"There has obviously been some kind of mistake," writes Alexander T. Wolf from the pig penitentiary where he's doing time for his alleged crimes of 10 years ago. Here is the "real" story of the three little pigs whose houses are huffed and puffed to smithereens... from the wolf's perspective. This poor, much maligned wolf has gotten a bad rap. He just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, with a sneezy cold, innocently trying to borrow a cup of sugar to make his granny a cake. Is it his fault those ham dinners--rather, pigs--build such flimsy homes? Sheesh.

This 10th-anniversary edition of Jon Scieszka's New York Times Best Book of the Year, The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs!, includes a special, impassioned letter from prisoner A. Wolf himself and a snappy new jacket by Caldecott Honor artist Lane Smith, whose quirky perspectives still color the illustrations throughout. As with The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales, the collaborators take a classic story and send it through the wisecracker machine, much to the glee of kids young and old. (Ages 4 to 8 or much, much older) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

In this best-selling collaboration between author (and performer) Jon Scieszka and illustrator Lane Smith, with music by noted composer Kurt Hoffman, you will hear Alexander T. Wolf tell the story from his point of view. Side one features narration and music, while side two has music alone, so that you can read it out loud by yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Really funny twist to an old classic.......2007-10-09

Many think of the story "The three little pigs" as a worn out fairy tale. This book puts a new twist to the tale by adding a different point of view ... particularly from the WOLF's side. My children "howl" at the wolfs version of his mistreatment and being so misunderstood by the world. Opens ears of kids to listen to both sides and make up your mind as to what really happens..... my kids determined the wolf was full of it and the pigs in the end win out in their minds. Very funny book.

4 out of 5 stars Perhaps more funny for adults than for pre-schoolers.......2007-08-30

I really like Jon Scienszka - especially _The Stinky Cheese Man and other tales_; but I suspect his stories are geared for a slightly older audience (age 5 and up) than for younger children, as the humor in _The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs_ is a bit sophisticated for younger (and more literal) children.

With that said, the premise - that the Big Bad Wolf is misunderstood, and the deaths of the 3 Little Pigs was just a big misunderstanding - is great: I like the idea of teaching children to empathize and think beyond the literal. And certainly children will develop this as they grow. I do recommend the book - the art, the story and the telling of it are masterfully done. However think about the relative intellectual maturity of the audience before buying ... it may be good wine before its time.

5 out of 5 stars This version will blow you away!.......2007-08-19

Poor Big Bad Wolf - he always gets a bad rap. But now he is here telling his side of the story. According to him, it's all about a sneeze and a cup of sugar. Once again, Smith's illustrations are highly amusing, as is the story of a misunderstood wolf who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time (Riiiiiiiight). I love how the story has been jazzed up with phrases such as - "Can you believe it? I mean, who in his right mind would build a house of straw?" (as said by the wolf). This book really is short and sweet and hopefully it will make readers think about whose side of the story is correct.

5 out of 5 stars A New Point of View on an Old Story.......2007-08-03

My children (ages 12, 8 and 5) had gotten this book from the library, but since they continued to read it over and over again, I thought we should have our own copy. It is a very clever story of the Three Little Pigs told from the wolf's point of view. As enjoyable it is for the children, it's just as enjoyable for the adult reading with them.

5 out of 5 stars Grandmother's input.......2007-07-28

I bought this for my grandchildren, a boy who is eight and a girl who is seven. They like books so I was curious about their reaction. They both liked the story and the pictures. Their mother was particularly impressed. The humor is appropriate for children and for adults so I would recommend this for any age. It will make you smile.

5 out of 5 stars ALL THE INFORMATION YOU NEED!!.......2007-04-01

This is an excellent book, which I really recommend to buy! It contains all the information required to emmigrate, live and work in Australia. Is written in a friendly language and has several useful websites and phone numbers. If you are thinking of emmigrate to Australia or you are already living there, this is the book for you!

5 out of 5 stars Very practical and TONS of information!.......2007-01-10

We are looking to migrate to Australia and wanted to do our research. This book gives practical information on everything from visas to schools to jobs. It gives lots of useful facts that will help anyone looking to move to Australia - such as your drivers license is generally accepted for up to one year, you don't have to get a new one until then! Info on car insurance, cable and phone companies, bus routes, ferry service, PHONE NUMBERS AND WEBSITES! This is THE book to get if you are going to be moving to Australia or visiting long term. Hands down.

4 out of 5 stars Almost perfect handbook for newcomers to Australia.......2006-08-09

I moved to Australia from Israel, and this book was of great help.

Cultural idiosyncrasies are explained to minimise "culture shock", and possible problems are not avoided (despite the fact that the book is associated with a migration agency as I understood). I'ld say that sometimes the warnings are more like disclaimers, but I guess better safe than sorry. "To do" lists are used where applicable - great help when you're in a new environment thinking what to do next.

Another major "pro" is that this book is not just for people from UK or US or other Anglo-Saxon background. The author takes a generic, explain-it-all approach.

One thing which I think the author should change is the migration section. This is the reason I didn't give it 5 stars. This is no author's fault, of course, but the migration laws in Australia are changing at lightning speed - so there is no point to depict them in such detail. Furthermore, as much of the information in that section was hopelessly obsolete already in 2004 (for 2004 edition), it is plain misleading. Future readers - consult official sources instead, but for the rest, you can safely rely on this book.

Otherwise, I couldn't think of a better source of information.

5 out of 5 stars From someone who actually used it.......2001-06-14

I bought this book when I found out that my company had actually agreed to transfer me to Australia ... but they were giving me very little help in what to expect. This book is not a "travel" guide. It's a practical guide on how to settle down in Australia - things like, how to get a drivers licence, where to apply for a tax file number, even how to do a hook turn in Melbourne. It has never steered me wrong, and I've recommended it to many expat friends.

A must-have if you're thinking about moving there.

5 out of 5 stars the title says it all.......2000-01-23

Having read a number of publications of similar approach I must admit this one's outstanding. The information provided is not only considering almost every single aspect of living in Oz, but most important: it's (imho) spot-on and even pretty much up-to-date. David's writing is fun and easy to read and I would recommend this book to everyone on the move down under.

Allison Pearson's debut novel, I Don't Know How She Does It, is a rare and beautiful hybrid: a devastatingly funny novel that's also a compelling fictional world. You want to climb inside this book and inhabit it. However, you might find it pretty messy once you're in there. Narrator Kate Reddy is the manager of a hedge fund and mother of two small children. The book opens with an emblematic scene as Kate "distresses" a store-bought mince pie to make it appear homemade. Her days are measured in increments of minutes and even seconds; her fund stays organized but her house and family are falling apart. The book is a pearly string of great lines. Here's Kate on lack of sleep: "They're right to call it a broken night.... You crawl back to bed and you lie there trying to do the jigsaw of sleep with half the pieces missing." On baby boys: "A mother of a one-year-old son is a movie star in a world without critics." On subtle office dynamics:
The women in the offices of EMF [Kate's firm] don't tend to display pictures of their kids. The higher they go up the ladder, the fewer the photographs. If a man has pictures of kids on his desk, it enhances his humanity; if a woman has them it decreases hers. Why? Because he's not supposed to be home with the children; she is.
There's inherent drama here: Kate is wildly appealing, and we want things to work out for her. In the end, the book isn't a just collection of clever lines on the theme of working motherhood; it's a real, rich novel about a character we come to cherish. --Claire Dederer

      Book Description

Delightfully smart and heartbreakingly poignant, Allison Pearson’s smash debut novel has exploded onto bestseller lists as “The national anthem for working mothers.” Hedge-fund manager, wife, and mother of two, Kate Reddy manages to juggle nine currencies in five time zones and keep in step with the Teletubbies. But when she finds herself awake at 1:37 a.m. in a panic over the need to produce a homemade pie for her daughter’s school, she has to admit her life has become unrecognizable. With panache, wisdom, and uproarious wit, I Don’t Know How She Does It brilliantly dramatizes the dilemma of every working mom.

      Download Description

For every woman trying to strike that impossible balance between work and home -- and pretending that she has -- and for every woman who has wanted to hurl the acquaintance who coos admiringly, "Honestly, I just don't know how you do it," out a window, here's a novel to make you cringe with recognition and laugh out loud. With fierce, unsentimental irony, Allison Pearson's novel brilliantly dramatizes the dilemma of working motherhood at the start of the twenty-first century.

Meet Kate Reddy, hedge-fund manager and mother of two. She can juggle nine different currencies in five different time zones and get herself and two children washed and dressed and out of the house in half an hour. In Kate's life, Everything Goes Perfectly as long as Everything Goes Perfectly. She lies to her own mother about how much time she spends with her kids; practices pelvic floor squeezes in the boardroom; applies tips from Toddler Taming to soothe her irascible boss; uses her cell phone in the office bathroom to procure a hamster for her daughter's birthday ("Any working mother who says she doesn't bribe her kids can add Liar to her résumé"); and cries into the laundry hamper when she misses her children's bedtime.

In a novel that is at once uproariously funny and achingly sad, Allison Pearson captures the guilty secret lives of working women -- the self-recrimination, the comic deceptions, the giddy exhaustion, the despair -- as no other writer has. Kate Reddy's conflict -- How are we meant to pass our days? How are we to reconcile the two passions, work and motherhood, that divide our lives? -- gets at the private absurdities of working motherhood as only a novel could: with humor, drama, and bracing wisdom.

      5 out of 5 stars Just what I needed to read as a juggling mom-professional-wife ... .......2007-10-05

I read this book a couple of years ago, and I laughed A LOT because I related to much to it. I recommended it to one of my best friends, who is exactly like the protagonist.
Bottom line, I'm only going to say that it was an entertaining read that felt like "hey, I'm not the only one!" and I appreciated it.
As a reader I seek to either get lost in other worlds or see mine reflected in it. It was the second case with this one!
If you are a mother, if you work, if you have a husband (or even if you don't), if you feel like you're juggling it all and one of the balls will eventually drop, just read this book!

      1 out of 5 stars I don't know why she wrote it.......2007-09-11

This is not a book to put down lightly. It is one to have the pages stripped out and line the bottom of one's parakeet cage. This was one of the worst books I've ever read. I bought it to read the genera of I guess soap opera literature. I will not judge another woman on anything she does, but Kate is neurotic and married to a beta man and she seems to sail with no rudder. A scene between her mother and a judge near the end is supposed to impress us as some empowering motherhood thing, but in the US, you'd get booted out of court over it and a stiff fine. I couldn't imagine her saying that to one of the terrifying white wigged judges in England.

Poor character development and a bad reflection on women everywhere. This seems to have been put out by someone against motherhood and working.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining but untypical portrait of working mums.......2007-07-05

This was fun chick lit but the ultimate message it imparts is that women must have their own business to hope for work/life balance. The truth is that a high-powered corporate job is often incompatible with being a hands-on mom. The only real "aha" for Kate was discovering that but then she went with an "all or nothing" solution and ignored the financial realities she'd talked about in the past. I didn't really like Kate as a character and a person. She was not true to herself, her family or her marriage. She lacked integrity and I wasn't sure she achieved it, even at the end.

1 out of 5 stars I know how she does it - she has help.......2007-07-03

I was expecting a totally different book, to be quite honest. I wasn't expecting a mother who "juggled" work and housework and all with help and plenty of money. She has a nanny and a housecleaner! Granted, her housecleaner for some reason can't clean hardly anything beyond what's directly in front of her, but she can still afford help nonetheless. And the ending? I thought it defeated the entire purpose of the book.

Honestly, I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone. Thank goodness I borrowed it and didn't waste my money on it.

      5 out of 5 stars loved it!.......2007-06-29

I don't how the book ended up in my house but I took it on vacation and loved it! At first I was a little confused by the terminology in the book before I realized it is based in London. Although to me Kate got a little annoying with the kids and hubby, and I for entertainments sake wish her relationship with Abelhammer could have gone a teensy bit futher. I really enjoyed the book.

This book is amusing but not spectacular, I would go for the street magic, Mindfreak and blaine books for something more espectacular. Decent for beginers.

3 out of 5 stars More Than Expected.......2007-03-26

I purchased this book thinking that it would be a good beginning magic book for a group of middle schoolers interested in learning magic tricks. It seems that even though the objects are everyday, the tricks are not. This is a great book if you are willing to do the practice to master the tricks, but if you are looking for a quick trick, then keep looking.

      3 out of 5 stars A decent beginners book.......2005-10-28

Karl Fulves has been putting out these kinds of books for what seems like an eternity. They are good books for kids and even a skilled performer can pull some good material from these books.

Many beginners to magic (and others who should know better) are of the opinion that a magic effect has to be difficult in order to be worthwhile. While there are many killer effects that take months or years of practice, there are equally wonderful tricks that rely on psychology, subtlety, and/or advance preparation. The Self Working series of books are a treasure trove of great magic. This book is no exception. Many of the included tricks are used by successful professional magicians. Admittedly, these are best used in a program with other, more elaborate tricks, but for those moments in your act where you need a short, sweet effect, something in this book might just fill the bill. And as you get more proficient in magic you will find ways to further embellish these tricks and make them your own private miracles.

      4 out of 5 stars Helpful material.......2007-10-11

While the slant on this book is very American; it is a useful tool for people wanting to know about the reality of the third culture world. The author does attempt to include an international perspective. A good start for anyone researching this topic for the first time or experiencing this cultural phenomenon themselves. Worth the investment.

5 out of 5 stars "Must read" foranyone living outside your home Nation!.......2007-04-08

If you are raising children outside your home Nation, this book will help you understand and assist your children with their unique experiences living in the invisible "third" culture. If you or your spouse grew up in a Country foreign to their parents, this book may help illuminate emotions and behaviors that never quite made sense before (especially from the perspective of those of us who always lived in the same house!). This book is in english, but it is not about Americans only, but anyone from one Nation who spend several years or more of childhood in a second Nation. Should be a staple in every military, ambassadorial, or mission complex library!

5 out of 5 stars it's an autobiography for tcks.......2007-03-23

I am a tck and I have met Mrs. Van Reken. She is brilliant, and her book helped me through many of my adolescent identity struggles. I have passed it along to friends and parents of tcks and everyone seems to agree that it is both interesting, thought-provoking, and helpful.

5 out of 5 stars The missing link........2007-02-11

If you grew up in another country and have always felt a as though something is missing in your life, this book holds answers.

5 out of 5 stars Putting it into words........2007-02-08

I recently found out about this book and the term TCK. As an American who spent the majority of the first ten years of my life growing up in Scotland, it felt so comforting to find out that there is a whole community of people out there like me, and that our common experiences have a name. Also, as someone who never thought I'd read another "textbook" after graduating college, this book has definitely changed my mind. It's a great balance of expert language and personal story, perfect for TCKs or ATCKs just discovering who they are, non TCKs who share their lives with TCKs, parents of TCKs, and any educator or professional in an international setting. I consider this book to be the definitive publication on my life experience, and those like me.

        Book Description

This book describes how therapists can both facilitate constructive play therapy and intervene in posttraumatic play to help children who have been traumatized by abuse or neglect achieve a positive resolution. Traditional techniques of play therapy are reviewed for their application to this population. Throughout, numerous therapeutic aids are described to enhance the child's capacity to communicate verbally or symbolically. To help clinicians translate theory into daily practice, the book presents six detailed clinical vignettes that offer step-by-step guidelines for assessment and intervention in different situations of abuse or neglect.

5 out of 5 stars A must read if working with children.......2006-03-20

This is a must read if you are working with children. The author is one whom I consider the best in the field. It clearly defines all the basic principles of working with abused children and helps the new practitioner become familiar with the appropriate jargon in the field of play therapy. This is the "bible" of child therapy in my opinion and is priceless.

5 out of 5 stars List of Reasons this is a good book:.......2005-05-31

I love this book and this author. I recommend looking at her other books!

Gil writes about many different types of child abuse. Her book is easily accessible because Gil separates her chapters into very understandable sub-headings. This makes it very easy to go back and search for a certain part. She also makes good use of bullets for simple lists and graphics of characteristics a child may show.

Gil implements a variety of case studies into the text (there's also a section dedicated simply to case studies) to show her point. She also cites many other physiatrist works to back up her points.

Gil does not just write about "the affects of child abuse," and how "traumatic child abuse is to children." She also gives an abundance of suggestions of what to do during therapy. She also includes her own outlines of "Therapeutic Goal" for each of her Case Studies at the end of the book.

I highly recommend "The Healing Power of Play."

5 out of 5 stars child of abuse.......2004-03-06

I am a victim of sexual abuse. I have read books like NIGHTMARES ECHO,BEAUTY FOR ASHES and COURAGE TO HEAL to find help in my adult life to get over what happened to me as a child. Abuse doesn't just go away and the demons do haunt. When I found out about this book, I bought it as soon as I could.
I am very pleased there is a book like this available for the children now...rather than later down the road when the impact of abuse has taken its hold on them.
I do recommend that all Parents,Teachers etc. buy this book as well as the other two I had mentioned. Though NIGHTMARES ECHO and BEAUTY FOR ASHES are more adult oriented, I think that the parent, teacher, spuse etc can learn from these books and then help the child to over come the abuse with THE HEALING POWER OF PLAY.
I think this book was written well, and written for the regular reader to understand with out all of the large words that can confuse.

        5 out of 5 stars A classic.......2001-04-14

This is a must-have modern classic for the library of anyone working professionally with abused children. I would also recommend this book for the insight it provides to anyone adopting a child who may have gone through trauma or abuse. Clearly written, backed up with thorough research and guided by sensitive clinical skills, Eliana Gil's work is a primer on helping children work through trauma using their main mode of expression, play. If I could recommend only one book for training young professsionals embarking on the challenging and rewarding journey of helping kids who have been abused, this would be it.

5 out of 5 stars Eliana Gil has a wonderful amount of insight to children.......1997-06-30

This book is a treasure for the beginning play therapist, as well as the experienced clinician working with issues of abuse. A work sprinkled with fascinating case examples and intriguing stories, this book is truly a must have for therapists
