AMAZING!.......2006-12-29
I read this book after getting it for free at a conference that Patrick spoke at, and I have never enjoyed a book like I did this one. It is very helpful in being successful, and I think I learned more from this book after reading it in one day than I learned all semester! Once I opened the book, I couldn't put it down!
This book saved me!.......2006-03-03
This book saved me from making big mistakes in my college decisions. I was majoring in things I hated only because it would mean I would be financially secure when I am truly passionate about art. The author inspires you and gets you going. He gave me the courage to do what I love and make money. That is real success.
This book should be required reading for all high school students so they can make the right choices first without wasting years of frustration about choosing the right major.
MUST READ FOR ALL !!.......2004-08-19
If you have already made it, then pass it on. Fed up at my possibilities at age 50 and fed up with the system I was introduced in my college years, I have spent thousands of dollars in the past couple of years for the information in this book. This is an absolute MUST READ for every person stuck in a dead end rut, as well as the young person thinking about life after high school. All the answers are here for the proper mind set, which is tantamount for harnessing passion for life after high school. This author has it all together in terms of offering proper advice speaking to passion and not academics!! I can't say enough about how refreshing this read is.........Go for all he has to share. So many websites and phone referrals..get your highlighter out. You will have plenty of action to follow up on.......FABULOUS book for the young person and reiteration for the already entrepreneur......GREAT BOOK! It will not disappoint!
A work well done.......2004-04-10
This book is a valuable aid in finding a wonderful job. I believe the author does a great job of providing the reader with the information needed to succeed in today's challenging job market. As a fellow author on the topic, "How to find your dream job and make it a reality: solutions for a rewarding and meaningful career," I think this book is great and would be a wonderful complementing resource.
This book is a must-read for anyone who is serious about finding a new job.
The best of the best self-help books out there!.......2004-02-15
Wow! I don't know where to start about this book. Major in Success is such a power tool to help ANYONE (not only college students!) to look for their dream job. I don't know where else I would be without these helpful tips, practical reasonings, and great feedback from people who ALREADY made it! I would definitely recommend it to anyone who are chasing after their dreams but are too shy too. It made a difference in me and I think it would definitely make a difference in you! Here's the big plus: The author is donating 100% of the profits to charities. Not only are you helping yourself, you are helping the world too!

I used the book and earned a 4.0!.......2001-01-02
I read the book during my senior year in high school and then referred to the book often during my first quarter in college. I followed the suggestions in the book, I organized my day and I found that I had enough time to study and also enough time to enjoy college life. Well, the results are in I earned a 4.0!
Worthwhile Book to Read for College Freshmen.......2000-07-02
Pat O'Brien came to speak to my graduating senior class this year about the reality of college and how to make the best of it. I think it was a good thing to put the end in perspective first and make goals for yourself in order to make your path towards success even more efficient. His Winning Characteristics are not always easy to accomplish, but with discipline and hard work anyone can achieve them. Basic tips on studying, getting to know professors, extracurricular activites, and internships are helpful in envisioning your undergraduate years as challenging, but exciting experiences. Overall, O'Brien offers sufficient and real information that every college freshmen should know, and if he or she utilizes O'Briens advice they will be much more likely to be successful.
COLLEGE THRIVE!.......1999-12-02
This book is about more than just surviving in college, it's about thriving in college. A must have for every student entering college. If you like this book, you'll love "Major in Success," by Patrick Combs. It changed my life.
A must-read for anyone college bound.......1999-07-31
If you are headed for college, this is the pep talk you need! I read it in a single evening, and it got me pumped to do my best in college. It gives you lots of great tips on how to make the most out of college, but it's a quick and enjoyable read! You're investing a great deal of time and money into your college education; its important to get a good return on that investment. Making College Count shows you how. This book has all the good advice of a needed lecture, but it's got a light tone so you want to keep reading! Enjoy!
The College BIBLE.......1999-07-18
Making College Count has to be the most realistic, accurate account of college success available to students today. Not only does one encounter all details of college life, but many aspects of life beyond the books. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to strive for the best in their college years, taking skills to last a life time.
Book Description
Highly topical and controversial examination of the education system.
"Education, education, education" has become an obsession for politicians and the public alike. It is seen as an economic panacea: an engine for growth and prosperity. But is there a link between increased spending on higher education and economic growth? Professor Alison Wolf takes a critical look at successive governments' education policy and challenges many of the tenets of received wisdom: there are no economic reasons for spending more on higher education in order to stimulate growth. The conclusion of this devastating book is that a large proportion of the billions poured into vocational training and university provision might be better spent on teaching the basics at primary school.

Essential reading about higher education.......2006-07-25
The conventional wisdom about higher education goes like this. It is imperative for government to get more and more students into and through college because we are now in a "knowledge economy" and unless we have enough highly skilled workers, we will fall behind. Almost no one in politics or the education establishment ever questions those beliefs. It is widely accepted that increasing the amount of formal education is the means by which states or nations that are relatively poor can lift themselves up economically.
Professor Alison Wolf of King's College in London challenges the conventional wisdom in this extraordinarily insightful book. Actually, it's more than a challenge -- it's a thorough refutation. She demonstrates that the "knowledge economy" does not significantly change the broad contours of the labor force, that a high public "investment" in formal higher education is neither necessary nor sufficient for strong economic growth; and that the best educational policy to follow would be to ensure that young students learn well the academic basics (which many now don't, even if they graduate from college).
Does Education Matter? is absolutely essential reading for anyone with an interest in educational policy.

Book Description
The dominant role played by the state in the financing, regulation, and provision of primary and secondary education reflects the widely-held belief that education is necessary for personal and societal well-being. The economic organization of education depends on political as well as market mechanisms to resolve issues that arise because of contrasting views on such matters as income inequality, social mobility, and diversity. This book provides the theoretical framework necessary for understanding the political economy of education -- the complex relationship of education, economic growth, and income distribution -- and for formulating effective policies to improve the financing and provision of education. The relatively simple models developed illustrate the use of analytical tools for understanding central policy issues.
After offering a historical overview of the development of public education and a review of current econometric evidence on education, growth, and income distribution, the authors lay the theoretical groundwork for the main body of analysis. First they develop a basic static model of how political decisions determine education spending; then they extend this model dynamically. Applying this framework to a comparison of education financing under different regimes, the authors explore fiscal decentralization; individual choice between public and private schooling, including the use of education vouchers to combine public financing of education with private provision; and the social dimension of education -- its role in state-building, the traditional "melting pot" that promotes cohesion in a culturally diverse society.
Book Description
. A 192-page book, Real Essays for College & Grad School shows essays, personal statements, resumes, and letters that are part of the application process for admission and scholarship consideration at colleges and universities. Both the recent high school graduate and the individual applying to professional schools including law, medical, dental, or MBA school will find essays pertinent to their needs. This brilliant and insightful book shows proven techniques that open the door to higher educational opportunities and scholarships. This unique how-to book does not simply tell how to write an effective essays and letters; it shows how in page after page of meaty examples. The extensive Table of Contents is a road map to specific essays broken down by type of degree pursued, specific essay questions, and personal goals. The editor maintains a constant dialogue with the reader in tips and background remarks on each page. As one admissions director says, the essays can count up to 60% in the admissions process. This book shows how to make those essays and personal statements insightful, revealing, and persuasive. The philosophy behind Real Essays for College & Grad School is that both the traditional and non-traditional student applying to any organization of higher education will be judged in part on essays and letters submitted to a selection committee. It is essential that applicants aggressively market their abilities and make the best use of their opportunities to explain their shortcomings, such as a poor high school or undergraduate grade point average, in the most effective manner.
Other titles in the series to be released in the year 2000 are: Real-Resumes for Teachers, Real-Resumes for Students, Real-Resumes for Sales, and Real-Resumes for Career Changers.

How to Put Your Admissions Committee to Sleep.......2004-03-03
This book might be helpful to give you a general idea of what a cover letter or personal statement should be, but the examples given would put Richard Simmons to sleep. Do yourself a favor and take a look at "Graduate Admissions Essays" instead, which also has a lot of great advice about the whole grad school process.
The examples are also very limited in that they also do not encompass fields such as the humanities or fine arts--only social work, education, law, medicine, and a few for college and military school. I wish I could say something better about this book, but for me it was a total disappointment. None of the essays would make anyone stand up and take notice from the first line, and most start with the boring "With the enclosed information" or "College is important to me because..." A very disappointed 2 thumbs down!
Extremely Useful!.......2003-12-20
When I was applying for graduate school, I bought tons of guide books on graduate and college application essays. Among all of them, this one is the most useful one I found--authentic, REAL SUCCESSFUL ESSAYS! A must for those who want to have a clicking effect..

Customer Reviews:
Reaching Your Potential.......2000-06-01
Many people advocate life long learning and the process of reaching your full potential, but generally no one knows how to do that. This book is designed for individuals from middle school to retirement age and provides them with step by step assessments, worksheets and exercises to reach their potential.
This book is broken down in five subject topics, and fifteen chapters to provide an easy systematic approach to personal and professional development. The five subject matters are: Developing Your Potential in Emotional, Intellectual, Physical and Social realms with the fifth unit entitled Developing Your Action Plan.
This book has been wonderful in meeting the needs of four different educational and training areas. First as a personal self help book. Second as a textbook for a college level one-hour class entitled Professional Image Development offered through the Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas. Third as an in-house book for career and personal growth seminars within private industry. And fourth, as a resource book, accessible to all employees, checked out from a Corporate Learning Center library.
The book does not have religious growth. The authors state that religious growth is outside the realm of the book. This makes the book perfect for the diverse workforce and student population.
The book does have a companion guide for instructors: Reaching Your Potential, an Instructor's Guide.
