Case studies in every chapter illustrate the educational needs and accomplishments of students with a variety of disabilities, including autism, mental retardation, severe behavior disorders, and multiple disabilities. Further enhancing the practical utility of the volume are sample assessment notes, reports, and instruction plans; inventories of key skills in different domains; and descriptions of commercially available instructional resources. 3 out of 5 stars A fine textbook..if you can understand clinical case studies.......2004-01-27

I found this book to be of value. As a special education major with an emphasis on children with severe disabiities I found there was a lot of information in this book.
But due to the style of writing contained here, it is more of a reference book than something a student can use to gain quick knowedge of their field.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of this topic.......2001-11-07

This is an excellent book for the beginning information literacy professional. Not only do the authors discuss background and points of view that you should consider when working with faculty on IL programs, but many sample materials are reproduced that you can easily tailor to your situation.

Brief discussions of the types of surveys and programs you can implement are included, as well as ways to promote an IL program with your faculty and students.

Overall, an excellent and practical overview of the topic.

    Book Description

“If you are seeking a more effective way to improve teaching and learning for your students or innovative ways to help teachers become actively involved in their professional career, you will enjoy opening the door to lesson study.”
—From the Foreword by Akihiko Takahashi

Employ one of the most promising strategies for linking professional development and student achievement—lesson study!

Educators have been examining the Japanese lesson study model for years, but the dissimilar environment in U.S. schools has prevented a widescale adoption of this effective form of professional learning.

Lesson Study Communities demonstrates how to translate each step of the Japanese lesson study process to the educational environment of U.S. schools. Offering specific strategies that have been tested and successfully used with ethnically diverse students, this book incorporates a culturally responsive approach to curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Working in impoverished schools with ELL and low SES students, Wiburg and Brown’s program made significant progress toward closing the achievement gap in poorly served communities.

Applicable to math, science, reading, language arts, and social studies programs, this implementation guide:

Addressing the challenge of changing student demographics, this book includes guidance on assessing readiness for lesson study, planning the research lesson, gathering data, modifying the lesson, and sharing findings.

Staff developers, teachers, and administrators committed to increasing student achievement will find this to be a significant stride toward ensuring academic success.

              Product Description

Planning in the lives of people with developmental disabilities has moved beyond the "do this, do that" model of the past. A person now has the option of dreaming about and working towards a life of stimulation, fulfillment, variety, individuation and satisfaction. But, without a focused plan that serves the needs and wishes of the person and not the system, service providers fail to help people with disabilities to exercise those options.
