5 out of 5 stars Effective reminder ... Efficient reference.......2007-01-07

I recommend this text to financial professionals I teach ... VERY helpful to clear the cobwebs several years after college!

3 out of 5 stars Good Study Material but Some Sloppy Errors.......2005-03-11

I read this book to supplement my CFA curriculum studies. Compared to other Schaum's books, Financial Management by Shim and Siegel merits a rating of between 3 and 3 1/2.

Four chapters covering topics of Risk Return & Valuation, Capital Budgeting, Capital Budgeting Under Risk, and Cost of Capital were excellent. Other chapters were also well written. The problem sets solidified concepts and were a pleasure to work through.

The authors present the material in a straight forward and easy to understand manner. They provide numerous examples of how to apply the concepts which are truly beneficial.

My main complaint is that there are dozens of errors throughout the book, which indicate sloppy proofreading. This can potentially frustrate readers new to the field of financial management. Calculation errors (!), misapplication of formulas (Do vs. D1) and mislabeling of charts (time lines / cash flows) were particularly frustrating and can be confusing.

I welcome the authors to contact me if they plan to release an updated edition (this book copyrighted 1998). I'll be glad to share with them the errors (at least I think they are!) I found.

It would also have been nice if the authors utilized financial calculators for some of the TVM (time value of money) applications and indicated the keystrokes. A break-out box showing the steps on a Texas Instrument BA-II or HP12-C (two popular financial calculators) would be helpful.

In sum, Financial Management is a very readable book. It is comprehensive, practical, and provides a good depth of discussion without getting too theoretical. Just watch out for the silly mistakes.

5 out of 5 stars great resource.......2004-11-03

I don't know what that reader below is saying.?? This book was very helpful to me when I used this for a finance class. It's great because it has quizzes/exams, definitions, key terms, a useful index, many many sample problems, and formulas in bold. When you are a busy person and are using this as a refresher, or in conjunction w/ a textbook, it's very helpful to have this paperback workbook to go through for a quick reference.

I've referred to it many times while reading through my textbook, doing homework problems, or studying for a test.

Love the schaum's series - this one in particular has been very useful to me.

5 out of 5 stars Financial Management y Schaum's.......2003-07-21

This work is a good supplement to the class text. It has hundreds
of solved problems depicted. In addition, the Schaum's covers
international financial management problems which are not always
found in the standard texts. This is a good practice
workbook to reinforce the current text and class notes.
Complex cash flow problems, present value and return on investment problems are shown with accompanying diagrams to aid
in the visual presentation. This text is excellent in order to
prepare for formal licensing exams and other comprehensive
tests .

just open the first sample page. you see that the author does not even understand what profit maximization, as defined by economists, is. i would be careful if i were you.

Book Description

Many industry analysts believe that grid computing will be the next big technology wave. It is so promising that major technology companies such as IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, and Sun are allocating significant resources for grid research and development. Grid Computing for Developers explores the evolution of grid computing from the early distributed computing paradigm to the modern grid environments. Most of today's grid environments will be examined including OGSA, Resource Managers, and MPI. The book also explores today's de-facto standards for grid computing including a comprehensive guide to the Globus Toolkit for developers covering installation, system administration, development guides for grid services, open grid services architectures for OGSI and OGSA-DAI, commodity grid kits for Java, Perl, and OGSA-C, and performance evaluation tests. A significant amount of source code samples accompany each chapter. Grid Computing for Developers is an ideal resource for computer scientists and researchers, graduate students, and IT professionals looking to further expand their grid computing skills.

5 out of 5 stars For the next generation of IT developers.......2006-03-16

Vladimir Silva's GRID COMPUTING FOR DEVELOPERS tells of a promising new technology, exploring the evolution of Grid computing from early distributed computing ideas to its modern environment. From de facto standards for Grid computing to development guides for Grid services, commodity Grid kits for Java and Perl, and source code samples, A DEVELOPER'S GUIDE TO GRID COMPUTING is perfet for computer scientists who want a head start on the next generation of IT Grid computing.

5 out of 5 stars Good Overview and Enough to Get Started.......2006-03-03

Grid computing promises to be the next big wave in high performance computing. While the power of today's PC's has gotten relatively huge, easily passing the supercomputers of not so long ago, there are still certain applications in weather, nuclear physics, bioinformatics and other areas where far more computing power is needed.

The first step was to take a bunch of PC's and cluster them together to make a more powerful system. When these large massively parallel systems were built, it then became clear that taking several of these from around the country or even the world could produce 'systems' of considerably more power.

The answer was 'The Grid.' Funded by the US Government, work began several years ago to produce the basic tools needed to make Grid computing work. This book clearly explains, in a practical sense, what Grid computing has become today. It gives some background and description of grid computing. Then it goes into the software that has been written that enables the practical use of such systems.

The book is comprehensive enough that it could be used by students or administrators that are working with or even just considering using a grid architecture.

5 out of 5 stars Good comprehensive development guide for GT 3 & 4.......2006-01-04

This book covers a lot of stuff! From installation transcripts for GT 2,3,4, scheduler installation, customization to Grid portal development. The book has little theory but I found some interesting numbers on the potential growth of the grid computing market over the next few years. It has a lot of source code and plenty of images to support it thus it is targeted to software engineers and developers involved on grid computing.

There is some complex math (related to large integer factorization) which is hard to understand for the novice but overall I give it five stars. All major protocols used by the globus toolkit are explained: resource allocation, data management, and security.

P.S: There is also a few chapters dedicated to the Message Passing Interface (MPI) with examples and some integration tips with the Globus Resource Allocation Manager (GRAM) which I found unique.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of good grid stuff.......2005-12-11

This book is preety darn good. I covers a broad range of grid topics such as: grid middleware, resource managers, schedulers, parallel computing with MPI, etc.
I specially liked the chapter on grid enabled portal development. It has helped me a lot at work. There is also a comprehensive guide to the Globus toolkit (GT3, GT4, WSRF) that is full of samples, transcripts and troubleshooting tips.

Overall, I think this book is a great tool for the grid engineer and developer.

Cheers.

      5 out of 5 stars Must read in the era of a global world.......2006-12-09

      The 21st century has witnessed the shrinking of the world into one global village. Today, businesses and financial markets are irrevocably interlinked. The internet has spawned a remarkable revolution which enables people from around the world to communicate for free with one another through email and online messengers.

      As national boundaries become less important, people from all over the world have to interact with each other. Cultural clashes can be inevitable unless people learn to understand how other cultures think and behave.

      Thomas Zweifel's book is a must read for today's global managers, diplomats, students, world travellers - infact just about anyone who wants to be a part of the globalized free world.

      4 out of 5 stars Public Schools and the Curture Clash.......2006-01-30

      I have just finished reading Thomas Zweifel's book on culture clash and high performance. Each and everyday curtural clashes take place in public schools,and this very good leadership book should be used by public school administrators to assist them in dealing with their diverse student bodies. I especially like the lab sections because they were built on thinking and questions and not a simple listing of the commonplace activities. Walk down any public school hallway and you will see a great deal of diversity and it was refreshing to see a book that contained ideas school administrators could use to help these students in their daily ives.

      5 out of 5 stars International work or interest?..read this book!.......2005-12-19

      You cannot truly talk about multinational business issues much less work in a international professional space without understanding the cultures in question and the many pitfalls associated with "diving right in" with possible good intentions but little cultural knowledge. This small yet information heavy book is essential in understanding and navigating Culture Clash.

      5 out of 5 stars Culture Clash .......2005-12-07

      This book is a must read. For anyone in business looking to climb the corporate ladder this book offers very valuable insight. The author shares his broad and fascinating experiences working with different cultures. I couldn't put this book down. It was a real eye opener.

      5 out of 5 stars Very helpful book!.......2005-11-28

      What is particularly great about this book is that it has so many telling examples, which allows the reader to compare them with his or her own culture.
      Reading this book has made me think a lot about the characteristics of the Danish culture (my culture). The qoute on the Germans "But how do we do this? I can't see that this can be done" - that is so Danish!
      Such insight is very helpful, because knowing intellectually that your own culture is "a set of rituals and norms" as all other cultures is one thing, but actually being able to see the specific characteristics of your own culture is so much more!

      Book Description

      An important new book for entrepreneurs who are serious about attaining world class results...

      Every day I'm approached by entrepreneurs and executives who want to get more from their businesses. Of course they want to increase sales, profits and cash flow. They'd also like to be stronger leaders and better managers. They even want to take time off for themselves, once in a while.

      The sad truth is that some people go through their whole working lives without mastering these critical business elements. Others go to great lengths to discover the secrets and learn how to do it for themselves. The payoff when they do? Cash, impact, and above all — satisfaction.

      This book can take years off your learning curve. The ideas and action steps it contains are distilled from over seven years coaching hundreds of executives—in seventeen industries with sales ranging from one million to hundreds of millions of dollars.

      You'll learn the simple yet powerful master secrets of entrepreneurial leaders. Every one of the eighty-four chapters contains detailed, how-to, common-sense strategies, methods, and techniques including:

      How to unleash the spirit that puts your people in overdrive;

      Getting people to do exactly what you want for their own reasons;

      Discovering your highest value contribution and focusing exclusively on that;

      Developing your personal leadership abilities, and how to generate those same abilities in your team;

      The magic of having bigger problems, and how they produce bigger payoffs;

      Finding the very best leaders in your organization and making them even better; Zeroing in on your strengths and zeroing out your weaknesses;

      Playing games for peak performance;

      The secret to creating unstoppable motivation--every single day;

      Using breakdowns to create breakthroughs;

      Turning your business into a no-problem zone;

      Raising unreasonable expectations to produce unreasonable outcomes;

      Changing how you think about change; and,

      How to have more than enough time to do all the important things and only the important things.

      If you applied just one of these 84 simple secrets, it would quickly improve your business and add cash to your bottom line. But imagine if you took the time to master two, three, or more. What if you piled secret on top of secret on top of secret—the impact on your business could well be incalculable. And while many of these ideas are different than what you've done until now, none of them are difficult.

      However, I feel it is only fair to warn you...

      This book is not for everybody. While the chapters are short - most are one or two pages, and none is more than five - to get the most out of it you will have to do some work. There are checklists to follow, questionnaires to fill in, and some of the chapters even contain exercises for the reader. So if you are looking to be spoon-fed some tired, old business pablum which isn't going to make a difference anyway, you probably don't want to get this book--since it will just end up gathering dust on your bookshelf.

      On the other hand, I don't think you can find a publication of any kind that will be more intriguing, informative, and profoundly profitable—if you are willing to make it work for you. I don't care how successful you are right now—this book will help you massively grow your business.

      By the way, this book only contains solutions. It does not have any war stories, mini-biographies or tales of corporate derring-do. I didn't think you had any time to waste, so I left them out.

      4 out of 5 stars 84 short lessons on business leadership.......2002-02-25

      84 short lessons which can be read independently. Each lesson is mainly a short advice, including some common sense. It will not make you a MBA, but it certainly gives you series of inspiring ideas and thoughts. Some live examples would have lifted this book to the top. Forget about moving cheese. Buy it, read it, act it.

      4 out of 5 stars Solid, high-octane advice.......2001-09-08

      This value of this book is its succinct nature and spin on thought. The majority of the advice presented by Mr. Lemberg is valuable and viable. However, Mr. Lemberg indicates that these changes will move one through the journey "faster" than the changes one faces. In my opinion, this is placing the cart before the horse. Understanding the processes of traveling the path is the lesson within the journey. If one has walked the path but not learned its lessons, one will surely fail when faced with the potentially daunting issues that lie in everyday life and business. Consequently, Mr. Lemberg has put his theories AHEAD of the lessons. This is not the logical path, thus 4 stars instead of 5.

      That said, Mr. Lemberg has many, many wonderful thoughts, theories, concepts and exercises. I believe wholeheartedly that most individuals can benefit from this book. Regardless whether one uses Mr. Lemberg's advice to the letter or molds a concept to fit a current issue, this book presents new ideas and solutions to old and ever-present problems.

      4 out of 5 stars Solid Questions and Assignments to Improve Your Focus.......2001-07-07

      Review Summary: All of the material in this book is valuable, and for many people the workbook assignments here will represent the first time these issues have been formally addressed. As a result, most people will find themselves paying more attention to higher payoff areas and overcoming procrastination.

      The book has two weaknesses. First, it treats almost all of the changes needed in order to make an enterprise more successful as ones related to attitude. Most businesses need more guidance for dealing with the actual business environment challenges they face if they are to make breakthroughs. Second, the title is misleading. This book will speed you up, but will not necessarily cause you to move faster than the changes you are dealing with in the external environment.

      Review: Mr. Lemberg explains that this book is intended to be "a practical handbook, a detailed how-to book . . . ." You need to practice these many changes in order to be successful, and the book is designed to coach "you through the practice." As a result, a "strong purpose and clear intentions" should emerge.

      Mr. Lemberg guarantees his book. If after reading and applying it you are not getting accelerated results, you can write to him and he will refund the price of the book. So the risk is all on his end!

      The book contains 84 points with explanations. These are built around the concepts of Fast . . . Preparation, Thinking, Spirit, Talking, Direction, and Action. One of the book's strengths is that it helps you diagnose how well focused you are now, and where you need more attention before beginning to reshape your thinking. Faster Than the Speed of Change causes you to think about how to remove mental barriers, then establish your hierarchy of values, communicate more effectively with others, keep your focus, track your progress, and taking massive consistent action. The points are usually illustrated from fictional characters, such as the scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz.

      The content of these points nicely match up with the source material in books like Think and Grow Rich, The Power of Positive Thinking, and Awaken the Giant Within. There are also some references to mainline business thinkers.

      If you also need help with establishing a business strategy, you might want to read this book in conjunction with a book that focuses squarely on that subject such as Leading the Revolution.

      While this book will probably help you speed your progress, I'm not sure that it will cause you to move faster than the changes in the external environment. In fact, if you don't expand the range of ideas that you are working on, the book may speed your implementation of the wrong ideas in many cases. As long as you quickly recover from when that bias to action leads you astray, that will not be fatal. But you will have lost ground over someone who is leading the innovation in your industry by having a better fix on what needs to be done.

      After you have read this book and done the exercises in it, I suggest that you also take the time to think through your personal and spiritual life in the same dimensions. Otherwise, your focus on your career purposes will tend to crowd out your other reasons for being.

      Capture more of the potential from life . . . in all of its dimensions!

      5 out of 5 stars A Breakthrough Book about Breakthrough Success.......2001-01-03

      Do you want to make your business a runaway success? Do you want to achieve breakthroughs that place your company in front of the pack? Do you want to achieve outsize goals? Then this is the book for you. It discusses breakthroughs and defines lists and questions to guide your thinking about your business.

      Breakthroughs

      To be faster than the speed of change, you must develop breakthroughs in ALL aspects of your business. The author states you need to overhaul your:

      - THINKING - about vision, beliefs and problem solving

      - SPIRIT - by which he means values and purpose

      - TALKING - to make declarations and commitments, and to pursue actions

      - DIRECTING - which involves strategy, leverage, excellence and balance

      - ACTIONS - emphasizing accountability and measurement

      Lists

      You do this primarily through lists. If you have a problem, you make a list of possible actions to take to remedy the situation. If you want to think creatively, make a list of possibilities. Thus, he asks you, as reader, to make lists about your:

      - BELIEFS - which have a big impact on what you do

      - VALUES - together with rules defining them, and practices to live by these values

      - CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTORS

      - IMPORTANT ACTIONS, etc.

      After you make a list, prioritize it. The top priority item should be first and the lowest priority item should be last - or perhaps removed from the list. Hard thinking is required here.

      Question Answering

      In certain areas, the author guides the reader with a series of questions to be answered. He uses this approach for thinking about tough subjects, such as:

      - Vision

      - Purpose

      - Problem Solving

      YOUR Book

      There is very little exposition in this book. Most chapters are 1 or 2 pages long. You can read the whole book in one sitting. But this will do you no good. It is not a book for reading, but a catalyst for acting. If you are not ready to apply yourself by making the lists and answering the questions, don't pick up the book.

      But if you mean business, follow what the author suggests, create the lists and answer the questions. The result will be a thorough re-thinking and re-energizing of your business. It will then become possible to innovate faster than the speed of change.

      Unlike conventional books, this book is not for reading, but for doing. And if you do it, you will essentially be writing YOUR book about YOUR business.

      Faster than the Speed of Change is an excellent, unusual book. Buy it only if you are serious about achieving runaway success and are prepared to spend months to write YOUR company book.

      You’ll walk through developing frameworks for building AJAX applications that combine data tables, Web forms, charts, search, and filtering: the very systems businesses depend on in CRM, ERP, BI, and beyond. Then, building on this strong foundation, the authors identify proven AJAX architectural patterns, and present case studies drawn from actual .NET and Java AJAX applications. Coverge includes

      •Using AJAX to implement Model-View-Controller (MVC) in the browser

      •Encapsulating user interface functionality to facilitate code reuse and reduce cross-browser development problems

      •Overcoming the unique security challenges associated with AJAX Web applications

      •Optimizing AJAX usability: the “back” button, caching, bookmarking, offline usage, and beyond

      From security to scalability to project risk, this is the only book to cover all the issues facing AJAX developers in the enterprise. Whether you’re migrating legacy HTML interfaces or building new applications from scratch, you’ll find it absolutely indispensable.

      According to consultants William A. Schiemann and John H. Lingle, companies that truly "manage by measurement" are outperforming those that don't by an average three-year return on investment of 80 percent versus 45 percent. In Bullseye! Hitting Your Strategic Targets Through High-Impact Measurement, they detail a comprehensive four-phase program for anyone who would like to advance corporate goals by similarly overhauling the way information is gathered, shared, and managed within the organization. Their sweeping system helps leaders accurately and consistently track the performance of a half-dozen key components--customers-competitors, financial stakeholders, employees-subcontractors, technologies, partners-suppliers, and overall communities--and then share resultant data across the board. While business measurement has traditionally been "a monitoring device primarily used to 'take the temperature' of the organization and help supervisors know where to focus their attention," Schiemann and Lingle's approach utilizes it instead to link ideas and behaviors, integrate performance companywide, and increase self-accountability. After demonstrating how corresponding efforts have paid off in Fortune 100 firms such as Procter & Gamble, General Electric, and Sears, they examine deterrents to implementation and explain the process. Recommended for senior executives, managers, and production teams seeking new ways to bolster their bottom lines. --Howard Rothman

      Book Description

      At last, in this book, the great paradox of measurement is resolved. According to the authors' original -- and revealing -- research companies that manage by measurement outperform less disciplined competitors by an average three-year return on investment of 80 percent versus an average ROI of 45 percent. Yet few companies have put in place a disciplined approach for measuring the key nonfinancial, strategic performance areas that are so crucial to a firm's success.

      Bullseye! treats measurement as a key senior-management business issue. The authors explore the role of measurement in adding clarity and specificity to an organization's strategy, and in driving efforts to translate strategy into operational initiatives and business results.

      Organizational change and measurement experts William Schiemann and John Lingle have written the first book to provide a complete detailed blueprint for implementing a strategic measurement system. To resolve the measurement paradox, they have created as the centerpiece of Bullseye! a detailed case study that describes a four-phase process that will successfully transform any company into a measurement-managed organization. The four phases of this process are: defining a strategic business model, designing measures to support the model cascading the model and measures throughout the organization, and embedding the measures into the leadership processes of the organization.

      In eminently readable prose, the authors confront head-on the powerful forces that conspire to prevent a company from gaining the full value from its measurement system. In the process, Schiemann and Lingle have developed an integrative framework that covers all the major measurement areas: markets and customers, finance, people, operations, the environment, and suppliers. In fact, the authors go Beyond other published accounts of measurement systems by providing strategic tools to manage customer, community, environmental, and regulatory stakeholders along with suppliers, and adaptability -- the level at which a company learns and innovates. Focus and speed, they argue, are the essential competitive qualities. Following the guidelines recommended in this book, executives with responsibility for setting and implementing strategy should be able to make significant improvements in three months and major changes within a year. Bullseye! is must reading for all general managers at the corporate, division, and business-unit levels.

      I've been consulting for 30+ years and find the concepts in this book refreshing. In fact, the problem with most scorecards is that they miss the linkages that Dr. Schiemann and Dr. Lingle address in this book: People, Culture and Discipline.

      I especially like the detailed evalution of important linkages to make measurements work. These authors write clearly and succinctly with real case studies, not theory.

      Use this book as a reference guide of what to do when Norton and Kaplan fails.

      Another try at using Kaplan & Norton's great two masterpiece books. If you love to buy every book in the field get this book. Otherwise, do not waste your money because there are newer and more updated books. The Balanced Scorecard is already in its third generation, using Systems Modeling with I THINK or POWERSIM, and this book is already past its glory.

      5 out of 5 stars Maps the Way to Human Capital Improvement.......2001-02-27

      Knowledge-worker productivity is the biggest of the 21st century management challenges. Companies can do a great deal to improve it. This book exemplifies a key element: the measurement of non financial drivers of financial success. The 'Initiatives Grid' (Table 8-1) provides guidelines how to review strategic performance measures with the board of directors or parent organization. The process of cascading the measures throughout the organization and embedding the measures into the leadership process is key. The text gives a clear view of the bricks that put together a balanced set of performance indicators, that any organization could use to focus executive teams and human resources on a unified strategy. Companies may benefit from strict use of this system, readers will gain much from applying the insights without complete implementation.

        Book Description

        "This book is written for the manager who wants to make their company more flexible, more competitive, more successful, and a more satisfying place to work—what we call the High Performance Enterprise. It explains how this kind of enterprise can be created through two interrelated processes: one strategic and one people-oriented. . . . [U]ntil now, no books have simultaneously provided (1) a process for creating the High Performance Enterprise, and (2) a process for linking the people side of the company to the business strategy. Our goal is to do both, and to provide a model for tying both processes together. Whether you're skimming this book for a few good ideas or seeking a complete battle plan, we hope that you will find in these chapters the tools you need to change your company into a High Performance Enterprise." —from the Introduction

        In today's fast-paced, rapidly growing business environment, survival truly does depend on being the fittest. For companies, this means performing at the highest level possible to be more flexible, more competitive, and ultimately, more successful than the rest of the field. Attaining—and maintaining—peak performance may be easier said than done, however, as bold initiatives once thought to be the answer have fallen short of expectations and yielded less than stellar results. What, then, is the solution? In The High Performance Enterprise—now completely revised and expanded—management consultant Donna Neusch and operations manager Alan Siebenaler shed some much-needed light on the ongoing dilemma of improving performance and sustaining long-term standards of excellence.

        For the past several years, companies have strived to change the way work is performed and business is conducted, trying everything from TQM, teams, and Kaizen to QFD, right-sizing, and activity-based costing. Yet, despite these various techniques, results have been less than managers have hoped. Why the shortcomings? In most cases, the reason has been that people systems, including work design, compensation systems, and team structures, have either been ignored, ineffective, or counterproductive—costly mistakes that need to be corrected if a company is to succeed.

        The High Performance Enterprise, Second Edition emphasizes the crucial role of people systems in the overall performance improvement program, examines its relationship with another important component—strategic direction—and shows you how to tie them together seamlessly to achieve optimal results. With complete details on both subprocesses, you'll learn about key concepts that are integral to strategic direction, such as mission, values, and vision, as well as the basics needed to turn this direction into action.

        To help you strengthen and reinvent the people side of your business, you'll find a proven 10-step process that incorporates managing performance and compensation, defining flexibility and teams, developing staffing strategies for future skills, and planning for implementation, among other fundamentals.

        Packed with helpful case studies, numerous real-world examples, and practical applications from the field, The High Performance Enterprise, Second Edition offers new solutions for age-old problems: how best to improve performance and increase return on compensation dollars. Essential reading for all managers.
