Book Description
This book examines in detail the resource management problems and challenges posed by the intensification of the environmental change process in coastal areas around the globe. The analysis deployed is by and large buttressed by methods and techniques drawn from social science disciplines: economics, geography, and psychology. However, the overall approach adopted is multidisciplinary with additional contributions from the natural sciences and statistics. The key concept developed is that of ecosystem function value diversity and its management policy analogue, ecosystem integrity maintenance, and the consequent sustainable utilisation of coastal system assets. The functioning of healthy ecosystems generates a range of outputs which society values. The individual chapters analyse and evaluate a range of coastal and water resource functions across different temporal and spatial scales.
Book Description
The second edition of i Coastal Planning and Management /i provides a comprehensive toolkit for both coastal professionals and students of coastal management. br br The important link between coastal planning and management is presented, with emphasis on tools for the development, evaluation and implementation of all key types of coastal management plans. Customer Reviews:
Great coastal management book.......2005-11-07
As a coastal manager it's really hard to find information that presents good theoretical stuff next to down to earth examples. It's usually one or the other. This book has both right in one spot. This book lives on my desk, not on the bookshelf!
Coastal planning and management.......2001-02-10
i thoroughly enjoyed this book. content is based on the direction of coastal management and implementation of planning mechanisms around the globe. the text is supported with case studies from locations all around the globe, providing a global analysis. the style of writing is very informative, with exceptional detail - and quoting sources to allow confirmation of the text content. it is quite clear that both authors are extremely active and interested in the field of coastal management, with a 'hands-on' approach taken with each of the case studies included. a nice touch, is the use of images and diagrams to highlight certain aspects, providing ease of understanding - these thoroughly supporting the text. this book takes a step by step approach to introduce the reader to the complex issues and intricacies involved with coastal management and planning, opening the door to the next century. a thoroughly enjoyable read - definitely recommended!!

Book Description
An Introduction to Coastal Zone Management, Second Edition offers a comprehensive overview of coastal planning and management issues for students and professionals in the field. Since publication of the first edition in 1994, population growth and increasing development pressures on our coasts have made the need for forward-looking, creative, and sustainable visions for the future even greater. This completely updated and revised edition includes:
- significantly updated data and statistics including discussions of population and growth trends, federal and state coastal expenditures, disaster assistance expenditures, and damage levels from hurricanes and coastal storms
- updated legislative and programmatic material, including the Stafford Act and mitigation assistance programs, and changes in the Coastal Zone Management Act
- expanded coverage of physical and biological attributes and conditions of the coastal zone
- expanded and updated discussions of innovative local coastal management
- new chapters on creative coastal design and development and lessons from coastal programs in other countries
An Introduction to Coastal Zone Management, Second Edition is the only available book that addresses the serious coastal trends and pressures in the U.S., assesses the current policy and planning framework, and puts forth a compelling vision for future management and sustainable coastal planning. It is an important resource for undergraduate and graduate students of coastal planning as well as for local and state officials, residents of coastal communities, environmental advocates, developers, and others concerned with coastal issues.
Customer Reviews:
A scholarly and comprehensive look at the complex problems.......2002-09-08
Now in a second edition with updated statistics, references to legislation, discussions, and new knowledge about creative coastal design, and collaboratively written by Timothy Beatley (Professor, Department of Urban and Environmental Planning, University of Virginia), David J. Bower (Research Professor, Department of City and Regional Planning, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill); and Anna K. Schwab (Research Associate, Department of City and Regional Planning, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill), An Introduction To Coastal Zone Management is a scholarly and comprehensive look at the complex problems of environmental management of coastal areas. Written for students and professionals, An Introduction to Coastal Zone Management covers a wealth of topics including shoreline erosion, lake stratification, coastal sprawl, and much, much more. An Introduction To Coastal Zone Management is very highly recommended reading for anyone with a determined interest in the field and an essential addition to Environmental Studies academic reference collections.
A great intro.......2001-01-30
As a student of geography, I was given the opportunity to do some shoreline management work for the local county. Although I had taken some classes regarding shorelines, I needed a crash course in coastal management, and I was pointed to this book. Within two days, I knew as much as I needed to know about coastal issues.
The book covers a wide variety of issues, ranging from the history of coastal population concentration, environmental issues, private property rights, and zoning and other useful information for the planner. This book gave me a great introductory knowledge, and was able to satisfy most of my questions.
I recommend this book to anyone who thinks they may be interested in Shoreline Management, City or Urban Planning, or Environmental or Population issues.

Book Description
Coastal ecosystems make up some of the most important, yet most endangered, regions in the world. The protection of the unique processes that take place in these ecosystems requires that partnerships be formed among ecologists, resource managers, and planners.
Experienced in the challenges of coastal system analysis, the contributors to this book provide multidisciplinary guidance on the assessment and management of environmental impacts caused by development. Each chapter examines an issue important to these fragile ecosystems, first presenting a non-technical summary of the issue and a review of the current state of the knowledge, then following with data and a more detailed consideration of the topic. Functioning both as a practical guide, accessible to nonscientists, and as a rigorous scientific source book,
Changing Land Use Patterns in the Coastal Zone will be useful to ecologists, urban and regional planners, resource managers, policymakers and students. While many of the case studies included in this volume are drawn from studies in the southeastern United States, the examples and lessons provided will be relevant to those working in all coastal environments.
About the Editors:
G. S. Kleppel is Professor and Director of the Biodiversity, Conservation and Policy Program at the State University of New York at Albany. M. Richard DeVoe is Executive Director of the South Carolina Sea Grant Consortium in Charleston, South Carolina. Mac V. Book Description
The Gulf coast of Florida and Alabama is a fragile combination of barrier islands, low-lying marshes, and highly erodable mainland shores. In addition to sea-level rise, winter storms, and altered sediment supplies, hurricanes frequently damage or destroy the human developments and infrastructures that line this coast. Indeed, a single storm can cause billions of dollars in losses. Memories of such hurricanes as Camille, Frederic, Opal, and Andrew cause great concern for residents and property owners alike; events of equal magnitude are always just beyond the horizon and the uninformed have much to lose.
The authors of Living on the Edge of the Gulf seek to counteract potential loss by providing an illustrated introduction to coastal processes, a history of hazards for the region, and risk-reduction guidance in the form of site evaluations, community mitigation techniques, and storm-resistant construction practices. Risk maps that focus on individual coastal beaches are designed to assist property owners, community planners, and officials in prudent decision making, while a review of coastal regulations helps owners to understand and navigate various permit requirements.
This latest book in the Living with the Shore series replaces the earlier guide Living with the West Florida Shore and supplements the Alabama portion of Living with the Alabama/Mississippi Shore.

Book Description
This succinct, technical reference of coastal zone resource management is aimed both at students taking courses in coastal management or marine conservation and practitioners in these fields. In response to a world-wide demand, Coastal Seas deals mostly with methodology and provides practitioners, scholars and students with the ideas, tools, materials and strategies needed to manage coastal resources and shoreline development. Although tropical developing nations have the greatest need for this book, the principles are universal and will be of interest and relevance to all.
