us that all cultures and religion basically tells us the same thing about the human mind. He definately can be called a modern day Socrates. His observations of love and fear are enourmous and the effect that those two emotions have on our life are monumental. Wow!!

Manuel Schoch has developed a therapy to bring up back to what we truly are. This book gathers wisdom from multiple perspectives and traditions. It is bound to transform all those who come into contact with it.

    Book Description

This volume presents twenty-six essays that showcase the brilliant originality and range of economic thought that earned Hoover Institution senior fellow Gary S. Becker the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 1992. As the first published collection of Becker's papers, this selection offers an overview of the fundamental theries and unorthodox applications that inspired Milton Friedman to call Becker "one of the most creative economists of our generation" and concludes with the text of Becker's Nobel lecture, a personal survey of his work. Becker's significant contributions evolve from an economic approach to analyzing social issues that range beyond those usually considered by economists. By questioning assumptions taken for granted in most economic modeling. Becker sheds new light on previously unconnected and poorly understood social phenomena. He relies on this signular axiom: all actors in the social game are economic persons who maximize their advantages in different cost situations. In these essays, Becker studies persistent racial and sexual discrimination investment in human capital, crime and punishment, marriage and divorce, the family, drug addiction, and other apparently noneconomic dimensions of society. Significantly, Becker's findings not only shift huge problems that other social scientists once considered immovable but also stand up to empirical challenge.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars COMPILATION OF BECKER'S BEST WORKS.......2004-08-13

This is a compilation of Becker's most significant articles. Becker is one fo the most brilliant economists in the 20th century, taking the tools of economic analysis to other social sciences, especially sociology.

The articles have varied topics, including:
    - Economic analysis of marriage
    - Economic analysis of family size
    - Economic justification for altruism
    - Economic analysis of restaurant pricing patterns
    - Economic analysis of discrimination
    - Economic analysis of crime

It is a bit academic, since these are the original article he wrote for academic journals, but they are understandable since it is mostly concepts and not too many equations (though there are some). For the absolute beginner, this may be too advanced, so I would recommend The Economics of Life by Becker as well. If you have some knowledge of economics, I believe this would be a great choice. It shows how the rationality acquired in economics is applicable elsewhere, almost everywhere.

4 out of 5 stars Great Overview of the History of Christianity.......2006-05-30

The views expressed by Kung in this great critical analysis of Christianity are:

*There is no RIGHT and PERMANENTLY NORMATIVE way of doing theology.Rather, as he adopted T. Kuhn's view of paradigms, Kung argues that in the history of the Church we are able to detect five paradigms (i.e., constellations of beliefs, values, behaviors, teachings and emphases shared by members of a given community). Many elements of our faith today are not to be regarded as constants, but as variables of various ages, passed on through time (e.g., laments imposition of Thomism)

*The reform-oriented, democratic and progressive movements in the churches are GOOD (democratization is "a dynamic process of involvement of the greatest number of faithful in all matters concerning the organization of the church" p.724). Conversely, the conservative, restaurationist, counter-revolutionary forces within the churches are EVIL and must be opposed.

*The Roman system is oppressive and merciless.

*It is wrong of the Church to refuse dialogue with her critics The Church should not have condemned everything that she did, but rather dialogued with her opponents. (Yeah, right!)

*The Church should accommodate herself to the times, always, under any circumstance (quick, adopt a new paradigm!) p. 751

    *Theological minimalism:
1)In its essence, Christianity is Jesus Christ himself and his way, leading to God, and not:
a)an eternal idea ("love," "truth," "justice")
    b)a dogma
    c)a world view
    2) Jesus is, in his person, the embodiment of his "cause." This Jesus asks of his followers not worship or imitation, but personal discipleship: to adhere to him and to follow one's path in life according to his directions (e.g.: may God's will be done; ethical appeals for a radical humanism; radicalization of the Jewish ethos)
3)We must avoid "narrow christocentric views."
4)Kung rejects Jesus' pre-existence; upholds unity of Father and Son along Arian lines (i.e., unity is not a metaphysical unity, but rather a functional one. Jesus as God's envoy to men and as representative of men before God)
5)Jesus is never called "God" in the NT (p.103)
6)"Almost all" the ante-Nicean Fathers were subordinationists.
7)Fiercely opposes docetism and spiritualization, and metaphysics.
8)Council of Nicea as "prisoner" of totally alien concepts (p. 189)

    *Emphasis on praxis, tolerance, dialogue

The five paradigms outlined in his book are:
    1)Jewish-apocalyptic paradigm
No absolute hierarchy, uniform egalitarianism; hierarchy as diakonia; great role and participation of women. Church is a a number of presbyterally-led communities.Jesus as Messiah; Jerusalem as the center and focus of the Church.
Ebionites condemned by Ignatius of Antioch and Iraeneus.
We must distinguish between an evolutio contra and an evolutio secundum evangelium.
    2)Ecumenical-Hellenistic paradigm
End of charismatic church; development of professional episcopacy. Age of great councils: Nicea, Constantinople, Ephesus, Chalcedon. Hellenistic christological dogmas. Orthodoxy becomes paramount (discipline and discipleship become a distant second). Origen promotes the turn to the metaphysic. Development of monasticism, catechumenate, confirmation, veneration of saints, importance of baptism, virginity (instead of being seen as personal preference becomes the highest ideal). Development of the understanding of the historical-salvific mission of Christ.
    3)Medieval Roman Catholic paradigm
Augustine and notion of "true church" or "mother church". Compelle intrare. Reification of grace. Attacks Augustine (p. 300).Development of papacy (see the fraudulent pseudo-isidoran decretals) along absolutistic lines. Yes to papacy as primacy of service. No to papacy as:
    a)infallibility
    b)autocratic gvmt
    c)oppressive hierarchy
    d)autoritarianism
    e)secret procedures of Holy Office
Development of infant baptism; popular piety practices; private confession; Conciliarism: see the council of Constance's decree Haec sancta. Kung loves this one, for it subordinates even the pope to the authority of the council.. Romanization, clericalization, crusades.Issue of the investitures
    4)Protestant-evangelical paradigm
He claims that Luther had the NT behind him. Laments that Erasmus' "third way" was not followed.
The Church is not seen as the sacrament of salvation, but as the community of the regenerated believers.
    5)Modern paradigm
Celebrates Schleiermacher for cognitive value of feelings, inner dimension, value of experience.
Declaration of man's and citizen's rights (1789 modeled after US).Laments that Church did not dialogue with French revolution (you've got to be kidding me!!!)
Kung claims that the Church developed wrong reactions to modernity, lacking fair sense of perspective.

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2004-01-05

Kung's brilliance as a religious historian and a Christian theologian carry this erudite review of the paradigm shifts of Christianity over the past two millenium. It is not an easy read, as are none of his books, however, it is by far the most enlightening. It is clear why Pope John XXIII chose Kung to participate in Vatican II even though he was outside the curia. It is tragic that the great pope's followers repudiate Kung.

5 out of 5 stars Both a liberal education and a book of questions.......2003-08-28

Kung's book is a tour de force polemical - and yes, read it critically, in bite-sized chunks, think over each of his points before buying or rejecting anything. Kung will challenge and perhaps even surprise (shock?)you. Many will block out his words, because they question many pat, traditional beliefs that have become doctrine in Christian circles. But do not fail to appreciate the faith in (and deep love) of God exemplified in Kung's search for the real Christianity. Anyone looking to find Jesus and Christ in their Christian faith, to work toward returning the "Christ" to Christianity, and who is willing to think, ponder, re-consider and weigh, should read this book. In Kung we once again have one of the finest living minds at work in the field of theology. You may conclude to disagree with him on many points, but you will not find him shallow, or closed-minded. His courage to question marks him as a great Christian as well as a great Christian thinker. His books are stimulating and inspiring. But if you prefer a keeping a closed mind, skip this book.

5 out of 5 stars The essential Jesus Christ.......2002-04-15

What fascinates me more about Christianity is Jesus Christ himself. I agree with Kung when he says that the essence of christianity is the person of Jesus Christ.

I find Jesus Christ liberating, and I take his death and bodily ressuraction seriously. I take seriously His message of eternal love and redemption from sin. I take seriously His revelation. I look at Jesus for salvation. I see Jesus as the only Lawyer I, as a sinner, can count on, when I will be before the throne of the absolutely Holy and Just God. He has payed the price of my sins, through his death and ressurrection. Both historical and material facts.

Unfortunately, here I have to notice that Hans Kung hardly speaks about the Jesus Christ of the Gospel. For Kung, Jesus is more like a special man, who dared to live and die for his own convictions, not for us. He is the authentic and non alienated man of the german existentialists. For Kung Jesus seems to be, most of all, an example of faith and life, and not really the Way, the Truth and the Life. Kung seems at times to be too much influenced by theologians like Graaf, Welhausen and Bultmann, who used science to demythologize the Bible, instead of using the Bible to demythologize science. Man's fallible word is given more weight than God's infallible Word. This has severely damaged Hans Kung's christianity.

The fact is that in Jesus we have the strength to challenge the Popes and the Emperors of this world, along with dominant materialist, naturalistic and evolutionary ideologies and "scientific" paradigms. Because he rests more in german philosophy and theology than in the Bible, Hans Kung obliterates some of the essential parts of the christian message.

We also find in Jesus Christ the strenght to fight against the churches of this world. As John Locke, I believe that a church should be a free and voluntary society constituted by free and equal believers. An authoritarian church is not a christian church.

The church should be composed only by baptized believers. The christian faith should be one in which confession of Jesus as saviour should be followed by obedience to Jesus as Lord. This should apllly in the political, legal, economic, social, cultural, and academic spheres of life. A pure institutional, sacramental or national church is at odds with the ecclesiae from the New Testament.

Free and equal believers in the church make good free and equal citizens (John Rawls) in the political community. They will know to promote their views in society not through coercion but by means of legitimate persuasion, always respecting the equal rights of non christian and non-religious.

Each christian has different gifts, talents and functions, but is endowed with the same privileges and responsabilities. I think this is the only church compatible with the essence of christianity.

In my view, while very critical, Hans Kung still expects to much from hierarquical and authoritarian christianity. I think the only true hope for the future is in a decentralized, non-hierarquical, all transparent, truly democratic and free church system.

A structure and culture of cover-up and secrecy, even when serious crimes are being commited, is not christian.

A democratic and transparent church can help building a democratic and transparent society.

I doubt Hans Kung will be able to come up with something really new here. For a reformer, he remains too catholic.

3 out of 5 stars Painfully honest but equally controversial.......2002-01-09

Kung attempts to break down, but certainly not simplify, the complex history of Christianity through the analysis of five historical paradigms. Despite some ambiguity, his work is a fine summary of the past two thousand years and I cautiously recommend picking up a copy at the nearest bookstore. Like with anything though the reader should resist the temptation to buy into Kung's theology and analysis "wholesale". His intention is clearly sincere and ecumenical, but the weak mind will renounce the fundamentals of Christianity altogether after reading Kung. My advice: stay alert and fine tune all critical thinking skills. Address each of Kung's "questions for the future" with questions of your own and know when it's time to take a break from reading.

Melinda Rucker Haynes' highly acclaimed Trust saga concludes with Essence of Trust, the final book in the trilogy.

This book picks up some years after Breach of Trust, after two legendary Samurai swords have disappeared and changed the lives of five incredible people, among others. Mike and Dorel Gabrielli's son Marty is now at the cusp of manhood, and only beginning to come into the powers he has inherited through multiple lifetimes, one of which was Dorel's beloved grandfather. Rian Farsante and Jonathan "Spence" Spencer, soulmates who are loyal friends to the Gabriellis have been torn apart by Spence's lust for power which has led him to use his abilities for the dark side. All of them have been affected by the power infused in any wielder of the swords, their lives irreparably changed.

Ancient legend, dating far back in Egyptian history, if not farther, speaks of the coming of the One, a powerful Essence that will control the world. Whether that control is used to destroy or to heal the world as we know it remains to be determined. Ian Stoddard, an extremely strong psychic spy for whom Mike, Spence, and Rian all worked with at one time, believes Marty to be the One, and seeks to use Marty's powers to take over the world. Time is running out as all players, good or bad, race to defeat an evil stronger than any of them can imagine; that is at the beginning, the very heart of the mystery of the swords. Can all of them find their destiny and use their powers for what they are meant to before this evil consumes them, possibly even costing some their current life?

As with the previous two books in the saga, the story line is very complex due to the very nature of its reincarnation plotline. However, in this book, less focus is placed on past lives, though they do have an integral role, with the focus this time being on the here and now... and what is to come. One will find this book is not one to be rushed through, but is meant to be savored and read slowly so as to grasp the true meaning of the story and the symbolic nature of so many things, or people, found within. Many questions will be answered, and yet a few are left hanging, perhaps for effect, or something more? Readers must pick up this book for themselves to make that determination. Also be forewarned, there are multiple, totally shocking, plot twists that will make readers gasp aloud in disbelief and shout "that can't happen that way!"

The previous two stories were more of an action tale, with an underlying love story. Though the undercurrent of a love story is evident here, it is not as strong as in the previous two stories, in this reviewer's opinion, but it is most definitely there. There are actually several different kinds of love, to include romance, experienced by the characters, which makes this an even more powerful story then the previous two. Readers will feel Rian's pain as she watches her beloved Spence fall deeper into the dark arts, knowing there is not much she can do to help him. A familial kind of love is evident here as well, between the Gabriellis and Rian and Spence. Marty, though showing the typical behavior of a young boy his age, also has an underlying wisdom of the ages, that will amaze and captivate readers, making them wonder how he knows so much for one so young. How everyone comes together in the paths Destiny has chosen for them will engross the reader right through to the very last page of the book.

Essence of Trust indeed ends this chapter in a strong saga, but ends it in such a way to give one hope that maybe, just maybe, if destiny is kind, we may at some future date get to cross our paths with those friends... and enemies... found between these pages. Only the fates know for certain.

5 out of 5 stars exciting paranormal fantasy .......2005-06-04

Psychologist Rian Farsante begins having visions that her godson eleven year old Marty and his parents Michael and Dorel Gabrielli are in danger form her former employee, mentor, and lover Ian Stoddard of Datascape Systems. She calls her former partner and her last lover Jonathan Spencer to ask if Marty is okay, but instead of concern he demands she come back to him to create the Sword of Balance that he swears he will only use for good. Rian refuses having left her beloved because he is turning to the dark and the Swords of Balance that he and Ian covet will destroy his soul.

Rian's vision turns out truer than she even dreamed as Michael and Dorel are murdered and Marty is abducted. Deciding rescuing Marty is top priority; Rian agrees to partner with her soulmate risking her life and soul by doing so. As the danger mounts with Ian having the support of the evil God Anubis, Jonathan pressures her to create a new Swords of Balance, but she remains reluctant as she does not trust her beloved even as Ian psychically tries to coerce her to return to him.

ESSENCE OF TRUST is an exciting paranormal fantasy that grips readers once the triangular relationships between Rian, Jonathan, and Ian and their abilities surface. Rian is the key to the story line as the two men from her past demand she join their side of the dispute, but she distrusts both of them. Though complex and overloaded with otherworldly elements, fans of modern day fantasy thrillers can trust Melinda Rucker Haynes for providing an enchanting tale.
