4 out of 5 stars Fibonnaci Primer.......2007-05-18

I wanted to understand how to use Fibonacci in my trading, as well as when not to use it. Michael Jardine does a solid job of conveying the information a beginner to Fibonacci would want to know. I am sure there are better and more indepth Fibonacci trading books, but I dont believe that you could manage to keep the information accessible to new and early traders AND show how it is used, whilst going to the deep end of the pool regarding some of the uses for Fibonacci. At the end of the day, Traders, specifically commodities traders, want the ability to do technical analysis and technical forecasting to know when to 'get in' and when to 'get out' of a trade. Michael Jardine provides a solid basis for an early trader to gain knowledge and methods on how to do that through the use of Fibonacci. Please keep in mind however, that many of the trades that Mr. Jardine executes in this book are what I would term 'scalping' and require a much more precise hand at executing trades and much more 'nerve' to practice regularly then what other trading books teach. I would recommend this book to a new student of Trading, but only insofar as it is one of a dozen other books.

5 out of 5 stars New Frontiers in Fibonacci Trading: Charting Techniques, Strategies & Simple Applications.......2007-02-15

Excellently written book. Described in laymen terms, I found this book to be the best I have ever read on any stock market subject. I highly recommend it, and refuse to lend mine to anyone.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing fantastic, an okay introduction for beginners.......2007-02-14

After reading some of the other reviews I thought the book would be a lot better than it was. While it does give a good introduction to Fibonacci and some of its uses, I found the book a bit hard to put into practice into my own trading. There are a lot of examples of specific trades and what went right and what went wrong. Maybe it needs another read to absorb all the information. But my impression after finishing the book was that using this approach to trade doesn't really improve your chances in isolation but must be used with other indicators to even be useful. So while the book doesn't make any promises, if you are dedicated, disciplined and willing to learn this way of trading, then maybe it might suit your style of personality and trading. While its all very interesting I didn't feel it suited my trading style.

4 out of 5 stars A good book about Fibonacci trading.......2006-02-13

This is a solid 4-star book. I thought that I would learn something new about trading Fib levels, unfortunately no - most of the techniques are discused on the forums or are writted by Dinapoli or Fischer. But anyway, all the information is relevant and can be applied to real life trading, and the author adds some more trading tips and strategies.

5 out of 5 stars Very interesing book .......2005-09-04

It's really as it claimsto be. New Frontiers in Fibonacci Trading . I read it once, but will need to read it againandagain. every time you read achapter you find something new

Book Description

"An impressive collection. Roderick M. Kramer and Tom R. Tyler have brought together a set of forefront studies that illuminate the causes and consequences of trusting behavior. This book will help shape the agenda for many years." --Mayer N. Zald, Department of Sociology, University of Michigan "Trust is like bone in an organization--undergirding, supporting, and enabling flesh and blood growth and function. This volume does a remarkable job of illustrating how healthy (versus unhealthy) trust systems develop and of tracing the profound consequences. It represents an invaluable resource for professionals interested in the dynamics of organizational effectiveness." --Robert B. Cialdini, Regents Professor of Psychology, Arizona State University "Roderick Kramer and Tom Tyler have produced an authoritative and stimulating collection of essays that raise the critical questions about trust. In the process, they challenge rational choice and social science generally to develop better models of negotiation and decisionmaking. Trust in Organizations goes a long way towards providing the foundations for such theorizing." --Margaret Levi, Department of Political Science, University of Washington Organizational theorists have long recognized the central role that trust plays in organizational life. They have noted that trust facilitates exchanges among individuals, enhances cooperation and coordination, and contributes to more effective social and organizational relationships. Researchers agree that there is a need for a better understanding of trust in organizations. Trust in Organizations is an essential guide that will provide students and professionals in organization studies, management, and public administration with a wealth of knowledge concerning the importance of trust. Editors Roderick M. Kramer and Tom R. Tyler have assembled a cross-disciplinary group of scholars--from social psychology, behavioral economics, sociology, and organizational theory--to bring together some of the newest and most exciting conceptual perspectives in this field. These contributions also reflect a variety of new methodological approaches to the study of trust. This volume's broad coverage includes discussion of the psychological and social antecedents of trust, the effects of social and organizational structures on trust, and the broad effects of trust on organizational functioning.

This volume is vitrually the only work dealing specifically with trust in the organizational context. Much research on this construct takes a) a purely psychological approach, or b) a philosophical view. This volume provides multiple perspectives useful for the organizational theorist or manager looking for a deeper insight. Not a lightweight -- a seminal text for trust researchers.

Book Description

A celebrated university finance professor discusses the valuation of all investments not just securities. This up-to-the-minute text uses examples from a diversity of existing companies to demonstrate the use of the models as well as their possible pitfalls. Thoroughly examines firms where direct application of typical models traditionally breakdown--problems in valuing these enterprises are laid out and potential solutions suggested. Special sections deal with valuation issues that have not received adequate coverage such as the value of synergy in controlling mergers and the value of product options that a company may possess. Includes optional software developed and tested by the author.

1 out of 5 stars Garbage In, Garbage Out.......2002-03-21

Good work, if only it was reliable... In a discipline where accuracy is so important, I am amazed it has been selling so well for so long. The book has plenty of formulae mistakes that make its reading and comprehension really difficult and painfully time-consuming as you need to go through correcting all those errors and read the chapters again and again. Still, even after such an arduous work, you end up not being 100% sure that what you have learnt is correct. Wiley should long ago have retired this edition from circulation and then market a new, thoroughly corrected one. Of course, those (many) unlucky readers who have bought this terrible (paperback) edition should receive a new one for free as soon as it is available. I feel I have been cheated!

3 out of 5 stars Investment Valuation - University Edition.......2002-02-08

In his book, Aswath Damodaran sets out to explain how assets (both real and financial) are valued using for means to aid the reader in his or her understanding:

1. To cover the different approaches that can be taken to value assets
2. To provide a framework to decide which approach is most appropriate for valuing a particular asset
3. To provide examples of how particular assets are valued
4. To make each approach self-contained, although not entirely independent of one another

One the whole, the author succeeds in his attempt to demonstrate how someone can approach asset valuation. For the most part the author approaches the valuation process from the foundation of determining the present value of all future cash flows from an asset. It is the sum of the present values of the expected future cash flows that determines the asset's worth.

While the author successfully applies the principles of asset valuation in the book, a number of shortcomings make this book less than ideal for use in a course on security analysis. After introducing the reader to the approaches he plans to cover in the book, the author launches into a discussion of the relationship between the risks of owning an asset and the returns expected from the asset in chapter 3. This chapter includes an explanation of the Capital Asset Pricing Model, one of the foundations of modern finance theory. Such a rapid exposure to modern finance may leave readers wondering if they are in over their heads. Normally, such discussions are left for a later chapter after a discussion of financial statements and ratio analysis.

Furthermore, the author tackles the estimation of discount rates without first providing us with a discussion of the financial instruments that are sold in the marketplace whose costs of financing typically compose the discount rate.

Still, the book is worthwhile to read for those who are already familiar with the concepts of finance and the time value of money and who want to learn more about how assets are valued. The book also can be used in an upper-level finance class devoted to asset valuation.

This book is/was required for the CFA program.
Those requirers were required to print pages of errata.
Many essential formulas are simply wrong, presumably from sloppiness. Reading the book is a lot like correcting a high schooler's homework.
All this courtesy of an organization that publishes its own performance presentation standards and generally, high-handedly nitpicks.

3 out of 5 stars (not) disappointed - Update.......2001-11-26

Apologies to Mr Damodaran, further to my last 'scathing' review, I have since discovered that Mr Damodaran has conveniently posted the entire Solutions manual to this book on his website.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2001-11-19

Unfortunately this book has been selected as one of our reading materials for a certain examination I am currently studying for. The worked examples in the book are not always clear which is fair enough, as it is not the first such book. Normally this problem is ironed out by working thru the set problems at the back of each chapter. What is very DISAPPOINTING about this text is that it is the only one in our entire syllabus of reading materials that does not have a Solutions Manual to help with our studying. Mr Damodaran has not bothered making the effort to produce one it seems.

1 out of 5 stars Too boring to read.......2007-10-02

I had to buy and read this book for a class in school, and I can say, it is probably the most boring book that I have ever read. I cannot stand to read it, the information is good, but its just written in such a bland and biased way, the author sounds like a total hippie who thinks we should all still be living in tribes in the forest.

1 out of 5 stars this book is something else............2004-02-25

i think - it is impossible to write a book with such a great subject more boring and annoying than Bodley did.....the telephone book seems more appealing to me.........

5 out of 5 stars Other Worlds.......2003-09-11

This book is amazing in what it achieves - a thorough, comprehensive view of expansive, global civilization and its affects on local, indigenous, autonomous peoples around the world. Bodley clearly and succinctly summaries the last two and a half centuries of colonial and imperial expansion, the people who resisted and continue to resist that expansion, and the negative consequences of being incorporated (usually by force) into large, impersonal, irresponsible nation-states. A must read for anyone who wishes to step outside our consumer-frenzied, totalitarian culture of domination and see what other worlds were and are possible.

Book Description

MASS CUSTOMIZATION--the trailblazing book that showed companies how to mass-produce and individually customize their products and services--is now available in paperback. New ways of managing, together with new technology, make possible the seeming paradox of providing each customer with the "tailor-made" benefits of the pre-industrial craft system at the low costs of modern mass production. As author Joe Pine makes clear, businesses that learn to embrace mass customization are able to create greater variety and customization in their products and services at competitive prices, or better. This insightful book shows how it's done. Also available in hardcover; ISBN 0875843727, $35.00.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic for Internet Entrepreneurs.......2005-08-13

Fantastic! The fact that this book was written in 1993 is particularly astounding, as its ideas are still cutting edge today. Internet entrepreneurs need to read, re-read, and workshop this book, as it is particularly useful from both a practical and conceptual standpoint in helping companies realize how their business models need to change once they begin to participate in markets where supply is infinite -- an issue that strikes at the core of e-commerce.

3 out of 5 stars Essential Concept Related to Production.......2004-02-08

This book contains a winning formula for production industry to success under the dynamic economic environment and rapid changing consumer taste.

Joseph is prescient to identify an important trend on production since 1993. Although this book was written a decade ago, ¡§Mass Customization¡¨ still occupies a crucial position on maintaining an effective and efficient production line.

In this book, Joseph first introduced the main trend on production before 1970s, which was ¡§Mass Production¡¨. Then, he mentioned the change on production from ¡§Mass Production¡¨ to ¡§Mass Customization¡¨. He used a comprehensive comparison to locate the distinctive advantages of applying ¡§Mass Customization¡¨.

After persuading audience how imperative the change was. Joseph suggested three directions for companies to plan for their change: ¡§Move Incrementally¡¨, ¡§Transform the Business¡¨ and ¡§Create New Business¡¨. He also suggested five fundamental methods for companies to implement their change.

As the product life cycle becomes shorter and shorter, especially for technology related products, companies can¡¦t use only the ¡§Push¡¨ strategy to produce their product. However, they also can¡¦t produce their products only when receiving an order. It is because there is no enough time for them to do. As a result, ¡§Mass customization¡¨ helps companies to produce a critical mass for basic elements and then assemble the final product base on customer¡¦s requirement.

Moreover, Joseph used many tables and graphs to explain his idea, which help readers to understand the concept easily. Also, he provided many subtitles that help readers to concentrate on the main idea in the following paragraph.

Furthermore, it is interesting that Joseph also customized his book too. He grouped the chapters, which based on specific objective. By this action, he reinforced the main idea of ¡§Mass Customization¡¨ and facilitated readers to read this book.

In short, this book has a clear direction and systematic layout, which guide readers to understand the full picture of changing production trend.

4 out of 5 stars useful but a bit oudated.......2001-11-06

After reading the book, I found a clearer picture about mass customization. Mass customization is now widely used by many businesses, but we may not know how it operates!
In this book, it tells you how you should change your business operation to mass customization step by step, also tell you 5 methods to customize your products or services. And these 5 methods are useful and practicable for designing how the business enter the market.
The stucture of the book is clear, give a full description on the development of the operation, from mass production to mass customization , and the pros and cons of those two operations, followed with the detail explanation on mass customization.
However, I think it's a bit outdated because all the things around us are mass customized and we do not have to decide whether we should change to customized operation or not, but to decide the degree of the customization.

4 out of 5 stars He gets it........1998-11-08

What a refreshing book that is inendated with facts and research, yet the concepts have implementable steps to move your organization into the personalization future. Indeed this author "gets it" when it comes to the individualized services and products that every company should adopt.

    Book Description

A crucial challenge for economists is figuring out how people interpret the world and form expectations that will likely influence their economic activity. Inflation, asset prices, exchange rates, investment, and consumption are just some of the economic variables that are largely explained by expectations. Here George Evans and Seppo Honkapohja bring new explanatory power to a variety of expectation formation models by focusing on the learning factor. Whereas the rational expectations paradigm offers the prevailing method to determining expectations, it assumes very theoretical knowledge on the part of economic actors. Evans and Honkapohja contribute to a growing body of research positing that households and firms learn by making forecasts using observed data, updating their forecast rules over time in response to errors. This book is the first systematic development of the new statistical learning approach.

Depending on the particular economic structure, the economy may converge to a standard rational-expectations or a "rational bubble" solution, or exhibit persistent learning dynamics. The learning approach also provides tools to assess the importance of new models with expectational indeterminacy, in which expectations are an independent cause of macroeconomic fluctuations. Moreover, learning dynamics provide a theory for the evolution of expectations and selection between alternative equilibria, with implications for business cycles, asset price volatility, and policy. This book provides an authoritative treatment of this emerging field, developing the analytical techniques in detail and using them to synthesize and extend existing research.

      Book Description

Praise for The Independent Fiduciary "Rusty Olson is a pioneer and leader in wise investing for pension funds. Institutional executives in all nations should study his experienced advice." —John M. Templeton Founder, Templeton Investment Counsel "Rusty Olson has provided a reader-friendly tour through the complex jungle of investing, pointing out both the opportunities and pitfalls that lie before the independent fiduciary. At once constructive and skeptical, his common sense—particularly the wit and wisdom of Chapter 18, `Aphorisms'—shows through this thoughtful book." —John C. Bogle Founder, The Vanguard Group "Rusty Olson is one of the best managers the fund sponsor side has ever produced. He understands the risk and reward of diverse asset classes and has the stomach to follow his convictions. He is in every sense a professional investor." —William Crerend Founder, Evaluation Associates, Inc. "I can highly recommend Rusty Olson's new book on the basis of almost twenty years' experience with him. He touches on all the bases of possible intelligent investment, by no means limiting his responsibilities to the active market of the stock exchange, NASDAQ, etc. It would seem essential that every library in the country should want to own this volume." —Roy R. Neuberger Founder, Neuberger Berman "Rusty Olson is a wise fiduciary. Drawing on his vast experience he introduces the language, concepts, and issues that every fiduciary must understand and suggests solutions to many thorny problems." —Barr Rosenberg Chairman, AXA Rosenberg Group LLC "Rusty Olson has been one of the most intense students and brilliant executors of investment opportunities and risk assessment for retirement funds. BARRA RogersCasey has had the honor to serve Rusty and Eastman Kodak for over twenty years—always learning from him. The Independent Fiduciary will evolve into Retirement Fund Investing 101 for newcomers and experienced practitioners alike." —John F. Casey Chairman, BARRA RogersCasey

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, a Truly Unique Book.......2003-11-26

This is a very unique book. It covers topics
which other books do not. Most other investing
books look at stock picking, technical methods
for market timing, or basic value vs. growth
      strategies.
This book goes beyond these areas and suggests
how and why value vs. growth cycles occur.
It also touches on topics not discussed in
other areas, like the earnings life cycle,
equity duration, and the macroeconomic variables
that influence the stock market. It also
touches on how institutional investors behave
and criticizes, justifiably, some of the
      decisions they make.
I have read about 300 books on the markets,
and this is quite unique. I thought I had
read it all after over almost a decade as a
      full time trader.

5 out of 5 stars An balanced insight into style investment management.......1999-02-19

An insightful read. Perhaps more could have been made of the investment practicalities involved in when to actually make a transition from one style to another. It would also have been nice to have been given further details on style index constuction in order to aid the investment profesional. But overall, a seminal and defining book on style investment.

2 out of 5 stars Laborious. Master of the Obvious. Good for Newbies........2001-11-01

If you're new to the field...then this is for you. But if you're experienced in IR -- as a practicioner or an executive, you'll find nothing new here.

For example, pages on end on why IR is marketing. There's one page on the all-important roadshow presentation; it reads "The organization of the presentation is extremely important." Well, Duh...

Laborious reading, but if you're a newbie and don't want to embarass yourself, lock yourself in a room with this for the weekend.

3 out of 5 stars A good read, but not a good reference guide.......2000-04-27

I was looking for a great reference book that would quickly answer my questions. Unfortunately, this book must be read thoroughly (or at least a chapter at a time). The index could have been much, much more detailed. As it stands, the index is an afterthought, and a very bad one at that. With a better index, this could be a reference book. As it stands, it's still worth the read. I'll still be looking for a better reference guide, though.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST BOOK.......1999-08-16

THIS IS THE BIBLE FOR INVESTOR RELATIONS MANAGERS. YOU CAN FIND ANYTHING YOU WANT TO GET THE MOST OF YOUR FIRM VALUE TO PUBLIC. IT IS THE A-Z GUIDE FOR ALL OF US.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Beginner's Guide to IR.......1999-06-04

A very thorough review of the growing Investor Relations profession. Identifies modern techniques, strategies, resources, and basic SEC disclosure rules used in everything from the pre-IPO to the annual meeting. A great primer for anyone considering a career in Investor Relations.

5 out of 5 stars Masterfully written by Wallace and Marcus.......1998-08-24

I greatly enjoyed reading NDiIR. I feel that Wallace and Marcus clearly know their subject. The book definitely showed the way to run a successful Investor Relations program. I would definitely recommend it to anyone excperienced in Investor Relations or just starting out. Well done Wallace and Marcus!
