Most helpful and informative and a guide to consummer goods that are chemical free and safe to use for health and well being.

3 out of 5 stars out of date for products but good general info.......2007-08-06

Unfortunately this book was published too many years ago to have many products that are still around or cover recent products. The good part of this book is that it educates you about the harmful and toxic things that are in so many of the everyday products we use.

I was so looking forward to this book, but when it arrived, I was soon disappointed. The copyright is at least 10 years old and most of the products are no longer available at the stores. What a waste. Why Amazon still sells this, is beyond me.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars tightwad bible.......2006-12-08

Although I have borrowed every other tightwad/money saving book out there from the library, the three editions by this author are a *MUST HAVE*. They are so inspiring when your resolve is slipping. When I bought them, I read them from cover to cover several times. Now, I open to a random page & read until I hit on yet ANOTHER great idea that I didn't absorb in the first reads. The organization is not poor--it is simply different than most books. It isn't arranged into 8 neat little chapters grouped by subject matter, but that is the joy of re-reading the books! For anyone who searches out "tips" online, you will love the organization of this book (and the other two editions).

I don't find her child-rearing to be an issue, either. I have always been a very gentle parent, and she mentioned only a couple things I would not do in my home. Yes, her children have to eat the food she prepares. Would you like to prepare separate meals for 6 children? Yes, her children wear used clothes. That doesn't indicate that they wear dirty clothes or clothes with holes in them. No, she doesn't read a separate book to every one of her 6 kids every night. I wouldn't either! Personally, I don't really like reading 6 kids' books in one day.

Her ideas may be "extreme" if you're easily offended by people who don't speak the status-quo. If you're sick of the constant quest for more, and you don't believe blind consumerism is the answer to every problem, and you want a paradigm shift in your life, this book is for you. If you think Americans had more money sense, family unity, and straight priorities a 130 years ago, this book is definitely for you.

Oh, and if you're not the creative type, you will be after you finish all three Tightwad Gazettes. They literally teach you how to think creatively. That's an invaluable education in and of itself.

5 out of 5 stars A great Dacyczyn.......2005-06-16

Dacyczyn does not encourage us to follow her methods literally; she only suggests looking at our spending habits and realigning them. Spending less money on areas which we consider low-priority leads to higher savings and monre money to spend on things we consider important to us.

2 out of 5 stars don't waste your money.......2004-05-28

This is the third book in the Tightwad Gazette trilogy that I have read. Thank goodness I found it at the library and did not pay for it! I enjoyed the first two books. I got some good ideas from Amy and grinned at the ideas that were too extreme for my family. I respected her choices in life and it helped me to think about the purchases I made and the effect I had on our environment. However, in the T.G. III, I found her to be overbearing, selfish, and a little crazy. She preaches about parents living frugally to enable 1 to stay home with children, however she admits to spending very little time with hers unless they are interested in helping her with her "save money" projects. What about your children's own interests? How about spending a little of all the time you have with them? Her quest for saving has not only shown her ability to spare her pennies, but her time and heart as well. She brags about Not: 1. volunteering 2. reading to her children 3. spending time with family 4. socialize etc. This sounds very lonely to me. I'm afraid that Amy's quest for money has allowed her to become as greedy as the people she condemns as "spendthrifts". At Amy's house, it's all about Amy and what Amy wants.

4 out of 5 stars great resource for the new to thrift crowd.......2004-04-20

I got this book as I was leaving work to become a stay at home mom. I can't say that I will use every idea she recommends but it does have some good ideas in it. For example, it may be cheaper not to coupon solely but to combine it with keeping a price book and only using coupons for items you would buy normally. As far as the editorials on child rearing and the environment go, I simply paged thru that though I don't disagree with her sentiments. I do wish the layout would be more organized but that is solved by simply reading the book and using the index. Not a bad read altogether and quite informative. If you already frugal, this may not tell you anything you don't know. For those of us novices, this is a great start.

5 out of 5 stars Spend the money for this, you'll save a thousand times over.......2004-01-11

I am just starting on the road to learning how to live on less, not because I have to; because I want to. There are some ways to save money listed in the book that I will probably never do, but overall I learned a lot, and enjoyed reading it while I learned. I purchased several other books on the same subject, but none gave me as much usable information as this book did. If you are serious about learning to conserve money, quit reading this review and order the book.

    Book Description

Analysis of consumption and saving decisions by households has always been one of the most active areas of research in economics--and with good reason. Private consumption is the most important component of aggregate demand in a capitalist economy, and explaining consumption is the key element in most macroeconomic forecasting models. To evaluate the effect of government policies invariably requires the knowledge of how they change parameters relevant for household decision making.

Understanding Saving collects eleven papers by economist Fumio Hayashi, along with two previously unpublished chapters, for a total of thirteen chapters. The monograph, which brings together Hayashi's empirical research on saving, is divided into three sections. Part I, "Liquidity Constraints", contains five studies that test the well-known implication of the Life Cycle-Permanent Income hypothesis that households shield consumption from income fluctuations. Part II, "Risk-Sharing and Altruism", contains three papers that examine the interactions between related and unrelated households predicted by the hypothesis for the US and Japanese households. The three papers in Part III, "Japanese Saving Behavior", present the author's explanation of the high saving rate in postwar Japan.

      3 out of 5 stars Varied Collection.......2005-12-09

This book is a collection of articles from Roth's frugality newsletter, Living Cheap News. The articles are collated by subject area, covering such topics as philosophy of frugality, real estate, automobiles, entertainment, food, coupons, clothing, travel, holidays, jobs, and retirement. Many of the articles close with a resources section that may include toll-free hotlines, contact information for specialized businesses mentioned in the article, and short book reviews. At the back of the book is a section entitled "Additional Resources," which includes many more of such phone numbers and reviews.

This isn't a bad collection of articles on frugality, but it also isn't terribly exciting. If it's your first book on frugality, it may give you direction, but for those who have read other books on the topic, there isn't a lot that's new here. Also, since this is a collection of articles originally published at different times, there is a bit of repetition. The best feature of the book is the resources, which can point you to more detailed information about specific topics. Unfortunately, there is no index, so if you find something useful, you had better put a bookmark in, because the information may not be easy to find again later.

4 out of 5 stars Are You Saving Money?.......2005-03-15

Larry Roth not only gives you down-to-earth advice on how to save money but how to implement that into living a very productive life. Not everyone knows the real secrets to saving money but Larry has been able to get his point across in a way that inspires you to make a commitment to bettering your own life. I don't belive in living cheap. I much prefer the term frugal, but whatever you call it, it is a way for those who are not rich to live well beyond their means. Take my advice, this is a good starting point in your quest to start saving money.

1 out of 5 stars Pushing others newsletters/books.......2004-09-24

I felt all this book offered were names, addresses, telephone numbers of other writers. This book didn't supply any means of saving money, only what newletter to purchase ($), what book to purchase ($). Nothing was beneficial and I am very glad I purchased this as a used item and not new.

Dr. Menchik's provacative writing keep me on the edge of my seat from page one till the heart-wrenching end! The saga of his economic theory combined with the tension of the bitter supply/demand battle provides excitement for everyone from the beginning student in Econ 101 to the tenured professor of economics. I strongly recommend this thrilling tale for anyone interested in a good cost benefit analysis or other great economic theories! I can't wait for the sequels!

          Book Description

Homa Hoodfar's richly detailed ethnography provides a rare glimpse into the daily life of Arab Muslim families. Focusing on the impact of economic liberalization policies from 1983 to 1993, she shows the crucial role of the household in survival strategies among low-income Egyptians. Hoodfar, an Iranian Muslim by birth, presents research that undermines many of the stereotypes associated with traditional Muslim women. Their apparent conservatism, she says, is based on rational calculation of the costs and benefits of working within formal and informal labor markets to secure household power. She posits that increasing adherence to Islam and taking up the veil on the part of women has been partially motivated by women's desire to protect and promote their interests both within and beyond households.

5 out of 5 stars REALLY Excellent Book But Different From What I Had Expected.......2003-07-20

I ordered this book expecting it to talk about marriage practices in Egypt. While it touched on this, in less (or different depth) than I had expected, I really did get a lot more than I bargained for.

This book is exceptional, in that it is written by an Islamic (Iranian) woman sociologist, who had lived in, and gotten her degree in England. While she had to study Egyptian Arabic to converse with the people, she lived with them, and was able to understand many more facets of their culture in a different way than a westerner would have, and she was also more accepted and trusted by them because she was a Muslim (and her knowledge of Islam was extensively tested by her subjects in her early months of research). Yet, she is unlike most Arab sociologists in that she is able to write this book for a WESTERN audience, although the book is aimed more toward professional anthropologist/sociologists than the general public, as evidenced by her extensive citations and discussions of research methods. But in spite of that, I as a general reader, never found the book boring. It was difficult to put down. I was particularly interested in this subject, as I had spend several months living in Egypt during the time the author was doing her research, and compared my experiences to the author's. Her experiences and information are so much more extensive and rich.

The book basically covers every facet of how poor men and women are able to "make it" and "get by," especially when the majority of them are forced to work outside of the formal sector. I am an American who has lived and worked in Morocco for 12 years; I found that her book more fully explained much of the behavior I see here in Morocco among the poorer classes, even though the economic conditions (especially level of government subsidies) are not the same. The book shows the behavior of the poor to be very LOGICAL and WORKABLE solutions to their problems, within the frameworks they have to work in.

The book covered pre-marriage negotiations extensively, REALLY explaining the THINKING behind these negotiations. Again, even having lived in Morocco for 12 years, and even having married into the society, these things were never clear to me before, as they really are now.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is seriously trying to understand the THINKING of both men and women in Arabic cultures, and how that thinking, and the subsequent actions which follow from that thinking, is different from western cultures.

Lastly, this book presents a more POSITIVE view of Egyptians than I have EVER seen. Unfortunately, so many of the Egyptians that tourists, especially, come in contact with, tend to be such deceitful liars, leaving foreigners with a distasteful impression of all Egyptians. This book was really uplifting, positive, and refreshing, presenting so many honest, hard-working, caring people who constantly help each other out! I would have liked to meet many of these people myself. It really shows the Egyptians in a positive way.

3 out of 5 stars Between Marriage and the Market.......2001-08-01

Continuing the excellent dissection of Cairene family life undertaken by several American-based scholars, Hoodfar focuses on poor women and how they cope with the tribulations of daily life. An anthropologist of Iranian origins teaching at Concordia University, the author spent a decade in Cairo doing research. She has much to show for her efforts. At base, she shows how much of a contract marriage is, and how this explains such patterns as the preference for husbands to be older than wives, the advantages of marrying within the family, a woman's need for parental approval of her husband, and the ridicule men face when they do housework ("men in the kitchen look like women").

Most striking, Hoodfar shows the way in which patterns are changing: how the Western ideal of a love marriage has an unsteady impact ("I married for love, but want my three daughters . . . to marry in the traditional arranged way"); the effect of waiting until later in life to marry; and the huge consequences of women being gainfully employed.

Hoodfar's perceptive study points to family life in Cairo becoming with time less Western, not more. For example, she finds that the immensely detailed marriage contracts now prevailing (which regulate everything from the wife's use of contraception to the number of meals with meat per week a husband can expect) "emerged only in the last few decades." This in turn suggests that, superficial signs of convergence to the contrary, the Middle East in its essence is not Westernizing.
