Poorly written and poorly thought out.......2007-04-16
I used both this book and the Priceton Review, and I have to say the Princeton Review one is much better.
The Barron's one appears to have lots of practice questions, but really, towards the middle of the book they leave out free-response questions. Instead, they tell you to solve the question that was provided in the middle of that chapter.
It was as if they wrote this on a deadline and rushed through the entire thing. The content seemed inadequate and explanations were poor. Their attempts to make funny remarks to appeal to the teenage audience were often inappropriate or left the reader confused.
Barron's is usually my first choice for AP prep, but the AP economics book is one exception.
However, you might want to buy this anyway since it comes with 2 practice tests that you could use.

When compared to the Princtons review book, I found that the tests in the Barrons book were too easy. The rest of the book is well laid ou though and explanations are clear and concise. I took the micro and macro tests in may 06 and got 5s on both. But this was mostly because of the princeton book & going online to the ap website.

AP Economics teacher highly recommends.......2005-09-04
As an AP Economics teacher, I recommended 5 Steps to a 5 to my students this past year. The students gave it high marks for its thorough review of both micro and macro economics. The author provides strong pointers for each concept and plenty of practice questions. The students' results were outstanding: a 100 percent pass rate on micro and 98 percent on macro, with mostly 4s and 5s on the two exams. My students worked hard throughout the year, but this review guide helped a lot with test preparation. Having used the Princeton "Cracking the AP" book in previous years, I found 5 steps to a 5 to be the superior review book.

I purchased this book on the recommendation of the person who gave this book 5 stars. However, upon receipt of this book and subsequent examination, I discovered that the only thing this book provides is a series of multiple-choice questions and answers...several hundred of them. This book does not provide ANY explanation of the material. I honestly believe that it would actually be less time consuming to take this class than it would be to try to memorize all of the information contained in this book. Needless to say, I returned this book for a refund. If it was possible to give this book a negative rating...I would have done so. This book deserves much worse than a 1 star rating.

This book is an intermediate microeconomics book intended primarily for undergraduate, upper division students. However, those not attending college can also benefit from this book by using it for independent study or reference material. There are no major prerequisites other than some knowledge of basic economics. For those who have a calculus background, the author does include one to three solved problems at the end of the majority of the chapters which are clearly marked.
Of the 14 chapters that make up this book, one is an added chapter and three are optional chapters. The added chapter introduces such topics as the Lerner and Herfindahl indexes which deal with measuring monopoly power, peak-load and cost-plus pricing, and game theory. Some of the concepts presented in the three optional chapters are: the Hicksian and Slutsky substitution effects of a price change, deriving indifference curves from inferred consumers' preferences, price index numbers, utility theory under uncertainity, the Cobb-Douglas production function, linear programming, and general equilibrium and welfare economics.
A weakness of this book concerns how some of the concepts are presented. In other words, the author introduces some new ideas at the end of some of the chapters in the "problems" section rather than in the main text. However, overall, I think this book provides valuable information that can benefit many people, even those who have a minimal economics background. The author presents a reasonably clear explanation of the subject matter covered which includes providing a glossary at the end of each chapter.

Whether you need to use this to get through ECON 300 or a more advanced econ class this is a very useful how-to guide. There is little discussion of theory and no yakking -- just straightforward microeconomic problems and parables. Use it for review or to get you through your final exam. Very helpful and much clearer than your textbook.

For a little more money I would have received the whole student support package including the CD ROM, the book was in good shape but other sites include more infomation when you purchase.
This isn't a text book, it's an indoctrination -- and full of mistakes too!.......2006-04-30
Even though I agree with many of the opinions that Boyes expresses in his book, I dare say that he does not know the difference between an opinion and a fact. Teaching this sort of thinking to our impressionable college students is dangerous at best and disastrous at worst. College is a place where kids are supposed to be taught how to think. Indoctrination of our youth is the worst kind of sin because we are condemning the next generation to a lifetime of limited thought and stagnation of progress.
There are many controversial topics in Economics. For most of them, Boyes only tells the student his own point of view. Nevermind the point of view of anyone else. This book even goes as far as including an EDITORIAL at the end of every chapter.
Also disturbing, this book is full of mistakes. Mathematical errors, incorrect data, etc. I found at least two mistakes in every chapter. Most mistakes were minor, and a few were major.
My thoughts on Boyes/Melvin's Microeconomics, Fourth Edition.......2000-02-07
I am a student in college who has purchased and read Boyes/Melvin's Microeconmics, Fourth Edition. I regard the book to be of inferior quality and sloppy. Although I can understand the concepts coming from the text, the writing itself is inherently poor. There are many examples of the authors misusing words, mispelling words, and making the text generally more complicated than it needs to be. To professors looking for a microeconomics textbook, please look elsewhere, for I am not the only student who has encountered these problems at my school. Thankyou.

Pindyck's textbook needs more solved problems.......2007-01-13
This text uses clearly-written definitions and lots of colorful charts. However, it is missing a crucial element for learning the subject of microeconomics: lots of problems worked out in a clear and systematic manner. I had to buy a Schaum's guide to make up for this deficiency.
Great book, AS AN INTRODUCTION.......2006-12-17
This book is truly a good book. It goes through all major areas of microeconomics in a very fathomable fashion. The point is that this book is introductory in my opinion, and when reviewed as such, I find it to be very good.
The illustrations and explanations are good, the use of examples and tying the theory to real-world occurences makes the subject matter easy to grasp.
The only gripe I have with this book is that it should indeed carry a little more calculus for precision. Having it in appendixes is actually a good idea in my opinion, but those should explain the math needed a little better, and the book itself should also explain a little more clearly that the approach of the book is a simplification of what they'll find in intermediate/advanced texts on the subject, math/calculus is unavoidable.
Anyway, if you have the time and find calculus to be a bit rough, use this book, it'll teach you the basics. If you already know som calculus and words like "Lagrange" doesn't scare the hell out of you, get something a bit more advanced, as you will need that later anyway. Frank Cowell's book on the subject is very much reccomended if you're good at the basics and know a little Microeconomic theory already.

I thought that the delivery time could have been a little sooner because it took a week and i paid for expedited shipping. I needed it for school but I got along without it. The book was in great condition and it was exactly what I needed. The price was great. For this book and the other book that it came with, the school was charging $175.00 so i got a great deal. i am definitely buying my books from amazon again.
