5 out of 5 stars Very Concise and Clear.......2007-06-25

I am currently still reading this book, and I am planning on getting my certification. The book is written in a very concise, clear and easy to understand manner. Everything is explained with clear examples: every concept explained is easily grasped, and the details fall nicely into place. This is by far the best written manual/study guide I have seen on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Wireless# Certification Official Study Guide.......2006-10-04

This is a good book. The book provides an excellent overview of all of the technologies on the Wireless# exam it also serves as an excellent reference guide. I passed the Wireless# exam using this book and I have frequently returned to this text follow reference material during the course of my work.

5 out of 5 stars Wireless#.......2006-09-22

This is a well written book, it held my interest though the whole book I never had to force myself to read like some tech books. It not only helped me pass my wireless# exam but I believe that it helped me pass my Network+ exam also.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic introduction to Wireless.......2006-08-24

I took the Wireless# exam today and passed after using this excellent book. The book is extremely well written and easy to follow. Even if you already know Wi-Fi pretty well, chances are you might not know a lot about all the other wireless standards out there. As a previous reviewer said, this book gives you a nice broad introduction to all the major wireless technologies currently in use. The information is highly current as the book just came out this year. I recommend taking the exam, as preparing for that will ensure that you have a good grasp of the contents of this book. Even if you are already a CWNA, it's still worth reading this book. Be warned though that the exam expects you to have thorough knowledge of all the standards described in the book including relevant frequencies, ranges, etc. I recommend the practice tests on the CWNP site if you intend to take the exam. In short I highly recommend this book for anyone trying to get a grasp of all things wireless.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT place to start in the wireless field.......2006-08-03

I just passed the Wireless# test today with a really good score. Before taking the test, I read every page of this book. It also has very good questions (with answers explained) at the end of each chapter. If you have a desire to work in the wireless field, but have no real experience yet, the chapters on wireless security, installation, troubleshooting and optimization really give you a head start towards that experience!

Sure you can find a study guide that will just barely give you enough information to pass the test. If you would rather have more information behind the meat, this book is for you. Some of this material was new to me, so I wanted to really know the subjects before taking the test. Besides, this book is the official study guide for the Wireless# test by the CWNP program.

This book (and certification) really is a mile wide and a couple of inches deep. Great place to start in the wireless field. After that, you're really set to start with your CWNA study and test. Now you're getting into a subject that is only a half mile wide, and many more feet deep. CWSP is even smaller but much deeper.

Good luck and have fun!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars very bad english, good material though.......2007-09-24

extremely bad sentence construction, I can not believe that the publisher let go without proof reading.

But there is no other book available to fill the need.

So would be a good book for system design.

Can be a 1000 times better if re-written.

5 out of 5 stars Best system level book I have ever read........2007-03-05

I have to say this is one of the books I have benefied the most from. It shows the auther truely understands the topic both from theoritical and practical aspects.

4 out of 5 stars A good reference on RF System analysis.......2006-04-10

I came across this book after I went through a few books on RF system design. I guess I can confidently say that the book covers the most important aspects of the RF system design such as noise figure, inter-modulation and adjacent channel power ratio calculations. The cascaded system analysis (Noise figure and OIP calculations)are explained in a very straightforward and easy to follow manner. Of particular interest is the section on the architectural trade-off analysis. This section provides a very clear overview of fundamental issues that impact RF system design in most practical environments.

This book has room for improvement though. In particular, the ADC noise figure analysis for the band-pass sampling (appendix 3D) does not cover the ADC non-linearity, the jitter noise and the aliasing due to sub-sampling. Moreover, most of the examples are around the mobile hand-set systems. In my opinion expanding the analysis to the base-station could benefit some readers in this area.
Reader can find himself annoyed by many typo errors in the bibliography section. I am expecting these minor issues to be resolved over the subsequent editions. Overall, I recommend this book for RF system designers who need an up-to-date encyclopedia in this area.

5 out of 5 stars Collection of 100 clever wireless short-cuts.......2007-01-04

This book is about getting the most out of your wireless networking hardware and software. In this book, you will find practical techniques for extending range, increasing throughput, managing wireless resources, and generally making your wireless networking vision a reality. Remember that reality is what you can get away with, and wireless hackers have found that they can get away with quite a lot using surprisingly little. This book will show you some of the best bits of their collected experience. You can browse this book since each hack stands on its own. The following details the table of contents:

Chapter 1, Bluetooth, Mobile Phones, and GPS - The last couple years have brought hundreds of millions of tiny battery-powered wireless devices to market. Some will get you an Internet connection just about anywhere with mobile phone service, while others keep your devices connected to the "last 10 feet," and some cover the whole globe. This chapter demonstrates some uses for these technologies, which will keep your devices and yourself connected, without wires.

Chapter 2, Network Discovery and Monitoring - This chapter will give you the tools you need to detect the presence of wireless networks, coordinate spectrum usage to avoid interference, and visualize network performance. It also covers a number of advanced data-monitoring techniques to pinpoint networking issues and even get an idea of your users' online habits.

Chapter 3, Wireless Security - This chapter explores the current standards for securing wireless networks and suggests several strong methods for protecting yourself and your wireless users from abuse.

Chapter 4, Hardware Hacks - This extensive chapter tells you how to push wireless hardware to the limits, extending range and increasing performance and efficiency. It presents a large collection of components, along with sources and recommendations on how best to use them.

Chapter 5, Software Hacks - There would be no such thing as wireless networks without software, which ranges from the firmware that powers wireless cards and routers to the drivers required for those cards, up to general-purpose operating systems that can be used to build your own wireless access point, router, and firewall. This chapter covers all these topics.

Chapter 6, Do-It-Yourself Antennas - This chapter presents several home-brew designs for wireless networking made by contributors from all over the world. These are practical, tested designs that can significantly extend the range of your wireless network.

Chapter 7, Wireless Network Design - This chapter is a collection of techniques to help simplify the job of building wireless networks that cover the area you require.

Appendix A, Wireless Standards - This appendix will give you a good idea of what problems each wireless technology is designed to solve, their relative strengths and weaknesses, and how to make the best possible use of each to fulfill your communication needs.

Appendix B, Wireless Hardware Guide - This appendix provides a comprehensive list of wireless equipment retailers.

This second edition was published in November 2005, and this edition is almost a complete rewrite of the first edition published in 2003. Thus all lists of hacks prior to November 2005 are invalid for this second edition.

5 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!.......2006-07-20

Are you one of the millions of users who suddenly need nothing more than a laptop and wireless card to get online? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Rob Flickenger and Roger Weeks, have done an outstanding job of writing the 2nd edition of a practical book that gives you the reader, the most out of your wireless networking hardware and software.

Flickenger and Weeks, begin by demonstrating some of the uses for Bluetooth, Mobile Phones and GPS, which will keep your devices connected, without wires. Then, the authors show you the tools you need to detect the presence of wireless networks, coordinate spectrum usage to avoid interference, and visualize network performance. Next, they explore the current standards for securing wireless networks and suggest several strong methods for protecting yourself and your wireless users from abuse.
The authors then show you how to push wireless hardware to the limits, extending range and increasing performance and efficiency. They continue by covering software hacks in detail. Then, the authors present several homebrew designs for wireless networking made by contributors from all over the world. Finally, they present a collection of techniques to help simplify the job of building wireless networks that cover the area you require.

In this most excellent book, you will find practical techniques for extending range , increasing throughput, managing wireless resources, and generally making your wireless networking vision a reality. More importantly, this book brings you the knowledge of experts who apply what they know in the real world every day.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Stuff.......2006-06-27

As others have suggested, it really is not about hacks. Actually its the computer jargon, that keeps varying time to time. There really is a very thin line between hacks and cracks. One suggestion, "The book's title could have been "Wireless tips/hacks for Geeks". Bug again for Geeks, the current title should be fine(endless loop).
This really is a great book, a lot of information consolidated most of the obvious technical part removed and thorow work/research done on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best around.......2006-04-22

Wireless Hacks is one of the best, most succinct books on all things wireless that I have come across. I was expecting the standard "how to set up and secure a wireless access point" fare, and while you do get some of that, you get so much more as well. The authors really do a good job covering everything wireless. From BlueTooth technology, to standard WiFi, to hacking routers, to creating your own antennas, this is a great book for anyone interested in wireless technology.

Like the other "Hacks" books from O'Reilly, this book contains 100 different things you can do to get more out of your wireless devices. The book begins with a good section on BlueTooth technology. If you've got a new cell phone, chances are you have BlueTooth. The authors show you how to do a lot of creative things-from simply connecting your phone to your computer, to showing a slide show of photographs.

The section on 802.11x hacks is so much more than how to secure a network. The authors show you how to detect wireless networks, how to analyze and watch network traffic, and even build your own access point. One of my favorite hacks involves turning a Linksys WRT54G wireless router into a remote control car-all over 802.11b.

In the last section of the book, the authors concentrate on creating effective wireless networks-big or small. Examples are provided for creating a network for a single house, as well as how to create a network for a whole city.

This is a fascinating book, with examples provided for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux platforms. This book is a must have for wireless network enthusiasts.

3 out of 5 stars Beware of inaccuracies even at non-technical levels.......2003-02-19

There are numerous inaccuracies such as page 53 that states that BT range is NOT affected by walls, doors or other solid objects. This is so basic an error and important that one must wonder about anything this book states.

5 out of 5 stars Bluetooth Made Easy.......2002-04-13

Of the books on the market on Bluetooth, this was the first I have found obviously written with the reader in mind. This book is excellent for non-engineers who just want to know a bit more about this technology without earning a radio communications degree at the same time. I recommend this book to any business person with a need to know more about this technology on a mostly non-technical level. If this is what the End to End books are all like, I think I will be a huge fan!

5 out of 5 stars For its purpose, it is a very good book........2004-04-27

I have read some of the other reviews and they seem to complain about the emphasis of this book on the technical details of Bluetooth. It is true that that is the case and for its purpose (i.e. making the Bluetooth specification understandable - some people do want to read about that!!!!) it is a wonderful book.

For anyone who has taken a look at the Bluetooth spec, it is a daunting task to read or understand it and this book breaks it down into easy to understand sizeable chunks. It is written by experts in the field and it consistently makes use of diagrams, pictures and bullet points to explain its concepts which makes reading it enjoyable.

For readers only interested in only one aspect/layer of Bluetooth, the book can act as a good introduction to that aspect and will at the same time demonstrate how that aspect fits into the big picture. The books has a chapter on almost each and every aspect of Bluetooth from technical details to marketting and branding.

I have seen many books on how to develop Bluetooth applications and this is not one of them. That is not its purpose! For its purpose, it is THE BEST book i've seen!

1 out of 5 stars Bad! or best?? textbook to understand or teach Bluetooth.......2003-05-09

In Hands-free profile explanation, there are some drawings from Fig. 20-8 to Fig. 20-12. In these drawings, the pictures of Hands-free device and Audio Gateway are all opposite.
In real Hands-free profile, an Audio Gate-way is a cellular phone and a Hands-free device is a ECU which has audio I/F.
In these, the pictures of the cellular phone are all right side left, mirror image. I think this might be a kind of mistake on making books, but it is a bad joke or an evidence of carelessness of the authors that they could not find these in their proofreading phase.
If there were same kind of mistakes in the other parts, a reader would need to read all related specifications and check them. It might make a reader to be a real expert of Bluetooth, but who want to buy and read this book with referencing the all specification in the same time?

2 out of 5 stars Want to move on .........2002-09-11

This is book is okay for someone wishing to understand the protocols and the building blocks that make up the protocol stack. But its emphasis on the applications is very, very poor.

I personally think that the numerous companies now have invested money in the building blocks and now want to benefit from developing applications, which can be sold to their customers.

This book does not add anything new for me.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2002-08-26

I was very disappointed with this book. It seems very hurried and rushed, where the authors chop and change in the text. There seems to be a lot of discussion for the baseband stuff, but all the application stuff was poor. I wanted a book that told me how to create my Bluetooh applications and this one didn't.

Anyone?

5 out of 5 stars Makes a difficult subject as clear as it can be.......2002-03-08

Bluetooth is a really long spec (1000 pages) and the decentralized, spontaneous nature of the networks that it spawns seem very flexible and robust, but at the same time fairly complicated. I come from a pci background and although I'm sure that there is more complicated stuff out there, I would venture to say that bluetooth is one of the more complicated networking spec's you can attempt to learn. However, if the bluetooth market is going to explode to something like $3bn by 2007, then thousands of engineers will have to understand the spec well enough to be able to design with it.

There are definitely times during this book (I'm 25% through it now) where I really have no idea what these guys are talking about even after re-reading the paragraph several times. More often than not, it's best to just make a note of it in the margin and come back to it later since the text cross-references and repeats itself comfortably often. But there are also lots of moments when I realize that I wouldn't have a clue if I was trying to understand this directly from the spec.

These two authors do a very good job of explaining why things are the way they are. Their writing skills manage to somehow avoid causing confusion and I can understand their state machines and communication diagrams within a few seconds of staring at them. I've found that I can cruise through 30 pages per day comfortably and 60 pages if I put more effort into ignoring the outside world. It's surprisingly easy to motivate myself to pick up the book to start a new chapter because the chapters are laid out such that you are left wondering how the rest of the system fits together. The explanations and acronyms for the most part stick with you as you go through the material. I've found lots of instances where it seems like proof-reading was done with a spell-checker. There are also a couple of numerical mistakes, but nothing that causes confusion.

One tip I've found that helps a lot with going through material like this is to have an application in mind and mentally design for it as you read through the book.

I highly recommend this as a text for understanding bluetooth, but be prepared to digest it over the course of a two-week vacation.

1 out of 5 stars Bluetooth Applications Developer's Guide.......2003-05-21

This book contains an introductory overview of Bluetooth, followed by an assortment Bluetooth topics. It was written by 3 (or 4) different authors and it looks it. It is hardly a well thought out, comprehensive approach to Bluetooth applications development nor is it an applications guide as its title suggests. Prior to reading this book I read "Bluetooth 1.1 Connect Without cables" and many other Bluetooth articles and papers. I was looking for a book that would pull all the information together into a useful concise applications guide. This book does NOT accomplish that.

2 out of 5 stars Too basic for developers.......2002-08-10

As a Bluetooth baseband and applications developer, I found this book too basic to make much use out of. The only thing that I found useful is that they give some performance numbers here and there. My advice to you is to borrow this book for a quick thumb through and throw it away. The other Bluetooth book by Jennifer Bray, Bluetooth connect without cable, is even worse. You might as well read the spec itself, which is more precise and informative.

5 out of 5 stars A comperehensive reference book.......2002-02-08

This book covers Bluetooth application development for a variety of development environments. Many expected technical problems and provisioned and guidelined for right handling are given. The format is handy and the vast usage of FAQs and Solutions' Fast Tracks improves the pactical usage of it. The 1 year upgrade buyer protection plan should ensure that buying the 1st edition isn't too early. Though Bluetooth introduction chapters are provided, the usage of some good Bluetooth description book like Jenifer Bray and Charles Sturman's Bluetooth: Connect without Cables is suggested.

4 out of 5 stars Ideally for Bluetooth Developers.......2002-01-31

The book provides all information about Bluetooth in a Nutshell. Sometimes too many details, but in general a good read with a lot of useful hints.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent all round coverage.......2002-01-08

I especially like the fact that it not only covers Bluetooth, in a level of detail I require, but gives well balanced coverage of the related technoligies. Too many books operate in isolation of their immediate enviroment.

2 out of 5 stars The best Bluetooth book yet, but..........2001-11-06

I thought that this book started well. However, as the book moved on, more and more extraneous side material creeps into each chapter, while at the same time it becomes less and less detail oriented. The result is that more and more topics are introduced but not well explained. I would have greatly preferred if fewer side topics were discussed and more detail was focused on the central issues. I ended up spending the latter 2/3s of the book feeling glazed over. I still feel that this is the best Bluetooth book on the market, but that's because most of the other books are so terrible. No matter what book you buy, you will have to read the Bluetooth spec in its entirety. This book will at least give you a broad overview that the spec is so sorely missing, though that could have been done with far fewer pages.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and practical.......2001-02-13

FACTS: I counted about 1,9M characters in this book, about 1M in "BT demystified" and "BT Revealed". COMMENTS: the authors of this book have practiced BT. They tell you more than just what is in the standard: they explain what is missing or what is not clear in the standard. Chapters about security, qualification and implementation are really precious. They do not expose facts or figures, they explain why and how in simple words. CONCLUSION: We are not yet at the level of a "BT for dummies" because there's no sample application CD, but we are getting closer...

5 out of 5 stars An excellent Bluetooth resource........2001-02-10

Connect Without Cables is the best of the current books for developers and implementers who are making their way through the complexities of the specification for Bluetooth wireless technology. The authors take the us through the multiple levels from RF through real world applications in a consistent and insightful fashion. Additional sections help the reader understand the context of the technology and hint at its exciting potential in the marketplace.

I found this book to be much less of a walk through the specification and more of a view through the eyes of one who has actually implemented Bluetooth and knows where the trouble spots are. The reader is given insights into some of the real thorny issues, and even given suggestions on how to address them.

Although the subject matter is at some times quite dense, the authors do an excellent job, consistently introducing the topics in an overview, and always following with a good summary of the salient points in each section. Readers in the USA should be prepared for an occasional non-American term, phrase, or spelling which may not be listed in the text's extensive and otherwise quite useful glossary, reminding us that Bluetooth wireless technology is truly of global interest and potential impact.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent "foundations" book!.......2007-03-24

This book covers wide variety of topics with such educated and organized fashion that the only thing I can say is: "I wish I had books like that when I was in school! " The book does have a "college" feel to it... Each chapter ends with the list of questions, to help you better understand and learn the subject discussed and do it the with maximum effect.
As authors state, "... if you are looking for techno-babble as designed by propeller heads, there are many other books on the market." and "If you want to learn the basics without having a degree in engineering... you came to right place."
The book is definitely not intended to be read from cover to cover. Personally, I obtained the book for the subjects of VoIP, IP Telephony, DSL and SIP - and I am not disappointed! This is a well written and structured book. Other chapters cover: OSI model, regulation in the industry, modulation and multiplexing, wireless communications, catv, and much more!
I would re-arrange some chapters, but this is my personal opinion which does not take away the value of the book.
All in all, this 600+ pages - 19 chapter treasure has found a well deserved place on my bookshelf!

The Bluetooth specification, which describes a way for electronic devices to communicate with one another at close range by way of radio signals, has great potential. The open standard promises to make mobile telephones, personal organizers, and digital cameras wireless and far easier to use. In Bluetooth Revealed, a couple of experts who helped hammer out the Bluetooth specification (version 1.0B, specifically) take a shot at elaborating upon the contents of the standards documents. They also share some of their imaginings about how Bluetooth connectivity might be put to use. The result of their efforts is a surprisingly readable book that should fit the needs of hardware and software developers who plan to support the Bluetooth platform.

After some discussion of wireless devices and the generalities of the Bluetooth specification, the authors approach their subject in progressively greater detail, defining terms and referring to conceptual diagrams as they go. Emphasizing protocols that are unique to Bluetooth communication (such as RFCOMM, which allows applications to treat a radio link just like a hard-wired serial port), the authors show exactly how Bluetooth devices arrange themselves into wireless networks. Then, they explain how these networked devices exchange commands, files, and multimedia streams. They give fair hearing to the specification's shortcomings, too; noting, for example, that it's good for sharing voice signals among devices, but not so good for sharing high-quality music signals.

The authors of Bluetooth Revealed would be the first to concede that the Bluetooth standard is evolving, and certainly will change as more manufacturers adopt and supplement it. Regardless, this book is a valuable statement of the Bluetooth vision, straight from a couple of its creators. --David Wall

Topics covered: The Bluetooth wireless networking specification (version 1.0B) and its component parts, including the radio, baseband, link-controller, and link-manager layers. Special coverage goes to the Logical Link Control and Adaptation Protocol (L2CAP), the Host Controller Interface (HCI), RFCOMM serial ports, and the Service Discovery Protocol. Bluetooth futures appear here, too.

1 out of 5 stars Re: This book is hard to read!!.......2002-06-19

I received this book recently and tried to
assign some time to read it but already after 2
chapters, I can't continue. It is written
in a manner that is so dull and hard to
sleep. I either put that aside or snooze
off. Please, try to write in a tutorial and interesting
manner than writing it like a data/
standard specification document! Please
accept this input seriously.

3 out of 5 stars It'll put you to sleep.......2001-05-15

This book bombards you with accronyms! You can't get around the fact that the Bluetooth specification is filled with them, but this book doesn't give you a big picture view of what's going on. I'd recommend "Connect Without Cables" instead. Neither book will leave you with an "Ok, I get it" feeling after the first read, but CWC will certainly get your started in the right direction.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly Written Book.......2001-05-05

Book is boring and dry. The book does not educate but a mere and dry presentation of facts taken from Bluetooth specifications. It is a disappointment - the cover looks great but the content is a no.

5 out of 5 stars bluetooth is best.......2001-04-29

it is the better to understand each and every concepts aboutn bluetoooth.

3 out of 5 stars Decent overview, but no code examples.......2001-04-20

Don't expect that you will be writing applications using the Bluetooth's protocol stack right after reading this book. There are no code examples. I was able to write some Bluetooth application but after some intense study of some sample software. I suppose this book is mostly for beginners starting at ground zero who want to get started on understanding how Bluetooth works. I also wished it talked more about the differences between Bluetooth and 802.11 like it did for IrDA

5 out of 5 stars Best book I've seen about Bluetooth.......2005-04-21

Despite that the Bluetooth specs and many Bluetooth devices are available, there is relatively little publicly accessible information regarding the Bluetooth protocol. The specs are too confusing for the average reader and the devices themselves provide no insight into how they do what they do. About the best resource I could find was the PaloWireless website.

Then I come across this book. Of all the Bluetooth books I've attempted to make sense of, this one takes the cake. I have an electrical engineering background, so some of the terminology was already familiar, but even non-engineering types should be able to follow it without much difficulty. Dr. Morrow takes a "bottom-up" approach to Bluetooth, starting from the basics of wireless, including power loss, interference, etc. and builds upon each previous section to give a remarkably complete picture of the how, what, and why's of Bluetooth operation.

He uses practical examples supported by simple, comprehensible figures to get his point across. He also is keenly aware of the underlying complexities with Bluetooth and wireless transmission, yet he manages to carry the reader along a path that reveals the fundamental underpinnings without getting bogged down in the math.

Mix in with that a clear writing style, well-organized chapters, and a hint of "suspense" regarding questions that formed in my mind as a I read. The result: an exceptional book that is both enjoyable to read and intellectually stimulating. For anyone interested in an introduction to wireless technology in general, particularly Bluetooth, this book gets my highest recommendation.
