Book Description

In the last decade, school shootings have decimated communities and terrified parents, teachers, and children in even the most "family friendly" American towns and suburbs. These tragedies appear to be the spontaneous acts of disconnected teens, but this important book argues that the roots of violence are deeply entwined in the communities themselves. Rampage challenges the "loner theory" of school violence and shows why so many adults and students miss the warning signs that could prevent it.

1 out of 5 stars not a mental illness .......2007-05-07

God and religion are the problems?

What about schools in communist countries? No God in that, and none of this mass killing, so that point is moot

Japan doesn't have any "God and Jesus", no mass killings.

NOTE: So These countries don't have mentally ILL????

The USA is a whole mix of kids and religions is what set some kids off, upper class mixing with lower class, shy with jocks, different religions, all combined. This has never happened in the society in history, all of this mixing. Yes we are trying to "have a go at it", and for the most part its working, but nothing is 100% perfect.

Everyone is getting it wrong, flat wrong

This author claims it's a mental illness that these shooters suffer from. It has NOTHING to do with a "mental illness", that's flat wrongo. I saw her on TV on the Bill Curtis rampage special she has no make up on, and is making a TV appearance, so that must be how she is, women with no make up on, and especially those who need it, always turn out to be radicals, and who trust a radicals view? Not many.

Oh no, I just put her down, will she go postal now? And have you notice a woman has never gone postal with a gun? Why? Because women, while they do suicide, they don't take it out on others, only themselves because they blame themselves if something goes wrong. If a woman has a weakness, a physical handicap, she still by because she can still get a man, IF she wants to, for a weakness in a woman does not bother a man, what's the only thing a man is really after? Hint hint, right you guessed it. More so if a woman has a weakness many men will take advantage of that and want her more, as man is a dominator and likes a weakness, to give him power. So bottom line is a woman with a physical impairment, or someone who doesn't fit in with a "click", can always find a man, if she wants one.

Well, the author doesn't get it. zero stars for calling it a mental illness, when its not. Or it would happen in other countries, for if we have mentally ill in the USA, then the rest of the world has some also. Where are the mass killers in other countries???

Cho's speech problem, the columbine killers were small kids, any weakness in a male, he then can have problems with girls/ women and asserting himself in any "male ranks". For females are the opposite, they do *not* like a weakness in males. Also males, have the need by nature to be strong, and if other boys/men treat them as lesser thans, over time, it builds up. If you do not suffer from anything physical, then you will NOT ever get this, I don't care how many degrees you have, how much money you have, how observant you are of the world, how smart you are, male or female, you will never get it.

Look at the animal world in the wild?, who gets all the females? The strongest male.

Males that get "excluded" from others turn inward, and start watching everyone and everything else from the outside in, they just watch and watch. See others having a good time. They just watch and watch and watch. It builds and builds and builds.

There isn't any "counseling" or "meds" that is going to change anything, I said, there isn't any counseling or meds that is going to change anything. That's a flat red flag for people that push that flat don't get it, and think they do, or are trying to get it.

You have a person that is "removed" from society, through "default" meaning its NOT anything they have done, but its how others are treating them, then your going to have people that "check out", for humans do not life to be alone. Animals like to be alone, hence, no suicides in the animal world. Yet more proof we are not animals, but that's another conversation.

This book does not really bring anything new to the table, but is worth having if for no other reason than it has a history of shootings that stretches all the way back to the 70's. (All trends, graphs and studies usually start in the 90's when the killings reached their appex.) It was interesting to see that back then the trend tended to be "Shoot Authority Figures!" as opposed to today's killers who tend to hunt their peers instead.

Exactly, and when did the all the "times change" and we all started to live with each other? In the 1970's , right? and no one did one of these rampages before the 1970's, right? *RIGHT*

Lastly, all these kinds of problems happen in big large schools, right? Right

Everyone is getting it wrong, flat wrong. What I just said are "the" answers, and I do not have a PHD, but I have a physical problem, so I know.

You either get to the point where you except it, through faith that after your outta here from this planet life will be better, or you succumb to it and always seeking help of the world, meds, counseling, nothing changes, then you lose it. For the nearly 99% of those who lose it and commit suicide they do it alone, and you never here about them, right? For the few that get so pissed off that they fell they need to send a message, and take out as many as they can on the way, that's what they do. I am surprised it doesn't happen more often, isn't anybody else? So we can be thankful for that.

Bottom line is, each generation of kids come along, none of them know about what has happened in history, kids being kids bulling and making fun of and excluding others has gone on for as long as time has been going on, nothing new here, nothing will change. All this new age of counseling and meds is a phony Band-Aid. Sure it helps suppress and save a few people, keeps some in check, but it doesn't change the problem. And I know many will debate it's not supposed to, it's only to help one person at a time, deal with their "own" stuff. But it's not working, more meds and counseling is going on than ever in history, and suicide is higher now than ever, right? Yes we have more of a world population, but the ratio is higher now than ever. Maybe that's because guns are new over the last few centuries, which is by far the most used method, especially by males.

I guess the only way outta all this is to move to the mountains and live an easy life! Well, that's no answer either, why do you think they have so many lil bars in all over in every mountain area.

Interesting mankind's continual needs to be around people no matter where in the world, we hate solitary, but many animals in the wild the world over will only live solitary, and they prefer it.

God is playing tricks on us?

Could be, for although my wife likes it, my hair just doesn't grow much on my head anymore, where I want it, yet it continues to grow plenty on my face, where I don't want it, so man has to shave his face till he gets old and dies, yet many males have so little on the top of the head.

Yep, God "is" playing tricks on us haha

4 out of 5 stars Good sociological treatment of a disturbing topic.......2007-04-21

An in-depth look at two school shooting cases, supplemented by statistics about the trends in school shootings over recent decades. Because each member of this group of sociologists writes his/her own chapter, there is some repetition of information, but the gain in reading each contribution is to understand the multiplicity of factors which coalesce in the shootings. It's not as simple as violent video games, or bullying, or family life, or youth culture, or socioeconomic status, or racism, or academic success. One key factor, among several others, is the tendency of school personnel and community members to overlook children's signs of distress and to give kids the chance to start over in a new year, neglecting to accumulate a historical record of kids' transgressions and thereby succombing to a kind of wishful thinking that kids will turn out okay in the end. So many do, but those who turn violent have escaped the radar of the adult world.

4 out of 5 stars Highly relevant to the Virginia Tech tragedy.......2007-04-21

Research like this is useful for anyone who wants to understand the Virginia Tech tragedy. School shooters such as Cho Seung-Hui are not born raging to kill. They are molded through abuse. Cho is a textbook example of the type of school shooter featured in these in-depth case studies - shy, socially awkward, and tormented by high school classmates.

The social climates at the high schools attended by school shooters are typically vicious and hateful, with rampant sexual harassment of girls and women and antigay harassment of less dominant boys.

At Columbine High School, the most famous school shooting site studied in this book, jocks reigned supreme. The state wrestling champion, the leader of a clique of athlete bullies and the symbol of injustice for school shooters Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, was allowed to park his $100,000 Hummer all day in a 15-minute parking space. The school indulged athletes' rampant sexual and racial bullying and physical abuse of others, including Harris and Kleboldand were given free license to abuse others. A coach did nothing when the athletes targeted a Jewish boy in gym class, singing songs about Hitler when he made a basket, pinning him to the ground and doing "body twisters" that left him bruised all over, and threatening to set him on fire.

Many of the school shooters featured in this book endured antigay harassment that contributed to their rage. Barry Loukaitis, who killed a teacher and two students in Washington state, was taunted by school jocks as a "faggot." Luke Woodham in Mississippi, who killed two students and wounded seven others, was often called "gay" by classmates. Michael Carneal, who killed three fellow students and wounded five in Kentucky, was labeled as "gay" in the school newspaper. Charles Williams in Santee, California, who shot at 15 students and adults and killed two, had been derided as "a skinny faggot."

According to an Associated Press news account (4/20/07), Cho endured similar abuse to the shooters featured in this book: "Classmates in Virginia, where Cho grew up, said he was teased and picked on, apparently because of shyness and his strange, mumbly way of speaking. Once, in English class at Westfield High School in Chantilly, Va., when the teacher had the students read aloud, Cho looked down when it was his turn, said Chris Davids, a Virginia Tech senior and high school classmate. After the teacher threatened him with an F for participation, Cho began reading in a strange, deep voice that sounded "like he had something in his mouth," Davids said. "The whole class started laughing and pointing and saying, `Go back to China,'" Davids said. [In middle school, another student is quoted as saying,]"There were just some people who were really mean to him and they would push him down and laugh at him. He didn't speak English really well and they would really make fun of him." "

1 out of 5 stars Missing the elephant in the living room.......2006-05-02

Rampage misses the elephant in the living room.

Although the public schools account for about 85% of the student population in the United States, they represent nearly 100% of the fatal shootings. This is statistically significant and is no accident.

For although the authors fail to mention it, the main reason for this discrepancy is that the public schools are basically amoral. God, prayer, and even american tradition are absent from them.

The separation of church from state has not kept religion out of the public schools. Far from it. Rather amoral secular humanism has become the de facto form of worship there.

Among other things, this has removed much of the inner self restraint that traditionally kept students in line which in turn has lead to school shootings.

3 out of 5 stars Great on Statistics.......2006-02-08

I don't want to say "I'm a big Fan" of this genre, But I do my fair share of reading about school shooters & Rampage Killers.
This book does not really bring anything new to the table, but is worth having if for no other reason than it has a history of shootings that stretches all the way back to the 70's. 5 out of 5 stars Good accurate read...........2007-06-08

Being from Phoenix I knew the story well. This is a good read, but prepare to meet evil as close to face to face as one can get without actually being there. I couldn't put this book down. I couldn't believe such evil and lack of conscious could reside in one person. Any man who can kill a toddler and involve his own sons in it is really beyond evil. Insane maybe? But, I don't think so. I think that Tison was so full of himself that he thought he'd always get away with the things he had done. And having that IDIOT Cardwell as the warden was Tison's ticket to the outside.... and the multiple murders of innocent people. Unbelievable, but true.

3 out of 5 stars I wish I had been there..........2007-04-13

Tison, Greenawalt and his misguided idiot kids were without a doubt stains in this world. Killing without regard to life is one thing, but the way they murdered innocent people, including a 22 month old child, speaks for itself. To suggest that the Tison boys were "scared" of their dad is rediculous to me. They are just as guilty, just as deranged and just as degenerate as their father. The girl who was found in the desert some distance from the scene was my girlfriend, Theresa Tyson. No relation to the murderers thank god. Theresa was a wonderful young woman with her whole future ahead of her. It's easy for these men to kill people who couldnt defend themselves. I call them cowards. I smiled the day I heard that Gary Gene Tison died. I wished that I was there to watch Randy Greenawalt be put to death in prison. Hell, I would have done it. I thought that his death was far far better than the one he deserved. I don't remember the name of the Author who interviewed me in Las Vegas all those years ago, if it was this Author, I think that his portrayal of the Tison boys showed them to be far too innocent. Truth is, they could have said anything about what happened because they killed everyone else. I hope they burn.

5 out of 5 stars It gave me the creeps!.......2006-05-20

I read this book in August/September 1991 while traveling through the area where it all happened. The trip was kind of a premarital honeymoon vacation and our first trip to the US (I live in The Netherlands). I bought the book so I could read while off duty from driving the van and I guess it turned out to be a 'lucky' choice. From the first page on I was sucked into the story. I just could not put it away. As the story developed we came nearer to the place where it actually happened. I will never forget the day we passed Flagstaff. The book gave me the creeps. Still does.
This book screams to be put into a movie. Gary Tison makes Hannibal Lecter look like a school kid.
One of the most chilling books I've ever read!

4 out of 5 stars Personal Experience with Randy Greenwalt.......2005-05-08

I think Clarke is pretty close to the money. Randy Greenwalt took me fishing when I was a kid and did yard work for our family, his Dad was a bricklayer in my Dad's construction company. I still have a beautiful display cabinet that he built in his senior year woods class at Palmyra MO high school. Didn't know much about abnormal psych then, but in retrospect there was a lot about Randy (and his younger brother James 'Doc' Greenwalt) that I now realize was a short fuse waiting to go off. Dad often said that their father was too rough on them and it was just a matter of time before their pent-up anger blew in one direction or another. Randy was not a leader, but he was a dedicated follower, which meshed well with Tison's warped sense of purpose. Randy probably would have been a good Marine--his sister Darlene did have a successful Army career.

Most interesting study.

5 out of 5 stars Chilling.......2003-08-20

Being from Gary Tison's hometown of Casa Grande Az. I was mesmerized by the story of his escape and the shoot out and capture of his three sons and Randy Greenwalt. I had seen the movie "Killer in the Family" with Robert Mitchum as Gary Tison and I loved it. I couldn't put the book down. Clark does a great job of telling about it all.

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't Put It Down...........2005-06-20

I have been reading true crime since I was about 11 years old and I must say this one will stay in my collection. I find that many true crime books are written without much attention to background or in-depth analysis. I began reading this after having just finished Jim Schutze's "Bully" and I had been dissapointed with the lack of depth in that book and how it seemed rushed. Cannot say that about "Murder of Innocence" at all! This account, and I have yet to read Eggington's book on this case so I cannot compare, goes into great detail to descibe Laurie Dann as the person she was from childhood to age 30 and describes her descent into madness in such a way that I kept wondering "What is she going to do next?" There are alot of characters to keep straightened out - as to who is a relative, in-law, roommate or just someone who slighted her somehow; indeed this book is for the serious reader and not one looking for a quick superficial account of a case. The manner in which Laurie hops from one college to another is amazing; clearly her parents never sat her down and seriously told her "You have a failed marriage and you have enrolled in college several times but dropped out. You seem to be lacking direction in your life and we want to know what the problem is and what we can do to help." More often, her mother was aloof regarding Laurie's problems, and her father, although he did seem to love her, could not, or did not want to, see how serious her problems were. Her parents were ostriches with their heads in the sand - probably hoping Laurie would skate through life and hopefully find her way without too much of a burden on them. I cannot help feeling also that her medical care could have been more aggressive, but it appears that her psychiatrist tried numerous times to keep in contact with her but Laurie treated doctors and dormitories like revolving doors. I highly recommend this book for anyone studying forensic science or psychology, and it should be recommended to those in law enforcement as well. Excellent job!

4 out of 5 stars Mack terminates a death-by-drugs terror team!.......2006-05-21

Mountain Rampage is a decent, action-packed entry in the Executioner series; it is also the debut of short-lived (ghost)writer E. Richard Churchill, who would go on to helm the much better #56: Island Deathtrap.

This time, the plot revolves around our hero, Mack Bolan, assaulting an unnamed international terrorist organization. It seems they are developing mind control drugs in a mountain fortress masquerading as a rest home. Soon, they will drop their sinister creation into the nation's water supply...

While the author does a fair job of describing the villains and their drugs, he fails to ever really explain their group or their motives. Like Island Deathtrap, the action takes place all in a day or two and is contained within a single rural location where Mack must interact with stubborn locals suspicious of outsiders. However, the novel is over 160 pages in (most Executioner novels, including Island Deathtrap) run 180 pages. To make up for this, the publisher has padded the book with ads for Mack Bolan: Live Large! bumper stickers and excerpts of forthcoming books. Excerpts include: Executioner #55: Paradine's Gauntlet, Dagger: The Centaur Conspiracy and SOBs: The Barrabas Run. There is also a cheery three page promo piece about the new authors and direction the publisher is taking The Executioner series in now that creator Don Pendleton has left the series (#38: Satan's Sabbath was his last book).

Having Watched the movie or read the book doesn't make someone
an expert in the events of 20th May. Even as one of the victims of the "Protagonist" aka, Ms Dann, the reality is Killers don't show their true colors to everyone, despite what books or movies might portray. The only reasons the media give you this impression is so you feel safe at home "knowing" you don't know anyone capable of this... the fact is you can never know what the person next to you is capable of. If you want to know a bit more about the events then you could read this book- but remember, this is a book... and as such falable! Read with caution and remember, interpretation of events does not make for gospel truth!

5 out of 5 stars one of the best true crime books i've read.......2004-04-10

this is one of the saddest books i ever read.laurie dann was a very troubled mentally ill young woman who went on a shooting spree in a elementary school in 1988 in illinois, usa injuring many and killing one innocent child.this was a tradegy i feel that was very preventable.everybody who had contact with her knew she was deeply disturbed and possibly dangerous.she even stabbed her ex husband with a ice pick in his sleep but without enough evidence she could'nt be charged.the author does a great job on detailing the decline into insanity of this young somewhat attractive lady.for anyone who loves true crime,i highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars devinar.......2003-05-10

I think that the movie was really good. However, I think it left out some important aspects as what lead up to the tragic end. I also think that her parents should be held accountable for her actions. Because they knew that she was ill and they ignored the obvious. On the other hand, her husband did try to help her but he did not do enough.

5 out of 5 stars Probably unacceptable as a H. S. book report, yet good enuff.......2003-06-14

Written at a High School level, this is a quite literate and well developed treatment of The Hulk, Spiderman, and The Black Cat in novel form. It has all the action and story value of the comics. For newcomers, there's enough exposition to introduce the characters, done briefly enough not to annoy old-timers well acquainted with the Marvel Universe.

There's reasonable complexity here. Neither the heroes nor the bad guys are completely working together since each has his or her own agenda. Added to that is the S.A.F.E. agent working under cover representing government but not necessarily in the best interests of the heroes. And so there are easily enough complications to keep a mature reader interested.

This isn't a bad book at all for those who want to get better acquainted with the not altogether jolly green giant before they see the movie. Just bear in mind that the Hulk's creators made him a reasonable 7 footer as opposed to the 12 foot creature in the movie. Note also that the character has developed in several ways over the years and so you might find his characterization in this book somewhat different than the movie characterization.

Worth reading, even if you're way past High School age.

5 out of 5 stars excelent.......2000-04-02

This book is great. It is a great beginin for a great trilogy. Though this book takes place in present time, some events go as far back as when doom tried to steal surfer's power. If you thought that the hulk we bad news, then try to imagiane fourteen hulks on the ramapge and one of them being Flash Thompson spidy's close friend and being controld by a mad man. I recomnd this series as a must buy.

5 out of 5 stars much better than it should've been!.......1999-02-02

I've never liked Fingeroth or Fein as writers, so I almost didn't buy this book, but I was pleasantly surprised. And I love SAFE, who have been in a lot of the Marvel novels. The idea of Hulk clones is kind of goofy, but they made it work here.

5 out of 5 stars Comic book writers can be good novel writers.......1998-11-08

In the tradition of those comic book writers who can make a successful jump to novel writing (They include Peter David and David Michelinie) Danny Fingeroth and Eric Fein made such a move in this, the first book of the "Doom's Day" trilogy. The story is very balanced out. With half the action centering on Peter Parker and the other half on Dr. Bruce Banner. Flash Thomson and the Black Cat played important roles in the story and we get to see the new head of a goverment agency make his debut here in the form of Col. Sean Morgan and his team at SAFE. Danny and Eric woked as both writers and editors of Spider-Man for a good many years at Marvel and here they get a change to work with him one more time. It was a delightful story.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Book to Start off a Great Trilogy!.......1997-07-24

This is a great start of a series. A whole bunch of Hulks running around and Flash Thompson is one of them! Ofcourse the real Hulk is there as well. Doctor Doom was in this one alot more than book 2. Go read it.

5 out of 5 stars The no-worry superhero.......2006-12-28

My boys (4 & 6) love this book and the other Atomic Ace. The stories are fun with Dad and Mom as the heroes and the illustrations are imaginative and fun--the kids will flip through the book just to look at them again and again.

Of course, You don't have to build your own monster, almost any action figure or plastic toy will do. This just shows how fun it is to make your giant monster and destroy everything on the field.

3 out of 5 stars Needs more detail.......2005-01-06

Although this book provides a foundation for a new table top war game, it does not contain enough information to describe a "Toy Battle System". The first in the Giant Monster Rampage series, I expected more details on the system mechanics and options for play.

This book was followed by Giant Monster Rampage II, which I have also reviewed.
