Book Description

In this absorbing tale, you watch the timeless principles of servant leadership unfold through the story of John Daily, a businessman whose outwardly successful life is spiraling out of control. He is failing miserably in each of his leadership roles as boss, husband, father, and coach. To get his life back on track, he reluctantly attends a weeklong leadership retreat at a remote Benedictine monastery.
To John's surprise, the monk leading the seminar is a former business executive and Wall Street legend. Taking John under his wing, the monk guides him to a realization that is simple yet profound: The true foundation of leadership is not power, but authority, which is built upon relationships, love, service, and sacrifice.
Along with John, you will learn that the principles in this book are neither new nor complex. They don't demand special talents; they are simply based on strengthening the bonds of respect, responsibility, and caring with the people around you. Perhaps this is why The Servant has touched readers from all walks of life—because its message can be applied by anyone, anywhere—at home or at work.
If you are tired of books that lecture instead of teach; if you are searching for ways to improve your leadership skills; if you want to understand the timeless virtues that lead to lasting and meaningful success, then this book is one you cannot afford to miss.

2 out of 5 stars Poor allocation of regurgitated ideas.......2007-10-03

The only reason this book earns a second star is because the book chose good quotes and philosophies to review. This book could of been better had the Author left out all the characters in the daily classes and created a more personal relationship between the main character and Simeon where they explored Simeon's priciples deeper and with more theoretical applications and systems. But, it didn't and this book was painfully slow at times while on the tangents of the attendees of the leadership class. I really don't know how this book got such a high rating and waited for it to pick up the entire time I read it and it didn't. My opinion: Don't waste your time and money, stick with the classics - and this book it certainly no classic.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book.......2007-09-14

This is simply one of the best books I have ever read. I would place it in my top ten category, and I plan to read it again. James C. Hunter ties information together from several different fields of knowledge and areas of expertise. I plan to recommend this book to those I love and to those with whom I have influence. It was recommended to our class as optional reading by a professor of School Leadership in a doctoral class I am taking, and even though this book was simple and easy to read, the information contained in it was more valuable than the information I have obtained in some classes, where I spent an entire semester. Don't let the simple writing, storybook-style fool you- There are huge nuggets of wisdom in this book.

5 out of 5 stars True servant leadership........2007-07-18

This book reads easily with a wonderful story of true servant leadership. Recommended for those in leadership or management roles.

5 out of 5 stars Great Gift for Leadership Colleagues.......2007-07-13

This book has been a staple for new and tenured managers to communicate two very important aspects of leadership: 1. It's not about you; it's about others. 2. Balance in your life. No greater leader ever exemplified this better than Jesus. You don't have to be religious or spiritual to see the clear message this book sends.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for work!.......2007-06-08

I read this book approximately 5 years ago as a loan from a friend and it has such great concepts it changed my perspective on many things in my life. It had such an impact, I decided to purchase so that I would own it and re-read it. It was almost better the second time around. It reminded of the background of many concepts I learned and now I have picked up on things I missed the first time. Definitely a great book for anyone to read whether for business or personal application - since as parents we must lead our children to success!

Book Description

The Essence of Leadership is book three in this image driven, inspirational, motivational series. In Mac's first two books, the focus was on what it takes to obtain true success in life and how to achieve the right kind of attitude. Both previous books used inspirational stories and described the importance of how to achieve personal progress through character traits and godly living-all of this reinforced by the power of inspiring and striking imagery. In The Essence of Leadership, Mac takes a similar approach to direct readers to achieve personal success through integrity, ethics, loyalty, persistence, faith matters, and many more character traits that form the leader within a person.

5 out of 5 stars A Leading Promoter of Inspirational Leadership Inspires and Instructs.......2007-09-14

Author Mac Anderson is the founder of Successories, Inc., billed as "the leader in designing and marketing products for motivation and recognition." The author here combines the compelling photographs and quotations for which Successories is well known with wisdom from both his extensive business experience and his reading of other leadership gurus.

A good leader, the author says, should "walk the talk; keep it simple and keep it real; celebrate successes; know that courage matters; keep hope alive; take responsibility; develop a 'service attitude'; aim for the heart; and make a difference when wherever" possible.

"If you throw your heart over the fence, the rest will follow," the author says illustrating the virtue of Heartpower. "Don't be afraid to go out on a limb," the author says illustrating the virtue of Risk. "That's where the fruit is." "Integrity does not blow in the wind or change with the tide," the author says in promiting Integrity. "It is the inner image of our true selves."

Other virtues the author promotes are LEADERSHIP ("By the work, one knows the workman," Jean de la Fontaine said), ATTITUDE ("Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference),DISCOVERY ("Leaders are like eagles," said Henry David Thoreau. "They don't flock, you find them one at a time"), GOALS ("Dream big dreams but never forget that realistic short-term goals are the keys to your success"), KINDNESS ("The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or touched," Helen Keller said. "They must be felt in the heart"), OPTIMISM ("Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement," Helen Keller said), VISION ("...The music makers...the dreamers of dreams...are the movers and shakers of the world forever it seems," said Arthur O'Shaughnessy), RECHARGE ("My attitude, my energy, my levels of motivation are directly tied to exercise"), PERSEVERANCE ("Go over, go under, go around, or go through, but never give up"), VALUES ("Things that matter most must never be at the mercy of things that matter least," said Goethe),CULTIVATE ("Pull the weeds. Otherwise the team, just like the garden, cannot grow," said John Murphy), TRUST ("Trust, not technology, is the issue of the decade," said Tom Peters, EXCELLENCE ("Excellence is not an act...It's a habit," said Artistotle), SERVICE ("Service is the lifeblood of any organization. Everything flows from it, and is nourished by it. Customer service is not a department...it's an attitude"), LEADERSHIP ("A leader's job is to look into the future and see the organization, not as it is, but as it should be"), QUALITY ("In the race for quality, there is no finish line,"),FOCUS ("Focus on the critical few, not the insignificant many"), FEELINGS ("You may not remember what someone says or does, but you'll never forget about how they made you feel,"), SUCCESS ("Try not to become a person of success, but rather try to become a person of value," Albert Einstein said), INTEGRITY ("Wisdom is knowing the right path to take. Integrity is taking it"), PASSION ("To love what you do and feel that it matters...How could anything be more fun," said Katherine Graham), and PURPOSE ("Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your father in heaven," said Matthew in the New Testament).

Ideals the author pushes include "aim for the heart;" "develop a service attitude," "think change"; "strive for authenticity;" "take action;" "hre great people;" "expect the unexpected;" "take the inch by inch approach;" "walk a mile in their shoes;" "embrace humor, hope, and optimism;" "reward the gift of imagination;" "manage your energy;" "develop a 'refuse to lose' attitude;" "reinforce core values;" "pull the weeds (among employees);" "create an attitude of ownership;" "make good habits;" "learn from Southwest Airlines (about making customers have fun and feel respected)"; "your customers must come in second (to your employees);" "make your brand stand for something;" "focus on your priorities;" "understand the soft stuff;" "lead with values;" "lead with integrity;" "love what you do;" "make a difference."

The author has written a book to be read quickly, and a book to be reread time and again. The author has written a book to keep, and a book to give away. The author has boiled leadership down to its essence, and created a basis for future thought and research.

It seems there are an unlimited number of books on leadership, and none are either omniscent or indispensable. The author has written a good book to read at the start of leadership responsibilities, and a good book to read when one is enmeshed in leadership responsiblities. The author has made a contribution both to leadership itself, and to aiding in the communication of what leaders do from veteran leaders to newer leaders.

Woodrow Wilson famously said that the more time he had to prepare a speech, the shorter he could make it. With many years in the business of leadership instruction, the author has written a short but comprehensive outline of what leadership is all about in a manner that provokes sustained thought and provides inspiration.

This book deserves a wide audience in business, government, volunteer organization, and non-profits. Wherever leadership is needed and there is doubt as to what leadership entails, this is a book to begin the discussions and help start developing the solutions.

5 out of 5 stars SIMPLE, CONCISE, and EFFECTIVE!.......2007-03-09

I love the book! It sits on my desk and everyone who walks in, picks up the book. The longer stories are only 2 pages... and someone can digest that in a 5 minute sitting. It is great!
Hope you enjoy,
Joe

Easy to Read, Easy to Follow

5 out of 5 stars Best Book on Business Presentations.......2001-01-06

While not in sales-ever, I have made more than 10,000 business presentations to groups outside the organization. The group size ranged from a few to many people. I have attended even more presentations than I have given. Overall, this is the best book on business presentations that I have read thus far and it is likely to be one of the best books on the subject when I have read even more books on the subject. Treatment of team presentations and video conferencing was very good. The discussion of hand outs to the audience is excellent. The review of all types of visual aids is very good. The author does a superb job reviewing the use of slides that is so overdone. Admonishment to keep jargon to a minimum is very correct.

Using stories and anecdotes is handled comprehensively. Humor is hard to use in a business environment. When you are sure it is going to work it is very effective, it is risky as the author discusses. The work on delivery techniques and gestures is good. The brief discussion on stage fright is O.K. The idea of ending stage fright forever is unrealistic. Always be aiming for the that big opportunity that will bring the butterflies right back. The tools to beat nerves need to be in constant development. No author has done a great job on the subject. The most important technique is to become a leading expert on your subject and yet this is rarely mentioned.

This book has substance, is nicely organized and well written. The author exudes credibility with humility. Compared to the more than two dozen books on speaking read in recent months, this is one of the best. The areas that I wish I would have gotten help on earlier are using emotional appeals and personal stories for a highly sophisticated audience.

Understanding the essence of Lou's Client Creator model and implementing it in your business, allows you to gain 'trusted advisor' status with your clients. He walks you through the process of developing your own style/script so that you can be the first class version of yourself rather than a second rate version of another successful sales representative.

If you are serious about bringing value to your clients and learning what matters most to them, read this book.

It's highly recommended for clients of Battson Coaching who are selling products or services.

5 out of 5 stars Make room on your bookshelf.......2006-11-03

Absolutely essential reading for the new school salesperson. Sales trainer, Cassara, makes the point we need to be authentic people providing value to those we sell. The value is not so much the product or service we offer which is often a commodity from the marketplace's stanpoint, but is our unique positive character traits which will align with client needs. The book contains worksheets designed to identify qualities in us that customers will find attractive and build conidence in ourselves knowing we are really helping others. Overlook the too cute acronyms for the excersises and worksheets.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2005-04-03

This is a hands on guide to your career. I am brand new in the business and found it to be extremely helpful. It is almost like having a veteran agent/rep. sitting in your back pocket ready to give you all the advice, tips, and lessons you need at a moments notice. He give you the tools necessary to succeed and do well in this extremely difficult business. At the end of every chapter is a lesson for you to think through and work on. I loved it! You're not just reading the words, but you are actually putting those words into action and taking that first step towards building your practice. I loved it, I love Lou Cassara (I heard him speak once), and I think you will love it as well. :)

5 out of 5 stars Deep thoughts for everyone in need of coaching.......2004-07-31

Lou Cassara is by far one of the best producers in the financial security industry. Just like he handles his clients, he has come through for the rest of us with this truly powerfull book that will give you not only the resources, but the insight necessary to create new and better relationships with your clients, friends and families on a very caring and intimate level. After reading this book and developing what Lou calls your Personal Value Statement, I imediately saw results in the conduct and content of the conversations I was having with EVERY single indivudual I came in contact with. This book is about much more than what might apear to be on the surface. I truly believe that if you apply the deep wealth of clear information into your life, you will be a much happier, effective, and caring individual. As Stephan Covey would put it, I have had a major paradigm shift after reading the book and completing its excercises just once. I plan on studying the book many times over, and strongly reccomend that if you are having trouble identifying in your relationships that you need to read this book. It will help you pick up priceless advice you will get NO WHERE else. I hope you all enjoy this book as much as I have, and a sincere thanks to Lou and all the work he has put into this book, it is truly a life impacting work.

Book Description

This book offers a radically different approach from the clever, but overly simplistic and frequently misleading formulas for success offered by most self-help business literature. The authors believe that in today's turbulent competitive environment it is necessary to embrace uncertainty and set more realistic expectations, while creating greater flexibility to adapt to ever-changing situations.

Phillip G. Clampitt and Robert DeKoch develop three important themes throughout the book: (1) Creating the illusion of certainty or “acting as if you know when you don't” is both unwise and counterproductive; (2) Embracing uncertainty is the key to effective leadership; (3) Leaders and organizations need to develop specific competencies to enable them to embrace uncertainty. The book shows how to develop these skills using examples drawn from the authors' experience in both the classroom and the real world.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A key working and thinking tool!.......2002-06-21

As an entreprenuer and consultant I found this book fascinating. It is so up-to-date with a theme we all are familiar with and most of us try to win over: uncertainty. Two factors make of this book a practical working tool: its writing flows, examples are fitting; it's a kind of flow that gets you thinking and relate the topics to issues you are working on. Good job Dr.Clampitt! A few years back I found attending your courses mind opening, this book takes the concepts to the next level: practice.

5 out of 5 stars Real World, Real Solutions.......2002-05-07

With bookshelves full of books written by instant management
McGurus selling their own flavors of the month,"Embracing Uncertainty" is a breath of fresh air. This book actually makes sense. It deals with the real world not theoretical models. If you enjoy reading academic mumbo-jumbo, this book is not for you.The old axiom:"the only sure things in life are taxes and death" should be changed. It should read:"the only sure things in life are taxes, death and uncertainty." You can cheat on your taxes, cheat death for a while, but you cannot avoid uncertainty. Embrace it!

5 out of 5 stars A "Must-Have" in Today's Corporate Environment.......2002-02-17

The dynamic combination of real-world business examples along with research produces a powerful book. Clampitt and DeKoch's study of over 1,000 employees revealing that those who work for organizations that embrace uncertainty have more job satisfaction and are more committed to their organization is a powerful testament to the importance of this subject.
But, they go beyond just acknowledging uncertainty; they offer concrete ways to enhance leadership skills.

Of particular mention is the portion of the book dedicated to communicating about uncertainty. The authors convinced me that at times it may be just as important to talk about what you do NOT know as it is to discuss what you DO know.

5 out of 5 stars Embracing Uncertainty.......2002-02-16

"I am absolutely thrilled with the book! With the onset of 9/11 my world has changed dramatically. As a business and community leader it has been very difficult to create a vision based on the ever-changing scenarios. This book has changed all that. It has set my mind at rest and has opened up a new vista of management confidence and direction in this "uncertain" time."

3 out of 5 stars Some Good Stuff if Your Patience is Strong Enough.......2002-12-19

As a student of change and one who writes and consults on the subject I found this pretty academic and full of theory. These folks get connected at the top of companies and then feedback to everyone what they observe from the mountaintop. What they dont seem to consider is whats happening along the way up - since they fly with the executives. There are a few scraps in here if you have time to find them. Average at best.

5 out of 5 stars Gets to the heart of the matter.......1999-05-09

This excellent text on change management focuses on the role that human nature and psychology play in management, and offers wise advice on how to implement significant change, such as in the transition from a project management based organization to a TQM or balanced scorecard (continuous) management process, or to support business process improvements or reengineering. It is optimistic and helpful -- and short enough to give to your senior managers. Get several copies and pass around; this is a low-cost/low-risk way to get change management started in your organization.

Book Description

This is the recipe for motivational speeches that work!

Corporations and associations spend millions each year on professional speakers who can move people from where they are to where they could be. Through motivational speeches, speakers reinforce audience values by addressing peoples' emotions. To persuade, a speaker must also add logic and evidence. Narrative, humor, metaphor, poetry, and even music help speakers achieve their goals. This book offers a recipe for creating speeches that connect with audiences, motivating and persuading and remain in the audience's hearts and minds. "Speak to the heart," says author Hanoch McCarty. "Find what is at the core of your audience's concerns. Keep your eyes and ears tuned to finding out those central, most important feelings, concerns, issues, or values and speak to them directly. That is the key, the foundation, the secret to the art of motivational speaking."

Hanoch McCarty Ed.D. is co-author of the New York Times Bestseller, A 4th Course of Chicken Soup for the Soul and a number of other popular books on kindness, self-esteem, and human behavior. He served for nearly twenty years as a professor at Cleveland State University in Ohio. He is also a nationally recognized and very popular motivational speaker on employee motivation, maximizing productivity, and on balancing the pressures of work life and home life. A long-time member of the National Speakers Association, his presentation, The Hidden Power of Kindness in the Workplace, is receiving rave reviews from his clients who include Fortune 500 companies, governmental agencies, school systems, and professional associations all over the U.S. and Canada.

3 out of 5 stars Speaking As A Business.......2000-09-14

The book is more about how to run the business of speaking for a living than about motivating your audience. The title and editorial review are extremely misleading. If you are the verge of making good money from speaking I recommend this book. If you are a cold person and you need help faking it till you make it this book may help. If you need to be reminded that being in business for your self, you are the only one that cares about the fine, but important details this book will help. Right now I am looking for books that help improve the first few dozen speeches. This is not one of the books I would recommend but I did read it from cover to cover. Who knows somebody might pay me to speak. If so I would re-read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant and practical for beginning & experienced speakers.......1999-07-19

the distillation of many years' speaking experience, this book gives you a very clear picture of how to do a motivational speech or keynote address. One of the best books on this subject I've ever read.

5 out of 5 stars Implementing Improvement.......2000-09-15

As a manager in an international investment bank, I found the methodologies suggested by the Kakabadse's eminently applicable. The material has facilitated a shift in thinking from merely managing teams to leading them- with commensurately measurable improvements in performance- ideas that work! This book follows in the tradition of kakabadse's previous work and presents cutting edge academic findings in a practical manner. Any manager who is interested in making the leap to "leader" in a manner appropriate to their organisation should view this as requisite reading.

5 out of 5 stars It was a pleasure.......2000-09-14

The book Essence of Leadership is a 'must' for every manager or manager-to-be, and all students of economic science; but it is also a great source of information and insight for any person interested in the technique and philosophy of leadership. With convincing competence the authors highlight the two basic kinds of leadership: corporate leadership and manager leaders. The survey on which the book is based covered 8,000 organizations across 14 countries. As a sociologist, I was impressed by the lack of prejudice on part of the authors who dismiss commonplaces and defend their results objectively, claiming for example that gender is irrelevant to achieving success as a leader. It is an excellent book I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars The best leadership book ever.......2000-09-09

This book covers every aspect of leadership styles, technique, reserch and praxis. A must.

1 out of 5 stars Oh please!.......1999-11-17

Kakabadse really annoyed me. He is not only arrogant, he is ignorant! This guy tries to tell us what are the factors of leadership success in some kind of typical 'politically manipulated organisation'. He is devoted to status quo! His ethics are very dubious and when he tries to explain them, he does so with an appallingly trivial justification of them. This guy made a mistake in his career choice, he should be working for the tories! (and maybe he does). Lost money: I want it back!

The formula sounds immediately intriguing: a 65-year-old, hard-charging executive with old-fashioned values conducts a dialogue with his 35-year-old, Zen-influenced son about what qualities define great leadership. One's a Republican, the other independent. One drives an Audi, the other a Subaru. One likes his vacations best when they involve golf in Scottsdale, while the other prefers backcountry roams in Yellowstone. Yet together, they aim to develop a common picture of the essence of leadership--agreement on what characterizes those special people that others follow--and in this engagingly written, disarmingly personal book, they do.

Co-authors Sander Flaum and his son, Jonathon Flaum, are products of different eras, and the inter-generational tension that runs through their book gives it its unique flavor. Father and son's voices alternate in The 100-Mile Walk, with the elder, Sander, typically writing first, and Jonathon presenting his own opinions next. Each shows the different influences of his generation in their exchanges about various aspects of leadership.

Sander grew up in Brooklyn, heavily influenced by the surrounding Jewish community. Inspired by a demanding, determined mother, he worked his way up a conventional career ladder, beginning at a large pharmaceutical company and then moving onto an ad agency. He displays and extols traditional virtues like hard work, determination, ambition, and the like. His son Jonathon, meanwhile, has a markedly more new-fashioned orientation, having gotten an MFA degree rather than an MBA, and referring repeatedly in the book to teachings of Zen masters. After a brief career in the arts, primarily as a playwright, Jonathon has become an executive coach with surprisingly starchy, button-downed clients.

As their backgrounds suggest, where father and son come together makes for interesting reading. The "walk" to which the book's title refers is actually a series of strolls, adding up to 100 miles, that father and son take together. In their jaunts through Manhattan; Asheville, North Carolina; New Orleans; and Columbus, Ohio, Sander and Jonathon discuss what eventually become 9 key qualities that they believe most good leaders exhibit. The 9 P's, as they refer to them, are: people, purpose, passion, performance, persistence, perspective, paranoia, principles, and practice.

The book's structure revolves around these 9 qualities, as Sander and Jonathon discuss each in turn, weave in anecdotal examples from real-life organizational leaders. The chapters then close with checklist summaries of key things for readers to remember. The lessons themselves aren't revolutionary; what's different is the thoughtful, at times intimate dialogue between a father and son, and what others might draw from it. Former astronaut and Senator John Glenn, lauds the Flaums' open, questioning tone, and their lack of dogmatism, in his Foreword: "this book does not presume answers; it asks probing questions." Those questions are indeed provocative ones, and readers ready to take an unusual walk with the Flaums will be well rewarded. --Peter Han

Book Description

Each generation leads in its own way. But to progress together, they must find ways to bridge the divide between their perspectives. Recognizing that truth, a 65-year-old traditional CEO and his 35-year-old Zen entrepreneur son embark on a six-month-long, 100-mile walk.

As they stroll the streets of New York and New Orleans, trek through the Blue Ridge Mountains, and hike along the Long Island coast, they talk about their experiences, their outlook on life and work, the achievements of leaders they have known, and how each views the nature and purpose of leadership.

Ultimately, the two men agree on nine key traits and practices essential to all leaders -- from principles and passion to performance and even paranoia -- and on how leaders and aspiring leaders can follow them consistently. Father and son also discover a lot about each other, their relationship, and the way two generations set apart by so many differences can respect and learn from each other.

5 out of 5 stars The 100-mile Walk: A Father And Son on a Quest to Find the Essence of Leadership.......2007-07-16

The 100-Mile Walk contains a rather unique look at successful business. The authors are father and son with some very different views on these aspects. Sander, the father, thinks of business in a traditional Baby Boomer way. He has become an extremely successful business person by gradually climbing the cooperate ladder, making career his number one priority, and long hours of sacrifice. His son, Jonathan, is also a highly successful business person. However, this generation X-er's views on business on quite different from his father's. Jonathan believes that a healthy balance between a career he loves and a life outside of work allows him full use of his creative abilities that will ultimately lead to his success.

This book illustrates that the definitions of leadership and business success are changing. Once men spend much of their lives isolated from their families so that they could provide a financially comfortable living. Today, many individuals sacrifice that security to spend time with their family and friends. The 100-Mile Walk shows that there is value in both career paths and that individuals following either path can learn from the other.

5 out of 5 stars Unusual approach to leadership books.......2007-01-21

I was pleasantly surprised at the different approachs to leadership shown by this father and son. This book reinforces the fact that things are changing in every aspect of our society. The older way of looking at the busines world suddenly seems lifeless and harsh even though the younger approach seems a bit naive. Perhaps, as usual, a blend of the two opposing ideas would be best.

5 out of 5 stars Plenty of ideas to chew on.......2006-03-10

Even though, as the authors state at the beginning, there are 250 books on leadership published every year, there don't seem to be many books on follower-ship, even though followers far outnumber leaders in this world. For followers, this book is quite effective as a wish list of ideal personality traits and management techniques by which they can gauge the effectiveness of their own leaders. Jonathon Flaum's sections are also useful for older employees who need to understand the values and perspectives of their younger supervisors.

5 out of 5 stars The 100 Mile Walk.......2006-03-09

A very good book on leadership. I liked the comparison of the two ages of the authors. They broke down leadership in a way that could be understood. I will probably re-read the book again.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf Business Book.......2006-02-10

Among the 25-30 business books that I read each year, only one or two stand out with unique insights that warrant "top shelf" billing. The 100-Mile Walk is one of those projects that rises above typical business publications by embedding both intelligent point/counter-point discussions and practical leadership stories from both traditional and new-style leader perspectives. Several of the authors' suggestions have proven useful in my own leadership practice as well as my work in guiding and developing Gen-X leaders. I recommended it highly to anyone seeking to understand the common DNA of leadership that transcends age, culture or personal style. This walk of self-discovery with Sander and Jonathan Flaum is a journey worth taking and sharing with others.
