Faster Than the Speed of Change: How to Transform Your Business into a High Performance, High-Profit, High- Satisfaction Enterprise: Secrets from a Leading Executive Coach & futurist
Paul Lemberg Manufacturer: Akiba Press (CA) ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0970112130 |
Book Description
An important new book for entrepreneurs who are serious about attaining world class results...Every day I'm approached by entrepreneurs and executives who want to get more from their businesses. Of course they want to increase sales, profits and cash flow. They'd also like to be stronger leaders and better managers. They even want to take time off for themselves, once in a while.
The sad truth is that some people go through their whole working lives without mastering these critical business elements. Others go to great lengths to discover the secrets and learn how to do it for themselves. The payoff when they do? Cash, impact, and above all satisfaction.
This book can take years off your learning curve. The ideas and action steps it contains are distilled from over seven years coaching hundreds of executivesin seventeen industries with sales ranging from one million to hundreds of millions of dollars.
You'll learn the simple yet powerful master secrets of entrepreneurial leaders. Every one of the eighty-four chapters contains detailed, how-to, common-sense strategies, methods, and techniques including:
How to unleash the spirit that puts your people in overdrive;
Getting people to do exactly what you want for their own reasons;
Discovering your highest value contribution and focusing exclusively on that;
Developing your personal leadership abilities, and how to generate those same abilities in your team;
The magic of having bigger problems, and how they produce bigger payoffs;
Finding the very best leaders in your organization and making them even better; Zeroing in on your strengths and zeroing out your weaknesses;
Playing games for peak performance;
The secret to creating unstoppable motivation--every single day;
Using breakdowns to create breakthroughs;
Turning your business into a no-problem zone;
Raising unreasonable expectations to produce unreasonable outcomes;
Changing how you think about change; and,
How to have more than enough time to do all the important things and only the important things.
If you applied just one of these 84 simple secrets, it would quickly improve your business and add cash to your bottom line. But imagine if you took the time to master two, three, or more. What if you piled secret on top of secret on top of secretthe impact on your business could well be incalculable. And while many of these ideas are different than what you've done until now, none of them are difficult.
However, I feel it is only fair to warn you...
This book is not for everybody. While the chapters are short - most are one or two pages, and none is more than five - to get the most out of it you will have to do some work. There are checklists to follow, questionnaires to fill in, and some of the chapters even contain exercises for the reader. So if you are looking to be spoon-fed some tired, old business pablum which isn't going to make a difference anyway, you probably don't want to get this book--since it will just end up gathering dust on your bookshelf.
On the other hand, I don't think you can find a publication of any kind that will be more intriguing, informative, and profoundly profitableif you are willing to make it work for you. I don't care how successful you are right nowthis book will help you massively grow your business.
By the way, this book only contains solutions. It does not have any war stories, mini-biographies or tales of corporate derring-do. I didn't think you had any time to waste, so I left them out.

84 short lessons on business leadership.......2002-02-25
Solid, high-octane advice.......2001-09-08
That said, Mr. Lemberg has many, many wonderful thoughts, theories, concepts and exercises. I believe wholeheartedly that most individuals can benefit from this book. Regardless whether one uses Mr. Lemberg's advice to the letter or molds a concept to fit a current issue, this book presents new ideas and solutions to old and ever-present problems.
Solid Questions and Assignments to Improve Your Focus.......2001-07-07
The book has two weaknesses. First, it treats almost all of the changes needed in order to make an enterprise more successful as ones related to attitude. Most businesses need more guidance for dealing with the actual business environment challenges they face if they are to make breakthroughs. Second, the title is misleading. This book will speed you up, but will not necessarily cause you to move faster than the changes you are dealing with in the external environment.
Review: Mr. Lemberg explains that this book is intended to be "a practical handbook, a detailed how-to book . . . ." You need to practice these many changes in order to be successful, and the book is designed to coach "you through the practice." As a result, a "strong purpose and clear intentions" should emerge.
Mr. Lemberg guarantees his book. If after reading and applying it you are not getting accelerated results, you can write to him and he will refund the price of the book. So the risk is all on his end!
The book contains 84 points with explanations. These are built around the concepts of Fast . . . Preparation, Thinking, Spirit, Talking, Direction, and Action. One of the book's strengths is that it helps you diagnose how well focused you are now, and where you need more attention before beginning to reshape your thinking. Faster Than the Speed of Change causes you to think about how to remove mental barriers, then establish your hierarchy of values, communicate more effectively with others, keep your focus, track your progress, and taking massive consistent action. The points are usually illustrated from fictional characters, such as the scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz.
The content of these points nicely match up with the source material in books like Think and Grow Rich, The Power of Positive Thinking, and Awaken the Giant Within. There are also some references to mainline business thinkers.
If you also need help with establishing a business strategy, you might want to read this book in conjunction with a book that focuses squarely on that subject such as Leading the Revolution.
While this book will probably help you speed your progress, I'm not sure that it will cause you to move faster than the changes in the external environment. In fact, if you don't expand the range of ideas that you are working on, the book may speed your implementation of the wrong ideas in many cases. As long as you quickly recover from when that bias to action leads you astray, that will not be fatal. But you will have lost ground over someone who is leading the innovation in your industry by having a better fix on what needs to be done.
After you have read this book and done the exercises in it, I suggest that you also take the time to think through your personal and spiritual life in the same dimensions. Otherwise, your focus on your career purposes will tend to crowd out your other reasons for being.
Capture more of the potential from life . . . in all of its dimensions!
A Breakthrough Book about Breakthrough Success.......2001-01-03
Breakthroughs
To be faster than the speed of change, you must develop breakthroughs in ALL aspects of your business. The author states you need to overhaul your:
- THINKING - about vision, beliefs and problem solving
- SPIRIT - by which he means values and purpose
- TALKING - to make declarations and commitments, and to pursue actions
- DIRECTING - which involves strategy, leverage, excellence and balance
- ACTIONS - emphasizing accountability and measurement
Lists
You do this primarily through lists. If you have a problem, you make a list of possible actions to take to remedy the situation. If you want to think creatively, make a list of possibilities. Thus, he asks you, as reader, to make lists about your:
- BELIEFS - which have a big impact on what you do
- VALUES - together with rules defining them, and practices to live by these values
- CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTORS
- IMPORTANT ACTIONS, etc.
After you make a list, prioritize it. The top priority item should be first and the lowest priority item should be last - or perhaps removed from the list. Hard thinking is required here.
Question Answering
In certain areas, the author guides the reader with a series of questions to be answered. He uses this approach for thinking about tough subjects, such as:
- Vision
- Purpose
- Problem Solving
YOUR Book
There is very little exposition in this book. Most chapters are 1 or 2 pages long. You can read the whole book in one sitting. But this will do you no good. It is not a book for reading, but a catalyst for acting. If you are not ready to apply yourself by making the lists and answering the questions, don't pick up the book.
But if you mean business, follow what the author suggests, create the lists and answer the questions. The result will be a thorough re-thinking and re-energizing of your business. It will then become possible to innovate faster than the speed of change.
Unlike conventional books, this book is not for reading, but for doing. And if you do it, you will essentially be writing YOUR book about YOUR business.
Faster than the Speed of Change is an excellent, unusual book. Buy it only if you are serious about achieving runaway success and are prepared to spend months to write YOUR company book.
A book for the "Just Do It" crowd.......2000-10-26
If you're looking for a book on business theory, don't look here. This book is about getting things done. It's about breakthrough thinking and methods for enhancing your ability to work faster, think clearer, and accomplish more.
This book is essential reading for anyone thinking about or in the process of starting an enterprise. It's also for anyone looking to create change in their life. Faster Than the Speed of Change is filled with activities (do them!--don't just read them) that really effect change.
If you want to make things happen, read this book and use it as your guide to growth and breakthrough change.

Bullseye! : Hitting Your Strategic Targets Through High-Impact Measurement
William A. Schiemann , and John H. Lingle Manufacturer: Free Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 068485452X |
Amazon.com
According to consultants William A. Schiemann and John H. Lingle, companies that truly "manage by measurement" are outperforming those that don't by an average three-year return on investment of 80 percent versus 45 percent. In Bullseye! Hitting Your Strategic Targets Through High-Impact Measurement, they detail a comprehensive four-phase program for anyone who would like to advance corporate goals by similarly overhauling the way information is gathered, shared, and managed within the organization. Their sweeping system helps leaders accurately and consistently track the performance of a half-dozen key components--customers-competitors, financial stakeholders, employees-subcontractors, technologies, partners-suppliers, and overall communities--and then share resultant data across the board. While business measurement has traditionally been "a monitoring device primarily used to 'take the temperature' of the organization and help supervisors know where to focus their attention," Schiemann and Lingle's approach utilizes it instead to link ideas and behaviors, integrate performance companywide, and increase self-accountability. After demonstrating how corresponding efforts have paid off in Fortune 100 firms such as Procter & Gamble, General Electric, and Sears, they examine deterrents to implementation and explain the process. Recommended for senior executives, managers, and production teams seeking new ways to bolster their bottom lines. --Howard RothmanBook Description
At last, in this book, the great paradox of measurement is resolved. According to the authors' original -- and revealing -- research companies that manage by measurement outperform less disciplined competitors by an average three-year return on investment of 80 percent versus an average ROI of 45 percent. Yet few companies have put in place a disciplined approach for measuring the key nonfinancial, strategic performance areas that are so crucial to a firm's success.
Bullseye! treats measurement as a key senior-management business issue. The authors explore the role of measurement in adding clarity and specificity to an organization's strategy, and in driving efforts to translate strategy into operational initiatives and business results.
Organizational change and measurement experts William Schiemann and John Lingle have written the first book to provide a complete detailed blueprint for implementing a strategic measurement system. To resolve the measurement paradox, they have created as the centerpiece of Bullseye! a detailed case study that describes a four-phase process that will successfully transform any company into a measurement-managed organization. The four phases of this process are: defining a strategic business model, designing measures to support the model cascading the model and measures throughout the organization, and embedding the measures into the leadership processes of the organization.
In eminently readable prose, the authors confront head-on the powerful forces that conspire to prevent a company from gaining the full value from its measurement system. In the process, Schiemann and Lingle have developed an integrative framework that covers all the major measurement areas: markets and customers, finance, people, operations, the environment, and suppliers. In fact, the authors go Beyond other published accounts of measurement systems by providing strategic tools to manage customer, community, environmental, and regulatory stakeholders along with suppliers, and adaptability -- the level at which a company learns and innovates. Focus and speed, they argue, are the essential competitive qualities. Following the guidelines recommended in this book, executives with responsibility for setting and implementing strategy should be able to make significant improvements in three months and major changes within a year. Bullseye! is must reading for all general managers at the corporate, division, and business-unit levels.

The High Performance Enterprise: Reinventing the People Side of Your Business
Donna R. Neusch , and Alan F. Siebenaler Manufacturer: Wiley ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0471132837 |
Book Description
"This book is written for the manager who wants to make their company more flexible, more competitive, more successful, and a more satisfying place to workâwhat we call the High Performance Enterprise. It explains how this kind of enterprise can be created through two interrelated processes: one strategic and one people-oriented. . . . [U]ntil now, no books have simultaneously provided (1) a process for creating the High Performance Enterprise, and (2) a process for linking the people side of the company to the business strategy. Our goal is to do both, and to provide a model for tying both processes together. Whether you're skimming this book for a few good ideas or seeking a complete battle plan, we hope that you will find in these chapters the tools you need to change your company into a High Performance Enterprise." âfrom the IntroductionIn today's fast-paced, rapidly growing business environment, survival truly does depend on being the fittest. For companies, this means performing at the highest level possible to be more flexible, more competitive, and ultimately, more successful than the rest of the field. Attainingâand maintainingâpeak performance may be easier said than done, however, as bold initiatives once thought to be the answer have fallen short of expectations and yielded less than stellar results. What, then, is the solution? In The High Performance Enterpriseânow completely revised and expandedâmanagement consultant Donna Neusch and operations manager Alan Siebenaler shed some much-needed light on the ongoing dilemma of improving performance and sustaining long-term standards of excellence.
For the past several years, companies have strived to change the way work is performed and business is conducted, trying everything from TQM, teams, and Kaizen to QFD, right-sizing, and activity-based costing. Yet, despite these various techniques, results have been less than managers have hoped. Why the shortcomings? In most cases, the reason has been that people systems, including work design, compensation systems, and team structures, have either been ignored, ineffective, or counterproductiveâcostly mistakes that need to be corrected if a company is to succeed.
The High Performance Enterprise, Second Edition emphasizes the crucial role of people systems in the overall performance improvement program, examines its relationship with another important componentâstrategic directionâand shows you how to tie them together seamlessly to achieve optimal results. With complete details on both subprocesses, you'll learn about key concepts that are integral to strategic direction, such as mission, values, and vision, as well as the basics needed to turn this direction into action.
To help you strengthen and reinvent the people side of your business, you'll find a proven 10-step process that incorporates managing performance and compensation, defining flexibility and teams, developing staffing strategies for future skills, and planning for implementation, among other fundamentals.
Packed with helpful case studies, numerous real-world examples, and practical applications from the field, The High Performance Enterprise, Second Edition offers new solutions for age-old problems: how best to improve performance and increase return on compensation dollars. Essential reading for all managers.
