Leadership, Ethics and Policing: Challenges for the 21st Century
ASIN: 1574441183 |
Book Description
Every Officer is a Leader: Leadership Transformation in Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice, authored by leadership expert Terry Anderson and several well known leaders in the law enforcement and criminal justice profession, responds to the need for a comprehensive leadership development model for the education and training of police, justice and public safety supervisors, managers and front line officers. He examines how leadership development has a profound impact on the morale and performance of individual officers, teams, and organizations, illustrating in depth and detail how police and other justice and public safety leaders (in corrections, fire, customs, immigration, security, courts, etc.) can implement the Transforming Leadership process, skills, and principles. The recent focus (during the past 10 years) on community policing initiatives has made competency based leadership skills training essential for front line officers. The author's innovative contribution is a focus on the necessity to build "a leadership organization" before - and to an extent, while - you move ahead into building a "learning organization" that is responsive to community and internal organizational needs. The personal, team, and organization development skills discussed in this book are necessary pre-requisites to successful implementation of any neighborhood or community policing initiatives. Every Officer is a Leader: Leadership Transformation in Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice provides a model for integrating other models into a holistic leadership development framework. It furnishes a map for developing critical leadership skills with self-assessment, includes the developmental aspects of leadership expert Terry Anderson's previous book on Transforming Leadership, and applies them to law enforcement and criminal justice. Anderson and his contributing authors add clarity, perspective, and examples to show how individual leaders can develop themselves, and one another, into high-performance team leaders and officers who motivate others to respond to issues that affect the morale, health, and safety of the communities in which they serve. This new focus adds a perspective on security issues that affect police, justice and public safety organizations.

Handbook of Nursing Leadership: Creative Skills for a Culture of Change by Jeri A. Milstead and Elizabeth Furlong.......2006-04-06
This book has been written by two doctorally prepared nurses for people transitioning from student to new nurse. The book has six parts and 26 chapters including: Part I Leadership, Part II: A Culture of Safety, Part III: Using Those Communication Skills You learned in Psych Nursing, Part IV: Sticky Wickets: Delegation and Communication, Part V: A Career Trajectory of Leadership, Part VI: Golden Opportunities for Professional Nurses.
Each chapter begins with competencies, usually one rigorous one like "Becoming involved in reviewing and revising, if necessary, the agency policy on reporting errors where I work." or "Join at least one professional nurse organization." Subtitles in the narrative are bolded for easy identification of content. Web sites are listed. There are several critical thinking activities at the end of the chapters followed by a list of current references. There are tables, figures that are often work sheets, real-life case studies, and interactive exercises for active learning.
The book addresses leadership, communication skills, delegation, documentation, opportunities, and career tracks. It is 6 by 8 inches making it easy to hold and read. The greatest strengths are the critical thinking and active learning exercises. This book is particularly good for generic nursing students who are about to graduate and become registered nurses.

Book Description
A basic text on general security techniques, this book emphasizes the philosophical, moral and ethical responsibilities of the security officer, along with the elements of various specialties within the field.
This book is designed for not only the beginning student, but for ambitious security personnel seeking advancement and directors training staff in the field.
It is important for security personnel, in this age of the computer, to understand the background and basic elements of security procedures. It is also important to understand this philosophy in order to develop programs which may be used in defending against charges of "inadequate security" in civil litigation.
This book is an update of a beginning text which has been used successfully in colleges and universities for twenty years. It updates the techniques of various specialties along with current technological approaches towards solving those security-related issues. It has left unchanged the philosophical, moral, and ethical approach to the security procedures, the abandonment of which has led to literally thousands of lawsuits against security departments and private guard companies, alleging "inadequate security" procedures, hiring and training.
New technologies, in almost every subcategory of the security industry, have changed the profession forever. Computers have assumed much of the performance formerly conducted by both trained and untrained security officers. Skills have changed to a degree where knowledge is determined by one's level of computer awareness. This book presents many of those new techniques and developments.
Updated and current information
Retains philosophical, moral and ethical approach to security procedures

I have read this book which is more informative and most useful book for all the loss prevention managers. I feel each and every company should refer to it before implementing any security measure. It has all the topics and all the loss prevention managers should keep it as ready reference.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent book for the safety professional.......2000-07-12
This book contains 17 chapters that define basic concepts of loss control in an informative, easy to read format. The strength of this book was the author's straight forward practical approach to loss control leadership. An effective methodology to implementation, with a motivating style of writting made this my most popular book in OH&S to date. This book is one of the few that have also become a permanant addition to my reference library. The books weakness was that it did not cover the historical aspects in great detail (a weakness that may reflect the reviewers interests). The book was a text used at British Columbia Institute of Technology for it's OH&S program.

Customer Reviews:
Informative and Easy to Understand.......2001-06-11
If you want information about OSHA standards as it relates to health care, this is the book for you. It is easy to understand, covers all of the basics and even has chapter tests, (good for employee training). I have used this book to aid in writing a policies & procedures manual for my office. There are contacts at the back of the book for further information from a variety of sources. It covers fire, bloodborne pathogens, hazardous materials, respirators, TB, ergonomics, hazardous waste, radiation, infection control, confined spaces, medical records... It is an invaluable medical practice tool.
Book Description
Creating Safe Schools for All Students draws on the latest research, law, and expert judgment to offer educators a comprehensive program for designing safe schools. This book addresses several theoretical perspectives through which readers can come to understand school safety. It also provides a set of standards that educators can use to evaluate their schools and then develop practical and systematic plans for ensuring orderly and caring learning environments. Attention is given to the distinction between preventing violence and promoting safety. For educators or educational administrators.
Customer Reviews:
must read.......2007-01-24
Thorough, concise, powerful. Examines the idea that school safety is about much more than just the school building and grounds. This is a must read for all educators - particularly members of school safety teams.
Principals, put this book on the top of your reading list.......2003-12-03
Working for an organization dedicated to reducing violence in schools, I've had the opportunity to read many books in the past three years on this topic. Creating Safe Schools for All Children is the single best resource I've found, to date. The material was presented in a systematic way with key points for each chapter, call out boxes for case studies and recommendations, and a thorough presentation of some of the most important points of current research. I'd recommend every principal and school board member put this book at the top of their reading list.
An experienced administrator talks..........2002-08-14
This very good book presents school safety concerns from three perspectives: (1) the high salience of current safety issues; (2) in-depth discussion of seven standards for school safety; and (3) questions that parents, teachers, and safety experts ask about school safety. He concludes with an appendix which gives the list of seven school safety standards and specific recommendations for each.
I thought this writer was clear, dispassionate, very informative, and useful. He does not have a "theory of discipline," but instead incorporates the best of both reflective and "conservative" disciplinary procedures. He is keen on building student self-discipline and safety through appropriate use of information (rules themselves), consequences (logical), resolution, and restitution; but he does not shy away from considering alternative programs. He was very informative about safety for Special Education youngsters.
Most readers for this book will be professional educators in training. It is more helpful for curriculum specialists and administrators than for teachers, but the integration of classroom rules to school-wide rules receives serious consideration.
