Book Description

This book is a calculus-based microeconomic theory text for undergraduates and graduates that successfully balances theoretical/intuitive (verbal), graphical (visual), and mathematical presentation in order to appeal to various learning styles. The text combines theory and applications more completely than most offerings in this course area, and bridges the gap between low-level texts that relegate math to footnotes and upper-level texts that focus only on math at the expense of theory and applications.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars This book is horrible!.......2006-03-26

This text was used in a graduate level microeconomics class I took last semester. We frequently found mistakes in the formulas, mistakes in the odd answers that are provided for problems, mistakes in the text's explanations. Answers to the odd problems often took the long, strange way to arrive at an answer. Or they were incorrect. For example, optimization problems often were solved without partial differentiation, using suspect math.

Some chapters were convoluted and confusingly written--for the second half of the semester the professor frequently started class with an apologetic "I know the chapter on ___ was confusing and hard to follow: these are the key points you should have gotten out of it..."

In addition, some of the theory such as that found in the public goods chapter is really unusual--not consistent with the accepted interpretations of other economists. While the focus on providing a format useful to visual and graphical learners is nice, the verbal half of those explanations was often lacking. And we also found a couple of incorrectly drawn graphs to confuse things further. Walter Nicholson's 9th edition Microeconomic Theory: Basic Principles and Extensions is far superior! I used it constantly when Wetzstein's text left me once again guessing...

As a first edition, I'm sure the book will improve in future editions. But geez, I worked in publishing before I went back to school--and the content of this book was not proofed very well. I was surprised, especially since it is published by Thompson-South Western.

4 out of 5 stars Good Product.......2005-07-08

The book arrived about 2 weeks after I bought it, from the United States to Mexico, so I consider it was a very good service. I recomend to send the books into a harder covering because I noticed that my book was damaged in a certain level because of the transportation within a very weak covering; may be the price would be a little higher but it's worthwhile. The book was in good conditions.

Book Description

Intermediate microeconomics is both fun and intellectually challenging in this new edition, written by the author of The Armchair Economist, the popular trade book that explains basic economics to the general public. The text provides an exceptionally friendly and application-rich presentation, combined with a rigorous and careful development of microeconomic theory. All of the standard topics of intermediate price theory are included, as well as innovative topics such as alternative normative criteria, efficient asset markets, contestable markets, antitrust law, human capital, and the demand for public goods. A unique unifying theme of social welfare is used with little higher-level mathematics.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars CONSERVATIVE BIAS, otherwise great.......2005-10-11

When you write a textbook in economics you have the opportunity, the responsibility even, to apply the theory to public policy and everyday life. Landsburg does this in an informative and entertaining way but overall he treats liberals more roughly than conservatives. There have been times when liberals seemed more ignorant of economics than conservatives but that does not explain why conservatives get off so easily in this book. Landsburg simply prefers examples that fit his political agenda. Sadly, readers will have no idea that the examples were choosen based on their political value as well as their pedagogic value.

Still, this book is entertaining, clearly written and teaches important material. If not for the political bias I would give it five stars.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginners.......2003-07-06

This is one of the best books I have ever read. Anyone who is just beginning with microeconomics, should start with this book. It is very simple and goes right to the point.

5 out of 5 stars Very readable and challenging textbook.......2003-05-13

This is an excellent textbook for any intermediate level price theory or microeconomics course. The author is right when he says beginning students should find it easy to grasp and advanced students will find the material challenging and thought provoking. The portion devoted to a review of elementary topics is small, and I would not recommend this book as an introduction to economics. Any undergraduate who encounters this book should breathe a sigh of relief - it is definitely one of the better texts in the subject. Instructors looking for a good textbook would do well to choose this one.

The "study guide" that is sometimes packaged with the textbook is not entirely useful; the number of problems actually in the textbook should be more than sufficient. Overall, this is a great survey of price theory with Landsburg's signature examples and interesting applications.

5 out of 5 stars I agree! Excellent textbook!.......2000-12-14

I recommend this book for some undergraduate student to take an intermediate microeconomics! Lucid explanation and some pictures are the finest. His another work, Armchair economist,is also nice. Randsburg did many good jobs!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent text.......2000-05-11

I have only read two textbooks in my life that I would recommend to the public in general. This is one. If you have never studied economics, start here. Extremely readable. Note in particular the discussion on whether college should be outlawed (Chapter 9, "Knowledge and Information"), the tragic story of Treasury Bill #GS7-2-179-46-6606-1 (Chapter 17, "Allocating Goods over Time") and the Pigs-in-the-Box problem (Chapter 12, "Game Theory"). Don't succumb to the Nash equilibrium! Read Price Theory.

Book Description

In modern economies a substantial proportion of resources is increasingly allocated to transaction costs. An improvement in the definition of transaction costs to include both the information role and efficiency role requires an integration of the approaches of positive economics and normative economics. In The Economics of Transaction Costs P.K. Rao provides a comprehensive analytical treatment of the subject and suggests a few directions for formal economic models.

1 out of 5 stars Totally useless.......2007-04-27

The title of this book is impressive, and I thought it was a book about transaction cost analysis for financial assets, such as stocks, bonds, options, etc. But no, this is some kind of "general, abstract" (and IMHO useless) treatment of some kind of "general, abstract" concept of transaction cost. In fact, there's no financial application in this book at all.

4 out of 5 stars Full reference text.......2005-12-07

If you are learning economic for the first time this is a great place to start. As I look back on the different books I used to organize these concepts I wish I had used this book. The layout is easy to comprehend using the best of consumer choice and firm topics. The graphs and explanations are great even for someone that has already learned the material. Use this book in combination with a mathematical text like Simon and Blume and you will go far in undertanding Economics. I suggest this book for any advanced student as a place to make sure you really understand the basics of economics. Was a useful reference for graduate level study.

Book Description

Offering the most cutting-edge coverage available, the 10th edition of the market-leading MICROECONOMIC THEORY: BASIC PRINCIPLES AND EXTENSIONS delivers a text that is rigorous yet accessible, accurate in theory yet practical in application, thorough yet concise. Now at a more succinct 19 chapters, this tried-and-true, widely popular text is known as the "bible of microeconomics," offering the most clear and accurate presentation of advanced microeconomic concepts. For the new edition, proven author and economic authority Walter Nicholson is joined by new co-author Chris Snyder, a professor of economics at Dartmouth College. These highly respected economists draw from their wealth of experience in the classroom and the marketplace, giving the book a practical, real-world perspective. Taking a calculus-based approach, MICROECONOMIC THEORY provides an ideal level of mathematical rigor for upper level undergraduate students and beginning graduate students. Extremely reader-friendly, the book is designed to help students truly understand and apply economic models as it enables them to work directly with theoretical tools, real-world applications, and the latest developments in the study of microeconomics. Insightful graphic presentations help visual learners see the connections between the calculus and the algebra/geometry of the same material. In addition, end-of-chapter problems are now presented in two tiers: Simple numerical/mathematical exercises, which build student intuition, are followed by more analytical, theoretical, and complex problems. Unlike other, more theoretical texts, MICROECONOMIC THEORY presents theory in an accessible way as well as illustrates how it applies in the real world.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good intermediate micro.......2007-04-24

This book is very well structured and makes your troubled economist life easier. You definitely need math knowledge but Nicholson explains difficult concepts in a masterful and understandable manner, so the ideas are easier to understand. I would say it is between Varian and Mas Colell. The first part is abundant in relevant examples (it somehow dwindles after) and the questions at the end of the chapters are quite useful.

4 out of 5 stars Very good intermediate book.......2006-12-21

It is very good textbook to learn microeconomics with intuitions and methodology. But, some people are comparing this book with Mas Colell. Nonsense! Mas Colell is a PhD level, pretty technical, "heavy duty" book. This book is an intermediate level book for senior undergrads or master students. On the other hand, Binger&Hofmann's Microeconomics with Calculus book is better then this, in my opinion. It has less story more information. This book spends lots of lines to explain some small points which is boring for someone who should know these stories before starting graduate studies. But it is more comprehensive than baby Varian. Some departments are using Pyndick's book, but I didn't use it. I believe that Binger&Hofmann is the best in this category if you wanna learn Microeconomics using mathematical tools.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty good book........2006-11-10

the shipping was alright.. the book is new and pretty good. happy with it overall..=)

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Overview of Micro Theory.......2006-11-10

After using this book for a math-intensive micro theory course, I would heartily recommend Nicholson's text, which is written clearly with relevant examples and straightforward, useful problems at the end of each chapter. The book is very math-intense and requires a good knowlege of multivariable calculus, but since the reader is probably buying this book for a class, he or she most likely already has the mathematics background necessary. Thumbs up.

3 out of 5 stars Not such an easy read.......2006-10-18

Okay book, not the best read, but better than the Mas-Collel green books. This book gives a lot of info on theory but I thought it lacked wrt practical (applied examples). Used for a graduate level course in Micro Econ. My particular course is very hard (this class serves both graduate and PhD Finance students) so needless to say, I am ordering the workbook to help me survive!

1 out of 5 stars economic "bad" ? .......2005-09-26

The closer I read this book, the less I understand. It is written in a very labrynthine and overly-detailed style, jumping between examples and terminology.

It does a very poor job of giving an overview of the theories. This book over-complicates even the simplest concepts of economics, most likely to be in compliance with the 14% new material rule for textbook editions. It presumes a knowledge of algebra and eventually some calculus, but spends a paragraph explaining the derivation of circumfrence, and how Pi is roughly equivalent to 3.14, in my favorite example of the authors bogging down in petty details.

If you are assigned this book in class, I highly recommend changing to a different class, or hoping that the prof (as is my case) gives clear lectures and uses the book to provide some further depth, but doesn't overly engage in using or testing from it.
